Patagonia Ventura

About our store.

This is where it all began. Great Pacific Iron Works was Patagonia’s very first store. We opened our doors in 1972 in the old Hobson meat packing plant a short drive to some of California’s best surf and within shouting distance of Patagonia founder/owner Yvon Chouinard’s Tin Shed blacksmith shop. It’s a beautifully remodeled building from the ‘20s that carries a robust assortment of quality Patagonia outdoor clothing and gear for the whole family. You’ll also find a steady schedule of community events, close proximity to FCD surf shop, and a friendly, knowledgeable staff.

More about working with us, why should i work with you as my travel agent.

Working with a professional travel advisor will not only streamline your trip and save you time, but will also provide benefits you would not be able to obtain on your own. Working with an experienced and well connected travel advisor will also help make your trip much more unforgettable as a result of the value we bring.

Are you a call center?

Does TravelStore offer emergency support during the vacation?

We have an After Hours service to handle emergencies and changes. Do you charge separate fees for your services?

The Local's Travel Guide to Ventura, California

Brandon and I were both born and raised in Ventura, California - a surf town just North of Los Angeles. Despite it's oceanside location, wedged between Santa Barbara and Malibu, Ventura has always been a lot sleepier, a lot less fancy, and lot more affordable than the rest of of Coastal California - and even though I haven't lived here since I was 17, it is home.

While for so long we've been known for the Ventura County Fair, a couple of mentions in Beach Boys songs, and that one level in Tony Hawk 2 , non-locals coming up to Ventura for a less-expensive beach weekend, or actually moving into town has grown so much in the last few years. If you're driving up or down the California coast, take a day to stop here instead of just driving on through to Malibu - you won't regret it!

Scroll down for our real local's guide to this underrated gem of a city.

Born on the beach - literally!

2020 Covid Updates:

As coronavirus lockdowns eased and local restaurants and businesses looked for a way to open up safely, the city of Ventura closed off a number of blocks of downtown Main St to traffic, and created space for everyone to walk, expand outdoor dining and shopping, and enjoy what makes this city special in a safe and open environment. Since the weather in Ventura is warm and mild all year long, there is no end date in site - and the new Main Street is so lovely, I hope the change stays permanent!

Eat Tacos:

In my years living in New York, the one thing I would always be most excited to come home to was our amazing Mexican food. There is nothing that says California more to me than eating authentic tacos or burritos on the beach, and Ventura has some of the best of the best. There's no better place to start this guide than with one of the very best aspects of Ventura - the Mexican food.

  • Corrales - Corrales is more than a restaurant here, it's a way of life. There are two locations within a half mile of each other, and it is a constant argument among locals which one is the best one. (For the records, the Corrales closer to Seaward is the good one!) I would actually suggest not getting tacos here - the burritos are what this spot is really known for. Go for the chicken chile verde 4-way (meat, beans, cheese, and rice) and add jalapeños for one of my absolute favorite meals on the planet. In the mornings, they have amazing breakfast burritos as well - but note that they are closed on Sundays.
  • Lalo's - Located along the Ventura Avenue, an area non-locals usually don't go, Lalo's is one of the best and most authentic Mexican restaurants in town. There's no indoor seating, and a hole-in-the-wall feel. The burritos here are huge, and amazing. I usually go for the chile relleno!
  • Taqueria Cuernavaca - This little mom and pop shop along Ventura Avenue is as authentic as it gets, and serves everything from sopes to gorditas, and of course tacos. Not to mention, they have one of the best salsa bars in town.
  • Johnny's Mexican -  Jonny's has stood in this spot for more than 50 years - and has been my dad's favorite for almost 40! The flour tortilla chips here are incredible, and so is their chimichanga.
  • Beach House Tacos - Less authentic taco truck and a little more Upscale California, this taco restaurant located on Ventura Pier is a newer favorite, with lots of delicious combos. On weekends they have Mimosa specials!
  • Spencer Mackenzie's Fish - Spencer's opened up in town only about 10 years ago, but very quickly became a Ventura icon - and their Giant Fish Tacos have consistently been voted some of the best in the country. Come Monday - Thursday afternoons for their 2 for 1 taco happy hour.

travel store ventura

Sunny days at Lalo's

A few of our favorite non-taco related places for brunch, lunch, and dinner - all independently operated and locals approved!

