Theater Review: THE LION KING (National Tour)

Post image for Theater Review: THE LION KING (National Tour)

by Tony Frankel on February 2, 2024

in Theater-International , Theater-Regional , Tours

IT DOESN’T MATTER WHETHER IT’S THE KING OF MUSICALS OR NOT; IT’S THE KING OF EXPERIENCES

Endearing heroes and villains. Shakespeare and ancient myth. Coherent storytelling. Anthropomorphic jungle animals. Gorgeous African chanting. Transfixing puppet pageantry on a pythonic, prodigious level. A celebration of theatrical ingenuity. Forty-nine cast members –six of whom are South African. Over 700 lighting instruments. Actresses with the grace of gazelles. Actors with pecs the size of boulders. There are reasons why Disney’s The Lion King — the tour of which opened last night at Segerstrom Hall — keeps packing them in.

scar lion king tour

And then there’s that opening: Giraffes appear as performers manipulate stilts on all fours. A life-size cheetah prowls as its puppeteer moves its limbs. A herd of gazelles glide across the stage as dancers twirl wooden replicas on their arms and heads. An elephant and a rhinoceros stroll up the theatre aisles. Birds soar over the heads of guests from long extended wires. All of this in front of a deep red/orange sky ( Donald Holder , lights) and the rising sun ( Richard Hudson , sets). Within the first fifteen minutes of this show, we are transported to a magical African savannah. In fact, it is the greatest opening in musical theater history, and the main reason we overlook the musical’s shortcomings.

scar lion king tour

Important themes of family devotion and the ecological balance in nature are forefront in Irene Mecchi and Roger Allers ‘ book. It speaks, of course, about the “Circle of Life”, the idea that we don’t die but merely take an eternal place among all creatures. The story is a tragedy about a lion cub losing his father and having to make a decision about growing up and taking on his responsibilities as the king. Simba (an enchanting Mason Lawson ) wants to become the king like his magisterial kind-hearted father Mufasa (a resonant Gerald Ramsey ), who is later murdered by his uncle Scar ( Peter Hargrave ) and Scar’s henchman hyenas. When Scar, who wants to be king himself, blames the cub for the death of his dad, Simba runs away, only to be raised by his new buddies, meerkat Timon ( Nick Cordileone ) and warthog Pumbaa ( John E. Brady ), who teach him to forget about the past. When the now-grown Simba ( Darian Sanders ) reunites with his betrothed, Nala ( Khalifa White ; Jaxyn Damasco is young Nala), the lioness can’t talk sense into him, even as they feel the love tonight. Simba meets the same crazy shaman baboon ( Mukelisiwe Goba as Rafiki) who hoisted him in the air when he was born, coaxing Simba to return home by manifesting his father’s ghost in the sky.

It’s Hamlet meets Bambi meets Kimba the White Lion .

scar lion king tour

At 26 years old, The Lion King has been seen by more than 110 million people and played every continent but Antarctica (give it time — it may be grassland soon). The musical has placed in the top five grossing Broadway shows nearly every week of its run — over 1,300 weeks and counting. Currently, 90,000 people see the show every week (it’s been touring for 20 years). There have been 29 productions seen by 115 million people. The worldwide gross of The Lion King  musical exceeds that of any film, Broadway show, or other entertainment title in box-office history. So it surprises that it has significantly less emotional weight than the 1994 film.

scar lion king tour

While the current tour, which fits the Segerstrom stage magnificently, is less lavish than earlier versions, it’s still the breathtaking designs that steal the show. It’s a triumph of presentation over the material. The thanks goes to director, costume designer, and mask co-designer (with Michael Curry ), Julie Taymor , the first woman to win a Tony for Best Director of a Musical, who to this day remains actively involved in the show, launching new productions and maintaining the flagship Broadway production. It’s nigh impossible to recreate the Broadway staging (the demise of Mufasa doesn’t really kill like it should), but it’s astounding for a tour.

scar lion king tour

Taymor’s   extensive and brilliant wardrobe changes seem to require each ensemble member to wear a dozen different outfits. The unique costumes include beautiful colorful tunics and pantaloons which adorn villagers. Grass is represented by turf headdresses and wicker skirts and later with single blades on nude leotards. Whether it’s that simulated wildebeest stampede or a pack of sassy hyenas, Taymor’s whimsical direction and vibrant designs suspend belief. With the aid of Michael Ward ‘s hair and makeup, Taymor blurs the lines between real and imagined, puppet and animal.

