Carnival Cruise Shore Excursions To Explore in Progreso

This amazing cruise ship port is a beautiful way to enjoy some of Mayan history. Within just moments of docking in this location, you’ll be able to venture out to many well-known Mayan sites that are open to visitors. While this is a wonderful addition to all of the excursions you’ll enjoy when ported at Progreso/Yucatan Cruise Ship port, there is much to enjoy when your cruise ship docks at this location in Mexico.

You’ll notice upon arrival at the port that Progreso is very different from other ports. This port is 4 miles long so you’ll be taking a bus from the port into the city if you are not going on an excursion. The ride is completely free and will drop you off at the specific spot in downtown. From there, you can take one of their tours or explore the city on your own.

While exploring Progreso, I felt completely safe but I would suggest going on an excursion with Carnival to get the most bang for your buck. Today I’m sharing all of the fun excursions you can enjoy when your cruise ship docks at Progreso Cruise Ship Port.

Pink Flamingos – Lagoon Boat Ride & Swim with Lounge

Enjoy Celestun Biosphere Reserve where over 300 bird species migrate or live with the beautiful pink flamingos. This boat trip takes approximately one hour and forty-five minutes. You’ll get to enjoy the best spot for viewing flamingos first hand while taking amazing photos of all of the bird species found during your boat ride.

Sacred Cavern Expedition and Snorkeling Adventure

When you opt to enjoy this excursion you’ll quickly find out whey the Mayans used these caverns cenotes to speak to their gods. You’ll be able to swim inside the cavern to witness rock formations, stalactites, and stalagmites and leave this excursion in awe of the natural beauty found here.

Progreso Cruise Port Guide: Things to Do, Tips, & Getting Around

Taking a short cruise from Galveston or New Orleans? Then the chances are high that you’ll be making a stop in Progreso, Mexico.

A port city on the northern side of the Yucatan Peninsula, Progreso started welcoming cruise ships a few years ago. The increase in foreign tourists is slowing transforming the city and its facilities, but if you’re looking for a taste of “real” Mexico, Progreso is your best bet among cruise ports in the area.

In fact, cruise passengers expecting a port similar to Cozumel — well known for its large resorts and catering to American tourists — should know that Progreso is very different. It still has a rustic “old Mexico” feel. The unique setting, however, can make Progreso one of the most interesting ports of call to visit.

From the world’s longest pier to stellar beaches to being a gateway to Mayan ruins, the port offers plenty to experience while still serving up authentic Mexican culture.

Arriving in Progreso on a Cruise

You’d be forgiven if upon reaching Progreso you weren’t sure you were actually there. While some cruise ports may sit offshore and tender passengers into the port, other ports are simply docks that sit just a few hundred feet from the shore.

Progreso isn’t like either of those. The pier where the cruise ship docks is famous for being the longest in the world at approximately four miles long . That means once your cruise ship docks, you’re still quite a ways from the actual city. Luckily, there is a shuttle that will take you back and forth from the cruise ship to the city for free .

As you exit the ship, you will make your way through a small market with vendors selling all sorts of souvenirs, including a couple of spots selling cold (and cheap!) alcoholic beverages, soda, and water. After leaving the market, you’ll see the sign for the free shuttle, which is provided by a tour company in Progreso.

The sign says that the shuttle leaves every 20 minutes. We found that shuttles run more frequently in the morning when the ship first arrives and passengers make their way into town.

Once on the bus, it’s about a 10-15 minute ride into town. Once you arrive, you’ll be at a small bus station run by the tour company providing the ride. Be warned, this spot can get pretty busy on cruise day. With vendors selling their wares and thousands of tourists coming off the ship, it will be hectic. While the exits aren’t clearly marked, simply follow the crowd to make your way out to the street.

One thing you should be prepared for is for vendors to be asking you at every turn to take a look at their shops. If you aren’t used to it, this can be a overwhelming. If you aren’t interested, just give a polite “no thank you” and keep moving.

If you plan to head to the beach (the main attraction in Progreso) it’s a short walk from the bus station. Here’s a map:

Progreso Beaches

While most cruise passengers aren’t sure what they should do when visiting the port, Progreso’s beaches are a gem. The city has a malecon (a broad walkway next to the beach) that offers white-sand beaches on one side and a number of restaurants on the other.

Beaches are usually a hub of activity with cruise ship passengers, locals, and visitors from Merida all converging to enjoy the beauty. Many restaurants offer loungers and umbrellas on the beach that you can use for free as long as you order food or drinks.

The beaches are definitely a playground. With a wide expanse of sand you’ll likely see volleyball or soccer games being played, sunbathers, swimmers, and vendors. Beaches in Mexico are free for the public to use and you can setup anywhere you like. There are no areas that are for restaurant customers only (although loungers and umbrellas will be for customers only).

If you simply want to spend a day on the beach, Progreso is a great place to do that. One piece of advice is to head farther down the beach if you’re looking for a less crowded area to spend the day. The area right next to the pier can get busy.

How’s the water? It can vary widely. Having visited multiple times, we’ve seen the water be a beautiful turquoise green and a muddy brown. It depends weather and currents.

