Fishing Reports

If you’ve considered Key Largo Fishing , think again and make the drive to Islamorada, Florida Keys ! We can arrange a custom tailored I slamorada fishing package . Most of the offshore charter boats at Bud n’ Mary’s Marina are owner/operator and vary in price due to their fuel burn/amenities/boat size. The backcountry skiffs are all owner/operator and most of them have near identical fixed costs, so their prices are the same. We do not offer any discounted rates for “ Islamorada fishing packages ” since we do not own the boats. We are very happy to organize an unforgettable fishing package for you though if you call us in the office at 1 800 742 7945!

Examples of “multi day fishing packages” would include fishing on both offshore and backcountry boats. There are so many different fish to catch in Islamorada, mixing it up a little bit is highly recommended. However, if you favor one type of fishing over another, feel free to book multiple days doing that! When you stay right here at Bud n’ Mary’s in our lodging, you’ll be right in the middle of sportfishing heaven!

With so many options, it’s all about matching your group’s vibe and fishing expectations with the perfect charter and professional guide.

Let’s dive into how to pick the best fishing trip for your group, ensuring your trip to the coast is nothing short of spectacular.

Learn more as we reel in all the details on the various charters Florida has to offer!

Fishing Experience Matters:

Captain Randall, with over a decade of experience navigating the Gulf Coast, has become a trusted name in the fishing community. His expertise and passion for fishing guarantee not just a trip but an exciting experience where where you’re not only chasing the big catch but learning and appreciating the art of fishing.

What Can We Catch in Florida?:

Whether you’re aiming for the acrobatic tarpon, the elusive snook, the steadfast redfish, trout, the formidable grouper, snapper, or more, Captain Randall’s fishing packages cater to individual anglers looking for excitement and challenges. Each trip is meticulously planned to offer the best fishing spots, techniques, and opportunities to land your dream catch.

What is the Average cost of a Florida Fishing Charter?

The average cost of a Florida fishing charter varies widely depending on what you want to do and how many friends you bring along. From $400 for a solo inshore fishing trip to $800 for a group of four targeting Gag Grouper, there’s a range of options to fit different budgets and interests. Just remember, bigger groups tend to lower the cost per angler, so it’s worth inviting a few buddies along for the ride.

If you’re planning a fishing charter in Florida, you’re probably curious about how much it’s going to set you back. Let’s dive straight into the numbers, no fluff, just what you need to know.

Florida Mangrove Snapper Fishing Trips

Inshore Trout & Redfish Trips

For those looking to hit the inshore waters for Speckled trout or redfish trips ?, where you can target a variety of species all year round, it starts at $400 for a solo angler and bumps up to $600 if you’re bringing a party of four. It seems the more, the merrier—and slightly more cost-effective per person.

Nearshore Grouper Trips

Got your eyes on a mighty Gag Grouper fishing trip ? These trips are a bit seasonal, running from September to November.

A duo can expect to pay $600, while a group of four will be looking at $800.

Tarpon Fishing Trips

Florida Tarpon fishing trips , a favorite for many between April and July, starts at $600 for one angler and goes up to $800 for two. It looks like there’s no room for larger parties in this adventure, so keep it intimate if tarpon is what you’re after.

Florida Scallop Trips

And if you’re thinking of something a bit different, like a Florida Scalloping Trip during July to September, that’s only an option for groups of four to six, costing $400 and $500, respectively. A great deal if you’re looking to combine some fun in the sun with your fishing trip.

Fishing Trip Packages: The Ultimate Florida Getaway

A picture of Crystal River Florida Fishing Adventures Fishing Trip Packages: The Ultimate Florida Getaway

Last Updated on January 11, 2023 by Eric Bonneman

Fishing in Florida is one of the state’s most beloved pastimes, and what better way to experience it than with a trip package from Florida Fishing Adventures ? They have been offering all-inclusive vacation packages for years, designed to fit the experience you are dreaming about. The packages include all the amenities necessary for an experience of a lifetime!

Crystal River: The Heart of Fishing Opportunities

Crystal River is home to many essences of wildlife that are sometimes difficult to see in just one day. The backwoods of the mangrove forests , seasonal scalloping, dolphin watching, and playing in the springs with the manatees are just a few of the not to be missed outdoor activities in Citrus County.

And the best part is that Florida Fishing Adventures’ “Client Condo” is located in the heart of Crystal River on a quiet street, giving you the feeling of a true getaway. The condo is perfect for a couple or small family, with a queen bed, double sofa bed, full kitchen, large jacuzzi tub, walk-in closet, private entrance, and a large deck with a grill.

Fishing Experiences for Everyone

For those who want to fish in the Gulf of Mexico, Florida Fishing Adventures offers fishing for Redfish , snook, trout, black drum, flounder, and more, targeting these species in the expansive grass flats, creeks, rivers, oyster bars, and grass flats in Crystal River. They also offer “World Class” year-round fly fishing opportunities for fly anglers of all skill levels, targeting Redfish, Speckled Trout, Tarpon, Tripletail, Jack Crevalle, Mackerel, Bonita, and other species in the clear flats of Crystal River and Homosassa.

Another exciting option is Tarpon fishing, with peak season from May through June, but these hard-fighting fish can be targeted throughout the year until January.

Shark Fishing Adventure

Florida Fishing Adventures offers shark fishing charters in Crystal River for those looking for an adrenaline rush. With an active season that lasts from Spring through Fall, it is rarely a bad time to schedule a shark fishing charter.

The shark species available to target include Blacktip Sharks, Tiger Sharks, Bull Sharks, Sharpnose Sharks, and Hammerhead Sharks. Not only is shark fishing an exciting experience, but it is also kid-friendly and can provide a lot of action. Additionally, some species can be harvested for their meat and shared with family and friends.

