Itinerary to visit the South of India in 15 days

So, let’s dive right into it!

You will find a day-by-day itinerary including the highlights of each place in the first part of this post. I’ve also included a map and other useful information (how to get around, the best time to visit, etc.) in the second part.

Day 1: Chennai

Chennai, the perfect place so start a South India itinerary

Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu, and as it has an international airport, it’s the perfect introduction to this culture-rich state.

There are many things to do in Chennai , but some of the most popular ones are going temple hopping , spending time at the city’s beaches and seeing the colonial architecture .

🛕 Highlights of Chennai

  • San Thome Cathedral Basilica: This beautiful church was built by the Portuguese in 1523. It’s one of the three churches in the world that have been built on the tombs of one of the apostles (this one was built on Thomas the Apostle’s tomb).
  • Kapaleeshwarar Temple: Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this Hindu temple was built in the 7th century and later extended. It boasts some impressive architecture with many colourful details (that’s my favourite thing about Hindu temples).
  • Ripon Building: The beautiful Ripon Building was built in Indo-Saracenic architecture in 1913, and it’s the official seat of the Chennai Corporation. It’s good to know that you can’t visit this building on the inside, but it’s most famous for its chiming clock, which is wound every day.
  • Elliot’s Beach or Marina Beach: If you feel like relaxing, then heading to one of Chennai’s beaches is the perfect thing to do. While Marina Beach is the city’s most popular beach, Elliot’s Beach is a more quiet alternative.

🚍 Mahabalipuram , the next destination on this South India itinerary, is just 1 hour from Chennai, so you can either head here on day 1 or day 2 of this itinerary.

Day 2: Mahabalipuram

Mahabalipuram in India

Mahabalipuram was one of my favourite places to visit in the South of India! This place is home to a group of royal monuments dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries. You will find plenty of beautifully carved temples and rock-cut caves here.

There are three different sites to see in Mahabalipuram but make sure to start your visit at the famous Shore Temple as this is where you can buy entry tickets.

A unique sight at Mahabalipuram is Krishna’s Butterball (as pictured above). According to the story, they tried moving this gigantic boulder numerous times for safety reasons, but it didn’t work.

🚍 The next stop on this itinerary is Pondichery (Puducherry), which is a 2-hour drive from Mahabalipuram. You can head here on day 2 or day 3 .

Day 3, 4 & 5: Pondicherry and Auroville

Villa Krish in the French Quarter in Pondicherry, India

The charming town of Pondicherry is famous for its mustard-yellow colonial buildings, beautiful beaches and cosy restaurants.

From the 16th century onward, this city was ruled by Dutch, British and French colonists. Pondicherry was repeatedly fought over during the Anglo-French Wars. In 1815, however, when the British gained control over India, they allowed France to keep their settlements in this city.

Some of the best things to do in Pondicherry are to explore the city’s different quarters, head to the beach and visit the nearby township of Auroville .

🛕 Highlights of Pondicherry

  • French Quarter: Pondicherry’s French Quarter is also called “White Town” and it’s here that you will find the mustard-yellow colonial buildings Pondicherry is so famous for.
  • Tamil Quarter: This quarter is often called “Black Town”, and it’s located on the West side of the French Quarter, across the canal. You will find three parts here – the Hindu, the Muslim and the Christian part. This area is completely different from the French Quarter and it’s nice to soak up the atmosphere in this part of the city too.
  • Beaches: If you want to relax a little, it’s good to know that the French Quarter of Pondicherry is located right at the beach. This is the perfect place for a stroll on the beach promenade or to swim in the sea.
  • Auroville: This experimental township was founded in 1968 by Mira Alfassa, who is also called “The Mother”. It was based on the vision of the Indian philosopher Sri Aurobindo and its purpose is to realise human unity. I would suggest reading my post about Auroville if you want to know more about the place, though, as I will keep it short in this one.

🚍 On day 5 , it’s time to head to Thanjavur , which is about 5 hours from Pondicherry.

Day 6: Thanjavur

Brihadisvara Temple in Thanjavur in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu

With over a hundred Hindu temples, the small city of Thanjavur is often called “the temple city of India”, and it’s true that you will find a temple on every street corner here.

This city is also home to one of the most important UNESCO World Heritage sites in India, the famous Brihadisvara Temple , which is also called the “big temple”. But more about that below!

🛕 Highlights of Thanjavur:

  • Brihadisvara Temple: This is Thanjavur’s most famous tourist attraction and it’s easy to understand why. The magnificent Brihadisvara Temple was built in the 11th century by Chola emperor Rajaraja I and it’s one of the three Great Living Chola Temples . Its granite tower is one of the tallest in India.
  • Maratha Palace : This palace was built at the demand of the Thanjavur Nayak kings in the 15th century. It’s not as spectacular as the Brihadisvara Temple but it is worth visiting if you have more time in Thanjavur. You will find a beautiful Durbar Hall here among other things.

Another thing I loved doing in Thanjavur is simply wandering around the streets . There’s an incredible amount of Hindu temples here, more than in any other city I’ve been to in India (or any other country actually).

Day 7 & 8: Madurai

Temples are famous about India

🚍 The next destination on this itinerary for South India is Madurai , which is about 4 hours from Thanjavur. If you head here in the morning of day 7, you will still have some time left to explore Madurai (or rest) in the afternoon.

Madurai is the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu and this is one of the best cultural destinations in India . Among other things, you will find one of the most famous Indian landmarks in this city – the Meenakshi Temple .

One of the things I love the most about Madurai is how friendly and welcoming the people are in this city. They don’t (or hardly) speak English, but they still manage to welcome you with open arms.

