1. Where Are Leisure Travel Vans RVs Made?

Unlike most popular motorhome companies, the leisure Travel Vans RV company is located in Winkler, Manitoba, Canada.

The company is one of the more popular Canadian motorhome companies because of its attention to detail and because the motorhome company’s products can be classified as luxurious.

The Leisure Travel Van company manufactures all its products in Winkler’s small city in Canada at its modern manufacturing facility.

If you’re interested in participating in a factory tour so that you can figure out if the Leisure Travel Van company is suited to you, it would be best to contact the company directly.

Should you contact the company directly, they should give you an estimated timeline for when and where factory tours will be held.

2. Who Owns the Leisure Travel Vans Company?

The Leisure Travel Vans RV company and the Triple E Recreational Vehicles company joined forces a few years back.

The Triple E company owner, P.W. Enns, owned a plumbing and heating business before deciding to branch out into motorhomes with his two sons in law Peter Elias and Phil Ens.

Together these three went on to establish one of the last remaining motorhome companies in Canada.  It’s believed that the idea started when Enns visited Elkhart, Indiana, in America, where most large motorhome companies manufacture their models.

When he arrived back in Canada, Enns contacted his sons-in-law Elias and Ens and established Triple E in 1965 with a bright vision in mind.

Over the years, Ens has stuck to his vision and with the help of his sons-in-law and company employees. Together the company has managed to firmly entrench the Leisure Travel Vans brand into the heart of valued customers.

The Leisure Travel Vans brand, however, was not founded until 1978. The true founders of this brand that falls under the Triple E umbrella were Reg and Saide Harder.

Fast forward to 2010, and the Triple E company and the Leisure Travel Vans brand were finally consolidated into one operation due to the economic crisis the world was facing.

3. What Types and Sizes of RVs Does Leisure Travel Vans Produce?

The Leisure Travel Vans RV company has been in business for more than 50 years.

In that time, they have manufactured many different RV categories such as fifth wheels, travel trailers, and Class A motorhomes. Currently, the company is focusing on producing luxury compact Class C motorhomes which have been a success thus far.

Presently the company only has two models, namely the “Wonder” and “Unity,” manufacturing. Each of these models has different floorplans with variable pricing.

You will likely find one of the models to your liking if you want a luxurious, spacious, yet compact motorhome.

These models’ size range is between 24 feet and 9 inches and 25 feet and 1 inch. Additionally, these models also come with the option of having three different sleeping arrangement options.

The Wonder model’s starting price is $121,000, while the Unity model’s starting price is $141,000.

Furthermore, the Wonder models can sleep two people while the Unity models can comfortably sleep up to four people.

4. Does Leisure Travel Vans Make a Toy Hauler?

The Leisure Travel vans RV company does not manufacture toy hauler motorhomes.

The company may in the future decide to produce toy haulers. Still, the  company is focusing its energies on manufacturing luxurious Class C motorhomes at this time.

5. What Are the Smallest RVs from Leisure Travel Vans?

where are leisure travel vans made

The smallest RV you can currently purchase from the Leisure Travel Vans motorhome company is the Wonder Model.

This Class C motorhome is durably built on a Ford Transit chassis and is designed to provide consumers up to 67 cubic exterior storage feet.

The inside of this model is elegantly designed and features many luxurious features. Additionally, you can sleep up to two people in the Wonder models, making them ideal for solo travelers or couples.

When you walk inside this model, you will doubtlessly notice the sleek contemporary look that consists of light wood cabinetry and flooring complemented by crisp white ceilings and comfortable grey tone furniture.

The kitchen and dinette area might be small, but it’s built to be luxuriously comfortable while you enjoy a beverage in the morning.

The dry bath area is incredibly tiny but built efficiently with a modern shower cubicle with more than enough space to enjoy a shower after a long day of adventuring.

Depending on the model you select, the van’s rear will have a twin bed layout or murphy bed layout that will transform when the lounge chairs are maneuvered.

