REGENERATIVE TOURISM FOR HĀNA

We had the opportunity to speak with Kainoa Carlson with @hinowdaily back in February where we delved into the significance of embracing a responsible mindset when traveling. It is crucial for visitors to prioritize leaving their destination in a better condition than they found it and to seek immersive experiences that go beyond the typical Maui vacation.

One prime example of promoting sustainable and regenerative tourism on Maui is through legally guided tours on the road to Hana. These tours play a vital role in fostering a mindset of environmental responsibility and contribute to the preservation and enhancement of the local ecosystem. Every year, thousands of travelers embark on the breathtaking journey along the road to Hana, often utilizing their own private vehicles. We strongly encourage considering the option of taking a guided tour, as it serves as an effective means to minimize the impact of visitors on the road to Hana and the Hana community. By doing so, visitors actively contribute to the preservation of this remarkable route and the overall well-being of the local community.

"Emma was so great! We normally like to just do our own thing on vacation and this was our first time scheduling a guided tour. We weren't sure what to expect but this was the BEST part of our trip so far! Driving the Road to Hana on our own, we would have missed so much of the history and stories she told us which was the best part. Emma grew up there, knew literally everyone we passed (most were family) she was like a Hana celebrity 😂 We loved it.. Never seen anywhere like Hana, it was an amazing experience and I highly recommend!"

Description

Tour the Road to Hana in comfort and style with Hawaiian Style Tours, owned and operated by a local Hawaiian family. They extend first class hospitality and a level of service that is a step up from "regular" Hana tours! They offer luxury vehicles with air conditioning, leather seats, 3 point safety seat belts, and USB charging stations. They serve a light tropical breakfast of mango bread and pineapple skewers, and a catered hot lunch enjoyed at a flower farm. All-day beverages include iced coffee, bottled water and fruit juice. Each guest gets one of their souvenir HAwaiian-style logo backpacks with personal amenities. They even provide fresh towels for drying off at the swimming holes, and of course your day will be made special by a knowledgable local guide who will share the history and stories of this rainforest, and look after your safety during the day of adventure and sightseeing.

Hawaiian Style offers shared tours priced per person with a maximum capacity of 12 guests ... as well as private charters which are priced "per vehicle". If you would like to arrange a private charter in their 12 passenger coach it MUST be reserved a MONTH or more in advance! If they have already accepted bookings on a shared trip for your date, it wouldn't be available for a private charter.

Hana Tropical Rainforest is operated as a shared charter and is priced per person. This 10-12 hour excurions includes hotel pickup and as locals and native Hawaiians, your guide knows that there is more about this curvy road than its lush tropical beauty and they want you to learn about the history, the stories, and tales of this tropical rainforest that was once traveled by their ancestors. This tour completely circles the Hana side of the island and operates in the "opposite" direction from most other tour companies to help maximize the day. Offered Mondaythrough Friday. Minimum age on shared charters is 3.

Hana Tropical Rainforest Tour Rate (HSTT1)

$299.99 per Participant   (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

Private Charter in Cadillac Escalade is priced for the vehicle for the day for a 10-12 hour Hana Tropical Rainforest Tour. The vehicle capacity is 4 adults, or 4-5 depeding on size of guests. Available Monday through Saturday but must be reserved weeks in advance.

Private Hana Tour in Cadallac Escalade Rate (HSTT3)

$2,199.99 per Vehicle   (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

Private Charter in 12 Passenger Coach is priced for the vehicle for the day for a 10-12 hour Hana Tropical Rainforest Tour. Available Monday through Saturday but must be reserved weeks in advance. If there are already seats sold on a shared trip, the date won't be avaialble for a private charter.

Private Hana Tour in 12 Passenger Coach Rate (HSTT4)

$3,199.99 per Vehicle   (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

Pick Up: Offered at most Maui resorts.

Included in Tour: Light tropical breafast, hot catered lunch, all-day beverages, Hawaiian Style logo backpack with personal amenities, local guide.

What to Wear: Casual, comfortable attire. Bring bathing suit if you would like to swim in a waterfall. Towels are provided.

Reservations: Advanced reservations required. This event is "RESERVE NOW PAY LATER"; we need a credit card on file to finalize your reservation but we do not charge you for this reservation until a few days before the beginning of your vacation!

Minimum Notice for Cancellations / Changes: At least 48 hours before the start of the event. All tours go out rain or shine.

All companies that run Hana tours are going to include a knowledgable guide who is trained in the history of the area. The difference with Hawaiian Style tours is that this company is owned by Doug Chong, who grew up in the little Hawaiian village of Ke-anae (about halfway to Hana). His family still has roots there and they operate the fruit stand with the famous banana bread. When Doug is driving and he points at something, he isn't telling you things he learned, he is remembering things that he experienced. This unique local perspective will make all the difference in a tour of the Road to Hana.