🛕 Highlights of Madurai

  • Meenakshi Temple : This is one of India’s oldest and most important Hindu temples. It’s estimated that the first temple that stood on these grounds was built in the 1st century. The temple that you can see today, however, was rebuilt in the 16th century after the previous one was destroyed by Muslim invaders. The Meenakshi Temple is a very impressive structure with enormous gopurams (towers) containing stunning details.
  • Saint Mary’s Cathedral: Saint Mary’s Cathedral is a beautiful, gothic-style church that was initially built in 1841 but rebuilt in 1916. It’s also called The Church of Our Lady of Dolours, and it’s one of Tamil Nadu’s oldest churches.
  • Thirumalai Nayak Palace : Built by Tirumala Nayak in the 17th century, this palace was considered one of the wonders of the South during its heyday. Today, only the main palace is left, which is just a quarter of the original complex. It makes you wonder how huge the place must have been during the olden days.
  • Banana Market: Madurai’s banana market is another place I loved walking through. The merchants here sell over 16 varieties of bananas (I didn’t even know there were so many), including red ones (which I also didn’t know existed)!
  • Gandhi Memorial Museum: The Gandhi Memorial Museum is one of the seven Gandhi museums in India. This is the perfect place to head to if you would like to learn more about India’s most famous freedom fighter.

Day 9, 10 & 11: Munnar

Tea plantations in Munar in Kerala, South India

🚍 On day 9, it’s time to head to Munnar, which is the tea capital of Kerala . Munnar is a 4 to 5-hour drive from Madurai and this hill town is famous for its lush green tea plantations and beautiful greenery.

Many locals flock to this hill station during the boiling-hot Indian Summer and it’s also one of India’s most popular honeymoon destinations.

But apart from spending your honeymoon here, Munnar is also the perfect place to relax and enjoy nature for a while.

🛕 Highlights of Munnar

  • Tea plantations and tea factories: One of the most popular things to do in Munnar is to pay a visit to one of its many tea factories and tea plantations. Here, you can learn more about how tea is harvested, see tea plantation workers at work and taste some fine tea.
  • Echo Point & Top Station: Echo Point (a lake where you can make echoing sounds) is a nice stop on the way to Top Station, the highest point in Munnar. The latter is a 40 km (24 mi) drive from Munnar and you will be rewarded with magnificent views if you head here!
  • Eravikulam National Park : Apart from its beautiful landscapes, this national park is also famous for being the natural habitat of the Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered mountain goat. It’s also home to the Lakkom Waterfalls, which is easily accessible.

I have to admit that the downside of Munnar is that foreigners are not allowed to rent scooters here anymore, which makes it pretty difficult to visit things by yourself. However, there are plenty of tours or auto-rickshaws that can bring you around.

Day 12, 13 & 14: Backwaters of Alleppey

Backwaters of Alleppey in Kerala

The backwaters of Alleppey are full of lush greenery, beautiful palm trees and sparkling rivers. This place is on many traveller’s Indian travel bucket lists . As you cruise these waters, you will witness the everyday life of the farmers and fishermen along the canals.

Alleppey is also the perfect destination to go canoeing, drink coconut water and simply relax. It’s a peaceful destination that’s perfect for nature lovers.

If you have the budget, you can also rent your own private houseboat for the night. This will allow you to cruise the backwaters by yourself and spend the night there too. I didn’t do this myself, as it’s quite expensive and I was backpacking in India alone .

🚍 Head to Fort Kochi on day 14. This city is a 1.5-hour drive from Alleppey.

Day 15: Fort Kochi

Fort Kochi, South India

On the last day of this South India itinerary, it’s time to explore Fort Kochi (or Cochin). This was the first European township in India .

Fort Kochi is an area in the city of Kochi and, before India’s independence, it was first controlled by the Portuguese, then the Dutch and eventually the English.

This town is steeped in history and you will find plenty of colonial buildings, interesting museums and charming alleys here.

🛕 Highlights of Fort Kochi

  • Chinese fishing nets: The Chinese fishing nets (or Cheena vala) are one of Fort Kochi’s most famous tourist attractions. It’s said that Chinese explorer Zhang He introduced these nets to Kochi in the 14th or 15th century. Because of this, the nets stand as a symbol for the exchange of ideas that happened in the Indian subcontinent at that time.
  • St. Francis Church: This church was built in 1503 and it was the first Portuguese church in India. It’s inside this church that Portuguese explorer Vasco Di Gama (who died in Kochi) was originally buried, but his remains were later moved to Lisbon , Portugal.
  • Vasco da Gama Square: Its little restaurants make the Vasco da Gama Square a great place to spend the evening. Make sure to look up when you’re there, as this square is covered with beautiful raintrees.
  • Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica : This magnificent, Roman Catholic church was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Don’t forget to visit it inside too while you’re there, as it’s very nice!
  • Dutch Palace: The Dutch Palace (or Mattancherry Palace) was actually built by the Portuguese as a gift to the Kingdom of Cochin. However, when the Dutch took over, they renovated the palace, which is why it’s nicknamed “the Dutch Palace”. If you’re a history buff, then you will love this place! It exhibits many paintings, furniture, weapons, palanquins, Dutch maps and more.

And that was it! This was the last day of this itinerary for the South of India. Kochi is a nice place to end your journey in the South of India and it has an international airport.

Map and itinerary

You will find a useful map and day-by-day itinerary below.

Day 1: Chennai Day 2: Mahabalipuram Day 3, 4 & 5: Pondicherry & Auroville Day 6: Thanjavur Day 7 & 8: Madurai Day 9, 10 & 11: Munnar Day 12, 13 & 14: Backwaters of Alleppey Day 15: Fort Kochi

Fort Kochi in Kerala, South India

Best time to visit the South of India

The best time to visit southern India is during the Winter season, from October to March . This is when the weather is at its best.

I was in Kerala and Tamil Nadu in April and May (the Summer months) and I’ve honestly never been so hot in my life. I seriously underestimated the humidity in this part of the country and would not recommend heading there at this time of the year.

June to September is the monsoon season and it can rain quite a bit at this time of the year. When I was in Kochi (in April), there were floods each time it rained and I found myself walking with water up to my knees more than once.

How to get around in the South of India

You will find the best ways to get around below. This includes how to get from one city to another and how to get around in the cities.

