Uhuras First Name: Why Star Trek Took 43 Years To Introduce Nyota

• Uhura's character on Star Trek: TOS broke barriers for women of color in television, despite lack of first name until 2009.
• The name Nyota, meaning freedom in Swahili, was adopted for Uhura before it was officially used on screen in 2009 by J.J. Abrams.
• Modern Star Trek adaptations have developed Uhura into a more complex and complete character with added depth and heroic qualities.

Nichelle Nichols' Lt. Uhura broke barriers on Star Trek: The Original Series , paving the way for women of color on television, but the iconic character did not officially receive a first name until 2009. As the Communications officer on the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Uhura was too often reduced to declaring that hailing frequencies were open. Still, she was a young Black woman on the bridge of a starship, which was a major breakthrough in the 1960s. While most of the characters on TOS received first and last names, Uhura was only ever Uhura.

Adopted from the Swahili word " Uhuru ," meaning freedom, Uhura is a beautiful name for a wonderful character. Although Uhura's first name, Nyota, was not used on screen until J.J. Abrams' Star Trek in 2009, the name had popped up in various non-canon sources since the 1980s. Despite this, none of the films following Star Trek: The Original Series mentioned Uhura's first name and Uhura did not play as large of a role in the films as she could have. This changed with Star Trek (2009), which marketed Zoe Saldaña's Uhura as the third lead alongside Chris Pine's James Kirk and Zachary Quinto's Spock.

Why Uhuras First Name Wasnt Introduced Until Star Trek 2009

Considering the military-like command structure on the Enterprise, it's not surprising that characters were most often referred to by their last times. There does not seem to be any particular reason why Uhura did not initially receive a first name , but it could have something to do with the nature of television in the 1960s. The characters and their backstories were not mapped out in a series bible the same way they are in many television productions today, and the characters of TOS were in a constant state of flux.

Like Uhura, Lt. Sulu (George Takei) did not have a first name throughout Star Trek: The Original Series. Star Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country officially established his name as Hikaru Sulu.

The name Nyota was first used by author William Rotsler in his 1982 licensed tie-in book, Star Trek II Biographies, and both Gene Roddenberry and Nichelle Nichols approved of the name. Meaning " star " in Swahili, the name Nyota was then used in various tie-in novels until its first official canon use in Star Trek (2009). Uhura's name actually became a running joke in the film, as James Kirk tried to figure out what it was before he eventually heard Spock call her Nyota. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds introduced Celia Rose Gooding's version of Nyota Uhura , officially adopting the name into Star Trek's Prime Universe.

Uhura Is A More Complete Character Now Than She Was In Star Trek: TOS

Building on the foundation laid by Nichelle Nichols, Zoe Saldaña, and Celia Rose Gooding have helped make Nyota Uhura a much more complex and fully realized character. In J.J. Abrams' three Star Trek films, Uhura gets to be an action hero and a romantic lead. Uhura's knack for languages, first hinted at in Star Trek: The Original Series, proves to be invaluable in the J.J. Abrams' trilogy, as she converses with both Romulans and Klingons. Uhura's controversial romance with Spock also plays a large role in the films.

In only two seasons, Uhura has already saved the Enterprise numerous times, and Celia Rose Gooding has brought new depth to the character.

When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds begins, Uhura is at the very beginning of her Starfleet career, serving as a cadet on the USS Enterprise of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). In only two seasons, Uhura has already saved the Enterprise numerous times, and Celia Rose Gooding has brought new depth to the character. In the Strange New Worlds musical episode, Gooding delivers a powerhouse musical number that establishes Uhura's role as the glue that holds the Enterprise crew together. Nyota Uhura remains one of Star Trek's most compelling characters, with a legacy stretching Star Trek: The Original Series to the present day.

At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, fans were treated with plenty of exciting information regarding the upcoming fourth season. One such piece of information, released alongside a neat Star Trek IV -inspired poster, is the official release date for Season 4. It was announced that Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 would launch on September 7, 2023 . This means there really is hardly any time to wait for fans to get their next fix of the lower-deckers.