The shared Hana Rainforest Tour goes all the way around the Haleakala side of the island; many tour companies have stopped doing that. One aspect of their itinerary that I think is a particularly smart idea is they do the tour in the opposite direction from most other companies. They start the day on the remote "back side" passing through the lava fields of Kanaio and the ranches of Kaupo, arriving in the Kipahulu district before any of the other tour vehicles have arrived there! It's nice to have this part of the tour all to yourself! They are going to pass most of the traffic coming the other way in the "downtown" Hana area, then they do the north shore rainforest stops in the afternoon. This approach means you spend less time in traffic, which can really pile up on the way to Hana in the early and mid-morning hours!

Their tours are a LITTLE more expensive than some other Road to Hana tours, but not MUCH more considering the added features and nice touches they provide. If there are four in your party, you might consider doing a private charter in their Cadillac Escalade for an ultra-exclusive private tour, and if there are 10-12 in your party, a Private Charter in their 12 passenger coach is about the same price per person as doing one of their shared tours!

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2025 and 2026

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is, in many ways, an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian Islands over seven days, with overnights at Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the Big Island. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (think: a race track, virtual reality gaming and waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's OK because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant and, at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse , Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go : This itinerary is ideal for anyone seeking a convenient way to island hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — as it makes the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or Hawaii Island, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai, plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a paina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to all-terrain-vehicle adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Maui's humpback whale season is typically from mid-January to March. If your cruise falls within that time frame, you might catch sight of them while cruising off the coast of Maui. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island via a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast, among other activities.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer, the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or water sports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying about who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go : The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. The itinerary is offered in 2025 and 2026 on 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 2,106-passenger Nieuw Amsterdam.

Cruisers who book these sailings must love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego to Honolulu and back requires 10 days. In between, passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the Big Island. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Both ships also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports will be required.

Travelers with more time can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. In 2025, Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary that combines visits to four Hawaiian Islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati, plus 20 sea days. Nieuw Amsterdam will sail that same itinerary in 2026.

Related: Holland America unveils another epic cruise — this time with a twist

Even longer itineraries are available aboard Zaandam. Choose between 51- and 56-night Tales of the South Pacific sailings that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia, along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock) — and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go : Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and enjoy a more traditional cruise experience will appreciate this itinerary. They should also love sea days as much as (or even more than) port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Vancouver, British Columbia, in fall and winter.

The sailings take place aboard 3,080-passenger Ruby Princess (from San Francisco), 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess (from Los Angeles), and 1,970-passenger Coral Princess (from Vancouver).

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours when visiting Hawaii Island (Hilo), Kauai and Maui; they stay for 16 hours during Oahu port calls. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required, plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues , including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up some sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go : These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line only offers two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii Island), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy these ships' chic, grown-up ambience and amenities. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine. Passengers aboard Celebrity Edge can enjoy the international Eden Restaurant and Fine Cut Steakhouse, among its many dining options.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go : The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially those in their 40s and 50s who are part of Generation X and within Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If a good time is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach, California) aboard 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other round trips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend four days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii Island. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, such as Guy's Burger Joint , Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express .

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, the Alchemy Bar and the WaterWorks aqua park. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go : Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities will likely enjoy this itinerary.

These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

The ship also offers 20 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland restaurant, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House. Fedex st. jude: morikawa’s playoff push starts with sustainable style.

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE - AUGUST 14: Collin Morikawa plays his shot on the 12th tee prior to the FedEx ... [+] St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind on August 14, 2024 in Memphis, Tennessee.

FedEx , the sponsor of the PGA Tour's season-long points race and playoffs which kickoff today in Memphis at TPC Southwind, teamed up with TaylorMade and design studio Ceeze to create a unique custom golf bag (pictured above) for two-time major winner Collin Morikawa to sport during the season’s homestretch.

Sporting the logistics giant’s purple, orange and white colors with side panels constructed out of upcycled golf gloves and repurposed packaging materials, the staff bag is equal parts club carrier and objet d'art. Morikawa, currently 4th in the FedEx Cup points standings, expressed his gratitude for the collaboration between his sponsor TaylorMade and the tour’s umbrella sponsor. He described his initial reaction upon seeing the bag as one of 'awe,' appreciating the effort that went into creating the one of a kind item.

“It definitely stands out and in order to make an impact and make a difference you have to stand out in a certain way and this bag not only stands out because of the colors that FedEx has but also how unique it is—we are so used to seeing the same bags week in and week out that when you have something new, people are curious about,” Morikawa said.

It’s not lost on the University of California at Berkley alum that the act of upcycling—repurposing materials that would otherwise be headed to the rubbish bin into higher-quality items—is a nod to greener and more sustainable practices.

