Beaufort is filled with history, and part of that subject centers around the well-preserved architecture of the area. The view from the water always changes a visitor's perspective of a destination. Seeing the 300-year-old Beaufort, one of the largest natural harbors on the East Coast, by kayak is no exception. Several companies provide tours and the opportunity to explore by water.

The Beaufort History Museum was originally established in 1939. It has grown to focus specifically on the deep and rich history of the Beaufort District, which is geographically bordered by the Combahee River on the north and to Hilton Head on the south. The area reaches approximately 50 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean.

On display, visitors will find historical documents, artifacts, and ephemera detailing the rich history of Beaufort. A timeline highlights the arrival of Native Americans, the area's first settlers through the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, the antebellum era, and reconstruction up to the present day.

The Lowcountry of the Carolinas are known for many things, from their delicious seafood to their hospitality and Southern charm. One of the most iconic symbols is Spanish Moss, and one of the best places to see it in all its glory is the Spanish Moss Trail.

This light grey hanging plant is actually a bromeliad, not a moss, and is not parasitic. The moss takes its nutrients not from the tree, but from rain, fog, sunlight, and airborne dust and debris.

The paved Spanish Moss Trail is one you can walk or bike. It follows the path of the former Port Royal Railroad and gives you a view of the water, marsh, and, of course, the Spanish Moss. If you are lucky, you can catch a peek of a fighter jet from the nearby Marine Corp Air Station taking off.

Another means to seeing Beaufort from the water, without the heavy lifting of a kayak or paddleboard, is touring by motorboat. Things to do on the Beaufort River and into the Port Royal Sound include watching for playful bottlenose dolphins in Taylor's Creek.

If you're lucky, you can catch the unique experience of strand feeding, where the intelligent dolphin pod herds a prey (often mullet) onto a sandbar by synchronizing their body movements. The victims are then stranded for the dolphins to easily make a meal.

Certainly unexpected would be a trip to Morgan Island to visit the primate colony living in the wild. Though trespassing on the island is not allowed, more than 3,000 monkeys are in the habitat and can be viewed from your vessel.

Another option would be a sighting of the horses and natural beauty of Carrot Island . Perhaps a romantic sunset cruise is more your preferred itinerary. There are many options involving flora and fauna in this Lowcountry section of South Carolina.

On the stretch of highway between Bluffton and Beaufort is The Port Royal Sound Foundation Maritime Center. Where else could you check out a prehistoric megalodon jaw? As you wander around the center, you get an understanding of the delicate ecosystem of the Port Royal sound and how it has influenced this area.

An especially beautiful area of this region, just made for outdoor activities, is the Cypress Wetlands. Many types of birds make their home here, including herons, owls, falcons, hawks, and additional migratory birds.

Bird-watchers especially will enjoy the white egrets stalking their prey throughout the grasses. The environment is full of Spanish moss, cypress trees, ponds, and other elements visitors will get to know in the Lowcountry.

The thriving ecosystem features a half-mile trail with viewing spots along the way that circles the sanctuary. Alligators and snakes also make their homes here, so while dogs are allowed, make sure to keep them on leash and stay on the path yourself.

With a perfect climate for year-round golf, Beaufort offers a range of clubs for the public to enjoy. The Lowcountry provides the additional benefit of gorgeous scenery (some waterfront) and wildlife on view while trying to make par. The sport in this area is considered a way of life.

Parris Island is home to The Legends Golf Course , and holes move through wetlands and deep-water creeks. The challenging par 72 is enhanced by the rich history of the island.

Originally built in the 1700s, the Old Sheldon Church stands in ruins with little left but the stone foundation, walls, and portico. Even in its current state, it's still wildly popular. Centuries-old gravestones and live oaks surround the site of the old church.

The church, built in Greek Revival style, is about 17 miles north of Beaufort and is a popular spot for history buffs, nature lovers, photographers, and bridal parties wanting to capture the tattered and serene beauty. The church has survived many attempts over the years to destroy it through area battles but still stands today as a skeleton for visitors to enjoy.

Visitors to coastal South Carolina, and Beaufort in particular, have a unique opportunity to learn about one of the amazing cultures of the American south - the Gullah culture. The Gullah are of African descent and live in the Lowcountry of both South Carolina and Georgia, including the islands near Beaufort.

Helena Island, in particular, has one of the largest Gullah populations in the region. The ancestors of these descendants were brought to the southern coast as slaves. Today, their descendants are known for their preservation of African language and cultural heritage - more so than any other African American community in the country.

Located on St. Helena Island, The Penn Center is the First School in the South for Formerly Enslaved West Africans. Three years before slavery was abolished, African American community leaders were already pushing to help live more full lives. The Penn Center as a result of these efforts and today stands to preserve the culture of its early founders. 

The Gullah Geechee people native to the area established this as the first academic school for freed slaves. Slaves had been forced against learning to read or write for decades, and the Penn Center sought to level the playing field.

 Discover the Fresh Produce of Beaufort

Beaufort has taken advantage of their watery surroundings by creating a thriving agricultural economy. Local Produce stands now pack the area as a testament to the hard work of the area’s early inhabitants. The people here have always thrived on freshness, so there’s no better way to get a taste of the area. 

If you don’t bump into any produce stands on your journey across Route 21, you’ll be sure to find the freshest of the fresh at the Port Royal Farmers Market , an outdoor market that runs rain or shine year-round.

Watch the Sunset from the St. Phillips Island Ferry

St. Phillips Ferry is an ecotour from Hunting State Park along the Story River. The island is uninhabited, besides the park ranger ready to take you on a tram ride through the marshland to the beach. Trails have been carved through the maritime forest and endangered species have been introduced to the area and allowed to thrive. 

Head onshore to get a glimpse of Loggerhead Sea Turtles and Fox squirrels, as well as a variety of legendary local tree species. The island is a recent addition to the State Park area, and spending a day on its nature-filled shores is capped off perfectly with a sunset cruise back to the mainland.

Relive Movie Magic

This amount of architectural preservation has been noticed by the entire world. Over 16 Hollywood films have set up shop somewhere in town, most notably in Forrest Gump. Tom Hanks crosses the Woods Memorial Bridge in the film while running across the US. This is now one of Beaufort’s most famous landmarks!

The Beaufort Visitors’ Center has a map of all filming locations, and several tour guides will take you for an inside look of the areas, with never before heard stories of the making of the more famous works.

Soak up a Drive-in Film

Drive-in theaters may not be the most prevalent movie experience anymore, but Beaufort has kept an authentic movie-going opportunity alive at the Highway 21 drive in . The concession stand hasn’t even changed its menu since the original rendition. 

Don’t let the old school preservation fool you, this theater has two big screens and shows four movies every night. You’ll find a constant blend of classic favorites and some of the most exciting new films heading to a theater near you.

Test your luck at Old Sheldon Church

Old Sheldon Church has burnt down not once, but twice in its history since it was first built in 1745. The church didn’t even make it 50 years before being burned down in the revolutionary war. It was rebuilt in 1826, and was once again burned down during the Civil War. 

The church never regained its full glory after the second incident, but the ruins are still a popular destination for history lovers and ghost hunters. There is still one service at the ruins of this church after easter each year.

Meet a friend at the Port Royal Beer Garden

Dreaming of a beachside vacation with plenty of southern charm? Beaufort, South Carolina might just be your perfect match. This coastal town has a wide selection of beaches, parks, trails, historic homes, and fun restaurants. Here are the best things to do in Beaufort. 

