Western Mass contains a number of charming country stores that will engage shoppers of any age. Enjoy vintage kitchen items, country gifts, gadgets and goodies. Chicopee's King Ward Coach Lines deliver 21st century amenities to bus tour, travel groups

CHICOPEE - Trips to see New York City, a Boston Red Sox game or Mohegan Sun are ultramodern with King Ward Coach Lines as they offer 21st century amenities and service.

Located at 70 Justin Ave. in Chicopee, King Ward Coach Lines offers customers a range of vehicles for their transportation needs with a fleet of buses outfitted with free wi-fi service, DVD systems and more.

Owner Dennis King says he and his staff take pride in what they offer for the community. "We like to give people a good product for a good price," he said. "I feel our buses are top-of-the-line, very well maintained and always clean."

Operating with more than 70 employees who manage operations, sales and keep their fleet in tip-top running order, King Ward Coach Lines has built its business with strong family roots.

Between 1987 and 1989, King's father, Robert King, and his partner, Russ Ward, began the business venture. Ward died in 1994, and Dennis King began working with his father after returning home from service with the U.S. Coast Guard. Robert King retired in 2003, and Dennis King then bought the family business.

"Russ's wife, Jan, works with us along with her grandson, Geoff, and three of my nephews are mechanics," King added.

When King Ward first opened, King says his father and Ward had two buses, both of which were known for breaking down. With perseverance and hard work, the company has grown tremendously over the years, offering more and more services to customers. King Ward runs a daily service to Mohegan Sun, but is also known for its tour programs.

"We also have a retail program that arranges pre-packaged tours, including NASCAR trips, to visiting the Bronx Zoo in New York City," Ward said.

King Ward also transports student athletes from Springfield College, Western New England University, American International College and Elms College. "We transport teams to and from their games. We even transport the Springfield Falcons," he added, referring to Springfield's AHL hockey team.

Apart from the pre-packaged tours and college athletics work, King Ward has a variety of vehicles to meet virtually any need for customers, from rides to the airport to regional tours or more far-flung destinations. Three of their coaches are equipped with wheelchair lifts; those coaches have been helping transport World War II veterans from the Soldiers' Home in Holyoke during their Honor Flight trips to Washington, D.C., one of the community service efforts undertaken by King Ward.

Looking ahead to the future, King Ward is concentrating more focus on their retail tours, according to King.

"I've seen groups where it's difficult to get 50 or more people together on the same schedule. With our retail programs, you can check out our offerings," he added. "We organize the trip, and it takes the hassle away from you."

King credits his business success to the people working for the company. "We have a very good sales staff and operations, drivers, and our mechanics are second to none. The night crew works tirelessly to service and clean the buses; they are always freshly washed," Ward said.

Do you book group travel for churches, schools or other organizations.

You leave all the worries to someone else. We do all the planning. You just sit back and relax on the comfortable buses. With a trip on your own, you would have to worry about parking, getting hotels, attraction tickets, etc. We do all that for you!

New York City FAQ

Should i still contact us to sign up even if it says no seats available.

YES!  Even if  it says we are full and no seats available,  most likely there will be some that will have to drop out before deposits are due or some may not pay deposit before deadline. In either case you will likely be then added to the trip. If it says there are no seats available and you wish to go, let me know this and I will put you on the waiting list. Once we have dropouts, you will be added based on the order in which you apply (first on the waiting list get first call). Last year I had a long waitlist and everyone that wanted ended up getting in. Can't promise that will happen every time, but there is a good chance it will.

How are rates for children 6-16 calculated

   To get this rate there must be 2 other people in the room that pay the double rate. For example: In a room with 1 adult and one child, both must pay the double rate.  In a room with 1 adult and 2 children, the adult and 1 child would pay the double rate and the other child gets the reduced rate. In a room with 2 adults and 2 children, the adults pay the double rate and both children get the reduced rate. In a room with 3 adults and one child, the adults pay the triple rate and the child gets the reduced rate. In a room with 1 adult and 3 children, the adult and one child would pay the double rate and the other 2 children get the reduced rate. 

What if I want to attend a Broadway Play or take a carriage ride in Central Park?

  If you want to attend a Broadway Play, you can go to the discount Kiosk

and help you purchase same day tickets to most plays. The app "TKTS" would be helpful to download. If you want to attend one of the most popular Plays that may not be available at the kiosk, you may need to order those tickets in advance before arrival. The plays included in this category would likely include ones such as Lion King, Wicked and Hamilton.

When we arrive at Central Park, I will help you procure a carriage for a guided tour through the park if you wish to do that.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.
