15 Best Things to Do in Pereira (Colombia)

One of the capital cities of Colombia’s Coffee Triangle, Pereira is set amongst rolling hills and green valleys on the edge of the Andes. With warm weather year round and immense biodiversity in the surrounding landscapes, it’s the perfect city for exploring nature as well as the local coffee plantations. There are mountains to climb, nature reserves for wildlife watching, and plenty of camping, hiking, and biking within arm’s reach.

While Pereira itself might not be that pretty of a city, it sits in one of the most beautiful regions of Colombia and makes a good base for exploring the nearby towns of Salento and Manizales. You’ll find a coffee-based amusement park, plenty of cafes where you can get your fill of the stuff, and tours to explore how the country’s major export is grown and produced.

Let’s have a look at the best things to do in Pereira :

1. Bike Tours

Cycling

There’s no better way to explore Pereira and the surrounding coffee region than with a bike tour if you want to get outside and sneak in a little bit of exercise.

These tours are super popular because the guides give detailed insight into the destinations, culture, and wildlife.

RetroCiclas gets great reviews, and they’ll take you to some of the must-do sites around Pereira, whether you have one day or two weeks.

Using a combination of bikes and jeeps, you’ll visit nature reserves, coffee plantations, and visit smaller towns in the Colombian countryside that you might not see otherwise.

2. Parque del Café

Parque del Café, Quindio

An amusement park dedicated to coffee? Yep, located not too far away in the town of Quindio, you’ll find a whole theme park with rides, roller coasters, shows, games, and water attractions based on one of the country’s biggest crops.

Oh, and there are several cafes and restaurants where you can grab a cup of brew here too.

There’s an interactive coffee museum, trails through forested landscapes, and horseback rides, but the biggest attraction is the popular Coffee Show (Show del Café). It features talented performers showcasing local traditions, indigenous dances, and the music of the region with brilliant costumes, choreography, and stories.

3. Plaza Bolívar and the Catedral La Señora de Nuestra Pobreza

Plaza Bolívar and the Catedral La Señora de Nuestra Pobreza

Another Latin American square dedicated to “El Libertador,” this Plaza Bolívar is a place where people meet up to socialize, play chess, get their shoes shined, and grab something to eat from the street vendors.

One key difference in Pereira: the statue of Simon Bolivar, while still on horseback, is naked like a Greek god.

After you’ve had a glimpse, wander into the Catedral La Señora de Nuestra Pobreza to see its impressively high ceilings supported by intricate woodwork.

A feat of engineering, the interior is austere rather than ornate, making it a rarity among Catholic churches in this neck of the woods.

4. Lake Otún

Lake Otún

Located in the Parque Nacional Los Nevados, get out and visit Lake Otún, one of Pereira’s sources of freshwater.

Bring a fishing rod (or rent one) to try your hand at catching rainbow trout.

The lake is also an important habitat for many endangered Colombian species of birds, so you can try to spot them here.

You can camp around the lake if you want to spend the night, but remember the higher altitude makes it much cooler here! Take some hikes to viewpoints and check out all the interesting plants that make up the unique Páramo ecosystem.

There are many trails to attempt here – lots of visitors do a multi-day hike (staying in refugios) from El Cedral to La Pastora to El Jordan, with the arrival at Laguna del Otún as the final stop.

5. Buy Some Tailor-Made Clothing

Tailor-Made Clothing

There’s a huge clothing industry in Pereira, with big brands like Arturo Calle, Costa Azul, and Gino Pascalli all based here.

But even in the face of huge factories, this Colombian city retains the longtime tradition of making bespoke clothes.

If you’re not into shopping at the big stores, visit a mom and pop tailor shop for clothes made specifically to fit your body.

Check out Donnotto’s, where the owner has been in the business of clothing and dressmaking for many years.

He can measure and create pants, suits, and dresses within a few days, even adding in custom details like secret pockets.

6. Plaza de Mercado Minorista

Colorful Fruits

It’s weird, it’s interesting, and it’s filled with everything from exotic fruit to live animals.

Pereira’s biggest market (also known as Plaza Mercado de La 40) is the perfect place to see an authentic part of the city and take great photographs.

Go in the early morning when most stalls are open and prices are competitive.

Everyone shops here, from little old ladies to restaurant owners to old men in ponchos carrying machetes to young, hip Colombians.

It’s located near Calle 40 and Avenida 30 de Agosto, and there are lots of cheap places to try typical Colombian foods nearby.

7. Nevado Santa Isabel

Nevado Santa Isabel, Colombia

Another gorgeous site within Los Nevados National Park, go hiking up or around Santa Isabel, a shield volcano.

You can even reach the snowy summit if you love trekking and have a day to spare.

This hike is perfect if you’re interested in seeing the volcanic landscape, the páramo, and the interesting plant species like frailejones shrubs and cojines cushion plants.

These hikes aren’t for the faint of heart as the altitude is no joke, so be sure to acclimatize nearby for at least a day or two.

You can organize a tour – Ecosistemas is popular – if you want to do this 5 hour trek with a guide, transport, and meals all included.

8. Take a Coffee Tour

Pereira Plantantion

One of the main attractions of the coffee region is seeing how Colombia’s key export is made and then drinking some of the final product.