Kayak Fishing on the Nature Coast

Florida Fishing Adventures offers kayak fishing for a more peaceful and tranquil experience. Many of the most beautiful areas in Florida and along the Nature Coast are only accessible by kayaks and canoes during certain times of the year. During the times of the year when the local tides are less than ideal, many of the targeted backcountry creeks and coves can be dry or have very little water.

However, kayak fishing in these shallow waters can be exciting and thrilling as it allows anglers to target species like Redfish, Speckled Trout , Sheephead, Black Drum, and Snook. The unspoiled islands scattered throughout the Nature Coast are a “World Class” kayaking experience that can’t be beaten anywhere in Florida.

Scalloping, Grouper fishing, and much more

In addition to these experiences, Florida Fishing Adventures also offers Scalloping during the appropriate season, and grouper fishing in the shallow waters of Crystal River, targeting these fish in anywhere from 8 feet to 35 feet of water. Crystal River is home to fantastic bottom habitats for these fish to hide and ambush their prey and house them all year long.

Now.. Let’s Get on the Water

Florida Fishing Adventures offers a wide range of fishing experiences for all skill levels and interests. Whether you are a seasoned angler or a first-timer, they have something to offer. From inshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico to fly fishing and kayak fishing in the Nature Coast, they strive to make your experience unforgettable with their all-inclusive packages, great accommodations, and professional guides that cater to all clients.

So come and enjoy a “Beautiful Day in Paradise” with Florida Fishing Adventures, and discover the incredible fishing opportunities that Crystal River and the Nature Coast offer. You will be surrounded by Mother Nature’s beauty and the thrill of reeling in a big catch. Additionally, with the added perks of dinner reservations, and lunch catered onboard by Sea Hag Deli, you can enjoy a delicious meal after a day out on the water. So book your trip with Florida Fishing Adventures today , and start planning your ultimate Florida getaway!

Terms and Conditions

The charter boat SOUTHBOUND is a locally built 40 ft. fiberglass sportfisherman. On all fishing trips, tackle and bait are provided. Anglers need only bring sunscreen, perhaps a camera and whatever you wish to eat or drink. Cooler space and ice are provided.

Your three days of fishing can be any three days of your stay provided I have no prior reservations on that date. You may pick your days when making your reservations.

Generally, I suggest an alternate day schedule, (Mon, Wed, Fri). This allows for a rest day between fishing trips and decreases the chances of consecutive foul weather days.

In case of un-fishable weather a trip is automatically re-booked to the next open day. If there are no open days (due to other bookings) a $350.00 refund will be issued for each trip missed. Un-fishable weather is determined by myself as Captain.

Remember, we are fortunate because we can fish the Atlantic or the Gulf of Mexico. Poor conditions in one usually means protected waters in the other and both provide the opportunity for some quality trophy fishing.

After a day of fishing, the mate will gladly fillet some of the catch for you. Customers are encouraged to enjoy their catch while they are in Key West and are welcome to bring the rest home with them.

Reservations may be secured with a credit card or a 50% cash deposit. Cashiers Checks, Money Orders & Travelers’ checks = Cash, however any form of payment that that must be processed by my financial institution must be received no less than 2 weeks prior to arrival.

If a credit card is used, customers must fill out and return the Southbound Reservation form to hold the reservation. The form will be emailed, faxed or mailed upon request.

No personal checks accepted unless received at least 14 days prior to arrival date. In the case of a cancellation, the deposit is refundable with a minimum of 30 days notice.

Accommodations occupancy is for up to 4 people maximum. Check-in is 2 P.M. and check-out is 10 A.M. However, arrival and departure times may be flexible depending upon other bookings. Please call before making your airline reservations. No pets allowed.

Additional days of accommodations or fishing are available barring a conflict with other reservations.

Cash discounts do not apply to Vacation Specials. If a credit card is used as payment, please add 5% service fee.

When Sport Fishing it is customary to tip the mate approximately 15-20% of the charter price. This is not included in the package price.

Table of Contents

What are Florida Keys Fishing Packages?

Florida Keys fishing packages are all-inclusive vacation packages that offer the opportunity to experience world-class fishing in the beautiful waters of the Florida Keys. These packages are designed to cater to both experienced anglers and beginners, providing everything you need for a successful and enjoyable fishing trip. Whether you prefer deep-sea fishing, inshore fishing, or backcountry fishing, there are various types of packages available to suit your preference.

Benefits of All Inclusive Packages

Opting for an all-inclusive fishing package in the Florida Keys comes with a multitude of benefits. Firstly, these packages provide a hassle-free experience, as they typically include accommodation, fishing equipment, boat and captain, fishing licenses, meals and drinks, and transportation. This means you don’t have to worry about arranging each aspect of your fishing trip individually.

Another advantage of all-inclusive packages is the cost savings. By bundling all the necessary components together, you often get a better deal compared to booking each element separately. Additionally, these packages allow you to focus solely on enjoying your fishing experience, without the need to worry about the logistics and planning.

Popular Fishing Locations in the Florida Keys

The Florida Keys offer a diverse range of fishing locations that cater to different types of anglers. Some of the popular fishing spots in the area include Islamorada, Key Largo, Marathon, and Key West. Each location has its own unique charm and offers a variety of fishing opportunities, from deep-sea adventures to exploring the backcountry. Whether you’re looking for trophy-sized game fish or a relaxing day of inshore fishing, the Florida Keys have something to offer for everyone.

Types of Fishing Packages

Deep sea fishing packages.