What to Do in Progreso on a Cruise

If you’re visiting the port while on your cruise, what is there to do? We cover some of the most popular options below…

Visit the Beach Just want cheap and easy? Then it doesn’t get any easier than just heading to the beach. As you come into town on the shuttle, you’ll see a wide swatch of beautiful white beach on both sides of the pier. The beach offers plenty of space, along with a number of restaurants, shops, and things to see. 

Just keep in mind that the water quality can vary greatly. Some days it can be a nice turquoise color while other days it can be more of a muddy brown. It depends on currents and weather. 

See the Nuevo Malecon International One of the newer things to do in Progreso is a new promenade for tourists to enjoy. As you drive in, it will be on your right. You’ll see things like the Ferris wheel and other attractions. The “Nuevo Malecon International” features amusement rides, sculptures, photo ops, and more. It’s a place where you can explore a little, take a stroll, and enjoy the scenery. 

Check Out Dinosaurs at the Museo del Meteorito If you have kids, then Museo del Meteorito might be the place to visit. The Yucatan is known for being the impact area of the meteor believe to have caused the dinosaurs to go extinct. This place pays homage, featuring all sorts of dinosaur exhibits, fossils, and more. 

It might not be what you had in mind when you think of a beach town, but as a family destination, it should be high on the list. You can find it beachfront, just about a half-mile east of the pier to the cruise ship.

Enjoy a Bite to Eat Off the Ship Even if you don’t want to head to the beach, it is a great spot to find a bite to eat off the ship. The main promenade right near the pier and the beach features a number of restaurants — including spots where you can have a drink or a meal with your feet in the sand. There’s plenty of beach food (tacos, burgers, seafood) for you to take your pick from.

One popular spot is Eladio’s , which is rated nearly 4.5 stars on Google after more than 10,000 reviews. It’s also right at the corner of the beach and the pier, making it convenient. 

Tour the Famous Mayan Ruins The Yucatan used to be a hive of activity among ancient Mayans. Today their former cities are fascinating to visit, giving a glimpse into the ancient cultures that lived there hundreds of years ago.

The ruins of Chichen Itza and Uxmal are both reachable from Progreso with cruise lines offering excursions. If you want to save some money, the tour company offering the shuttle from the cruise ship ( AutoProgreso Tours ) has trips to these sites for much less than the cruise excursion.

Swim in an Unspoiled Cenote Never heard of a cenote (pronounced see-no-tay)? It’s a massive sinkhole that results from water eroding the limestone bedrock. The result is a huge pit that fills in with crystal clear freshwater from underground rivers. Cenotes aren’t just beautiful, they offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience to swim in some of the most amazing surroundings you can imagine.

The area around Progreso is filled with cenotes and there are a number of tours that offer a stop at one as part of the trip.

Merida If you’re a fan of history, then a trip to Merida is just the thing. The city of roughly 1 million was founded by the Spanish in the 1500s and is just about 30 minutes from Progreso. From museums to old Spanish architecture (including ancient churches) to food, Merida is a fascinating city with a lot to see.

It is recommended that you take a tour guide to go to see the city. You’ll get a lot more from your visit and also have some help to avoid you from getting lost.

Getting Back to the Ship

Ready to head back to the ship after your visit? For that you will head back to the same station where the shuttle dropped you off to start your day. Be careful — the last shuttle leaves one hour before the ship leaves . We suggest giving yourself plenty of time to get back to the ship as the last few shuttles can be busy.

If you make it back in plenty of time and are still looking for a place to go instead of getting back on the ship, there is a bar right near the cruise pier and just steps away from the boat. The bar offers cheap drinks (especially compared to the cruise ship), thumping music and also has several pools you can relax in if you didn’t get enough beach time.

One thing to keep in mind is that on our last visit to Progreso, this cool little bar was closed. It’s not clear if that’s a permanent change or just temporary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the shuttle pickup to go down the Progreso Pier and into town? The free shuttle stop is at the end of the cruise port complex. To get there, you’ll want to follow the pathway through the duty-free area, as well as a number of shops and some small vendors selling drinks.

It may seem simple, but follow the crowd to get to the pickup spot. There you will see a sign and if you are leaving during the busy morning then you are sure to see the buses loading up.

The ride into town is free, and takes about 15 minutes.

Where do I go to catch the shuttle to go back to the ship?

When you arrive into town, you’ll be dropped off at a bus station. You’ll return here to get a ride back to the cruise ship. Keep in mind that the last bus leaves an hour before the ship departs — so be sure to get back to the bus station at least an hour an a half before your ship departs.

You don’t want to be stuck waiting on a bus because the other ones are full with people trying to make it back to the ship in time.

I don’t speak Spanish. Can I get around in Progreso on a cruise stop?

Don’t speak the local language? It’s not a big deal. As with other ports that cater to cruise ships coming from the United States, the locals in the tourist trade speak great English. Some small shopkeepers might speak broken English, but for the most part you won’t have any trouble getting around.

Yes, you can’t walk down the pier. It’s way too long.

I vacation in Progreso and have always been curious about the pier and the bars and shops on the pier. Do you have to be a cruise passenger to use the shuttle or can you walk the pier?

