Comprehensive Legazpi Itinerary and Albay travel guide with sample budget and expenses, where to stay and places to visit in Albay.
Dominating the skyline of Legazpi and Albay is Mt.Mayon, the poster girl of the province. Known for its majestic beauty and almost perfect conical shape. Wherever you are in Albay, it seems as if Mt.Mayon is watching you. Indeed, nothing can encompass nature’s prowess and splendor. But there’s more to Albay, this massive province is oozing with raw appeal; flanked by vast, green farmlands, fishing towns, age-old churches, cave systems, aquamarine rivers, and lush mountains. You can also explore its rugged coastline, lapped by blue waters and dappled with tropical islands. Many of the rising tourist spots in Albay are blissfully uncharted by mass tourism, so best to visit soon before it gets too crowded.
To help you plan your trip, here’s a quick Albay + Legazpi Travel Guide with Legazpi itinerary and sample expenses and budget. Feel free to comment below if you want to suggest additional tourist spots in Legazpi and Albay, I didn’t include everything here as I’ve yet to visit them. But since Legazpi is just 3 hours away from my hometown, I can always travel there and update this Albay and Legazpi travel blog in the future.

GETTING AROUND LEGAZPI/ALBAY
Albay is a province in Bicol region, composed of 15 towns and 3 component cities (Legazpi, Tabaco, and Ligao). Most of the tourist spots in Albay are located in Daraga, Camalig, and Jovellar. For island hopping in Albay, it’s near Tabaco. So most likely, these are the areas that you will visit during your Albay and Legazpi itinerary – Daraga, Camalig, Jovellar, Legazpi City, and then Tabaco, if you plan to travel to Mayon Skyline or do island hopping in Albay.
There are many public vehicles in Legazpi and Albay, you can use them to get around.
Tricycles – There’s an abundance of tricycle in Legazpi city center that can take your directly to your destination. This is your best bet if doing a DIY trip, so you’ll be able to visit the places in your Albay and Legazpi itinerary. Rate depends on the distance of your destination. I always use the tricycle when getting around Legazpi, even going to the airport. But always ask and negotiate the price before hopping in. Tricycle drivers in Legazpi are infamous for overcharging tourists. For short distance ride, for example, within Legazpi city center only, it shouldn’t cost you more than ₱20 ($0.38). If you’re in downtown Legazpi and you plan to go to Daraga area, it could cost you roughly ₱100 ($2) up.
Taxi – Cabs are available in Legazpi, always use the meter. But you can charter a taxi for your Legazpi/Albay day tour. If you’ll hire the taxi for a day, make sure you negotiate the price first, discuss the destinations in your Legazpi itinerary first, before hopping in. Usually chartered taxi rates start at roughly ₱3,500 ($67) for a day tour, good for 4 passengers.
BICOL AIRPORT TO HOTEL IN DARAGA (PRIVATE TRANSFER): RESERVE HERE
Jeepneys – A cheap way to get around Legazpi and Albay is by jeepney. Fare starts at ₱10 ($0.19) from Daraga to Legazpi and vice versa. However, you need to know the routes to avoid riding the wrong one. You can read the route painted on the side of the jeepney and ask the driver to make sure it’ll pass by your destination.
Here’s some of the Legazpi jeepney routes that you might use during your Legazpi trip if you want to commute or do a DIY Legazpi itinerary:
- Daraga-Legazpi Loop 1: This is the jeep that you can take to get to Ligñon Hill and Albay Park and Wildlife.
- Daraga – Legazpi (Tahao Road): . This is the jeep that you can take to get to the bus station (Legazpi Grand Central Terminal). You can also leave your luggage at the luggage counter in Pacific Mall while you do your last-minute shopping or at SM Legazpi.

Travel Tip: While you are at it, you may also visit Jovellar Underground River and Falls (Quitinday River and Falls), ask the driver if you can combine the tour. Fare is roughly ₱1000 ($20), good for 5 passengers. Combined tour may take about 5-6 hours, so, that’s a reasonable rate already since you’re hiring the tricycle for half-day.