Wonder Class C Motorhome Top Features:

  • This model’s glass windows are frameless, giving the entire RV a sleek look from the outside in.
  • The bathroom features a stand-up shower area, a bathroom sink with cabinetry, and a toilet.
  • Inside the Wonder, models are a powerful 15000 BTU air conditioning system.

  • In the interior, there is gorgeous accent lighting by the cabinetry.
  • A small entertainment system includes a 28 inch LED television, a Bluetooth soundbar, and a Blu-ray player.

6. What Are the Biggest RVs from Leisure Travel Vans?

where are leisure travel vans made

The biggest RV on offer from the Leisure Travel Vans motorhome company is the Unity Model.

The Unity models are built on a Mercedes Sprinter chassis, allowing for more space than built on a Ford Transit chassis like the brand’s Wonder models.

Customers will be able to choose from six different floorplan options and numerous unique features. Additionally, the company offers many gorgeous color schemes with the Unity models, so you’re bound to find something you love.

If you choose the corner bed Unity floorplan option, you will see gorgeous dark wood cabinetry enhanced by the sparkling white countertops, accents, and furniture. The kitchen is small yet compact with a glass top stove, kitchen sink, and fridge freezer combo.

Across from the kitchen is a lovely dinette area with space for up to four people to enjoy a meal together.

The Unity models can sleep up to four people with a private bedroom that features a unique corner bed. The corner bed allows for a spacious look and provides ample walking room to the rear bathroom.

With this floorplan, the dinette area doubles as a lounge area and faces the TV and kitchen.

Unity Class C Motorhome Top Features:

  • A comfortable 52-inch by 76-inch corner bed big enough for two adults to sleep comfortably.
  • The dinette/lounge area folds out into another sleeping space that can accommodate another two people.
  • Multiple Televisions in the lounge area and the bedroom area.
  • Sleek curved wooden cabinetry.
  • 15000 BTU airconditioning unit to keep everyone cool during the summer.
  • Efficient water filtration unit that works throughout the unity models.

7. What Are The Most Popular RVs by Leisure Travel Vans?

With over 50 years of experience in manufacturing quality luxury compact motorhomes, the company has had many popular models.

As most of us are aware, the Leisure Travel Vans motorhome company currently only manufactures luxury compact class C motorhomes. Despite this, they have continued to remain a leading Canadian brand with a favorable international audience.

Both the Unity and Wonder models are popular amongst both big and small families.

These models are likely to continue being popular because of their stylish designs and luxury features.

8. Are Leisure Travel Vans RVs For All Four Seasons?

Broadly speaking, the Leisure Travel Van models are four-season capable due to their superior construction and the quality materials used during the manufacturing stages.

Additionally, the Leisure Travel Van RV company’s models also come with adequate heating and cooling systems that allow for comfortable all-season travel.

However, the luxury models are not as equipped for cold weather as some other Class C motorhomes currently available.

The company does include an antifreeze kit for winter travel to ensure the motorhome’s pipes don’t freeze.

Additionally, the two models available come with 15000 BTU air conditioners. Moreover, the insulation and engineered construction ensure the models are cool in summer and warm in winter.

Changes for 2024.

Each Unity motorhome is built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 cab chassis. This gives it an aerodynamic profile and a powerful engine. These models also have advanced safety features that will improve your control and shorten your reaction time.

The Unity brand has been around for a few years now, but Leisure Travel Vans is always looking for ways to build upon its success. In 2024, a few features will be removed while others will be added. Some of the discontinued features include:

  • 3.2 kW Onan Diesel Generator with Auto Start and Auto Changeover Switch
  • Dual 6-V AGM Coach Batteries
  • HDMI Switch Box
  • Removable Carpeted Floor Mats
  • Smart Blu-ray Player

It might seem like a shame to lose these amenities. But they’re being removed to make space for bigger and better upgrades! For each item that’s being removed, two more will be added.

