Serene countryside.
England’s countryside ranges from the rolling soft greens of the south to the mountains and rugged shorelines of North Wales. From Dover, you can’t miss the famous, chalky White Cliffs. If you have time in Southampton before or after your cruise, head out to the New Forest, a wooded National Park, known for its wild ponies.
Cosmopolitan Cities

Soccer followers won’t be disappointed, either; Liverpool F.C, and rivals Manchester United and Manchester City are all based in the north, with stadium tours on offer.
Centuries of History
History dates back thousands of years in England. Visit the neolithic stone circle of Stonehenge, established an astonishing 5,000 years ago. Fast forward to London and the often grisly history associated with the famous Tower of London, or admire graceful Canterbury Cathedral, all gothic spires and soaring interiors, on a day trip from Dover. Discover the serene old city of Winchester from Southampton, or wander around Roman-built Chester, all half-timbered houses and cobbled streets.

More About London
From treasured landmarks to sipping afternoon tea, there is something for everyone in London. Enjoy panoramic views from Tower Bridge and visit the nearby Tower of London, with its rich history and the crown jewels of England. Speaking of royalty, catch the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, the residence of the reigning monarchs.
In central London, enjoy Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery, the British Museum, and St. Paul’s Cathedral. London also has a splendid array of markets to explore, like Covent Garden or Portobello Road on Notting Hill. And for evening entertainment, enjoy world-renowned theaters and lively clubs in London’s West End. With all this and more, the historic and vibrant European capital of London is an absolute must-see.

The heaviest tourist season runs mid-April through mid-October, with another peak around Christmas—though the tide never really ebbs. Spring is the time to see the countryside and the royal London parks and gardens at their freshest; fall to enjoy near-ideal exploring conditions. In late summer, be warned: air-conditioning is rarely found in places other than department stores, modern restaurants, hotels, and cinemas in London, and in a hot summer you'll swelter. Winter can be rather dismal, but all the theatres, concerts, and exhibitions go full speed.
It's virtually impossible to forecast London weather, but you can be fairly certain that it will not be what you expect. It's generally mild—with some savage exceptions, especially in summer. In short, be prepared for anything: layers and an umbrella are your friends.

All Eyes on London: Sightseeing in London During a Day Trip
Like all the great cities of the world sightseeing in London has something to offer each and every visitor. While it would take a lifetime to see and do everything the city is renowned for, a London day trip as part of a European cruise is just enough time to take in some of London's most famous sights.
Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace, in all its splendor, is one of the world's few remaining fully functioning royal palaces. Some of the palace serves as the official London residence of British sovereignty, but the marvelous State Rooms — where The Queen and Royal Family gather to receive their guests — are open to the public as part of a tour of the palace. On your way in or out, or if you're simply strolling by, witness the timeless Changing of the Guard ceremony — a living reminder of the rich traditions of England. Book a city drive excursion that includes a stop at Buckingham Palace.
The most recent addition to the list of London's must-see sights is the London Eye. Open since 2000, the London Eye — then known as the Millennium Wheel — is perched on the gorgeous South Bank of the Thames. The stunning view from the top offers visitors a chance to take in the entire city. From the spire of the Shard to the hands of Big Ben, urban gazers are reminded of why London has remained among the world's premiere cities for centuries.
Tower of London
Once a sight of grim repute, a visit to the Tower of London now provides an excellent opportunity to brush up on history while taking a European cruise. Over the Tower's 900-year history it has served as a royal palace, armory, and even a zoo. Visitors can even behold the Royal Family's priceless Crown Jewels, which remain powerful symbols of the Monarchy.
Since it was completed over 150 years ago, Big Ben has been a cultural icon. From the classic movie "Peter Pan" to songs by The Who, it has been portrayed in movies, television, books, and songs, and has come to quintessentially represent London in the hearts and minds of people the world over. Whether just stopping by for a picture or hearing the bells in the distance while walking along the Thames, Big Ben can't be missed.
