Sombat Tour Company Review

Sombat Tour Review

Last updated on December 11, 2023

Posted on December 11, 2023 April 5, 2023 by Kamolchat Thanaditsayakun

Sombat Tour is a well-known and respected public transport company, operating a fleet of modern buses on routes across Thailand, mostly departing from Bangkok. In the main, they operate three different standards of buses – Supreme, Super and Star with differing levels of luxury across the three, including reclining chairs, massage chairs, and personal TV screens. You could argue that the quality of their buses is good enough to rival those in Western countries, and their plan certainly seems to be to provide a better quality of service in Thailand by giving better comfort levels and facilities onboard their buses. With plenty of other bus companies operating across Thailand, how does Sombat Tour compare in terms of prices, schedules and service? Our Sombat Tour company review will answer those questions and more.

About Sombat Tour

Sombat Tour bus

Sombat Tour is a very well established public transport company with their roots dating back to 1942, when the business was formed under the name Tek Chiang. In 1978 they changed the name to Thepsombat Company Limited and began trading as Sombat Tour, so they have been operating public transport services for close to 80 years now. Initially, they operated a small number of routes but have expanded a lot over the last few decades to cover all regions of Thailand to some extent. In total, they operate 30 different routes, with the majority of these departing from or going to the country’s capital city, Bangkok. Some of the most popular routes include Bangkok to Phuket, Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Bangkok to Hua Hin, Bangkok to Koh Samui, and Bangkok to Surat Thani , while routes departing from other cities include Chiang Mai to Hua Hin, and Chiang Rai to Nakhon Phanom.

Sombat Tour does not operate any cross-border routes, so if you’re looking to travel from Thailand into a neighboring country, you’ll need to consider different bus companies, or catch a flight. Another option is to use Sombat Tour to get you close to the border but cross the border independently before picking up another bus on the other side; a good idea if you were intent on traveling with Sombat Tour as much as possible!

Mo Chit Bus Terminal

Schedules vary on all their routes, with some routes only having one or two buses each way per day, while others have multiple buses to choose from. Bangkok to Chiang Mai is a good example, with around 20 departures from Bangkok each day, departing from Mo Chit and/or Vibhavadi and you can choose which type of bus you want to travel on depending on the schedule. They have Star, Super and Supreme services as well as a VIP 20 bus. These and the Supreme buses are the most expensive as both are VIP types. More on the bus types in a moment. Another good thing to look out for is that Sombat Tour provides special ‘Lady Buses’ as they call them, which are special buses put on just for female passengers on Fridays and Sundays from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. This is great news if you’re a female traveling alone.

Let’s take a closer look at the different buses that Sombat Tour operates. Star buses have the cheapest tickets, so consider these if you’re traveling on a budget. Even these most affordable bus services are very comfortable as they offer seats that recline and have calf support for your legs, and there is a steward onboard serving snacks and beverages. The Super class buses are similar – both have four seats to a row – but these could be double-decker buses and may include massage chairs and personal TV screens in addition to those other comforts. Supreme class buses are the VIP types that you may have traveled on with other bus companies. These have only three seats per row, giving you larger seats and more room around you. All seats have a massage option, and they recline further than those on the more standard buses.

Tickets to travel with Sombat Tour are generally quite comparable to buses operated by other companies, but you will probably find you’re paying a few more baht to travel with Sombat Tour. You could argue that you’re getting a great service for that slight extra cost, as even Sombat Tour’s standard buses include more than some other provider’s luxury buses, so you are getting more for your money anyway.

Sombat Tour Customer Reviews

Sombat Tour VIP 20 seat

The buses operated by Sombat Tour certainly appear to be very well equipped, comfortable and modern, according to their website, but are they really as good as they say they are? Looking at reviews of Sombat Tour that have been left by previous passengers is the best way to judge this.

Many passengers use the travel website, 12Go.asia to book their bus tickets in Thailand. On this travel booking site you can enter the route and dates that you want to travel, then compare all the different transport options. For popular routes like Bangkok to Chiang Mai , they sell tickets for Sombat Tour as well as other bus companies so you can check the prices and bus types, and read reviews, before going ahead to book.

At the time of writing, over 18,700 customers have booked bus tickets with Sombat Tour through 12Go , and there are over 1,200 reviews of the company. The overall rating is 4.4 out of 5 stars, which is very good. 62% of customers gave 5 stars and 25% gave 4 stars, with very low percentages giving 3, 2 or 1 stars, so customers have definitely been impressed and very happy according to these Sombat Tour reviews.