How to get from one city to another

  • Bus: All of the places mentioned in this list can be reached by local bus. This is not the most comfortable way to travel but it’s absolutely doable if you’re on a budget!
  • Train: Not all of these destinations can be reached by train, but some can. You can take the train from Thanjavur to Madurai, for example.
  • Private car: The most comfortable (and fastest) way to get from one city to another is by taking a private car. This will be more expensive too, though.

I did everything by local bus and never booked anything in advance (which is necessary when you travel in the north of India). I just showed up at the bus station and asked around to find the right bus, and it worked fine.

How to get around in cities

  • Auto-rickshaw: You will find these everywhere. I would recommend using the Ola app , though. It works just like Uber and will save you some money. Rickshaw drivers charge foreigners 10 times the local price, but if you use Ola, you will get a fair price immediately and won’t need to haggle.
  • Bus : There are plenty of local buses in the cities. This is the cheapest way to get around, but it requires a bit more planning than the rickshaw.
  • Private car: Another way to get around the cities is by private car, but this will be more expensive.

Banana market in Madurai, a nice stop on a South India itinerary

South India itinerary: Final thoughts

I hope that this itinerary will help you plan your trip to the beautiful South of India. I really loved exploring this part of the county. The South is less touristy than the Golden Triangle and Rajasthan in the North, and there are so many beautiful things to see here!

Of course, this part of the country has got more to offer, it’s HUGE, after all! However, this itinerary offers a nice mix of culture, history and nature, which is a varied introduction if you have 15 days to spend here.

2 Week South India Itinerary! A Goa & Kerala Itinerary!

Categories Asia , India , Itinerary

Whether you’re visiting India for the first time and want to visit South India to ease yourself in, or you want a beach holiday on the beaches of Goa and you fancy seeing some of the lush green-ness of Kerala whilst you’re there, you can easily put together a 2 week South India itinerary and a Goa and Kerala itinerary !

Goa and Kerala are two separate states in India that run along the West Coast of India, and although they are only 2 of 29 states, they still cover a lot of space in this country so you should plan your itinerary for south India in advance to make sure you can see a lot in both places, and cover the distances to get from one place to another!

I’ll tell you the best places to visit in Goa and the best places to visit in Kerala in this India travel guide.

Based on my experience travelling around South India, I would recommend the perfect Goa itinerary and Kerala itinerary and the best place to travel for 2 weeks in South India as:

Agonda Beach (Goa) – Palolem Beach (Goa) – Kochi (Kerala) – Munnar (Kerala) – Alleppey (Kerala) – Varkala (Kerala)

If you want to see North India in 2 weeks too, check out my Northern India Itinerary here !

Best time to visit India

Before we get into this India travel blog, it’s worth thinking about the best time to visit India as the country get’s very hot and wet in the middle of the year. November to March are the best times to visit both North & South India.

South India will be warmer than North India in the winter months of December and January, Delhi and further North actually get cold in these months but are still enjoyable to visit with the right clothing.

Outside these months, you can still visit but you’ll find that the heat and humidity will be much higher, especially as you go further South.

I really recommend having a sim card in India as it makes travel in India so much easier! You may have heard that it’s hard to get a sim card in India but you can get a sim card in Delhi Airport, read this post to see how to buy a sim card in Delhi Airport or if you fly in elsewhere 3 ways to buy a sim card in India and you’ll be connected in just a few hours!

If you are a woman, here’s what I recommend you pack and wear in India . Technically you can wear what you like in India in most places but to get fewer stares and feel more comfortable, read my post!

Most people arrive for the first time into Delhi and get scammed within a few hours! Read my Delhi Travel Tips to help you enjoy Delhi, and the best places to stay in Delhi which is so important!

Map of South India Places to Visit

Best Time of Year to visit South India

Please keep in mind whilst planning your 2 Week South India Itinerary that you’ll want to visit South India including Goa & Kerala in the Winter Months like Nov-March .

This is the best period to visit Goa and Kerala because the weather will be dry and places will be open for tourism. In the summer months, especially in Goa tourism shuts because the monsoon rains come.

Day 1 – Land in Goa. Travel to Goa Beach

Goa International Airport is the main airport in India because Goa is such a popular place for people to go on holiday to India from abroad and for domestic Indian tourists.

There will be lots of taxi’s waiting outside the airport so you can take a taxi or pre-arrange transport to your first beach in Goa.

Goa has so many beaches and it really depends on what you want from a holiday in Goa on your 2 Week South India Itinerary. Do you want to party? Do you want to chill? Do you want activities? Here’s my blog post on the best beaches in Goa so you can work out which ones you want to visit, and here’s a post on the best shopping markets in Goa if you like Flea Markets.

For the purpose of this itinerary for India, I’m suggesting you visit Agonda Beach and Palolem Beach in Goa as they are both all-round beaches in Goa and close together meaning less travel time as you don’t want to spend all of your holidays in South India travelling between places!

Goa Airport to Agonda Beach is a 1 hour 45minute to 2 hour drive . If you land late, don’t worry as transport will be available all night.

Day 2 & 3 – Goa Beach Days

Spend the next 2 days on your 2 Week South India Itinerary enjoying the beach. If you decide to stay in Agonda Beach you’ll be treated to a long stretch of beachline with nothing to do apart from chilling.

However, if you want to go out on a boat trip you can, or a popular trip from Agonda beach and a place to visit in Goa is Cabo de Rama Fort which you give you a taste of the culture of Goa. Agonda beach is also good for beginner surfers .

Look for the best flights here!

I use Skyscanner to book all of my flights! I’m a huge fan of Skyscanner because I love how easy it is to compare different dates and routes to help me find the best flight at the best price!

Open Skyscanner by clicking here and search for the best flights as you read this post.

Day 4 – Move Beaches

In my opinion, to really experience Goa you need to visit at least 2 beaches in Goa on your Goa Kerala itinerary because each beach is so different. I really recommend spending some time at Palolem Beach , I think this is one of the  best places to visit in Goa because Palolem Beach is super chilled, it’s clean, quiet and has some great cafes!