British Museum
Sometimes the best things in life truly are free. Like the Smithsonian in Washington DC, the British Museum doesn't charge an admission fee. This opulent building exhibits works stretching from some of man's most ancient creations to modern marvels and everything in between. Must-see exhibits from the permanent collection include the Rosetta Stone, Parthenon sculptures, Samurai armor, and the Easter Island statue Hoa Hakananai'a.

How To Plan One Of The Best London Day Trips Ever
Find ideal things to do while on vacation in london.
By Claire Heginbotham | Published on July 20, 2022
What To Do When You're New To London?
I ’d love to give you an insider's secret travel tip as the most well-known attractions in London are bucket-list experiences you would not want to miss. If you are planning a day trip in the UK that is more popular with tourists, then the best advice is to book tickets in advance. Standing in queues can seriously slow you down, and nothing is worse than having tickets sell out on you. Transport in London can be costly, which leaves most vacation travelers to choose to take the tube (London's subway) or a bus. A day ticket for all public transport is the most affordable option if you plan to hop from spot to spot. Alternatively, you can travel in style using one of London's famous black taxi cabs.
All the best London day trips start at the regal Buckingham Palace. Buckingham is still a working palace and is home to the queen when she isn't traveling. It's a stately building that's practically dripping with the glamour of the royal family.
There are a few things to do when you visit Buckingham Palace. First, check out the main gate, where most of the crowds gather to take in the entire facade of the rectangular building. While outside, time your visit right to catch the changing of the guard. This is one of the showiest and most notable shift changes ever. It's held at 10:45 a.m. every day and lasts roughly 45 minutes.
Then, make your way inside the palace with a private tour. Tours are only conducted in summer (July to October) and cost around £55 (roughly $70) per person. They include the staterooms where important dignitaries are received and can be extended to other palace areas, including the gardens.
Before I went to London, I thought Ferris wheels were pretty lame, but the London Eye changed my mind at first sight. The London Eye is just under 500 feet tall and is a genius feat of human engineering. It was constructed in 2002 and remains one of the biggest Ferris wheels in the world. You can grab a combined sightseeing ticket for the London Eye that gives you access to a hop-on-hop-off bus for 24 hours and a river cruise down the Thames. If you've got other day plans, I highly recommend booking a priority ticket in advance (about £10 or $13 more expensive than the regular ticket) to avoid the wait.
Despite being a much-loved tourist hot spot, the London Eye isn't the tallest building; "The Shard" holds that title, towering above the hustle and bustle at over 1,000 ft high. From the 69th-floor viewing platform, you'll get an unparalleled 40-mile, 360-degree view over London city. The Shard also hosts silent discos at night if you want to indulge in a big-city party.
To finish off the day, there are two shops you simply must see when you visit London: the toy store Hamleys and the luxury department store Harrods.
Harrods is the largest department store in Europe and is packed full of designer clothes, fine jewelry, gourmet food and 297 other departments! Even if you don't like shopping, it's an experience that you're sure to find fascinating (even if it's just to gasp at the prices). While Hamleys is by no means a luxury store, it's just as large. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Hamleys is the oldest and largest shop in the world. Trust me, wandering around the seven themed floors filled with toys is something that sparks joy in adults and children alike.
Experience The Best Kind Of Culture Shock On Your London Day Tour
Simply wandering around the older parts of London will give you a glimpse into what London was like in the 1700s. A walking tour of the city is well worth the physical effort, especially for history buffs. A particularly fond memory I have of one such tour is taking photos while nestled between the giant bronze arms of the four Trafalgar Square lions. Little did I know at the time, but the very bronze I was touching has a story. The lions honor Sir Nelson's wartime victory and were made from the melted cannons of defeated Spanish and French ships.
Continuing your architecture tour, visit Westminster Abbey — a stunning gothic church where royal coronations take place. This Abbey is open for worship and tourists, and it also happens to house the royal tombs of 16 kings and queens. In comparison, Canterbury Cathedral has only one king.