Looking at some of the recent comments on the reviews, passengers have raved over how comfortable and well equipped the buses were, that the staff were friendly and the driving was good, that they arrived on time, and that it was good value for money. There were a few negative points mentioned in recent reviews. Several customers said that there were no announcements in English and therefore they had trouble figuring out what was going on when the bus stopped for a break. Some others mentioned that there was no Wi-Fi, but we could not see any claims that they offer Wi-Fi – perhaps this is a service that could be added in the future. Another comment was about the air conditioning being too cold, but this is a very standard complaint on buses in Thailand and we recommend always bringing a few extra layers.

Should You Travel with Sombat Tour?

Chiang Mai to Bangkok by Bus

With generally very good reviews, it seems as though Sombat Tour is striving to, and reaching their goals, to provide a great service. In countries like Thailand, keeping to schedules to arrive and depart on time is a common problem, but it looks as though Sombat Tour is good at keeping to their scheduled timetables and that they genuinely want to provide a comfortable and affordable service to their passengers. With this in mind, we can’t see any reason not to recommend traveling with Sombat Tour, even if they might be very slightly more expensive than some of their competitors. Remember, you can check prices for Sombat Tour and other bus companies on the travel website, 12Go , and make up your own mind.

How to go from Bangkok to Phuket

sombat tour phuket to bangkok

This guide can help you trade the buzz and energy of the Thai capital for the glinting beaches of the country’s largest and most popular island. With info on the fastest, cheapest, and less-trodden ways to get from Bangkok to Phuket, it’s got the lowdown all travelers will need to go from pumping Khaosan Road to palm-fringed Andaman sands.

With a distance of just over 840 kilometers between the two, you can complete the trip in a single morning if you opt for the air. Alternatively, save your baht for cold Chang beers overlooking the Phuket sunset and choose a longer trip that could cost less.

Bangkok to Phuket by plane

Bangkok to Phuket by plane

Time – 1.5 hours (flight time only) Price – from $35 to $100 each way – book in advance to save more. Comfort – 5/5

There are more flights from Bangkok to Phuket than you can shake your peanut-topped pad Thai at. Linking Thailand’s sprawling capital to the country’s largest island, they are a popular choice with both locals and travelers looking for the fastest route to the sun, sea, and sand.

There are loads of airlines running the connection. Budget carriers like Nok Air and Thai Lion Air typically have the cheapest tickets. Then you’ve got the pricier services on premium names like Bangkok Airways and Thai Smile – those include checked baggage as standard, so could end up a better bargain if you think you’ve packed a few too many Aloha shirts.

Depending on which airport you want to fly from you have different options of airlines.

Be aware that there are two airports in Bangkok. The domestic and regional hub at Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) tends to have the lowest-cost options. However, it’s usually simpler to hop on a connecting flight at big Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) if you’re coming in on a long-haul and want to take a shortcut to the coast. You can easily search and discover all flight routes and book tickets from both Bangkok airports over on 12Go.asia .

The journey time is typically around 1.5 hours from takeoff to landing. You’ll touchdown in Phuket International Airport on the northern end of the island. Check the views out of the window as you land – they offer a glimpse of those fabled white-sand beaches and coconut palms. At arrivals, there’s a pre-paid taxi stand before the exit with set transfer rates to most of Phuket’s best-known resorts and beaches.

Bangkok to Phuket by bus

Sarasin Bridge, the bridge connecting Phuket with the mainland

Time – around 12-15 hours Price – $19-30 depending on your class of travel Comfort – 4/5

Buses leave regularly from big Bangkok for most of the islands in the south, and Phuket is no different. In fact, it’s one of the best-connected of all Thailand’s beach hubs. That means you have the pick of multiple daily departures, on a whole host of different companies, each offering different comfort levels.

Most will go from the Southern Bus Terminal in Sai Tai Mai. A taxi there from the backpacker hub of Khaosan Road costs around 200 THB ($6.30). Alternatively, a few overnight buses leave from the dedicated Sombat Tour station in Chatuchak, which is a little easier to reach from downtown.

There are loads of different providers operating on the route between Bangkok and Phuket. Some of the top rated include Sombat Tour, Transport Co, Bus Express and Phuket Travel, with the latter touting their VIP class tickets that include extra legroom, snacks, TV entertainment, and air conditioning throughout the journey.

Bangkok to Phuket by bus

It’s always a good idea to book your bus tickets from Bangkok to Phuket in advance online. That’s especially true in the high-season months between November and March, when places fill up with travelers ditching the city for the sands. Check out the search tool over on 12Go.asia to compare prices and get your reservation sorted well before departure.

