Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Complete Guide

by Dan Leonard Dec 29, 2022

Complete Guide to Star Wars:Galactic Starcruiser

Atrium of the Halcyon, Star Wars:Galactic Starcruiser

With its first cruise launching in March, 2022, the Star Wars:Galactic Starcruiser is Walt Disney World Resort’s newest and most advanced example of Disney storytelling brought to life. Guests have the opportunity to go beyond just watching the action unfold- they become characters in an all new Star Wars adventure, where everyone has the chance to be the hero (or villain, if that’s more your speed). This guide will give you all the (spoiler free) information you need to set sail on your own galactic adventure!

What is this Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser thing, anyhow?

Not just a hotel.

One of the most difficult things to understand for people who haven’t experienced the Starcruiser for themselves is what exactly is this experience all about? It’s unfortunate that most news stories and bloggers have been calling it the “Star Wars hotel” since it opened. The experience is so much deeper than just a themed hotel. A trip on the Galactic Starcruiser is like a 2-night murder mystery dinner party with Hollywood level production values, mixed with a live action choose-your-own-adventure book, wrapped up in a fully immersive atmosphere that allows guests to live in the Star Wars universe.

A Cruise Through The Galaxy

It’s also a legit cruise. Whether the ship actually goes anywhere is up to your imagination. It has all the makings of a cruise in outer space. Guests arrive and are escorted to their staterooms. A muster drill is required during the first day. There is fabulous gourmet food at dinner, and delicious buffets for breakfast and lunch. Galaxy class entertainment and a wide range of shipboard entertainment and activities are arranged by the ship’s cruise director. The ship makes a port call (in this case to Blackspire Outpost on the planet Batuu), where guests can take part in shore excursions.

The experience of cruising on the Halcyon isn’t only for dedicated Star Wars fans. Whether you’re well versed in the lore of our favorite galaxy far, far away, or have a hard time telling a lightsaber from a Wookiee, the Galactic Starcruiser is an amazing opportunity to experience immersive storytelling on a level that’s unavailable anywhere else.

Things to know before you go

A little preparation can go a long way to having the best possible experience onboard the ship. Here are some important things to know about preparing  for your trip.

Booking and add-ons

While the Star Wars:Galactic Starcruiser experience can be booked directly through Disney, we strongly recommend getting help with the booking from your trusted Key to the World Travel Advisor. There are lots of little details and extra experiences that can be added on to your cruise. Your travel advisor not only knows how and when to make those reservations, but is also happy to spend the time on the phone to get them booked for you.

Extra experiences that must be booked in advance include:

Who are you, and what do you look like?

This is where the fun really begins. Guests aren’t just allowed, but encouraged to dress the part! Costumes onboard the Star Wars:Galactic Starcruiser don’t have to be elaborate or screen quality. With a little thought and some time scrolling through your favorite online shopping site, you can easily put together a convincing “in universe” look for the cruise.

Name and planet of origin

First, spend a little time thinking about your character, and what path you’d like to follow during the cruise. This can help influence your “look”. Made up character names aren’t necessary, but can be fun and help you feel more connected to the story.  Crew members will ask you where you’re from. Feel free to pick a planet from a Star Wars movie, tell them what city you live in, or make up a new home planet for yourself. No matter what you say, the crew members will play along accordingly.

Clothes make the character

Wyatt in Star Wars outfit on Batuu

The type of character you want to portray can influence your outfits.

  • Are you a Force sensitive student of the path of the Jedi? Light colored tunics and brown robes or cloaks fit the look. For a more subtle Force user look, consider emulating the Saja. The Saja are students and teachers of the ways of the Force and lightsaber combat about the ship. They dress in natural fibers, primarily dark blue with red accents. Look for accessories made of wood, stone, and other materials from nature.
  • Resistance sympathizers often dress in a paramilitary style, with lots of flight suits and tactical gear. You can also emulate Han Solo, Poe Dameron, Rey, or your favorite resistance fighter. Vests, scarves and fingerless gloves are popular accessories for this bunch. Please note that blasters and other weapons (with the exception of lightsabers) are not allowed on board the Galactic Starcruiser. However, a very popular and useful accessory is a “drop hip bag”-a belt pouch that straps around the thigh and resembles a blaster holster.
  • Are you more of a rogue or smuggler type? Imagine what a space pirate would look like, and run with it! Flamboyant jackets, scarves, flowing “pirate” tunics, and lots of flair help you fit the role.
  • If you feel like letting your dark side out, or are a First Order sympathizer,  pack plenty of black! Sleek, futuristic clothes in black or grey, with deep red accents are the perfect fit for this character type.
  • It can also be fun to let your imagine run wild. Want to be a member of an alien species? Watch some movies or check out some books, and go for it! Have a favorite character that speaks to you? Put together your best take on their signature look. There are plenty of resources online, including websites and Facebook costuming groups dedicated to the Galactic Starcruiser experience. Star Wars Visual Dictionary books are easy to find at your local library, and are great resources for costume ideas also.

Don’t forget, these are just recommendations. Use your imagination, and make your character look the way you want. Or don’t- costumes aren’t required, but definitely help to immerse you in the experience!

How much to pack for the Star Wars:Galactic Starcruiser experience

One question many guests have is just how much to pack for the cruise. The journey is 2 nights/1.5 days. The waking hours during the experience can get very busy, so a multitude of costume changes aren’t recommended. Of course, if you’re an expert at the quick change and want to go all out, feel free.

  • One to two looks can be perfect for your cruise. It’s a good idea to include visual elements that carry from one outfit to another, to help crew members recognize you if they need your help later in the trip. Don’t forget that Batuu has three suns, and your visit to the planet can be very warm-plan accordingly. You might want a fresh set of clothes after you return from the planet in case you get sweaty.
  • Even though both dinners during the cruise are extravagant affairs, formal dress isn’t required (although certainly welcome if you want to get fancy).
  • Comfortable shoes are a must-you spend a lot of time on your feet. For a relaxing cruise, things can get very busy and hectic, especially if the First Order decides to make an unscheduled appearance during your sailing.
  • What to expect on board the Star Wars:Galactic Starcruiser, and how to play the game
  • Make sure everyone in your party has a smart phone or device capable of installing apps and connecting to WiFi and Bluetooth. You’ll need this to receive communications from crew members, check your schedule, and complete various tasks around the ship. Old cellphones work great for younglings. If you don’t have a device for kids in your group, ask at the ship services counter in the atrium of the ship. They have loaner devices and can help you get set up.
  • Along with devices, each member of your party needs to have an account for the Play Disney Parks app. This app turns into the “datapad” which is the main tool for “playing” the game.

What to expect onboard the Star Wars:Galactic Starcruiser, and playing the “game”

The crew of the Star Cruiser do a great job of making sure everyone has the best experience possible. They subtly guide you through the cruise, and are always available to help if you run into technical difficulties.

Getting on and getting acclimated

Boarding the ship starts at 1 P.M., but you can arrive up to 2 hours early to navigate the parking line, check in, and line up to board. If you drive yourself, complimentary valet parking is required. Guests can also arrive by taxi or ride share.

Pro Tip! If you’re staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel prior to boarding the Star Wars:Galactic Starcruiser, make sure the front desk is aware of your cruise, and they’ll give you late checkout for embarkation day so you can stay in your room and prepare for boarding without rushing. The front desk can also arrange for complimentary transportation from your hotel to the starport where you board the Halcyon.

Once you’ve checked in, received your Em-bands (outer space magic bands), and cleared the bag check, you’ll take a transport shuttle up to the Halcyon. Crew members will greet you in the atrium, give you a brief tour of the ship, and take you to your stateroom.

