The London Scholars Program

northeastern london campus tour

Welcome to the London Scholars Program

The Northeastern University London Scholars program offers first-year students a rigorous academic environment and required residential experience in one of the most culturally vibrant cities in the world. Northeastern University London’s unique global position will allow you and your peers to amplify your university experience by living, studying, and growing in London during your first year of college. London will be your gateway to Europe; Northeastern will be your gateway to the world.

Students will spend their first year in London before transitioning to Northeastern’s Boston campus for the remainder of their U.S. Bachelor’s degree. Students who choose to enter as Northeastern University London Scholars will take courses that align with Northeastern’s first-year curriculum. In addition to fulfilling major requirements, London Scholars courses count toward NUpath, Northeastern’s general education requirement.

London Scholars Location

Northeastern University London is situated in Devon House at St Katharine Docks, a vibrant and dynamic quarter in central London. Located just a short walk from some of the UK’s most recognizable and iconic sites, including the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, St Katharine Docks is steeped in the history of London and the River Thames upon which the city was founded.

Program Academics

Courses taken with the London Scholars Program align with the first-year freshman curriculum taught at Northeastern and integrate cultural learning opportunities. In addition to fulfilling major requirements, London Scholars courses also count toward NUpath , our institution-wide general education requirements for students in all majors.

As a student at Northeastern University London, you can take courses across the Northeastern academic colleges, earning a full academic year’s worth of credit. You may be able to select alternate courses if you receive advanced credits from AP, IB, or other international examinations. Please note that not all first-year courses at Northeastern will be offered at your location. Because all degree plans are unique, please keep in mind that your individual plan may be different than other Northeastern students and that a four-year graduation is not guaranteed.

Students will make their initial course selections in early June. Students will have the opportunity to meet with an academic advisor to review course registration and confirm fall classes in June and July. You will receive your actual class schedule when you arrive on location. If you have or anticipate having a passing score on an Advanced Placement (AP) exam, International Baccalaureate (IB) credit, or other college-level transferable courses, you must report this during the London Scholars registration process, both in your Application Status Check and when you meet with an academic advisor.

A full year at Northeastern University London presents a unique academic environment. For students admitted to London Scholars Scholars for fall 2024, please refer to the London Scholars webinar slides regarding the differing expectations in preparation for your full year at NU London.

London Scholars Program Curriculum: Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 Curriculum .

*The curriculum linked here is reflective of a representative curriculum. All courses are subject to change.

Global Inquiry

Global Inquiry courses are designed to provide students with deep, contextual learning experiences that are directly applicable to their major fields of study. These courses combine rigorous academic content with immersive, place-based learning and an emphasis on global perspectives.

Key elements of Global Inquiry courses include:

  • Local cultural engagement
  • Comparative and global perspectives
  • Addressing topics of global significance
  • Multi- and interdisciplinary approaches

Global Inquiry courses are deeply integrated with each student’s academic pathway, ensuring they complement major requirements and NUpath courses without necessitating additional coursework. This approach not only enhances the educational journey but also ensures that every student engages with critical global issues as part of their degree program. Students are required to take at least one Global Inquiry-designated course while in the London Scholars program, though many will likely enroll in multiple due to the courses’ alignment with their academic trajectories.

Courses that carry the Global Inquiry attribute are noted in the online London Scholars curriculum linked above. Please note: If you have advanced credit for one of the listed Global Inquiry courses, you will need to take an additional Global Inquiry course: this requirement must be fulfilled during your London Scholars program.

General Requirement for Co-ops:

Complete two full-time fall/spring semesters as a matriculated student, or successfully complete the Global Scholars or London Scholars program, and be enrolled in a degree-seeking program according to the student’s assigned pattern of attendance. Some programs may require completion of additional semesters to be eligible for co-op.

International students must attend one academic year as a matriculated student, or its equivalent, and obtain proper authorization from the Office of Global Services before engaging in co-op.

June & July

Review your course selections with your Northeastern University London academic advisor and confirm your fall courses. You should discuss any AP, IB, or other transfer credits you have or anticipate.

Summer advising for London Scholars fall semester closes. Your courses are finalized and confirmed with Northeastern University London. No course changes can be made until you arrive on site.

August & September

Program launches, and classes begin. Course changes during Northeastern University London’s add/drop period are possible. However, while you can request a change, you are strongly discouraged from doing so. Your courses were carefully reviewed and confirmed with your academic advisor over the summer. Any changes once you arrive on-site may impact your academic progress. Please also keep in mind that requests are not guaranteed. Factors such as capacity, timetabling, and add/drop deadlines may not allow for a change to be made.