No ferry is necessary to take you across to Phuket. It might be surrounded by crystal-clear seas, but it’s also conveniently connected to the mainland by bridge. Your arrival point is likely to be the Phuket Bus Terminal 2. A whisker north of Phuket Town and close to Rassada Pier for connections to other Andaman favorites, it’s on the western side of the island, some 30 minutes’ transfer from the popular beach resort of Patong. Be aware that taxis in Phuket can cost an arm and a leg, so it might be worth pre-booking a pick-up.

Bangkok to Phuket by train and bus

Bangkok to Phuket by Train

Time – 16+ hours Price – $40-50 Comfort – 3/5

Unfortunately, there’s no railway line going straight from the gold-tipped temples of Bangkok to the gold-tinted beaches of Phuket. However, lovers of locomotives shouldn’t despair, because you can swap the Thai capital for the Thai coast by hopping on the train to Surat Thani and then changing onto a bus to complete the rest of the journey.

It’s by no means the fastest route down south, but it can be one of the most enjoyable.

It’s by no means the fastest route down south, but it can be one of the most enjoyable. Choose the early morning departure from the departure from the newly opened Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in the capital (a people-watching haven). That way, you’ll chug out through the rice paddies and end the trip gazing at the mist-haloed karst peaks that rise off the Gulf of Thailand. (For a deeper dive into this journey, explore my detailed guide: Bangkok to Phuket by train .)

You could also opt for the overnight train, which takes a little longer but promises to get you to Phuket earlier in the day, perhaps even with time to spare for a dip in the Andaman Sea before evening.

Train at Railway Station Surat Thani

The link from Surat Thani to Phuket takes around five hours. You can book that with several bus or minibus operators, most of which leave from Surat Thani town – a tuk-tuk connection from the train station might be necessary. Expect to pay in the region of $11.50 for that onward ticket.

Getting reservations on Thai trains can be tricky if you’re not from the Land of Smiles. That’s where booking services like 12Go come in. They can take care of all the admin and you’ll just collect your passes right outside the station when you arrive.

Bangkok to Phuket by taxi (private transfer)

Bangkok to Phuket by taxi (private transfer)

Time – 12 hours Price – $390 Comfort – 5/5

If you’re looking to hop to the palm-shaded sands of Phuket from Bangkok in real style, then consider a private taxi transfer. They are never going to be the cheapest form of transport, but do guarantee comfort and simplicity. You’ll get a pickup anywhere in the city you wish, and a drop-off anywhere in Phuket you want. That means door-to-door travel; from one chic hotel to the next.

What’s more, private transfers are typically in deluxe cars with leather upholstered seats, air conditioning, and refreshments provided. The total price is also quoted per vehicle, so this could be the choice for you if you’re traveling as part of a larger group or as a family.

There are oodles of ways to go from Bangkok to Phuket. Whether you whiz to the Andaman coast by air, bus or rail, you can look forward to enjoying Thailand’s biggest island and its wealth of stunning sands and sky-blue seas.

Bangkok to Phuket FAQ

Because there are so many budget airlines running the popular route from Bangkok to Phuket, you might find that flying is actually the cheapest way to get to the island. However, you’ll need to factor in the extra cost of taxis both sides, and add-on baggage if it’s needed. Those could push things just a little higher and make VIP coaches the best-priced route of all. You can easily compare the cost of both options over on 12Go.asia’s booking platform.

Flying – of course! There’s no bus or train that could hope to match the 1.5 hours it takes to jet off from Bangkok and land down in Phuket. It’s important to check what airport your chosen flight is leaving from in the capital. It will either be the smaller Don Mueang International Airport on the north side of the city, or huge Suvarnabhumi Airport to the west. Tickets from both can be booked online via 12Go.asia , where you can also compare and contrast departures at different times throughout the day.

There’s no direct train link between Bangkok and Phuket. However, if you really want to experience the joys of Thai rail, with karst mountains and wild jungles whizzing past your window, it is possible to travel on a combined train and bus link via the city of Surat Thani.

That all depends on what mode of transport you go for. Flights take just 1.5 hours, which means a total travel time of around 4 hours from door to door when you factor in waits in the departure lounge and a transfer after arriving. Buses and trains, meanwhile, can be 12-16 hours, and often go overnight.

Phuket is a wonderworld of glistening beaches and azure seas, all punctuated by bumping party strips in Patong and colorful market towns. You’re going to want to set aside a least three or four days to enjoy the chilled-out vibe of the coast and the beer-fueled hedonism before catching a ferry to bucket-list islands like the Phi Phis. However, it’s also possible to spend whole vacations in Phuket, what with deluxe villas and gorgeous resort hotels aplenty in these parts.