  • Nature's Grill - This popular Main Street spot has been a local staple for 20 years, and never disappoints. The simple cafe has great salads, sandwiches, smoothies, and a ton of vegetarian and vegan options. I have been getting the Chicken Caeser Salad here since High School, and Brandon loves their Turkey Burger!
  • Busy Bee Cafe - Just a couple of blocks down Main St, Busy Bee was my favorite restaurant to come to as a kid, and is just a good today. This 1950's Americana Diner is known for their burgers and milkshakes, as well as their iconic red vinyl booths - that each come with an individual jukebox. 25 cents gets you two plays from their oldies selection. (I would always pick Rockin Robin!)
  • Tony's Pizza - It's not all tacos and Mexican food in Ventura - Tony's Pizza has been in town forever, and is perfectly located just a couple blocks from downtown, and a couple blocks from the beach. They are a family-owned restaurant famous for their delicious pizza, where they make their dough and sauce from scratch daily. The outdoor space has lawn games, picnic tables, and a huge fire pit.
  • Urbane Cafe - This popular lunch spot has some of the best sandwiches and salads in town.
  • Cafe Nouveau - One of Ventura's most popular weekend brunch spots, this charming restaurant located in a Spanish bungalow in a cute residential neighborhood never disappoints.
  • Ventiki Tiki Bar - Ventura's first and only Tiki Bar, Ventiki is always a good time. In addition to dangerously strong tiki drinks, their Polynesian appetizer menu is original and delicious.
  • The Jolly Oyster - Open Saturdays and Sundays (11:00 - 7:00) in Ventura State Park, this food truck has some of the best oysters (raw and cooked) and muscles I have had anywhere, and makes for a great, fresh, beach-side lunch.
  • Pete's Breakfast House - A classic all-American breakfast spot that locals just love. It gets super busy on weekends, but is great every day!
  • Marshall's Bodacious BBQ - This unassuming stand has some of the best BBQ chicken or pork sandwiches you can find anywhere.
  • McConnell's Ice Cream - Originally founded in nearby Santa Barbara, McConnell's opened a Ventura location a few years ago and has a great mix of heavenly ice cream flavors and low-calorie frozen yogurts.

Eat Fancy:

Fancy is a relative term in our little beach town, but for a nicer meal, these are our absolute favorites, and are all places we return to over and over again.

  • Rumf ish y Vino - A new, upscale place in town with gorgeous decor, a large outdoor patio with heaters, and amazing food and cocktails. We had our engagement party here! Don't miss the happy hour deals, and fresh ceviches!
  • Lure Fish House - The first real date Brandon and I ever went on was here, and we have been back many times since. Lure has a great happy house and so many tasty seafood-focused dishes. We love their black cod, charbroiled oysters, and fresh ceviche. Everything served here is fresh and comes from sustainable sources.
  • Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill -  The best BBQ in town, Brandon spent a few years waiting tables and bartending here during college, and we still go back every year on his birthday. Definitely try the Tri-Tip, a local favorite! We always get the marinated tri-tip salad and a rack of the babyback ribs. The garlic rolls here are both heavenly and dangerous - dip them in the BBQ sauce!

Specialties at Rumfish Y Vino

The Best Coffee:

In a smaller town, skip the Starbucks and start your day at one of these instead.

  • Palm and Boy - Formally known as 'Stoked", Palm and Boy is a great place to start the day off if you're headed to the beach. This ultra cute spot on Main Street has delicious coffee, avocado toasts and acai bowls, and are located a short walk away from the beach.
  • Kay's Coffee - It's a coffee and tea lover's paradise at Kay's Coffee . All their baked goods and pastries taste fresh and homemade like they've just been pulled out of the oven using natural ingredients. Grab a seat on the patio outside and soak in some sun while you enjoy your coffee.
  • Prospect Coffee Roasters - Another local cafe who knows their coffee. From delicious matcha lattes to creamy cappuccino, everything is prepared to perfection - and the shop here is cozy enough to spend a few hours on a laptop if needed.
  • Singing Sun Coffee - Ventura's newest neighborhood coffee shop has a very instagrammable decor, a walkable downtown location, and of course, incredible craft coffee!

travel store ventura

Sunny days at Prospect Coffee

Local Breweries:

In the past few years, Ventura has opened a ton of local breweries and taphouses, something that has quickly fit right in to the Ventura Surf, Yoga & Beer culture.

  • Topa Topa - is one of our favorite places to go when we're looking for great beer and a great atmosphere. They have 16 rotating hand-crafted beers on tap. It's a great place to bring a group of friends and hang out - this is also the best place to bring a non-drinking friend, as they have craft sodas and cold brew coffee in addition to beer. Topa Topa now has a second location on the East Side of Ventura, as well as locations in nearby Ojai and Santa Barbara
  • MadeWest - is another must stop on your trip to Ventura, MadeWest is the original Ventura brewery. In the industrial side of town, they have a huge open space, outdoor patio, and variety of games - and usually at least one food truck in the parking lot. Madewest also recently took over the iconic restaurant space on the Ventura Pier and opened a second location!
  • Leashless Brewing - If you're environmentally conscious or gluten-free look no further than this local brewery. They are a certified organic brewery mindful of sustainability issues. All the ingredients come from organic farmers, and their specialty is crafting gluten and gluten-reduced Belgian styles and IPAs.
  • Fluid State - Round out your beer tour on Fluid State's outdoor patio with tacos or a slice of pizza. Fluid State is very dog friendly and has a large outdoor beer garden!

Things To Do:

Way more to do than just downtown shopping and the beach!