There are tons of fincas or farms where you can take tours to see how the owners grow, pick, dry, and process the coffee beans, and almost all of them culminate in a nice cup of Colombian brew.

You can DIY it by heading out to one of the farms like Don Manolo where they lead two tours per day to show you around their lush estate.

Or if you want to hit multiple producers and villages, you can book with a company like Viator that’ll provide transport out to Quindio, Pijao, or Santa Rosa de Cabal for tours and tastings.

9. Parque Regional Natural Ucumari

Parque Regional Natural Ucumari

A natural reserve that’s filled with waterfalls, lush greenery, and miles of walking trails, this is the place for you if you enjoy spending time in nature.

Just southeast of the city, it contains a range of rustic but comfortable accommodations, from cabins to hostel beds to camping spots, all set in the middle of the wilderness.

Entry to the actual reserve is free, but you’ll have to arrive on foot via a six-kilometer trail from El Cedral – it’s worth it though! You can purchase meals here and relax by the fire at night while drinking hot chocolate and listening to animal sounds.

10. Take a Day Trip to the Cocora Valley and Salento

Cocora Valley

Pereira’s smaller and seemingly more popular little cousin, the village of Salento receives a ton of tourists for its proximity to the Valle de Cocora.

Even if you’re not staying there, be sure to make your way out to Salento to see these giant wax palms in the middle of the bright green valley.

They’re the iconic postcard image of Colombia’s coffee region and a sight to behold, whether or not you do the five-hour hike through the valley and into the cloud forest.

Afterwards, swing by the village to see Salento’s charming and colorful main square and have a meal of fresh trout.

11. Cafe Culture

Coffee

You’re in the coffee region, so what better place to immerse yourself in a city’s cafe culture? In the past, rumor has it so many beans were exported that Colombians weren’t actually drinking too much of the quality stuff.

But a new wave of millennials and younger coffee producers are changing that by sourcing the best beans for independently owned coffee shops around Pereira.

So after you’ve tried Juan Valdez (the Colombian version of Starbucks, but better), hit some of the cool cafes for a really nice cup of joe… or fancy coffee drink.

El Barista, Cafetalex, Veredal , and Toranj are all good bets.

Then be sure to check out the colorful coffee jeeps on the side of the road because they serve up the freshest beans straight from the farm.

12. Otun Quimbaya Flora and Fauna Sanctuary

Otun Quimbaya Flora and Fauna Sanctuary

To get a glimpse of Colombia’s incredible biodiversity, check out this 489-hectare nature reserve southeast of Pereira (accessible via chiva bus). Otun Quimbaya has more than 300 species of birds, as well as two kinds of monkeys and tons of butterflies.

There are lots of hiking trails in the forests here, and you can even hire a guide to take a night walk when the wildlife is at its most active.

If you want to stay here, rooms have balconies that open up to the forest – your days will be filled with birdsong and animal sounds.

13. Visit Manizales

Manizales, Colombia

Just over an hour away from Pereira, you’ll find Manizales – “The City of Open Doors” – which is full of friendly people, universities, and the rolling hills of the Coffee Triangle.

Stay in El Cable, the commercial and nightlife center of the city and explore the hip bars and restaurants from there.

The city also has several hot springs, plazas, cable cars, an enormous cathedral, and a local soccer team, the Once Caldas.

Be sure to walk through Chipre, the highest point of the city, where you’ll have a great view of five different Colombian departments from up near the Fundadores Monument.

Mondongo

While in Pereira, you’ll obviously be drinking lots of coffee, but you should also try the traditional foods of Antioquia.

This includes mondongo, a hearty stew of tripe and vegetables, as well as the ubiquitous arepas, corn flour discs that are often filled with cheese.

Bandeja paisa is perhaps the most famous dish of the region.

It’s a gut-busting platter of meats like sausage and chicharron, beans, an egg, and an avocado thrown in for good measure.

La Ruana serves up traditional Colombian fare and a great bandeja paisa, but for something a little more elevated, check out La Latina.

If you’re feeling like a big steak served alongside your arepas, visit Rio y Carbon

15. Pereira Art Museum

Pereira Art Museum

If you’re an art lover, make a stop at the Pereira Art Museum for a wander through its four exhibition halls, audiovisual room, and movie theater.

Entry is free, and there’s also a library where you can relax and read.

It’s mostly contemporary artwork, and they frequently show independent films and host lectures here too.

The museum serves as a cultural space for the center, so check their Facebook page to see what events are coming up.

So grab a cup of Colombian coffee, and let’s delve into the captivating world of Pereira.

Table of Contents

Best time to travel to Pereira.

We believe that the best time to visit Pereira in Colombia is during the dry season from December to February. This is when the region’s landscape is at its best, with stunning rolling hills and lush greenery. The dry season also means that you can expect sunny and warm weather, perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking, exploring local coffee farms, and visiting the nearby hot springs.

However, if you are looking for a more festive experience, we suggest that you plan your visit during the annual Colombian Coffee Cultural Landscape Festival, held in early August. The festival celebrates the area’s rich coffee culture and includes live music, dancing, street parties, and, of course, plenty of coffee. Visitors can learn about the coffee-making process, sample different blends, and indulge in traditional Colombian cuisine. This festival is a true celebration of all things coffee and is not to be missed.