Another wonderful surprise at the recent San Diego Comic-Con was the release of a trailer for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 . Alongside a special screening of the Strange New Worlds crossover episode , the trailer, packed full of Easter eggs, was shown and met with great appreciation from the fan base. That particular trailer can be seen in the player above and a new trailer for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 was released on August 31 as well, which teases a connection to another beloved Star Trek spinoff.

Just like many other Star Trek shows such as Voyager and Deep Space Nine , Star Trek: Lower Decks will continue to be featured on Paramount+ . The crew of the USS Cerritos will return to streaming on the service on the aforementioned release date, with fans also hoping for the same Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital release treatment that Season 3 has recently been given. While you wait for Season 4, you can now catch up on the first three seasons on Paramount+ as well.

We have a synopsis for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4, thanks to the official website , which reads as follows:

"In Season 4 of Star Trek Lower Decks, an unknown force is destroying starships and threatening galactic peace. Luckily, the crew of the USS Cerritos isn’t important enough for stuff like that! Instead, Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford, and provisional Ensign T’Lyn are keeping up with their Starfleet duties, avoiding malevolent computers and getting stuck in a couple of caves- all while encountering new and classic aliens along the way."

Already, fans will be delighted with this synopsis as, alongside an exciting new trailer, it suggests that there will be more of the same laugh-a-minute dialogue and wacky storylines from the writers. Given how successful the previous seasons of the show were, it was sensible to maintain the same tone and style for Season 4, but add in a dash of jeopardy in the form of the "unknown force", and a whole new main character, with Gabrielle Ruiz ( Orange is the New Black ) playing the Vulcan T'Lyn.

Luckily for fans, all the previous cast members who voice the now-beloved characters are returning to the sound booth. This includes the likes of Tawny Newsome ( Brockmire ) as Beckett Mariner, Jack Quaid ( Scream ) as Brad Boimler, Noël Wells ( Mr. Roosevelt ) as D’Vana Tendi, Eugene Cordero ( Loki ) as Sam Rutherford, Dawnn Lewis ( Dreamgirls ) as Carol Freeman, Jerry O’Connell ( Stand By Me ) as Jack Ransom, and Fred Tatasciore ( Team America: World Police ) as Shax. Of course, Lower Decks is also now famous for its guest stars and cameo appearances, with the likes of Armin Shimerman ( BioShock ) and James Cromwell ( The Green Mile ) appearing in Season 3. With that in mind, there is certainly hope that some more talented voices may drop by in Season 4, which only adds to the heaps of anticipation that currently surrounds the show. As mentioned, Season 4 will also be adding Gabrielle Ruiz to the main cast as the Vulcan T'Lyn.

The series writing credits of course go to show creator Mike McMahan, who is joined by many fellow writers including the likes of Garrick Bernard ( Single Drunk Female ) and Ben Rodgers ( Emily the Criminal ). Directing credits across the show go to Barry J. Kelly ( The Venture Bros. ) and others, with executive producer credits going to the likes of Aaron Baiers ( Salvation ), Heather Kadin ( Sleepy Hollow ), and Katie Krentz ( Steven Universe ). Of course, with a show of this nature, the appreciation behind the scenes would not be complete without a nod to the infinitely talented animation team, including the likes of art director Nollan Obena ( Ben 10 ) and color designer Angela Victoria Llerena ( Axe Cop ).

Paramount+ has officially announced that there will be a total of 10 episodes in the upcoming fourth season, the same amount as the previous three Seasons. With so much hilarious content to come, fans can hardly contain their excitement.

To the delight of fans, it was officially announced months ahead of Season 4 that a fifth season of the show had been greenlit by Paramount+ . Clearly, and rightly, Paramount has enormous faith in this animated brilliance, and it is the show's dedicated fans that are reaping the rewards.