The 2024 Unity FX will include exciting features like Smart TVs, combination outlets for USB-C and USB-A devices, dual lithium coach batteries, a new pantry rack system, and much more! Some floor plans have new configurations for their dinettes as well.

Decoration options

The amenities and gadgets aren’t the only things that are getting a facelift for 2024. Buyers will also have the opportunity to customize the color scheme and decoration to suit their preferences! You can choose the look of both the interior and the exterior.

There are several options and combinations to explore, so let’s take a closer look.

Buyers will have the freedom to customize the style of their upholstery, cabinetry, and countertops. Most RV designers create specific design packs where you have to pair one color with another. But you’re free to mix and match with the Unity FX and other floor plans.

The upholstery is made from Ultrafabrics™, and the colors include Dove (off-white), Sand (warm gray), and Clay (dark, cool gray). You can pair these with a choice of four cabinetry colors.

To contrast the gray color schemes, the cabinetry uses warmer, more natural tones. The cabinetry choices are White Oak, Rift Oak, and Mocha. A pure white option is also available if you want to upgrade to the Bianco White FENIX®.

Finally, you can select from one of two countertop types. There’s Antarctica (bright white with small specks of gray) or Concrete (warm gray with darker flecks). These colors are gorgeous but fairly neutral, so they can easily blend with any combination.

The interior of your vehicle is important when it comes to your personal style and comfort, but the exterior makes a statement to the world! That’s why the Unity lineup has eight different exterior paint options to choose from.

They’re all fairly sleek and minimalistic, but a simple change in color can make a big difference. The color options for 2024 include:

  • Euro Sport : White body, black accents
  • Silver : Light gray body, silver accents
  • Graphite : Light gray body, dark gray accents
  • Shadow : Silver body, black accents
  • Glacier : Silver body, blue/gray accents
  • Atlantic Blue : White body, blue accents
  • White Suede : White body, cream accents
  • Champagne : Cream body, black accents

Floor plans

In addition to all the benefits above, customers also can choose from a variety of floor plans. The Unity FX is one of the most popular options, but there is a layout that’s perfect for everyone.

Six different floor plans are available for 2024, so peruse the options below and see which one catches your eye. Additional details on each layout can be found at leisurevans.com .

Murphy Bed Lounge: $201,580

This first floor plan is a wonderfully versatile design. The main sleeping space is a Murphy bed, which can fold up during the day and act as a dinette/sitting space. This bed sits next to the main kitchen counter, which has an interesting tapered storage cabinet overhead.

The rear of this design is occupied by a lovely bathroom. It features a curved corner shower, a toilet, a sink, a vanity, and a spacious storage closet. This floor plan is adaptable and stylish all at once!

Murphy Bed: $193,520

The next layout is somewhat similar, but it has a few key differences. Like the first design, this one features a Murphy bed as the main sleeping area. However, this one reveals a single sofa when it’s not in use. The adjacent kitchenette also has an L-shaped design, so it fits neatly into the corner.

A rear bathroom rounds out the space here. It has a corner shower as well, but the vanity is set flush against the wall rather than at an angle. There’s also plenty of storage space in here for clothing or linens.

FX: $191,180

Now it’s time to talk about the Unity FX! This is a gorgeous and innovative design that maximizes the space and ensures that there’s plenty of room for cooking, sleeping, and relaxation. It has the same Murphy bed setup as the floor plan above, so it can be a bed or a sofa.

The kitchenette and the main appliances sit across from this area, while the rear portion is split between a bathroom and an L-shaped sofa. If you want a place to work, chat, or stretch out, this additional sofa is perfect for any occasion. The design is unique because it manages to fit two living spaces into a single compact vehicle.

Corner Bed: $188,840

Murphy beds are perfectly fine, but sometimes you want to have a permanent bed that doesn’t require any setup. In this case, consider the Corner Bed floor plan! The back portion of this layout is split between the bedroom and bathroom.