  • Go Ice Blocking - Ice Blocking is one of those things that was very normal to us growing up, and it wasn't until after we became adults and moved elsewhere that we realized it is an activity very local to Ventura - and not something that everyone does in the summer like we had assumed. Ice Blocking is our simple, California version of sledding:  you need to get a 12" block of ice from Conway Ice , and then you push it up the hills at Arroyo Verde Park , then jump on and ride it down! There is no way to really enjoy Ventura like a local than an afternoon of ice blocking.
  • Catch a Wave - More than anything else, Ventura is a surf town. Head down to the local beaches for our famous breaks - or if you're not experienced, sign up for a class from Ventura Surf Lessons or Ventura Makos Surf School .
  • Golf N' Stuff  - A Ventura Icon, this Mini Golf and more destination has been in town for decades. The mini golf course has been well maintained, but is full of kitschy charm, and beyond that the park has go-karts, bumper boats, bumper cars, lazer tag, and a full arcade!
  • Rent a boat at the harbor - Ventura boat rentals has everything from kayaking to pedal boats, and electric boats. They also offer private cocktail cruises in the evening for a romantic date night out.
  • Ventura County Fair - This fair has been taking place every summer since 1875, and comes every year for the first two weeks of August. From the standard carnival rides and games, there are also nightly concerts, exhibits, and classic pieces of Americana - pie baking competitions, cattle auctions, miniature pig racing, and weekend fireworks. 2020 saw the first year in over a century without the annual Ventura County Fair - but there are full plans for the fair to return in 2021!
  • Ride a bike along the Boardwalk - The Boardwalk and bike path near The Ventura Pier runs for miles and is a great place to run, bike, or just take a walk - and has unobstructed views of the sun setting over the water. Check out Wheel Fun Rentals for bike rentals!
  • Wine Tasting - Not far from Central California's wine country, Ventura offers many options for wine-tasting. Check out Plan B Cellars , Old Creek Ranch Winery , or Four Brix Winery to get started!

travel store ventura

There is no more local experience than Ice Blocking at Arroyo Verde Park

Beaches Guide:

  • Most underrated beach: Harbor Beach - located at the far end of  Ventura, across from Ventura Harbor , this is the largest and sandiest beach in the city. On weekend days it is much less populated than the downtown beaches.
  • Best Surfing Beach: Surfer's Point - one of California’s top surfing spots, surfer's point is legendary.
  • Best Destination Beach:   Bates Beach/Rincon - just a 15 minute drive North from Ventura, Bates Beach has always been my favorite. Great for a full beach day of sun and enjoying the surf.
  • Ventura Pier & Boardwalk - The sandy beach at the pier is one of Ventura's biggest attractions, and one of the icons of the town. On a clear day, the view from the beach and the pier looks out towards the Channel Islands.
  • Marina Park - This is a great spot to watch boats cruise out of the harbor or sunbathe in the green area. Make it a day trip by packing a picnic - you'll find picnic tables and barbecue areas as well as a volleyball court.

travel store ventura

Surfers Point at Sunset

Where to Shop:

The best in new and established boutiques and independent shop.

  • Tiki Girl - My favorite local boutique! Tiki Girl has been a Ventura staple for years and is a great one stop shop for swimwear, boho-chic outfits, and home goods, located right on the Main St Downtown strip. Independently owned and operated by a Ventura Local, this is my favorite place to stop when I'm in town.
  • Passport Habit - Global home decor with a local touch, this is the place to go for all your home design needs. The local owners are world travelers that choose all of their products directly from the source - everything from vintage Moroccan rugs to hand-tooled leather travel accessories to vintage maps.
  • Iron and Resin - This motorcycle and surf focused boutique sells the best gear, clothing, and accessories for both men and women.
  • Findings Market - Findings market is a pop-up experience that supports and features local creatives. The market highlights a carefully curated collection of emerging artisans and inspiring brands from Ventura County and the surrounding areas.
  • Copperfields Ventura - Copperfields Gifts & Rarities is a long-established shop with a collection of odditites, vintage finds, and unique gifts.
  • Folke Home - an independent furniture and home boutique focusing on mid-century modern and Scandinavian pieces with a California twist.
  • The Refill Shoppe - An environmentally-conscious downtown shop where you can purchase and refill reusable bottles of bath, body, home, and cleaning products.
  • Shop Kariella - a downtown boutique located in the cutest little alley (see photo below) focusing on boho an beachy women's wear.
  • Timbre Books - A brand new independent bookshop and literary community space opening soon! In a year of so much downtown, seeing and supporting new independent businesses has become more of a passion of mine, and I am so proud to see these kinds of businesses opening in my own hometown, even now in 2020!
  • The Thrift Store Circuit - Growing up, Ventura was mostly known for its collection of large thrift stores downtown. While the downtown streets are also filled with boutiques now, almost all of the thrift stores still remain in their original spots, and are still just as fun to dig through while treasure hunting.

travel store ventura

Where to stay:

Ventura's hotel options are still somewhat limited, but I'm sure will not be for long! Here are some of our best options.