To complete your historical education, spend your evening at the Globe Theatre — now known as Shakespeare's Globe — where you can see one of Shakespeare's famous plays and take a step back in time. The entire structure is almost an exact replica of the original Globe, which burned down in 1613. If you're not visiting in the summer months when they hold plays, you can still tour the beautiful building.
London's museums are a sight to behold, all 170 of them! Many of these museums are leading research institutions, packed with world-class displays of art, design, fashion, architecture and archaeology. Some are so large that it would be impossible to visit all the collections in a short amount of time, so take an easy day trip to just one museum, or try your luck at combining a few of the major players into one day. Art-enthusiasts will love the British Museum, while the science minds won't want to leave the Science Museum, which includes a cross-section of an actual Boeing plane and a 1965 soviet supercomputer. Likewise, animal lovers will find the Horniman Museum and Gardens charming with real live alpacas roaming the grounds alongside butterflies, goats, sheep, rabbits and even chickens.
How To End A Great Day Trip With Good Vibes?
For a change of pace, I recommend you dip a toe into the twisty, whimsical district of Soho. Once home to Mozart, Karl Marx and even the Sex Pistols, Soho proves Bohemia is still alive. If you only have an hour in Soho, pop over to a pub called the French House for a pint of British beer — or rather half a pint, as this spot has famously only sold half-pints to customers.
If you're looking to let loose, the energy of this district is palpable, and you could quickly end up drinking exotic tipples and cocktails at Barrio Soho, challenging university students to a game of beer pong over at the Book Club, or dancing on (classy) tables over at the Little Blue Door. It's worth doing a quick online search before committing to a place, as there are plenty of specials and happy hours to suit your style.
Despite its reputation as a party hub, Soho is brimming with culture and is home to some of the West End's best theatres. If you love musicals, I highly recommend catching Wicked at the Apollo theatre. The show is so popular that it's been running for almost two decades. Or, see a performance of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Palace Theatre, but beware: This play has a run-time of 5+ hours and will take up your entire afternoon and evening.
The City Fit For Foodies
Britons seem to agree on one thing: Food from other countries is way better! The whole of England is obsessed with Indian food, and you can find some of the best curry restaurants in the world in London. Almost every person you bump into in London is a curry connoisseur with a list of secret spots. You'll find curry restaurants like Michelin-starred Amaya, Bombay Bustle or Cinnamon Kitchen. Try popping in at Apollo Banana Leaf for a regular meal, and you'll get ample helpings of tasty Sri Lankan curries.
Curry aside, London has some other delectable food you have to try. Taste the soup dumplings at Ping Pong, or the Japanese and Mediterranean-inspired tapas and signature cocktails at top-rated Bloomsbury Street Kitchen. For traditional British pub food, check out Charles Dickens' old haunt, the Lamb and Flag. And if you're looking for a good meal with a side of fun, London has you covered. Fight Club is a dart club, cocktail bar, restaurant and popular brunch spot with bottomless pizza that has a fun vibe all day long. Meanwhile, Ballie Ballerson is a cocktail and pizza joint with a fun surprise: two massive ball pits waiting for you to jump in and play around. Enjoy their bottomless brunch, too.
Traveling Beyond London Day Trips
If you've exhausted your bucket list of must-do activities in London and still have time to spare, venture further out beyond London proper. Once again, you'll be faced with plenty of worthy options.
For myself, I'm one of those passionate Harry Potter fans, and my all-time favorite Hogwarts experience in the UK is the Warner Bros. studio tour, the Making of Harry Potter. It's a magical building southwest of Hertfordshire outside of London that contains film sets, props, original costumes and scale models from the movie — most notably, Diagon Alley. Tip: If you can't make it here, visit the always popular Harry Potter shop at the King’s Cross train station . You can pick up a bunch of souvenirs there and grab a memorable photo-op.
