Could a person in a scooter do this tour?

I would not recommend it. The roads and sidewalks would not be conducive for a person who needs a scooter. You may want to consider some of the bus or carriage tours.

Mary was an amazing tour guide, went out of her way to learn names and where everyone was visiting from (impressive!), and genuinely shared her passion and knowledge for her hometown. She seemed to enjoy giving the tour as much as those paying for it, and took her time to engage with everyone throughout the 2+ hours. Highly recommend this tour service!

Mary Helen is AMAZING. We booked a Two Sisters Tour of the historic district of Charleston. We all met on a blazing hot day in June. The tour started by meeting in a park and Mary Helen was quickly was able to remember everyone's name (very impressive). Mary Helen is a native of Charleston and loves having everyone in town visiting. It was cool to get the have the tour led by a native, because we got a perspective of how things had changed over the years form someone who had experienced the change. We zig-zagged around the historical district of Charleston and learned about the Churches, Government buildings and the amazing houses (with even more amazing planter boxes!!). There were great details about buildings and churches and "architecturally unique" things in the historical district of Charleston. I would definitely recommend this walking tour if you are in the area and want to learn something.

We've been coming to Charleston for 25+ years and are a family of history buffs. We've been on many tours of Charleston and this was the ideal balance of social history and local insight presented with energy, humor and intelligence. This was no memorized spiel but, rather, a story of religion, architecture, history, race and sense of place. Bravo, Two Sisters

Outstanding! I'm not usually a "tour guy" but I'm glad my wife arranged for it. This was our 3rd visit to the city but we had just poked around on our own the first two times. The tour really added a lot to our knowledge of this beautiful historical city. Mary Helen was great, knew all of our names as well as just about everyone we encountered over the course of 2 1/2 hours. There was even a little singing and dancing. Everyone on tour was very nice and many had very insightful questions about what we had seen. We ended in the afternoon, just in time for happy hour!

This was my wife and I's first time in Charleston. What better way to "see" the town than a walking tour. But which one, there are so many. Spoke to friends and neighbors (We live in Myrtle Beach so only a medium drive) and all recommended Two Sisters. The 5 star listing in Yelp just sealed the deal. Anyway we toured with Mary Helen this past Monday morning and it was fantastic. It was so much fun and we learned a lot. It was fast paced and we covered a lot of ground so be prepared. They gave us a bottle of water half way through which was a nice touch. We will be going back with the kids and grandchildren and will be doing this agian. Cannot wait :-)

I couldn't have imagined my first trip to Charleston without Mary Helen's brilliant introduction to the rich history and culture of this great city! Mary Helen is certainly a one of a kind tour guide. Trained as a lawyer, she brings together the most interesting facts of war, slave trade, piracy, Southern society and the hard work of the people to revive Charleston from devastation after the Civil War. Thanks for making each one of us on the tour smarter than we were yesterday and for your warm hospitality!

Photo of Kurt K.

The sisters are brilliant retired lawyers and sixth generation Charleston residents. Mary Helen knew every name in the first five minutes of the tour. She told us right off the bat, "I walk fast, I talk fast. You get two hours of tours in two." She knows everyone, everyone. You'll hear her say hello to many folks on the tour. Including Lori, or another of the sweet grass weavers she knows. Excellent tour. Go.

Great tour Mary Helen presented a wonderful tour chock full of information & good ol' southern hospitality . Ms. Mary grew up in Charleston and provides a unique personal perspective.

This was by far the best walking tour I've ever taken. We were in Charleston last week, and had Therese for our guide. She was funny, engaging, energetic, and very informative! The two hours flew by, and I was sad when it was over! Since she has lived in Charleston her whole life, she also threw in some food and shopping recommendations while giving a lot of historical context to the city. Finally, Therese took two seconds to memorize everyone's name, where they were from, and other facts about them. She would then use those tidbits to tell stories you could relate to. I would definitely book the Two Sisters when you visit Charleston!

Outstanding tour of the Charleston's streets and alleyways. Such a lot of interesting detail and a variety of things to look at. Friendly, informative and well worth the money!

Such an excellent tour! Filled with detailed and fascinating information and presented in a friendly and warm manner. Highly recommended!