“Look, that’s what our entire planet is about: to sustain and be thankful for what we have and also make an impact. With the sport we play—being out on grass, in nature and the amount of divots and ball marks we make while playing such amazing places—when you can be sustainable, whether that’s through your apparel or this golf bag with the amount of items reused, it’s very, very cool,” he said.

From the perspective of the title sponsor of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, debuting the custom gear in the company’s hometown event felt like a fitting way to showcase their presence.

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE - AUGUST 14: Collin Morikawa looks on from the 12th hole prior to the FedEx St. ... [+] Jude Championship at TPC Southwind on August 14, 2024 in Memphis, Tennessee.

“The bag provides an opportunity for FedEx to collaborate with top PGA Tour player Collin Morikawa, as well as TaylorMade, another iconic brand in golf, on a unique design that celebrates the FedExCup Playoffs,” Jenny Robertson, senior vice president of global brand and communications at FedEx, said.

With the shipping conglomerate donating $1,000 to St. Jude for every birdie or better he makes during the playoffs, Morikawa acknowledged that this added incentive may provide an extra push to go low.

“I hope it does and it's obviously more motivation to never give up. I’m not saying I ever do, but it’s always going to be in the back of your mind, that this is for a much better cause, so hopefully we can make a lot of those birdies,” he said.

Morikawa’s wife Katherine is getting set to toe the line at the New York City Marathon, a race that traverses all five of the Big Apple’s boroughs in the Fall. The charity she’ll be running for is also St. Jude and she’s been doing Collin proud with her dialed in training prep for what will be her first marathon.

“It’s been insane. She’s ramped it up and hired a coach a few months ago. She’s not taking this lightly—she wants to go out and race and run it as fast as possible. I’m extremely proud of her. When she puts her mind to something, she really does it to the best of her ability. She puts all her effort into it. I can see the training that goes into it is very similar to how we training for golf—it takes a lot of time out of your day, but she’s motivated, focused and I see the sweat and tears going into this. She is excited and hopefully we can raise a lot of money for St. Jude."

For the first round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship Morikawa is paired with three-time FedEx Cup Champ Rory McIlroy, who has earned $67 million in career playoff play, in the marquee group. The duo tee off later this morning at 10:45 a.m. ET and Collin is intent on putting his best foot forward and hitting the ground running.

“You have to be ready to take what’s in front of you. Nothing is going to be given in the playoffs, and nothing is going to come easy. Similar to how every birdie I make raises money for St. Jude, I’ve got to remember that it always comes down to a shot and you can never take anything for granted.”

He says the course suits his eye. In his last two outings in this tourney he finished T-13 and T-5. If he can conjure up his usual excellent middle iron play and combine green-finding panache with some flatstick magic, this very well could be Morikawa’s week.

“Tee to green, you’ve got to be able to strike it well. The way the grass is out here, the way you get flyers, being in the fairway is at a premium and there are smaller greens. But at the end of the day, you’ve got to be able to putt well and make birdies—it’s really an accumulation of everything.”

Chris Kirk cards 205-yard ace at No. 14 Thursday at FedEx St. Jude Championship

Change Text Size

Chris Kirk is kicking his FedExCup Playoffs campaign into high gear, and he’s doing so in style.

Kirk carded a hole-in-one at TPC Southwind’s par-3 14th hole during the first round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, playing a high draw from 205 yards that landed 10 feet short-right of the hole, bounced a few times and rolled gently into the center of the cup.

The ace moved Kirk to 7 under for his round, three strokes clear of the field at the time. It marked Kirk’s fourth career ace on TOUR and the first ace of the 2024 FedExCup Playoffs.

Kirk, 39, is no stranger to a FedExCup Playoffs run. The University of Georgia alum finished No. 2 on the 2014 FedExCup, his Playoffs campaign including a victory at the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston.

Kirk began the FedEx St. Jude Championship at No. 28 on the FedExCup standings, safely inside the critical top-50 cutoff to advance to next week’s BMW Championship and qualify for next season’s eight Signature Events. He’s hovering around the bubble for the top 30 after the BMW that qualify for the TOUR Championship, though, and a strong week in Memphis would go a long way toward securing his spot at East Lake.

Kirk began his season with a victory at The Sentry, his sixth career PGA TOUR title. He’s gearing up to chase a seventh this weekend in Memphis, propelled by a timely ace.

Historic Martin Mars water bomber completes final flight in B.C.

Renowned aircraft to be housed in b.c. aviation museum in north saanich on vancouver island.

A massive water bomber escorted by nine fighter jets ejecting plumes of smoke into the sky.

Thousands gathered at Patricia Bay Park on Vancouver Island north of Victoria on Sunday to witness the final landing of the historic Hawaii Martin Mars, a legendary aircraft that fought wildfires in B.C. for more than 50 years.