There are some security checks going onto the pier. We’re not sure if they would let you on if you aren’t a passenger.

Can you tell me what facilities are on the Pier near where the Cruise ships are moored. On the picture above, it says that the bar near the cruise ship has cheap drinks and swimming pools. Can you confirm if this is on the pier please.

So the Progreso pier is extremely long with not a lot in between the ships and town. Right by the dock, however, there is a small bar area with the pools. Just beyond that is a little walkway with a couple of dozen shops for souvenirs of all types.

We were in Progreso in May of 2018, and the big, round shaped shop at the cruise pier was closed and empty. We shopped at the little booths behind it and got back on board. The locals were too pushy for me.

Are there lockers to rent at the free beach in Progreso?

We don’t know of any. We suggest a dry bag that allows you to bring your things with you in the water without them getting wet.

At present there are NO lockers available at the public Beach. However, we have made a recommendation directly to the Tourism Office/Mayer in Progreso, in hopes that it would be a consideration in the future.

I am going to be taking a cruise to Progreso in May and am totally wheelchair bound. Cannot walk at all. What can I do in Progreso or nearby that isn’t just shopping?

Janet — We’re not 100% sure of everything you can do, but you can definitely go to the main area of the port (near the pier) where there is a malecon with shops and restaurants. We aren’t sure about beach access there with a wheelchair, but it is right along the beach. If you want something else completely, check out the excursions offered by your cruise line. They will be able to tell you which ones are accessible.

Many great options are provided through the tour company you referenced. I noticed, however, that they want you to leave all your belongings on the bus (except water and camera) when visiting the ruins. That seems like a very unsafe choice to leave purses and such behind. Can you elaborate on this practice?

Elizabeth, we’re not familiar with that practice. It’s not something we’d want to do either. We would politely refuse or find a different company. You can also get one of the travel belts that fit under your clothes to put in things like passports and cash.

We don’t know the exact hours, but it should be open while the ship is there. If your friends returned to the ship late, it might have been closed. To be sure, just head there as you depart the ship in the morning.

But if you’re coming to Mexico by air, the nearest international airport is located in Mérida. This airport services flights from the United States, and also serves domestic destinations too. 

If you’re planning to drive a car in Mexico to transport you to your Progreso activities, you can get to Progreso via Mérida, where you can rent your car. And if you’re traveling by bus from elsewhere in Mexico, you’ll need to get a bus into Mérida. From there, you can hire a taxi to take you to Progreso. 

Alternatively, you can book the Merida Progreso autobus. This Progreso to Merida bus is offered by Autoprogreso. The bus terminal in Progreso is located on Calle 29 and 80. Tickets cost 21 pesos (a little over $1 USD) for one way, and 38 pesos (less than $2 USD) for round trip.

Getting around Progreso and where to stay in Progreso

While in Progreso, it’s fairly easy to walk around the city. Progreso is very safe for families. The streets have sidewalks, and some streets, like the Callejón del Amor (on Calle 23), are specifically designed for pedestrians. If you stay close to Centro (the center of the city) or the Malecón (the beachside boardwalk), you’ll have access to plenty of restaurants and Progreso activities.

There are no Ubers in Progreso, but there are taxis available. For families, however, renting a car is a good option. Having access to a car allows you to easily explore all the things to do in Progreso, and makes Progreso excursions outside the city easier as well.

If you’re having trouble finding a Progreso Airbnb or other vacation rentals within the city, try looking outside the city in towns like Chelem or Chuburná. While it requires renting a car, you’ll be able to rent some nice beachfront places at fairly affordable prices. Progreso tends to be a popular spot for retirees and snowbirds who want to avoid the crowds of Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

Other things to know about progreso.

As in most parts of the Yucatán peninsula, many people in Progreso have Mayan heritage. This means you’ll have a chance to experience Mayan culture through dishes like cochinita pibil (pork that has been slow cooked underground) or pavo relleno negro (turkey that’s been slow cooked underground in a pumpkin seed-based broth).

It’s worth spending some time getting to know Mayan culture while you’re in Progreso. Some ways to do this can be reading books about Mexico before your trip, or seeking out traditional Mayan experiences, like a temazcal ceremony , while you’re in Mexico.

2. Progreso Activities | Spend a beach day at the Malecón

Progreso’s proximity to the beach is one of the many draws of this town. Since it’s located along the Gulf of California, you won’t find surfing at the Progreso Mexico beaches. However, families can still spend a day playing in the waves. As with any public space in Mexico, you’ll find hawkers walking along the beach selling things like snacks, fruit, or bracelets.

The Malecón, Progreso’s beachfront boardwalk, borders the main beach in Progreso. It runs from the corner of Calle 19 and Calle 80, and ends at Calle 60. The paved boardwalk is wide, so there’s plenty of room for families to stroll and enjoy the ocean views.

Along the Malecón, you’ll find a large selection of Progreso restaurants, many of them selling seafood. So after spending an afternoon at the beach, you can head over to the restaurants along the Malecon for dinner. The prices will be fairly inflated, due to the location. But if you want dining with a beach view, then this is the spot.