Agonda Beach to Palolem Beach takes just 15 minutes in a car so I’d suggest leaving early in the morning so you can spend all day in Palolem Beach, and when you arrive at Palolem Beach, head for brunch or lunch at Zest Cafe in Palolem, it’s the best!

2 week south india itinerary, Palolem Beach with blue sky Goa

Day 5 – Goa Beach Day

Palolem Beach is another beach to chill at however for things to do in Palolem Beach I would recommend going out on a morning boat trip to see Dolphins . If you want to see another beach you can get a tuk-tuk to Patnem Beach which is just around the corner from Palolem Beach.

Here’s my full Guide to Palolem Beach with where to stay, things to do and where to eat!

2 week south india itinerary, Palolem Beach Goa

India is best travelled by train because its the quickest, cheapest and best way of getting to know the country. For an EASY option of booking trains in India use 12GO to search and book trains really easily. If you’ll be in India for awhile, you can use the local booking system, it’s a bit tricker but possible, here’s my post on how to book trains in India as a tourist .

I always use Booking.com to book my hotels in India and Hostelworld to book my hostels . India has a great range of accommodation with brilliant hostel chains like Moustache, Zostel and Backpacker Panda as well as homestays to luxury hotels.

Many cities in India are best seen with a guide , even if it’s just a half day tour on your first day . Cities in India are chaotic and complex and what better way to taste the food and get to know the city than with a local. I recommend Get Your Guide & Viator for the best tours in India!

Day 6 – Goa Beach Day. Overnight Train to Kochi

Today you have two options on this 2 week South India itinerary, you could get an overnight train from Goa to Kerala , this way you’ll get to spend a full day on the beach and travel overnight experiencing real, India travel. Or you could travel back to Goa Airport and fly from Goa to Kochi in Kerala which takes just 1 hour 20 minutes.

My suggestion would be the overnight train as the trains in India are the best way to see and experience the real India and meet the lovely people of India and it will give you more time on the beach in Goa.

You will need to prebook your train from to Kerala from Goa in advance. The nearest train station to Palolem Beach is Madgaon and the train station for Kochi is Ernakulam Jn. This is the train I recommend booking which you can book on 12Go Asia. I recommend booking 2AC which is Second Class with Air Con.

Book this train here!

2 week South India itinerary, Train Time from Goa to Kochi

Read how to book trains in India here!

Day 7 – Day in Kochi

Kochi, also known as Cochin, is a really interesting city in South India which is why I recommend it as part of your 2 week South India itinerary . It’s a port city full of colonial buildings, nice cafes and a small city feel, especially compared to big cities in India.

Fort Kochi / Fort Cochin is the best area to stay in Kochi because it’s where all of the Kochi tourist attractions are. You can easily spend one day in Kochi and things to do in Kochi include spotting the cool street art, visiting Jew Town, St Francis Church, the Folklore Museum and seeing the sunset on a boat trip.

Kochi isn’t that big so you’ll be able to see a lot during your late morning and afternoon in Kochi after arriving on the overnight train.

To help you once you’re on your 2 week India trip, why not take a Lonely Planet India Travel Guide with you.

2 week South India itinerary, Kochi City traffic

Day 8 – Travel to Munnar

If you associate Kerala with Tea Plantations then you need to visit Munnar in Kerala, and it’s one of the top things to do in Kerala!

You can get a public bus from Kochi to Munnar but from my experience, it’s quite a stressful experience as buses in India, especially South India, do not run on a regular schedule, you cannot book them in advance as they’re local buses, you often need to change buses and most of the time they are full and very squished.

If you want to get the bus from Kochi to Munnar, read my Munnar blog post for details on my experience. Your Kochi Hotel should also be able to help you as Munnar from Kochi is a popular route for tourists travelling South India.

Alternatively, especially with just 2 weeks in South India and 1 week in Kerala, I would recommend getting a taxi or hiring a private driver to save you time and make the experience less stressful.

The drive from Kochi to Munnar is 4 hours and this journey alone will give you a taste of why Kerala is called ‘Gods Own Country’.

I’d recommend staying at a homestay in Munnar so you’ll be in the countryside of Munnar as that’s the best way to experience it. Munnar Town isn’t that nice so try not to stay there.

I stayed at The Wayside Cottage in Munnar which I enjoyed and it has brilliant reviews from other travellers. Gruenberg Tea Plantation is another Munnar Homestay I’d recommend.

2 week South India itinerary, The Wayside Cottage Munnar Room

Day 9 – Munnar Day Trip

A trip to Munnar is all about seeing the tea plantations, hiking and seeing some wild elephants if you’re lucky!

It’s very likely that your accommodation in Munnar will be able to help you plan your day in Munnar so don’t worry about planning and booking this in advance too much.

To see what I got up to on my day trip in Munnar, read My Day hiking in the Tea Plantations of Munnar.

2 week South India itinerary, Munnar Tea Plantations

Explore the Serene Beauty of Munnar with Private Day Trip – Book Now!

Day 10 – Travel to Alleppey

From Munnar, you need to travel back to the coast to Alleppey as Alleppey, or Alappuzha, as it’s also known. This is the home of the backwaters of Kerala so it’s a must-visit place in Kerala on your 2 week South India itinerary!

The drive from Munnar to Alleppey is about 5 hours and again I’d recommend hiring a driver or getting a taxi for this journey as it will take a long time trying to do it by public bus.

There’s really not that much to do in Alleppey so you can spend the day travelling. Here you have 2 options, if you’ve always fancied staying on a houseboat on the backwaters of Kerala and waking up on the water, you can book this for tonight so as soon as you get to Alleppey you can get on the boat, or you can stay near Alleppey Beach and do a boat trip the next day.

Book this tour and enjoy a Relaxing Canoe Cruise through Alleppey Backwaters!

