It’s full steam ahead for Mexico’s newest tourism project, the Tren Maya (Maya Train) which celebrated its inaugural departure on December 15, 2023. The ambitious, multibillion-dollar project was announced in 2018 by then president-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who envisioned a rail network spanning 965 miles across five states. At the end of 2023, President López Obrador saw his project come to life as the first train left the station connecting Cancún with the city of Campeche, 300 miles to the west.
Upon completion, which is slated for February 2024, the Tren Maya will feature 34 stops across the states of Quintana Roo, Yucatán, Campeche, Tabasco, and Chiapas. For five years the train has been marketed as an efficient way to transport travelers to more remote and lesser-visited parts of Mexico and as a project that will generate jobs for Mexicans. According to López Obrador, the Tren Maya is “the most important public work in the world.” Fonatur, the national tourism fund for Mexico, projected that the railway could create hundreds of thousands of new jobs by 2030 .
But tourists are finding it challenging to get the latest information about the train, including where it runs, how to buy tickets, and what sections are currently open. Here you’ll find everything we know right now about Mexico’s new Tren Maya.
What sections of the Tren Maya are currently operating?
At press time, the route currently available is from Cancún to Campeche, with an extension onward to Palenque. The stations that the train passes through include:
- Cancún Airport
- Leona Vicario
- Chichén-Itzá
- Teya Mérida
- Hecelchakán
- San Francisco de Campeche
Eventually the loop will head back up to Cancún, connecting the following stations:
- Puerto Morelos
- Playa del Carmen
- Tulum Aeropuerto
- Felipe Carrillo Puerto
- Limones-Chacchoben
- Chetumal Aeropuerto
- Nicolás B. Konhunlich

How do I buy tickets for the Tren Maya?
Train tickets are available on the Tren Maya website . The link will take you to a form where you select your desired route—right now the only route available is Cancún to Palenque—as well as your origin and destination stations, departure date, and time. After selecting your seat, you will then be prompted to the BBVA Mexico bank page to complete the payment.
Tickets aboard the Tren Maya are not cheap. A ticket in the regular tourist class from Cancún Airport to Palenque costs 2,118 pesos (US$122, based on current conversion rates). For the upgraded Premier cabin, tickets are 3,382 pesos (US$196). The route from Cancún to Palenque, which is a little more than 500 miles, takes nine hours.
For comparison, a bus ticket aboard ADO, one of the largest private bus companies in Mexico, between Cancún and Palenque is 1,300 pesos (US$75) and can take 13 hours. To rent a car from Cancún Airport costs as little as $7 USD per day, and the drive time is roughly 10 hours.

What is the onboard experience like on the Tren Maya?
For such a steep ticket price, you may be wondering what the onboard experience is like on the Tren Maya. Upon completion, there will be three types of rail service. Each train can reach speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. The cars feature large windows for ample natural light and landscape viewing, the seats have outlets for charging devices, and the train is equipped with Wi Fi.
The regular train service is called Xiinbal, which is the standard commuter type that is good for short trips. This train, which is already in operation, has a bar car with food services. A second train geared toward culinary travelers, Janal, which will launch later, will feature a dining car that serves traditional dishes from the Mayan region. A third option, P’atal, is also in the works and is being designed for long-distance travel with features such as reclining seats and sleeper cabins.
A rendering of the forthcoming sleeper car trains
Currently Xiinbal is the only train service that is in operation and it features two classes: Tourist and Premier. The major difference is that Premier class has 2-1 seat configuration, while Tourist Class has a 2-2 seat configuration.
A controversial project
The Tren Maya project is a massive win for the López Obrador administration. However, it has drawn enormous criticism, including from environmental groups. More than 3 million trees were cut down to clear the way for the route, according to The Wall Street Journal , which has been a major blow to the natural habitats of local wildlife, like jaguars and spider monkeys. The train’s route will also bring greater exposure to Mayan communities that are deep in the jungle and have managed to evade the overtourism that has been a rising issue in the Mexican Caribbean.
Additionally, the train costs were also originally expected to be $7.5 billion, but they have ballooned to closer to an estimated $30 billion , according to the Financial Times .