3. Progreso Activities | Enjoy La Ria Progreso

For families looking for low key water activities, renting kayaks with La Ria Progreso is a must! La Ria Progreso is located along Calle 37, east of highway 261. The dock leads into the mangrove forest, located southwest of Progreso.

Families can rent kayaks to explore the mangroves. Kayak rentals are hourly, at 100 pesos for singles and 200 pesos for doubles. Families can also rent paddleboards for 250 pesos per hour. Life jackets are available for adults and kids of all sizes.

4. Progreso Activities | Visit Reserva Ecológica El Corchito

To the south of Progreso is Reserva Ecológica El Corchito (also known as El Corchito Ecological Reserve in English) where you will see cenotes for swimming. Cenotes are sinkholes in limestone bedrock that are filled with fresh water. These natural pools can be found all over the Yucatán peninsula. During Mayan times, they were used for sources of drinking water.

There are three main cenotes at the biosphere reserve of El Corchito, ranging from less than 1 meter (around 3 feet) deep to over 2 meters deep (around 6 feet). There is also a small cenote, roughly 2 meters (6 feet) in diameter that is exclusively for dipping your feet in. The fish in this particular cenote like to nibble the dead skin off your feet! 

Reserva Ecologica El Corchito is open every day, from 9am to 4pm. The entrance to the reserve is located on Calle 27, near the roundabout on Calle 46. From the entrance, you take a boat across the estuary into the reserve. Admission to El Corchito costs 90 pesos (roughly $4.50 USD) for adults, and 35 pesos (roughly $1.75 pesos) for children, making it an affordable option for a cenote Progreso Mexico experience

5. Progreso Activities | Experience Laguna Rosada

Laguna Rosada gets its name from the red hue of its waters. This red coloring comes from the algae that live in the lagoon. Flamingos like to come to this lake to feed on the algae. 

You can rent kayaks to explore the mangroves at Laguna Rosada through Reserva Ecológica Sayalchaltun. Or you can take a guided boat tour of the lake. Rates start from 100 pesos (roughly $5 USD) per hour. The reserve is open every day from 7am to 4pm.

Alternatively, you can take a visit to the traditional salt ponds of Laguna Rosada. Workers harvest pink salt from shallow pools fed from the lake. You can purchase a package of locally harvested Mexican pink salt for 10 pesos (roughly $.50 USD) a package.

6. Progreso Activities | Visit Zona Arqueológica Xcambo

Nearby to Laguna Rosada is the Progreso Mayan ruins found at Zona Arqueologica Xcambo. Located less than 30 minutes away from Progreso, this site was a former commercial port city within the Mayan empire. 

The Xcambo site is small, but there are several pyramid structures to see surrounding an open space. Xcambo is open every day from 8am to 5pm. The fee for Xcambo is 75 pesos (roughly $3.75 USD) per adult. Children under 13 are free.

7. Progreso Activities | Visit Zona Arqueologica de Chichen Itza

Chichén Itzá is an archaeological site in Yucatan and one of the most visited locations in Mexico due to its close proximity to Cancun. It’s classified as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site . 

From Progreso, Chichen Itza is roughly 98 miles (158 kilometers) and takes about two and a half hours to drive there by car. Chichen Itza is open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entrance fee to Chichén Itzá is 498 pesos (roughly $25 USD) for foreign visitors.

8. Progreso Activities | Visit Zona Arqueológica de Dzibilchaltun

Families visiting Progreso don’t have to travel all the way to Chichen Itza to learn about Mayan history. Zona Arqueológica Dzibilchaltun, located just 25 kilometers south of Progreso, is a convenient place to learn about the history of the Mayans. 

Dating from as early as the late Precalssical period of Mayan history to the late Postclassical period, the main feature of the ruins complex is the Temple of the Seven Dolls. The Dzibilchaltun Museum, located near the ruin entrance, offers exhibits to help visitors learn more about the complex. There is also a cenote, called Cenote Xlacah, that visitors can visit during the weekdays.

Dzibilchaltun is open for visitors every day of the week from 8:30 or 9 am to 4 pm. Entrance to Dzibilchaltun is 231 pesos (roughly $12 USD) for foreigner adults, and 75 pesos (roughly $3.75) for kids. During your visit to Dzibilchaltun and other Mayan historical sites, remember to be responsible and respectful of the site, and follow the posted rules.

9. Progreso Activities | Spend a day at Uxmal and ChocoStory

Another archaeological site that you can’t miss is Uxmal. This site has one of the most representative architectures of the Puuc region. Uxmal is located 52 miles (84km) from Mérida and is open every day from 8am to 5pm. The fee to enter is 418 pesos (roughly $21 USD) per person. 

While visiting Uxmal, be sure to incorporate a visit to ChocoStory as well. This open air museum showcases the history of cacao and also shows how cacao is consumed in Mexico. Families will get a chance to taste traditional Mexican cacao.

10. Progreso Activities | Take a day trip to Mérida

For a taste of history and culture, as you’re thinking of things to do in Progreso, head south to the city of Mérida. Just a 30 or 40 minute drive from Progreso, Mérida has no shortage of activities for families . 