On the subject of magic, Stonehenge also makes for a fantastic day trip on your London vacation. Hop on a train for two hours, and you're suddenly in the rolling fields of Wiltshire. From the visitor center, walk around the huge rectangular boulders, wander around the neolithic houses and explore the stone circle. If you've got time, pop down to the ruins of Old Sarum — the original city of Salisbury.
Tours combine the trip to Stonehenge with Bath and the nearby Windsor Castle. Many agree that the city of Bath is one of the most picturesque and relaxing day trip ideas. The most famous spots, such as the Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths, look exactly as they did hundreds of years ago. You can't actually bathe in these waters, but the nearby Thermae Bath Spa has stunning warm pools indoors and outdoors.
Blenheim Palace in the Cotswolds is another of England's best places to go. The palace has an intriguing history but is best known for being the birthplace of Winston Churchill. You can easily spend most of the day wandering around the enormous palace grounds, feeling like a star in a period drama television show.
No matter where your feet (or London's many transportation options) take you, London is sure to impress!

The Best Tower of London Tours
© Historic Royal Palaces
Built as a fortress by William the Conqueror beginning in the 1070s, the UNESCO-listed Tower of London is one of the city's most iconic landmarks. Once a palace for monarchs, a formidable state prison and a place of execution – where three of Henry VIII's wives, including Anne Boleyn, met their end – this imposing castle conceals more than 1,000 years of history across its different towers. Visit to learn more about its gruesome tales, and to admire the Crown Jewels, where glittering state crowns and other precious treasures sit beside the world-famous Koh-i-Noor diamond.
If you're looking to explore this impressive site with the insider knowledge of a local, consider booking a tour. We've rounded up some of the top tours, all of which have at least 100 reviews and a minimum rating of 4 out of 5 stars across multiple websites.
Editor's Pick: City Wonders – Best of London: Tower of London, Thames River Ride & Changing of the Guards
U.S. News independently paid to send Laura French , an award-winning British travel writer currently based in London, on this tour to provide readers with an unbiased, first-hand perspective of what to expect. City Wonders – Best of London: Tower of London, Thames River Ride & Changing of the Guards was selected by our team as an Editor's Pick thanks to its popularity and favorable user reviews.
Price: Adults from $98; kids from $92 Duration: 4 hours
This half-day, early-morning walking tour is ideal if you want to combine the Tower of London with other key London attractions ; as a bonus, you get early access to the tower, meaning you'll enter before it officially opens to the public.
We met our guide by the tower at 8:15 a.m. and got plenty of interesting information on its history before being led through to watch the opening ceremony (available as an upgrade). A resident, red-and-navy-clad beefeater (the tower's ceremonial guards) welcomed us with entertaining anecdotes, before the chief yeoman warder and others marched through the grounds to officially open the tower. We then had around an hour to explore; it was enough time to admire the Crown Jewels and its diamond-topped crowns, royal robes and gold chalices – as well as some of the other towers, several of which were still (happily) empty pre-10 a.m.
After exploring the tower, we boarded a Thames Clipper boat from the pier around the corner, passing several London landmarks – from London Bridge to The Shard, St. Paul's Cathedral to the "walkie-talkie" skyscraper (the Fenchurch Building). From Embankment Pier, we wandered through Whitehall to Horse Guards Parade, witnessing the Changing of The King's Life Guard; crowds gathered as mounted soldiers in red and gold lined the square. After a stroll along The Mall, the tour ended at Buckingham Palace . We took in the lavish grounds from the outside and found the perfect photo spot as our guide continued to regale us with more insightful tales.
Laura French
Good to know:
- On Sundays and Mondays, a Royal Westminster Walk is offered instead of the changing of the guard.
- Prices vary by date, so play around with different options if you're flexible on when you can go.