JOVELLAR UNDERGROUND RIVER AND SIGPIT FALLS (Quitinday Underground River and Falls)
Though popularly known as Quitinday Underground River and Waterfalls, it is actually located in the town of Jovellar in Albay. My guess is, because this is usually combined with a trip to Quitinday Hills, visitors must have assumed at first that it is located in Quitinday. The 2-tiered falls is actually called Sigpit Falls by the locals; its water originates from the Jovellar Underground River. Best time to see its teal water is during summer, as it becomes brownish during the rainy season.

MAYON SKYLINE
Location: Tabaco
About an hour away from Legazpi City is Mayon Skyline, you can visit this before or after your island-hopping trip in Albay since it’s in Tabaco. It has one of the best views of Mayon Volcano, but time your trip during a good weather because Mayon is usually blocked by clouds. Your best bet is an early morning visit as it can get rather cloudy in the afternoon. Otherwise, just try your luck in Cagsawa Ruins, Ligñon Hill, Sumlang Lake, Daraga Church, or Embarcadero.
ALBAY ISLAND HOPPING
Albay isn’t just about Mayon Volcano. There are also islands and beaches that you can visit in the province. A convenient jumping off point of Albay island hopping is Tabaco Port. From here, the islands are about 45 minutes to 1 hour by outrigger boats.
Here are some of the islands that you can visit, they are located in Malilipot, Bacacay, and Tabaco:
- Wara-wara Island

15 Best Things to Do in Legazpi City (the Philippines)
Legpazi City calls itself “the city of fun and adventure” and for good reason. This city is home to Mt. Mayon, a 20 million year old active volcano that offers both wild adventure and captivating history. While you’re here, you have the chance to explore around the base of the volcano with ATV tours, hiking, photography, and more. While capturing unbelievable views, you’ll learn about its active history of eruptions that have wiped out entire populations and desecrated whole villages.
Named after Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, a Spanish conquistador, there is a lot of history and culture to be experienced in Legazpi City. You’ll have the chance to visit monuments which represent the many nationalities who have once called this island home or refuge like the Franciscan church, the Spanish pier, and the Japanese tunnels. From adventure to history and shopping to eating, if Legazpi City isn’t already on your list of places to visit in the Philippines, it absolutely will be after today.
Let’s explore the best things to do in Legazpi City :
1. Cagsawa Ruins Park
Built in 1587 destroyed in 1646, then reconstructed in 1724 and once again destroyed in 1814 (along with thousands of native people)- this Franciscan church certainly has some stories to tell.
On a clear day, Mt. Mayon sits perfectly behind the Cagsawa Ruins separated only by a plain of bright green rice fields.
The church ruins are what mysterious thriller movies are made of.
There is a unique juxtaposition between the crumbling brick church with rogue greenery growing out of its cracks against serene nature that feels pure and wholesome.
It’s an unexpected discovery that gets your mind racing.
You can take ‘the Leaning Tower of Pisa’ style photos or just gawk at the wonder that surrounds this ancient location.
2. Mayon Volcano National Park
You’ll see Mt. Mayon everywhere you go in Legazpi and eventually get curious enough to get a little bit closer.
You can hike along the base of the volcano, take an ATV tour, or go with a Jeepney tour that will take you up to the closes to the observatory.
There are plenty of ways to get a bit more personal with this insane natural wonder.
As Mt. Mayon is an active volcano, you’ll see a puff of smoke coming from its peak and a small cloud of smoke hanging just above it.
It’s so idyllic that it looks like a painting! The base of the mountain consists of flat plains, rice fields, creeks, and rivers, all waiting to be explored.
3. Vera Falls
This stunning waterfall is located between two volcanoes on the other side of Mt. Mayon where you’ll have to cross through a couple of small towns to get there.