Overall, we suggest that you try to avoid visiting Pereira during the rainy season, typically from March to May and then again from September to November. The heavy rainfall during this time can disrupt travel plans and make hiking and other outdoor activities difficult. While Pereira is beautiful year-round, we believe that visiting during the dry season or during the coffee festival will provide you with the best experience.

Is Pereira safe?

We cannot deny the fact that safety concerns in Pereira have plagued the region for the last decade. However, it’s not all doom and gloom, we must acknowledge that significant steps have been taken to address the situation. The local government, in partnership with the police force, have implemented a series of security measures that have significantly reduced crime rates.

Additionally, Pereira has vibrant local communities and an impressive cultural heritage that makes it a unique destination for travelers. Visitors can enjoy its magnificent landmarks, delicious cuisines, and a range of activities that showcase the region’s beauty. The only caveat is to remain vigilant and follow common safety practices such as avoiding isolated areas and being conscious of your surroundings.

In conclusion, our final assessment is that Pereira is a stunning location that should be on the travel list of every adventurer. While we cannot turn a blind eye to the safety concerns, it’s important to remember that every city has its fair share of challenges. If you take the necessary precautions, you’re likely to have a fantastic time and an unforgettable experience.

How to travel to Pereira

When it comes to traveling to Pereira in Colombia, there’s no denying that it’s a city that deserves to be explored. However, some travelers might find it daunting to plan a trip to this destination. We’re here to tell you that it’s not only possible, but it’s also worth it.

First and foremost, getting to Pereira is relatively easy. The city has its own airport, which offers direct flights from major Latin American cities like Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali. If you’re coming from outside of the continent, you can connect through one of these regional hubs. Alternatively, you can take a bus or drive to Pereira from other parts of Colombia.

Once you’re in Pereira, there’s plenty to see and do. The city is known for its coffee culture, so we recommend visiting one of the local coffee farms to learn more about the production process. Additionally, the city has a vibrant food scene that’s worth exploring, with plenty of local restaurants serving up regional specialties. And if you’re looking for some outdoor adventure, don’t miss a chance to explore the Santa Rosa de Cabal hot springs or hike through the stunning Cocora Valley. With so much to offer, Pereira is a destination that’s well worth your time and energy.

Best area to stay in Pereira

As seasoned travelers, we know that finding the perfect area to stay in a city is crucial to a memorable trip. And when it comes to Pereira, Colombia, choosing the right neighborhood can make or break your visit. Here’s what we think about the best area to stay in Pereira.

If you are looking for a vibrant and lively experience, then La Circunvalar should be at the top of your list. With a plethora of restaurants, bars, and clubs, this bustling neighborhood is known for its lively nightlife. Plus, the area offers plenty of options for entertainment during the day, with shopping centers, parks, and museums within close proximity.

But for those who wish to immerse themselves in the cultural heart of Pereira, we highly recommend staying in the historic downtown. With its colonial architecture, picturesque streets, and charming plazas, the downtown area offers a glimpse into the city’s past while providing a wealth of modern-day conveniences. It’s the best place to stay if you want to live like a local and explore Pereira’s rich heritage.

Ultimately, whether you prefer the energy of a bustling neighborhood or the charm of a historic downtown, there is an area in Pereira that is perfect for you. So, go ahead and explore this vibrant city, and don’t forget to consider the local gems that will make your stay unforgettable.

How to get around in Pereira

Getting around any major city in Colombia can be a daunting task, but Pereira is no exception. While the city has a comprehensive public transportation system, navigating it can be a bit tricky. We recommend taking the local buses as a great way to get around. However, if you’re looking for a more comfortable and personalized experience, taking a taxi or using ride-hailing services can be a good option.

One thing to keep in mind when riding in a taxi or using a ride-hailing service is to always negotiate the fare before departing. Many drivers do not use a meter, so it’s crucial to agree on a price beforehand to avoid any surprises. We believe that safety should also be a top priority when using these services, and we recommend using reputable companies and asking locals for recommendations.

If you’re feeling adventurous and want to explore different parts of the city, renting a bicycle is a great option. There are several rental companies located throughout Pereira, and the city is relatively bike-friendly. However, we advise being cautious when biking on the city’s busy roads and using designated bike lanes whenever possible. Regardless of the mode of transportation you choose, getting around Pereira can be an exciting and enriching experience.

From the homemade pasta dishes to the wood-fired pizzas, everything is made with care and attention to detail. And let’s not forget about the tiramisu, which is simply divine. Each dish is meticulously prepared with locally-sourced ingredients and bursting with rich, tantalizing flavors. As you wander through the vibrant crowds, you’ll be treated to an array of street performers, food vendors, and local artisans, all showcasing their talents in the heart of downtown Pereira.

Syracuse Boat Tours offer themed cruises on Onondaga Lake

There are few American cities where you can relax on a boat in the middle of a lake and take in a sweeping view of the skyline as you sip a cocktail.

Syracuse is one of those geographically blessed cities where such pleasures are possible—if you own a boat, that is.

Now the boatless among us can enjoy a cruise around Onondaga Lake without the hassle of owning a boat, thanks to Syracuse Boat Tours , a new marine tourism-focused company that began booking cruises earlier this month.

