Last week, Billboard revealed its year-end Boxscore charts , ranking the top tours, venues, and promoters of 2023. That coverage included analysis of the new wave of genre diverse artists crashing stadium stages, and in turn, our charts. Here, we are breaking down the year’s biggest tours, genre by genre . Today, we continue with comedy.
Comedy is an outlier as a Boxscore genre, as it obviously exists outside of the traditional music industry. That’s not to say that the two don’t intersect – Adam Sandler has been a highly influential in musical comedy since the 1990s – but generally, comedians are playing a different game than Taylor Swift or Beyoncé . Most recently, Bo Burnham ’s genre- and form-blending Inside hit No. 7 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and has logged 125 weeks (to date) at No. 1 on Comedy Albums .
With smaller traveling production, touring comedians have simpler stage setups. That can allow them to float from theaters to arenas and from amphitheaters to clubs from night to night. They can also perform multiple shows per night without the physical and vocal tolls of headlining pop stars. Two of 2023’s top 10 comedians played more than 100 shows during the tracking period, which no other act in the entire all-genre top 100 did.
Comedy’s share of the top 100 tours’ overall gross dipped to 1.8% this year. In part, astronomically rising ticket prices for stadium acts are creating a bigger gap between the biggest touring musicians and comedians who have stayed closer to more conservative pre-pandemic prices. Routing is also key – John Mulaney , Sebastian Maniscalco and Hasan Minhaj had much lighter schedules than in 2022.
Scroll to check out the top 10 highest grossing tours by comedy performers, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. All reported shows worldwide between Nov. 1, 2022 – Sept. 30, 2023, are eligible.
$13.4M / 198K tickets / 20 shows
All-Genre Top 100 Rank: N/A
Jo Koy played a variety of theaters and arenas in the U.S., mostly promoted by Icon Concerts. He did best on the West Coast, with his six best grosses coming from California, Nevada and Washington.
Adam Sandler
$14.2M / 141K tickets / 15 shows
From the global film box office to Billboard Boxscore, Sandler remains one of the most bankable names in comedy. Austin, Dallas and Nashville were highlights on his 2022-23 tour, which continues into next year.
Sebastian Maniscalco
$16.8M / 130K tickets / 39 shows
Maniscalco has been a road warrior over the last decade, but found a home in Vegas. He played 16 shows at the Encore Theater at Wynn Resort, making up almost $3 million of his year-end total. Casinos in New Jersey, Florida and California add to his run.
Taylor Tomlinson
$17.5M / 296K tickets / 132 shows
Tomlinson played more shows than any artist on any of the 2023 Boxscore genre breakdowns. Often with multiple shows per night, she ranged from $1 million over two nights at Radio City Music Hall to $25k and 740 tickets in Brussels.
$20.5M / 276K tickets / 21 shows
Kay hits the middle of the top 10, almost exclusively from shows in England. He repeated throughout the year in major markets such as Manchester, Glasgow and especially in London – in all, he played 10 shows at the O2 Arena during the 2023 tracking period.
Nate Bargatze
$20.6M / 330K tickets / 113 shows
More than 100 shows between November 2022 and September 2023 led to Bargatze’s first hosting gig on NBC’s Saturday Night Live . The Tennessee native played shows in Chattanooga, Johnson City, Memphis and Nashville, plus more than 60 others during the year.
$20.6M / 231K tickets / 37 shows
A mix of theaters, arenas and casinos scored Burr his second consecutive year at No. 4 on the comedy breakdown. He peaked at $1.5 million on July 7-8 at the Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena in Atlantic City, N.J.
Bert Kreischer
$32.9M / 460K tickets / 80 shows
All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 82
A scan of Kreischer’s top markets of 2023 doesn’t find New York or Los Angeles or Chicago or any other typically major market. His strongest showings were in Tempe, Ariz.; Gilford, N.H.; Tampa, Fla. and St. Louis, Mo.
Dave Chappelle
$36.6M / 254K tickets / 19 shows
All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 68
Chappelle made lemonade out of very few lemons, playing fewer shows than anyone in the top 10 other than Sandler. He did it by sticking to arenas exclusively, only dipping below 10,000 tickets at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, Calif. (9,862). Four shows at Madison Square Garden earned $7.9 million and moved 49,000 tickets.
$67.5M / 631K tickets / 82 shows
All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 29
Yet again, Kevin Hart takes the lead, making him the only act to repeat atop a Boxscore genre chart in 2023. Hart played as many shows as Kreischer and demanded high ticket prices like Chappelle and Sandler, amounting to an 84% lead over his closest competition. In all, he reported 27 engagements with more than 10,000 tickets sold, and 30 over the $1 million mark.