Once settled in, make sure to keep an eye on the schedule in your Datapad. This will alert you to events such as the muster drill and Captain’s welcoming toast, as well as scheduled activities such as your bridge operations training session and lightsaber combat training.

Activities Onboard the Star Wars:Galactic Starcruiser

Holo Sabaac

During free time, feel free to explore all public areas of the ship. Make sure you push buttons, scan your Em-band, and poke around. You might unlock secrets that help draw you into the story of your cruise. Talk to crew members and characters you meet on board. This is one of the key ways you receive tasks and move through story lines during your cruise.

lightsaber training

Pro Tip! On day 2, your scheduled shuttle departure time for Batuu is more of a guideline than a strict rule. It’s a good idea to arrive at the shuttle bay earlier to catch one of the first transports out. This will help you get everything done before the heat of Batuu’s 3 suns reaches its peak, and allow you to spend plenty of time onboard the ship in the afternoon.

Food and drink on board the Star Wars:Galactic Starcruiser

There are many great options for dining and drinking around the galaxy. The best part is all food and most non-alcoholic drinks are included in your fare, so you can enjoy as much as you like without worrying about picking up the check!

disney star cruise ship

  • For breakfast and lunch, visit the Crown of Corellia for an intergalactic buffet with familiar but reimagined foods that are really from a different world. Note, the menu for these buffets is different each day, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to stop in as often as possible!

disney star cruise ship

  • Dinner each night in the Crown of Corellia dining room is a fantastic experience, with food that you really can’t get anywhere else. Try everything and be open to new things. Dinners are served family style, and if you want more of anything just let your server know. Also, feel free to order items off the younglings menu if you wish in addition to the main meal.

disney star cruise ship

  • Food is available in the late afternoon in the Sublight Lounge, and is included in your fare. Take advantage of the variety of snacks, they’re amazing. The smoked cheese plate is a highlight!

disney star cruise ship

  • The ship services counter has a rotating selection of snacks available throughout the day. The atrium also has a water station for refilling your stateroom’s water flask with still or sparkling water.
  • Guests receive a voucher for a meal and beverage at Docking Bay 7 during your shore excursion to Batuu. This voucher can be saved and used at any theme park quick service location on disembarkation day if you prefer.  Pro Tip! Unless you’ve never visited Batuu and really want to try the food offered at Docking Bay 7, we recommend you skip lunch on planet. The variety of food in the Crown of Corellia dining room for lunch day 2 is phenomenal and not to be missed!

disney star cruise ship

  • If you need a break from the action, head to your stateroom and check in with D3-09, the in room droid. She’ll frequently have messages for you on the comms center in your room, and will occasionally have tasks for you to help with. If she offers to tell you a bedtime story the first night, make sure to accept!

disney star cruise ship

  • If a strange child approaches you in a public area of the ship and asks for help with a task, don’t be alarmed. It’s part of the story, so play along.
  • Talk to lots of people! Make friends with fellow passengers and crew members. Heavy roleplaying isn’t necessary, but it is important to play along. You get out of the experience what you put into it.
  • Push buttons, open doors, try to hack into computers that claim to be for crew access only. Even if nothing happens right away, it may unlock story elements later on.

A look aboard Disney’s $6,000 per stay, immersive Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel

A galaxy far, far away gets a whole lot closer.

By Chaim Gartenberg

Galactic Starcruiser invites guests to live in the Star Wars universe for a two-day trip.

I walked into Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser prepared to pretend. I was going to be Ch’aim Garteenbar, a reformed smuggler celebrating going straight with a luxurious cruise trip on the Halcyon, pride of Chandrila Star Line.

Unfortunately, due to the compressed nature of the media preview, I spent most of my time aboard Disney’s biggest bet in years in my usual guise of “Chaim Gartenberg, reporter.” Part hotel, part LARP, part theme park, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser wants to be nothing less than the ultimate Star Wars experience, one that sucks you into a living, breathing sci-fi story unfolding around you — and for the price that Disney is placing on it, one that has a lot of expectations to live up to.

The main Atrium of the Halcyon and what you’ll see when you first step on board.

To be extremely clear from the start: this is not a review of the full Galactic Starcruiser experience. The media preview I attended was a four-hour curated “sampler platter” of what guests will get over a two-day stay. I didn’t get to sleep at the hotel, and my time “on board” was focused on seeing the major set pieces and interactive components in group settings instead of the choice-based, smaller storylines that guests will get to build out over the full two-day trip.

As such, this is not an assessment of whether the whole package is worth the eye-watering $4,809 starting price that Disney is charging for a Galactic Starcruiser stay. ( The exorbitant price tag was never far from my mind when I was touring the “ship,” though.)

While I can’t tell you everything about the minute-to-minute details of the branching, interactive storylines that Galactic Starcruiser is putting so much emphasis on, I did get to travel aboard the Halcyon and see some of the greatest hits and unique elements of the experience.

disney star cruise ship

Galactic Starcruiser, much like Galaxy’s Edge before it, isn’t just a creation for Disney theme parks. The modern desire to connect every element of media and storytelling together is a part of the Galactic Starcruiser experience, and Disney is already working to seed the luxury liner across decades of Star Wars history.

The Halcyon plays a role in the ongoing High Republic multimedia storyline of books ; there’s already a comic book series that explains the backstory and shows iconic characters like Anakin Skywalker, Padme Amidala, and Lando Calrissian’s stays aboard the ship. There’s also the recently announced novel The Princess and the Scoundrel , which will reveal the untold story of Han and Leia’s honeymoon on the Halcyon. At the current rate of Galactic Starcruiser tie-ins, I’d put even odds on the ship appearing in an episode of a Disney Plus show before the year is out.

disney star cruise ship

Establishing the Halcyon as a key part of Star Wars lore isn’t just Disney not-so-subtly building hype and marketing for its pricey hotel, though. It’s a foundation for a key part of the sales pitch to guests. You don’t just get to live in a Star Wars - ish story for a day or two; your time aboard the Halcyon is part of the Star Wars saga — as much a part of canon as any of the movies, video games, or books.

You’re participating in events but never really shaping them

That idea of living in an interactive hotel experience has seen Galactic Starcruiser draw a lot of comparisons to Westworld , the eponymous theme park from the HBO series. The two have a lot in common: a promise of total immersion in a fictional world (complete with factions and costumes), the idea that guests can forge their own stories within the setting, and the sky-high price tag that limits attendance to guests with exceptionally deep pockets. Galactic Starcruiser even has its own AI companions and roving robots (although they’re far less murderous than those in Westworld’s.)

But Westworld’s impossible park promises a place where you can do anything or be anyone in the Wild West. Galactic Starcruiser puts more emphasis on “choice” over “agency.” A character can bring you to help sabotage the engine or rescue Chewbacca, but you won’t be the one making those decisions. Guests will have some control over which storylines they participate in and which side they’re on, but you’re still just a side character; you’re participating in events but never really shaping them.

disney star cruise ship

The Galactic Starcruiser experience starts at a spaceport where you’ll ride a transport pod up to the Halcyon proper — the lines between “hotel” and “ride” blurring together from the start.

Exiting the pod takes you to the Atrium, the Halcyon’s “lobby,” where you’ll run straight into guests and cast members alike milling around, ready to draw you into the plot. In quick succession, I met Gaya (the visiting galactic pop star), her manager Raithe Kole, an aspiring musician named Sandro Alimander (who, like me, was on his first trip off-planet), and the ship’s captain Riyola Keevan. Everyone had a story and, more importantly, wanted to try to involve me in it. Despite the elaborate costumes and setting, it still threw me off balance at first. I had to take a few minutes to figure out how I’d be fitting into the roleplaying.

disney star cruise ship

In some ways, the “ship” is a little too polished and clean. At a panel, Brad Schoeneberg, Disney’s vice president of brand merchandising, said it was inspired by “taking a look at the finer side of life in Star Wars, ” like the royal halls of Naboo, and (more oddly) the luxury yacht of crime lord Dryden Vos and the problematic halls of Canto Bight. It seemed like the visual language occasionally leaned more toward the gleaming ships of Star Trek than the lived-in style that’s the hallmark of Star Wars. There’s a glossy plastic look that never quite lets you forget you’re in what’s essentially a very large, very long theme park ride.