The public response so far has been “pretty solid,” said owner/operator Annette Peters, a Syracuse native who lives on the Seneca River.

“I love this community, and we’ve got a jewel in Onondaga Lake that we just don’t appreciate,” Peters said. “I’ve taken people out on my boat on Onondaga Lake for years and they’re always so shocked how beautiful it is and how seldom its used.”

Syracuse Boat Tours

Peters says she’s picking up where Mid-Lakes Navigation, the last company to offer Onondaga Lake cruises, left off about 10 years ago. The company operates one boat at the moment, a 22-passenger pontoon boat.

Scheduled open-seating for one-hour or 90-minute cruises depart daily. The best way to get a seat is to book online . The boat is also available for private charters.

Depending on the cruise, admission costs $12.50-$15 for children; $27.50-$30 for adults.

Syracuse Boat Tours offers a range of themed cruises, including:

  • Tiki Cruises: jam to Caribbean music as you sip fruity cocktails/mocktails. On Tiki Tuesdays the boat will pick you up and drop you off at the funky Tiki Bar on the Seneca River, where passengers get a ten percent discount.
  • Happy Hour Cruises: Cruise from the Seneca River into the lake and watch the Syracuse skyline come into view. Music provided, or passengers can bring their own playlists.
  • Historical Cruises: Narrated cruises that delve into the lake’s long history.
  • Sunset Cruises: Get a front row seat to a spectacular sunset over the lake.

Other themed cruises will be scheduled throughout the summer, including a wine-tasting tour, a Seneca River cruise, bourbon-tasting tour, and fall cider and foliage tours.

If business is good, Peters plans to upgrade service next year with a bigger boat ideal for dinner cruises. The pontoon boat could then be used to shuttle passengers to the Amp, Inner Harbor/Aquarium, Onondaga Lake Park, or the Tiki Bar on the river.

As more people recognize Onondaga Lake as a tourist destination, Peters says she’s positioned to take advantage of CNY’s future growth.

“We need a water taxi, and this is the first one,” she said. “That’s the dream.”

We Asked AI to Take Us On a Tour of Our Cities. It Was Chaos

Image may contain Art Collage Advertisement and Poster

With high hopes of finding some hidden gems in our home cities and $100 (£77) each burning a hole in our pockets, we—Natasha Bernal in London and Amanda Hoover in New York—asked AI to plan out the perfect day.

We decided to use Littlefoot, an AI-powered local discovery chatbot that can generate experiences in 161 cities around the world. It was created by Bigfoot, a startup founded by former Airbnb executives Alex Ward, James Robinson, and Shane Lykins that purports to enmesh the minds of all the publicly available AI chatbots, including ChatGPT, Claude, Llama, Anthropic, and Perplexity, in addition to 50 information sources such as Tripadvisor and Google. Bigfoot claims to use three different language models as “AI agents” to create itineraries.

We told Littlefoot our respective starting points, dates, and times, and introduced some caveats: Amanda asked that her New York tour be dog-friendly; Natasha was obsessed with avoiding London’s crowded tourist hotspots.

The results were, frankly, rather mad. Right now, Littlefoot has no concept of time or space or what a human being might find interesting. Its recommendations vary wildly from the incredibly niche (climbing up a hill in South East London) to the wildly vague (going to the London Zoo, no further instruction provided). The same attractions—such as the London Eye, the Namco Funscape arcade in Romford, a cycling studio in Brooklyn—kept coming up in recommendations, to the point that we suspected it might be paid-for advertising. (Bigfoot has confirmed that is not the case and that it has no plans to offer sponsored picks.)

It recommended back-to-back gym sessions in London, a concert and helicopter tour in New York that were out of our budget, restaurants for lunch that didn’t open until dinner time, and itineraries that would have sent us criss-crossing around our respective cities. In London, Bigfoot’s map function showed two out of the four suggested destinations in completely wrong locations, an issue that the company says it is working on.

“While we expect to face typical challenges associated with an early company, we are confident in our ability to meet them as we acquire more resources and continue to refine our approach based on user feedback,” says Bigfoot CEO Alex Ward. “We’re a preseed startup of six, and itineraries aren’t meant to be perfect just yet. But we are working to do everything we can to get there in the not-too-distant future.”

Bigfoot says its features—which are currently very contingent on the location you provide and how you phrase what you’re looking for—have been tested by 70 to 80 alpha users this year, and the company is refining the platform based on feedback.

A Day Around London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

I picked a day centered around the 560-acre sporting village, which features pedal boats, a track cycling arena, and tennis courts. I had never been before and assumed it would be great fun. It wasn’t.

My day started at 10 am at WIRED’s office in Central London. The first stop was in East London, to eat at a place called Pizza Union, which didn’t open until 11 and which Littlefoot claimed had slices priced £6. (It was wrong.) Armed with Google and a comrade, fellow Londoner and WIRED staffer Sophie Johal, I marched to the underground for a 3-mile trip to Aldgate East, a place I can confidently say no one goes to voluntarily.

Priscila, Queen of the Rideshare Mafia

We stalled until the pizza place opened. I ordered a margarita pizza pie and a bottle of water, and we sat on a wooden bench on the sidewalk, complete with a view of a strip club called White’s. I choked a bit on an inordinately crispy piece of basil.