You’ll hire a car or join a tour group to take a 40- minute drive from Legazpi center.
Take advantage of the small town prices and culture by asking your driver to stop for a bite to eat.
When you reach the car park, you’ll embark on a walk down a set of 100 jungle stairs that will lead you to the beautiful Vera Falls.
There is a cool and shallow pool of water at the base of the waterfall perfect for splashing about on a hot day in the Philippines.
4. Japanese Tunnels
As you may know, the Philippines were caught up in WWII with a Japanese invasion that has left its mark on the country in many ways, including left over infrastructure.
In Oriental-Legazpi, you can visit a Japanese-dug tunnel from 1941. Back in the day, the tunnel stretched all the way to city hall.
Today, the tunnel isn’t quite as long but still offers a decent amount of crawl space to get your heart racing.
Climb around through the tunnel where the height ranges from 3-4 feet tall.
It is set seemingly in the middle of nowhere; a jungle tunnel that the Japanese thought no one would ever find.
5. Quitinday Underground River
It’s worth it to visit Legazpi just to experience the Quitinday Underground River.
Hire a driver to take the 30-minute drive.
Get out and walk 500m along a jungle path until you get to a small watering hole.
At first glance, it looks like there’s not much to be seen…but this is only the beginning.
For ₱100, a tour guide on site will take you rafting through the underground river where you’ll see a complex system of natural caves that have been formed by water erosion.
Some caves you can walk through with small waterfalls at your feet.
Others you will raft through, like the Calabidongan Cave, otherwise known as “Cave of Bats”. If you’re brave enough, take a cliff dive into a pool of natural aquamarine water.
6. Daraga Church
This church is so majestic that it doesn’t even look real.
Set atop a hill with Mt. Mayon in the background, this white towering piece of architecture looks like every castle from a Disney movie ever.
But dig a little bit deeper and you’ll discover that this church has served as a pillar of faith in this community since it was built by Franciscan missionaries in 1773.
During the church’s 230-year life, it has seen so much including a devastating volcano eruption in 1814 that killed 2,00 people, as well as centuries of national instability with wars, invasions, and corruption.
7. Colonial Grill
In Legazpi City, there is a Filipino restaurant you have to try. It is mid-range in price, has plenty of space for big groups, and their food keeps them standing as a local favorite.
Check out Colonial Grill’s “Best Sellers” list full of dishes that never disappoint, such as Buko Chopseuy, Spicy Shrimp, and Tinapa rice.
Portions come out huge in family-style serving dishes so you and your crew can try a little bit of everything.
But, you mustn’t leave without trying the Sili Ice Cream made with chilies- it is to die for.
The staff is friendly and accommodating, so if you have any questions about the menu or want some recommendations, they are happy to oblige.
8. ATV Tour
You’ll find many ATV tour companies in Legazpi City but Your Brother Travel and Tours is the most popular. These friendly and experienced tour guides will take you on the ride of your life around Mt. Mayon and the gorgeous scenery below.
Visit the ruins, ride along the river, check out some free flowing lava- it’s really an unforgettable experience.
There are plenty of tours to choose, some lasting 45-minutes and others lasting 4 hours! No matter your skill, experience, or age, the tour leaders will find a way to comfortably accommodate you.
Fun Fact: Zac Efron went on an ATV tour with Your Brother Travel and Tours when he was last in Manila for a concert.
9. Pacific Mall
Get an everyday local experience by shopping or perusing at Pacific Mall.
Although the mall isn’t massive, you can find any basics you need here: flip flops, backpacks, sunscreen, etc.
There’s also a Robinson’s Supermarket so you can stock up on snacks and toiletries, too.
But the real reason to visit the Pacific Mall is the food! There are plenty of small food stands selling Filipino and western (ish) food, along with pots of authentic Legazpi dishes where you can point and choose what you’d like.
10. Lignon Hill Nature Park
Up a 156-meter high hill in Legazpi City, you’ll find only the most carefree, spontaneous, and brave souls ready to take on some adventure.