Whatever one’s opinion is of the Tren Maya, there’s little denying that it will be a game changer for tourism to Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula and that it will have a dramatic effect on how travelers move around the region and where people choose to visit in the future.

Panama Canal Railway, Panama
The Panama Canal Railway is a tale of two oceans, linking Panama’s Atlantic coastline with the Pacific Ocean. The railway passes across the Isthmus of Panama from Colón (Atlantic) to Balboa (Pacific), near Panama City, cutting through the Panamanian countryside and showing off some of the country’s lesser-trodden but breat-taking landscapes.
The line was built in the 19 th century, by the United States following the California Gold Rush, and today is jointly owned by the Panama Canal Railway Company and Kansas City Southern. It’s one of the greatest railway journeys in South America , cutting through lush rainforests, passing by canal locks, through the historic Gaillard Cut and over the narrow causeways in Gatun Lake. For travellers new to Panama it’s a fantastic way to see some great parts of the country in an hour.
Prices from: US $25.00 Departing from: Colón, Panama City Journey length: 1 hour
Panama Canal Railway route
The Panama Canal Railway Company offers daily service (Mon–Fri) between Panama and Colon, covering a track of 76.6km in an hour. In just an hour passengers are treated to a feast of stunning scenery, through vine-strewn jungle, along the Panama Canal, through the verdant valley of the Gaillard Cut and the freshwater Gatun Lake. The train departs from Balboa to Colón at 7:15am and from Colón to Panama at 17:15.
Panama Canal Railway train
The Panama Canal Railway’s carriages hark back to the golden age of travel, with polished wood panelling, plush leather banquettes and armchairs, pattern carpeted floors, soft lamp lighting and wooden blinds. The train also boasts modern amenities like air-conditioning and toilets. Open-air viewing decks allow for passengers to get up and close with the rainforest, while a 1938 Southern Pacific Dome car allows for covered, but unobstructed views. Snacks and drinks are available to purchase on board.
What we love
The chance to travel from Colón to Panama City in just an hour, combining a luxurious on-board experience with stunning views. The train has comfortable and premium carriages and whizzes past some of Panama’s top sights like the Canal, rainforest and Gaillard Cut.

4 Exciting Train Trips in South and Central America
Become inspired and discover train rides across South America through magnificent landscapes, in both luxurious and rugged, authentic trains. Many travelers assume that traveling by train in South America must be cumbersome and unreliable, but I will mention here four train rides well worth the time and effort to acquire the train tickets. Some of the world's best rail journeys await you in South America. One or more of the following four train journeys is bound to match your taste, whether you prefer dramatic mountain landscapes, tropical rainforests, or infinite pampas. Get ready to be introduced to some of the most exciting train trips on the South American continent.
Peru Rail Titicaca Train, Peru
The Perurail Titicaca Train is the former Andean Explorer Train. The charming Pullman wagons make you feel like you’re sitting in a dining car from the 1920s. You’ll enjoy stunning scenery from the windows while the train travels along the upper Urubamba Valley and across southern Peru's Altiplano region. The train also features a bar and observation car at the end of the train where you can meet other travelers, sip a pisco-sour, and enjoy the magnificent scenery. The overall journey from Cusco to Lake Titicaca takes 10 hours. Included in the ticket price is a three-course gourmet meal with a glass of excellent wine. The Perurail Titicaca Train runs two trains per week in each direction between Cusco and Puno.
Consult the Perurail website for departure dates, prices, and timetables.
Serra Verde Express, Brazil
The Serra Verde Express in Brazil runs from the city of Curitiba to Moretes in southeastern Brazil. The three-hour train journey crosses the tropical Serra do Mar mountain range, passing from the highlands down to sea level. Only a few trains in South America penetrate as deeply into the jungle as the Serra Verde Express does. I recommend traveling in a carriage where you can open the windows to get a better feel of the tropical journey. Air-conditioned carriages are also available if you prefer.
Visit the Serra Verde Express website for departure dates, ticket prices, and timetables.
The region of Moretes is very scenic, with many sites to visit. Therefore, consider booking a tour that includes the train journey as part of the trip and that provides a private vehicle with which to see the surroundings areas of Moretes.