  • Waypoint Ventura - Recently opened, and by far Ventura's cutest accommodation. If you're looking for a truly unique experience, check out Waypoint. All the rooms at this joint are restored vintage travel trailers or or Airstreams filled with linens, bath amenities, air conditioning, TV, and everything else you would find in a hotel. The best part: guests have access to a communal fire pit where there's nightly s'mores.
  • Bella Maggiore Inn - This inn is a B&B with a thrilling history - It is rumored to be haunted by a ghost named Sylvia. But don't worry the old inn has now been restored to a quaint bed and breakfast. They're located just a half-block to downtown Ventura and 3 blocks to the beach.
  • Cliffhouse Inn - The swimming pool here has the best views of the ocean. Located between Ventura and Carpenteria, the area is a little isolated so be ready to get in your car to drive to nearby attractions.

26 Best Things To Do In Ventura California (By a Local)

Ventura is the perfect Central California coastal destination for those wanting to spend a few days relaxing near the beach, enjoy fun outdoor activities like surfing and hiking and indulge in fresh, drool-worthy seafood. And we should know! As locals living in Ventura County for the past several years, we have discovered so many incredible things to do in Ventura California .

Whether you’re heading on a weekend trip to Ventura from out of town, just moved here, or planning a pit stop on a road trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco , our Ventura guide is here to help!

In this post, I’ll cover some of my favorite things to do in Ventura for a fun coastal trip.

We have personally been to all of these locations and this is where we take our family and friends whenever they come to visit.

Best Things To Do In Ventura California:

1. san buenaventura state beach.

San-Buenaventura-Beach-Trail-in-Ventura

Spending a couple of hours at the San Buenaventura State Beach is one of the top things to do in Ventura for both locals and out-of-town visitors alike. This pristine beach is a great spot for sports such as surfing, swimming, volleyball or just laying out on the sandy shoreline.

San Buenaventura State Beach is also the beginning of the Ventura Beach Bike Trail that you can take down to the Ventura Pier and past it. Along the way, you can enjoy views of scenic sand dunes, fresh air, and unique futuristic-looking restrooms (yep, you read that right!) .

For day visitors there are plenty of picnic tables where you can enjoy a lunch with a view. If you don’t want to bring your own food, I highly recommend stopping by The Jolly Oyster Ventura seafood truck that’s situated within San Buenaventura State Beach.

The-Jolly-Oyster-Ventura-best-places-to-eat-in-Ventura-CA

We usually order the grilled oysters along with fried oyster tacos. For something a bit more unique try the Uni Ceviche Tostada that comes with Santa Barbara Sea Urchin.

Do note that dogs are allowed along the bike path and within The Jolly Oyster Ventura food truck area but not on the beach itself.

Location: San Buenaventura State Beach

2. Marina Park

One of the first places that I visited after moving to Ventura was Marina Park. This is one of the most popular Ventura attractions so you’ll see it popping up on Google Maps as one of the best things to do in the area.

Marina Park is situated right next to the ocean and consists of 15 acres of walking paths and a grassy area where you can enjoy a beachfront picnic. It’s a great place to come for families with kids or if you’re looking for somewhere to take your dog for a walk.

Marina Park has a beachfront playground and a large ship in the sand where kids can go to play in. The park is situated right next to the ocean and Ventura Harbor if you want to dip your toes into the water.

Location: Marina Park

3. Ventura Harbor Village

travel store ventura

Ventura Harbor Village is one of the top places to go in Ventura, especially for out-of-town visitors. Ventura Harbor Village is an outdoor shopping area situated in the perfect location between the ocean and Ventura Marina.

Here you can walk along the harbor and check out local shops, seafood restaurants, cafes, and dessert spots. A few of the most popular seafood restaurants include Brophy Bros. , Andria’s Seafood , and Baja Bay Surf n Taco .

If you have a sweet tooth, be sure to stop by Coastal Cone & Parlor for a cone of soft-serve ice cream! They offer lots of flavors including some more interesting choices such as Fishzookies and Mermaid Yaki Fish Cone.

From Ventura Harbor, you can also go on a boat ride to Channel Islands National Park which can be arranged through Island Packers Cruises.

4. Ventura Botanical Gardens

Ventura-Botanical-Gardens-In-Ventura

Ventura Botanical Gardens is a beautiful outdoor space just north of downtown Ventura. If you’re looking for relaxing activities in Ventura, put Ventura Botanical Garden on top of your list!

As locals, we come to Ventura Botanical Gardens quite often for the stunning scenery and excellent ocean views . This outdoor garden offers several miles of hiking trails that climb up to the top of a hill offering unobstructed ocean views along the way. The trails are very easy so it’s a great place to visit for families with little kids.

Ventura Botanical Gardens price for entrance is $7 per person , but they offer free visitor days on Fridays. This location also allows leashed dogs, but only on Wednesdays and Fridays. On all other days, dogs are not allowed.

There is a small visitor parking lot next to the Ventura Botanical Gardens welcome center where you can park your car and pay for the entrance fee before heading into the trails.

Location: Ventura Botanical Gardens

Hiking Tip:  Before heading out hiking, we like to download an offline map from the  AllTrails hiking app . This way we always have access to the trail map, even if we lose reception or get lost!