A city of over 600,000 people, Mérida has a large selection of restaurants, parks, and museums for families to visit. There are also several neighborhood markets and shopping malls to visit in the area, so you can experience both traditional and modern Mexican culture. Getting to Mérida is easy via highway 261.

11. Progreso Activities | See flamingos at Celestún

Another exciting excursion to take from Progreso is a visit to Celestún, on the western coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. A visit to the Reserva de la Biosfera Ria Celestún will give you the chance to see wild flamingos!

Celestún is about an hour and a half drive from Progreso. Just after you cross the bridge to enter the town of Celestún on highway 281, you’ll see a tourist stop where you can rent boats to explore the estuary and see the flamingos. Boat rentals cost 1,800 peso and come with a guide. 

The boat ride takes you around the estuary, to give you an up close and personal view of the flamingos. Like Laguna Rosada near Progreso, the estuary near Celestún is filled with red algae that makes the water look pink. This is also what gives the flamingos their bright pink hue. We loved seeing these magnificent birds in person and in the wild!

12. Progreso Activities | Enjoy Progreso Mexico kitesurfing and paddleboarding with AlphaSports 

Located on Calle 29, between Calle 132 and Calle 128, AlphaSports offers paddleboarding tours and rentals. They also offer private kiteboarding classes starting at 1,200 pesos (roughly $60 USD) per hour per person. 

For those renting paddleboards, rentals start at 750 pesos (roughly $37.50 USD) per hour. For an additional fee, AlphaSports can arrange delivery of the paddleboard to where you are staying, allowing you to rent for the whole day. If you’re staying on a beachfront property, this is a good option, as it allows families to enjoy paddleboarding for a whole afternoon.

Which CARNIVAL excursion do you rec at Yucatan (Progresso)?

I am asking about Carnival specific excursions.  I have been to Cozumel many times, but this will be our first time to cruise to Progresso.  Does anyone have a CCL excursion they recommend?  The ones that looked interesting to me were:

1.   Blue Hole, Cenotes & Swim Adventure  - ($85 per person) 4.3 stars on CCL website

2.  Chichen Itza, Cenote Swim & Buffet  ($125 per person)  - 4.7 stars on CCL website

3. Lazy River Tubing, Cavern Swim, and Mayapan Ruins ($115 per person) - 4.8 stars 

4.  Snorkel Underground Caverns & Shaman Ceremony   ($89) - 4.4 stars

All appear to include lunch.  All are anywhere from 6 to 7.5 hours.  Has anyone ever done any of these and would recommend them or not?  Which would you pick?  It will just be my husband and I.  No kids.  We are both in our 40s.  The main thing I want to do is swim in cenotes or caverns.

I guess I'm not a history buff. Chichen its bored me to tears and the heat killed my enthusiasm.  I spe t most of the excursion in the bar having the hugest margarita I could order and ordered chips and dips. There is no modern toilet there. Our bus stopped at a tourist place to go to the bathroom. All the japanese tourists had umbrellas for the heat. You can swim there. I just dont tolerate heat well. 

I'd do caverns or something cooler or see the flamingos and stuff like that if I go back. Or go in jan. You dont say when you are going. It's a excursion  for winter only imo.

We did Chichen Itza and loved it.  It's a long bus ride through the jungle to get there, but you do pass (two if I remember correctly) a couple villages and the bus slows down to let a local person board and sell stuff.  The village alone is culture shock/education.  Obviously no electricity, running water etc.  Some women still walking around topless.  Chichen Itza, I agree with firefly - if you don't like learning about history and cultural evolution it might not be exciting.  I was THRILLED.

(edit: just as I saved this I remembered, we actually did Chichen Itza from Cancun, not Progreso, sorry)

We did the Chichen Itza and cenote swim in August. It was a great excursion and I would recommend it especially if you don't have kids. It is a long bus ride(1.5-2 hours) each way. The ruins were very crowded but an experience to see.(Progresso is not the greatest port). The cenote was 15 or 20 minutes but the food was good, and the scenery was beautiful. It too was crowded and more touristy and not really a nature experience. We had a great time and thought it was worth the money. 

Back in 2019, we did an AI, a Carnival excursion, and we loved it. We almost took the Merida tour, then  Chichen Itza, but decided the tour bus to both places took up most of the day. This is a very nice place we stayed at. Here are a few pics:

Years ago we did an excursion that was a scenic bike ride to a cenote, then lunch, then rode bikes back. It was quite a long bus ride there but it was a fun and doable excursion for us as we were in our late 50s and hadn't rode bikes since we were kids lol. The cenote was cool but had many, many narrow, slippery steps to get down there.  Not sure if it's still offered since it's not on your list.

I recommend the Chichen Itza, Cenote & Buffet.  I did a similar independent tour and loved it. Chichen Itza is amazing to see with lots of history given of the site, activities and lifestyle. The Cenote is very good as well. It’s a long day, but worth it.