Coming soon to a theater near you: some of the funniest comedians working today. A number of major stars are heading on comedy tours this fall, including one who's doing so for the first time in years and another who's touring for the first time period. These are the comedy tours you won’t want to miss in the coming months.
Is 2023 the year of the Tuckeraissance? After appearing in his first movie in years (Ben Affleck's "Air"), Chris Tucker announced what Live Nation noted was the comic’s first major North American tour in over a decade. His "The Legend Tour" is heading to 30 cities this fall and recently kicked off in Charleston, South Carolina. "I started my career doing stand-up in comedy clubs and it's stand-up comedy that prepared me for all of my movie roles," Tucker said. "I'm looking forward to getting back to my roots." The tour will run through Jan. 12.
He's here, he's there, he's everywhere, including a theater near you this fall. Emmy-winning "Ted Lasso" star Brett Goldstein is embarking on his very first stand-up tour . The actor's "The Second Best Night of Your Life Tour" will be in Denver on Oct. 5 before moving to Boston, Minneapolis, and more cities into December. Place your bets on how many words he gets out before dropping his first F-bomb.

You're sure to have a good trip to see Eric André on tour this fall. The star of "The Eric Andre Show" is traveling the country on his "Eric André Explosion Tour," which recently kicked off in Los Angeles. He has a ton of upcoming dates scheduled, including in Kansas City, Chicago, Dallas, and Detroit. "Bring your ranch, your nightmares, and all your friends," the comedian said .
You can catch the popular British comedian Eddie Izzard on her " Remix Tour ," which has shows scheduled throughout the fall in the U.S. and heads to the U.K. in November. "I will be remixing the stand-up that I like the most from the first 35 years of my career," Izzard explained .
Make it a very Hubie Halloween season with Adam Sandler. The comedian recently announced a fall tour he’s calling the "I Missed You Tour," which will stop by 25 cities. "Let's have some fun," he posted on Instagram . He's kicking off the tour on Oct. 12 in Vancouver before heading to Seattle, Portland, Nampa, Spokane, and more locations around the country into December. Get ready for more than 20 crazy nights.
Sometimes two comedians are better than one, so Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Gaffigan are heading on tour together. "Jim and I met doing 'Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee' and have been talking about doing this for years," Seinfeld said . "We finally made the schedules work out." Gaffigan, meanwhile, joked he's "so excited to help out this unknown up and upcoming comedian who many may have never heard of." After November shows in San Francisco and Inglewood, the pair will also head to Chicago and St. Louis.
Speaking of comedy duos, you can't get much better than Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who announced their first-ever comedy tour together in February. Their "Restless Leg Tour" is continuing into the fall with shows scheduled for Cleveland, Denver, Austin, and more cities into December.
Have you seen Chelsea lately? If not, check out the schedule for her ongoing " Little Big Bitch Tour ," which has shows set throughout the fall in New York, California, and plenty of cities in between.
A certain tall child is also headed on tour this fall with some good friends. John Mulaney will be performing shows with his friend Pete Davidson, who has his own solo tour dates scheduled as well, in October and November. But for some shows, Mulaney’s “John & Pete” show will be “Jon & John,” as Mulaney has a few performances scheduled with former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart in New York and California. How’s that for a deal: two Jo(h)ns for the price of one?

The Lonely Island
Tenacious d, "weird al" yankovic, flight of the conchords, adam sandler, top rated comedians.
Dive into some of the best reviewed comedians on Songkick. Find out what makes their performances so awesome.
There is no one quite as hilarious to see live as Weird Al Yancovic. He will be sure to keep you rolling on the floor with laughter with his parody songs and crazy theatrical stage antics. Weird Al is a fun performer for all generations to see. He will keep the older audiences laughing with his renditions of Michael Jackson parodies such as “Fat” and “Eat It”, and he will keep the younger generations entertained with his side splitting hilarious parody of Pharrell Williams’ song, “Happy”, which is titled “Tacky”. Even though Weird Al recycles the same kind of formula in his parodies, his music is always relevant due to his keen observations on current pop culture, and the wacky absurdities of his songs, no matter how nonsensical they might be, can only make one laugh. His newer albums even contain songs that make references to older styles of music that will please his fans that don’t keep up with recent pop radio. His newest album contains a song in the musical style of the Pixies, and his previous album had a song in the musical style of The Doors labeled “Craigslist”. During his performances Weird Al is known to play on his accordion, an instrument that he is quite talented at playing. His accordion is heavily featured on various songs including “Angry White Boy Polka”, which is a song consisting of a medley of different parodies. He has also been known to perform on other outlandish instruments such as a keytar, when playing parodies of 80’s music. Weird Al always dresses appropriately and obnoxiously for each song he is parodying. When performing the song “Fat” you will see him perform the song in a fat suit, and in the song “White and Nerdy” you will see him dressed in nerdy, gangster attire. Weird Al is sure to perform his old and new material that will please all of his fans, and every word that comes out of his mouth is ensured to be presented in a way that will keep the audience laughing out of their seats.