Note that the journey on the Serra Verde Express is a popular excursion for local Brazilian tourists, so the morning train can get very crowded. Consider traveling to Moretes by car and then traveling back to Curitiba on the much less crowded afternoon train. The Serra Verde Express is part of our trip, "Grand Rail Tour of Brazil."
Expreso Oriental Chiquitania
The “Expreso Oriental Super Pulman” departs from the tropical Bolivian City of Santa Cruz de la Sierra for its journey via San Jose de Chiquitos to Puerto Quijarro at the Brazilian Border. The first part of the trip to San Jose de Chiquitos is especially fascinating because the train travels this portion of the journey during daylight. Passing through the flatlands east of Santa Cruz to the Chiquitania region, one can view the area’s famous colonial Jesuit missions, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Most local travelers continue the train journey to Puerto Quijarro, where the Train arrives the following day.
The train departs from Santa Cruz on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 1:20 p.m. Information about the train journey and the exact timetable can be found on the Expreso Oriental website.
Locals sell drinks and snacks on the train, but it is always a good idea to have a personal food reserve with you in case the train gets delayed. Have your hotel in San Jose booked in advance and ask for the transfer from the railway station to the hotel, especially if you stay in one of the better hotels outside of town.
The Panama Canal Railway
The Panama Canal Railway is the shortest railway journey described here. The journey lasts for one hour and stretches from Panama City on the Pacific side to Colon on the Atlantic.
The Panama Canal train leaves Panama City each Monday through Friday at 7:15 a.m. and reaches Colon at 8:15 a.m. The train follows along the Panama Canal, and at some points during the journey huge vessels can be observed traversing the Canal. The train departs for the return trip from Colon at 5:15 p.m. and reaches Panama City at 6:15 p.m. I recommend the morning trip. Note that on Saturdays and Sundays the train does not run.
The carriages are air-conditioned, and there is a dome car as part of the train. Each carriage has a small open-air area from which you can enjoy excellent views of the Panama Canal.
Not far from the Colon Station is the new stunning Aguas Claras lock and the San Lorenzo Fort. To get around in that area you will need a private car. Therefore, it is best to take the train trip as part of an organized tour.
The Panama Canal Railway journey is part of our tour "Coffee & Rum by Rail in Colombia and Panama."

Quick Facts
- 15 Stations from Palenque Chiapas to Cancun Airport, Quintana Roo.
- Owned by the Mexican Armed Forces
- Opened December 1, 2023
- 99 MPH or 160 km/h
- Length 948 mi or 1,525 km
Opening December 1, 2023
The Tren Maya, also known as the Mayan Train project, is a long railway in Mexico that goes through the Yucatán Peninsula. It started being built in June 2020 and is supposed to start running by December 1, 2023. The railway starts in Palenque in Chiapas and goes towards Cancún in Quintana Roo with two different routes that go around the peninsula. The goal of the project is to connect popular tourist spots on the coast with less-known places inland, like historical Mayan sites.
In December 2020, President López Obrador said the military would run parts of the route, and the profits would support pensioners and retirees from the armed forces. In March 2021, Fonatur’s director, Rogelio Jiménez Pons , stated that the military would manage the entire route and keep all the profits.
In September 2021, Pons mentioned that local people might pay around 50 pesos for a trip from Cancún to Playa del Carmen , but tourists might pay 800 to 1000 pesos because they get extra services like restaurants. The route was changed in January 2022 to speed up construction and no longer go through Playa del Carmen. By June 2023, about two-thirds of the project was done, and the plan was for operations to start on December 1, 2023.
During construction, workers and archeologists found over 8,000 ancient artifacts and structures from archaeological sites by January 2021. There are concerns about the impact on wildlife, especially jaguars, and groups like the National Alliance for Conservation of the Jaguar have suggested building wildlife corridors to help.
Environmental organizations like the Centro Mexicano de Derecho Ambiental have accused Fonatur of cutting down trees without proper permits and not following environmental rules. In November 2021, the government exempted Tren Maya and other projects from environmental reviews. Originally, the trains were supposed to be electric, but plans changed in June 2020 to use diesel for cost reasons. Later, in August 2020, they decided to electrify half of the cars on the route.