The Halcyon is also smaller than you might expect. The main dining cabin is about the size of a medium-sized restaurant, while the atrium’s neon-soaked bar offers seating for a couple dozen people at most. (And only a single sabacc table!) There are “restricted” spaces that open up for story elements, like the cargo hold, brig, and engineering bay, but there are really only two or three main “public” spaces to spend time in outside of those plot moments.

A room at Galactic Starcruiser isn’t big, but you’re probably not going to want to spend much time there anyway.

The rooms I saw were pretty compact, too. There’s space for a bed, a slide-out table, and enclosed bunk beds built into one of the walls. It looks to have leaned too far into emulating the space-sensitive designs of an actual cruise ship. I’ve never stayed in a $2,000-per-night hotel room, but I would expect a lot more than this.

No one will mistake Galactic Starcruiser for a traditional luxury hotel by Earth standards. There’s not much in the way of normal amenities — no pools, gyms, or spas, and virtually no natural light. (There is a single outdoor space, branded the “Climate Simulator” to avoid breaking character.) Sure, you wouldn’t go to Galactic Starcruiser for a regular hotel experience, but the price still feels like a miss.

Disney is putting plenty of emphasis on the food and drink aboard (both included in the ticket price, although specialty and alcoholic drinks are not). The presentation aims to go above and beyond a standard hotel menu. Much like Pandora or Galaxy’s Edge , food features unique shapes, colors, and textures to evoke a galaxy far, far away from our own, like colorful blue shrimp (allegedly sourced from Felucia) or black lava-rock bread evoking the volcanic world of Mustafar.

At the Star Wars hotel, even the food has lore.

The Crown of Corellia Dining Room.

Each trip on Galactic Starcruiser will follow the same broad story arc. Guests are passengers aboard the 275th anniversary trip of the luxury starcruiser, the Halcyon, which is emulating its original voyage from Chandrila to Batuu. Set in between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker , the ship runs afoul of the First Order — Star Wars drama ensues.

Storylines, we’re told, will develop organically over the two-day trip, based on how players interact and react to cast members and the actions they take along the way. There are multiple branching paths, only some of which I got to take part in: smuggling a Resistance ally on board and sneaking into the engine room to reboot the ship’s systems — but there were other plots that appear at the finale event, like stealing access codes or unlocking a Jedi holocron, that weren’t in my (brief) journey. Someone else playing through a Resistance story might have seen more of those adventures, while a First Order-aligned guest would have had their own interactions to try to foil those plots.

The whole thing culminates in an action-packed live stage show finale — it wouldn’t be Star Wars without a lightsaber duel (one which includes the spectacular-looking “real” lightsaber prop the company showed off a few months ago ). “You may all be watching the same big events, but you’re not watching the same things,” said Cory Rouse, a creative director for Walt Disney Imagineering, noting that a guest who sided with the Resistance will see payoffs that might not make sense to a scoundrel character, while a First Order ally will experience the finale in yet another light.

Disney’s movie magic comes to life when Rey wields her “real” retractable lightsaber in the event’s finale.

Immersion is the name of the game here: each sign is written in both English and the fictional Aurebesh alphabet; every cast member, waiter, room service attendant, and bartender is in character the entire time; and elaborately costumed guests chat with you about their own lives to help draw you into the world. As you’d expect from a Disney park experience, there’s incredible attention to detail. All the doors on the ship are sliding, instead of on hinges, to better fit into the Star Wars universe.

But that level of theater is table stakes for Disney World. Galactic Starcruiser aims to take things a step further by actively looking to draw in guests. Visitors are encouraged to dress up in full Star Wars cosplay to inhabit the world, at least for a day or two. (Disney, of course, is happy to sell you Star Wars -themed attire if you don’t already have it.) And the key differentiator is the ability to participate in the adventure.

Disney will happily sell you any accessories or outfits you’ll need at The Chandrila Collection gift shop.

The average Star Wars movie is about two hours long. Two seasons of The Mandalorian on Disney Plus will take you about half a day. Galactic Starcruiser aims for a far bigger scope: two days’ worth of Star Wars story. That means turning a lot of the ordinary parts of your day — including eating and sleeping — that you wouldn’t find in a movie into something more special and Star Wars -y.

“[Movies] are a slice of life with all the boring cuts part out,” Rouse told The Verge . “Whenever we’re trying to build a world like this, we actually want you to have all of the extra — what we call the magical mundane,” turning those “boring parts” into something more. That might be a comment from your (in-character) server at the bar about the ongoings aboard the ship or a glimpse of a character like Rey gesturing at you from around a corner to help her with a mission.

“Do you want to play Star Wars?”

“What they’re really asking you is ‘Do you want to play Star Wars?’” Rouse says.

The word that Disney uses for most of Galactic Starcruiser’s more unique aspects is an “invitation.” As Ann Morrow Johnson, executive producer and creative director at Walt Disney Imagineering, noted in a press panel, “I think so much of this experience lives in these smaller subtler moments where these characters are existing, they’re living their lives, and they’re inviting you to come and play with them, if you want to.”

Playing some sabacc at the Sublight Lounge bar.

At one point in our abridged trip, a few members of my group were pulled aside by a crew member to assist in a jailbreak for a captured Resistance member. Together, we hacked a terminal, passed the brig override code across a room in a short game of telephone, and unlocked the door so that they could escape. Presumably, I could have decided not to help if I wanted to aid the First Order instead.

Galactic Starcruiser asks a lot of its guests. You’re basically diving into a giant improv exercise with dozens of strangers. And what you’ll get out of the experience is largely what you put in. In my short time there, it was hard to shake the feeling that I was just going through the motions for the particular story track my group was assigned. Maybe the smaller groups, added time, additional context, and more gradual pace of storytelling that the full experience has help make the process feel more organic. But that guided nature that slots you into specific roles is at least part of the point.

Galactic Starcruiser asks a lot of its guests

According to Sara Thacher, a senior R&D Imagineer and the creative director behind all the branching narrative choices on board, Galactic Starcruiser is intended so that “you can show up and not have a character, not have to know any lines, not have to know anything about the story” and still have a good time. She described it almost like a traditional video game: players fall into a role from the game, and they can make choices but still have the framework and guidance they need to have fun. My short time on board didn’t really give me the chance to make those decisions for myself, however.

Disney also wants to make sure guests are able to understand what choices they’re making: Thacher explained that an important goal is making sure that when you make a decision (to help someone or not), it’ll be clear what the broader outcome is: “We want you to know, ‘Yes, this means if I do this, I’m helping the Resistance,’ and presenting those choices as clearly as we can and really, as often as we can, as you as you encounter different pieces of the story, different pieces of the narrative.” In other words, if you’re looking to fight with the Resistance, you shouldn’t have to worry that talking to the wrong person will get you stuck for your whole trip as a First Order sympathizer.

“Real choice means I have to understand the stakes,” Thacher adds.

Learning the ways of the Jedi in the ship’s lightsaber training pod activity.

There are a few ride-like activities on the Halcyon, like the lightsaber training pod or the bridge, and the overall vibe here is more cruise ship than theme park — albeit a cruise ship that’s been ripped out of the Star Wars universe.

The lightsaber training was (unsurprisingly) the best of them. Guided by a Saja (a Jedi-like follower of the Force), guests are given a lightsaber to spin and slash around to block blaster bolts. The effects and haptics here make the activity — not just light and sound, but you can actually feel the saber blocking each bolt as it flashes in the real world.