5. Take a Surfing Lesson

travel store ventura

If you’ve never tried surfing before, but it’s always been on top of your bucket list, you’re in luck! Ventura has some of the best surfing conditions on the Central Coast making it a wonderful place to learn surfing for beginners.

For the best experience, book this Ventura Surf Lesson which takes place on Mondo’s Beach, just 10 minutes north of Ventura. During the surfing lesson, the experienced instructors will teach you how to stand up on the surfboard, find your balance, and ride waves all the way to the shore.

I’ve taken numerous surfing lessons myself and it’s the fastest way to catch a wave without previous surfing experience . This Ventura surfing lesson includes all the necessary gear so you don’t have to worry about a thing!

6. Spencer Makenzie’s Seafood Restaurant

Tacos at Spencer Makenzies in Ventura

Spencer Makenzie’s is one of the most iconic seafood eateries in all of Ventura . While there are some fancier seafood restaurants in town (such as Brophy Bros. and Lure Fish House ), Spencer Makenzie’s remains our favorite.

Spencer Makenzie’s is known for their world-famous fish tacos that are a must-try! This family-operated no-frills restaurant is affordable yet creates food only using the best, freshest ingredients. Because of this, you can always expect to see a long line of customers waiting to try their food.

You can order food at the outdoor counter and the order will be called out when it’s ready. There is some seating outdoors and indoors, but the outdoor seating is very limited and tables get snatched up quickly.

Besides the fish tacos, a few of our favorites include the calamari tacos, grilled fish & shrimp burrito, Fish & Chips, and clam chowder.

Whenever our friends come to visit us in Ventura for the first time, we always take them for dinner and drinks at Rumfish y Vino restaurant in downtown Ventura. Rumfish y Vino is also a great place to dine if you’re looking for romantic things to do in Ventura for couples.

This gastropub-style restaurant has a beautiful modern interior with a relaxed, beachy vibe . Their dinner menu is limited but features drool-worthy choices such as Caribbean Fish Stew, Cochinita Pibil Tacos, Belize BBQ, and many seafood options.

Channel Islands National Park consists of five islands:

  • Anacapa Island

Within these islands, you can enjoy plenty of fun outdoor activities like camping, kayaking, snorkeling, wildlife sighting, and hiking amongst pristine landscapes. To reach the islands you will need to reserve a boat ride with Island Packers Cruises that depart from Ventura Harbor.

I’ve walked parts of the Ventura Ojai bike path when looking for a quick escape into nature with my dog. I’ve also run the entire length as part of the annual Ventura Marathon. The pathway is fairly flat with a little bit of downslope ( if you start in Ojai ).

With plenty of trees, lush vegetation, and views of the mountains, the Ventura Ojai bike path is one of the best places to take a bike out for a spin in Ventura!

14 Fun Things to Do in Ventura for a Day Trip

Ventura is an often overlooked city in California. Most people don’t even think to stop there, and likely only really know of it because of its historic pier and abundance of thrift shops, but there are so many fun things to do in Ventura that you’re going to want to stop in to check it out.

Ventura is truly an unexpected gem of a destination on the southern California coast, just one and a half hours north of Los Angeles . With its stunning and uncrowded beach, incredibly charming downtown area, and more craft breweries than you can imagine being in one town, Ventura is an ideal day trip destination from many of the top cities in California .

Ventura Pier things to do in ventura

We visited Ventura in early 2022 and fell in love with it so much that we moved there in September. It’s a gorgeous place, and the best part is that it’s not your typical tourist town.

In fact, it’s relatively untouched by tourism. Instead, you have pristine and nearly deserted beaches, a fantastic downtown that’s never too crowded, and plenty of unbridled sunshine.

If you’re planning a trip to Ventura, I’d love to show you all the great things there are to do here, so you can fill up your itinerary and spend a weekend enjoying this wonderful town.

How to Get to Ventura

To get to Ventura, you have two routes you can take. If you drive along Route 1, which hugs the coastline, you’ll get a sensational beachfront drive that’s really hard to beat. Or you can take the slightly faster route along Highway 101, but it doesn’t have a view.

The driving distance from Los Angeles to Ventura is approximately 63 miles, and the driving time can vary depending on traffic and other factors. On average, it takes about an hour to an hour and half to drive from LA to Ventura.

The driving distance from Santa Barbara to Ventura is approximately 30 miles. On average, it takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour to drive from Santa Barbara to Ventura.

Top Things to Do in Ventura

Once you arrive in Ventura, the first thing you’ll notice is the contrasting beautiful blue waters lapping against white sand beaches and the lush green mountains jutting up in front of you.

The beach in Ventura is a true gem. It’s practically empty most of the year, making you feel like you’re the luckiest person alive to be enjoying such a gorgeous spot.

San Buenaventura State Beach

San Buenaventura Beach

Spend some time on the beach near the historic pier. It’s the oldest in California. Grab a beer from MadeWest, some tacos from Beach House Tacos, and enjoy lunch on the pier.

