Stephen Ames opened and closed his final round with eagles to solidify his victory in the 2023 Boeing Classic, his fourth PGA Tour Champions win of the season.

Nursing a one-shot lead over the 2022 Boeing Classic Champion Miguel Angel Jimenez and defending Schwab Cup Champion Steven Alker entering the final round, the 59-year-old Ames fired a bogey-free, 9-under 63 to win by seven strokes.

Ames matched the tournament record at 19-under 197 at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge. He closed out his Sunday by playing his last five holes in 6 under to shoot 30 on the back nine.

Miguel Angel Jiminez

Miguel Angel Jimenez won the 2022 Boeing Classic for his third PGA TOUR Champions victory of the season, closing with a 5-under 67 to hold off David McKenzie by two strokes. Jimenez, tied for the lead with Billy Andrade entering the round, birdied five of the first 12 holes and parred the last six. The 58-year-old Spanish star finished at 15-under 201 at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge.

Rod Pampling

Rod Pampling won the 2021 Boeing Classic for his first PGA TOUR Champions victory when Jim Furyk and Woody Austin failed to get up-and-down for birdie from greenside bunkers on the par-5 18th.

Pampling, playing five groups ahead of Furyk and Austin at Snoqualmie Ridge, shot a 6-under 66 to finish at 12-under 204. In the clubhouse as the leader, he waited out the last groups from the driving range as his score held up. He opened eagle-birdie and then posted birdies on Nos. 7, 9, 11, 12 and 14. The 51-year-old Australian won three times on the PGA TOUR, the last in 2017 in Las Vegas, and has two PGA TOUR of Australasia wins.

Brandt Jobe

Brandt Jobe came back from a seven stroke deficit entering the final round to win the 2019 Boeing Classic. Jobe finished at 18 under, three shots ahead of Tom Pernice Jr., who shot a final-round 65. Fred Couples finished in third for the fourth time in eight appearances in his hometown tournament.

Jobe posted a 9-under 63 Sunday to win his second PGA TOUR Champions title, the other being the 2017 Principal Charity Classic. He started the final round with a flurry, recording seven birdies in his first nine holes to charge up the leaderboard. A birdie on #14 gave him the lead and two more birdies on #17 and #18 closed out his victory.

Scott Parel

Scott Parel wins the 14th annual Boeing Classic to claim his first PGA Tour Champions win. Parel put the tournament away with birdies on 16 and 17. He shot a nine-under par 63, a career best on the PGA Tour Champions, that was four shots better than anyone who finished in the top 10 and nine strokes better than the 36-hole leaders, Kevin Sutherland and senior tour rookie Ken Tanigawa.

Jerry Kelly

Fan favorite Jerry Kelly wins the 13th annual Boeing Classic to claim his first PGA Tour Champions title. The newcomer held off stiff competition from Jerry Smith to secure the victory by one stroke. Kelly had a tournament record 19-under 197 total at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge.

Bernhard Langer

Bernhard Langer emerged victorious after a three-way playoff with Woody Austin and Kevin Sutherland. The German star took advantage of Austin and Sutherland both finding bunkers on the 18th in the playoff. Langer won for the fourth time this season and posted his 29th win on the PGA TOUR Champions, tying him for second with Lee Trevino on the career list. Bernhard Langer also won the Boeing Classic in 2010.

Billy Andrade

Making the most of his first appearance at the Boeing Classic, Billy Andrade held off several golfers to win the 11th Annual Tournament. Andrade shot 73 in the final round for a cumulative total score of 207. The 73 is the highest final round score by a Boeing Classic Champion, and the three-round total of 207 ties the tournament record for highest cumulative total by the winner. It was Andrade’s first PGA TOUR Champions title in an individual stroke-play event, and it was his first professional tour victory since 2000.

Scott Dunlap

It was another exciting finish at the 10th Anniversary of the Boeing Classic as Scott Dunlap beat out Mark Brooks in a sudden-death playoff to earn the 2014 Boeing Classic title. This was the fifth time in ten years a champion was decided in a playoff, making Sunday at the Boeing Classic a must-see event year after year!

John Riegger

John Riegger held off some of professional golf’s most notable names — among them, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, John Cook and Seattle native Fred Couples — to finish with a 15-under total of 201 and earn the title of Champion of the 2013 Boeing Classic.

In only his fifth Champions Tour start since turning 50 in June, Riegger had every reason to be nervous as the impressive field pursued him throughout Sunday’s final round. He began the day with a three-shot lead, but a shaky front nine left him trailing Langer, the Hall of Famer, by one shot. The back nine though was another story, where he persevered and then thrived with birdies on three of his last four holes to finish with a 68 and two strokes ahead of the field.

30,000 fans crowded around the 18th green to celebrate Riegger’s win, tying the tournament record for a Championship Sunday crowd, and the Tournament Week total of 86,000 established a new Boeing Classic attendance record.

Jay Don Blake

The Boeing Classic has become synonymous with thrilling finishes and this year was no different, as Jay Don Blake outlasted Mark O’Meara on the second playoff hole to become the 2012 Boeing Classic Champion. For the fourth time in eight years the tournament was decided in a playoff and 28,000 fans crowded around the 18th Green to join in on the excitement.