For those seeking an adrenaline-filled fishing experience, deep sea fishing packages in the Florida Keys are the way to go. These packages typically involve venturing far offshore, targeting large game fish such as marlin, sailfish, tuna, and mahi-mahi. Anglers can expect to spend the day on a well-equipped fishing boat, accompanied by experienced captains and crews who know the best spots to find the most coveted catches.

Inshore Fishing Packages

If you prefer a more relaxed fishing experience without venturing too far from the shore, inshore fishing packages are a fantastic option. Inshore fishing in the Florida Keys offers the opportunity to target species such as snook, redfish, tarpon, and bonefish. These packages often involve fishing in the shallower waters of the flats, mangroves, and channels, where the expertise of a knowledgeable guide can increase your chances of landing a prized catch.

Backcountry Fishing Packages

For those who enjoy exploring untouched and remote areas, backcountry fishing packages are the perfect choice. The backcountry of the Florida Keys is a vast network of flats, mangroves, and basins teeming with a wide variety of fish species. Anglers who choose this type of package can expect to target species such as trout, snapper, jacks, and snook. Backcountry fishing allows you to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of this unique ecosystem.

What’s Included in All Inclusive Packages

When you book an all-inclusive fishing package in the Florida Keys, accommodation is typically included. Depending on the package you choose, you can expect to stay in a hotel, resort, or private rental property that caters specifically to anglers. These accommodations often provide amenities such as fishing gear storage, cleaning stations, and easy access to the water for launching your boat.

Fishing Equipment

One of the major advantages of all-inclusive fishing packages is that they provide all the necessary fishing equipment. From fishing rods and reels to bait and tackle, you’ll have access to top-quality gear that is tailored to the specific fishing techniques and species you’ll be targeting. This saves you the hassle of bringing your own equipment or worrying about what gear to purchase.

Boat and Captain

All-inclusive fishing packages also include a fishing boat and an experienced captain who will guide you throughout your fishing trip. The boats are typically well-maintained and equipped with modern technology to ensure a safe and successful outing. The captains have extensive knowledge of the local waters and can provide insights and tips to help you maximize your fishing experience.

Fishing Licenses

One of the essential components of fishing in the Florida Keys is having the appropriate licenses. All-inclusive fishing packages typically include fishing licenses for all participants, ensuring that you can fish legally and hassle-free. This saves you the time and effort of applying for licenses individually, as the charter company takes care of this on your behalf.

Meals and Drinks

To keep you energized and satisfied throughout your fishing adventure, all-inclusive packages often include meals and drinks. Depending on the package, you may be provided with a variety of options, including packed lunches, on-board refreshments, or vouchers for local restaurants. It’s important to check the package details to ensure that your dietary preferences and restrictions are accommodated.

Getting to and from your fishing location can be a challenge, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the area. All-inclusive fishing packages typically include transportation to and from the fishing grounds, ensuring that you arrive on time and in comfort. This could involve shuttle services from your accommodation to the dock or arrangements for a private transfer.

Florida Keys Fishing Packages All Inclusive

Choosing the Right Package

When selecting a fishing package, consider the size of your group. Some packages are designed for small groups or solo anglers, while others cater to larger groups or families. It’s important to choose a package that can comfortably accommodate everyone in your group to ensure an enjoyable and stress-free experience.

Duration of the Trip

The duration of fishing trips can vary depending on your preferences and availability. Some packages offer half-day trips, while others provide full-day or multi-day excursions. Consider how much time you’d like to spend on the water and choose a package that aligns with your preferences. Keep in mind that longer trips often provide more opportunities to catch a variety of fish species.

While all-inclusive fishing packages provide excellent value for money, it’s essential to consider your budget when selecting a package. Prices can vary depending on the type of fishing, the duration of the trip, and the level of amenities provided. Determine your budget in advance and choose a package that fits within your financial constraints without compromising on the quality of the experience.

Fishing Experience

Consider your level of fishing experience when choosing a package. Some packages are tailored for experienced anglers who are looking for a challenging and technical fishing experience. Other packages are beginner-friendly, with guides who provide instruction and support to ensure an enjoyable outing. Choose a package that matches your skill level and fishing aspirations.

Booking Process

Research and compare options.

Before booking a fishing package, it’s important to research and compare different options. Look for reputable fishing charter companies that have a good track record and positive reviews from other anglers. Take the time to compare the packages they offer, ensuring that they align with your preferences and requirements.

Contacting Fishing Charter Companies

Once you’ve narrowed down your options, reach out to the fishing charter companies to gather more information. Ask about package availability, pricing, and any additional details you may need to know. This is also a good opportunity to get a feel for the company’s customer service and professionalism.

Discussing Package Inclusions and Exclusions

When contacting the fishing charter companies, make sure to discuss what is included in the package and any potential exclusions. Clarify any questions you may have, such as the types of meals provided, the size of the boats, and the experience level of the captains. This will help you make an informed decision and ensure that there are no surprises during your trip.

Making a Reservation

Once you’ve found the perfect fishing package, it’s time to make a reservation. Most charter companies will require a deposit to secure your booking, with the remaining balance due closer to the date of the trip. Make sure to read and understand the cancellation and refund policies before finalizing your reservation.

Preparing for the Trip

Packing essentials.

Before embarking on your fishing adventure, it’s essential to pack the right essentials. This includes appropriate clothing, such as lightweight and moisture-wicking shirts, a hat, sunglasses, and comfortable shoes with non-slip soles. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, insect repellent, a camera to capture your catches, and any personal medications or prescriptions you may require.

Getting Travel Insurance

To protect yourself and your investment, consider getting travel insurance before your trip. Travel insurance can provide coverage for unexpected events, such as trip cancellations, lost luggage, or medical emergencies. Review the policy terms and conditions to ensure it aligns with your needs and provides adequate coverage for your fishing adventure.