There is plenty of parking at San Buenaventura State Beach for $10/day. Near the parking lot you can rent cruiser bikes, electric bikes, or four-wheel Surrey cycles from Wheel Fun Rentals . We see people peddling along the paved pier path all the time. It’s a great time.

We like to spend time in San Buenaventura park, which meanders along the waterfront. There are picnic tables and bathrooms, plus nice walking paths to the beach. You might even be lucky enough to visit while The Jolly Oyster is open. It’s a raw oyster bar food truck that’s delicious.

Ventura Beach is known for its excellent surfing conditions, and there are many surf schools and rental shops in the area.

Ventura Pier and Promenade

Ventura Pier

Stroll along the Ventura Pier and Promenade for breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and Ventura’s beautiful coastline . It’s one of the longest piers on the California coast, stretching out majestically into the Pacific Ocean, offering sweeping views of the coastline and the Channel Islands.

Our favorite thing to do at the pier is to grab a beer at MadeWest, a brewery located at the end of the pier, or get some tacos or a plate of grilled fish at Eric Ericsson’s Fish underneath the brewery, and just sit out on the picnic tables enjoying the view.

Wheel Fun Bike Rentals is located just on the beach next to the pier and you can rent bikes, electric bikes, or Surreys there. I often see families riding along the promenade in a surrey (which is a bit like a tuk tuk or a bicycle carriage).

Ojai Valley Trail

If you’re looking for something active to do, a great idea is to rent a bike from Wheel Fun and take a bike ride up the 9-mile Ojai Valley Trail that parallels Route 33 and leads all the way up to Ojai , which a cute little town in its own right.

The trail is paved and well maintained. You’ll see many other bikes, walkers, and runners on the path. It’s a great way to spend a sunny day.

Main Street

downtown ventura

From the beach, it’s a quick walk to Main Street, where you’ll find dozens of boutique shops, thrift stores, antiques, great restaurants, breweries, cocktail spots, and coffee shops.

A few streets of the downtown area have been turned into a pedestrian only zone, so there are lots of outdoor spaces to eat and grab a cocktail. Plus, you can stroll around shopping without worrying about traffic.

We like the downtown area for an afternoon of shopping and strolling. There are a few really nice homeware stores. I’m in love with Plum Gift Boutique and the little plant store that’s in the back, called Fiddle & Fern. Apparently Ventura used to be known as the thrift store capital of California. There are still quite a few thrift stores downtown.

After walking around, head to a seafood restaurant like Rumfish y Vino or Lure , or grab a cocktail at Bank of Italy Cocktail Trust or The Saloon . These are all great options for an afternoon in Ventura.

San Buenaventura Mission

San Buenaventura Mission

If you’re interested in history, the San Buenaventura Mission is a historic and cultural landmark nestled in the heart of downtown. It was founded in 1782 by Father Junipero Serra. Take in the beautiful architecture, learn about its rich history, and enjoy the peaceful gardens surrounding this historical mission. The museum displays artifacts from over 200 years ago.

Renowned as the ninth and last mission founded by Serra, the mission is a testament to early Spanish colonial architecture and history. You can explore its serene gardens, beautifully preserved church, and the extensive collection of artifacts and exhibits detailing the mission’s history and the life of the Chumash people. The mission’s bell tower has picturesque views of the city and the Pacific Ocean.

Ventura Botanical Gardens

The Ventura Botanical Gardens, tucked into the hillside behind Ventura City Hall, is a 107-acre sanctuary that showcases Mediterranean climate plants from around the world. The Gardens’ network of trails is a great way to take in the stunning panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, the Channel Islands, and the city of Ventura.

As you meander through the diverse plant collections, you’ll encounter a variety of flora, including the remarkable Chilean gardens and the South African plant exhibit. The Garden is not just a visual treat, it’s also a learning center promoting conservation, environmental education, and the celebration of the natural beauty of Ventura County.

Ventura Harbor Village

Ventura Harbor Village

Once you’ve left downtown, the next fun spot to check out is Ventura Harbor Village . There are a variety of shops, restaurants, and family-friendly attractions. You can rent a paddle boat (swans, dragons, and ducks available!) or a kayak to take out into the calm waters of the harbor, you can play around at Harbor Cove Beach, or even play a game at the beach volleyball courts.

We often go there around sunset to grab a glass of wine at Deep Sea Wine Tasting Room , then grab some dinner at the Boatyard Pub or Brophy Bros. , then grab an ice cream at Coastal Cone & Parlor. There’s also an Escape Room game and a comedy club at the harbor.

If you wanted to go whale watching or on a harbor cruise, this is where it leaves from. You can also get a ferry out to the Channel Islands from here with Island Packers .

The village is also home to weekend festivals and events throughout the year, so be sure to check the local event calendar during your visit.

Kayaking and Sailing

The Ventura Harbor is the perfect place for kayaking and sailing enthusiasts. You don’t have to bring your own equipment, and you don’t even have to know what you’re doing. You can rent equipment or take a class to explore the harbor and the nearby Channel Islands. The calm waters and breathtaking coast make this activity an unforgettable experience.