The bridge area, meanwhile, is a more cooperative group activity in the vein of the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run ride at Galaxy’s Edge, with four different roles that guests rotate between. Bouncing across the different stations let me take a turn blocking asteroids, aligning the ship’s sensors by matching buttons and switches, blasting lasers, and more.

disney star cruise ship

Those shipboard activities, in addition to offering entertainment in their own right, help serve as catalysts for drawing guests further into those story arcs. A bridge training exercise, for example, might end with helping the ship’s captain on a clandestine rescue mission in an asteroid belt.

Guests will also journey down to the Galaxy’s Edge park in Disney World proper, where they’ll be able to ride the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Rise of the Resistance rides (Galactic Starcruiser guests will get to use the premium-purchase “ Lightning Lanes ” to avoid waiting in line, of course), along with accomplishing their own missions given to them from characters on the ship through the smartphone-based “Datapad” built into the Play Disney Parks app. Disney says those activities will also tie into guests’ individual, ongoing storylines when they come back aboard the ship.

A franchise that you can not just love, but live in

The integration of narrative, traditional theme park rides, live entertainment, and a hotel stay make Galactic Starcruiser a blend of virtually every aspect of a Disney World trip all at once. It feels like the next step for the modern, all-encompassing pop culture machines that have come to dominate entertainment: a franchise that you can not just love, but live in.

It’s also important to remember that Galactic Starcruiser is just the first of the company’s efforts here, one that will, like the parks it’s set in, presumably grow and change over time. And it’s easy to imagine that both Disney (and its competitors) will be thinking about how to bring this kind of first-hand fan experience to more properties in the future.

“Traveling through hyperspace ain’t like dusting crops.”

That immersive experience comes at a very literal cost, though. When Disney first announced pricing, a two-night stay was quoted as starting at $4,809 for two adults, while a family of four (three adults, one child) was $5,999. That only includes the “basic” — relatively speaking — Galactic Starcruiser experience. Things like alcoholic or “specialty” drinks, outfits to better fit into the Star Wars universe you’re joining for your stay, and experiences like Savi’s Lightsaber Workshop on Baatu are extras you’ll have to budget in, too, additions to dive even deeper into the world.

All this comes at a very literal cost

The end of our Galactic Starcruiser trip ended much in the same way that any day at Disney World does: a grand fireworks show celebrating a successful voyage. The explosions are bright and colorful, with shapes and designs far beyond anything terrestrial fireworks could do. But they’re also fake: they’re digital illusions playing on the massive “viewport” screens on the bridge, masked by the soaring John Williams score and the heightened reality you’re in.

Star Wars : Galactic Starcruiser

Star Wars : Galactic Starcruiser, more commonly known as the Star Wars hotel, is a two-night, fully-immersive “cruise” adventure. It is the most highly-themed Resort that Disney has ever  built, and it promises to transport guests into the world of Star Wars for an experience like no other.

Once you pass through the entrance and board your “launch pod”, all mention of Star Wars as a film stops. Instead, you’re a guest on The Halcyon,  flagship of the Chandrila Star Line, as you embark on a cruise across a galaxy far, far away. Highly advanced screens create the illusion that you’re traveling past iconic locations in the galaxy on your approach to your port of call, Batuu.

The ship is also expected to include several hidden areas, which are only accessible to guests on “secret missions”.

The main draw of the Galactic Starcruiser is the story. You are a guest on board the Halcyon who finds yourself drawn into the conflict between the Resistance and the First Order. Each guest will experience their own unique tale and the choices they make will carry over throughout their trip.

disney star cruise ship

This is a step beyond the existing Star Wars : Datapad you may have used in the Play Disney Parks app, as your physical actions in the resort and park will affect your standing, and Cast Members will respond to your choices. You could end up in the brig for tampering with the ship’s controls, or make an alliance with major players in the Galaxy at the Sublight Lounge.

Character Meet and Greets

Disney purports that guests will encounter familiar characters in new ways — even helping and joining them on missions that can impact their adventures the next day as well.

disney star cruise ship

Disney Wish, the new ship from Disney Cruise Line, has 'Star Wars,' 'Frozen,' superheroes and more

Portrait of Tim Walters

One term was used repeatedly Thursday during a virtual event revealing details on the new Disney Cruise Line's ship the Disney Wish : "first of its kind."

From dining experiences based on "Star Wars" and Marvel superheroes to a waterslide that was referred to as a "Disney attraction at sea," the new ship is filled with experiences unlike any other offered by Disney.

The Disney Wish will be the fifth ship to join the Disney fleet, with sailing expected to begin in summer 2022 out of Port Canaveral on Florida's East coast.

The first sailing is slated for June 9, 2022, with three- and four-night sailings going to Bahamas and Castaway Cay, and bookings will open May 27.

The virtual event began with a 30-minute video production worthy of Disney, with appearances by characters such as Captain Minnie, Captain Mickey, Olaf and a fairy godmother who beamed around Cruise Director Ashley Long to different areas of the ship.

The Upper Deck: The Aqua Mouse waterslide

The first stop was the Upper Deck, where a new waterslide was revealed. Called the "Aqua Mouse," it begins with a short film based on the classic Mickey and Minnie characters, called "Scuba Scramble."

A 760-foot ride then whisks passengers over and around the Upper Deck.

"Just like we do with our theme parks, we created a rich storyline with show scenes, lighting and special effects and even a few surprises," said Danny Handke, senior creative director for Walt Disney Imagineering.

Mermaid Lagoon is part of the adventure, and the Upper Deck area also features a "Toy Story"-themed area and an adults-only area.

For the kids: The Oceaneer Club

Children will also enjoy a feature called the Oceaneer Club, which hasn't been utilized on any of Disney's previous four cruise ships.

Sticking with the first-of-its-kind theme, children enter through a secret entrance that essentially looks like a small, round portal. Upon entering, it turns into a slide that whisks them into the Oceaneer Club. Sorry adults, it's not for you. They noted there will also be an adult entrance – it’s called a “door.”

The Oceaneer Club is for children ages 3 to 12 and has several unique experiences.

The Superhero Academy will allow young passengers to train with some of their favorite characters, such as Spider-Man, Black Panther, Ant Man and The Wasp, and they can also choose and make their own superhero costumes.

In Fairy Tale Hall, they'll will be able to enjoy the Rapunzel art studio, where they can make their own pictures; the Belle library themed for "Beauty and the Beast;" and Anna and Elsa’s Summerhus themed for "Frozen."

The third new feature for kids is the Imagineering Interactive Lab. Here, they can design their own roller coaster, then ride it virtually.

The Walt Disney Theater

From the kids area, the next reveal was the Walt Disney Theater.

The theater is inspired by a Magical Forest. While three shows will take place in the theater, only one was revealed: "Disney's Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular" is being reimagined and will play nightly.

The other two shows are new, original shows that will be revealed at a later date.

There are also three new entertainment concepts with more details to come later:

  • The Grand Hall Stage, located in the atrium, where shows will be put on for guests.
  • Luna, where the entertainment will evolve from day to night.
  • Hero Zone: A futuristic arena where imagination will meet active play.

"They offer ways for families to play together and connect," said Carlos Jimenez, a Managing Producer of Disney Cruise Lines.

For the adults: 'Star Wars,' superheroes and more

A new "Star Wars"-themed lounge called the “Hyperspace Lounge” will make passengers feel like they're having a beverage on a luxury spaceship. The window behind the bar shows scenes of outer space with planets and spaceships flying by in the background. They'll visit Batuu, Tatooine and more. Truly a Galaxy far, far away.