Health and Safety Considerations

Your health and safety should always be a priority when going on a fishing trip. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, as the Florida Keys can get hot and humid. Familiarize yourself with basic first aid procedures and bring a small first aid kit in case of minor injuries. Follow the instructions and advice of your captain to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Weather and Seasonal Factors

Keep an eye on the weather forecast leading up to your fishing trip. While the Florida Keys generally offer favorable fishing conditions year-round, it’s important to be aware of any potential storms or unfavorable weather patterns. Discuss with your captain any concerns you may have about weather conditions and make necessary adjustments to your trip if needed.

A Day in the Life of a Fishing Package

Morning departure.

On the day of your fishing trip, be prepared for an early start. Your captain will typically specify the meeting time, so make sure to arrive on time and ready for an adventure. You’ll join your fellow anglers at the dock, where you’ll be greeted by the captain and crew, and introduced to your fishing boat for the day.

Fishing Techniques and Tips

Once on board, your captain will provide a safety briefing and give an overview of the fishing techniques you’ll be using. Depending on the type of fishing package you’ve chosen, you may be trolling, bottom fishing, or casting lures. Pay attention to the captain’s instructions and ask any questions you may have to maximize your chances of a successful catch.

Lunch and Refreshments

Throughout the day, your captain will ensure that you are well-fed and hydrated. Enjoy a packed lunch or on-board refreshments, taking a break from fishing to refuel and relax. This is also a great opportunity to share stories and tips with your fellow anglers and build camaraderie.

Afternoon Fishing

After lunch, it’s back to fishing as you continue exploring the waters of the Florida Keys. Follow the guidance of your captain and use the techniques you’ve learned earlier in the day. Be patient and persistent, as fishing can sometimes require waiting for the perfect moment. Enjoy the scenic surroundings and the thrill of anticipation as you wait for your next bite.

Returning to the Dock

As the day draws to a close, your captain will guide the boat back to the dock. Take this time to reflect on the day’s catches and share your fishing highlights with your fellow anglers. Thank your captain and crew for their guidance and expertise in ensuring a memorable fishing experience.

Cleaning and Filleting Your Catch

If you’ve had a successful day on the water and caught some fish, many fishing packages include the option for the captain or crew to clean and fillet your catch. This ensures that you can take your fresh catch home with you and enjoy a delicious seafood meal. If you choose this option, take note of any local regulations regarding the size and quantity of fish you can keep.

Enjoying the Evening

After returning to your accommodation, take the time to relax and unwind. Share stories about your fishing adventure with friends and family, relishing in the memories you’ve made. Reflect on the beauty of the Florida Keys and the incredible experiences you had throughout the day.

Optional Activities and Excursions

Snorkeling and diving.

In addition to fishing, the Florida Keys offer incredible opportunities for snorkeling and diving. The crystal-clear waters are home to vibrant coral reefs and a diverse array of marine life. Add a snorkeling or diving excursion to your fishing package to explore the underwater wonders and experience the beauty of the Florida Keys from a different perspective.

For those who are passionate about the environment, consider adding an eco-tour to your fishing package. These tours provide the opportunity to explore the delicate ecosystems of the Florida Keys, including mangroves, seagrass beds, and bird sanctuaries. Learn about the unique flora and fauna that call the Keys home, and gain a deeper understanding of the importance of conservation.

Visit to Key West

No trip to the Florida Keys is complete without a visit to Key West. Known for its vibrant culture, breathtaking sunsets, and lively nightlife, Key West offers a wide range of activities for visitors. Walk along Duval Street, explore historical sites such as the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, or simply relax on the beach and soak in the island vibes.

Dolphin Watching

Experience the magic of swimming with dolphins by adding a dolphin-watching excursion to your fishing package. The Florida Keys are home to pods of wild dolphins, and many tour operators offer the opportunity to observe these playful creatures in their natural habitat. Witness their acrobatic displays and enjoy an up-close encounter with these intelligent and captivating creatures.

Relaxing on the Beach

After a day of fishing and exploring, take some time to relax on the pristine beaches of the Florida Keys. With turquoise waters and soft, sandy shores, the beaches offer the perfect place to unwind and soak up the sun’s rays. Set up a beach picnic, go for a swim, or simply lounge under the shade of a palm tree and savor the beauty of your surroundings.

Tips for a Successful Fishing Trip

Listen to your captain.

Your captain is a wealth of knowledge and experience, so be sure to listen to their guidance and instructions. They know the local waters and fishing techniques that work best, so trust their expertise and use their advice to improve your chances of catching fish.

Stay Hydrated

Spending a day out on the water can be physically demanding, so it’s important to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid excessive consumption of alcohol, as it can lead to dehydration and impair your fishing experience.

Bring Sun Protection

The Florida Keys are known for their abundant sunshine, so it’s crucial to protect yourself from the strong rays. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, shades with UV protection, and apply sunscreen regularly to prevent sunburn and minimize the risk of skin damage.

Be Patient and Persistent

Fishing requires patience and persistence, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t catch a fish right away. Enjoy the process and take pleasure in the peacefulness of being on the water. Remember that every fishing trip is unique, and the thrill of the catch is worth the wait.

Enjoy the Experience

Above all, remember to enjoy the experience. Fishing in the Florida Keys offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature, spend time with loved ones, and create lifelong memories. Take in the sights and sounds of the beautiful surroundings, appreciate the camaraderie of your fellow anglers, and cherish the adventure.

Recommended for Experienced Anglers Only

For all your tackle needs, visit  our online store . All orders can be set for pick up on the day of your trip, or shipping available on select products.

