Starlight Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
Have you ever wanted to explore a safari at night? YOU CAN!
During a recent trip to Walt Disney World, I ( Shannon ) was able to experience the Starlight Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge — and what a truly unique experience it was!
Starlight Safari: The Experience
After checking in for our 8:30pm safari, we were greeted by our guide, Chelsea. She explained what we would see on our hour-long tour, and then we headed out to our safari vehicle!
We met our driver, Meredith, before loading into the open-air truck. It was a bit chilly this night, but blankets are provided for everyone which was a very nice touch. Also, each participant received a night-vision device to use (the device is for one eye, not a full set of binoculars).
Once we were advised of the safety rules and what to expect during the tour, we were off!
Over 30 species of animals call the Animal Kingdom Lodge savannas home. During our drive around the savannas (at both Kidani Village and Jambo House) we saw giraffe, Ankole cattle, zebras, and springbok — just to name a few!
Chelsea was very knowledgeable in telling us about the animals and their lives at the Lodge, and answering questions from the group.
It took some practice, but I even managed to use the night-vision device with my phone camera to get a few cool pics!
Starlight Safari: Reservation Details
The Starlight Safari is open to every guest of Walt Disney World Resort, not just those staying at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge! The current price is $74.17 + tax per person, and guests must be 8 years or older to participate. The tour runs twice nightly, at 8:30pm and 10:00pm. Please note that pricing and tour times may be subject to change. Advanced reservations are recommended.

Experience the savannas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Jambo House and Kidani Village in a new and exciting way with this unique tour! During the one hour experience, guests will board an open air safari vehicle for a journey on the savannas.
Important Details:
- The tour takes place two times each night at 8:30 and 10:00.
- Each tour is limited to 12 people and guests must be 8 years of age or older to participate.
- The current cost is $89+tax per person
- It is recommended that guests be in good health as the ride can get quite bumpy.
- Guests must leave any mobility devices behind (wheelchair, EVC, etc) and they will be able to retrieve them at the conclusion of the tour.
- Guests who are unable to transfer can participate but space is limited and the accommodation needs to be noted at the time of booking by calling to make a reservation.
- If you are traveling to Kidani from the Walt Disney World property, allow 90 minutes to arrive at the resort.
- Availability is extremely limited for this experience. Plan to book as far in advance as possible.
General Information and Check-in Experience:
Check in takes place under the porte-cochere at Disney’s Kidani Village. I chose the 8:30 time slot and my friend and I opted to dine prior to our tour at Sanaa, which is also located at Kidani Village. It was the perfect way to start our experience! We enjoyed a relaxing meal and explored the grounds of the resort prior to checking in. At about 8:15 we headed to the check in area. You do need a valid photo ID to check in for any tour so after presenting our IDs and signing a waiver, we had just a few minutes to wait until we boarded our safari vehicle. There are about 4 steps up into the vehicle but the steps were equipped with a handrail. The bench seating on the vehicle is shaped like a U around the sides and back of the vehicle.
Tour Experience:
Upon boarding, we found our night vision device waiting for us on the seat. We were given a brief lesson on how to use the device before setting off on our journey. We had two cast members accompanying us for the evening- one driving the vehicle and one narrating our tour. Both cast members were members of the animal care team who work directly with the animals at Disney. They were a wealth of knowledge! Our driver expertly navigated the terrain and was responsible for opening and shutting the gate systems in between the savannas. Throughout the tour, our guide gave lots of interesting information on the animals located around the savannas and how the caretakers care for the animals year round. We saw ostriches, zebras, giraffes, antelope, and more! We had a few up close experiences with the giraffe and zebras as they munched on some dinner nearby. I could have watched them for hours! The guides stopped frequently when we would encounter an animal and encouraged us to get up and take a good look. The hour seemed to fly by because we were having so much fun!