Nick surfing

Ventura’s beaches are known for their fantastic waves and talented surfers. The stretch of coastline along Ventura offers great surfing throughout the year. If you’re already experienced, you’ll know what to do, but if you’re a beginner, you’ll want to call up Ventura Surf School and book a lesson. They run them on a demand basis, so just give them a call to set up a lesson.

Whale Watching

A whale breaching

During the migration season, you have the opportunity to witness the magnificence of whales as they pass by Ventura’s coastline. Head to the harbor and embark on a guided whale watching tour, providing unforgettable up-close encounters with these gentle giants.

There are over 28 species of whales and dolphins that inhabit the waters of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, so it’s very likely that you’ll see more than you expected, depending on the time of year you go. We once were lucky enough to see a dolphin stampede in the waters between Ventura and the Channel Islands, and I can tell you it was absolutely a once in a lifetime experience.

Ventura Spirits

ventura spirits

Ventura Spirits is a craft distillery that started up in 2011, run by 4 guys. They’re making some unique spirits like YOLO, California’s version of a tequila, Amaro, Limoncello, and Prickly Pear brandy. If you have a few hours on your hands, you can head out to the distillery for a tasting and tour.

The distillery is located on 3891 N. Ventura Ave. Drop-in tastings ($12) are available Monday through Friday from 12:00pm – 5:00pm. Reserved tastings take place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Craft Breweries

Topa Topa Brewing Co

Located all around Ventura and neighboring Oxnard are more than 11 craft breweries that you can visit, such as Topa Topa Brewing Company , Seaward Brewing , and Transmission Brewing . We’ve been to every single one of them and definitely have our favorites, but there are many experiences to be had. Here are a few highlights:

  • Topa Topa has an incredible outdoor oasis of a space at 4880 Colt St. There’s always a food truck and (usually) lots of sun.
  • Transmission Brewing has a location at 1098 E Front St that shares a space with Topper’s Pizza (also one of our favorite pizza places in town). Grab a beer and a pizza!
  • Bellringer Brewery, one of the newest breweries in town, has an incredible double smash burger that you must try!
  • Leashless Brewing , housed in an old tire shop, is a certified organic brewery crafting gluten and gluten-reduced Belgian styles and IPAs. You can order food from Barrelhouse 101 next door.

Channel Islands National Park

Channel Islands

A visit to Ventura isn’t complete without exploring the breathtaking Channel Islands National Park . Comprising five beautiful remote islands, this park is known for its unique plants, wildlife, and archaeological resources.

There is only one company allowed to take visitors out there, Island Packers, so you’ll want to visit their website to get ferry tickets. It’s the only way to get there. Once you’re there, it’s hiking, bird-watching, snorkeling, and even spot some seals and sea-lions.

There are no facilities on the island, so it’s a very rustic and off-the-beaten-path experience. Be prepared with everything you need for the day.

Santa Rosa Island is very rare. It offers stunning views, outdoor activities, and a chance to experience the natural beauty of California with hardly any people and absolutely no services on land. There aren’t many places like this in the U.S.

Channel Islands Harbor

channel islands harbor boating

If you’ve got a bit more time on your hands, visit Channel Islands Harbor, in Oxnard, where you can rent a pontoon boat and float around the harbor. It costs something like $80 for an hour, and you can putt around all the fingers of the harbor with some wine and cheese on board.

On Sunday’s there’s a farmer’s market from 10am to 2pm, and there are plenty of places to stop for a drink or bite to eat with a view. You can also rent bikes from another location of Wheel Fun Rentals, or you can take out a kayak on the calm waters.

Accommodations

If you are looking for a hotel with ocean views, the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach is your best bet. The Ventura Beach Marriott is very close walking distance, but no views. Another popular hotels is the Amanzi Hotel , all located near the Ventura Pier and Promenade .

While in Ventura, you can also find budget-friendly options for your stay. Here is a list of hotels for you to browse and select the perfect accommodation within your budget.

Useful Information

Transportation and parking.

You can easily access the city by car via Highway 101 or use public transportation options like Amtrak. The Surfliner train station is easy walking distance from everything. If you prefer more sustainable modes of transport, consider renting a bike to explore the city and take advantage of Ventura’s well-developed network of bike lanes.

Parking in Ventura is generally hassle-free. There are numerous free public parking lots and if you can’t find a spot there (which has never happened to us), you can park on-street for pretty cheap. Make use of the Downtown Ventura parking map to find convenient parking locations near popular attractions.

Ventura’s climate can be described as Mediterranean, with mild temperatures year-round and an average annual temperature of 65°F (18°C). Here’s a brief overview of the weather conditions you can expect during your visit:

  • Spring (March-May): Ranging from 55°F (13°C) to 68°F (20°C), spring days in Ventura are generally sunny and mild, with occasional rain showers. There is a period of time from May to June that’s a bit gloomy. Locals call it May Grey and June Gloom. You’ve been warned.
  • Summer (June-August): Summer temperatures in Ventura typically average around 75°F (24°C) during the day, with cooler evenings. Coastal fog can roll in during the morning hours, often burning off by the afternoon.
  • Fall (September-November): Fall temperatures in Ventura vary between 58°F (14°C) and 78°F (25°C), with shorter days and cooler nights as the season progresses.
  • Winter (December-February): Winter in Ventura sees chilly temperatures between 45°F (7°C) and 65°F (18°C), with occasional rainfall. It’s essential to pack layers to stay warm during colder periods.