There’s a "Beauty and the Beast"-themed lounge called "The Rose" and “Palo Steakhouse,” with decor inspired by Cogsworth, the lovable clock from the film. It’s described as steakhouse fare meeting authentic Italian cuisine.

And there's the highest-end restaurant, “Enchante,” inspired by Lumiere, the candlestick from "Beauty and the Beast." It's a romantic and intimate venue with food created by Michelin three-star chef Arnaud Lallement.

Disney Wish staterooms include some that are two stories or above the bridge

Unique artwork inspired by "Cinderella" and other Disney classics adorn the staterooms, and 900 of 1,254 staterooms will be connected adjoining, making this ship the most family-friendly of the Disney fleet.

The rooms are larger, and most have an ocean view.

And for the first time, a Disney ship features two-story suites with spiral staircases and custom stained-glass art.

And, in another first, the Disney Wish will feature rooms above the bridge of the ship.

Let's eat: Disney Wish dining options

Now, what’s a Disney ship without food and interactive experiences while you eat?

The Disney Wish will have three new restaurants:

Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Experience will feature live shows with Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and, of course, Olaf. It has food inspired by Nordic influences.

1923 is named after the year Walt Disney Studios opened. It has food inspired by Hollywood and California flavors.

“1923 is a celebration of Walt’s legacy,” said Claire Weiss, Creative Director at Walt Disney Imagineering Germany.

The third was initially mentioned as being “top secret,” but was revealed as The World of Marvel. Passengers will play a role in a mission that unfolds while they dine.

More about the Disney Wish cruise ship

All four previous ships began their departures from Port Canaveral, with destinations in the Bahamas, including Disney’s privately owned island, Castaway Cay.

The Disney Wish will be in the “Triton Class.” It will include 1,250 staterooms and 4,000 guests, just like the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, but at 144,000 gross tons, it will be about 15,000 gross tons more than both ships.

One of the most important improvements is that the Disney Wish will be the first Disney vessel powered by liquefied natural gas. This clean-burning fuel significantly reduces emissions over more traditional marine bunker oil, thereby lessening the ship's environmental footprint.

The Disney Wish is the first of three new ships that will join Disney’s fleet by 2025.

Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser: Prices, Rooms, Itineraries, and More

disney star cruise ship

With Disney's Galactic Star Cruiser coming March 1, 2022, you might be wondering how this one of a kind experience will work.

Disney describes the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser as "like nothing else you’ve ever experienced: part live immersive theater, part themed environment, part culinary extravaganza, part real-life role-playing game—and yet so much more.

While your story unfolds, you’ll have the power to choose your path. Will you follow the rule of the First Order or join the Resistance in a secret plot? Strike a bargain with a gang of smugglers or sit back, sip a cocktail and watch it all from a safe distance?

The choice is yours as you step aboard the most immersive Star Wars story ever created—one where you live your own Star Wars adventure!"

Here you'll learn what's included, what room rates are, and how to plan for your out of this galaxy Star Wars cruise experience.

What Is The Galactic Starcruiser?

According to Disney, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is a revolutionary new 2-night experience where you and your group will embark on a first-of-its-kind Star Wars adventure that’s your own. It’s the most immersive Star Wars story ever created—live a bespoke experience and journey further into a Star Wars adventure than you ever dreamed possible.

Essentially this Star Wars experience is build like a cruise ship. Guests embark and disembark together on a 2 night journey.

What is Included?

Your Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser vacation package includes:

  • 2-night stay in a cabin or suite
  • Ongoing, immersive and interactive entertainment, where choices determine your experience
  • Food and beverages on the starcruiser (excluding alcoholic and specialty beverages) and a quick-service meal at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo or other select locations at Disney’s Hollywood Studios
  • Admission to Disney’s Hollywood Studios for your planetary excursion to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge
  • Valet parking
  • Exclusive Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser databand (known on your home planet as a MagicBand)

So essentially what makes this different is what is included with the price. You aren't just getting a room when you book the Starcruiser. You're also getting the included entertainment, food and drinks, free parking, a Magic band, and tickets to Hollywood Studios.

Starcruiser Cabins

The rooms on the Starcruiser aren't your typical resort room. Each room has a "view" of a galaxy far, far away. You'll see ships, planets, stars and other galactic sights float past your room.

It is important to note that this resort does NOT have a swimming pool.

Disney has released some sample rates to give an idea of what this experience will cost:

sample rates

As you can see from the graphic from Disney's website, a 2 night voyage for 2 guests would cost a total of $4809, 3 guests would be $5299, and 4 guests would be $5999.

No rates were provided for the larger Captain Suite.

It's also important to note that the sample prices provided are for an "off-peak" time at Disney World. So if you are planning on visiting during the summer or winter holiday season, I'd expect these rates to be much higher.

dinner

On the first night of your adventure, the Crown of Corellia Dining Room transforms for dinner into an enticing table-service supper club with a special musical appearance by a galactic superstar. You’ll enjoy a special evening with distinctive dining and entertainment as you socialize with passengers and crew.

With the serving of each course, a brief introduction presents the name, inspiration and ingredients for the dishes. The meal includes group appetizers for the table, a choice of entrée and a specialty plated dessert.

Is It Worth It?

It's hard to say if this experience will be worth the cost.

If you are a hard core Star Wars fan, knowing that this price includes not only the room, but also food and drinks, park tickets to Hollywood Studios, and entertainment, this could definitely be something worth spending money on.

I do wonder if discounts for Annual Passholders will be provided, since a free park ticket to Hollywood Studios is not an incentive.

I also question if families with younger kids would get their monies worth out of this type of experience.

We'll find out more and update this article when this experience opens in March of 2022!

Reservations open on October 28, 2021.

2022 Star Wars Day at Sea: Disney Cruise Line Info & Dates

disney star cruise ship

Star Wars Day at Sea is Disney Cruise Line’s celebration of adventures & characters from the saga on special 7-night Disney Fantasy sailings, usually during off-season Caribbean sailings. This post offers 2022 dates, info, photos, and our review of Star Wars Day at Sea.

For starters, Disney Cruise Line has just announced the 2022 dates that will feature Star Wars Day at Sea aboard the Disney Fantasy:

  • January 8, 2022: 7-Night Eastern Caribbean Cruise
  • January 15, 2022: 7-Night Eastern Caribbean Cruise
  • January 22, 2022: 7-Night Eastern Caribbean Cruise
  • January 29, 2022: 7-Night Western Caribbean Cruise
  • February 5, 2022: 7-Night Eastern Caribbean Cruise
  • February 12, 2022: 7-Night Western Caribbean Cruise
  • February 19, 2022: 7-Night Eastern Caribbean Cruise
  • February 26, 2022: 7-Night Eastern Caribbean Cruise
  • March 5, 2022: 7-Night Eastern Caribbean Cruise

Note that all of these itineraries are aboard the Disney Fantasy and depart from Port Canaveral, Florida. They’re subject to all current health safety protocol, both pre-departure and on-board the ships.

Before we get to editorializing, let’s cover what was offered during the Star Wars Day at Sea on our cruise. This ‘special event’ offers a full day of Star Wars activities including guest presenters, over a dozen meet & greet characters, live shows, costume celebrations, movie screenings, family trivia, a ship-wide scavenger hunt, youth club activities with BB-8, themed dinner menus, and special merchandise offerings.

To be blunt, Star Wars Day at Sea played zero role in us booking this cruise. We’re not fans of Pirate Night or Frozen Fun, and expected this to be more of the same. In some ways, it was–with Star Wars Day at Sea following a similar formula as those offerings, particularly Frozen Fun. However, this was more substantive and just flat out better.

disney star cruise ship

Star Wars Day at Sea actually began the night before the festivities began with Darth Vader ‘taking over’ the ship in a cute little show. This was not on the cruise Navigator, but everyone’s server told them about the “surprise” at dinner.