Agent Impressions:
This experience was a highlight for me and definitely makes my list of favorite things I’ve done at Disney! This is such a unique experience and the small group setting is really nice. You have plenty of time to view animals without it feeling crowded but you also have lots of opportunities to chat with the guide and ask any questions.I feel that the value of the experience versus the price paid is great. We were staying next door at Animal Kingdom Lodge and I would say this is a must if you are staying at Jambo House or Kidani! Even if you aren’t staying at one of the Animal Kingdom resorts, if you are an animal lover, this tour should be on your list! I enjoyed the tour so much, I would definitely consider doing it again in the future!
- Plan accordingly for the weather. We did this tour in late October and the weather was absolutely perfect, if not a little chilly with the nighttime breeze. The tour can also take place in light rain so be prepared for that. It can be canceled in case of severe, or otherwise inclement, weather.
- If you are staying on site, plan this experience for later in your trip to increase your chances of getting a reservation. It books up very quickly!
- I enjoyed the 8:30 slot. It seemed that the animals were still fairly active while eating their dinner, which made for some good viewing opportunities.
- Make a night of it! Plan a meal at Boma, Jiko, or Sanna prior to your tour. You might also consider stopping in one of the lounges for drinks and appetizers before or after your experience.
- Be aware that the seating and ride itself aren’t exactly comfy. You may also be twisting around to see the animals depending on where they are located.

Night Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
When I started planning our itinerary for our last Disney World trip I set out to find something new for my husband and I to experience. It just so happened it was going to be our first trip where we were going to call Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge our home away from home. When I started researching the resort I discovered that they offer exclusive tours to guests who stay at the resort! Jackpot!
The night safari caught my eye as soon as I read “night vision goggles!” I mean who wouldn’t LOVE to play with night vision goggles? I was SOLD. I called and made a reservation for the two of us.
Things to remember when you call and make a reservation for this awesome experience;
- Call (or contact your Travel With the Magic Agent) as soon as you know you want to partake in the night safari. They only take 10 people on each nightly safari so space is limited. The number to call is 407-938-4755.
- You HAVE to be a guest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. What an awesome excuse (you don’t really need an excuse to stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge BUT in case you needed an EXTRA push this tour could be it!) to try this beautiful resort!
- Guest must be at least 8 years old to partake in the safari AND guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult participant.
- Payment is due at the time of booking.
The rendezvous point for the night safari is at the check-in station for Sanaa. Sanaa is a beautiful table service restaurant located in the Kidani Village section of the Animal Kingdom Lodge. It serves African cooking with Indian flavors. If you stay in the main house of The Animal Kingdom Lodge or Jambo House, it is a quick and very pleasant walk over. Tip: Take advantage of being in the vicinity of Sanaa. Knowing that we would be partaking in this tour I made reservations for dinner before our 9:45pm safari check in time. It was a great precursor to our safari!
After our delicious dinner (I highly recommend the bread service.) we went back to the station where we checked in for dinner and checked in for the safari. They gave us glow in the dark bracelets and told us to charge them on one of the light fixtures. I wondered to myself what these bracelets where for and before I could even finish my thought the cast member said to me “you will need them so the guide doesn’t lose you.” I chuckled and sat down to wait for the rest of our adventure group and guides. Surely he was joking right? Everyone soon arrived and our safari guides joined us . The first thing our guide said was, “Great you all have your bracelets on so I don’t lose you out there.” The original cast member must have witnessed my look of surprise, chuckled and said, “See? I wasn’t kidding!” Well played guys, well played.
At 10pm sharp we boarded our safari truck, were given instruction on how to use our night vision goggles and off we went to explore. It was amazing. The animals were out in full force and we even had a mischievous young giraffe try to join us in our safari jeep! (I’m still sad I wasn’t fast enough to catch a photo on the night vision goggles of said giraffe. He caught me off guard and taking a photo thru night vision goggles isn’t the easiest thing in the world! Next time!)
Take a look at him! Isn’t he the cutest? Side note: Learning to take a photo thru night vision goggles is no joke!
I was also excited to find out that a portion of the tour price is donated to the Disney Conservation Fund! At the end of the tour we were given a special pin showing that we were conservation heroes.
Overall, I highly recommend the night safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. We loved our hour long ride on the wild side! Are you ready to try out a night safari? I would love to help! Contact me at [email protected] , on Facebook or by phone at 1-800-670-4312, ext. 143.