The bed is in a cozy nook with storage cabinets on all sides. The edge of the bed is rounded, just like the bathroom wall, so they create an interesting shape together! This layout also features a booth-style dinette with overhead storage cabinets. The dinette sits in a slideout, which faces the kitchenette and the main appliances.

Rear Lounge: $190,390

If you want a unique floor plan that makes great use of space, the rear lounge is the option for you. When you enter the vehicle, you’ll immediately see the L-shaped kitchenette and a pair of opposing seats that can convert into a dinette.

A short hallway gives you access to a split bathroom design. The shower sits against one wall, while a separate section contains the sink, vanity, and toilet. Finally, the rear of the vehicle contains an L-shaped sofa, which can lower into a Murphy bed. It’s a nice private area to relax and unwind.

Twin Bed: $186,370

Last but not least, we have the Twin Bed design. This is the most affordable option, and it also offers the highest sleeping capacity! As the name implies, a pair of twin beds occupies the rear half of the layout. These have rounded edges, and there’s a shared nightstand/storage area in the middle. Storage cabinets line every wall in the rear.

The front section is similar to the design we described above. There’s a split bathroom, a kitchenette, and a pair of seats. However, in this design, the seats can turn into a second bed if you have the right equipment! This doubles your sleeping capacity.

To view these floor plans in more detail, visit the Leisure Travel Vans website .

Insider Today

Leisure Travel Vans has created a 2021 version of its Unity RV starting at $138,460.

Leisure Travel Vans specializes in creating Class C RVs on two ever-popular camper van chassis : the Ford Transits and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. The Unity specifically is built on a 170-inch Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 chassis that is powered by a three-liter V6 BlueTEC diesel engine, allowing the tiny home on wheels to achieve 16 to 18 miles-per-gallon.

According to Leisure Vans , Unity's exterior was made to look "clean, stylish, and aerodynamic", which is achieved through several design details of the van, such as its frameless windows. This crisp appearance is also carried into the interior, which has a modern look and semi-customizable complimentary colors.

While there are minimal aesthetic changes between the 2020 and 2021 Unity build, the 2021 refreshment has several new standard features, such as a flip-down towel bar in the shower, latches on the exterior storage compartments, a magnetic accessory strip, and new dinette seats that make room for an optional inflatable bed.

Keep scrolling to learn about the 2021 Unity, which is paired with the 2020 photos due to the small number of aesthetic changes:

The van has a width of seven feet, 11 inches, and a height of 10 feet, 6 inches including the air conditioning unit.

The body of the vehicle itself is comprised of aluminum walls, insulated floors, and fiberglass roof.

For cooking on the road, Unity's kitchen comes equipped with a refrigerator-freezer, sink, cooktop and several storage cabinets.

There's also an optional exterior table that allows passengers to dine on the Unity kitchen-made meals outside of the van.

The RV comes equipped with LED and accent lights to brighten up the interior.

All of this is powered by a 2,000-watt inverter, two 6-volt coach batteries, and a water filtration system.

The driver and passenger seats are both heated and can swivel to face the interior of the van, allowing them to serve as extra seats at the dining table for certain floor plans.

Its makers also included "upgraded" safety features, like lane-keep and active brake assistance.

Leisure Travel Vans offers different upholstery and cabinet colors that allow the interior to be semi-customizable.

For example, clients can pick between Cherry, Espresso Brown, or Sierra Maple colored wood cabinets for all of the Unity floor plans …

The exterior paint color can also be changed to colors like Glacier, Denim, and Europe Sport, to name a few options.

The van has six different floor plans with varying specs, amenities, and bed sizes and locations.

The first floor plan, the $138,460 Island Bed, offers a 58-inch by 74-inch bed by the rear of the RV lined that's lined with storage units and wardrobes.

The Island Bed layout can seat four people and sleep up to two while still offering up to 63 cubic feet of exterior storage.

The layout also includes details like a pass-through storage compartment that has both interior and exterior access, and a chaise lounge by the front of the RV that can also be used as the dining area.