We did the walking tour with Theresa, and she’s full of spirit, knowledge, and love for the city she grew up in. We learned SO much and highly recommend 2Sisters Tours. What a great start we had to our first time visit to a new favorite city. The sights, the food, the people!

Great tour!!!!! Very exciting, entertaining and knowledgeable. Loved it . We already told somone about the tour. Pat

We loved our tour! Mary Helen was our guide. She was sensational. She was extremely knowledgeable and super charming. My family adored her!! We have been going to Charleston for years and we learned so many new things from her. If you get the opportunity to take this tour, sign up now!!

Many photo ops for historic sites and buildings! Wear comfy shoes. Whether you’re a history buff or not, you’ll learn something! We had a great time! Mary Helen learned the group’s names and home states, which made it feel that much more personal. I would definitely recommend this walking tour!! Cash and Venmo was accepted as payment. We learned about Charleston’s history, some about the Civil War, saw where George Washington worshipped with his family, how homes are being restored today. We walked down the old streets from the 1700’s! It was a great tour!

A great, real tour!

There are all kinds of tours of Charleston with an angle -- pirates, ghosts, etc. But if you want a real history of how the city grew from its founding to the present day, the Two Sisters Tour is a great choice. The sisters (both lawyers with deep family roots in Charleston) each lead two small-group 2-hour walking tours daily around central Charleston. I had the tour with Mary Helen Danzler and she was fun and smart and knew the city and its history and architecture. It was my second time visiting Charleston and I learned a lot more, and had more fun, with this tour than my first trip. Highly recommend it!

Mary Helen was a wonderful tour guide... I felt like we were family. She made it a point to remember our names and where we were from making us feel at home. Knowledgeable with some extra special historical points (bricks with fingerprints on them for example) The tour was interesting and full of history. We absolutely loved every minute.

These ladies really know their beloved city. They are generous with their thoughtful answers to questions. You will learn a lot on this tour and the hours willl fly by!

Mary Helen Dantzler was such an incredible tour guide. She knows her city well and was very generous with her time and knowledge. I learned so much about Charleston and its history. It was fun watching Mary Helen interact with locals along the tour. I highly recommend this tour!

We have been on tours with guides all over the world, and the two hours we spent with Teresa yesterday was among the very best. She was smart and articulate and informed and kept us moving the whole time. We would absolutely recommend this to anyone on a visit to Charleston. It would be smart to do it early in your stay because you will get a lot of advice from her about restaurants and other sites to see for the remainder of your time.

We had the most interesting walking tour of beautiful Charleston with Therese Smythe who gave us such insight into the history of Charleston. Therese was so entertaining and we highly recommend booking with the Two Sisters walking tour. Thank you Therese for a truly memorable experience

TWO SISTERS HISTORIC WALKING TOURS: All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (with Photos)

Two Sisters Tours

Frequently asked questions.

Our walking tour is an overview of Charleston’s history, culture, architecture, gardens and much more. We cover about 18 city blocks through the most historic part of our city. The tour spans 350 years from our Colonial era to our modern day preservation efforts and the recent restoration that led to our being the most historically preserved city in America. If there are topics that you want more detail about, please let us know!

Our group tours cost $25 per person and might have as many as 20 people on them.  Private tours are seasonally priced and may be arranged for a smaller group. Reservations for all tours are always required.

There is a public parking garage close to the starting point at 85 Queen Street and another garage just beyond it in the next block. Street parking is not advised.

We gladly accept families with young children in strollers and visitors in wheelchairs or scooters, although we caution our guests that Charleston’s sidewalks are notoriously old and uneven. A few spots along the tour route are difficult to access but we always seem to manage!

Our tour times are listed on our Book a Tour Page . Each tour lasts a little over 2 hours and covers about 2.5 miles. We begin in Washington Park next to City Hall at 80 Broad Street, and usually end at the Dock Street Theater at the corner of Church and Queen Streets. There is a map on the Book a Tour page.

We’re very sorry, but dogs are not allowed on our tours unless they are registered service dogs.

Our tours run rain and shine, except in the event of severe weather. Please plan accordingly!  Summer tours can be very hot, so please bring water with you.

Please refer to our recommendations page for a full list of things to do in Charleston .