In March 2022, Greenpeace protesters tied themselves to machinery in Quintana Roo to protest construction that was harming the environment without proper studies.
Tren Maya Ruta / Mayan Train Route

The Tren Maya is a railway project aimed at connecting tourist and cultural destinations in the southeast of Mexico, promoting economic development and sustainable tourism in the region. The Tren Maya route covers approximately 1,525 kilometers and passes through the following states:
- Yucatán: The route begins in the city of Mérida, the capital of Yucatán, known for its rich cultural and archaeological heritage.
- Campeche: It continues towards Campeche, famous for its well-preserved historic center and 17th-century forts.
- Quintana Roo: The train ventures into Quintana Roo, home to the famous tourist area of the Riviera Maya, which includes destinations like Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cancún.

Getting Around in Central America
The most frustrating and stressful part of traveling in Central America is getting from point A to point B. The roads are awful and, though there are plenty of local buses, they are usually decrepit and packed and take forever. It is often wise to spring for a private shuttle, especially if you are traveling with other people. (The international bus companies that travel between Central America countries have much better standards.). Because car-rental agencies don't allow cars to be taken across international borders, it's very difficult to drive from country to country. And there is zero train service.
Copa (tel. 800/359-2672; www.copaair.com) offers the most comprehensive plane service in Central America. The Panama-based airline travels between all the capital cities and is a strategic partner with Continental Airlines. Grupo Taca (tel. 800/400-8222; www.taca.com), also has several routes between Central American countries.
Many countries offer "puddle jumper" or propeller-airline flights. These flights are not for the fainthearted, as you literally sit right behind the pilots and it can get a little claustrophobic. As you are checking in, the plane's crew will weigh your bags and then weigh you so as not to overload the aircraft -- you'll want to pack light.
No matter what flight you book, always be sure to reconfirm your flight upon arrival.
Though they're a hassle, a bus journey in Central America will likely be one of the lasting memories of your trip. (They're also by far the cheapest way to get around.) Chaotic bus stations, pushy touts, hordes of vendors, and buses packed with people and with livestock will, at the very least, truly allow you to feel that you have left home.
There are different types of buses throughout Central America and each country may use different terms, but they generally fall into the following categories: Local buses, otherwise known as "chicken buses," are the cheapest and slowest; they stop frequently and are generally an old, dilapidated American school bus with colorful clientele that may include small farm animals. Many of these buses are intercity or urban buses that service the satellite towns of a particular city. Expreso buses are like chicken buses, in that they are cheaper and slower, but they do not stop (in theory) between cities. They also run much less frequently than the local buses.
Probably the most inconvenient aspect of local bus travel in Central America is that many towns or cities have no central bus stations. In lieu of that, the "stations" are dirty platforms beside busy markets on the city outskirts, where overly enthusiastic touts literally grab tourists' bags and run them to the next departing bus. Many bus lines therefore do not have ticket offices, so you'll have to buy your ticket on the bus.
International buses run between major cities; these tend to be newer units and more comfortable, although very few are so new or modern as to have bathroom facilities, and they sometimes operate only on weekends and holidays. One advantage is they have their own private terminals so you avoid the chaos of heading to a local market to catch a bus. There are several express bus companies that provide services between Central American countries. Tica Bus (tel. 529/62-626-2880 in Mexico, or 507/314-6385 in Panama; www.ticabus.com) is one of the most reputable and travels from Mexico to Panama. King Quality (tel. 505/228-1454; www.kingqualityca.com) does not go as far north as Mexico but has a reputation for having more comfortable buses. Trans Nica (tel. 505/277-2104 in Nicaragua) and Central Line (tel. 505 / 254-5431 in Nicaragua) are two other well-known companies.
If traveling with another person, it is often wise to have one person in charge of luggage while the other secures the bus, tickets, and seats. It is also best to hold onto your bags when boarding and store them above your head where you can see them. Another good tip is when arriving at a terminal (if there is one), check out the departing timetable and book your seat (if you can) for when you plan to leave in a few days.