Not to be confused with Beaufort, North Carolina (pronounced BOH-fert), you'll find this Beaufort (pronounced BEW-fert) in South Carolina. It's nestled right into the heart of the Sea Islands and South Carolina Lowcountry between Charleston, SC and Savannah, Georgia. Beaufort occupies most of Port Royal Island, as well as parts of Lady's Island.

Beaufort is the second oldest city in South Carolina and among the oldest in the United States. And while it was officially chartered in 1711, its history dates back to the early 1520s when the Spaniards and French were exploring the surrounding region.

Calling it a historic town is a bit of an understatement. Today, 304 acres of this charming coastal town have been designated as a National Historic Landmark.

And with its spectacular historic architecture, beautiful coastal views and nearby beaches, it's not surprising that Beaufort has been featured in plenty of popular movies and magazines. The Big Chill.   Forrest Gump. Something To Talk About. The Prince of Tides. They were all filmed here.

There's a reason why Southern Living named it "Best Small Southern Town" and National Geographic Adventure named it "Top 50 Adventure Town"!

Not-to-Miss Things To Do in Beaufort, SC

Of course, the Beaufort area is a popular beach destination for its scenic views and southern charm. With a variety of beaches, parks, trails, historic homes, and fun restaurants to choose from, here are the destinations and attractions that you'll want to consider as you plan your coastal getaway.

Enjoy A Day In The Sun At Beaufort Beaches

With a few different beaches near Beaufort to choose from, you have your pick in the type of beach experience you're after. Here are the details you need to keep in mind about Beaufort's public beaches when you're planning your beach getaway itinerary. 

1. Hunting Island Beach

Hunting Island Beach is by far the most well-known and popular beach in Beaufort, South Carolina. Located inside the Hunting Island State Park, this beach boasts five miles of sandy, oasis-like shoreline. Due to its popularity with tourists and locals alike, this is the busiest beach in the area – the park sees about a million visitors through its gates every year!

If you're looking to take a dip in the water, Hunting Island Beach is the place to be. It's known for the best swimming in the area.

Of course, you're also likely to see local wildlife during your visit. Much like Hilton Head Island , loggerhead turtles frequent this area during the summer months for nesting season.

You'll also see a variety of shorebirds and seabirds during your beach time – it's a popular spot for them to feed, nest and rest during migration. 

Hunting Island Beach keeps the same hours as the park. It's open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM, with extended closing at 9 PM during daylight savings time. Your park admission fee covers access to the beach.

That said, if you're traveling with a group and planning on visiting more than a couple of times during your stay in Beaufort, you may want to consider an annual park pass instead.

2. The Sands Beach

Looking for a beach that's close to downtown Beaufort? Look no further than The Sands . You'll find this free public beach (and its stellar river and estuary views) where Battery Creek meets the Beaufort River in Port Royal. 

The Sands is a particularly great spot for soaking up the sun, taking a casual stroll along the shore, and hunting for shark's teeth. Just be sure to wear your shoes – there are sharp oyster shell clusters scattered along this beach.

Visiting for the view? Make sure to check out the four-story tall observation tower on the Henry Robinson Boardwalk. It's the best way to see the surrounding sights. The boardwalk is also a great spot for fishing.

Similar to Daytona Beach , The Sands is one of only a handful of U.S. beaches where you can drive your car out and park on the beach. Of course, be sure to check the tide schedule if you do. You wouldn't want to get stranded out there during high tide!

3. Land's End Beach

This is the beach to visit if you're looking for a quiet day away from the crowds. Land's End Beach is a favorite among the locals and it's notoriously difficult to find! This public beach is located down Martin Luther King Jr. boulevard on St. Helena Island, where the Port Royal Sound meets the Beaufort River.

Calling it a secluded beach might be a bit of an understatement. Access to the beach is a little tricky and there's only enough room for a small handful of cars to park along the road. There's no parking lot around here (unless you're traversing the rock embankment from the grounds of Fort Fremont).

Even so, this hidden gem might just be the perfect place to visit if you're craving a little quiet time at the beach.

Outdoor Fun Enjoying Beaufort's Parks & Trails 

This coastal town offers plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy nature. No matter which part of town you're spending your day visiting, there's a variety of ways to take in Beaufort's spectacular views.

4. Hunting Island State Park

Hands down, this is South Carolina's most popular state park . And it's not just well-liked by tourists –plenty of land and marine wildlife love it too! Hunting Island State Park covers a span of about 5000 acres of South Carolina Lowcountry. 

Besides the beautiful Hunting Island Beach, you'll find plenty of marshes and maritime forest acreage, as well as a saltwater lagoon and ocean inlet. As I'm sure you can imagine, this is a great place to visit if you're looking for some outdoor activities during your stay in Beaufort.

I took the photo above from a boardwalk over the marsh at the end of one of the trails. It was an easy walk from the parking lot and well worth it since it puts you right over the water in the middle of the marsh!

This park's trails are relatively short (the longest is 2.3 miles) and mostly ranked as easy, but they provide a fantastic way to enjoy the natural surroundings and wildlife. Particularly the live oaks and Spanish moss found in the maritime forest!

Further inland you should be able to find a variety of local wildlife, ranging from raccoons to alligators. And the marshes in this park are a great place to visit if you enjoy bird-watching – everything from painted buntings to herons frequent Hunting Island.

Just like the Hunting Island Beach, Hunting Island State Park is open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM, with extended closing at 9 PM during the summer months. There is a small fee for park admission and it covers access to the entire park, including the beach. 

If you're traveling with a dog, you can bring your furry friend to this pet-friendly park as well. You'll just want to pay attention to signage, as there are a handful of restrictions when it comes to pet access.

5. Hunting Island Lighthouse

While not technically an outdoor space, this is an excellent spot to view your coastal surroundings. And lighthouse lovers take note: Hunting Island Lighthouse is one of the few lighthouses in South Carolina that's open to the public (they say it's the only one, but the Harbour Town Lighthouse in Hilton Head's Sea Pines is also open to the public).

Hunting Island visitors can climb the 167 steps up to the top, where they'll stand 130 feet above the ground. Perfect for enjoying the sights of the South Carolina coast and nearby maritime forest.

Originally built in 1859, this lighthouse was destroyed during the Civil War and completely rebuilt in 1875. A neat little architectural detail of this lighthouse: it was constructed of interchangeable cast iron pieces, designed to be taken apart if the lighthouse ever needed to be relocated. Of course, this came in handy when beach erosion required it to be moved over a mile inland a few years later!

You'll find the Hunting Island Lighthouse open for climbing most days of the year, with the exception of Christmas Day and sometimes for bad weather. It does require a very small admission fee to climb to the top (in addition to your Hunting Island State Park admission), but the view is well worth the price. Make sure to double-check your times as you plan your visit – visiting hours vary slightly for peak and off-season.

6. Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park

This is the park to visit if you're planning a day in downtown Beaufort. Open for over 40 years, this park was named after the local Beaufort mayor that spent a good amount of his career pushing for the construction of this public green space. Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park now serves as both a local marina and free local spot to enjoy Beaufort waterfront views in the downtown core.

Today, tourists and locals alike can enjoy the 7 acres of picturesque, dog-friendly park in a number of ways. The walking paths offer a great opportunity to take in the live oaks and palmettos, younger visitors enjoy the waterfront playground, and there's plenty of room to enjoy a laid back picnic in the park.

Amenities include plenty of benches to lounge on while taking in views of the harbor, safe drinking water, and restrooms. You can also rent kayaks for a Beaufort kayak tour at the marina. Park access is completely free (there are pay stations for parking).

7. Spanish Moss Trail

You'll find this awesome trail located a little way outside the city of Beaufort, in northern Beaufort County. With over 10 miles of paved 12-feet wide paths and six parking trailheads to choose from, this is a fun and accessible way to experience the Lowcountry wilderness.