On the first playoff hole, Blake missed a short birdie putt first, giving O’Meara a chance at the title. But his 8-footer slid right of the hole and sent the duo to a second playoff hole. Playing No. 18 for the third time on the day, O’Meara pulled his second shot into the rough left of the green and his pitch checked up short. Blake’s second shot went into the rough behind the green, but his pitch nearly went in, leaving him with a tap-in birdie. O’Meara wasn’t able to find the hole on his birdie, giving Blake his third Champions Tour win in the last two years.

Mark Calcavecchia

Mark Calcavecchia recorded his first win on the Champions Tour with his victory at the 2011 Boeing Classic, holding off Russ Cochran with a two-putt birdie on the first Playoff hole in front of a record 30,000 fans at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge. A 13-time winner on the PGA Tour, Calcavecchia went head-to-head with Cochran on Sunday as both players shot 7-under 65s to finish at 14-under. It was Calcavecchia though who made the big shots when he needed them most and provided yet another thrilling finish to cap the most the most successful event in tournament history.

Bernhard Langer shot a 3-under-par 69 on Sunday to win the Boeing Classic by three strokes over Nick Price and tied the tournament record with a three-round total of 198.

Loren Roberts

Second-round co-leader Loren Roberts birdied the final two holes to steal the 2009 Boeing Classic title. Roberts outlasted Mark O’Meara by nearly matching his sterling tee shot at 17 and dribbled in a 5-foot birdie putt. On No. 18, Roberts birdied the uphill final hole with a short pitch shot to 3 feet and dropped the putt for his third victory this season. Roberts shot a 7-under 65 in the final round and set a new tournament record at 18 under

The 59-year-old naturalized Canadian citizen from Trinidad shot a 9-under 63 at Snoqualmie Ridge in Washington for a seven-stroke victory over defending champion Miguel Ángel Jiménez of Spain.

"Just kind of freewheeling it a little bit," Ames said after playing the final five holes in 6 under. "I hit the shots that I needed to hit coming down the end and everything just clicked."

The Vancouver resident matched the tournament record at 19-under 297 after opening with consecutive 67s to take a one-stroke lead into the final round.

Stephen Ames takes Boeing Classic lead, but many have a chance in final round

SNOQUALMIE — Buckle up golf fans. The final round of the Boeing Classic figures to be a wild ride.

Stephen Ames, looking for his fourth win of the season at age 59, shot a 5-under-par 67 at the Club at Snoqualmie Ridge on Saturday to take the lead entering Sunday’s final round at 10-under 134.

But many others still have a chance. Just one shot back are defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez, looking to become the first player to win this event in back-to-back years, and Steven Alker.

Kevin Sutherland, twice a runner-up in the Boeing Classic, and PGA Tour Champions Tour rookie Tim O’Neal are two shots back at 8 under.

Twelve players are within five shots of the lead, including World Golf Hall of Famers Vijay Singh (6 under), Bernhard Langer (5 under) and Ernie Els (5 under).

Seattle native Fred Couples, also a Hall of Famer, is on the fringes of contention, tied for 13th at 4 under — six shots back — after a 1-under 71.

They will all be chasing Ames, who has won five times on the 50-years-and-older tour. He said he usually does not putt well on West Coast greens, “but I’ve putted very nicely here this week.”

Ames said he does not mind having the pressure of leading entering the final round.

“It doesn’t bother me,” he said. “I’m just going to stick with my process. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t.”

Alker made seven birdies in his final 12 holes to shoot a 66. He missed a three-foot birdie putt on 18th that would have given him a share of the lead.

“It wasn’t a bad putt,” he said of the miss on the 18th. “I had my line and it just kind of jumped on me a little bit. What can you do? Just put it in the bank and let’s go tomorrow.”

Couples, playing in his first tournament in two months after undergoing hernia surgery, began the day tied for sixth after an opening-round 69.

“I’m actually doing OK,” Couples said. “I’m chipping and putting well — the putting is not crazy but it’s not bad — and I’m getting it up and down and I’m driving it better. The problem is every now and then I think I’m feeling pretty good and I try to carry a bunker.”

Couples will need card a low round Sunday to have a chance to win this event for the first time.

“If I miss all the junk and make every putt, yeah, I could maybe shoot 4 under,” he said.

Even with tough pin placements this week, he might need a couple shots lower than that on what figures to be an entertaining Sunday.

Couples made history earlier this year when he became the oldest player to make the cut at the Masters. He has been using a cart in Champions Tour events because of the hernia, but walked all 72 holes at Augusta National.

“It was amazing,” he said. “I finally had this hernia surgery and I’m still not walking yet. I just don’t feel well enough, but at Augusta, wow.”

Couples won by six shots last October in North Carolina, two weeks after turning 63, shooting a final-round 60. That, and Langer winning twice at 65 this year, gives Couples hope that he will have more legitimate chances to win this event.