You want to bring 3-5 rods:

For mangrove snapper, porgies, vermillion and yellowtails we would recommend a high speed reel or two speed reel with 40-50lb test, 4oz lead, and 6ot double snelled hooks. If you don’t know how to tie a double snell knot, check out this video: [How to tie double snell rig]( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiaOiD1Bcvs )

For red grouper, red snapper and average gags a 6ot reel with 60-80lb test, 6-8oz leads and 7-8ot hooks.

For big gags and Amberjack we recommend a bigger 9ot reel with 100lb test and maybe even 125lb leader with 8oz lead and 10ot hooks would be great

If you want to troll on the way out, we recommend using at least a 9ot reel or a two speed 50-80 wide and for more info on trolling recommendation check out the [FAQs]( https://www.hubbardsmarina.com/faqs/ ) page.

Spinning rods are not recommended for bottom fishing, but you can use them for knocker rig fishing, flat line fishing or pitch bait fishing. We would recommend 5000-8000 size reels and 50lb test line.

Notes:  Fishing time begins around 12-1 a.m., lasting until about 8-9 p.m. This trip is like a two day camping trip, so don’t forget to bring a sleeping bag, pillow, toiletries, towel, and change of clothes. Bunks and hot showers included; meals available in the “Galley”.

This is a long range advanced angler trip. You will want to bring two to three changes of clothes for the trip. You want to pack like you’re going camping so bring a sleeping bag, pillow and maybe a sheet to sleep with on your assigned bunk. We do have a shower on board and many like to take a shower after fishing before going to sleep on the way home so make sure you have stuff to shower with like soap, towel and toothbrush and toothpaste. We do recommend some shower sandals too.

If you got one bring a small 6-12 pack cooler and a big thing of salt to brine your dead bait on the way offshore. If you’re not renting a rod make sure to bring your own tackle for the trip as well. Also, Closed toe shoes, we recommend fishing boots as the best footwear (anything else at your own risk).

We would recommend bringing a venting tool as well as a dehooker or hook remover tool. We do have said items for sale inside of the store if you do not have / forgot one.

Cash if you want to buy food or drink from galley if you don’t have meal plan and to join the jackpot for largest fish. Finally, make sure to check FAQs page below for helpful info on what NOT to bring.

On Our 10, 12, 39, and 44 hour trips, we NOW ALLOW ELECTRONICS – Cell Phones, Computers, iPad, kindles, iPod and more. Take some pictures and share them with us!

Remember when bringing your mobile phones will not send or receive texts or make calls once you’re offshore.

39 hr. Overnight Trip Meal Package:

$54.95 – includes small meal on way out, midnight snack, breakfast, lunch, big dinner 2 nd day + 4 chips, 4 candy or granola bars, 8 sodas & unlimited free water + coffee, also happy hr beer.

Times for meals : Lite dinner at 5pm, lite sandwich at 12am, breakfast at 6am, and dinner at 6pm

Cut squid and threadfins are provided on board at no extra charge. Pinfish do work well but it’s simply and extra option. You don’t NEED it, but it does work well some days better than others. Live pinfish work well for the big grouper, amberjack, red snapper and big mangroves. Live shrimp is not needed on this trip but if the bite slows using it on your light tackle sometimes does help get you mangrove snapper, yellowtail and other smaller species to bite.

Pinfish must be ordered 48 hours in advanced or more ($11 per dozen)

Live shrimp can be purchased ahead of time of the day of the trip. ($10 for two doz in a bait bucket, $20 for five doz in a bait bucket)

Each angler has their own personal live well that is the same number as their spot number.

We recommend 3-4 doz pinfish per angler if you so choose

We would recommend 2-5 doz live shrimp per angler if you so choose

  • Glass – unsafe on boats
  • Alcohol -Due to Florida law they will not allow alcohol on board boats with alcohol licenses ( Florida Fisherman, Friendly Fisherman, Sea Adventure 1) because our license lets us sell it and the tax man wants his cut.  However, on our private charter boats like the HUB, Mrs. HUB and Flying HUB 2 DO NOT have alcohol licenses, you can bring beer or wine (no liquor and no glass) on these boats. ( 12 hour EXTREME aboard Flying HUB 2  – you CAN BRING YOUR OWN BEER)
  • Firearms – no matter your permit you can’t bring firearms due to USCG law (just like on a plane)
  • Illegal drugs – if it’s illegal on the dock leave it on the dock, or else we will have to call the USCG and have cops waiting on dock… please don’t put us in this position
  • NO Bananas – They are bad luck on a fishing boat
  • No coolers larger than 48 quarts .
  • NO PERSONAL LIVEWELLS  – you are more than welcome to bring your own bait and load it into the livewells onboard our boat.

We do not have a Reel Spooling Machine here at Hubbard’s Marina, but they do have one at Gator Jim’s Tackle Shop ! Stop by today and let em know Hubbard’s Sent you!

Florida Fishing Lodges and Resorts

Fishing Lodges and Vacations In Florida

Florida’s best saltwater fishing occurs in the Keys, a line of islands off the southern coast. The Keys have tarpon, bonefish, permit, and snook. The Florida Keys are famed for fishing, lovely beaches, pristine waterways, and stunning views.

The Gulf of Mexico is another Florida fishing spot. Red snapper, grouper, and amberjack are Gulf fish.

Florida’s rivers and lakes offer great fishing. Anglers catch largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie in the St. Johns River. The Okeechobee Waterway has largemouth bass, bluegill, and other fish.

Florida hosts many fishing contests and activities. Anglers from across the nation fight for prizes and glory at these competitions. The Key West Fishing Tournament, Islamorada Sailfish Tournament, and Florida Tarpon Fishing Tournament are popular Florida fishing tournaments.