2 week South India itinerary, backwaters of kerala

Day 11 – Backwaters of Kerala. Travel to Varkala

If you’re like me, this is probably what you have always associated with Kerala, South India and even India itself! In fact, I wanted to see the backwaters of Kerala so much I saved it for Christmas Day and it did not disappoint!

There are different boat trips of the Kerala Backwaters, you can Kayak, Canoe, take a Houseboat or a Shikara Boat which is what I suggest. Read my full blog post about  Cruising the Backwaters of Kerala from Alleppey   to see all of the boat options and where I suggest you stay in Alleppey and some places to eat!

The boat tours of the backwaters of Kerala only last a few hours and generally leave in the morning, and seeing as there is nothing else to do in Alleppey I’d recommend leaving Alleppey that afternoon/evening and heading further down the coast to Varkala.

You can get the train from Alleppey to Varkala. You can book this in advance read this post on how to book trains in India (I can’t find the train on 12GO Asia so you’ll need to book it on the official Indian train booking system). However, if you don’t mind sitting in a lower local class train you could turn up and book the train on the day .

2 week South India itinerary, Kerala backwaters

Day 12 & 13 – Days in Varkala

Varkala in Kerala is the perfect place to spend your last few days in India and in Kerala in on your 2 week South India itinerary. Varkala has 2 sides, it has a local town but by the beach, it’s a tourist heaven. Home to Yoga and Ayurveda , good waves for surfers, lots of nice cafes, temples and a few beaches , Varkala is the perfect mix of a local and tourist beach.

Here’s my full guide to Varkala for things to do in Varkala, where to stay and where to eat.

2 week South India itinerary, Varkala Cliff view

I’ve spent many months travelling India in the last few years visiting over 50 places around the country, here are my recommended itinerary posts for India to help you plan your trip!

Day 14 – Fly to Trivandrum. Fly from Goa.

If you’re staying in India for just 2 weeks it will probably be cheaper to book return flights from Goa , therefore in order to catch your flight from Goa you can get an internal flight from Trivandrum to Goa.  Or you could book a flight out of Bangalore and fly from Trivandrum to Bangalore and then catch your flight home.

Overview of the 2 Week South India itinerary!

To help with booking accommodation, based on the above 2 Week South India itinerary, this is where you’ll spend your 2 weeks in South India:

  • Goa Beach 1 – 3 Nights
  • Goa Beach 2 – 2 Nights
  • Overnight Train
  • Kochi – 2 Nights
  • Munnar – 2 Nights
  • Alleppey – 1 Night
  • Varkala – 3 Nights

India travel itinerary: top places to go in South India

Best Places To Visit In South India If You Have Two Weeks

Adventure Travel , India , Travel | January 7, 2020

This post contains affiliate links, which means I may make a small commission if you buy anything mentioned here. It doesn't cost you anything extra.

My fiancé and I recently spent two incredible weeks travelling in India’s beautiful South. It was the best adventure we’ve been on together to date so I wanted to share our complete itinerary for two weeks in South India.

We went to some of the top places to visit in South India starting with five nights in Kerala.

Next, we flew from Kerala to Goa and explored both the North and South. We finished our two weeks in India on a high in crazy Mumbai.

Despite doing very little planning, we both felt like we’d packed in a perfect mix of slow and fast paced destinations.

Neither of us would have changed anything about our trip.

We decided to focus our first trip to India on the south of the country mainly because we’d heard that’s where the best food is, I won’t lie.

Happily, the local fare more than lived up to our expectations – and I’m happy to report that not a hint of Delhi Belly occurred (perhaps because Delhi is in the North?)!

We had a loose travel itinerary for our South India tour but no real plans beyond our Globe Travel Centre tour of Kerala.

Planning a trip to India can be overwhelming because the country is so vast and diverse so I hope this guide to some of the best tourist places and holiday destinations in South India is helpful!

The Kerala portion of this itinerary was arranged and paid for by Globe Travel Centre and Xandari Resorts, who kindly hosted us during our time in Kerala.

Where to go in South India in two weeks

Watch my full India travel video on Youtube

Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive guide to South India – we barely scratched the surface of its spicy landscape in the two weeks we had and even two years in South India wouldn’t be enough to call yourself an expert.

But this is our exact, tried-and-tested itinerary which combines a little bit of everything South India is famous for.

I did a lot of research to make sure we spent time in places that allowed us to absorb local culture, kick back on the beach and experience buzzing Indian city life.

A good trip is all about balance for me!

Day 1: Cochin, Kerala

Best places to visit in South India: Cochin

We flew into Cochin International Airport and met our driver and guide from Globe Travel Centre at Arrivals. We were driven directly to Xandari Harbour , which was an excellent base.

Cochin (also known as Kochi) is a great place to start your first trip to India. We felt like it eased us slowly into the whole India experience, if that makes sense!

Cultural attractions in Kochi

The port city is the largest city in the state of Kerala and a good place to learn about India’s colonial past.

Interestingly, the caste system in Kerala isn’t as enforced as it is elsewhere in India and education is compulsory for all there.

Places to see in Kochi

A local female guide from Globe Travel Centre showed us around the city, starting with the Chinese fishing nets that are still used today in the harbour.

We also visited various religious buildings and did a spot of shopping in Jew Town, which I loved.

One day in Cochin is enough to see its main highlights and it’s definitely worth stopping there if you fly into Cochin to explore Kerala.

Best tours and activities in Cochin

Two week itinerary for South India: Kerala Backwaters

The main attraction in Kerala for tourists is the backwaters, a network of palm-fringed lagoons and lakes that sprawl inland from Cochin to Quilon.

As part of our Kerala Globe Travel Centre tour, we headed to Lake Vembanad to spend an incredible night onboard one of Xandari Riverscapes ‘ luxurious converted rice barges.

We had the houseboat to ourselves. It had a large bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, plus a roof terrace.