An alternative busing option is microbuses. These are small minivans that depart as soon as they fill up with passengers, which usually means every 20 minutes. Their main advantage is they depart from city-center locations. However, they can get crowded and are not recommended for long journeys, especially when traveling with luggage.
Pickup trucks are a popular form of public transport in rural areas. Bumpy and uncomfortable, they are often covered in canvas to protect the mostly local passengers from the elements.
Shuttle buses are becoming more and more popular, too. These are privately organized tourist transfers between cities, usually operated by a tour agency or hotel. Much more comfortable and faster than local transport, they are also a lot more expensive.
For a sense of distance, to travel south between all capital cities starting at Belize and ending in Panama is approximately 1,400km (868 miles) and would take 4 days of nonstop traveling.
There is no shortage of taxis in all major towns and cities. There are some differences to how they operate, however. For example, in some countries, taxis have no meter. If this is the case, make sure you agree on a price before climbing in and ascertain whether the price is per person or trip. Sharing with strangers is another frequent occurrence, and you may find yourself waiting while the driver stops along the way to pick up more people. This practice should be avoided at night.
In general, taxis are cheap, but keep in mind that the increasing price of gas is making transportation more expensive throughout the region, so prices quoted in this book are subject to change.
Central America's taxis are usually safe to hail from the street without going to special taxi stations. At night you'll need to call a cab from your hotel or restaurant, as many big-city streets are not safe to walk after dark. Never get into an unmarked car claiming to be a taxi.
The Caribbean provides many opportunities to travel by small boat. Small, local water taxis travel to the Bay Islands in Honduras, Caye Caulker in Belize, Bocas del Toro in Panama, and the Corn Islands in Nicaragua. In general, the shorter the ride, the smaller and more uncomfortable the boat will be. Some ferries are rusting hulks, such as the one that carries people, livestock, and cars to Isla Ometepe in Nicaragua. Larger boats, like the ones that cross Lago Nicaragua from Granada to San Carlos, may have first- and second-class seating but that's often on a first-come, first-served basis. First-class passengers generally get a sheltered bench below deck, while second-class passengers get seating on the exposed deck above. A hammock is invaluable on such extended voyages.
Note that boats can be particularly crowded around holiday time, especially Easter week, and common safety precautions should be taken during any trip.
Renting a car in Central America is no idle proposition. The roads are riddled with potholes, most rural intersections are unmarked, and, for some reason, sitting behind the wheel of a car seems to turn peaceful Central Americans into homicidal maniacs. But unless you want to see the country from the window of a bus or pay exorbitant amounts for private transfers, renting a car might be your best option for independent exploring. (If you don't want to put up with any stress on your vacation, it might be worthwhile springing for a driver, though.)
Be forewarned, however: Although rental cars no longer bear special license plates, they are still readily identifiable to thieves and are frequently targeted. (Nothing is ever safe in a car in Central America, although parking in guarded parking lots helps.) Transit police also seem to target tourists; never pay money directly to a police officer who stops you for any traffic violation.
Before driving off with a rental car, be sure that you inspect the exterior and point out to the rental-company representative every tiny scratch, dent, tear, or any other damage. It's a common practice with many Central American car-rental companies to claim that you owe payment for minor dings and dents that the company finds when you return the car. Also, if you get into an accident, be sure that the rental company doesn't try to bill you for a higher amount than the deductible on your rental contract.
These caveats aren't meant to scare you off from driving in Central America. Thousands of tourists rent cars here every year, and the large majority of them encounter no problems. Just keep your wits about you and guard against car theft and you'll do fine. Also keep in mind that four-wheel-drives are particularly useful in the rainy season (May to mid-Nov) and for navigating the bumpy, poorly paved roads year-round.
Among the major international agencies operating in Central America are Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz, National, Payless, and Thrifty.
Generally speaking, speed limits in the region are about 60 to 80kmph (37-50 mph) on major roadways and slower on secondary roads. You'll want to stick to this limit, as police speed traps are common, and you don't want a speeding ticket to put a damper on your trip.
It's sometimes cheaper to reserve a car in your home country rather than book when you arrive. If you know you'll be renting a car, it's always wise to shop around and reserve it well in advance for the high season because the rental fleet often can't match demand.