Florida has many fishing options for beginners. Beginners can learn fishing basics from expert fishermen at various fishing schools, courses, and clinics across the state. Many fishing charters and guides provide instructional trips to help anglers improve.

Recreational fishing is popular in Florida, but fishers must respect state and federal restrictions and fish responsibly. Follow catch restrictions, use suitable gear and procedures to minimise fish harm, and release undersized or protected fish.

Florida loves recreational fishing for good reason. Florida is a delight for anglers of all skill levels due to its diversified fish populations, picturesque waterways, and many fishing events.

Why go Fishing in Marathon, Florida?

Fish Caught Near Marathon, Florida

Marathon’s strategic location in the Middle Keys provides access to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, offering a unique variety of fishing opportunities. The area is known for its rich marine biodiversity, stunning coral reefs, and favorable fishing conditions, making it a top choice for anglers of all skill levels.

Best Seasons for Fishing in Marathon, Florida

Fishing in Marathon is productive throughout the year, but certain seasons are particularly favorable for specific types of fish. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect each season:

Spring (March to May)

Spring is an excellent time to fish in Marathon as the warming waters increase fish activity. During these months, you can expect to catch Sailfish, Mahi-Mahi (Dolphin Fish), and Tarpon..

Summer (June to August)

Summer is the peak fishing season in Marathon. The warm weather and calm seas provide ideal inshore and offshore fishing conditions. Key catches include Yellowtail Snappers, Blackfin Tuna, and Bonefish.

Fall (September to November)

Fall offers cooler temperatures and continued excellent fishing opportunities. Fish are feeding heavily in preparation for winter. Expect to catch Mutton Snapper, Permit, and Wahoo.

Winter (December to February)

Winter fishing in Marathon is less crowded but still rewarding. The cooler water temperatures affect fish behavior, but there are still plenty of opportunities to catch Groupers, King Mackerel, and Barracuda.

Types of Fish in Marathon

Marathon’s waters are home to various fish species, each offering a unique challenge and reward. Here are some of the most sought-after catches:

Inshore Fish

Tarpon Caught Near Marathon, Florida

Tarpon have large, shiny silver scales and an elongated body. They are famous for their acrobatic leaps when hooked. Usually found in coastal waters, estuaries, and near river mouths, tarpon can be caught using heavy tackle with live bait such as mullet or crabs, casting to schools of fish, or drifting bait in strong tidal currents.

Bonefish Caught Near Marathon, Florida

These sleek, silver fish are known for their speed and are often found in shallow flats. Use light tackle with live shrimp or crabs, or artificial lures such as jigs, casting to schools of Bonefish in the shallow waters.

Permit Caught Near Marathon, Florida

Sleek and silver with a dark spot behind the pectoral fin, Permit are strong fighters found around wrecks and reefs. Medium to heavy tackle with live crabs or shrimp is effective, particularly when sight fishing in shallow waters or near structures.

Snook Caught Near Marathon, Florida

These fish have a distinctive lateral line running from gill to tail and are known for their strong fighting abilities. Snook are commonly found around mangroves, docks, and bridges. The best technique for catching snook is using live bait such as pilchards or shrimp, or artificial lures like jigs and topwater plugs.

Offshore Fish

Sailfish Caught Near Marathon, Florida

These fish have a long, slender body and a large dorsal fin resembling a sail. Known for their speed and acrobatics, Sailfish are commonly found offshore. Use heavy tackle with live bait such as goggle-eye or ballyhoo, trolling or drifting near offshore currents.

Mahi-Mahi(Dolphin Fish)

Mahi-Mahi Caught Near Marathon, Florida

Vibrant green and yellow, Mahi-Mahi are known for their striking colors and strong fight. They are typically found in offshore waters. Light to medium tackle with live bait such as small fish or squid, or trolling with brightly colored lures, is effective.

Blackfin Tuna

Blackfin Tuna Caught Near Marathon, Florida

These fish have a streamlined body with dark blue and black coloring. Blackfin Tuna are found in deeper offshore waters. Use heavy tackle with live bait such as sardines or bonito, trolling or drifting in areas with strong currents.

By   Mike Miller  Updated January 16, 2024

Florida fish camps are great places to experience authentic Old Florida.

They are sometimes overlooked as lodging choices, but many of them do have guest rooms or cabins.  This makes them great places to get away for a few days or weeks and experience natural Florida.

Honest John's Fish Camp, Melbourne Beach

Fish camps are typically family owned and give you an experience of being part of the family with all of the benefits of local knowledge.

There are fish camps in all eight geographic regions of Florida with a wide variety of fishing and lodging choices.

Panavista Lodge, Lake Panasoffkee

Quite often, fishing is optional at a fish camp.   Even if you don't fish, you can chill out, rent boats and explore the area on the water or on the back roads in a true Old Florida getaway.

Florida was first settled along its Atlantic and Gulf coasts, and not long after the settlers began to arrive and set up communities on the state's many rivers and lakes.

Florida fish camps are quite often representative of that kind of Old Florida.

Most of them do not have lodging accommodations, and when they do they are often spartan and not plush by most standards.

Rooms at fish camps are usually quite a bit cheaper than their fancier counterparts among the chain motels and hotels on the busier highways.

Cabin at Florida fish camp

If you choose a fish camp without lodging, they are still great places for day trips to launch your own boat or rent one of theirs.

Many fish camps also offer fishing guides and conduct ecotours along the water bodies they inhabit.

Waterfront at a Florida Fish Camp

Waterfront property in Florida is ever increasing in value and this puts the pressure on fish camps.

Many have sold out in recent years and what remains in their place is not Old Florida, but New Florida with its high rise condominiums and waterfront restaurants.