Kerala backwaters houseboats

Typically people book a minimum of two nights on the houseboat and enjoy delicious meals cooked onboard by a private chef, while learning about the local area from your guide.

This was an incredible experience and it’s the number one reason people visit Kerala, so you can’t miss it!

Days 4, 5 & 6: marari, kerala.

Best tourist spots in South India: Marari Beach

When we reluctantly got off the houseboat back in Kottayam we climbed back into the car that had been arranged for us by Globe Travel Centre and were driven the short distance to Xandari Pearl in Mararikulam.

This tranquil luxury beach resort is THE place to relax and unwind. It’s perfect for couples and is super environmentally conscious, which delighted us.

Luxury beach resort in Kerala: Xandari Pearl

We slept in one of the 27 villas and absolutely loved having our own private plunge pool and an outdoor shower.

The food served at the resort was to die for and for our entire two night stay, it felt like we were walking on air. Pure bliss!

If you’re looking for a laid-back place to stay in Kerala with your partner, I can’t recommend Xandari Pearl enough.

Days 7, 8 & 9: calungate, north goa.

South India itinerary for backpackers: North Goa beaches

As our first week in India drew to a close, we were dropped off back at Cochin airport and that was the end of our fantastic Globe Travel Centre tour of Kerala.

From there, we flew to Goa and got a taxi from the airport to Hotel Goan Heritage in Calungate .

It was perfectly located at the south end of Calungate near quieter Candolim, and a 20 minute walk along the waterfront to rowdier Baga Beach.

What are North Goa's beaches like?

We went to North Goa for nightlife, and it certainly delivered!

We spent every night with our feet in the sand, and went to the infamous Titos Lane in Baga Beach for a big night on one occasion.

North Goa is fun but if you don’t have much time to spend in Goa, I’d recommend heading south, which we did next.

Tours and activities in Goa

Search for accommodation in calungate, days 10, 11 & 12: palolem, south goa.

South India's best tourist places: Palolem

Around three hours from Calungate by taxi, Palolem is a little slice of paradise in South Goa.

It’s an absolute must-visit in Goa and one of the best places to visit in South India if you like picture-perfect beaches.

Best beaches in South Goa

It’s a popular South India holiday destination among independent travellers but tour companies haven’t really moved in yet, so Palolem has dodged over-tourism and there are no concrete buildings or gaudy hotel developments.

We truly felt like we’d stumbled upon a hidden gem.

Beach huts in Palolem, South Goa

We stayed in beach huts at O3 Beach Resort . The entire beach is lined with similar accommodation options. They all serve great food too!

Trying to decide between North or South Goa? I’ve compared the two in a separate blog post.

Search for accommodation in Palolem

Days 13 & 14: mumbai.

Where to go in South India

We spent 24 hours in Mumbai to end our South India trip on a high.

The flight from Goa to Mumbai, in India’s southwest, was easy and our local friend picked us up at the airport, then kindly showed us around.

One full day in Mumbai should be enough to see the city’s main highlights.

We managed to cram a lot in but traffic can be nuts so it’s best to use a combination of local driver and local trains (outside of peak times to avoid the crowds, of course) to get around.

Mumbai trains

We weren’t sure if we would enjoy Mumbai and while one full day was enough for me, I’m really glad we decided to end our trip in this heaving city.

Tips for two weeks in South India

Travelling to South India

We flew from Manchester to Cochi via Qatar with Qatar Airways. If you’re doing this India itinerary in reverse, you can fly to Mumbai from London direct.

My best money-saving tip for flights is to search for your preferred dates on Skyscanner and compare prices and flight durations on different airlines.

Make sure you apply for a visa online more than 72 hours before check-in opens for your flight! This is the official Indian e-visa website (don’t get caught out with scams).

Be warned that it’s a lengthy process so you’ll need to set aside around 45 minutes to complete your application.

Anyone who watches my Instagram Story will have seen the trouble we had with visas thanks to Tom’s lax attitude to travel plans…

How to get around South India

Getting around Mumbai by train

We didn’t have a super strict budget so we skipped the long train and bus journeys in favour of flights between Kerala and Goa, and Goa and Mumbai. When you’re short on time, it’s easier this way.

I’d heard a lot about how easy it is to get scammed when it comes to taxis in India but we did our research beforehand or asked a local barman or hotel worker what we should expect to pay. People are helpful!

When getting taxis from airports, we simply looked for the pre-paid taxi desks and paid the fixed price.

We’re eternally grateful for having the help of Globe Travel Centre for Kerala. It was our first trip to India so it was reassuring to have a personal guided tour planned for us.

We were picked up at the airport when we arrived in Cochi, accompanied by a guide for the bits when a local person came in useful, and had the same driver throughout our time in Kerala.

Travel insurance and vaccinations

We were a bit naughty and didn’t get vaccinations, but we have had jabs a few years ago so we hope they protected us. Obviously, you should do as I say and not as I do!

Always check whether you’ll need any vaccinations for South India before you go.

I was worried about malaria but we only visited low-risk areas so there was nothing to be nervous about.

It’s best to stay away from animals like dogs and monkeys in India because of the risk of rabies.

One great thing I learned in Mumbai was that a lot of the dogs on the street have clipped ears to indicate they have been treated for rabies. It made me feel safer because I’m nervous around dogs at the best of times!

Health insurance is essential for India trips. World Nomads have an excellent reputation among travellers. You can use the box below to get a quote.

Useful travel guides for your trip to South India

I was sent the Rough Guide to South India & Kerala for my trip and found it insanely useful for finding essential information about the best places to visit in South India.

There’s so much great information online but this book really filters out all the confusing bits and breaks each destination down into easily digestible chunks.

Hey, I had visited Goa recently and spent most of the time in North Goa side and especially at Mandrem. I hope when you come next time in Goa, you should definitely explore some quaint beaches and off beat places. Dudhsagsr falls is also present there. It was my first time there. I hope you enjoyed in India 😊.

What are some of the most popular South Indian foods?