I have been to Chichen Itza multiple times. It is an amazing archaeological site to visit, and is listed as one of the seven (new) wonders of the world.  However, many of the structures are now somewhat off limits to tourists (no more climbing the main temple (El Castillo), and inner tours are by reservation), much of the jungle has been cleared away for tourist paths, etc., but it is still a great place to visit to learn more about the ancient Maya civilization and their astronomical expertise. There is a lot to see.

The tour will be hot,  and involve a bit of walking, so hopefully the cenote swim is afterwards.  Usually there are steps walking down or for the more adventurous, you can jump or rappel.  I do wear water wings, because I am a bit nervous in cenotes.  The water was cool and refreshing.

River tubing and Mayapan is a similar tour, although the site is not as large. Snorkeling and cavern swim is more or less the same as the cenote.  My DH has gone cave scuba diving there, and they traveled underwater for a bit of a distance under the limestone surface.

The other two tours are mainly just swimming, so if you do not wish to tour an ancient Maya site, you may find those more to your preference.  When I travel to Mexico, my priority is to always visit archaeological sites.

It is offered, but I am terrible on a bike.  I didn't learn to ride a bike until I was an adult and am still not very good at it.

I agree. Chichen Itza or Meridia. If I ever decide to book a cruise that stops in Progresso, we will definitely do one of these two. Probably Chichen Itza.

Best Things to Do in Progreso, Mexico on a Cruise

Many cruise passengers who’ve come to Progreso frequently have claimed that it’s becoming a “home away from home” for them whenever they’re on vacation.

With various restaurants, duty-free shopping, ancient Mayan ruins, underground caves, and the beach, there’s truly something in Progreso for everyone to enjoy. While other Mexican ports tend to Americanize things for the tourists, at Progreso you’ll be able to get the full Mexican experience.

Food & Drink

Experiencing the cuisine and foods of other cultures is one of the best parts about going on a Caribbean cruise, and Progreso is not going to leave you hungry for very long.

The main street along the beach, called Progreso’s Malecon, features many restaurants that give you a fantastic view of the beach, and many even allow you to sit on the beach with your meal, either under the palapas (a traditional Mexican shelter using palm leaves or branches) or rent some lounge chairs.

It’s important to note that none of the restaurants in Progreso allow smoking, and on Sundays no alcohol is served before 12:30pm.

With that in mind, let’s dig in and look at some of the fabulous dining options you can find in Progreso, either on the Malecon, or in downtown.

Restaurants on the Malecon

Los henequenes.

This open-air bar and restaurant is located right on the main boulevard with access to the beach. They serve sea-food of all types, but the favorite of most customers is the lobster. Prices can be a little high, but if you pay with pesos rather than American dollars, it’ll be cheaper.

On top of great food, they also have awesome service. Many travelers have reported how attentive their servers were each time they went to the restaurant.

Vina Del Mar Restaurant

Vina Del Mar is one of the best upscale restaurants on the Malecon, often hosting receptions, birthdays, or anniversaries. It’s not just travelers and tourists who love dining here, it gets plenty busy with locals as well. They offer both seafood and some Italian options on their menu, but everything is delicious, and the service is amazing.

Milk Bar may sell seafood, but they’re most known for their burgers and sandwiches, which can be a nice change for someone who doesn’t like seafood or is allergic. They also have plenty of vegan and vegetarian options on their menu. They are the #3 rated restaurant on TripAdvisor, and customers love their friendly staff and versatile menu options.

If you’re a fan of The Simpsons, you’ll love Moe’s Bar. It’s not only modeled after the popular show, but it features artwork and statues of the characters as well.

This is one of the few places in Progreso that’s open late, so if you enjoy a little bit of nightlife experience, this is the place to go.

Maya Ka is probably one of the most unique restaurants you’ll find on the Malecon. Fresh seafood, tasty drinks, and a pool right in the middle of the outdoor seating area, so guests can cool off with a brief swim while waiting for their meal.

Also, the seating area is sheltered in the shadows of a Mayan temple replica, adding to the restaurant’s atmosphere. Many travelers cited Maya Ka as their favorite restaurant whenever they visit.

With a full seafood menu and the best margaritas on the Malecon (according to other travelers), Restaurante Shark also provide the largest outdoor seating area under a huge palapa. Service is attentive and friendly, and you get a great view of the ocean while you eat.

Le Saint Bonnet

Le Saint Bonnet services delicious breakfast foods, as well as lunch and dinner. Located right on the beach their service is top notch. Slightly higher scale than some of the other restaurants around, but without the stuffy attitude. You can also stop in here later in the evening for a round of margaritas on the beach.

El Pulpo Loco – “The Crazy Octopus”

Known most by the crazy looking octopus statue out front, which is where this restaurant gets its name, this is a great place to stop for lunch. They offer indoor two level seating, but you can also get a seat on the beach and order your food there. With a friendly, laid back staff, you can just hang out and relax there.

If you really want an upscale dining experience while visiting Progreso, then Crabster will be just right for you. Waiters wear white shirts, use cloth napkins, and the restaurant just has a beautiful atmosphere overall.

Choose from a full seafood menu, as well as some delicious dessert options (their Pecan Pie is to die for!). While dining and enjoying their great service, you get a nice view of the Gulf and the cruise ship you just came in on.