If there was any one musical genre that was in genuine need of a shake-up, particularly in the form of some fresh blood, it was comedy; a landscape that had been dominated for years by an increasingly-irrelevant ‘Weird’ Al Yankovic was clearly crying out for an injection of youthful vigour. Enter, then, The Lonely Island, who built up a loyal following through numerous appearances on Saturday Night Live in America - most prominently with ‘Dick in a Box’ - before making inroads into the music business proper right around the time that YouTube was genuinely taking off - it’s hard to think of an act who were more ripe for its potential for viral videos. Since, they’ve had a string of genuine smashes on the website, with ‘I Just Had Sex’, ‘Jizz in My Pants’, ‘Jack Sparrow’ and ‘Like a Boss’ all chalking up nine-figure view counts over the past few years. Granted, those titles should be something of a giveaway to the fact that perhaps the trio aren’t for those with the most sophisticated of tastes, but their impressive list of guest appearances across three records - including Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga and even Michael Bolton - speaks to their popularity. They’ve yet to tour properly, with their live activity limited to television performances, but expect something suitably silly when they do; Andy Samberg hinted as recently at last year that future dates are now “just a matter of scheduling.”
Flight of the Conchords at St. Augustine Amphitheatre was absolutely hilarious. Growing up i loved Flight of the Conchords, so actually getting see them come to my hometown was an amazing experience. Brett, and Jemaine were excellent musicians, and put on a brilliant performance, dubbed in with improvisational bits here and there which really created the magic.
I usually never write reviews for anyone, but Bo deserved one. This was hands down the best show I've ever been to, and everything that he said influenced me immensely. The experience was surreal, and Bo was able to find a healthy medium between comedy and introspection. I commend him on everything he did, and I hope with all of my might he returns to Las Vegas again.
Boy was it my lucky day this past weekend! It was my birthday and my friends surprised me with tickets to go see Adam Sandler play live. Which was quite surprising because he is comedian, but hey he is actually a pretty decent guitarist. But it his lyrical genius that really made the show. Which isn't surprising considering all of the amazing movies he has made over the years and the many Saturday Night Live skits he has been a part of. He always seems like he is enjoying himself up on stage which makes it very easy for everyone in the audience, even up in the higher balcony to get involved. Sandler always takes time between songs to joke and mess with the crowd. Going to watch him play isn't just a musical performance, it is full-on performance art. I was laughing and dancing around the whole entire time. His music style is very heavy rock and roll with very funny lyrics thrown on top. Later on in the show Chris Farley even showed up on stage and danced threw himself around on the ground, smashing a hula hoop on the stage. This was probably one of the greatest nights of my life.
Stand up comedy is usually not my cup of tea. I always feel awkward when watching comics make jokes that are just not funny at all. Dane Cook, though, is one of the very few exceptions. He is probably one of the most popular comics in the world. I remember in high school, just a few years ago, he was constantly talked about in class. Even my teachers knew about him. So when 2 of my friends and I found out he was going to be performing very close to us, we all decided that we had to try and get tickets. We knew it would be tough, considering how popular he was, but we were lucky and bought 3 of the last tickets available. The seats weren't that great, but it didn't really matter to us. The crowd was absolutely HUGE, loud, energetic, and downright giddy. There was almost constant laughter. Dane would say something that made at least 3/4 of the crowd laugh at least every 5 or 6 seconds. He was wearing his usual outfit that we all see him wear on Comedy Central, a pair of jeans and a T shirt. Anyone who watches Dane knows he is a very hyperactive performer, constantly moving around the stage, constantly changing the tone of his voice, switching from screaming to whispering, whatever. He is definitely one of the funniest dudes alive and we had a great time. Everyone there seemed to have a great time. My favorite bit from him was his one night stand bit, hands down. Hilarious. Great show!