Most importantly, the music aboard the ship changed from the normal animated movie soundtracks to the scores from Star Wars , which did a great job in setting the tone.

disney star cruise ship

This also kicked off sales of Star Wars costumes in earnest. It always surprises me how many people buy pirates garb for that underwhelming themed night, but those merchandise sales pale in comparison to the Star Wars items flying off the gift shop shelves that evening. It wouldn’t surprise me if Disney Cruise Line more than makes up the cost of the themed day in costume and merchandise sales.

These would later be worn during the evening’s costume contest. Some of these were surprisingly elaborate (one dude had full Darth Maul face makeup!), but the highlight was probably hearing kids interviewed about their costumes, and them giving amusing responses.

disney star cruise ship

Throughout the day that followed, a range of characters appeared on the top deck and atrium of the Disney Fantasy.

Disney Cruise Line advertises “over a dozen Star Wars Characters–including Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO and Darth Vader” at Star Wars Day at Sea, and we were pleased to see some deeper cuts in addition to those high profile characters.

disney star cruise ship

As always, Stormtroopers were one of the biggest highlights. Their ability to deliver serious yet comedic moments and fun interactions is what makes them one of the best free-roaming characters in the parks and aboard the cruise ships.

We saw them throughout the day both in the atrium and in the pool areas, and the interactions were always fun. Unfortunately, I never once had my camera or phone on me while they were out and about, so here’s a picture of my cappuccino from Vista Cafe, instead.

disney star cruise ship

The seats around Vista Cafe were perfect for people-watching and spontaneous character interactions. We saw Zam Wesell a number of times, as well as some others.

It was amusing to guests notice these characters wandering around; you could almost see the wheels turning as people tried to ascertain whether they were other guests in costume or character performers.

disney star cruise ship

We also watched a number of BB-8 races from up by Vista Cafe.

It’s a simple concept, but people seemed to absolutely love participating–and observing–these races.

disney star cruise ship

We are total suckers for guest lecturers aboard Disney Cruise Line (we’d love to see far more of these), and Star Wars Day at Sea brought Amy Ratcliffe, author of Women of the Galaxy, among other things.

She detailed her path from fan to author, and also highlighted the strong women of the Star Wars universe. Her Q&A afterwards was interesting, and her responses to a number of questions, including one about toxicity in fandom, particularly illuminating…and diplomatic.

disney star cruise ship

Jedi Training Academy: Trials of the Temple was held in the Walt Disney Theatre, another popular offering for families with kids.

Speaking of the theatre(s), throughout the cruise, late night showings of Star Wars movies were shown. I hadn’t seen any of the original trilogy on the big screen since the late 1990s, so it was very cool to revisit these in Buena Vista Theatre.

disney star cruise ship

The Star Wars “Voyage Through the Galaxy” dinner menu had items named after things from the universe, but most were not overtly “Star Wars.” Desserts were the one exception to this.

In general, this was probably one of the better dinner menus we had during the entire cruise.

disney star cruise ship

Our Star Wars Day at Sea ended with the “Summon the Force” stage show that features a litany of characters engaging in the saga’s most iconic moments, and culminates in a fireworks show (the second of the cruise). In some of our Disney Cruise Line reports, I’ve been pretty critical of shows and deck parties like this one.

Thankfully, Summon the Force was not awful. It was a pretty straightforward montage show with great visuals and a sense of tension–it was fun and reasonably well-presented. “Not awful” isn’t exactly effusive praise, but Summon the Force was lightyears better than the other deck party shows we’ve seen aboard Disney Cruise Line, almost all of which talk down to audiences and aren’t aimed at anyone over the age of 6.

disney star cruise ship

One of the reasons Summon the Force works well is because it strikes the same tone at the Star Wars films, and resonates emotionally thanks to the soundtrack.

It’s exactly what you’d expect, which is a good thing. This is especially noticeable given how the Frozen and Pirates shows deviating from what gives those films heart and appeal. In general, this is why Star Wars Day at Sea succeeds–because it hits the same emotional notes as the films, and presents offerings of substance that are fairly satisfying for Star Wars fans.

disney star cruise ship

On a related note, I’m not sure where to head with our Disney Cruise Line coverage next. Whenever we get off a cruise, I’m really hyped about it, and jot down a ton of post ideas. Without fail, something else comes up, the hype fades a bit, and my plans change.

Totally out of the question is a trip report for this cruise, as it was a pretty laid back experience and I’m not sure there’s much value in “reporting” that we did nothing over and over. Circling back and doing a cruise report from our Alaska cruise is within the realm of possibilities, as are more restaurant reviews (although do those really serve much of a purpose?), a review of this itinerary, and ship reviews or comparisons. If you have any feedback about what you’d like or don’t care to see, we’re all ears!

I’ve been waiting for an Alaskan cruise trip report! I’d still love to read this as we sail out this year. I’ve been on all the ships but would love to read reviews of itineraries. I love your DCL coverage and rely on it along with Disneycruiselineblog to inform my decisions!

' src=

I think at this point you’ve sailed on all four ships and done several itineraries. I would love more articles comparing and giving guides for ships and ports.

' src=

I vote for all the DCL content you mention above. Compared to the parks, there are not so many useful reviews and articles about restaurants, entertainment, and port options, and your articles here would be really appreciated 🙂 Keep your hype list! 😉

We just did a SWDAS cruise in January. It was amazing to see how many people were in full on costumes. Even though it was just one day that was the theme day, I feel like the fact that it’s a Star Wars Cruise definitely is evident throughout the entire cruise. We didn’t mind because my husband and son are big fans and myself and my daughter have seem them all and enjoy them enough, but people I saw people commenting on Facebook that it was too much Star Wars, and I agree if it’s not your thing it can be a lot. My favorite part was definitely watching the original trilogy late at night on the big screen with my husband and son.

' src=

Alana, we are doing the Star Wars Cruise in Feb 2020 the actual Star Wars Day falls on my son 12th birthday so he is excited. My question is since you have done the cruise recently is there anything on Star Wars Day you didn’t do but wished you have and what was your highlight. Thank you.

' src=

I would like to hear about your dining experiences on Disney cruise line and if they have been consistent from ship to ship. Are you able to get tables for 2? Or are you seated with other families?

I’ve often thought that I would feel a bit out of place in the main dining rooms at Disney cruise line.

' src=

Being seated with other families is of a random order. My first cruise with my family was seated with another, but we had no idea that it was part of the protocol. I asked kindly if we could seat separately simply because we were uncomfortable seating with other families (my parents don’t speak English very well and have never understood this concept). Since then, I have learned that if you simply call ahead with your reservation number, you can request to sit with just your party. This proved very useful for my first time taking my now-husband. The two of us had a great time being serviced by ourselves for dinner.

' src=

my family is a party of 2. on our first cruise we were seated with another couple. On our 2nd cruise we took 2 teenagers with us and we were a party of 4 setaed alone. cruise 3 we traveled with another family part of 6, and the 8 of us were seated together at 1 table. cruise 4 we were a party of 2 again. we were supposed to be seated with 2 other parties of 2, but alas there was only 4 of us at the table.

In both of my small party travels we have made and continued contact with our friends. on cruise 1 Cathy and Jerry were a married couple who we just fell in love with and wish every day we could go on another cruise with at any time. on cruise 4 we met up with Christy and Jason, another married couple that are just the best… Jerry and my Husband were both born in the same small town population 400 in the Eastern Plains of Colorado… and we met on a cruise leaving England headed for the USA.

Yes you can get a table for 2 if you ask, but take that risk, you might get sat with another couple and just have the best dinner mates you will ever have!