Jump on the 320-meter long zipline where you’ll soar down the mountain with an incredible view of Mt. Mayon on your left and the green grassy plains far below.
Lignon Hill Nature Park is up so high that it offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the valley and is the perfect place to watch the sunset and sunrise.
You can hike up the steep hill anytime you’d like with the Kapit Tuko Trail (Lizard Grip Trail) taking just 10 minutes- but I must warn you, it’s a challenge.
11. Bar 101
If you’re looking for a little nightlife in Legazpi City, you’ve got to go to Bar 101. This is the spot where locals go to play billiards next to a huge backdrop of the Beatles, listen to live music under fluorescent lights, get loose on the dance floor, visit the private karaoke room and drink some cold beers with some friendly strangers.
Technically, you’re not supposed to smoke here but it seems that no one really follows that rule.
Open until midnight!
12. Albay Park and Wildlife
Albay Park and Wildlife has everything a family, couple, or even a solo traveler would need to have an unforgettable day.
With over 300 animals belonging to 75 different species, there is a lot to see here.
You’ll find the rare Philippine Hawk Eagle, iguanas, pythons, deer, pigs, crocodiles and more.
A very interesting feature here is a museum with embalmed animals like a two-headed baby Carabao and a Megamouth Shark.
Rent a bicycle and tour the park which offers shady trees that are perfect for when you need a rest.
Take a small boat out on the lagoon, rent a cottage for a nap or overnight stay, or even go fishing on designated days.
13. Albay Capitol Atrium Art Gallery
Get in touch with your inner art critic at Albay Capitol Atrium Art Gallery.
While the space is small, the talented exhibitions fill it easily.
You’ll see work from local artists in many different forms.
There are paintings and photographs, live music, body art, and sometimes you’ll catch an artist in the act of creating a masterpiece right before your eyes.
This is a perfect place to go and chat with local artists who are more than happy to socialize with museum-goers.
14. Bob Marlin Restaurant
Down on Rizal Avenue is Bob Marlin Restaurant that serves local style of Filipino food called ‘Bicolano’ as well as, traditional Filipino and Western dishes- there’s something here for everyone.
Try Ziggy’s Sisig Krispy for the best sisig you’ve ever had or the Kare Kare with oxtail and Beef Laman for a traditional dish you’ll never forget.
This is your chance to try true Filipino food!
The atmosphere here is super laidback where you can just rock up and have a seat.
If you’re rolling in a big group, feel free to call ahead to reserve a table.
If you’ve looking to have a party in Legazpi with catered food, Bob Marlin Restaurant has got your back.
15. Legazpi Boulevard
Yes, Legazpi Boulevard offers stunning views of Mt. Mayon across a glistening lake that reflects the sunset in the evening, but there is so much more to be enjoyed.
Sit down at one of the many restaurants and cafes that line the boulevard with gorgeous views, go on a 3 kilometer run, or join in on some of the cities athletic events that take place here like the Mayon Triathalon, Ultramarathon, and dragon boat festivals.

Local News | Stevie Wonder coming to Baltimore’s CFG Bank Arena during tour leading up to Election Day
The string of 10 October performances, titled “Sing Your Song! As We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart,” comes at the “height of a critical election season and a pivotal juncture in American politics and culture” and serves as a call for “joy over anger, kindness over recrimination, peace over war,” according to the tour announcement .
The performances are being produced by Wonder Productions and promoted by AEG Presents in partnership with Free Lunch and will take the “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)” singer to Pittsburgh, New York and Philadelphia before Baltimore, Greensboro, Atlanta, Detroit, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Grand Rapids.
The musician, who released a single titled “Can We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart” in August, will be offering a “designated amount” of free tickets to “those in our communities who are already working tirelessly to fix our nation’s broken heart,” the announcement says. Before the release of his latest single, he performed “Higher Ground” last month to a roaring crowd at the Democratic National Convention .