October & November

You will have the opportunity to consult with academic advising and plan for spring courses. You can expect to complete spring course selection at this time.

Visas: If you require an F-1 visa to study in the U.S., you will need to apply for an I-20 that allows you to begin your studies in the Summer. More information about Summer Enrollment expectations can be found here: https://international.northeastern.edu/ogs/current-students/understanding-visa-requirements/summer-term/

For more information, please refer to the 2024 Summer Course Information Document here .

If you require services and accommodations during the academic year because of a disability, please contact the Disability Access Services (formerly known as the Disability Resource Center). You can find all resources and contact information for the DAS for London Scholars students here .

All students are required to obtain a UK Student Visa to participate in the London Scholars program before traveling to the UK. UK and Irish citizens are exempt from this process.

You will need to obtain a Confirmation of Acceptance for Study (CAS) from Northeastern University London prior to making your online visa application. Additional information regarding the visa process and any documents required from you will be communicated as early as possible. Please note that such information is intended as informational guidance only and does not constitute legal advice.

Further information regarding UK Student Visas will be made available to incoming students in the spring before their program start date.

Q: Can I travel during weekends and/or school breaks in the UK or other countries?

A: Students who are participating in the London Scholars program are able to undertake tourist activities outside of class time. It is very important that students ensure their intended travel does not impact their studies. If a student wishes to travel outside of the UK, it is their responsibility to gain the necessary visas to enter the country that they are traveling to. Northeastern University London is not able to provide advice to students regarding visas for other countries. Many countries have visa information on their governmental websites, and it is important that students access this information to understand the visa requirements for their destination country prior to traveling.

Q: Can I travel to other European countries post-program?

A: Once students have completed their program in London, they are free to travel to other countries in Europe. Students need to ensure that they have the correct visas to enter the European countries that they are traveling to. It is a student’s responsibility to obtain a visa(s) and adhere to the visa rules and requirements prior to and while traveling in European countries. Students should check visa requirements on the countries’ governmental websites or the Schengen Visa website if they are only traveling to EU countries that belong to the Schengen Area.

Group Flight Travelers

The London Scholars Program offers a group flight option for students to travel with their peers to and from their London Scholars location at the beginning and end of the program.

On arrival at their London Scholars Program location, students on the group flight will be guided and transported to the student residence. At the end of the program, students on the group flight will be guided from their student residence to their location’s airport.

More Group Flight information, including reservation forms and itineraries, once available will be provided through your Application Status Check .

Fall 2024 Group Flight

Group flight registration for the 2024 London Scholars program (Fall 2024 – Spring 2025: from August/September to May) has been completed. All group flight registrants have been notified by our travel agency- Advantage Travel.

As a group flight participant, you will not receive a group flight credit to your student account during Fall 2024 semester.

If you have flight or travel itinerary questions, please call Advantage Travel at +1.315.471.2222 or email our Advantage Travel Representative at [email protected] .

Baggage Allowance

Please review the guidelines on the airline website for more specific details on the baggage allowance of the group flight airline. It is your responsibility to confirm the luggage policies of your airline(s).

Travel Information Form

To ensure the safety of all participants, all students must provide London Scholars with the details of their itinerary, whether they are flying on the group flight or independently.

Independent Travelers

If you do not take the group flight option, you are responsible for your travel arrangements to and from their London Scholars Program location at the beginning and end of the program.

Group Flight Credit

Students who do not take any segment of the group flight will receive a flight credit. This credit will be posted to the student’s fall bill and will be equal to the cost of one group flight airline ticket. If a student flies any segment of the group flight, they will not receive a credit. London Scholars students traveling separately must arrange their own transportation to their student residence and arrive on-location on the program start date (early check in will not be available).

Travel Insurance

You are encouraged to research whether you would like additional insurance that covers the costs of trip interruption or cancellation, as well as loss of baggage and personal effects either while traveling or living in residence halls.

Safety Resources while in London Scholars

All Northeastern University students, faculty, and staff requiring medical, security, and travel assistance abroad can obtain assistance through the Northeastern Travel Support Network. Please contact the 24/7 international assistance hotline +1.857.214.5332 (international collect calls are accepted) to access support services provided by our partners, the Collinson Group and Crisis24, a GardaWorld company. They will also notify the International Safety Office of your call to provide an added layer of support.

Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)

U.S. citizens can register their travel plans with the U.S. Embassy through the  State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.  We strongly encourage you to register, as this is a free service that will allow the U.S. State Department to better assist citizens abroad in the event of an emergency.