“I’m a little sporadic, but when I hit it really well, I can compete with anyone at my age,” Couples said before hurrying off to see Felix Hernandez’s Mariners Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

  • O’Neal, who leads the Champions Tour in average driving distance (304.1 yards), said his length has helped him but the key for him this week has been his work on the greens. “You still have to hit it straight and you’ve still got to make putts,” said O’Neal, 51, whose best finish on the Champions Tour was a tie for 10th in May.
  • Davis Love III withdrew from the tournament before the start of the second round, citing an illness. He opened with a 70 on Friday but was 3 over on his final three holes to fall four shots behind.
  • Pullman High School graduate Kirk Triplett, playing in the event for the ninth time, shot a 69 Saturday and is tied for 20th at 2 under.
  • Four of the past six winners of the Boeing Classic have started the final round in a tie for fifth place or lower.

How to watch 2024 John Deere Classic

Springer shoots 14th sub-60 round in tour history, 2024 open championship odds, scheffler picks, best bets, hayden springer posts 14th sub-60 round in pga tour history with his eagle-birdie finish for a 59.

SILVIS, Ill. (AP) Hayden Springer posted the 14th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history on Thursday, joining a rapidly expanding list with an eagle-birdie finish in the John Deere Classic for a 12-under 59.

All that got him was a two-shot lead over Sami Valimaki on a rain-softened TPC Deere Run so vulnerable to scoring that only 13 players in the 156-man field were over par.

Springer shot 27 on the front nine and tried to block out thoughts of a 59 or better. Then he made five straight pars and figured the chance had passed until he holed a 55-yard shot for eagle on the par-5 17th.

Needing a birdie for golf's magic number, his approach caught the slope and left him 12 feet short, and the putt was true all the way.

“Kind of at a loss for words in terms of being able to do that,” Springer said. “I feel like that's one of the rare things in golf, so to have that opportunity and pull it off, it feels pretty special.”

The PGA Tour record is a 58 by Jim Furyk at the Travelers Championship in 2016. Furyk also is among 13 players with a 59.

Any score that starts with a 5 remains special, although it is not quite as rare as it once was as players get better each year. Springer became the second player in three weeks to break 60. Cameron Young also had a 59 at the Travelers Championship.

On golf tours worldwide, it was the eighth sub-60 round. The lowest was a 57 by Cristobal del Solar of Chile in a Korn Ferry Tour event in Colombia.

Springer tied the record at the TPC Deere Run. Paul Goydos shot a 59 in the first round of the John Deere Classic in 2010. Goydos had only a one-shot lead that year - Steve Stricker shot 60 the same day and went on to win.

Valimaki, playing in the afternoon, noticed Springer's 59 as he played the front nine.

“I think it was my seventh hole,” Valimaki said. “I was like, ‘OK, I need to keep shooting lower and lower.’ Didn't catch it, but still a good round.”

Eric Cole had a 62, while the group at 63 included Florida State sophomore Luke Clanton, who tied for 10th last week in the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Lucas Glover, on the wrong side of the postseason bubble with five weeks to go before the FedEx Cup playoffs, shot 64.

Players were allowed to lift, clean and place their golf balls in the short grass.

Still, Springer had reason to believe early on this might be a special day. He holed a 12-foot eagle putt on the second hole and chipped in from 60 feet for birdie on the next one. He birdied the next three holes, and then closed out the front nine with birdie putts of 3 feet and 7 feet.

It was the birdie putt from 15 feet on the fringe on the sixth hole that got him thinking how low he could go.

“I was like, ‘OK, I feel like I'm not missing today. I'm pretty much holing any putt I look at,'” he said. “So probably that putt going in was kind of the trigger of, ‘OK, we might be able to go super low.’”

Springer had missed five straight cuts, putting him in danger of losing his card. He played a Korn Ferry Tour event during the week of the U.S. Open - he tied for 54th - and spent time with his longtime swing coach before registering a tie for 10th last week in Detroit.

If that was progress, then this was a giant leap.

But then, Springer already knows about handling the toughest of times. His infant daughter, Sage, was diagnosed in 2021 with Trisomy 18 - also known as Edwards Syndrome - in which babies are born with three copies of chromosome 18 instead of two.

Such infants typically don’t make it 72 hours. Sage was 3 when she died on Nov. 13, just a month before Springer faced Q-school. He had enough emotional capacity left to get his PGA Tour card, and now he's in the record book with a sub-60 round.

“I don’t know if it gives me inner strength, but definitely tests you and you kind of have to find ways to work through it and to continue to move forward,” Springer said. “Most of that is our faith for us, just leaning into that and knowing that we’re secure in that.

“We’ve had some challenging things happen,” he said. “But at the end of the day I also want to compete and I love doing that.”

Kevin Chappell was among those at 64. Conditions were so conducive to scoring that 12 players from the morning wave were at 65 or lower. Jordan Spieth was not among them. He had to scramble for a 69, and his first step Friday will be making the cut.

As for Springer, he became the fourth player on the PGA Tour with a 59 in the opening round. Justin Thomas (Sony Open in 2017) and Brandt Snedeker (Wyndham Championship in 2018) went on to win. The exception was Goydos at the John Deere Classic.