Many waterfront restaurants in Florida carry the moniker "fish camp" and we list them from time to time anyway.  Just be advised they may not be the real deal.

We have organized this page on fish camps using the 8 geographic regions of Florida shown on the map above.

Enjoy a Florida fish camp or Mom & Pop waterfront motel while you still can.  Here's a list of some of them across Florida.

Central West Florida fish camps are on the estuaries along the Gulf Coast, and on the rivers and lakes that are all over the region.  Many of these camps offer lodging, and others just offer you a great place to launch your boat or rent one of theirs and get out on the water.

There are literally hundreds of lakes in Central West Florida ranging in size from small ponds to major chains like Tsala Apopka at Floral City and Inverness , and Lake Panasoffkee near the town of the same name.

The Withlacoochee River is the main stream flowing through this part of Florida.

Many of the lakes in Central West Florida are spring fed and most of them are loaded with fish.  Some fish camps have lodging, others are just great places to launch your boat or rent one of theirs and get out on the water.

Southwest Florida fish camps are becoming scarce because of the rising value of waterfront property.

Many rustic little camps that existed no more than ten years ago are now just footnotes in history, replaced by high rise condominiums and waterfront restaurants.

There are still a few in the boonies of Collier and Charlotte Counties, and in the fishing village of Everglades City.

A few still remain, and some of them offer rustic lodging in the authentic Old Florida style.  Others are great places to fish. There is something for everybody in Southeast Florida.

How a boundary waters fishing trip turned tragic and led to an extraordinary rescue and search.

Erik Grams saw he was at a point of no return. Then, in an instant, he was swept past it.

His canoe pulled into the mouth of a 30-foot waterfall, he was tossed into boulders and cascading current, on a knife's edge between life and death.

In seconds, Grams was thrown underwater at the base of the falls. Struggling and clawing to the surface in the current, he caught a glimpse of the sky. Then, after a gasp for air, he was thrust downward again, and a third time.

Grams had gone to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness — and remote Curtain Falls on the Canadian border — in mid-May, along with his younger brother Reis and three companions. The brothers, sometimes with others, had taken many trips into the wilderness, and expected this one to be no different: walleyes on a stringer, campfires at night, stars bright in the sky.

Reis and Erik were in one canoe, and friends Jesse Haugen and Kyle Sellers were nearby in another. They were fishing on Crooked Lake's pool above Curtain Falls, where it dumps into Iron Lake.

Then, the lake's calm water turned the tables on their canoes. They went over the falls.

Struggling in the current, Erik fractured his pelvis. Briefly, he caught a glimpse of Haugen — but never saw his brother again.

"I was grieving while I was underwater," he said. "It was so bad and unbelievable.''

Now, more than three weeks later and more than a week after the bodies of Haugen, 41, and Reis Grams, 40, were recovered from the wilderness , their kin and friends continue to grieve. Services for Grams were Tuesday in Blaine. Haugen's life was celebrated June 6. Erik Grams, 43, meanwhile, and Sellers, 47, who broke a leg, continue to heal from their injuries.

For nearly 24 hours — from the early light of May 18 into the overnight hours of May 19 — a fishing trip with a long family history and so much promise had descended into an epic BWCAW rescue-and-search operation .

A beautiful day was breaking, and by about 6:30 a.m. May 18, the Grams brothers, Sellers, Haugen and a fifth friend, Jared Lohse, were on the water. Destination: Iron Lake, west of Crooked Lake and their connector: picturesque Curtain Falls. The group had spent the previous night camping on Nina Moose Lake after entering the BWCAW late in the afternoon at the Moose/Portage River north entry off the Echo Trail and northwest of Ely, Minn.

Good fishing was on the minds of the five friends. Erik and Reis Grams co-own Touchdown Tile in Blaine, where Sellers is employed. They've worked construction projects with Haugen and Lohse of Rock Solid Plumbing in Cambridge, Minn., which Haugen owned.

Reis, left, and Erik Grams with the bounty from a fishing trip.

The Grams brothers had made near-annual trips to the Curtain Falls area for the past 17 years. Erik had even proposed to his wife, Laura, at the spot. Haugen had made five or six trips with the Gramses, and safety was always a priority. If the wind was up, they steered clear of the pool on Crooked Lake above the falls.

The group reached their Iron Lake campsite about noon on the southeast corner of Three Island, west and south of the falls. They ate lunch. Then the Grams brothers prepared their fishing gear and set off ahead of their companions for the moving water below the falls. Reis caught a few walleyes before he and Erik portaged around the falls on the U.S. side onto Crooked Lake. Haugen and Sellers showed up soon after, while Lohse, 33, of Cambridge, decided to hang back at camp.

A light, favorable wind blew out of the west as the men fished. Erik Grams said they always kept a distance from the edge of the falls, and this day was no different. "We were constantly communicating."

At one point each of the brothers had on big walleyes, but worked together to safely control their canoe while landing the fish. Haugen and Sellers were catching walleyes, too, when the Grams brothers took a short break on shore. With plans of a walleye dinner soon back at camp, they went back on the water for a few last casts.

"Twenty seconds later, hell broke loose," Erik recalled.

The brothers were positioned about 40 to 50 feet from the falls. Haugen and Seller's canoe was closer — and then got too close and was parallel to the falls. Attempting to move away from the edge, Haugen and Seller's canoe began to tip and then suddenly flipped before landing upright. Holding onto the craft's gunwales, Sellers disappeared down the falls. Haugen, meanwhile, managed to right himself and, chest-deep in water, appeared to have perched on a rock in the current at the middle of the falls, outstretching an arm toward the Grams brothers.