Open to pedestrians and non-motorized transportation, this would be a great place to stop if you're traveling with your bike, if you're an avid runner, or to take your canine friend on a leashed walk. And as far as trailside amenities go, you'll find a couple of restrooms on-site.

If you're looking for beautiful marsh and coastal views – not to mention the local wildlife – then you'll certainly find it on this trail. You can visit the Spanish Moss Trail daily between dawn and dusk for free.

The Top Beaufort Restaurants You Need To Try

A vacation isn't really  a vacation until you've enjoyed a local cocktail and snack. Here's a sampling of Beaufort restaurants to try. Here are the best places to stop while you're in town – especially if you love seafood!

8. Plums Restaurant

You'll find Plums Restaurant just a short walk from the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park on Bay Street in historic downtown Beaufort. Stop in to sample local seasonal goods from nearby farms and seafood suppliers, all served with creative Lowcountry flare.

Seafood lovers will be happy to see dishes like fresh on-the-half-shell oysters, fried oysters, and the fresh shrimp and oyster tower. Likewise, you'll spot Southern classics like a traditional Lowcountry boil, shrimp & grits, pan-seared crab cakes , and gumbo. And if seafood and Southern cuisine isn't to your tastes, Plums also has a healthy selection of burgers and salads.

No need to go the extra mile in planning your visit to Plums either. They're open every day of the week from 11 AM to 9 PM. Be sure to ask for a table outside and you'll enjoy a view of Waterfront Park with your relaxing lunch or dinner!

9. Breakwater Restaurant & Bar

Here's another Beaufort restaurant that features a menu guided by local seasonal ingredients. Breakwater Restaurant & Bar has made it their mission to source locally whenever possible. You'll find this gem located in the center of Beaufort's National Historic District. Expect a chic, modern take on even the most traditional Lowcountry dishes on the menu.

You'll find beautiful seafood plates like tuna crudo and spicy calamari. If you're stopping by for a little snack try the petite steak or diver scallops. And if you're sticking around for a full meal, you'll have a selection of signature entrees like filet mignon, Scottish salmon or blackened Mahi. Most importantly, make sure to save room for dessert – they serve house-made bourbon ice cream!

The Breakwater kitchen is open Monday through Saturday from 11 AM to 9:30 PM and the bar is open even later. If you're visiting Beaufort on the weekend, make sure to take note that Breakwater is closed on Sundays – plan your visit accordingly! 

10. Common Ground

If you're looking for a pick me up, check out Common Ground coffee shop. They serve great coffee, breakfast and sandwiches from their beautifully remodeled building overlooking the waterfront.

Don't forget to try a freshly baked pastry or a Turtle latte from the coffee bar. Lunch options include flat grilled sandwiches, salads. They also have smoothies and gelato!

11. Blackstone's Cafe

If you're exploring downtown, you'll find Blackstone's Cafe tucked away on a little side street. They serve breakfast and lunch all day, so it's the perfect place to stop in between shopping and wandering through the historic district.

12. Wren Bistro & Bar

Whether you're stopping by for lunch or dinner, Wren Bistro & Bar offers a laidback vibe right in the heart of the historic downtown core. Plenty of locally grown and sourced ingredients, as well as a great selection of microbrews and wines, make this a great place to stop no matter whether you're in the mood for a meal or to simply enjoy a drink. 

If you visit at lunchtime, you'll have a choice of dishes like shellfish bisque, toasted pecan and cranberry chicken salad, Lowcountry cobb salad, crispy fish sandwich, or their Southern Tier 11 fried green tomato dish. Visiting a little later? Expect to see a variety of sharing plates like the wild mushroom flatbread, as well as mains like crispy flounder, Carolina shrimp n' grits, and Mahi & shrimp served with a crispy grit cake.

Wren is open Tuesday through Saturday and closed on Sunday and Monday. Lunch runs from 11 AM to 3 PM, the "In Between" from 3 PM to 5 PM, and dining hours are from 5 PM to 10 PM. If you have your heart set on a particular menu, make sure to time your arrival properly.

Tour Around The Beautiful Beaufort Historic District

In a town as old as Beaufort, it's not surprising that there are plenty of historical attractions to take in, many are in the National Register of Historic Places. In fact, the entire downtown area has been designated a historic district by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

It might be hard to pry yourself away from the beach, but these sights in the historic district of Beaufort are a must-see. If you're a history buff be sure to plan a walking tour or carriage ride to see the historic sites!

13. Beaufort History Museum

The best place to get an overview of Beaufort's rich 450-year history is the Beaufort History Museum. It covers the founding of the city and surrounding area through its role in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and Reconstruction.

This is also a good first stop as guests can pick up maps and information on other attractions at the attached visitor center.

14. St. Helena's Anglican Church

You'll find St. Helena's Anglican Church located in the historic district of Beaufort, just a short walk from the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park.

This colonial parish was originally established as an extension of the Church of England. Their congregation dates back to 1712 and the first church was built in 1724, making it one of the oldest churches in America.

As you might expect, this church has a colorful history of uses, including time spent operating as a Union troop hospital during the Civil War. Its current facade dates back to 1824. 

Churches don't always make the top of the list for must-see vacation attractions, but this church is worth a stop for history junkies and architecture buffs.

15. John Mark Verdier House

If you've been following our travel guides for a while, you'll know that I love a historic house museum . And this downtown Beaufort attraction is no exception. The Federal style mansion was built in 1804 and was occupied by Union soldiers during the Civil War.

John Mark Verdier House offers three primary museum exhibits. The first of which focuses on a Beaufort resident by the name of Robert Smalls , an escaped slave and Civil war hero who was the first African American to serve in the U.S. Congress in 1875.

The second exhibit showcases a collection of Civil War-era photos. And the third exhibit covers the Beaufort Volunteer Artillery, which fought in both the American Revolution and the Civil War.

16. Beaufort National Cemetery

For more war history, you can visit the Beaufort National Cemetery on Boundary Street. The cemetery is run by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and includes Union and Confederate interments from the Civil War and veterans from every major American conflict since then.

The cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and includes a monument to unknown Union Soldiers that was erected in the 1870s.

17. Old Sheldon Church

Although it's a short drive outside of Beaufort, the Old Sheldon Church is a scenic stop for photography and history buffs. Originally built in the 1700s, the church ruins are set among live oaks dripping with Spanish moss.

Bricks on Boundary

Bricks on Boundary is one of our favourite bars and one of the best things to do in Beaufort SC for adults. Located in the heart of Beaufort SC, Bricks on Boundary is renowned for cracking food, decadent desserts and a drinks menu to rival any bar in New York City.

We love their beer battered flounder! Choose three or six pieces of Guinness battered Carolina flounder fillets served with tartare sauce, cocktail sauce, and your choice of side. They also do an amazing spicy flounder sandwich. You could say we are pretty keen on flounder. So local and fresh! If you’re more in the mood for dessert, Aunt Edith’s Home Made Southern Pecan Pie, served with a scoop of ice cream, will not disappoint!

Join a walking tour or hop on a horse-drawn carriage in the sunshine. If you’re looking for souvenirs, Bay Street will serve you well, with hand made sand globes, oyster shell trinkets and sweetgrass baskets.

Bay Street is also home to some of the greatest bars in Beaufort SC. We highly recommend checking out Plum’s, Hearth and Saltus, and Hemingway’s. They also offer a fun factory tour where you can see how kazoos are made, and, best of all, you can even make your own kazoo! The build your own kazoo station is a family friendly activity with a huge range of colours to choose from! The kids will love it but so will you!