Then we walked just over a mile to the next stop, the historic Borough food market, near London Bridge. On the way, in the 17th-century church of Saint Magnus the Martyr, we found a 2,000-year-old crusty-looking wooden log randomly tucked in under the entrance way. Were it not for this trip, we might have lived our entire lives never having seen it.

Across London Bridge, we arrived at the market, where we had to navigate around bag-wearing people and other obstacles to find Horn OK Please, a random Indian street-food stall that happened to be one of the only vegetarian eateries in the entire place. We stood next to a trash bin at around midday and ate dosa chaat (a wrap filled with masala potatoes, onion, coriander, and chutneys). I was sweating profusely, felt like I had eaten a brick, and began to worry about whether I would make it to the Olympic Village at all.

We jumped back on the tube and headed in a circle to Trafalgar Square—2 miles away and five minutes from WIRED’s office. We stood in a crowded queue for 10 minutes outside the National Gallery, and after seeing some familiar public art from the likes of Degas, Murillo, Raphael, and Gainsborough, rewarded ourselves with treats from the gift shop (some badges featuring Van Gogh and Manet artwork and the museum logo, and a chocolate coin—the only things we could afford on our budget).

Back on the tube, I took the Elizabeth Line—opened in 2022—for my first time ever, to get to Stratford and the Olympic Park. Severely tired and dehydrated, I led us beyond mega-supermall Westfield, which overlooked a gigantic car park, to a not-very-scenic path near blocks of flats. By that point, we had figured out that the pedal boats weren’t working, that you had to take a training course for the cycling track, and that the tennis courts were unaffordable on our meager remaining budget.

There was no sign of the hideous steel Orbit Tower , or anything else noteworthy for that matter—we just saw blocks of midrise flats and a rather large park. Invoking the spirit of the Olympics and taking advantage of the fact that we were practically alone, we attempted to complete an obstacle course in a nearby fitness playground. (We got stuck on the equipment a few times.)

And that’s how we ended up lost near the Wetlands Walk close to the River Lea, cycling around on the only available rental e-bike I could find. Unfortunately it could only travel at breakneck speed, so I spent about 20 minutes screaming in genuine fear as I hurtled back and forth through the same bit of stinky swampland, with Sophie perched precariously on the fender like a human pannier.

I gave up attempting to find anywhere after it started to pelt down rain, and realized I had paid £6 for the e-bike, for the pleasure of going absolutely nowhere. We never even found the bike track, and were too exhausted to go to our final stop, six miles away at Bradley’s Spanish Bar. Instead I had an ice cream (two scoops: one straciatella, the other chocolate and hazelnut) at a place near the station. I had a cuppa, and at £64 spent, called it a day.

In the darkest moments, I would have described the itinerary as a teeny bit evil and a lot pointless. It would take two minutes with an internet connection to come up with a better plan, but it would not be as chaotic and random—and ultimately unforgettable.

As soon as I got home, I asked ChatGPT to come up with a rival day: It suggested a cultural walk along the South Bank, winding around Big Ben and the London Eye, with stops to enjoy some art and culture along the way. It made sense, but a small part of me—the same one that screeched in delight at seeing a giant slide that we could go on—wonders whether there was some magic in Littlefoot’s mundane (and inane) picks.

A Day Around Washington Square Park and Central Park in New York

I wanted to see whether Littlefoot could do something a little challenging: Plan a day around Manhattan that I could bring my dog, a 22-pound poodle mix named Charlie, along on. Turns out, it couldn’t.

The app gave me recommendations for a park in New Jersey that wasn’t accessible without a car and two restaurants with the word “dog” in the name—although I’m not sure dogs would be allowed inside—and repeatedly tried to persuade me to take a spin class in Brooklyn, I’m assuming because the word “friendly” was in the description. It also highlighted an expensive helicopter tour of Manhattan when I asked for outdoor activities and, at one point, a Noah Kahan concert (sold out, with only pricey resale tickets available).

Sifting through the options took some work and reprompting. Some of the restaurants recommended were closed at the times Littlefoot suggested I go, and they would send me between the city’s boroughs, or even further out of my way—even when I asked for a day in Manhattan that was completely accessible by subway.

I combined and pruned two itineraries to save myself some agony of hours on the subway. I left Harlem at around 8 am and headed to my first stop: the Obelisk in Central Park, a 3,500-year-old monument brought over from Egypt. Charlie was particularly happy with this plan, as we made it to the park during off-leash hours, and he was free to roam the greenery and trails with other dogs.

We walked a mile across Manhattan’s Upper East Side to get to Claire’s Kitchen Cafe, a tiny Mediterranean-inspired spot with outdoor seating that Littlefoot had recommended. It definitely wasn’t a tourist trap, but rather a neighborhood spot. I had a cream cheese and smoked salmon breakfast sandwich and a latte, both of which were good, but not necessarily something I would travel to a new neighborhood to eat.

Charlie and I took the subway downtown and got off near Washington Square Park, our next suggested stop. The park was quieter than normal on a weekday morning, although I saw some probable TikTokkers running up to people on benches to interview them. We walked past the iconic archway and fountain, and stopped at the dog park, where I threw a tennis ball for Charlie.