Get ready to take your tastebuds on a mouthwatering adventure. South Indian cuisine includes a combination of food from each state: Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Telangana. Dishes are largely vegetarian but seafood is also popular, particularly in Kerala. Many dishes are made with coconut oil and cream and a combination of spices including curry leaves, mustard seeds, tamarind, asafoetida, fenugreek seeds and chillies.

Some of the most popular foods to try include:

  • Idli: A savoury rice cake typically eaten for breakfast. It's made by steaming a batter made with fermented black lentils and rice.

What are the toilets like in India?

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in India. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap or hand sanitiser, as they're usually not provided. Flushable, Western-style toilets can be found in up-market restaurants, some higher-end hotels and in some tourist areas.

Can I drink the tap water in India?

India is notorious among travellers for sickness. We don't recommend ever drinking tap water, and travellers should avoid drinks with ice and foods that haven’t been cooked or peeled. This means salad is also off the menu, but with so many delicious South Indian dishes on offer this shouldn't be an issue!

"Rarely is a trip absolutely perfect, especially a trip for three couples traveling together. But from the beginning of the planning process, to the final fine tuning, to the day-to-day plans and World Travel Experiences have done a commendable job and have exceeded all of our expectations. Using this travel company was like having a close friend helping with the trip. We had wanted a trip that reduced the uncertainties of travel, but also left a lot of time for our own explorations. The itinerary included an introductory tour guide at every new location and then time to explore on our own. It included wonderful peaceful hotels, and houseboats. The food served was divine. Every aspect of the trip was a perfect fit for what we had hoped to do and how we had hoped to travel. The costs were very reasonable and fully transparent. We are already planning our next trip with WTX."

"What made the tour "excellent" was the group and our guide, Thilip Vijay. This was my 5th Intrepid tour, and as typically the only American, I wish more would do it, especially in this day & age of nationalism, border walls, etc. I have to admit that India can be challenging and often depressing, due to the poverty and trash, but it's worth it. There were some very long rides, and the overnight train isn't my "cup of chai", but we certainly saw all of the highlights, even including a tiger, although I would have loved to have included Hampi on the itinerary. A few suggestions: Don't buy much, if anything, at the various shopping stops, since you can find everything much cheaper elsewhere; Use "WhatsApp" to communicate amongst the group and share photos; Invest in a SteriPen to sterilize the tap water and minimize plastic bottle usage (although I appreciated that most of the lodgings provided potable water). Our guide, Thilip, was very knowledgeable and attentive, even taking me to the doctor once and providing a movie & music for our long van rides. I also highly recommend using both Intrepid and Tour Radar, as the latter saved me a considerable amount and were very responsive. (I was a travel agent for over 30 years, so I know of what I speak. :-)"

South India Revealed Tour

"I give the tour guide an excellent review but the tour itself was only okay. We spent two days in places where we should have spent one day. Madurai, Thekkady, and Mysore were those places. We should have spent full two days and two nights in Hampi because there is so much to do. Some of the hotels were pretty bad and didn't have redeeming qualities. The hotel in Varkala was dirty but it was close to the beach. The one in Hampi was dirty but had the cool seating area and hammock things, so that was nice. The hotel in Mysore was disgusting, filthy, and had zero redeeming qualities. Overall, I thought the pacing was a bit off, so realistically I wouldn't recommend the tour to my best friends. I'd also like to say that I don't think my expectations were too high. I'm a seasoned backpacker and traveler in both the developed and undeveloped world, and I live in Pakistan. So it's not like this was my first time visiting a developing country."

Kerala: Beaches & Backwaters Tour

Kerala: Beaches & Backwaters

"What I was looking for: - do more cultural activities than when travelling solo (I usually do none) - stay with a chill group of people for a week - see Kerala that I heard so much about My experience: - this tour has limited activities. It’s in the itinerary. I booked the only one that matches my dates without checking too much… - the group was pretty cool. The restaurants / bars we were recommended were bad though. - I got to see Kerala. The walk through the rice fields was amazing Overall, I’d say go for it if you’re not comfortable travelling on your own. The 2 days in the backwaters were worth going on a tour. The beach is better done solo travelling / resort / hostel."

5 Recommended places to visit in South India

South India is filled with amazing destinations — some popular and touristy, some very off-the-beaten-path and local. If you are venturing into South India for the first time, we recommend the following 5 places to start off your journey.

1. Karnataka

Hampi is a must visit when on a trip to India

A beautiful collision between urban hip, exquisite ancient ruins, quaint villages, and emerald landscape, Karnataka is a hidden gem that many tourists overlook in favour of its popular neighbours but really should not. Home to a myriad of attractions, Karnataka is the place to be for explorers. Spot tigers in Bandipur National Park, take a step back in time at Hampi, marvel at the impressive royal palaces in Mysore and get inspired along the winding trails of spice and coffee plantations in Coorg. This is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in South India.

2. Tamil Nadu

Madurai in India

Whether you are in need of a relaxing holiday or a mystical one, Tamil Nadu is the go-to-destination in South India. Featuring stunning coastlines, lush hill stations, cultural abundance and some of the finest stonework, there is no lack of activities to indulge in — from hikes to cultural exploration or water activities. Journey through the well-kept gardens, ancient temples and villages that make up the southern state and immerse yourself in the dance, language and poetry of its people.

3. Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Andaman Nicobar Islands are less known but beautiful destinations in Asia

Floating on the Bay of Bengal, around 966 km away from India’s mainland, is Andaman and its neighbour, Nicobar. The two are peaks of a mountain range that runs from Myanmar to Indonesia, which once stood tall and is now submerged in water. Known for its rare biodiversity and home to six indigenous tribes, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are famous for their distinct flavour and make a perfect Indian escape. Boasting serene blue waters, white sand beaches and emerald green jungles, the islands sets the desired milieu for a relaxing getaway.