Committed to seasonal menus and sourcing ingredients from local providers, Plums markets itself on being a local favourite since 1986 and they are not kidding – it even made our l ist of the best restaurants in Beaufort SC you must try!

With a riverfront kitchen and oyster bar, Plums is a great place to eat at any time of the day or night. It’s one of our favourite things to do in Beaufort South Carolina. Plums is owned by Lantz Price, who also owns the outstanding Saltus River Grill in downtown Beaufort SC.

As for the food, we love their Shrimp Salad BLT – shrimp salad on toasted, buttered brioche bread with applewood smoked bacon, lettuce and tomato. Incredible! Their smoked gouda mac n cheese (topped with bacon, of course!) is also high recommended, as is their lowcountry gumbo – a house specialty with chicken, andouille sausage, tasso, peppers, okra and tomatoes.

Plums is truly a treat, we stop in every time we’re in Beaufort SC. It is truly one of the best places to visit in Beaufort SC.

Hunting Island State Park

Hunting Island State Park is the most popular state park in South Carolina and one of our favourite things to do near Beaufort SC!

Hunting Island State Parks attracts more than one million visitors every year, and has something to offer everyone. It features five miles of beaches, and thousands of acres of forest and marshes. There’s even a saltwater lagoon!

One of our favourite things about Hunting Island State Parks is that it has its very own lighthouse! So cool! Climb the 167 steps to the top and check out the stunning views of the park. It’s the only publicly accessible lighthouse in South Carolina, so definitely worth a look.

With camping options including 100 spots that have electricity, you can extend your stay (noting a two night camping minimum is required). There’s also a cabin near the lighthouse, if that’s your jam! For more information on great cozy cabins in South Carolina, check out our great list !

Definitely add Hunting Island State Park to your vacation bucket list, it is one of the best things to do near Beaufort SC and you will love it!

Reconstruction Era National Historical Park

The Reconstruction Era National Historical Park is one of the most interesting places in Beaufort South Carolina.

Comprising four sites that are scattered throughout Beaufort Country, the Reconstruction Era National Historical Park is a site of massive significance. Pay your respects at the Darrah Hall and brick Baptist Church within the Penn School National Historic Landmark District on St Helena Island.

This is the site of one of the country’s first schools for freed enslaved people, as well as a church built by enslaved people in 1855 and then handed over to freed enslaved people in 1862

There’s also the Old Beaufort Firehouse which serves as the Park’s visitor’s centre, and the Camp Saxton Site, the place where ceremonies were held on New Year’s Day 1863 to announce, and commemorate, the Emancipation Proclamation. As the Camp Saxton Site is on US Navy property, it may not be public accessible, so definitely check before you go.

It’s a sobering thing to absorb, but you won’t regret checking out the Reconstruction Era National Historical Park, if you’re looking for what to do in Beaufort, don’t miss this.

Saltus River Grill

Saltus River Grill is one of the top things to do in Beaufort South Carolina. Sit on the beautiful outside deck under the delightful shady trees, or in the lovely dining room, and enjoy some of the best food in Beaufort SC.

We love the Sea Island Shrimp and Stone Ground Grits, served with roasted mushrooms, scallions, smoked bacon, confit garlic and jus. Yum! Or there’s the BBQ Pork Belly, with cabbage and red bell pepper slaw, house sauce, and roasted peach chutney.

We pair anything here with their applewood smoked bacon and cheddar mash, it is literally to die for. They also have a great wine list with some of the best offerings in the area.

For an indulgent night out we highly recommend a visit to Saltus River Grill. The views are spectacular, the food is incredible, it is one of the best things to do in Beaufort SC for adults. Let them know we sent you!

Harbor Island

Just 14 miles from Beaufort South Carolina is Harbor Island, a 1400 acre barrier island and one of the best things to do near Beaufort SC.

With a range of accommodation options to suit families, friends and couples, this delightful gated community makes for a wonderful vacation. With three outdoor pools, tennis courts, a golf course, and – oh wait for it – three miles of white sandy beach to explore, Harbor Island is next level.

The gorgeous beach features wildlife including pelicans, terns, egrets, herons and horseshoe crabs. Watch dolphins frolicking in the sea or explore the nearby marshes. Jump in a fishing boat or hire a kayak or paddleboarding to continue exploring from the water.

Beaufort National Cemetery

Beaufort National Cemetery is one of six cemeteries across the United States established in 1863 to honour and reinter Union soldiers and sailors who had died in the region during the Civil War. More than 14,000 soldiers are laid to rest here.

It’s a sobering place to visit, but super peaceful, and one of our favourite free things to do in Beaufort SC. The cemetery’s design is unique, even among other national cemeteries, because of its hub and spoke layout. It was commissioned by Abraham Lincoln!

If you’re looking for things to do in Beaufort SC at night, let’s be honest, this is probably not it. But at any other time of the day, we highly recommend a visit to the Beaufort National Cemetery. It’s open from 8am to sunset every day except for select public holidays, so do check before you visit to make sure it’s open.

Spanish Moss Trail

The Spanish Moss Trail is one of the most fun things to do near Beaufort South Carolina, you’ll want to add it to your bucket list for sure!

This delightful trail is a partially-completed multi-purpose ten-mile trail in the north of Beaufort County. Connecting the city of Beaufort and the town of Port Royal, the 12 foot wide trail is open for anyone who wants to walk, run, buke, scoot or skate. It’s for everyone!

The trail offers spectacular scenery with water and marsh views, intriguing flora and fauna, oh and of course – the Spanish moss covered neighbourhoods you’ll meander through on the way.  When it’s completed, the full trail will be 16 miles long.

Trail funding is made through donations and public funding, so if you have a chance to and you can spare it, please lob a few dollars their way! Whether or not you’re a keen nature lover, you’ll enjoy the Spanish Moss Trail, it’s one the absolute highlights of Beaufort SC.

Fat Patties

Fat Patties is an absolute must for your Beaufort South Carolina food bucket list. It’s seriously one of the best things to do in Beaufort SC.

Offering burgers, bratwurst, ice cream and local craft beer, Fat Patties pride themselves on ‘creative burger concoctions’ in your choice of six different patties (beef, half beef half bacon, shrimp, turkey, chicken, or black bean.

If you’re more of a sausage person, you’ll be intrigued to know that their bratwursts are simmered slowly in ale to create a mouth-watering sensation leaving you wanting more.

Their delicious homemade buns are light and fluffy, and their fillings are decadent and moreish. Our favourites are the Beef and Bacon Virginia V, with a half and half pattie, pimento cheese, slaw, fried green tomato, and garlic mayonnaise. Served with rosemary fries!

They also make their own ice cream in delightful flavours like burnt marshmallow and bourbon pecan pie.

Parris Island Museum

The Parris Island Museum is one of the best attractions in Beaufort South Carolina. Celebrating United States military history, you can learn what it takes to become a Marine. It’s also free! Making it one of our favourite free things to do in Beaufort SC!

But beyond that, the timeline features exhibit that cover fascinated swathes of local history. You can learn about the local first nations people, to the European colonisers and explorers. They will tell you there’s something here for everyone!

Of course, no museum would be complete without a cracking gift shop to support and buy a souvenir from!

The museum is closed on Sundays and select public holidays, so definitely double check before you go. If you enjoy military history, or you’re looking to learn more about the past, definitely add the Parris Island Museum to your list, it’s one of the top things to do in Beaufort SC.

Millions of people visit Beaufort each year and one of the biggest reasons is our history. Beaufort was first settled some 500 years ago and that’s a long time for a magical story to unfold. From old forts to church buildings, tabby homes and sacred ruins, Beaufort’s history is virtually about as old as America’s itself. Make sure your explore these 15 must-see local historic Beaufort spots on your next trip to town.