scar lion king tour

The score features Elton John and Tim Rice ’s songs from  The Lion King animated film, along with three new songs by the pair — although the best new song, “Morning Report”, was cut years ago, along with some other nips and tweaks to reduce the running time. More striking than the songs (iconic for a generation, only a few hold up) are the augmentations and original numbers by Lebo M , Mark Mancina ,  Jay Rifkin, Taymor, and Hans Zimmer, who wrote the film score. As usual with a touring production, the orchestra, diligently handled by Karl Shymanovitz , can overpower the actors — you will lose some lyrics. At one point, I couldn’t tell if performers were singing in English, Sotho, Zulu, Tswana, Xhosa, or Swahili (where the phrase “Hakuna Matata” comes from). I suppose that even though you may not understand the words, you sense them.

scar lion king tour

As with Phantom of the Opera , which closed this year on Broadway, brilliant staging overcomes all odds. With a fairly weak score, Lion King may not be the king of musicals, but given the fluid ensemble dancers executing Garth Fagan ‘s choreography, the dramatic heft of the performances, and the stunning visuals, it is the king of experiences.

Scar

Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… in   Pride Rock neglected by his parents. Scar was born to always be second-best to his brother Mufasa, the alpha male and heir to the throne. Scar would always just be the brother of the king, and he harbored great resentment, even from a young age. Scar admits that “when it comes to brute strength... I'm afraid I'm at the shallow end of the gene pool.”

Living … plotting against his brother, Mufasa. Scar has decided that the best way to get to Mufasa is through his son and heir, Simba – whom Scar refers to as a little “hairball.” Scar tricks the young lion into disobeying his father’s orders not to go to the Elephant’s Graveyard. Scar seems to have malicious plans in mind.

Profession… prince of the Pride Lands. Scar has no real responsibilities, and spends most of his time hatching plans to become more important. He constantly fights with Zazu, Mufasa’s trusted advisor. Scar’s bitterness about his rank among the pride makes him an easy target for ridicule.

Interests…  hanging out with hyenas. Scar has seduced the laughing hyenas into becoming his posse. Scar controls them like minions to do his evil bidding, and threatens the other lions whenever he needs to exert his force.

Relationship Status… single. His lack of a mate might be why he has so much time on his hands, and possibly is also the root of some of his anger.

Challenge… ascending to the throne. Scar seems to be planning a complex coup. Stealing the throne for himself is only the beginning of his plot for domination. He plans to rule with an iron fist, and collect all the food for himself and his “elite” compatriots, especially the hyenas.

Personality… intelligent and conniving . He also has a large ego and sense of entitlement, as shown when he sings about himself: “ meticulous planning, tenacity spanning decades of denial, is simply why I'll be King undisputed, respected, saluted and seen for the wonder I am!” What, you’ve never seen a singing lion? You’re probably on Mufasa’s side, too. Scar doesn’t need any of you!

Review: Disney’s eye-popping ‘Lion King’ tour, now in San Diego, offers both spectacle and intimacy

"The Circle of Life" scene in the North American touring production of "The Lion King."

Three-week engagement marks national tour’s fourth visit to San Diego

As touring musicals go, “The Lion King”’ is the biggest show on the road, by far.

So as expected, its three-week tour stop that opened Wednesday night at the San Diego Civic Theatre delivers all of the eye-popping spectacle of the Broadway production. But having now seen the musical four times at the Civic since 2005, what I noticed most at Thursday night’s performance was this tour’s unexpected subtlety.

The musical is still visually astonishing, with its 49-member cast, onstage drummers, hundreds of imaginative African-style puppets, masks, kite and costume designs, elaborate scenery and famed “Circle of Life” animal parade opening number. But director Julie Taymor has matched the musical’s grandness of scale with many understated performances that give the story a more human, rather than cartoonish, feel.

Based on the 1994 Disney animated film about a lion cub’s coming of age, the 26-year-old “Lion King” musical brings an authentic African touch to the story, with a mostly BIPOC cast and lines and lyrics featuring words from five Indigenous African languages.

Perhaps the most surprising performance in the touring production is given by Gerald Ramsey, who plays Mufasa, the king of an African pride of lions. When he is killed by his avaricious brother, Scar, Mufasa’s young cub Simba is forced to flee into the jungle, where he matures into adulthood and ultimate returns to reclaim the crown. Ramsey played the same role in the musical’s 2016 visit to the Civic, and he stood out then, too. But this time, his Mufasa speaks and sings with such a gentle and nuanced voice that you feel the palpable love he has for his son and his recognition that they’ll be separated by death one day.

A scene from the North American touring production of "The Lion King," which arrives in San Diego on Aug. 24, 2022.

That restraint is also employed by Spencer Plachy as Scar, who’s more dark and calculating than sneeringly evil. The role of young Simba is played at alternating performances by Jaylen Lyndon Hunter and Jordan Pendleton. On Thursday, Hunter showed surprising poise, charisma and vocal power in the role. Adult Simba is played by Darian Sanders, who moves with lionlike grace and has a strong singing voice. As the adult Nala, Simba’s future mate, Kayla Cyphers gets one of the show’s best numbers, “Shadowland,” but it was too subtle on Thursday. Her microphone volume was so low it was hard to hear some of her lyrics.