He played Baltimore’s CFG Bank Arena when it was known as the Royal Farms Arena, in 2015.
“Hello B-Mo,” he said to the Charm City crowd nearly a decade ago . “It is truly an honor to be here with you.”

5 Must-Visit Day Trips From Halifax, Nova Scotia
There’s so more to Nova Scotia than its capital city.

The Bluenose II arrives to its home port of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Built by Smith and Rhuland it was constructed to match the same plans as the original Bluenose. Angus J. Walters, captain of the first Bluenose served as a consultant on the project. In 1971 the Bluenose II became Nova Scotia's sailing ambassador.
There’s a lot to see and do in Halifax—it’s the largest city east of Montreal, and while it’s much smaller than its contemporaries in the rest of Canada, there are still endless attractions and restaurants to explore in the capital of Nova Scotia.
That said—if you’re visiting Halifax, it’s worth it to explore outside of the city as well. Nova Scotia is arguably one of the most beautiful provinces in the country and a lot of the more nature-focused or quintessentially Atlantic Canadian culture is found outside of the city limits.
The following destinations are easily accessible by car and some can even be reached by bus if you’re feeling adventurous. Here, five must-visit day trips from Halifax that’ll give you a greater understanding of everything Nova Scotia has to offer.
Peggy’s Cove
Peggy's Cove Lighthouse under blue summer sky. Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada. Day and Night Series.
The first thing most travelers think of when conjuring up images of Nova Scotia is Peggy’s Cove . The infamous lighthouse and quaint fishing village is a must-visit when visiting Halifax but most visitors don’t realize the attraction is actually about an hour outside of the downtown core. It’s an easy half-day trip but you’ll want to consider sticking around the area and indulging in local fare at a seafood shack like Tom's Lobster Shack.
The beautiful and historic town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in the fall. Boats drift in the harbour and the amazing colours of the buildings in this picturesque seaside town add to the scene. This image was taken across the harbour from town on a gorgeous fall morning. Lunenburg is located approximately an hour from Halifax.
Lunenburg is another one of those quintessentially Nova Scotian spots to visit when visiting. It’s about an hour outside of the city (and is accessible with hired bus if you’re not interested in renting a car). The port town dates back to 1753 and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. In fact, UNESCO considers it the best example of a British colonial settlement in North America. It’s also the home of the Bluenose—the most famous sailboat in Canadian history.
Wonderful vinyards, field of lush green grapevines, Nova Scotia, Canada
Wolfville in the Annapolis Valley has always been a popular option for daytrippers coming from Halifax—but these days it has become even more culturally significant thanks to the rise in Nova Scotian wine. It’s only about 90 minutes from Halifax and is home to almost all of the most popular and legacy vineyards in the province (be sure to have a glass of Tidal Bay wine while you’re there!).
Bay of Fundy
Image of the flowerpot at Burntcoat Head an hour after high tide. The water level changes at a speed of around 2 inches per minute. The highest tides of the world are recorded here, at Burntcoat Head with an average of 55.8 feet. The highest tide was during the tropical cyclone Saxby Gale in 1969 at 70.9 feet.
Did you know that Nova Scotia has the highest reported tides in the world? It’s true—and you can experience it on an afternoon trip to Burntcoat Head Park in the Bay of Fundy. Check the tide schedule before heading out to walk the ocean floor—and be sure to stick around the park when the tide comes in so you can witness the unbelievable difference in water levels within a few short hours’ time.
Martinique Beach
Martinique Beach, Canada: Two surfers stroll down the long curving crescent of Martinique Beach on a hot July afternoon.
Martinique Beach is the longest sandy beach in Nova Scotia at an uninterrupted five kilometres of coastline. It’s about an hour from the downtown core and is well-worth visiting any time of year. In summer and early fall, you can watch the abundance of surfers and surf students catching waves. The winter months are quite a bit more chilly but can be a very peaceful spot to beach comb and enjoy the soothing waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