' src=

Put me down for the Alaska Trip Report! I know these are pretty labour intensive for you, but I really do enjoy them. Even a truncated version would be a hit with me, if that’s more feasible

' src=

I wish I would have known or read you were going to be on the ship. We sailed the same one! I love reading your content and getting all the up to date news!

' src=

I’d love to see review/comparison of the different ships. Feel like that might be a big factor when we decide to pull the trigger on a Disney cruise.

Best Disney cruise ships for everyone — even Disney adults

Ashley Kosciolek

Disney cruises are the stuff of magic, but they're also magically expensive. Before you shell out thousands per day on a vacation, you likely want to know: What's the best Disney ship for fans? What's the best Disney ship for adults? Which ship, if any, will work for me if I'm traveling by myself or with babies, kids or teens?

Disney Cruise Line is a brand that excels at providing both fun and luxurious experiences. With a fleet that has just three classes and five ships, Disney can focus on making sure that each vessel lives up to The Mouse's high standards for many types of cruisers. In other words, whichever vessel you choose, you'll likely have a great time.

However, there are subtle nuances that determine the best Disney ships for certain travelers. I'll help you figure out which Disney cruise ship is best so you can get the most out of a voyage in the happiest place on the high seas.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Disney Fantasy: Best Disney cruise ship for adults

disney star cruise ship

Because the line excels at providing family-friendly and kid-focused amenities, when it comes to a Disney cruise, adults often wonder whether they would enjoy themselves if they were to sail. Fortunately, the answer is almost always yes — Disney cruise ships are great for adults .

Disney Cruise Line does the little things well. Travelers of all ages can enjoy character interactions and appreciate thoughtfully laid-out cabins.

If you're worried you'll be outnumbered by kids or elicit weird looks for sailing as a Disney adult, never fear. Bring your mouse ears, and prepare for some fun. Or, if you want, avoid the kitschy Disney stuff, and enjoy the terrific entertainment and superb food offerings mixed with stellar service.

All Disney ships have adults-only sun decks and pool areas that are closed to kids, as well as bars and clubs that are off-limits to anyone younger than 18.

With that in mind, one vessel stands out for the older set: Disney Fantasy.

The ship boasts a dozen bars, including three exclusive to the vessel. In addition to bars in the atrium, by the pool and sun deck, and in the theater, you'll also find the Europa area, which is only for adults after 9 p.m.

It's got five watering holes; among them are an Irish pub and a lounge that offers views of major European cities via LED screens that change every 15 minutes. But the standouts are French Champagne bar Ooh La La; La Piazza, which is carousel themed and gives off Italian vibes; and The Tube, a club with a London Underground theme that hosts trivia by day.

What's also great about the ship for adults is that it's a mid-sized vessel. It's big enough to offer plenty of activities but smaller than the new behemoth Disney Wish, which features grown-up areas that are spread out instead of conveniently clustered like they are on Disney Fantasy.

Finally, if you're an adult who's hoping to steer as clear of children as possible while still enjoying your own Disney experience, know that Disney Fantasy has a tremendous kids club. It features Andy's room from "Toy Story," as well as a Tinkerbell-themed play area and the Marvel Superhero Academy, where little ones can learn to fight crime. It's so impressive that kids likely won't want to leave, meaning fewer little ones will be running wild around the ship.

Disney Wish: Best Disney cruise ship for families

disney star cruise ship

Disney cruises are, hands down, the best in the industry when it comes to sailings for families with children . From thoughtful cabin design that allows for more privacy and bathroom space to character interactions, free soda, complimentary first-run movie screenings and special menus in the restaurants, the brand understands and delivers on what appeals to the youngest cruisers.

Parents will love the line's infant and toddler babysitting offerings and little — but significant — touches like the availability of kid-size life jackets by the pools.

However, the true standout is the children's programming in the onboard youth centers. Disney's sizeable kids clubs are supervised and designed to include immersive experiences that tie in with Disney's franchises and characters. (Think "Toy Story," Marvel, "Star Wars" and more.)

The best Disney ship for families is Disney Wish ; it earns high marks whether you're traveling with babies, toddlers, school-age kids or teens.

Below, I'll explain why the line's newest, largest vessel is ideal.

Disney Wish: Best Disney cruise ship for kids

disney star cruise ship

Disney Cruise Line's kids club, the Oceaneer Club (for ages 3-12), is cavernous. It has five separate sections on Disney Wish, including Mickey and Minnie's Captain's Deck and Fairytale Hall, which offer climbing structures and princess play for younger children. Kids will also be able to walk into a scene from "Star Wars" in Star Wars Cargo Bay, learn how to save the world at the Marvel Superhero Academy and participate in STEM projects at the Walt Disney Imagineering Lab.

The spaces are so fun that you're likely to see very little of your children during a sailing on Disney Wish. You might even be disappointed that you can't spend time there yourself.

The best part? It's all free, and there is dedicated youth staff that oversees each day's activities, as well as nighttime movie-watching and dance parties while parents enjoy some time out and about. Oh, and did I mention there's a slide that takes kids from the ship's stunning atrium down one deck to the entrance?

disney star cruise ship

Outside the Oceaneer Club, kids will love Disney Wish's top-deck activities, which include mini-golf, an obstacle course, pools and waterslides. Don't miss the AquaMouse, a raft-based attraction with digital elements and see-through tubing.

disney star cruise ship

The whole family can also enjoy Pirate Night, offered once per sailing. On the agenda are fireworks and appearances by Captain Jack Sparrow. Passengers are wholeheartedly encouraged to dress up.

Regarding dining, children will enjoy not only special kids' menus but also the themed, interactive atmosphere in two of the ship's three main dining rooms: Worlds of Marvel and Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure . The former amuses passengers with Ant-Man's antics after he accidentally shrinks Disney Wish with a Quantum Core. The latter is an engagement celebration for Anna and Kristoff, featuring live characters.

Disney Wish: Best Disney cruise ship for teens and tweens

disney star cruise ship

For teens and tweens, Disney Wish's dedicated lounges are the feature that's likely to be most enticing, offering a more relaxed "come and go" atmosphere that's supervised but less structured. Both clubs have areas for foosball and mocktails, and they offer a general meeting place for kids in the following age groups to find their friends and hang out.

Edge is the vessel's tween club, which offers video and board games and brightly colored decor for the 11- to 14-year-old set.

disney star cruise ship

Vibe is the teen club for 14- to 17-year-olds. It's a slightly more muted space with giant TVs for movie watching and video game play, plus a high-top bar area for teens needing a place to plug in their laptops and tablets. A second room can be sealed off for use by 18- to 20-year-olds on voyages with enough young adults to warrant it.

And for older kids into "Star Wars," the Star Wars Hyperspace Lounge is an immersive way to enjoy some themed fun in a more adult setting. The bar — open to all ages until 9 p.m., when it becomes an adults-only venue — takes visitors on a trip through the galaxy. A screen behind the bar changes every few minutes, with the room making noises and jumping to "hyperspace" to reach the next destination.

disney star cruise ship

For anyone younger than the legal drinking age, the venue's menu offers some nonalcoholic options, including the Cloud City (oat milk with blue raspberry and ice cream) and the Temple Twist (apple, mint, pineapple, ginger beer and kiwi).

disney star cruise ship

When they aren't busy lounging, teens might also enjoy Uncharted Adventure, a digital scavenger hunt that will take them around the ship to find interactive clues using their mobile phones. A bit of magic is involved, but it's the kind even a skeptical teenager might find interesting.

For more sporty fun, teens can check out the ship's waterslides or the indoor sports court, where they can play basketball or foosball.

Disney Wish: Best Disney cruise ship for babies and toddlers

disney star cruise ship

Returning on Disney Wish is parent favorite It's a Small World Nursery. The expanded space caters to children from 6 months to 3 years old. It has a nap room with cribs, a changing area and an activity room with floormats, age-appropriate toys and a TV.