The $138,915 Twin Bed floor plan unsurprisingly has two 34-inch by 76-inch twin beds with under-bed storage.

The two beds can also be combined into an 88-inch by 76-inch king bed, allowing the build to seat four and sleep two.

The $141,385 Corner Bed layout can seat and sleep four people with its 52-inch by 76-inch bed and dinette area that can convert into a second slumber spot.

There's also a subwoofer to accompany the standard soundbar.

The dual seat and table lounge system, which is accessible when the Murphy bed isn't in use, can be configured into six different layouts

The $143,725 FX takes a different approach with its floor plan by including a 68-inch by 76-inch Murphy bed, lounge seating that can convert into a daybed, and a couch in the rear with an ottoman that can be extended upwards to create a desk.

where are leisure travel vans made

This allows the van to sleep and seat up to two people while still including 34 cubic feet of exterior storage.

The $142,935 Rear Lounge comes with floor-to-ceiling windows, an optional inflatable bed by the front of the RV …

… and a rear lounge area with a sectional sofa that can turn into the bedroom when the 57-inch by 75-inch Murphy bed is lowered.

This allows the unit to sleep and seat four people, but also offers the least amount of exterior storage: 30 cubic feet.

The beginning.

P.W. Enns, founder of Triple E, operated a plumbing and heating business in Winkler, Manitoba. While serving on a volunteer trip in Elkhart, Indiana, P.W. realized an opportunity in travel trailer manufacturing within Canada. In 1965, he enlisted his two sons-in-law, Peter Elias and Phil Ens, and together they manufactured their first travel trailer. Triple E was incorporated on October 17, 1965.

In 1966, 97 Compact trailers were built and in the following year 327 trailers were built to meet the demands of Expo 67 in Montréal.

Canada's first motorhome prototype.

Canada’s first motorhome prototype, “The Caravan” was constructed on a salvaged Ford Truck Chassis. Built on a 1-tonne pickup, the prototype was constructed to be 22 feet in length, fully equipped with toilet facilities, hot and cold running water, shower, oven, refrigerator and wall-to-wall carpeting.

Acquisition of Triple E.

Vancouver-based entrepreneur, Jim Pattison, of Neonex Leisure Products, acquired a controlling interest in Triple E in 1969. Pattison was acquiring Canadian RV manufacturers and Triple E welcomed his business expertise and marketing skills to aid in its rapid growth.

The original motorhome chassis.

In 1970, P.W. sought out to build a motorhome on a GM chassis. With no chassis’s in GM’s lineup suitable for a motorhome addition, P.W. modified a GM truck chassis to create his vision. One year later, GM introduced a RV chassis utilizing similar engineering modifications.

Fire destroys the entire operation.

Fire spread through the factory destroying the entire operation, tragically claiming the life of General Manager, Henry Schellenberg of the Motorhome division.

Staff dedication.

75 staff were laid off and the company contemplated shutting its doors. It was the dedication, loyalty and work ethic of these 75 staff that would characterize the Triple E community. The staff called a meeting with management and offered their labour, free of charge, to re-build the plant.

Triple E Canada restored.

In 1974, during the economic downturn and two years after fire destroyed the Triple E plant, Phil Ens & P.W. bought back the company from Jim Pattison. Triple E Canada was restored to family ownership. Phil Ens became president and CEO, and P.W. became chairman of the board.

Leisure Travel Vans begins.

Leisure Travel Vans was founded in 1978 by Reg and Saide Harder in Gretna, Manitoba.

Guelph expansion.

A plant to build conversion vans was started in 1979 in Guelph, Ontario to fill a need in the market.

Purchase of Skylark RV.

In the same year Triple E acquired Skylark Recreational Vehicles Ltd, located in Lethbridge Alberta. The Lethbridge plant manufactured a full line of class A, class C, travel trailers and fifth wheels. Production was later consolidated into the Triple E manufacturing facilities in Winkler, Manitoba. The Skylark brand “Empress” would soon be one of Triple E’s most successful product brands.