Additional Resources

For more resources, visit the  U.S. State Department , which provides information on safety for travelers abroad, including tips on handling money, traveling on public transportation, and safety in a hotel.

All London Scholars students will need a passport. If you do not already have a passport, you should apply for one as soon as possible. Please plan accordingly for passport processing times.

The program is required to make advance financial commitments to travel agents, vendors, and the partner institution to secure items such as housing, classroom space, and co-curricular activities. Therefore, should you withdraw from the program at any time after May 1, you will be responsible for the terms provided within the Payment and Withdrawal Policy. You are encouraged to plan carefully and are required to review this policy as soon as possible. In this policy, you will see information on payment terms, schedule of charges, and withdrawal conditions and processes. You can read more about this policy here: 2024-2025 London Scholars Payment and Withdrawal Policy .

We know that keeping in touch with family and friends back home can be challenging during your time away. Students have found it helpful to set up a schedule for calling home, as having a set time can make time differences much easier to handle. You and your family might also consider a variety of technologies to keep in touch. For example, the instant messaging service WhatsApp also allows voice and video chat, and the voice-over-IP (VOIP) programs Skype, Zoom, and FaceTime use an Internet connection to talk for free.

Email communications from Northeastern University and the London Scholars Program will be sent to students via their Northeastern email addresses, which are created as soon as you activate your myNortheastern portal. Parents will receive some communications, but students are encouraged to initiate their own inquiries and problem-solve independently.

For safety reasons and for ease of communication, London Scholars students are required to have a working cell phone for use on-location during their time in the London Scholars Program. Phones must be acquired and working (calls, texting, and data required) within a week of arriving on location. You should research the mobile phone options available to you prior to arriving. You typically have a chance to learn more about phone plans and purchase a phone during on-location orientation.

Upon successful completion of the London Scholars Program , you and your peers will enroll at Northeastern’s Boston campus to continue your studies in your second year. You will be invited to attend orientation and receive ongoing support as you transition into academic and social life in Boston. Your experiences with the London Scholars Program will allow you to apply a unique global perspective in the classroom and beyond.

We are pleased to be able to offer students who complete the 2024-2025 London Scholars Program the opportunity to apply for university housing during their second year when they arrive in Boston, provided they meet the required application and deposit deadlines. Interested students will have the opportunity to declare their intention to reside in university housing during the Spring ’25 term. This opportunity does not represent a mandatory requirement, as students can still decide to live in off-campus housing in the local area if they choose. Please note that university housing for all students—including students completing the London Scholars Program —can take the form of traditional campus residence halls, leased apartments, or leased hotel spaces in the area around campus. We will provide more information about specific housing options for London Scholars later in the 2024-2025 academic year.

For more information, please refer to the Summer and Fall Transition slides from the accompanying webinar hosted in April 2024.

All NU London Scholars participants earn a full semester of academic credits in their fall and spring semesters, provided that they achieve a grade of “D-” or better in the U.S. grading system. Your London Scholars program courses and letter grades will appear on your Northeastern University transcript and will be included in your Northeastern GPA. You can download an unofficial transcript through your Northeastern student portal, and you can request official copies of your transcript from Northeastern’s Registrar .

It’s all fun and games as Northeastern students kick off Welcome Week with campus celebration

A group of people paint together outside on a sunny day.

Convocation and Fall Fest are Tuesday. Classes start on Wednesday.

But on Monday — the Labor Day holiday in the U.S. — Northeastern University students on the Boston campus took one last opportunity to pick up supplies, meet up with friends, and enjoy the spectacular late-summer weather.

“All my friends are here — it’s nice to be able to see them again,” said Ellery Nistler, a second-year student who was waiting to meet up with classmates outside West Village on Monday morning.

Graduate student Yucheng Liu, meanwhile, was settling into life in Boston after having moved from China just last week.

“The weather is cooler than at home, and I’m trying to get used to the food,” Liu said, laughing.

He was also trying to get used to navigating campus after getting his Husky Card.

“The university is quite a bit larger than my (undergraduate) college campus,” Liu said.

White rubber bracelets with black text: "Welcome Week 2024".

With residence halls mostly filled up — and those living off campus settled into their apartments — students awoke to a beautiful sunny day on Monday with Boston buzzing with activity.

On Tuesday, President Joseph E. Aoun will address students on the Boston campus during an 11 a.m. ceremony at Matthews Arena.

In London, Ken Henderson, the chancellor and senior vice president for learning, will welcome students at 11:30 a.m. BST. And in Oakland, David Madigan, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, will do the same at 7:30 p.m. PDT.

