Loop of the Grand Canal of the Château de Versailles

Logo Outdooractive Editors

Explanation

The Grand Canal is the work of Louis XIV's gardener, André le Nôtre. This part of the chateau's park was originally a wetland that this genius gardener transformed into a gigantic water reservoir.

The Tour du Canal is paved with asphalt and is the largest of its kind in France.

The Tour du Canal is tarred and homemade, the other part of the course is on gravel. For many local riders, this course offers a fabulous training ground with views of the canal and its surroundings.

Open daily: High season (Spring / summer): 7am - 8.30pm Low season (Autumn / Winter): 8am - 6pm

Entrance to the park with a vehicle is subject to a fee. Free parking is available near the Porte Saint Antoine.

Bars and restaurants are available.

Bars and restaurants are open in high season and on some days in low season.

If running is not enough for you, you can also rent bicycles and boats.

Dogs are not allowed in the park.

Dogs are not allowed in the gardens (near the castle) and must be kept on a leash in the park.

Marly lies 7 km north-west of Versailles, halfway between Versailles and the palace of Saint Germain en Laye, and was Louis XIV’s second great work. The king used it as a residence for leisure and kept access to it restricted to only a few privileged courtiers. Here, Jules Hardouin-Mansart demonstrated his dual talent as an architect and gardener by creating one of the most original works of the 17th century. The palace of Marly was gradually demolished in the early 19th century. The park and other features, such as the drinking pool with its two ponds, still remain today.