We got back on the subway and rode to the AI-recommended 9/11 Memorial & Museum—a somber stop mixed in with all the recommendations for parks and pubs. With my dog in tow, I couldn’t go into the museum, but we did walk around the memorial, and Charlie made a few friends with tourists there.

Our last stop was at the Dead Rabbit for lunch. It was a quirky Irish pub with upscale bar food and drinks, and a bunch of dollar bills taped to the shelves holding liquor. It’s been deemed the best bar in the world by some, and luckily, it was dog-friendly, with one little table out front that was empty when I arrived. I had a burger and a drink, which ran me about $50 with tip. (Charlie slept at my feet during lunch, undisturbed by nearby construction sounds, but completely knocked out.)

About five hours later, I was exhausted and had spent $90 between the subway and food. We had traveled from Harlem, toward the top of Manhattan, to the Financial District at the bottom, taking five trains and walking 5 miles to hit Littlefoot’s recommended spots. I had to rely on my own knowledge of the city to create the most efficient route between the various recommendations provided by Littlefoot.

Afterward, I ran a similar prompt through Perplexity’s chatbot, and found an itinerary with more details about prices and how to get around. This wasn’t perfect, either. It recommended I take Charlie to Manhattan’s iconic High Line, which doesn’t allow dogs, and gave vague advice about buying a bagel from a street vendor “nearby” Central Park. But it did give recommendations in several known parts of the city that would keep me under budget.

Littlefoot got me to try some new restaurants and explore some new corners of famous parks—plus, it got me out of the house and away from my routine. But had I followed its recommendations exactly, I may have ended up going to Brooklyn or Queens to find restaurants with their doors closed, or gone way over budget on some experiences. AI might have some new recommendations, but until the technology improves, I’d rather just ask a fellow New Yorker where to go.

Daryl Hall.

In 1984, Elvis Costello released his eighth studio album with the Attractions, Goodbye Cruel World . It included the exuberant track, “The Only Flame in Town,” which featured guest backing vocals by Daryl Hall. Although both artists came from different genres during the 1980s–Costello with New Wave and Hall with rock and pop—their collaboration on that song proved to be quite an ideal match given their affinity for soul music.

Forty years, Hall and Costello have teamed up again — not in the recording studio but for a summer co-headlining North American tour that kicked off last month and continues through July 25. One of the tour’s dates included a stop at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall where the two legendary acts played on Tuesday their best-known songs and some deep cuts, showcasing the long-running popularity and durability of their music catalogs.

For Hall, his latest solo tour coincided with the release of his new album, simply titled D , which was co-produced by Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart (the two previously worked together on Hall’s second solo effort, 1986’s Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine ). Accompanied by his strong band, Hall performed a set that leaned heavily on his famed work with John Oates beginning with the classic smash “Maneater. From there, it was hit after hit from Hall and Oates’ repertoire such as “Rich Girl,” “Kiss on My List,” “Private Eyes” and “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)” – beloved works that provided the soundtrack for Generation X’ers and continues to attract new younger fans, some of who were present at the Radio City show.

Additionally, the singer revisited a few cuts from his solo records, including the driving rocker “Dreamtime” (his first and only solo Top 10 hit) and the underrated gem “Foolish Pride”— both from the Three Hearts album. He acknowledged his Philadelphia roots with an elegant performance of “I’m in a Philly Mood” from 1993’s Soul Alone record – one of the show’s several ballads that displayed Hall’s signature soulful vocal delivery alongside “Sara Smile” and “Everytime You Go Away,” the latter Hall and Oates song famously covered by Paul Young.

For the encore, Hall performed a new song off of D , the infectiously catchy “Can’t Say No to You”; its positive reception from the Radio City audience could hopefully nudge Hall to play more songs off D , which is a fine album, onstage. “Can’t Say No to You” perfectly segued into the night’s final song, the equally upbeat Hall and Oates number “You Make My Dreams.”

Elvis Costello.

Earlier in the evening, Costello played an entertaining set with the Imposters – keyboardist Steve Nieve, drummer Pete Thomas and bassist Davey Faragher with special guest guitarist Charlie Sexton – and it got off to a rollicking start with the rocker “Pump It Up.” A few other well-known gems from his stardom-catapulting late ‘70s/eary 1980s era were also performed such as “Watching the Detectives,” “Everyday I Write the Book,” “Alison” and “Green Shirt,” but they only represented a portion of his eclectic career. In the same show, he dug in deep with songs that drew from folk, country and blues including “Indoor Fireworks” (from the acclaimed 1986 album King of America ), a cover of Mose Allison’s “Everybody's Cryin' Mercy,” and “A Face in the Crowd,” the latter song from the upcoming London musical of the same name.

To his credit, Costello rearranged a few of his songs in the set, bringing a new wrinkle to them, particularly for “Mystery Dance” from 1977’s My Aim Is True –this time rendered as a gritty, soulful-blues number that contrasted from its original ‘50s retro rock incarnation. Another popular Costello song, “Clubland,” underwent a slight revision and included a reference to “Ghost Town” by the Specials, whose 1979 debut album was produced by the man himself. Costello and the Imposters concluded their set on a high with the rousing “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding.” Costello was in fine form while each member of the Imposters — especially former Attractions Nieve and Thomas—rose to the occasion.