Keep in mind that weather can always be unpredictable, so it’s a good idea to check the local forecast before venturing out and pack appropriate clothing for possible weather changes during your visit.

Travel Planning Guide

🚙💨  Where should I book my rental car?

Renting a car is one of the best ways to get around in California, no matter where you’re visiting. Public transportation can only get your so far, even in big cities. I always rent with  Discover Cars , which checks the prices of all major rental car companies, so you get the best rates.

🛌  What’s the best way to book my accommodations?

For hotels and vacation rentals,  Booking.com or Expedia.com  are the best sites, but you can also book through TripAdvisor. If you’re considering renting a house instead, don’t forget to also check  VRBO , which is often cheaper than Airbnb.

🧳  What do I pack for California?

Head to the our California Packing List or Disneyland Packing List  to get all the info on packing.

✈️  What’s the best site to buy flights to California?

For finding cheap California flights from around the world, I recommend  Skyscanner . I’ve also had pretty good luck with Kayak.com .

See a Rare Comet, a Meteor Shower, Manhattanhenge, and More This Month

These are the best night-sky events to watch for this July.

Getty Images

Fireworks won’t be the only lights glittering in the July night skies. This month has a host of interstellar attractions in store, from a meteor shower and planet meetups to round two of the much-hyped Manhattanhenge in New York City and the sighting of a historic comet that hasn’t been visible from Earth since the year Disneyland opened. It’s an action-packed month that calls for early mornings and late nights, so whether you’re sky scouting on vacation, or catching the constellations in your own backyard, here are the best night-sky events to watch for this July.

July 1: Comet 13P/Olbers

Kick off the month with a history-making comet sighting — Comet 13P/Olbers to be exact. It’s the first time in 69 years that this comet will be visible from Earth. According to stargazing app Star Walk , your best time to catch it is early this month. However, it will remain visible (with stargazing binoculars or a telescope) into late July and August, but its brightness wanes as the summer goes on. It will have a magnitude from around 7.0 until July 28. Watch for it after sunset as it travels beneath Ursa Major toward the northwest horizon until about midnight.

July 3: Jupiter-Moon Conjunction

Set that alarm early on July 3, as Jupiter and the moon meet in the sky a few hours before sunset, depending on your viewing location, according to In-the-Sky.org . The space objects will appear within five degrees (roughly three finger widths) of each other, with the moon sliding above Jupiter.

 July 5: New Moon

See the stars and galaxies at their brightest tonight, July 5, the night of the new moon. The official time of the new moon is 6:57 p.m., according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac , but you can enjoy those inky skies — and the stars that bejewel them — all night, particularly from an area with minimal light pollution, such as the new DarkSky International-certified Beaver Island , the first Dark Sky Sanctuary in Michigan.

July 12-13: Manhattanhenge

If you missed May’s Manhattanhenge, you’re in luck: the spectacle — where the setting sun perfectly aligns with Manhattan’s city grid — is returning to the Big Apple this month. According to the American Museum of Natural History , the Manhattanhenge view with the full solar orb shining between the skyscrapers will occur at 8:20 p.m. ET on July 12. The half sun on the horizon version will appear the next evening, July 13, at 8:21 p.m. ET. Recommended viewing places include 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd, and 57th streets. Since the sun sets behind New Jersey, AMNH suggests a viewing point as far east on Manhattan as possible, as long as you can still see New Jersey.

July 21: Full Buck Moon

See the month’s full moon, nicknamed the “buck moon” for the antlers that begin growing on male deer around this time, on July 21. The moon will reach its fullest at 6:17 a.m. ET on Sunday, July 21, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac .

July 21: Mercury Reaches Greatest Eastern Elongation

If you haven’t seen Mercury yet this year, tonight’s the night. The “swift planet” — known for its quick movement across the sky — will reach its greatest eastern elongation around 11:30 p.m. ET on July 21, according to In-the-Sky.org . Find Mercury just after sunset in the constellation Leo, below bright Regulus, above the western horizon. You can view it with the naked eye, although binoculars or a telescope will enhance the view. Don’t miss Venus below and to the right of Mercury, too.

July 29-30: Delta Aquariid Meteor Shower Peak

Overnight from July 29 to 30 will welcome the peak of the Delta Aquariid meteor shower. This shower, which favors the southern hemisphere, could produce up to 20 meteors each hour under a dark, new-moon sky. The peak aligns with a 21 percent illuminated waning crescent moon; your best bet for catching the shower is from dusk to midnight, before the moon rises, according to EarthSky . Watch for it near the Aquarius constellation. If you’re lucky, you may snag a preview of another meteor shower that’s set to peak in August: the strong Perseids, which streak near the constellation Perseus.