Dedicated counselors offer group babysitting in the nursery for the littlest cruisers on a first come, first served basis for $9 per hour for the first child and $8 per hour for any additional children in the same family. Counselors will feed and change, as necessary, any infants or toddlers in their care.

Disney Magic: Best Disney cruise ship for singles

disney star cruise ship

Built in 1998, Disney Magic is the oldest vessel in the Disney Cruise Line fleet. That means it's also one of the least expensive, which is important if you're sailing alone and stuck paying a single supplement. (Disney ships do not have cabins for one.)

Additionally, it's one of the two smallest Disney Cruise Line ships. Its size creates a more intimate experience, particularly in the adult areas, where you can meet other cruisers traveling alone.

Disney Magic retains a nautical feel that's more mature than what you'll find on Disney Wish, which feels more like a mainstream megaship. However, Magic retains the "wow" factor, featuring well-appointed cabins, excellent dining options and jaw-dropping entertainment that rivals what you'd find on Broadway.

Disney Cruise Line also does a great job of seating solo cruisers together during meals so they don't have to dine alone. If you prefer a table by yourself, ask the dining staff. You can also take meals at the buffet, order room service, or check out one of the ship's alternative eateries, including adults-only Italian restaurant Palo , O'Gill's pub or several poolside venues.

Disney Wonder: Best Disney ship for West Coast cruisers

disney star cruise ship

With Florida serving as the undisputed cruise capital of the world, travelers living on the West Coast are often out of luck. Not so with Disney Cruise Line.

The best Disney ship for people wishing to set sail from California or Vancouver is Disney Wonder. One of the line's two oldest vessels, it runs three- and four-night springtime voyages from San Diego to Baja California with calls on Ensenada, Mexico, and five- to nine-night Alaska sailings departing from Vancouver in the summer and fall.

Don't let the ship's age fool you. The line does a tremendous job of maintaining it, so it looks nearly new. Service, food and entertainment live up to Disney's high standards.

If you're looking for something different than Disney's standard West Coast offerings, you can also snag one-way repositioning voyages when the ship changes locations seasonally. Examples include sailings from San Diego to Vancouver or from Vancouver to Honolulu.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Disney Cruise Line ship

Disney Dream: Best Disney cruise ship for longer voyages

disney star cruise ship

Most of Disney's sailings are short, whisking passengers away for three to five days. The itineraries are fairly standard, featuring port calls in the Caribbean and the Bahamas, including the line's private island, Castaway Cay .

If you're craving something a bit longer or want to visit a far-flung destination, Disney Dream is the ship you'll want to book.

Offering 10-, 11- and 12-night voyages in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, Disney Dream takes passengers to ports like Rome (Civitavecchia), Florence (Livorno), Barcelona, Athens, Santorini, Southampton, Reykjavik and Copenhagen.

Remember that all of Disney Dream's Europe cruises depart from within Europe, so you'll need to factor flights — potentially costly open-jaw ones — into your budget.

Bottom line

Disney has something for every cruiser, regardless of age, whether you're a parent or a Disney adult, and whether you choose to cruise alone or with friends or family.

The sailings can be expensive, so you'll want to book the best ship for you before you make such a sizeable investment. Luckily, Disney Cruise Line's five ships offer a variety of experiences for all sorts of travelers.

Windstar Cruises reveals first details of new ship Star Seeker

Vessel to feature 112 suites, including two new accomodation categories, when it debuts in 2026

Windstar Cruises reveals first details of new ship Star Seeker

Windstar Cruises

By Alex Smith | 22 August 2024

Windstar Cruises has revealed the first details for its new ship Star Seeker, which is set to begin sailing in January 2026.

Star Seeker will accommodate up to 224 guests in 112 suites, all but 10 of which will feature a full private veranda or floor-to-ceiling infinity window. The ship will also include five dining options, a full-service spa with an entrance from the deck above, a fitness facility and an updated design for the returning Watersports Platform, which lets guests access the sea directly from the ship.

“Guests aboard Star Seeker will experience a sense of tranquility in their suites; they are designed to be an oasis for relaxation,” says Stijn Creupelandt, vice president of hotel operations at Windstar Cruises. “We used light wood and a soothing colour palette of light blues, greens and natural browns – elements that reflect our Star Class style. Inspired by the sea, sky and landscapes, these colours and textures create a serene atmosphere perfect for a relaxing getaway. In the ship’s public spaces and restaurants, you’ll find more vibrant hues inspired by sunrises and sunsets, including warm yellows, golds and oranges, ensuring a harmonious blend of elegance and comfort throughout the ship.”

Among its selection of suites, Star Seeker will feature two Horizon Owner’s Suites, a new category for the cruise line. The suites will be located at the aft of the ship on deck seven, with each offering a wrap-around balcony and the possibility to combine with adjacent suites for additional space. Also new for Windstar will be 30 Infinity Suites, which will feature a floor-to-ceiling infinity window that slides half-way down from the top.

MSC Seascape

Infinity Suites will be a new category of accommodation for Windstar Cruises

All suites will include a mini-bar and refrigerator, interactive TV, fresh fruit and waffle weave robes and slippers. The four highest suite categories – Horizon, Star, Classic, Deluxe – add other amenities such as an Illy espresso machine, canapes service and fresh flowers.

Star Seeker is currently under construction at West Sea shipyard in Portugal. Once delivered, it will make a maiden voyage from Malaga, Spain, to the cruise line’s headquarters in Miami, where a christening event will be held. It will then sail a series of voyages in the Caribbean, before redeploying to Alaska for a full season of summer cruises.

Windstar will debut a sister ship, Star Explorer, in December 2026.

Booking Tips for Your Mexican Cruise

Best times to book.

Plan Ahead: Booking your Mexican cruise early can often lead to better deals and a wider selection of cabin options. Many cruise lines offer early booking discounts, so keep an eye out for these promotions.

Consider Off-Season: Traveling during Mexico’s off-peak season can result in more affordable cruise prices. The months outside of peak tourist seasons may offer lower rates and fewer crowds, allowing you to enjoy a more relaxed experience.

Last-Minute Deals: If you have flexibility in your schedule, consider monitoring last-minute cruise deals. Sometimes, cruise lines offer significant discounts on remaining cabins close to the sail date.

Understanding the Fine Print

Review Cancellation Policies: Before booking your Mexican cruise, make sure to understand the cruise line’s cancellation policies. Knowing the conditions under which you can cancel and potential penalties can help you make informed decisions.

Gratuities and Fees: Familiarize yourself with the gratuity and fee structure of the cruise line. Some cruise packages may include gratuities, while others require additional payments for services like specialty dining, shore excursions, or onboard activities.

Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance for your Mexican cruise. Travel insurance can provide coverage for unforeseen events like trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage, offering you peace of mind during your journey.

Leveraging Deals and Discounts

Sign Up for Alerts: Register for email alerts from cruise lines or travel websites to stay informed about upcoming deals and promotions for Mexican cruises. Being among the first to know about discounts can help you secure the best price for your trip.

Group Bookings: If you’re traveling with a group or family, inquire about group booking discounts. Some cruise lines offer reduced rates or additional perks for booking multiple cabins together.

Member Benefits: Check if you qualify for any membership discounts, such as AARP or AAA, which may provide exclusive offers on Mexican cruises. Being a member of certain organizations can unlock additional savings for your trip.

You’ve now explored the enticing world of Mexican cruises, filled with sunny beaches, rich culture, and delectable cuisine. From the diverse coastlines to the array of activities at ports, Mexico offers a vibrant experience. When choosing a cruise line, factors like routes, amenities, and costs play a crucial role.