Old Sheldon Church

One of the most sacred spots in the entire Lowcountry is the ruins of the Old Sheldon Church. The church was built between 1745 and 1753 and is said to be the first attempt to imitate a Greek temple in America. The church was burned by the British in 1779 during the Revolutionary War and was rebuilt in 1826. Legend says it was later burnt by William Tecumseh Sherman in 1865. Beaufort Arsenal

The Beaufort Arsenal is one of the most significant historic buildings in all of Beaufort with over 200 years of service. Completed in 1798, the original structure was the home of the Beaufort Volunteer Artillery, commissioned in 1802, which had its roots in an earlier company organized in 1776 during the Revolutionary War. Historic Fort Fremont

Located on St. Helena Island in an area known as Land’s End, Fort Fremont is a Spanish American War fort built in 1899 as one of the coastal batteries authorized by Congress. Luckily the war was a short one and the Spanish never made it to Beaufort and no shot was ever fired from the fort. Penn Center

Beaufort National Cemetery

Beaufort National Cemetery is one of six national cemeteries that were established in 1863 for the reinterment of Union soldiers and sailors who died in the region. The cemetery’s plan is unique among other national cemeteries of the Civil War-era because of its landscape, which was laid out in the shape of a half wheel with roads forming spokes from the “hub” at the entrance. Today, more than 22,000 lie at rest in the cemetery; veterans from every single major U.S. conflict in history including the Civil War. Address: 1601 Boundary Street, Beaufort SC Get Directions

Hunting Island Lighthouse

One of the most recognizable and most beloved landmarks in the Beaufort area is the historic Hunting Island Lighthouse. Currently under renovations, it’s the only lighthouse in South Carolina where you can climb all the way to the top. Its construction started 1859, but was set back as the tower was destroyed during the Civil War in 1862 by Confederate forces so the Union Navy would not be able to use it for navigation. Robert Smalls House

Robert Smalls was born into slavery in 1839, and spent most of his early years in this house at 511 Prince Street in downtown Beaufort. After he returned home from service, he was elected to 5 terms as Congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives and purchased his former owner’s house, and took care of Mrs. McKee until the day she passed away. Smalls died right there in the house on February 22, 1915. The Robert Smalls House is located in central Beaufort, at the northeast corner of Prince and New Streets. Reconstruction Era National Monument

Tabernacle Baptist Church

Tabernacle Baptist Church at 907 Craven Street is historic in several ways. It was formed by African-American members of Beaufort Baptist Church after Federal Occupation of the town in 1861. It was a stop along the way for Harriet Tubman in the Underground Railroad and is the final resting place of Beaufort’s Robert Smalls. 12 Best Things to Do in Beaufort, SC

The second-oldest city in South Carolina, Beaufort is renowned for its scenic setting and charming Historic District. Full of amazing antebellum architecture, majestic magnolias and live oaks clad in Spanish moss, its peaceful streets are a delight to stroll around with interesting historic tourist attractions and centuries-old churches.

Located on Port Royal Island, the colonial city lies alongside the Beaufort River with marshes, islands, and the ocean nearby. As such, many of the best things to do in Beaufort include outstanding outdoor activities with phenomenal views and local wildlife viewing.

Although often overlooked in favor of Savannah and Charleston , Beaufort has a rich history and heritage and is often used as a filming location due to its picture-perfect streets and stunning setting.

12. John Mark Verdier House

One of the most beautiful buildings in Beaufort, the grand John Mark Verdier House lies right in the center, a stone’s throw from its other main attractions. Located just a block inland from the lovely Waterfront Park, it exhibits antebellum architecture and tours are available around its delightfully decorated interior.

A historic house museum, it was built in 1804 and is named after its former owner, John Mark Verdier, a second-generation French Huguenot. The elegant estate and its pretty two-story portico are a visible statement of his success as both a planter and merchant.

Nowadays its fine furnishings, period pieces, and excellent exhibits offer a fascinating insight into how the wealthy lived before the Civil War. The massive mansion also being recognized as a National Historic Landmark.

11. Beaufort History Museum

Just a short stroll away is the Beaufort History Museum. Full of amazing old artifacts and exhibits, it impressively covers over four centuries of the city’s history in a very engaging and informative way.

Lying within the Historic District, the museum occupies the city’s old Arsenal, which itself dates to 1798. Its extensive collection looks at Native American peoples, European explorers, plantation culture, the antebellum decades, and the American Civil War.

10. St. Helena’s Anglican Church

One of the oldest churches in not just the city, St. Helena’s is just to the north of the charming Beaufort Historic District. Still in use to this day, the church was established in 1712 with its soaring steeple towering above gorgeous grounds.

Although the original church dates to over a century earlier, the current building with its fetching facade and blindingly bright white exterior was erected in 1842. Used as a hospital by Union troops during the Civil War, its light-filled interior has graceful balconies and columns look down over its pulpits and pews.

It is also well worth strolling around its atmospheric old graveyard that contains historic markers, Palmetto trees, and live oaks.

9. Old Sheldon Church

The crumbling ruins of the Old Sheldon Church lie half an hour’s drive north of Beaufort. Set in a scenic spot, its remaining brick walls, foundations, and portico make for a stunning sight with leafy trees rising dramatically all around them.

Built between 1745 and 1753, it was burnt down just decades later by the British during the Revolutionary War. Despite being rebuilt, it was again set ablaze by General Sherman in 1865 with only the shell of the massive Greek Revival-style structure still standing today.

Due to its scenic splendor and striking silhouette, Old Sheldon Church attracts locals and tourists alike, come to take photos or even hold romantic wedding ceremonies amidst the remarkable ruins.

8. Beaufort National Cemetery

One of the most moving and majestic cemeteries in the States, the Beaufort National Cemetery is a short walk or drive to the northwest of the center. Its lush green grounds are now the final resting place of over 19,000 service men and women.

Founded in 1863, the cemetery mainly contains the weathered graves of both Confederate and Union soldiers who fought and died during the Civil War. Over the decades, fallen comrades from every major American conflict have been buried here, including soldiers from the Korean, Vietnam, and Gulf wars.

Among them you can also find the graves of numerous generals, colonels and Medal of Honour recipients with lovely live oaks coated in Spanish moss dotted here and there.

7. Beaufort Kayak Tour

Beaufort is almost entirely surrounded by water, so a wonderful way to see as much of the city and its scenic surroundings as possible is to take an unforgettable kayak tour. From the center of town, numerous companies run excursions out to the nearby wetlands, sandbars and creeks, while others take you past the handsome homes of the Historic District.

Whichever option you choose, you are guaranteed a great time with stunning scenery, nature, and views. As you paddle peacefully about its endless waterways, your knowledgeable guide will teach you all about the local ecology and animals or about the history of the magnificent mansions you pass and the city itself.

In addition, some of the kayak tours take you out to see local wildlife with ospreys and herons to be spied alongside playful bottlenose dolphins.

6. Fort Fremont

The historic Fort Fremont lies at the entrance to the Beaufort River, just twenty minutes drive south of the city. Set on Saint Helena Island, the massive military installation was built in 1899 to protect both the city and strategic Port Royal Sound from attack.

One of only two surviving coastal fortifications in the country from the Spanish-American War era, the fort’s dilapidated buildings, barracks and batteries are atmospheric to explore. While it once covered a huge area, most of it now lies in ruin, overgrown with plants, trees, and shrubs.

While an interpretive center, paths and other facilities are currently under construction, the fort is still well worth wandering around now as its decaying armaments and outbuildings make for such an arresting sight.