South African actor Gugwana Diamini is very funny as the eccentric Rafiki, Mufasa’s shaman baboon. And the comic characters who were clearly the favorites of the younger members of the audience on Thursday, the meerkat Timon and warthog Pumbaa, were played with the appropriate broadness by Tony Freeman and John E. Brady. Jürgen Hooper also impressively multitasks as actor and puppeteer playing Zazu, the hornbill bird who is Mafa’s chief of staff.

Elton John and Tim Rice’s Oscar-winning 1994 film score was supplemented with several new songs for the stage, and some of these additions are weak, particularly the overlong song and dance numbers involving the hyenas, the goose-stepping acolytes of Scar. Nonetheless, the show is a surefire crowd-pleaser that offers a solid bang for the buck and, in this tour visit, some unexpectedly good dramatic acting.

North West joins cast of Disney's 'The Lion King' live concert

scar lion king tour

North West just can't wait to take the stage at the Hollywood Bowl.

Kim Kardashian and Ye 's daughter, 10, has joined the cast of an upcoming " Lion King " concert event at the Hollywood Bowl, Disney announced on Wednesday. This will be West's debut at the Los Angeles venue.

In honor of the 30th anniversary of the 1994 animated movie , "Disney's The Lion King 30th Anniversary – A Live-to-Film Concert Event" will feature live performances of the film's songs from cast members of the 1994 original, 2019 remake and Broadway musical.

The lineup includes Billy Eichner, the voice of Timon in the remake, as well as Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane, Ernie Sabella and Jason Weaver, who in the original movie voiced Scar, Timon, Pumbaa and young Simba, respectively.

The concert will also feature Bradley Gibson, Heather Headley, Lebo M and Jennifer Hudson , with a full orchestra set to perform the movie's iconic Hans Zimmer score, conducted by Sarah Hicks. The show will make use of the Broadway musical's "costumes, set design and innovative puppetry," Disney said.

North West opens up about upcoming debut album: Everything you need to know

The "Lion King" concert is scheduled for May 24 and May 25, and it will be filmed for a Disney+ special set to debut at a later date. The event follows Disney's similar "Encanto" concert held at the Hollywood Bowl, which was later made available to stream on Disney+ in 2022 and nominated for four Emmys.

North West sings and raps in dad Ye's new video with Ty Dolla $ign

In March, North West spoke with Jazzy's World TV at the Rolling Loud festival and teased her upcoming debut album, which she revealed will be titled "Elementary School Dropout," a reference to her dad Ye's album "The College Dropout." A release date for the album hasn't been announced. In 2023, West lent her voice to the animated film "PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie."

The concert also comes as Disney prepares to extend the "Lion King" franchise in December with "Mufasa: The Lion King," which serves as a prequel and sequel to the 2019 remake. Donald Glover , Seth Rogen , Billy Eichner and Beyoncé are returning from the previous film, and Beyoncé's daughter Blue Ivy Carter is also set for a voice role .

After performing with her mom onstage during the Renaissance tour, Blue Ivy Carter will join Beyoncé on the big screen.

The mother-daughter duo both voice characters in the upcoming prequel to 2019 live-action hit “The Lion King.” “Mufasa: The Lion King,” directed by Barry Jenkins and hitting theaters in December, tells the story of Mufasa’s life and his childhood with brother Scar.

Carter will voice Simba and Nala’s daughter, Kiara, while Beyoncé will reprise her role as Nala and Donald Glover will return as Simba. Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen are also back as Timon and Pumbaa.

Blue Ivy Carter wins first Grammy Award, for Beyoncé’s ‘Brown Skin Girl’ video

The 9-year-old daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z won the Grammy for best video, along with her mom.

March 14, 2021

While the film marks Carter’s first acting gig in a movie, the 12-year-old already has an impressive résumé. In addition to dancing backup on her mother‘s record-smashing Renaissance world tour, she is a Grammy winner thanks to her feature in Beyoncé’s “Brown Skin Girl” music video, which took home the music video trophy at the 2021 Grammys. Although she won that award at age 9, Carter has been setting records and making headlines since birth. Two days after she was born in 2012, her father, Jay-Z, released the song “Glory,” which featured her cries and coos. Since she was individually credited on the track, she became (and remains) the youngest person to appear on a Billboard chart.

Beyoncé also recently enlisted the help of her younger daughter, Rumi, as she recorded her new album, “Cowboy Carter.” The track “Protector,” a touching tribute to her children and motherhood, starts with Beyoncé’s 6-year-old asking her to sing a lullaby.

