What is a "Core Charge"?

In order to understand what a core charge is, you must first understand what a core is. In the automotive industry, most products are manufactured from brand new materials. However, numerous products are also remanufactured, meaning that the manufacturer of the product takes a used product, typically removed from a vehicle, disassembles, and replaces all worn components of the master product. A great example of this is in regards to automatic transmissions in which the manufacturer takes an existing transmission, replaces all of the inner working components, such as the torque converter, valve body, etc. and merely reuses the case. Because aftermarket manufacturers require a steady stream of incoming cores to build, they charge a deposit on the core, known as a core charge, that is refunded upon receipt. In some cases, the core is not reusable, such as in the event of a cracked case, at which point the core deposit would not be credited as the core component is not reusable. If you plan on returning your core you have two options. OPTION 1: You can accept it, which means you will be charged for the part AND the core at time of purchase. You still have the option to send it back, and if you do, the core will be refunded back on the card used, presuming the core meets core criteria and the core is returned within 21 business days from originally receiving your order. If you have outstanding circumstances that would not allow the return to occur within 21 days, please contact us. OPTION 2 You can defer the core charge. If you defer it, you will not be charged a core at time of purchase. You will have 21 business days from the day you receive it to send it back. As long as the core is received within the 21 business days, you will not be charged. If 21 business days goes by and you do not send it back, the card on file will be charged the core amount. You still may send it back, and once received, we will issue the core amount as in store credit, pending any limitations as set forth by the manufacturer. Core deferral is limited to payment by credit card only.

What is "Core Return Shipping Cost"?

This product is remanufactured and requires that your original part being removed (core) to be returned. The return shipping charge of your core is not included in the purchase price of the item, but we offer you a flat rate charge that includes a core return shipping label as a convenience. If you would like a core return label included with your purchase, please select this option.

Please note that the flat fee is only intended for the contiguous 48 United States. If you are wanting to ship (return) this product from outside of this boundary, please contact us for a shipping quote or expect that we will contact you before processing your order for a shipping quote at which point we will charge the difference if you accept.

No, this is not just another rebuilt box like what you'll get at your local auto parts store! These steering boxes are built in Washington state and offer unmatched steering control and longevity. We have personally run several brands and have had the best results to date with the Red-Head.

IMPORTANT: Some 1999 and 2000 model-year applications will feature a 32-spline sector, whereas late models will have a 36-spline sector. Please confirm your spline count before ordering. If you have a 36 spline, this box will fit your application, however, if you have a 32 spline, it will not. We also offer a 32-spline option.

This gearbox allows you to retain the factory steering shaft, as well as the stock pitman arm. This is a major advantage, especially for those with lifted trucks with dropped pitman arms, you will not have to change your pitman arm

HYDRAULIC STEERING ASSIST PORTS OPTION: Red-Head offers a porting option for those who are either already running a hydraulic assist steering, or plan to in the future. If you choose to make this upgrade to the box (from the drop-down menu), your gearbox will come with two pre-drilled and tapped ports with plugs. For clarification, hydraulic assist is NOT something your vehicle would have come from the factory with, rather it is an upgrade that adds a hydraulic ram to the steering linkage to aid in steering. Most vehicles do NOT have this option, thus if you are unsure if you have it, you probably do not.

IMPORTANT NOTES: You have the option for us to include a pre-paid return label with the shipment for ease of returning your core. With this option, you will merely need to drop the re-packaged core with the accompanying shipping label at a FedEx drop-off. Otherwise, it will be your responsibility to supply your means of returning the core. Pre-paid return label option is only applicable to the lower 48 contiguous United States. Please contact us if you have any questions. Cores with broken shafts or cases will receive partial or no core refund.

• There is a mid-model year split in 2000, please determine whether you have the early or later model steering box before ordering by counting the splines on the shaft. The early models have 32 splines, while the late ones have a 36 splines. Thus, the Red-Head #2764 will feature 32 splines, whereas the #2764NBS will have 36.

Steering Gear Box Upgrades

Has anyone found an upgrade for the steering gear box on these model years? I have a 2001 Excursion and had the steering gear box rebuilt at maybe !40K miles. Now that I'm at 240K miles I either need to have this one rebuilt or buy a new one. I'm leaning towards buying a new one but wondered if anyone has found a steering gear box that is beefier than factory that can take more abuse. It's a 2x4 and discussed my options with my parts manager at my local dealer. It appears the Ford Excursion, up until 2004, has the same steering gear box as the F-250 through F-550 for 2x4. The 4x4 part number is different. Not sure why really but it doesn't appear to be any beefier. If one would need to be beefier I would have thought the F-550 would have had it. So the million dollar question... Has anyone found a beefier/longer lasting steering gear box for these model year Excursions/F-250...F-550? Are any of the steering gear boxes for the newer trucks, say 2005-2010, any stronger/longer lasting and if they are are they able to be retrofitted to the older model years? I believe my steering gear box wear is due to my amount of towing. I would have to estimate that 93% of my driving is towing. Moderator- My apologies as i did not mean to post this in the 6.0L 'upgrades and aftermarket' Would you please tow this to the 1999-2007 Upgrades and Aftermarket - General ?

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

The Yuri A. Gagarin State Scientific Research-and-Testing Cosmonaut Training Center is a Russian training facility responsible for training cosmonauts for their space missions. The secret Star City was built to train Soviet cosmonauts, including Yuri Gagarin, the 1st man in space. Many other famous Russian cosmonauts trained here with Gagarin: German Titov, Valentina Tereshkova, the first female cosmonaut, and Alexei Leonov, the first cosmonaut to exit the spaceship into space . The best facilities were built for them: the world’s largest centrifuge and hydro laboratory.