5. Spanish Moss Trail

Winding its way through South Carolina’s Lowcountry, the scenic Spanish Moss Trail is a treat to hike, run or bike along. Popular with locals and tourists alike, it takes you past spellbinding scenery with interesting historic sites, beautiful views, and charming neighborhoods also dotted along the route.

Now stretching 14 miles in length, the paved path follows the bed of the former Port Royal Railroad as it meanders its way alongside the Beaufort River. Opened in 2012, it connects Seabrook to Port Royal and passes through parts of Burton and Beaufort on the way.

Aside from basking in phenomenal views of the wetlands and their wildlife, you can also see some incredible old antebellum homes with Spanish moss-covered trees – one of the symbols of the South – wherever you go.

4. Pat Conroy Literary Center

Just ten minutes’ walk west of Waterfront Park you can find another of the city’s top attractions: the Pat Conroy Literary Center. Named after the acclaimed South Carolinian author who lived in Beaufort, it has excellent exhibits on his life and literary works for you to peruse.

Founded in 2016, the state-of-the-art center is a fitting tribute to one of America’s best loved authors who passed away earlier that same year. As well as housing a collection of his memorabilia, it also displays passages from his books that highlight his love for the Lowcountry and the city which inspired his famous works such as The Great Santini and The Prince of Tides.

As it regularly hosts talks, readings and writing classes, the center aims to keep his legacy alive by encouraging and supporting writers of all ages to follow in his footsteps.

3. Bay Street

Lined by bustling businesses, handsome historic homes and innumerable art galleries, the busy Bay Street lies right at the heart of life in town. Running alongside the Beaufort River, the vibrant street has a wealth of things for you to see and do and boasts delightful views out over the river and bay.

Set at the center of the Beaufort Historic District, it has countless shops and waterfront restaurants with interesting historic sites and museums. Aside from visiting places, such as John Mark Verdier House and the Santa Elena History Center, there are also unique and exquisite art galleries to check out.

In addition, visitors can take horse-drawn carriage rides along the scenic street which is bordered by pretty parks and the reflective river.

2. Waterfront Park

Located between both the Beaufort River and Bay Street is another of the city’s most popular and picturesque places to visit: the wonderful Waterfront Park. Home to some lovely scenery and views, its green spaces lie in the Historic District, just a stone’s throw from many of Beaufort’s main tourist attractions.

Founded in 1975, it is actually named after the town’s former mayor Henry C. Chambers who spent much of his career campaigning for parks and public spaces to replace the dilapidated old docks that used to clutter the waterfront. Thanks to his efforts, locals and tourists enjoy its peaceful paths, picnic areas and playgrounds.

Stop off for a coffee at a cafe, shop in the nearby stores or attend one of the numerous cultural events and festivals that take place in the park each year.

1. Hunting Island State Park

Half an hour’s drive east of town you can find Hunting Island State Park, home to some of the most stunning coastal scenery in the state. Besides a breathtaking beach, it has an amazing old lighthouse with countless outdoor activities on offer.

One of the only undeveloped Sea Islands in the Lowcountry, the secluded semitropical barrier island offers spellbinding scenery and views. As well as its pristine beach and tidal lagoons, the park also includes maritime forests and marshes. Many of Forrest Gump’s Vietnam War scenes were shot here.

Learn about the local wildlife, and see alligators, turtles, racoons and rattlesnakes. Stop by its nineteenth century lighthouse and enjoy fantastic views from up high. With excellent hiking, swimming and camping also on offer, the picture-perfect Hunting Island State Park is definitely not to be missed out on when in Beaufort.

This Small Coastal Town in South Carolina Has Charleston-like Charm Without the Crowds

Here’s what to know about visiting Beaufort, one of South Carolina’s most beautiful towns.

Charleston may get most of the attention when it comes to South Carolina’s many cities, but the history, culture, and (of course) Southern charm that make it so special can also be found in smaller and less expensive places in the region. If you’ve ever watched “Forrest Gump” or read anything by the late author Pat Conroy, you may be familiar with Beaufort, a harbor town on Port Royal Island. Its narrow streets, oak trees, and historic district that pre-dates the Civil War are similar to those in Charleston, but Beaufort is remarkable and magical in its own right. Plus, it doesn’t draw the same crowds that tend to flock to notable Holy City hangouts like King Street, Folly Beach, and the Battery.

Before you read any further, though, you need to know how to properly pronounce the name. Not to be confused with Beaufort, North Carolina (said like “bow-fert”), the coastal town has a pronunciation more akin to “bew-fert.” Mistaking the two will immediately identify you as a tourist — and it won’t sit too well with the locals. Once you have that squared away, you can start planning your trip to Beaufort, the second-oldest city in South Carolina.

In 1969, Beaufort became one of the few U.S. cities with an entire downtown designated as a historic district by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, so exploring the neighborhoods filled with Victorian, Greek Revival, Neoclassical, and Federal-style homes is at the top of most travelers’ lists. At Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park , you’ll spot Woods Memorial Bridge, recognizable from the aforementioned Tom Hanks blockbuster. Stretching your legs is also encouraged along the Spanish Moss Trail , a 10-mile greenway that weaves by Beaufort’s marshes and through trees draped in Spanish moss. Given its waterfront location, Beaufort should also be experienced by boat; book a Dolphin & History Boat Cruise with Coastal Expeditions or an ecology tour with Beaufort Kayak Tours . Paddleboarding is another option, with rental equipment available at Higher Ground Outfitters . 

Beaufort’s ties to the literary world are strong; visiting the Pat Conroy Literary Center (Beaufort was Conroy’s adopted hometown) or one of the three independent bookstores in town —  NeverMore Books , McIntosh Book Shoppe , and Beaufort Books — is a must for book lovers. For those interested in local art, there’s the Gullah Art Gallery and Museum , Legacy Art Gallery , Rhett Gallery , Thibault Gallery , or Atelier Off Bay .

Many of the best things to do in Beaufort are found further outside of downtown. About 17 miles east is Hunting Island State Park, with its pristine beaches , marshes, maritime forest, saltwater lagoon, and the Hunting Island Lighthouse , which was destroyed during the Civil War and rebuilt in 1875. St. Helena Island (a 13-minute drive away) is home to Penn Center — one of the United States’ first schools for formerly enslaved individuals — as well as the family-owned Dempsey Farms , where you can pick in-season fruits and vegetables. Local produce can also be acquired on Saturdays at the nearby Port Royal Farmers Market .

Beaufort Hotels

An overnight trip to Beaufort is best accompanied by a stay in one of the town’s upscale inns. Slow Southern mornings paired with a home-cooked breakfast can be enjoyed on the expansive wooden porch at The Rhett House Inn . Guests can also book the more modern Rhett House Inn Cottages, which sit across the street from the main building. Once a Union Army hospital, Anchorage 1770 overlooks the Beaufort River and offers a fine dining experience at the Ribaut Social Club. The Beaufort Inn first opened its doors in 1897, and the property’s modern-day chapter features several fully renovated buildings within the town’s historic district.

Where to Eat and Drink in Beaufort, South Carolina

As with most Southern cities and towns, food is a major part of the local culture. If you’re a traveler who plans their vacations around meals, you’ll want to start your day at Blackstone’s Cafe or Herban Market and Cafe . If you’re exploring Beaufort during the day and want something quick, order a fried chicken sandwich or po’boy from Lowcountry Produce Market & Cafe . Chapman’s Grocer also has grab-and-go treats, wine, and craft beer. Old Bull Tavern is a lively gastropub open only for dinner, Saltus River Grill is great for indulging in seafood, and those craving Italian should dine at Griffin Market . Gullah Grub Restaurant on St. Helena Island is one of the area’s most famous restaurants (it appeared on Anthony Bourdain : No Reservations ); get the shrimp gumbo.