Why we love it:
- Getting early access to the Tower of London makes a difference – I've been to the tower twice before, but this was the best experience yet. There was no line for the Crown Jewels (waiting times can get long later in the day), and the whole area felt relatively calm and uncrowded.
- It's a flexible tour, with the option to add on the opening ceremony when you book. Though it does cost extra, I recommend it if you want to experience one of London's many traditions. We learned about the history of the beefeaters and the daily Ceremony of the Keys, and were kept thoroughly entertained by the yeoman warder who greeted us.
- Our guide was humorous, entertaining and brought the tour to life, sharing facts and stories about London's past and present that I (even as a local) didn't always know about – from historic facts at the Tower of London to a garage in Whitehall that was used as the Ministry of Magic in the "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" movie.
- The tour was a good length and the group wasn't too big (we had 19 in our group), so it felt like we saw and learned a lot without being overwhelmed.

Sail to the solar eclipse: Virgin, Aurora Expeditions to offer specialty cruises in 2026
- Multiple cruise lines have announced voyages that will take guests to the path of totality in 2026.
- Aurora Expeditions guests can see the phenomenon as part of the company’s Jewels of the Arctic: Greenland Solar Eclipse Itinerary.
- Virgin Voyages will also offer eclipse cruises of its own as part of its Marvelous Voyages collection.
If seeing the total solar eclipse in 2026 is on your bucket list, cruise lines have you covered. Multiple operators have announced voyages that will take guests to the path of totality in recent weeks – along with plenty of other destinations.
Aurora Expeditions guests can see the phenomenon as part of the company’s Jewels of the Arctic: Greenland Solar Eclipse Itinerary. “Embark on an extraordinary adventure to Scoresbysund, Greenland, sailing through stunning Arctic landscapes as we position ourselves for the celestial spectacle,” the company said last week in a news release. “Feel the anticipation grow as the moon gradually eclipses the sun, casting an ethereal glow.”
Adults-only cruise line Virgin Voyages will also offer eclipse cruises of its own as part of its Marvelous Voyages collection.
When are the 2026 solar eclipse cruises?
Aurora’s solar eclipse itinerary from Oslo, Norway, to Reykjavik, Iceland, will begin on Aug. 2, 2026. The 15-day journey on the company’s Greg Mortimer ship will also explore Svalbard – where guests should keep their eyes peeled for other wild sightings like polar bears – the Denmark Strait and more.
The first of Virgin’s two cruises, Eclipse in the Land of Fire and Ice , will set sail on Aug. 5, 2026, from Portsmouth, England, aboard its Valiant Lady ship. In addition to eclipse viewing, the round-trip, 15-night sailing will stop in Dublin, Ireland; Reykjavik; and Edinburgh, Scotland, among others.
Total Eclipse of the (Med) , a 12-night cruise on Scarlet Lady, will sail from Barcelona, Spain, to Civitavecchia, Italy, starting Aug. 10 with ports including Cannes, France, Ajaccio on the island of Corsica, and Salerno on the Amalfi Coast.
The news comes after Holland America Line announced three eclipse cruises in July, including one round-trip from the U.S.
Why should I take a solar eclipse cruise?
Cruise ships not only offer expansive views of the horizon but can maneuver away from potential obstructions.
“Having the ability to map out based on what the current weather is where you can catch the eclipse, and having a range over the course of the ocean where you could chase that a little bit is certainly helpful,” Adam Burgasser, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California, San Diego, previously told USA TODAY . He served as an expert on board an April Holland America eclipse cruise.
'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship
How much do the cruises cost?
Aurora’s sailing currently starts at about $21,245 per person based on double occupancy. The fare includes a pre-cruise hotel stay, a chartered flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen, meals during the cruise and drinks like beer and wine with dinner, shore excursions and more.
Virgin’s Eclipse in the Eclipse in the Land of Fire and Ice cruise currently starts at $5,201 per person based on double occupancy, while Total Eclipse of the (Med) starts at $3,970 per person. The fares include a wide range of dining venues on board, Wi-Fi, gratuities, fitness classes and more.