I’ve Stayed at EVERY Disney World Resort. Here’s Why Animal Kingdom Lodge Is Worth It.
I’ve stayed at every single Disney World Resort hotel and that means I know a lot about the pros and cons of the different options.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is a unique resort that brings design and elements of the African savanna to guests. This deluxe hotel is pricey (rooms start at around $470 per night) compared to other options, but in my experience, it just might be worth the spend. Let’s talk about what makes Animal Kingdom Lodge worth it!
Before we dive in, you can get a full sense of this hotel with my full tour of the rooms, pools, lobby, restaurants, and more. Watch right here!
But let’s talk more about this hotel!
The Theming
The first thing that might make Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge worth the stay is the theming. This resort has an African safari theme that you can see throughout the hotel. Of course, the pinnacle of this theme is the fact that it sits next to animal enclosures or the savanna, where you can see real giraffes, zebras, and more.
But the theme extends in every facet of the hotel — with standout details like a multi-story lobby complete with a 4-story tall window that overlooks the savanna. I especially love the bridge in the lobby, and the inclusion of African art around the lobby and the rest of the hotel. There’s even African-inspired music and greenery around the hotel.
The Location
The location also might be a reason to stay at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. The hotel is located in the Animal Kingdom resort area and is close to the other Disney parks, as well — although perhaps not as close as hotels in other areas of Disney World.
Still, as it is on Disney property, you have access to the Disney World bus system and can take a bus to any of the four theme parks or Disney Springs . Animal Kingdom Lodge does only offer bus transportation, but there are limited stops so the ride is usually pretty quick.
Rooms and Amenities
This hotel offers a number of room types from standard rooms to impressive suites and many are available with savanna views. Where else can you stay and see a giraffe right outside your window?
Amenities and perks-wise, this deluxe hotel grants you access to recreation and Disney perks like Early Theme Park Entry and Extended Evening Hours . And the rooms themselves are well-themed and luxurious in many ways. I absolutely love the dark wood tones.
Dining Options
No lie, some of my favorite restaurants in all of Disney World are located at Animal Kingdom Lodge. From the tasty quick service, The Mara (where you can find zebra domes !), to a number of elevated options, you’re sure to find something you’ll enjoy.
Boma – Flavors of Africa is an African-inspired buffet that is beloved by many and I am a personal fan of Jiko – The Cooking Place , an elevated restaurant inspired by African sunsets. The resort is sure to please picky eaters and those looking for a more adventurous or exciting meal! Don’t forget to grab some South African wine at Victoria Falls Lounge or order the Bread Service at Sanaa !
Recreation and Activities
As a deluxe hotel, the resort offers a number of recreational activities that are pretty special. There are beautiful pool areas, a fitness center, and on-site cultural experiences like drumming lessons and storytelling from African cultural representatives.
On top of that, the animal-based activities of the hotel are like no other. There are multiple savanna viewing areas and animal observation decks where Cast Members can teach you more about the animals on the savanna. You can even sometimes view them with nightvision goggles! For a bonus experience, consider booking the nighttime safari experience.
In conclusion, Animal Kingdom Lodge just might be a must-stay for any animal-loving Disney fan — especially since it is one of the more moderately priced deluxe hotels!
My stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge brought me up-close and personal with wildlife and was beyond memorable. I especially loved seeing the Grey Crowned Cranes that dance to court one another…although I maybe could have done without the yellow jacket flying into my room.
From the theming and accommodations to the unique animal experiences and dining options, this hotel has a lot to offer.

10 Unique Experiences at Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Animal Kingdom is so much more than a zoo.
In honor of Animal Kingdom’s 20th anniversary on April 22nd, I wanted to share some of the incredible experiences you can find at the park and at its neighboring resort, Animal Kingdom Lodge. Here are 10 fun ways you can enhance your Disney adventure!
1) Ultimate Nights of Adventure VIP Tour
During this four hour guided tour of Animal Kingdom you’ll experience FastPass+ access for the following attractions: Avatar Flight of Passage, Na’vi River Journey, Expedition Everest, Kilimanjaro Safaris, and Dinosaur. You’ll also get VIP seating for Rivers of Light, Animal Kingdom’s nighttime spectacular, plus signature snacks and a specialty beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic).