Carabela Restaurant

The décor inside this restaurant makes you feel like you’re sailing the high seas as a pirate looking for treasure. Meanwhile, their outdoor seating on the beach offers plenty of palapas with ample shade. The owners here are extremely friendly, and the food is good. Definitely try the fried octopus if you stop here for lunch.

This lovely restaurant is the Malecon’s newest addition. They have a large wine selection, delicious margaritas, and a delicious menu. Great service, and the second floor offers a great view of the beach.

La Chaya Maya

Another tasty breakfast spot, La Chaya Maya offers unique flavors that you won’t get anywhere else for breakfast.

Attractions & Excursions

Getting a true Mexican experience is not just all about food. You have to learn about the history and explore the geography that makes Mexico so unique. The best way to do that is to tour the island and visit various historical sites and ruins, or anything that let’s you experience what the island has to offer.

Even if you don’t stop anywhere to eat, walking up and down the Malecon is great if you just need to stretch your legs. There’s also a lot of shops to stop at now and then so you can bring home some authentic Mexican souvenirs.

Progreso Craft Market

When you step off your boat and head towards the shuttle that will take you into the city, you’ll walk right through the Progreso Craft Market. Hundreds of vendors selling various wares will be there.

Most popular here are the hammocks, made from cactus fiber, as well as high quality jewelry.

It will also be very crowded as other passengers will be disembarking, so keep that in mind while you’re browsing. If crowds aren’t your thing, we suggest moving on to something else and then coming back to the market when there isn’t as much foot traffic.

Progreso Beach

What is a port city in Mexico without beaches? Well, Progreso really only has one beach, but there is plenty of things to do on the beach, whatever your preferences are.

You can rent jet skis, kayaks, go kiteboarding, deep sea fishing, diving, and so much more. There are also a number of tents scattered along the beach, especially on cruise ship days, offering travelers massages at various rates.

Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is not only the largest Mayan ruins to visit in the Yucatan, it’s the most popular and is listed as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World by archaeologists. It’s located a good 2 hours away from Progreso, so you’ll need to secure some sort of transportation to get there or book a tour.

They feature the 100-foot tall Kukulcan pyramid. The 365 steps leading to the top represents the 365 days of the Mayan Calendar.

You can also visit the largest ball court in Mesoamerica which used to hold very cutthroat ball games. And when we say “cutthroat”, we mean that losers were often sacrificed to the Mayan gods, right on the ball field.

Given the distance from Progreso, plan to be at Chichen Itza all day, so you’ll want to plan accordingly by bringing plenty of snacks. There’s also a night show at night that you can’t miss.

As the most popular ruins to visit, it can get crowded so try to get there as early as possible, if you can. Also bring plenty of sunblock, wear hats, and bring lots of water.

Uxmal Mayan Ruins

As with Chichen Itza, Uxmal is one of the closest ruins to Progreso. In fact, with an hour and a half bus ride, it’s a lot closer than Itza. Not as many people visit Uxmal, so it won’t be as crowded as some of the other ruins in the area.

Uxmal features some of the most beautiful architecture, so you can take your time to ogle at the facades, terraces, plazas, and pyramids, some of which go all the way back to 200 and 900 AD.

Dzibilchaltun Mayan Ruins

Book an excursion to the Dzibilchaltun ruin, a ceremonial site where the Mayan astronomical and architectural advances are on display. This ruin is the closest one to the port, so if you don’t have a full day to spend it’s a great spot to visit and enjoy and learn some of the Mayan culture.

Visit the temple of the seven dolls and go for a swim in the Xcalah Cenote, right in the center of the ruins (more on Cenotes below).

Any of the ruins near Progreso can be visited by booking a tour excursion through your cruise line.

If you’d rather not go swimming in the ocean which is full of seawater, sand, the hot sun, and various sea creatures, instead visit any one of the natural swimming pools found all over Mexico. These are called Cenotes (pronounced see-no-tay). They’re massive limestone sinkholes that get filled with cool, clear water from the underground river.

There are well over 6,000 cenotes in the Yucatan, and the Mayans considered them as entrances to the underworld.

If you want to beat the heat of Mexico, this is the best way to do so. The water is rich with minerals and visiting at least once during your stay is a must. Some of the Mayan ruin tours include cenotes as tour stops, or you can take your own tour around to various cenotes and spend the day swimming I the coolest, clearest water you’ve ever seen.

Merida is the capital of the Yucatan Peninsula, and it neighbors Progreso. In fact, Merida is just a short 20-minute bus ride away and is also filled with various attractions and Mayan ruins to visit.

In Merida, known as The White City because of its white, limestone buildings, you’ll experience a unique mix of Mayan culture and colonial history. Festivals are held every year, so if you want to experience music, literature, and art like you never have before, be sure to join in.

Mangrove Kayaking

Go on a kayaking tour around the island where you get a close up view of the local flora and fauna, including sightings of some of the tropical birds that live in Mexico. The entrance to the mangroves is located in Ria, and the tour takes about three and a half hours.

This is a memorable experience you simply can’t miss while you’re in Progreso. Since it’s a short tour, you’ll have plenty of time to stop over at a restaurant for lunch afterwards, and then find something else to do.