A South Carolina summer is hot and humid — there’s no getting around that. To explore Beaufort in the most comfortable climate, your best bet is to go in either early spring or late fall. April and October are ideal for having plenty to do (winter is far from bustling) while simultaneously avoiding the sweltering weather synonymous with the South.

Getting There

If you’re flying into Hilton Head Airport (HHH) or Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) — both are under an hour away  — you’ll need to rent a car to fully experience Beaufort and its surrounding area. Charleston International Airport (CHS) is also an option, although it’ll take about 90 minutes to get to Beaufort. 

11 Historic Beaufort Sites that Everybody Should See

With over three centuries of incorporation, and visitors coming two hundred years before 1711, beaufort sits today as a living history, a place where the past and present exist together every day. while the area is full of historical marvels, there are some spots, in particular, you simply have to see and experience. do yourself a favor and put these historic beaufort destinations on your itinerary..

Beaufort’s roots go way back to 1711, but its story goes back even further. A true hotbed for history, it all began 500 years ago with the discovery of the area by the Spanish. Being a seaport located at the head of one of the largest natural harbors on the Atlantic coast explains the interest of the Spanish and French explorers that laid claim to the area.

In fact, America started right here in Beaufort. The Spanish settlement at Santa Elena on Parris Island is dated 11 years before St. Augustine, 38 years before Jamestown, and 51 years before the English pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock. That makes it the first attempt of European colonization of the new world.

1. Prince William’s Parish Church (Old Sheldon Church Ruins)

One of the most sacred spots in all of the Carolina Lowcountry is the ruins of the Prince William’s Parish Church, known today as the Old Sheldon Church. The church was built between 1745 and 1753 and is said to be the first conscious attempt in America to imitate a Greek temple. Prince William was burned by the British in 1779 during the Revolutionary War. In 1826 it was rebuilt and legend says it was later burnt by William Tecumseh Sherman in 1865 during his march through the south.

Its sacred grounds are said to be haunted…but they are undeniably beautiful. The site was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on October 22nd, 1970.

2. Hunting Island Lighthouse

One of the most recognizable and most beloved landmarks in the Beaufort area is the historic Hunting Island Lighthouse. The only lighthouse in South Carolina where you can climb all the way to the top, its history started with its construction in 1859, but was set back as the tower was destroyed during the Civil War in 1862 by Confederate forces so the Union Navy would not be able to use it for navigation.

Construction started again in 1873, and was completed in 1875. It was first located on the northern part of Hunting Island, but severe beach erosion threatened it and its accompanying structures. In 1888 the Atlantic Ocean’s high tide had reached within 35 feet of the keeper’s house.  As a result, the Lighthouse, the keeper’s home and two other structures were relocated a mile away in 1889 to their present location.  With its 167 steps that lead to an impressive observation deck, the Hunting Island Lighthouse has a beautifully built wrought iron staircase, railings and support beams…and should be on everyone’s list of must-see historic Beaufort spots.

3. Chapel of Ease

This beautiful relic of a church known as the ‘Chapel of Ease’ is located on St. Helena Island. In the 1700s, the main church of Beaufort was too far away for the many planters who lived on the island to travel back and forth to worship, so the Anglican Church established the chapel to help the families attend church on a regular basis.

Built in 1740 and made of tabby, the chapel served the area until Union troops came ashore in November of 1861.  On November 4th, 1861 Sunday services were interrupted by a messenger who brought news of the impending invasion of nearby Beaufort by Union troops.  With the arrival of those forces in 1861, the church never again regained its stature.

The church was burned by forest fire in 1886 and it was never rebuilt. It still stands as a wonderful reminder of an extraordinary era.

4. Fort Fremont 

Located on St. Helena Island all the way at Land’s End, Fort Fremont is a Spanish American War fort built in 1899 as one of the coastal batteries authorized by Congress under the $50 million Harbor Fortification Act of 1898. Luckily the war was a short one and the Spanish never made it to St. Helena or Port Royal Sound, and no shot was ever fired from the fort.  No threat, or call-to-arms was ever even made.

In 1921,the property was placed on the Secretary of War’s list of properties considered as obsolete and not needed for military purposes, and was deactivated as a military installation in 1921.

Beautiful, eerie and mysterious, and lying right along the water, the fort’s grounds and battery are open free to the public and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Historic Resources of St. Helena Island.

5. The Beaufort Arsenal

The Beaufort Arsenal is one of the most significant historic buildings in all of Beaufort with over 200 years of service. Completed in 1798 at the whopping cost of $2,500, the original structure was built of tabby and covered with tiles with a wall surrounding it that was also made of tabby.

The Arsenal was the home of the Beaufort Volunteer Artillery, commissioned in 1802, which had its roots in an earlier company organized in 1776 during the Revolutionary War. After the Civil War, the Arsenal became a place for hosting social events and military ceremonies. in 1878, the Beaufort Volunteer Artillery was reorganized and in 1892 the BVA became the South Carolina National Guard.

Today residents and visitors alike enjoy this beautiful and majestic symbol of Beaufort’s important past.

6. Penn Center

Take a trip back in time in Beaufort where you can still witness a thriving local Gullah culture in the Beaufort area through arts, historical preservation projects, community groups, and historic Penn Center.  Penn Center was formed as Penn School in 1862, and it was the very first school for freed slaves in the U.S., and is now a Gullah Community Center on St. Helena Island.  Penn Center also serves as the unofficial capital of Gullah Culture on the southeast Atlantic Coast.  During the 1960′s, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference chose Penn Center as a site for it’s strategic planing.

For more than 150 years, Penn Center has been at the epicenter of African American education, historic preservation and social justice for tens of thousands of descendants of formerly enslaved West Africans living in the Sea Islands. These people have continued to survive to today and represent the most tangible living example of one of the outcomes of the Port Royal Experiment, a plan by the federal government to “test the capabilities of former slaves for freedom and self-support” during the Civil War.

It’s considered one of the most significant African American historical and cultural institutions in existence today. You will go back in time when you visit Penn Center.

The late Pat Conroy, a long-time Beaufort resident, once said, “A recipe is a story that ends with a good meal.” Situated between Charleston and Savannah in the heart of the Lowcountry, Conroy’s beloved Beaufort seemingly has the recipe for a more manageable version of both tasty and tasteful cities. That’s true with the restaurant scene as well, in that the choices are fewer — but equally as interesting and creative.

Health experts consider dining out to be a high-risk activity for the unvaccinated; the latest data about the delta variant indicates that it may pose a low-to-moderate risk for the vaccinated , especially in areas with substantial transmission . Fishcamp on 11th Street

Overlooking the Beaufort River and shrimp boats in nearby Port Royal, Fishcamp on 11th Street — part of the CRAB restaurant group from Hilton Head Island — offers up views and sunsets that are matched by a seafood-focused menu, including “chill-bar” oysters and shrimp, seafood towers, lobster bisque, Lowcountry boils, blackened and fried seafood, and entrees like risotto with lobster tail and Daufuskie Island blue crab cakes.

Beaufort’s Blacksheep is arguably one of the top restaurants to open in the Carolinas since the outbreak of Covid. Though it continues to evolve, the concept has remained the same: offer a fixed-price menu for an extended period (currently a month) with limited choices (currently six, with a choice of three). “Cook/Owner” (his words) Matt Wallace and general manager Krista Duffy (the two comprise Blacksheep’s entire staff) have created something very special in the former Crosta pizza place. Wallace prepares a majority of the dishes in Blacksheep’s black-and-white wood-fired pizza oven.