4. Lakshadweep

A cluster of 36 white-sand-beached, palm-lined islands makes Lakshadweep a rewarding destination in South India. Situated on the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep flaunts unspoiled coral reefs and underwater lagoons that are a big attraction amongst scuba divers and snorkelers. If you are aching for beautiful waters, isolation, and an island experience like none other, the hidden gem of Lakshadweep is the place to be.

5. Kerala

Kochi is one of the must-visit places in Kerala

The narrow coastal strip of Kerala in South India is your escape from the boisterous madness of the rest of India. Boasting a network of glistening backwaters, a stretch of beaches lined with palm trees, and green hill stations covered with tea and spice plantations, Kerala is a different world in its own. Allow yourself to strip away from the bustling city life and dive deep into the villages of Kerala to experience a slower way of life. Top it all off with a boat ride through the shaded backwaters of Cochin , Karasagod, and Kollam.

7-day South India Itinerary

If a pre-designed tour to South India is not your cup of coffee, you can always create your own itinerary with places you want to visit and activities that scream at you the most. Here is an example of a customized itinerary to help you plan your own.

Day 1: Start at Chennai Start in Chennai, the capital of South India. Known for its diverse neighborhoods and urban villages, Chennai is the heart of South India’s artistic, religious and culinary communities. Walk through the museums and temples that give Chennai its beautiful history. Spend your morning at St. Thomas Church or Fort St. George and make your way to the Government Museum and Art Gallery. Spare your afternoon to exploring the hipster cafes, styling boutiques and end off at one of the many bars in the city. Spend the night at one the luxe hotels at the heart of the city,

Day 2: Explore Kanchiparum and Mahabalipurum

Mahabalipuram on South India Tour

Start early and take the short hour-and-a-half train trip to Kanchipuram, also known as the “Golden City of a Thousand Temples”. Enjoy the morning exploring the many temples that encompass the city, namely Kamakshi Amman, Kailashnath, Vaikuntha and Ekambareswarar. When the temples get overwhelming, try puttu , a rice dish layered with coconut and served with luscious spicy curry. In the afternoon visit the silk market and learn about the fabrics that make up saris and perhaps try wearing one too. Take one home for souvenir sake! Head back to Chennai to stay the night.

Day 3: Chennai to Madurai Board an early hour-long flight to Madurai, India’s version of Athens. One of the oldest cities in India, Madurai’s many attractions include the world famous Meenakshi Amman Temple. Marvel at the intricately carved, colourful structure in the morning and pay respects to the deity that is believed to reside there. Spend the rest of the day exploring the medieval remnants in the city. Be sure to check out the Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace and learn more about Gandhi at the local Gandhi Museum. Before calling it a night, visit the Meenakshi temple again in the evening to witness a larger-than-life Aarti ceremony — a special ritual that involves lighting oil lamps to illuminate the entire temple premise.

Day 4: Madurai to Periyar National Park

Periyar National Park in Kerala is a must-visit

Prepare for a 3-hour long road trip to Periyar National Park. An elephant and tiger reserve, Periyar National Park is popular amongst tourists. Spread over 777 square kilometres, the reserve is also home to wild boars, sambars, bison, and several species of birds. Spend most of the morning and afternoon journeying through its rolling hills to spot all the wildlife to your heart’s content. Then, in the evening, spend some time visiting the spice plantations around. Grab some cinnamon and cardamom to take home. If you’ve booked accommodation in a hotel inside the park, stay the night there. If not, there are plenty of nice spots outside the park as well for the night.

Day 5: Periyar to Kumarakom

Alleppey in Kerala Backwaters

Embark on a four-hour long train journey to Kumarakom. Located in the region of Kerala this vintage town is famed for its calm demeanour and quieter waters compared to its sister Alleppey. Made of a cluster of small islands on the Vembanad Lake, Kumarakom is also known for its 14-acre bird sanctuary. Spend the morning exploring the sanctuary of migratory birds such as the famous Siberian Stork, heron and local species such as the waterfowl. But the best part of a trip to Kumarakom is definitely a houseboat tour of its enchanting backwaters. Grab dinner at a local eatery before you retire for the night.

Day 6: Kumarakom to Cochin An hour and a half’s drive away from Kumarakom, Cochin is known for its diverse mix of heritage. A medieval melting pot, Cochin flaunts its influences from Chinese, Dutch, and Portuguese culture with Islamic undertones. Spend the morning immersed in the multi-cultural communities and local architecture. For lunch, indulge in local dishes where fresh seafood plays the main hero. Head down to the many beautiful beaches that surround the port city. Be sure to make a stop to Cherai Beach. Dip your feet into the shallow waters and clean sand, with rolling rocks and knolls that overlook the waves.

Day 7: End in Goa

Palolem beach in Goa

End your trip on a two-hour flight to Goa from Cochin, a place known for its uninterrupted golden beaches that stretch along the Arabian coastline. Find hidden coves, crabs, palm trees and markets along the many beaches of Goa . Unwind at Cavelossim beach to enjoy the end of the trip or take a scooter around Old Goa, soaking in the history of the region that once served as the capital of Portuguese India. Spend your afternoon eating away at the many stalls that line the main street, perusing through flea markets until your feet are done. End your night exploring an old school Goa party and the birthplace of psychedelic trance. Make sure you try the Goan fish curry, a local specialty made of your preferred seafood and coconut and red chilli sauce.

Good to know

  • While beef is sacred meat in India and not easily available, Kerala is one of two states that is licensed to serve beef. So, make sure to get your share when you’re there.
  • Only go swimming off the beaches from November to May. Times outside of those months can see currents rise up and it may become dangerous to dive in.
  • The best time to visit South India is during winter (December to February) when the weather is not scorching hot.
  • Pack a lot of breathable, cotton clothes, as South India is hot and humid even on its best days.
  • Take at least one item of local clothing with you, or buy something on arrival. Some temples in South India won’t allow you in if you are not wearing traditional clothes.

A trip to South India — from lush green hills to sandy coastlines, enchanting backwaters, architectural marvels and historic grandeurs — will be an unforgettable experience.