It would’ve been a tremendous moment had Costello and Hall performed “The Only Flame in Town” together onstage at Radio City, just to bring things full circle from their collaboration 40 years ago. They didn’t, but the artists’ respective fans still got to hear the hits and more.

Travis Kelce Puts His Arm Around Taylor Swift as They Walk Out of Her Eras Tour Show in Germany

The Chiefs tight end caught another of Swift's shows before he's due back in Missouri for training camp

Travis Kelce can't get enough of his girlfriend Taylor Swift 's show.

One day after marking his 13th time seeing the Eras Tour , Kelce, 34, was spotted with his arm around the "Fortnight" singer as the couple departed the stage at Gelsenkirchen's Veltins Arena in Germany on Thursday, July 18.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end was spotted by fans at the second night of 34-year-old Swift's three shows at the arena.

In a video shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), the songstress waved to fans as she exited in her royal blue Midnights era bodysuit.

Kelce looked proud with his arm around Swift. The pro baller wore a white shirt and matching baseball cap to the show, his 14th time seeing the record-breaking Eras Tour.

The sighting comes just one day after Swifties celebrated Kelce's 13th Swift concert, which matched the number of Chiefs games she attended last season.

The number 13 has always been a mainstay of Swift's universe, in part because it's her birthdate, and her 13th game happened to be the Chiefs' 2024 Super Bowl victory. Back in February, she traveled to Las Vegas directly from a Tokyo concert to attend the big game and meet Kelce on the field after the Chiefs' win.

Kelce is due back in Missouri for Chiefs training camp on July 21, reuniting with quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid .

Both Mahomes, 28, and Reid, 66, have shared their support for the superstar couple this offseason.

On July 6, Mahomes and his wife Brittany joined Kelce at Swift's show in London, where they were seen dancing and cheering in a private suite.

Reid spoke highly of the pairing during a recent podcast interview, calling Kelce "an outgoing guy" who can always "light the room up."

"I think it's great for him. He can handle it. As a matter of fact, I think he probably loves it to a point. I think there's a great escape for him," the coach said of how Kelce manages Swift's fame on  The Athletic 's   Scoop City  podcast on July 16.

Reid even joked that his tight end could "be the support or the waterboy," for Swift on tour during the interview.

Travis Kelce couldn’t keep his hands to himself as he escorted Taylor Swift out of the Veltins-Arena on the second night of her Eras Tour stop in Germany.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end was seen leaving Swift’s concert with his arm wrapped around her shoulder as they exited the venue in Gelsenkirchen together on Thursday night.

Kelce wore a white T-shirt and a pair of blue shorts which he paired with some white sneakers and a matching colored hat.

The songstress hugged him back during their walk out.

The outing comes just days before the NFL champion is expected to report to the Chiefs training camp in Kansas City, Missouri, on Friday. The camp officially begins on Sunday.

The team is currently hosting a mini camp for the rookies and quarterbacks, which started earlier this week.

Kelce, 34, was also present for the team’s mandatory mini camp last month which ended on the same day as the team’s ring ceremony where they picked up their Super Bowl LVIII championship jewelry.

“I think everybody is pretty motivated to keep the mentality we had last year,” Kelce told the Chiefs news site . “We didn’t get to ‘back-to-back’ by always talking about ‘back-to-back.’ We got there by trying to figure out the best way to get better from the last week. I think that mentality is key.”

In the meantime, Kelce has been spending time with his leading lady.

On Wednesday, they were spotted packing on the PDA while they left the arena on night one of her Germany shows.

The songstress, 34, chose to combine her songs “Invisible String” and “Superstar” while Kelce was in the audience, leading fans to believe she did it as a special nod to her boyfriend.

Travis Kelce Eras Tour

It’s been rumored that Swift wrote the 2009 tune, “Superstar,” which talks about falling in love with a celebrity at the peak of his career, about ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas.

“Invisible String” is allegedly about her more recent ex, Joe Alwyn.

“taylor removed invisible string from the setlist only 4 shows [into her Eras Tour] bc it was too painful to sing… since she sang it tonight, it makes me believe that it doesn’t hurt to sing anymore bc travis IS her soulmate. she was always tied to him, it just took some time to find each other,” one fan commented .

The most unlikely city on Taylor Swift’s Europe tour: Gelsenkirchen

This long down-on-its-luck German city is so pleased with its momentary good fortune that it has temporarily declared itself “Swiftkirchen.”

city tour pereira

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany — It stands out on Taylor Swift’s European tour schedule . Sandwiched between concert stops in Milan and Hamburg, it is the one city most people have never heard of.

But an estimated 180,000 Swifties are descending on Gelsenkirchen this week for three sold-out shows. Never before have so many cowboy boots trod the paving stones of the market square.

This long down-on-its-luck city is so pleased with its momentary good fortune that it has hung yellow signs declaring itself “Swiftkirchen” — literally, the churches of Swift.

“We’re looking forward to a sharing the experience with Taylor Swift fans,” said Mayor Karin Welge. “I think there will be a lot of positive encounters that will also be contagious for locals.”

She also hopes the attention will be helpful for the city.

Gelsenkirchen is part of Swift’s tour by virtue of its stadium. Normally home to a pro soccer team, Schalke 04, the venue has a retractable roof and is among the few arenas in Germany that can accommodate more than 50,000 people.