Royal Caribbean cruise guide: How to have the perfect family vacation at sea
Make the most of your royal caribbean experience with this guide for families..
Known for its record-breaking cruise ships, wow-worthy entertainment, and over-the-top water parks, Royal Caribbean has been welcoming families to the high seas since 1968. I’ve sailed on a number of RCL ships, including Symphony of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas, and most recently Wonder of the Seas . With those experiences as a background, I’ve put together this guide on how to make the most of your Royal Caribbean experience when cruising with kids.
What to know about Royal Caribbean’s ships and ship classes
Royal Caribbean has multiple classes of ships, with varying options for dining and entertainment. Icon of the Seas is the biggest ship and the lead of the Icon class, home to the largest water park at sea as well as the tallest waterslide. The also-enormous Oasis class of ships includes Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas , and Wonder of the Seas .
On these ships, you can explore neighborhoods like Central Park, where you can stroll outdoors amongst foliage and eateries; and Boardwalk, with a carousel, candy store, and arcade games. Navigator of the Seas is part of the Oasis class and has escape rooms and a blow dry bar that was super fun to get glammed up at with my girl.
HOW TO CHOOSE: 12 best family cruise lines for all ages
Many families love these larger ships and their range of entertainment options. The cruise line’s smaller ships don’t typically see as many kids. So, if you’re looking for a vacation where you spend a lot of family time together, choose a smaller ship in the offseason. If you’re hoping to meet new people and have your children play at the kids clubs, choose a larger ship. Summer, spring break, and winter holiday time periods tend to have higher kid counts across the fleet as well.
Choose from a variety of cruise destinations
The Caribbean is popular for family cruises because it’s relatively close and typically sunny and warm. On Royal Caribbean, it’s also popular because you can visit Royal Caribbean’s insanely cool private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay . Royal Caribbean’s cruises to the region depart from Miami, Orlando, Texas, New Jersey, and other U.S. locations.
BEFORE YOU GO: Cruising with kids in the Caribbean? Don’t feel bad about skipping these 6 ports
If you’re considering a multigenerational cruise, consider an Alaskan cruise, suggests Erin Stransky, Senior Manager of Family Strategic Operations for Royal Caribbean. “Families can be together all day on excursions like glacier hiking and whale watching,” she says.
Europe cruises are another good option for families. Could you imagine sailing to Italy, Greece, France, Spain or Croatia? Sounds dreamy!
Things to do onboard a Royal Caribbean cruise
My absolute favorite entertainment on Royal Caribbean cruises is the jaw-dropping shows at the AquaTheater, which can only be described as high-energy and captivating. One example is inTENse, an all-female production in which aerialists dangle from high above the ship, swimmers plunge into a tiny pool, and athletes jump and dance on a slackline to the crowd’s amazement while loud music amplifies the experience.
BRING THE LITTLE ONES: Calling all babies and toddlers: These are the best cruise lines and ships for kids under 5
Stransky says she never misses an ice show. She finds it amazing that Royal Caribbean has the capability to put an ice rink on a cruise ship. My family found the costumes and caliber of the performances captivating. You can also ice skate yourselves if you book a time slot in advance.
My kids’ favorite activities have varied as they’ve gotten older, but they’ve never found themselves bored on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. My 15-year-old son became enthralled with the rock wall, seeing how many times he could ring the bell on different routes. He also thoroughly enjoyed the teen activities like dodgeball and touchdown football toss. Our 12-year-old daughter was inspired by Family Karaoke and insisted on performing any chance she could, even though she’s never sung on stage before, only because the audience was so encouraging.
During the days, we savored the pools, hot tubs, and water slides. You can also play laser tag, ride the zip line, try the surf simulator, play basketball, participate in game shows, and so much more.