The “Mufasa” teaser trailer , which Disney debuted on Monday morning, does not reveal whether audiences can expect to hear Carter sing, but given Beyoncé’s musical contributions to the 2019 film, it is likely that her daughter will follow suit.

Review: Disney’s photo-real ‘The Lion King’ remake sings a new yet familiar tune

Given its reliance on spanking new, mind-bending visual technology, it would be tempting to say that Disney’s latest classic remake is not your father’s “Lion King.”

July 11, 2019

While the original 1994 animated film and the 2019 live-action remake featured familiar tunes composed by Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice, along with one original song by Beyoncé, the prequel will include new music by “Hamilton” mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda has become a frequent Disney collaborator, working on the music for “Moana,” “Encanto” and the 2023 live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid.”

Jenkins, the filmmaker behind the Oscar-winning “Moonlight” and “If Beale Street Could Talk,” said Carter and Beyoncé did not have to pretend too much during the voice acting process and that it was “really special” to watch them work together.

“Beyoncé is this larger-than-life figure, but when she’s working with her daughter, when she’s in the room with her daughter, she’s a mom first,” he said Monday on “Good Morning America” after dropping the trailer. “So much of that energy bled into the film.”

Courtesy photo Members of the Juniata Elementary School Drama Club preparing for “The Lion King, Jr.” include (from left): Darren Focht (Simba), Delilah Laich (Nala), Carly Elder (Rafiki), Jayden Champeno (Scar) and Elias Lopez (Mufasa).

The Juniata Elementary School Drama Club under the direction of Drama Club Advisors Heidi Soldner and Kathy Otto will present “The Lion King, Jr.” at 7 p.m. May 14, 16, 17 in the Juniata Elementary gymnasium.

“The Lion King, Jr.” tells the story of the epic adventures of a curious cub named Simba as he struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and his destiny as king.

Along the way, the young lion encounters a colorful cast of characters including spunky lioness Nala, charismatic meerkat Timon and loveable warthog Pumbaa.

To claim his rightful place on the throne and save his beloved Pride Lands, Simba must find his inner strength and confront his wicked Uncle Scar.

“The Lion King, Jr.” features classic songs from the 1994 film such as “Hakuna Matata” and the Academy Award-winning “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” as well as additional songs penned for the Broadway production.

The show involves close to 45 fourth- and fifth-grade students. The drama club, begun by teachers Otto and Soldner, with an AASD Foundation grant, has been in operation for the past 14 years at the school, and has given many young students an introduction to theater arts, with many going on to perform in the junior and senior high drama clubs, and even in college.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students under 12 and can be purchased at the door.

Blue Ivy Carter to make film debut alongside Beyoncé in Mufasa: The Lion King

Beyoncé ’s daughter Blue Ivy Carter is making her film debut in Mufasa: The Lion King , Disney ’s forthcoming prequel to 2019’s Lion King reboot.

Blue Ivy, 12, will voice Kiara , the lion cub daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala, voiced by Donald Glover and Beyoncé in the 2019 movie.

Her casting was revealed in the film’s first trailer, released on Monday (29 April). “Introducing Blue Ivy Carter with Beyoncé Knowles,” the end credits read.

Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr will portray the younger versions of Mufasa and Scar, respectively. Mufasa was voiced by James Earl Jones in both the 1994 animated classic and the 2019 remake.

John Kani, Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner are among the returning cast members, Mads Mikkelsen and Thandiwe Newton are set to join.

Directed by Barry Jenkins ( Moonlight ) with music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mufasa will tell the origin story of King Mufasa, Simba’s father, who was killed by his younger brother Scar.

Jenkins takes over from Jon Favreau, who directed the 2019 Lion King .

Speaking about Blue Ivy’s casting in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly , Jenkins said: “A buddy of mine, Matthew Cherry, made the short film called Hair Love that Blue Ivy did the audio book of.

“Starting this project and just having that in the ether, I was like, ‘Is it worth a shot? Would Blue Ivy want to do it? Would Beyoncé want to act opposite her daughter? Is it too close to home?’ But once we put the question to them, they both responded with enthusiasm.”

He added: “What’s crazy is we made the film, and then the Renaissance tour happened, and I think Blue really grew up over the course of that tour,” he said. “So the Blue Ivy you see in this film, it’s like a time capsule, this very, very, very young stage of her life, and she got to share it with her mom. So, I thought there was some synergy. It could be beautiful.”

Last year, Blue Ivy joined Beyoncé for a number of shows on her record-breaking Renaissance tour. She performed as a featured dancer during the song “My Power” from Beyoncé’s 2019 album The Lion King: The Gift.

Blue Ivy is the eldest daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z . The couple, who have been married since 2008, also share six-year-old twins Rumi and Sir.

Mufasa: The Lion King will premiere in cinemas on 20 December.