“You could say that the spiritual center of the city is actually the stadium,” said local historian Daniel Schmidt.

About 60,000 fans are expected to fill the arena for each night of Swift’s shows. During the first concert, on Wednesday night, Swift made a point of thanking the stadium workers. “The incredible crew at this stadium are so quick getting to you guys really, really fast, and helping out to make sure that you have water and make sure you’re cared for,” she said.

Gelsenkirchen is just under an hour’s drive from the Dutch border, so it’s also accessible from the Netherlands and Belgium.

But before this week, the Germans, Dutch and Belgians who actually knew about Gelsenkirchen may not have had high opinions of it. The city has the country’s highest unemployment rate, highest child poverty rate and lowest wages.

Gelsenkirchen was once a major European coal-mining hub. A sign at the train station still greets arrivals with “Glück auf!” — a traditional miners’ expression, used to wish colleagues a safe return to the surface.

The city, though, has never recovered from the decline of its main industry. When it served last month as one of 10 locations for the Euro 2024 soccer championship, a Sky News reporter told viewers: “There’s not really much left in Gelsenkirchen.”

Economic frustrations and concerns about immigration have bolstered support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which won 21.7 percent of the vote here in last month’s European Parliament elections.

But the Swift shows offer a brief reprieve for everyone. The anticipation was such that local newspaper Rheinische Post starting published a regular newsletter, “Waiting for Taylor,” back in May.

This week, a tram that runs between Gelsenkirchen and neighboring Bochum has been plastered with images of the singer. Taylor Swift club nights are taking place in and around the city. And a three-day “Taylor Town” market is underway in Heinrich Koenig Square.

The July sun reflected off sequined dresses and jackets Wednesday, as fans in Taylor Town danced and sang along to a Taylor Swift-inspired DJ set. Some Swifties posed for selfies in front of images of their favorite albums. Others exchanged friendship bracelets as they perused merchandise and ate bratwurst.

Inside one of the covered stalls, Pauline Rosenstock, 23, a nurse from Uelzen, in northern Germany, opted for a more permanent souvenir: a tattoo.

“These are the ‘autumn leaves falling’ that Taylor sings about in ‘All Too Well,’” she said, pointed to the design being etched close to the crease of her left arm.

The three concerts will be particularly profitable for retail, restaurants and hotels in the area, according to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) for the North Westphalia region. The estimated 1,000 hotel rooms in Gelsenkirchen — which this week cost up to three times the usual price per night — have long been fully booked.

Figures based on the spending habits of festivalgoers suggest that Swifties could spend an estimated $110 to $220 per day just on food and drink, said IHK’s Jochen Grütters, responsible for the Gelsenkirchen area.

“The state of North Rhine-Westphalia is on summer vacation at the time of the concerts and many families without tickets will certainly visit Gelsenkirchen and Taylor Town as a vacation activity,” Grütters said.

Ice cream shop owner Graziella Dell’Aquila, 58, created a Swiftkirchen special in the singer’s honor. The strawberry, cream and white chocolate concoction, topped with edible glitter, gold and butterflies, has been a hit.

“We already sold five containers on the day before the first concert,” she said. “Our ice cream maker is working like crazy in the back.”

Among those wandering the streets of Gelsenkirchen this week are American fans who have planned summer vacations around Swift’s European concerts — figuring that airfare, hotels and a few hundred dollars for a ticket here is still more affordable than the astronomical prices for Taylor Swift tickets in the United States.

“Our tickets here were much cheaper than in the U.S., and we’re happy to travel in Europe,” said McKenna Waldman, 29, a customer service manager from Wisconsin, as she waited outside the arena with a friend Wednesday.

Brad Davis, 51, a real estate broker from North Carolina, traveled 4,213 miles with his wife and two teenage children to Gelsenkirchen for Swift’s second concert in the city, before spending time elsewhere in Germany and France.

“This will be an introduction to Europe for my kids,” Davis said, adding that the family was looking forward to sharing their experience with fans from around the world.

German Swifties Bernd Gerwing, 20, and Sabrina Munck, 35, who ran a Facebook group connecting fans in the run-up to the three concerts, had a considerably shorter journey. Munck is a native “Gelsenkirchenerin,” and said she was proud to see her hometown listed alongside the likes of London, Paris and Milan.

“It’s definitely one of the least-attractive corners of the Ruhr region,” she said, referring to the dreary parts of the city’s architecture erected out of the rubble of World War II. “But I come from here. I don’t know it any different.”

Julia Meya and Marius Rupieper, both 31, helped organize the Taylor Town market. “There’s some truth to the negative comments about Gelsenkirchen,” Rupieper said. “The city’s not doing well in many areas, and that’s something that’s always troubled us. We’ve both seen a lot of the world and still want to change something here.”

“But the response from locals has also been overwhelmingly positive,” Meya said. “Looking around and seeing the joy this is bringing people almost brought a tear to my eye.”

Swift is by no means the first global star to perform at the city’s Veltins Arena. The Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen and Metallica have all come through here.

“The thing that’s different this time is the fan base,” Rupieper said. “Maybe this is the start of something where the city can really be a host when international stars come here.”

Gelsenkirchen is perhaps the ultimate test of whether Swift can, as she sings, “make the whole place shimmer.”