Flight Review: Bangkok Airways ATR 72 Economy Class From Koh Samui To Phuket

  • Bangkok Airways offers up to 7 daily flights between Koh Samui and Phuket, making travel convenient.
  • Samui International Airport has a unique aesthetic, offering a cozy waiting area and free WiFi.
  • ATR flights provide a suitable service for short flights with free luggage, inflight meals, and comfortable seating in exit rows.

On July 28, 2024, I flew on Bangkok Airways from Koh Samui to Phuket as part of a ten-day holiday in the Kingdom of Thailand. Given the country's vastness, there are many destinations to explore, offering unique experiences and cultures. After spending three nights on the island of Koh Samui, I headed to Phuket to experience one of the most famous destinations in Southeast Asia. Here's how the flight went.

Arriving at the airport

I was staying at a hotel close to the airport, so getting there was relatively easy and fast. Bangkok Airways has up to eight daily flights from Koh Samui to Phuket, all operated on the ATR72-600 . Traveling with an industry colleague, we took the first flight off the island, which was scheduled to depart Koh Samui at 08:00 and arrive in Phuket at 09:00 local time.

We arrived at the airport well ahead of time . Being a very small airport, you don't need to get there very early, especially if you only travel with hand luggage. However, we had bags to check in, so we had to join the queue, which was a bit long. However, the check-in agents were quite efficient, so the process went well.

While it may be small, Samui International Airport (USM) has a unique aesthetic, with wooden pillars and a gazebo-style terminal. The rest of the airport looks like a garden-style mall, with a lot of greenery, ponds, a few shops, and a nice view of the distant mountains. After checking in, we made our way to the security checkpoint and gate, which were about five minutes away.

Getting to the gate and boarding

Walking through Koh Samui Airport makes one admire the beauty of smaller airports. Everything is about a five-minute walk away, so you don't have to worry about missing the boarding time if you want to grab a coffee or a quick snack. We quickly got past security and made our way to the gate. The waiting area was also quite cozy, with an excellent view of the runway and various seating options.

The waiting area also has free WiFi and many fans, which are essential in Thailand's hot and humid weather. As our aircraft was being prepared for the flight, we enjoyed one or two takeoffs and landings. A few minutes later, the airline made the boarding calls, and all passengers made their way to the aircraft .

While it looked like a short walk from the gate to the apron, we hopped on one of the shuttle buses, which took us to the aircraft. The boarding process was quite seamless, so all passengers quickly got onto the aircraft, and we were ready for takeoff.

Flight Review: Thai Airways Airbus A350 Economy Class From Bangkok To Taipei

Taking an almost three-hour flight on a widebody was an absolute breeze.

Exit row seats

On this flight, we flew on an eight-year-old ATR72-600, registration HS-PZD. While the aircraft was not in the best shape, the cabin was clean. The plane has 70 economy class seats arranged in a 2-2 configuration. We managed to secure exit row seats at check-in, which typically cost about $14 (400 Baht) . We occupied seats 1A and 1B, which offered a generous amount of legroom.

The flight departed at about 08:07, and we were on our way to our next destination. Given Koh Samui's unique geographical features, the views when taking off and landing are always something to admire. As expected, there was no in-flight entertainment, powerpoints, or WiFi on the flight.

There was one flight attendant on this short 45-minute hop, and as soon as the plane started to level up, she began the meal service. The meal was typically a light snack, including a stuffed pie, fruit, and water. I went for the chicken teriyaki stuffed pie. While it wasn't among the best in-flight meals I've tasted, it was sufficient for a 45-minute flight. The airline also served tea and coffee, but I just drank water.

Landing and disembarking

A few minutes later, the cabin crew began collecting the empty meal packs and trays. Soon after eating, the flight crew announced that we had started making our descent into Phuket. The flight attendant took her seat, which was right in front of us, as we made our approach into Phuket, which provides its own stunning views.

The rest of the flight was uneventful, and we landed safely at Phuket International Airport (HKT). The deplaning process was also quite seamless, with passengers hopping onto one of the airport buses to take us to the terminal. We made our way to the domestic terminal, collected our bags, and ordered a Grab to take us to our hotel. As Phuket is a much bigger city, we drove for nearly an hour from the airport.

Overall, the Bangkok Airways ATR flight provided everything you would need for a very short flight. With one free piece of checked luggage, one free carry-on, and an inflight meal, the service perfectly caters for tourists looking to explore Thailand's various islands and cities. On my flight to Koh Samui, I flew on a Bangkok Airways A319 from Bangkok, and the service was pretty much the same.