The massive aircraft, with a capacity to carry more than 27,000 litres of water, departed from its longtime base at Sproat Lake in Port Alberni and landed in Saanich Inlet, before heading to its new home at the B.C. Aviation Museum.

Nine Canadian Forces Snowbirds jets accompanied the water bomber on its last journey, passing over a number of communities en route to its final destination.

The Snowbirds bid farewell to the well known aircraft with a non-aerobatic display, drawing cheers from onlookers below.

Two elder pilots with headphones inside the cockpit turning back while posing for a photo.

"It's kind of sad that it's the end of the story," said Peter Killin, a longtime pilot who flew the Hawaii Martin Mars for the last time, along with Harbour Air's Rick Matthews, on Sunday.

Killin, who has logged more than 1,000 hours of flying time with the water bomber, said he was introduced to the aircraft in 2000 by Matthews and was then hired a year later to pilot the Mars and help fight forest fires.

"It's a new chapter coming [for the aircraft] ... it's going to be good, people will get to see it." he added.

Preserving history for future

Earlier this year, Coulson Aviation, the company that purchased the Hawaii Martin Mars in 2007, announced it is donating the aircraft to the B.C. Aviation Museum, calling it a "grand ending to a great history."

"It's bittersweet to say goodbye," Wayne Coulson, CEO of Coulson Aviation told CBC News.

Iconic Martin Mars water bomber set to arrive at B.C. museum

The water bomber will become the centrepiece of a new wildfire exhibition at the B.C. Aviation Museum in North Saanich starting Sept. 28.

Steve Nichol, president of the museum, said it will be "the jewel in the crown" of the museum's firefighting display.

"This is a once in a lifetime event," he said. "We're going to have it open every day for the public, just to see what it was like to be inside the Martin Mars. I think people will be fascinated by it."

  • Martin Mars water bomber to be 'centrepiece' in museum exhibit

The province says it has provided $250,000 to protect and preserve the aircraft as part of the exhibition.

Richard Mosdell, who led the "Save the Mars" project for the museum, said he still remembers the deep rumble of the aircraft echoing through the valleys as it soared overhead, battling forest fires — "that deep, throaty old piston engine sound that you really felt in your chest," he said during an interview with CBC's On The Coast.

He says the aircraft's history is rich and varied and should be preserved for future generations to observe and appreciate.

'A true aviation icon'

The Hawaii Mars was one of six prototypes produced by the U.S. navy in the 1940s for large-scale transport between the West Coast and Hawaii. But when aviation technology progressed, the planes were retired and put up for auction.

According to the province, the Mars was later converted to serve as the largest air ambulance during the Korean War, capable of carrying more than 120 soldiers and medical personnel in one trip.

In 1958, B.C.'s forest industry purchased four Mars and repurposed them into wildfire-fighting machines.

A red and white water bomber plane can be seen flying by with lakes, hills and forest below.

"It just has a grand history and it is a true aviation icon,"   Coulson said.

Over its operational life, the water bomber dropped about 190 million litres of water on wildfires, a feat Coulson claims makes it the most effective firefighting aircraft in history.

The aviation company retired the water bomber in 2015, and it has since remained at the company's home base on Sproat Lake in Port Alberni.

Coulson says the evolution of aviation and firefighting technology led to the planes' demise.

"[But] there will never be a better firefighting aircraft, no matter what anybody says," he said.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Receive a Warm, Cheesy Welcome to Kick Off Colombia Trip

hawaiian style tours

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle kicked off a tour of Colombia Thursday morning, starting their day with a visit to the office of Vice President Francia Márquez in Bogotá.

Upon arrival, the couple was greeted with hugs and a taste of pandebono, the country’s traditional cheese-filled bread. Márquez and her partner, Rafael Yerney Pinillo, visited with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for a half-hour, where they discussed the purpose of the couple’s visit, their commitment to online safety and raising awareness about the potential harms of social media.

In November , Márquez will host the world’s first Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children, which will highlight online safety, and during Thursday’s meeting, she told the couple that she believes they share the same goals when it comes to championing mental health and a better, safer digital future for children. According to Harper’s Bazaar , Márquez also told Harry of her admiration for his late mother, Princess Diana.

In a CBS interview that aired on August 4, Meghan explained that becoming a mother helped inspire her decision to focus on the issue of the effects that the internet can have on children. “Our kids are younger, three and five, and they’re amazing,” she said . “But all you want to do as parents is protect them, so as we can see what is happening in the online space, we know there’s a lot of work to be done there and we’re just happy to be a part of change for good.”

For the outing, Meghan wore a sleeveless navy top and matching slacks by Veronica Beard, along with black suede Manolo Blahnik heels, a white handbag by Loro Piana. Following the meeting with the vice president, Harry and Meghan headed to the Colegio Cultura Popular, a local school where they planned to meet with students and discuss the impact of the digital world on young people with the schools headmaster.