International expansion.

Triple E expanded internationally targeting countries including Germany, Sweden, Holland, Norway and Japan; in the same year the Guelph, Ontario plant was moved to Winkler as a separate entity, Triple E Van Conversions Ltd.

Launch of the Empress.

The Triple E Empress SE was launched in Canada in 1988. The bold new aerodynamic design featured a 45-degree sloped windshield for increased visibility. An interior and exterior re-design created an abundance of storage space. Climate Guard offered true winterization, with heated water tanks and storage areas.

25th anniversary.

Triple E celebrated their 25th Anniversary in 1990. The company’s product line up included the Empress, the Empress SE, and the Regency. In 1990 the Class C Regency continued to gain popularity. The Regency offered all the amenities, design and features that a Class A offered, in a more compact unit, including Climate Guard four season comfort.

Topaz fifth wheel.

In 1995, the Topaz Fifth Wheel was introduced offering a more affordable towable product into the Canadian market. The Topaz featured six different floorplan configurations with the quality and craftsmanship that Triple E was known for.

Redesigned Empress.

Triple E launched the redesigned Empress – larger in size and featured a Freightliner rear-engine diesel chassis. This re-design, popular within the industry, enabled the entrance door to be located at the front of the unit, rather than midship, creating the aesthetically pleasing bus style look. The Empress became Triple E’s flagship model in 2000 and was shown at the National RV show that year in Louisville, Kentucky.

The first Mercedes-Benz Class B.

In 2002, Leisure Travel Vans was the first North American manufacturer to produce a Class B Motorhome on the 21.5 foot Mercedes Benz Sprinter 2500 Cargo Van.

40th anniversary.

In 2005 Triple E celebrated their 40th Anniversary and held a customer rally featuring the full lineup of products – Class A & C Motorhomes, Travel Trailers and Fifth Wheels.

The Serenity.

In 2005, Leisure Travel Vans created the Widebody Freedom 2 Serenity, built on the Mercedes Benz Sprinter 3500 cab chassis. Inspired by the sleek body lines and design of the automotive industry, the Freedom 2 Serenity featured a full fibreglass body, a separate sleeping area, and a bathroom equipped with a full corner shower, toilet, sink and vanity.

Launch of the Regency GT.

Triple E launches the Regency GT on the Ford E-450 – a smaller motorhome in the B+ market, marketed to the retail consumer looking for a smaller, more versatile vehicle.

Triple E acquires Leisure Travel Vans.

Triple E acquired Leisure Travel Vans, a class B van manufacturer located in Morden, Manitoba just 7 miles down the road from the Triple E.

Launch of the Empress Elite.

In the same year Triple E launched the Empress Elite A4301 43-foot motorhome. This flagship model featured a Freightliner tag axle chassis with a 500 horsepower engine, solid wood cabinetry, four slide outs and was capable of four season living.

An industry first.

In 2009, Triple E launched the “ Unity ” by Leisure Travel Vans – the industry’s first class C motorhome with a queen size Murphy Bed. Built on a Mercedes-Benz chassis, the Unity quickly became recognized as one of Triple E’s most innovative product introductions.

Consolidation.

In 2010, the RV division completed its consolidation of Triple E RV and Leisure Travel Vans into one operation. As a result of the economic state of the RV manufacturing industry in North America during the great recession, Triple E made the decision to discontinue Class A, travel trailer and fifth wheel production and focus on the Class B and C markets – all products would be constructed on a motorized chassis, streamlining production.

Free Spirit SS.

In 2012, Leisure Travel Vans released the Free Spirit SS, a Sprinter Van chassis featuring a built-in slide-out. This innovative floorplan proved to be another very successful product innovation.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

where are leisure travel vans made

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

where are leisure travel vans made

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

where are leisure travel vans made

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

where are leisure travel vans made

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

where are leisure travel vans made

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