While Merida is known as the “White City” because of its limestone buildings, Izmal Town, just 40 miles east of Merida, is called The Yellow City. Houses here are all painted yellow and are located amongst many hills that many believe to be covering undiscovered Mayan temples.

This is great town to do some extra sightseeing in after visiting Merida. Anyone with a passion for archaeology and architecture will love visiting here. Tour guides on your excursion will inform you about Izmal’s history and culture.

As with many excursions with big tour companies, this one will cost a pretty penny (roughly $100 per person), but some of the taxi drivers in the area might have better deals.

Celestun Biosphere

About an hour and a half south of Merida is Celestun which is a small, quiet and beautiful town in Yucatan. This is also the location of the flamingo and bird sanctuary.

The best way to get here is by taxi and be sure to bring a guide with you. The guide will not only fill you in on the history of Celestun but can tell you all the best places to visit in the town.

Take a boat ride to the lagoon filled with flamingos, swim in more freshwater cenotes, or visit the large pink salt Salinas. You can also take home large salt particles as a souvenir.

El Jaguar Golf Course

Perhaps sightseeing and architecture aren’t your thing. If that’s so, go check out the El Jaguar golf course over at the Yucatan Country Club. If you happen to be a golf enthusiast, or just want a relaxing but challenging way to stretch your legs, play a game or two on the 18-hole, Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course.

This is great for all skill levels of golfers. When Jack Nicklaus designed the course, he took into account the landscape full of natural cenotes, archaeological remnants, and built a course that factored those in without disrupting them. While you play your game, you’ll still be able to enjoy the full cultural experience.

Beginners and pros alike will enjoy playing here during their stay in Progreso.

Progreso, Mexico is a lovely port of call and a great place to really immerse yourself in the Mexican culture. It’s also known for various Mayan ruins where you can witness some of the amazing Mayan architecture, while also learning about their culture, ceremonies, and rituals commonly held.

Be sure to bring your appetite with you to Progreso, because there are plenty of restaurants to visit. So many, you’re going to have a hard time deciding where to eat.

Shopaholics will also love it here, as there is plenty of shopping available just as you get of the ship, and in the town of Progreso itself. All shops are duty free, but it is recommended that you shop (and dine) using pesos rather than American dollars, because everything will be much cheaper that way.

Or, if you just want to relax during your shore excursion, talk a walk along the beach, rent a beach chair, or go swimming in one of the many cenotes all around the island.

Carnival reveals plans for unusual new Panama Canal cruises

Cruise giant Carnival is about to add a new routing to its lineup of Panama Canal cruises — one that no line has ever offered before.

Scheduled to kick off in 2026, the one-way sailings through the iconic waterway will begin in Mobile, Alabama, and end in Seattle, or vice versa.

It'll be the first time that Carnival or any other line has offered sailings connecting the two cities, which are both cruise hubs.

For now, Carnival plans just two voyages on the new routing, both on the 2,124-passenger Carnival Spirit.

Both of the sailings will be just over two weeks long — far longer than most Carnival sailings. The first of the two voyages will start April 12, 2026, in Mobile and end 16 days later in Seattle. The second of the voyages will begin Oct. 8, 2026, in Seattle and end 16 days later in Mobile.

In addition to a transit through the Panama Canal, both of the sailings will include stops at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; and Cartagena, Colombia.

The voyages will take place as Carnival Spirit temporarily repositions from Mobile to Seattle for a summer season of cruises to Alaska .

Carnival Spirit is one of two ships that Carnival plans to deploy to Seattle in 2026 for sailings to Alaska.

Carnival this week said the 2,124-passenger Carnival Miracle will also sail to Alaska out of Seattle in 2026.

Carnival Miracle will reposition to Seattle for the 2026 Alaska season from Tampa with a 16-day repositioning cruise through the Panama Canal. As is the case with Carnival Spirit's Panama Canal itineraries, it'll feature stops at Cabo San Lucas, Puntarenas and Cartagena.

After a summer of sailings to Alaska out of Seattle, Carnival Miracle will reposition to Galveston, Texas, with another 16-day cruise through the Panama Canal that stops at Cabo San Lucas, Puntarenas and Cartagena.

The latter trip will begin in Seattle on Sept. 26, 2026.

When based in Seattle, Carnival Miracle will mostly sail seven-day Alaska sailings that depart every Thursday. They'll bring visits to Tracy Arm Fjord for glacier viewing and the Alaskan towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. There also will be a stop at Victoria in British Columbia.

Additionally, Carnival Miracle will offer two longer Alaska sailings: a nine-day trip that adds a visit to Sitka, Alaska, and a 10-day trip that adds a stop at Icy Strait Point, Alaska.

Carnival Spirit will offer a similar seven-night itinerary to Alaska as Carnival Miracle when based in Seattle.

Carnival Spirit also will operate a single 15-day voyage out of Seattle to Hawaii. Beginning Sept. 23, 2026, the voyage will bring calls at Honolulu on Oahu, Nawiliwili on Kauai, Kahului on Maui and Hilo on Hawaii Island, as well as a visit to Victoria, British Columbia.