Monday, however, was all about fun and games — literally.

Everyone had been looking forward to the start of Welcome Week .

On Krentzman Quad, piles of Jenga blocks lay on the grass, beanbags thumped against cornhole boards, big Connect 4 games were in position and a DJ spun tunes and reminded students to pick up wristbands for the day’s activities.

Those included everything from beach volleyball, to the Northeastern DIY Arts and Games Festival, to a movie night in Blackman Auditorium followed by an LED-lit dance party on Centennial Common.

“Welcome to Northeastern!” the DJ announced.

Meanwhile, about 30 sweaty and tired students ran onto the quad after finishing the morning’s 5k running tour of Boston.

First-year student Yasemin Coutts said that she had only recently arrived from New Jersey and was looking forward to joining a running group as a social activity.

“I’m looking forward to meeting new people,” said Coutts, a business student, as she caught her breath.

People paint a red paw print on a multi-colored canvas.

Over on Centennial Common, Poorvi Mohanakrishnan carried a few final items from home that her mother Sujatha had delivered — items that could not be found during that other rite of passage during move-in … the roommates’ trip to Target.

“We tried to figure out the best time and decided on 5:30 p.m. thinking everyone was at dinner,” Mohanakrishnan said.

They thought wrong.

“There was a crazy line spiraling and doubling back throughout the store, and people kept coming up and looking in our carts and asking where we got things,” Mohanakrishnan continued. “But we ran into a bunch of friends — it was good to see everyone there.”

About 2 p.m. the lawn games migrated to Centennial for the DIY arts festival, along with many students game to test their crafting prowess.

“I’m not exactly sure what I’m doing, I think it’s a giant mosaic,” said first-year student Katie McDonnell, as she painted a panel for a mural adorned with a Husky paw print.

McDonnell praised the university for planning events throughout Welcome Week, saying she was looking forward particularly to Tuesday’s Fall Fest. She and her friends had also explored Boston a little — stopping at Boston Common, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Boston Public Library.

“Stuff has been ramping up this week, which I’m really excited about,” McDonnell said. “I’m really excited for Fall Fest and the rest of Welcome Week.” Across the path, Rayan Rahim sought a slogan to paint onto a small, white rock as part of a “make a rock, take a rock” activity.

“I’m trying to think of something clever,” Rahim, also a first-year student, said. “The best I’ve heard is “you rock” — but I don’t want to copy it.” He eventually settled on “You’re Awesome.” “The welcome events are super helpful to meet people,” Rahim said.

Leah Kleitsch was participating in her first Welcome Week event — tie-dying shirts — after just moving into her residence hall on Monday morning.

She said she was excited to start the school year, and was particularly looking forward to hockey season.

“It’s fun to watch and everyone gets really into it,” Kleitsch said.

And first-year student Beau Knisley beaded a necklace as he similarly praised the Welcome Week events.

“It’s been a great experience to meet new people,” Knisley said. “It seems like it will soon feel like home.”

Shooter kills 4 at a Georgia high school and a suspect is in custody, officials say

  • ASSOCIATED PRESS, WANF

Authorities say one suspect is in custody after a shooting at a Georgia high school Wednesday left four people dead and at least nine injured.

WINDER, Ga. — A 14-year-old student opened fire at a Georgia high school and killed four people on Wednesday, authorities said, sending students scrambling for shelter in their classrooms — and eventually to the football stadium — as officers swarmed the campus and parents raced to find out if their children were safe.

The dead were identified as two students and two teachers, and at least nine other people were taken to hospitals with injuries.

The suspect, a student at Apalachee High School in Winder, about an hour’s drive from Atlanta, was taken into custody, authorities said, and was being charged as an adult with murder.

“What you see behind us is an evil thing,” Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said at a brief news conference outside the school. He declined to give details about the suspect. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said four people were dead and at least nine injured.

The school shooting was just the latest among dozens across the U.S. in recent years, including especially deadly ones in Newtown, Connecticut, Parkland, Florida, and Uvalde, Texas. The classroom killings have set off fervent debates about gun control and frayed the nerves of parents whose children are growing up accustomed to active shooter drills in classrooms. But they have done little to move the needle on national gun laws.

Jacob King, a sophomore football player, said he had dozed off in his world history class after a morning practice when he heard about 10 gunshots.

King said he didn’t believe the shooting was real until he heard an officer yelling at someone to put down their gun. King said when his class was led out, he saw officers shielding what appeared to be an injured student.