IT’S ALL INCLUDED: 7 best all-inclusive cruise lines in the world
Royal Caribbean’s kids club is called Adventure Ocean, which is included for babies to age 12 and has recently been reimagined to add new technology like storybook wands for three- to five-year-olds. Six- to 12-year-olds are grouped together in an open free flow space where they can choose from games like gaga ball tournaments and crazy tag to hanging out with a book or movie. Children can have hands-on fun in a science workshop or art lab, yet not feel pressure to participate if they don’t want to.
Because teens ages 13 to 17 don’t want to be treated like kids, the teen lounge is more of a hangout hub where they can game, listen to music or meet new friends.
Choosing the right cabin for your family
On its newer ships, Royal Caribbean offers some unforgettable and luxurious accommodations like the Ultimate Family Suite, which has an in-room slide among other over-the-top touches. For those of us with more average financial resources, there are various other types of cabins and locations onboard to fit your budget and vacation style, too.
An interior stateroom is the cheapest way to go. Quad staterooms feature pullout couches and are great for families with little kids. Connecting rooms are wonderful for large families and older children, as you seek more space and privacy. (If you need a number of connecting rooms, it’s best to book as far in advance as possible.) Rooms across the hall from each are an option for families with adult children, as cruisers must be 21 or older to have their own room.
FOR OLDER KIDS: 5 cruise lines that know how to keep teenagers happy
Smaller staterooms feature showers. Junior suites or larger include bath tubs, which are often preferred by families with babies and toddlers. Family suites boast at least two bathrooms, which can make getting ready a lot faster. Icon of the Seas in particular features great staterooms for families, specifically the suites. Junior suites are decorated with a different look and feel for different age groups.
In terms of location, consider whether you’d like to be near certain features of the ship, like water slides or the teen lounge, or if your group would prefer a quieter setting. Families with mobility considerations might prefer rooms closest to the elevators.
Dining options for families on Royal Caribbean
When you think about cruising, does the seemingly endless food come to mind? With buffets, specialty dining, casual pizza, taco and hot dog places, bars and restaurants, there seems to always be something tasty to eat.
On Royal Caribbean, you can choose your own casual dining adventure at the Windjammer buffet. It serves a variety of foods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so you know even the pickiest eaters will find something to enjoy. I’m a huge fan of the Royal Caribbean muesli for breakfast, which is like overnight oats with cinnamon, apples, and orange juice. I also highly recommend the Indian food choices onboard. You can find flavorful curries and warm, chewy naan.
ANOTHER OPTION: Everything you need to know about river cruises in the U.S.
The Main Dining Room is available for more elegant brunches and dinners. It has themes from Caribbean to Italian and the same service team stays with you, becoming familiar with your family’s dining preferences. You can choose between early and late dinner times (think 5:45 p.m. vs. 7:45 p.m.). I always recommend the earlier option for families so that you can make the 8:0 p.m. shows after dinner. As my kids got older, I thought the later option might allow for more fun in the sun; but, truthfully, none of us felt like going to shows at 10:00 p.m. If you have night owls in your family, the later options might be a better fit for you.
In terms of beverages, you can choose between a Classic soda package; a Refreshment package including coffees, juices, and milkshakes; and the Deluxe beverage package with wine and cocktails.
On our most recent Royal Caribbean cruise, we enjoyed a three-restaurant Specialty Dining Package and tried Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen, Hooked Seafood, and Chops Grille steakhouse.
Giovanni’s wood-fired oven bubbled up a pizza my teen raved about. Our meal at Hooked Seafood was especially memorable because the chef cooked up a special gluten-free feast for my daughter. Surrounded by plates piled with savory shrimp and indulgent desserts, I’ve never seen her so ecstatic at a restaurant. Chops Grille was an exceptional experience from the moment we entered the swanky steakhouse. Our server spoiled us with juicy steaks, crisp wedge salads, crunchy crab cakes, and warm apple pie a la mode.
The food was so good we swore we’d eat only grilled chicken and spinach for at least a week after we got home.