Slowly, Erik and Reis Grams inched toward their friend, closing the distance to 2 to 3 feet. Erik suspected their tumble was next. "I thought, we are not going to be able to pull off this impossible save." In that instant, Haugen moved toward their canoe.

In seconds, they were all sucked into the falls. The canoe ruptured, and the next thing he knew, Erik was submerged in 10 feet of water and trying to swim to the surface.

"I have revisited this so many times," he added. "Was there something we could have done?"

Jesse Haugen had taken several fishing trips with the Grams brothers.

Grams has acknowledged none of the four was wearing life vests. "That's the one thing," he said.

The turbulence sucked Erik's running shoes from his feet. Struggling to stay afloat in the rapids, he grabbed hold of a flat rock on the Canadian side of the lower falls. His hip aching, he moved barefoot through brush down the shoreline for the next 15 minutes, yelling and searching for his buddies. He saw the stern of one canoe on an island and shouted. He heard a voice but didn't know who it was. He was prepared to make a 50-foot swim across the current when a solo paddler named Nick appeared as if from nowhere.

Erik climbed into the man's canoe, and they went to the island, where Sellers was wet, cold and suffering. Erik's own pain intensified — he learned later that he had multiple pelvic fractures. A friend of Nick's also appeared in a solo canoe. (Both men requested not to be fully identified and, through Erik, declined to comment.)

Using a satellite device, one of the good Samaritans reported the emergency, while they cared for the two injured paddlers. The St. Louis County Sheriff's office said it received the distress call at 7:20 p.m.

Meanwhile, below the rapids, Reis Grams and Haugen remained missing. The two rescuers were searching for the missing pair when Erik saw a return message on the satellite device screen. Could the paddlers make it out under their own power? He managed to type back: "Two missing."

A map of northern Minnesota shows the area that the four canoeists traveled from the Moose River entry point to the Boundary Waters up to Iron Lake and eventually to Curtain Falls.

When the St. Louis County Rescue Squad and its captain, Rick Slatten, had a sense of the predicament, they scrambled to get Grams and Sellers airlifted out. The two paddlers were on a small island about an acre in size and about a third of a mile west of the falls, on Iron Lake.

Around 10:30 p.m., Grams saw the lights of a rescue aircraft. By about 12:30 a.m. May 19, pilot Grace Zeller landed a Department of Natural Resources helicopter on the small island and plucked Sellers for transport to Ely, and later to a Duluth hospital. One of the rescuers hung back with Grams, and the DNR pilot returned for them around 2 a.m. Grams was taken to Ely for treatment, before being taken by ambulance May 20 for care in Duluth. Lohse was extracted, too.

Haugen's body was recovered May 31; Reis Grams' on June 2. Causes of their deaths are being determined.

The incident and the rescue and search that ensued spanned 17 days. Slatten and his squad were familiar with the area. Yet, he said, this mission posed unique challenges. At one point, the crew used chain saws and other cutting tools to clear a landing zone to accommodate a CH-47 Chinook state National Guard helicopter to bring in the squad's swift boat and other gear. Poor weather also delayed and challenged the rescuers, who worked at times in and around Class V rapids where the falls descend into Iron Lake.

Tethered to shore, a rescue squad member, right, searches at the base of Curtain Falls.

All told, 59 personnel were involved in the operation, whose cost hasn't been determined.

"This will rank among the top three rescue squad calls in terms of challenge and complexity," Slatten said.

Slatten said he and his team had to consider multiple possibilities while searching for Reis Grams and Haugen. The rescuers' focus was 1½ miles of water and shoreline. Searchers also got more details from Erik Grams to inform their strategy. The team used its swift boat — an inflatable-type vessel — drones, special remote-controlled mini-submarine devices, and even a K-9 unit.

Angie Grams said her husband, Reis, was where he was meant to be before their lives changed forever. Reis made his first trip to the BWCAW when he was 7 and more followed with his father, Bart, and other family members.

"He was instantly addicted," she recalled.

There were multiple trips most years. During their courtship, Angie got her first experience on the big water of Brule Lake. Now their boys, August, 10, and Teddy, 8, are veterans, too, and, she added, already determined to continue their dad's legacy by taking a planned trip in August.

The Lino Lakes family is always on the move, from outdoors endeavors to youth sports to family trips to state parks. Angie said they had visited 27, with a goal of visiting every one and of heading down along the Mississippi River later this summer. "We were always doing something," she said.

Reis and Angie Grams with their boys, August, 10, and Teddy, 8.

Perhaps Reis Grams' most meaningful trips were in a different direction, in service to low-income people in Mexican villages near Ensenada, south of Tijuana. There he and his family have helped build homes through Walk the Talk Missions. He and Angie made several trips since 2018, and the family was together there last October.

"In the 17 years I knew Reis, I only saw him cry when he talked about Mexico," she said. "It brought him so much joy."

The tragedy is especially painful because Reis Grams and Haugen had been friends since they were kids. A father and husband, Haugen was an Army veteran, an angler and hunter, and a BMX racer. He was known for his "profound integrity and his patriotic heart," according to his obituary.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to support the families of Reis Grams and Haugen.

After the tragic event May 18, Erik Grams received an arresting photo in a text from Nick, who came to his aid. Taken at 3 a.m., just after Grams was airlifted, the moon's glow radiates over Three Island and Iron Lake — a moment of transcendent beauty that belies the harrowing day. Grams has made several wall prints to share. He said the image has given him peace.

Like Angie Grams, he sounded undeterred about his commitment to a region that until May 18 had brought them so much joy. He plans to fix his shattered canoe and to stand in for his brother when Reis' family, including August and Teddy, takes their BWCAW trip in August.

"I feel like I am close to God in God's country," he said. "It's what we lived for, and we did it for that reason."