Before Wednesday’s shooting, there had been 29 mass killings in the U.S. so far this year, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University. At least 127 people have died in those killings, which are defined as incidents in which four or more people die within a 24-hour period, not including the killer — the same definition used by the FBI.

Last year ended with 217 deaths from 42 mass killings in the U.S., making 2023 one of the deadliest years on record in the country.

Ashley Enoh was at home Wednesday morning when she got a text from her brother, who’s a senior at Apalachee High:

“Just so you know, I love you," he texted her.

Sophomore Kaylee Abner was in geometry class when she heard gunshots. She and her classmates ducked behind their teacher's desk, and then the teacher began flipping the desk in an attempt to barricade the classroom door, Abner said. A classmate beside her was praying and she held his hand while the students waited for police.

Layla Ferrell, a junior, was in a health class when the words “hard lockdown” appeared on a screen in the classroom and lights began flashing. Ferrell said she and her frightened classmates piled desks and chairs in front of the door to create a barricade.

Helicopter video from WSB-TV showed dozens of law enforcement and emergency vehicles surrounding the school in Barrow County, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northeast of Atlanta.

When Erin Clark, 42, received a text from her son Ethan, a senior at the high school, that there was an active shooter, she rushed from her job at the Amazon warehouse to the school. The two texted “I love you,” and Clark said she prayed for her son as she drove to the high school.

With the main road blocked to the school, Clark parked and ran with other parents. Parents were then directed to the football field. Amid the chaos, Clark found Ethan sitting on the bleachers.

Clark said her son was writing an essay in class when he first heard the gunshots. Her son then worked with his classmates to barricade the door and hide.

“I’m so proud of him for doing that,” she said. “He was so brave.”

Students had only started the school year a little over a month ago.

“It makes me scared to send him back,” she said. “I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

Traffic going to the school was backed up for more than a mile as parents tried to get to their children there.

“It’s just outrageous that every day, in our country, in the United States of America, that parents have to send their children to school worried about whether or not their child will come home alive," Vice President Kamala Harris said during a campaign stop in New Hampshire.

In a message posted to social media, former President Donald Trump said: “These cherished children were taken from us far too soon by a sick and deranged monster.”

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said in a statement: “This is a day every parent dreads, and Georgians everywhere will hug their children tighter this evening because of this painful event.”

The FBI's Atlanta office said its agents were at the school "coordinating with and supporting local law enforcement.”

Apalachee High School has about 1,900 students, according to records from Georgia education officials. It became Barrow County's second largest public high school when it opened in 2000, according to the Barrow County School System. It’s named after the Apalachee River on the southern edge of Barrow County.

The shooting had reverberations in Atlanta, where patrols of schools in that city were beefed up, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said.

In Winder, Abner said that when she goes home Wednesday night, she hopes to avoid thinking about those terrifying moments in her geometry class.

“I’ll probably not think about it, even though it happened,” she said. “Just think happy thoughts, don’t think about it anymore.”

Sophomore Shantal Sanvee, who was in a classroom near the gunshots, said "I saw, like, a whole lot of blood. And it was just, it was just horrible.”

“I don't think I want to be here for like a long time now,” she added.

As an officer led the students towards the football stadium, freshman Michelle Moncada was in tears. People who she knew had been shot.

“I was just really, really nervous,” Moncada said.

The stadium was filled with tear-stricken students wondering whether their friends were okay. She saw one of her friends on the floor. A bullet had grazed him.

“It doesn’t feel real,” Moncada said.

Enrollment Opportunities

Northeastern is a global institution with flexible opportunities for undergraduates to experience various program locations and partnerships worldwide. Our students begin their Northeastern experience as part of signature first-year programs, which leverage our network of undergraduate campuses and partnerships with institutions across the globe.

Applying Early Decision

Early Decision applicants will be bound to their first-choice preference if they are admitted into that program. This will be true for preferences of any of our five first-year programs and for those who select “open to all opportunities” as their first preference. ED applicants will not be bound to an enrollment program if they are admitted into a program that was not their first-choice preference—a non-binding decision would be issued. To see additional benefits for students applying early decision, click below.

Enrollment Opportunities at NU

At Northeastern, we take a comprehensive approach to the application process. Each application is carefully reviewed with the goal of building a diverse community with intellectually motivated and engaged students. The Northeastern-specific section of the application will also allow you to indicate your preferences in our signature first-year programs. Please note that all applicants are considered to join the Northeastern community through all available first-year programs, no matter your indicated preference . Understanding your preferences helps guide the Admissions Committee. The estimated cost of attendance and federal financial aid eligibility varies for each program.