2) Wild Africa Trek
During this three hour tour you’ll not only explore the Harambe Wildlife Reserve via a privately-guided safari vehicle, but you’ll also walk along grassland paths and cross rope bridges. You’ll have the opportunity to get up close views of many of Animal Kingdom’s animals. This experience includes an arrangement of African-inspired snacks in the morning and afternoon, as well as a digital collection of photos taken throughout the tour.
3) Caring for Giants
Get an up close view of Animal Kingdom’s elephants as animal specialists and African cultural representatives teach you how they care for and protect these magnificent creatures. You’ll learn fascinating facts and get a glimpse of the day-to-day responsibilities involved in keeping the elephants happy.
4) Rivers of Light Dining Package
Dine at one of two incredible restaurants at Animal Kingdom and enjoy VIP seating for Rivers of Light, the park’s nighttime spectacular. Choose from a character dining experience at Tusker House Restaurant or a signature meal at Tiffins. This package is eligible for use with the Disney Dining Plan.
5) Savor the Savanna: Evening Safari Experience
Take a guided evening safari through the Harambe Wildlife Reserve and visit a private viewing area of the savanna. Indulge in a sampling of African-inspired cuisine paired with a selection of regional beer and wine. Guests also receive a commemorative keepsake to take home.
6) Wanyama Safari
Board a 12-person safari vehicle for a 90-minute tour of the Harambe Wildlife Reserve as your guide teaches you about the 30 different special that live on the savanna at Animal Kingdom Lodge. Afterwards, indulge in a multi-course meal at Jiko – The Cooking Place, including South African wine pairings and a dessert sampling.
7) Sense of Africa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
During this three-and-a-half hour tour, you’ll learn about the story line behind Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and dine in one of its featured restaurants, Boma. After an African-inspired buffet breakfast you’ll board a private safari vehicle and head backstage for some up-close encounters with a few of the savanna’s animals.
8) Starlight Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
Tour the savannas of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge after dark using night vision goggles from your privately-guided safari vehicle. During this one hour tour you’ll see up to 30 different species roaming under the stars. A portion of the proceeds from this tour benefit Disney’s conservation initiatives.
9) Jiko Wine Tasting
Sample a trio of South African wines at Jiko – The Cooking Place. This signature restaurant is located at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, only a short ride from Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park. Each wine is paired with a selection of cheeses and learn about the wine regions of Africa.
10) Dine with an Animal Specialist
Enjoy a four-course lunch at Sanaa as you learn about the animals of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, wildlife care, wildlife research, and Disney’s conservation initiatives from one of Disney’s Animal Specialists. Each table is limited to 12 people in order to provide guests with an intimate setting to ask questions and learn from the expert.
So now the only question is, which experience do you want to add to your next visit?

- Getting there
Adjoining Disney’s Animal Kingdom, this is a great choice not only for Disney fans and themepark fiends but also for animal lovers – it's African-themed, and you feel as if you’re on safari, with authentic-looking buildings made of natural materials throughout the vast grounds inhabited by more than 200 hoofed animals and birds.
Families staying here can learn about the animals they’re looking at and make a difference: opt for the four-course lunch in the Kidani Village and you'll be joined by an animal expert and get to meet endangered radiated tortoises, happy in the knowledge that what you pay includes a donation to the Disney Conservation Fund.
There are numerous on-site dining options, from sitting around campfires to formal dining, all with spectacular views. Enjoy a spot of wine-tasting, go on a jeep safari or simply hang out in the two vast pools or in the kid’s pool area with its water cannons and slides. If you want time to enjoy the spa, make use of the supervised children’s activity centre for 3-12 year olds, where younger guests enjoy African-inspired arts and crafts and Disney movies. Complimentary shuttles help you get around.
Rooms sleep 4-8 in a combination of standard and one- and two-bedroom suites, continuing the theme with heavy wooden furniture, mosquito nets and African art on the walls.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is a 30-minute transfer from Orlando International Airport.