Ribaut Social Club

Located in Anchorage 1770, a premier boutique inn on Bay Street, the Ribaut Social Club is a fine dining destination featuring the cuisine of executive chef Daniel Salazar. The short menu offers creative takes on meats, seafood, and fresh vegetables, including the painterly beet “ravioli,” with roasted beets, ricotta, goat cheese, rainbow carrot ribbons and a pistachio mouse all served up on the massive front porch of the pre-Revolutionary (though, the timeline is often disputed) mansion.

With an outdoor patio overlooking the Beaufort River, the vibe at Plums is casually coastal and so is the menu, with classic fried shrimp or oyster po’ boys, burgers, and other standards. But, locals know to dig more deeply into the offerings, including shrimp and grits, the signature Lowcountry gumbo, and delectable crab cakes.

Old Bull Tavern

Old Bull Tavern’s chef and owner John Marshall will be remembered by many Charlestonians as the former founder of beloved Al Di La. OBT — as locals call it — features lots of creative takes on Lowcountry favorites (like Marshall’s pork chops with collard greens and the Lowcountry Captain), popular wood-fired pizzas, and former Al Di La specialties, including the gnocchi with fresh local shrimp, tomatoes, and basil.

Hearth Wood Fired Pizza

Situated on busy Bay Street, rustic-styled Hearth Wood Fired Pizza is where unique and classic pizzas reign supreme. With its stunning red domed Marra Forni brick oven taking center stage, pizza faves include the margherita and the ‘Shroomage. There are also interesting starters (like the meat and cheese board), salads, sandwiches (the Italian Hero is seriously stuffed) and pastas, like the wood-fired lasagna. Set on a Waterfront Park overlooking the Beaufort River, Saltus River Grill is where locals and visitors head for a fine dining experience. It focuses on fresh catch and seafood specialties, with raw bar selections and creative sushi as well. The atmosphere is sophisticated but casual, and there’s a bustling bar and a popular patio with a fire pit.

Lowcountry Produce Market & Café

Lowcountry Produce is a market and cafe that locals love to head to for breakfast, lunch, and interesting gourmet finds. Ideally situated on the way to (or from) Hunting Island State Park and Fripp Island, those in the know stop by in the morning for a breakfast sandwich (like the very popular Brekkie Sando with eggs, sausage or bacon, cheese and caramelized onions wrapped up in chipotle aioli) or grits bowl and come again in the afternoon for a burger, fried bologna, or pimento cheese sandwich. The namesake Beedo burger is a tasty smashburger with griddled onions and the perfect ratio of bun to burger.

South Carolina Is Home to 76 National Historic Landmarks… These 5 Are the Best Ones to Visit

B eginning in 1935, the United States began an increased effort to preserve important historical places around the country. It took until 1960 for the National Historic Landmark program to come to fruition under the authority of the National Park Service and, later, as a segment of the National Register of Historic Places. Today, there are over 2,600 National Historic Landmarks (NHLs) throughout the country. According to the National Park Service , “The designation of a property as an NHL:

• Preserves the stories of nationally important historic events, places, and people for all Americans.
• Helps to protect the historic character of the property from any federal action.
• Might facilitate eligibility for grants, tax credits, and other opportunities to maintain its historic character.”

Some states naturally have more NHLs than others, with a majority clustered on the East Coast where early colonists jumpstarted American history. South Carolina , as one of the original 13 colonies with a rich history, is home to 76 NHLs. With so many to visit, we’ve rounded up the top five best sites to explore on your next trip to the Palmetto State .

1. Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum — Mount Pleasant, SC

Okay, this first location is a bit of a cheat. The museum itself isn’t recognized as an NHL, but several of the ships featured on the naval base are. With a single stop, you can visit two vessels listed as NHLs: both the U.S.S. Laffey and U.S.S. Yorktown rest at anchor in the Charleston Harbor.

The destroyer Laffey served in the D-Day invasion in 1944, the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, the blockade of Korea in 1952, and Cold War efforts between 1957 and 1964, earning the nickname “The Ship That Would Not Die.”

Yorktown , an aircraft carrier also known as the “Fighting Lady,” played a large role in the World War II offensive in the Pacific between 1943 and 1945, as well as during the Vietnam War between 1965 and 1968. She also rescued the crew and capsule from the Apollo 8 space mission in 1968.

The National Park Service designated both ships as NHLs in 1986, and both continue to serve as museum ships to educate and entertain visitors.

2. St. Philip’s Episcopal Church — Charleston, SC

St. Philip’s represents the oldest congregation in South Carolina and, in fact, the oldest congregation south of Virginia . The original wooden church took shape in 1681 at the current location of the St. Michael’s Episcopal Church on Broad and Meeting. The current St. Philip’s is now located on Church Street, a few blocks away, after being damaged in a hurricane and moved.

The rebuilt church features Tuscan porticoes and Roman columns, which contribute to a larger-than-life feeling within the church. The steeple, the last part of the church to be completed in 1850, stands tall enough to be used as a lighthouse that helped guide sailors into Charleson’s harbor until 1915. The church was designated an NHL in 1973 to protect its history and significance. 

3. Beaufort Historic District — Beaufort, SC

The second-oldest town in the state, Beaufort took shape on Port Royal Island in 1711. Many of the classic homes here take visitors back in time, before the Civil War. Most residents had already fled by the time Civil War armies reached the town, so they converted the buildings into hospitals, offices, and other useful purposes rather than destroy them. As such, historic Beaufort features breathtaking examples of antebellum construction, with homes designed in Federal, neoclassical, Greek Revival, and Queen Anne styles. Live oak trees hung with Spanish moss add to the atmosphere, as do the many graveyards, chapels, and businesses.

The National Register of Historic Places recognizes both the district as a whole and individual properties, including the Anchorage, the Barnwell-Gough House, Tabby Manse, and more. The district was recognized as an NHL in 1973, with two houses — the Marshlands and the Robert Smalls House — also recognized individually in 1973.

4. Burt-Stark Mansion — Abbeville, SC

The Burt-Stark Mansion goes by multiple other names, including the Armistead Burt House and “The Deathbed of the Confederacy.” This Greek Revival-style home was built in the 1830s and had seven owners before its donation to the Abbeville Historic Preservation Commission. Confederate President Jefferson Davis held his last council of the Civil War in the Burt-Stark Mansion in 1865, where he admitted the Confederacy had lost. After this meeting, the Confederacy dispersed.

The house was named a NHL in 1992 and continues to operate as a museum to the Old South. Period-accurate antiques, furniture, and artifacts fill the home, creating a time capsule for visitors to enjoy.

5. Atalaya and Brookgreen Gardens — Murrells Inlet, SC

Home of America’s first and largest formal sculpture garden, Atalaya and Brookgreen Gardens offer beautiful views for visitors. Atalaya, the expansive home on the property, features Spanish Revival architecture that echoes the styles found in coastal Spain . The house also includes the large studio space used by celebrated sculptor and philanthropist Anna Hyatt Huntington and where she produced much of her art.

Brookgreen Gardens encompasses more than 9,000 acres as a nature preserve, including 550 acres used as sculpture garden that showcases a wide breadth of Huntington’s sculptures alongside those of her contemporaries. The property’s designation as a NHL, which came in 1992, only includes the 550 acres of sculpture garden and the Atalaya buildings.

South Carolina contains many houses, buildings, and properties that contributed to the creation and formation of the United States. The beautiful historic homes, plantations, churches, and other areas help remind us of our history and commemorate our past in a way worth celebrating.