Note: Estimated driving times are listed throughout this book, but bear in mind that it might take longer than estimated to reach your destination during the rainy season or if roads have deteriorated.
The Art of Addresses in Central America
Addresses are an inexact science throughout Central America. Larger cities sometimes list building numbers in addresses but not always, and small-town addresses remain a simple set of directions usually mentioning the street, the neighborhood, a nearby landmark, the city, the state (or "departmento"), and the country. A typical small-town address might read, "4 Avenida Norte, Barrio El Centro across from the cathedral, La Paz, El Salvador." But most of the time, all you'll need is the name of the hotel, restaurant, or attractions to get you where you need to go.
Route numbers are very rarely used on road signs in Central America, although there are frequent signs listing the number of kilometers to various towns or cities. Your best bets for on-road directions are billboards and advertisements for hotels. It's always a good idea to know the names of a few hotels at your destination, just in case your specific hotel hasn't put up any billboards or signs. When taking a taxi, always try and have the address of your destination in Spanish so there are no misunderstandings with the driver.

8 great rail journeys to take across the USA

Considerably more relaxing than driving or flying, the best train rides in the US offer a leisurely sightseeing experience.© Alex Potemkin/Getty Images
There’s no getting around the sheer size and scale of the USA – it’s an absolute, supersized whopper – and the best way to see it all is via train.
The US has close to 3.8 million sq miles (10 million sq km) of sublime mountain ranges, parched desert, entire states engulfed in deep snow, you-gotta-go-see-it-to-believe-it cities, endless prairie land, six whole time zones and lakes so large you could lose whole countries down there. So while traveling around by plane might make sense from a convenience point of view – it’s not quite six hours to dart directly from New York to LA – there really is no better way to experience the sheer grandeur of the country than by taking one of these train vacations.
Considerably more relaxing than driving or flying, the best train rides in the US offer a leisurely, nostalgic sightseeing experience, often passing through pristine landscapes inaccessible by other means. The US is rich with amazing train journeys, but the routes listed below are the cream of the crop. From California to New England , here are eight epic US train trips our editors have selected, taken from Lonely Planet's Amazing Train Journeys .
1. The Sunset Limited
Route: New Orleans – San Antonio – Tucson – Phoenix – Los Angeles Distance and duration: 1995 miles (3211 km); 2 days
Amtrak's Sunset Limited is the ultimate American railroad ride and one of its most famous train journeys: east to west, coast to coast, clean through from the bars of New Orleans to the breakers of the Pacific Ocean. If you’ve always dreamed of taking a journey across the USA, but don’t much relish the prospect of two weeks spent cooped up in an automobile, then a ride on the Sunset Limited is the answer.
Sit back and let America’s landscapes buzz by: from Louisiana ’s bayous, past the high-rises of Houston , across the deserts of Texas and Arizona , over the Californian hills all the way to LA’s golden beaches. Saddle up, pardner: it’s gonna be quite a ride.
2. The Coast Starlight
Route: Seattle – Portland – Sacramento – Los Angeles Distance and duration: 1377 miles (2216 km); 35 hours
Trace America’s “left coast” in all its varied splendor. The 35-hour (OK, it’s Amtrak, so maybe more) trip between Seattle and Los Angeles curves alongside crashing Pacific waves, cuts through America’s lushest agricultural land and passes below snowcapped mountains and towering redwoods. Of all the Amtrak routes, the Coast Starlight offers the most scenic variety in the fewest hours.
It’s also the only Amtrak service with a dedicated parlor car, open only to passengers who book sleepers. The parlor conjures old-time rail romance, with wood paneling and soft lighting, plus a special menu and wine-and-cheese tastings. Highlights of this train ride include dramatic sunrise perspectives on 14,179ft (4322m) Mt Shasta , and a gorgeous midday traverse of Oregon's Cascade Range.
3. Metro-North Hudson Line
Route: New York City – Poughkeepsie Distance and duration: 69 miles (111 km); 1½ hours
Depart from New York City ’s iconic beaux arts Grand Central Terminal , stopping to admire the ornate astronomical ceiling painting in the vaulted main concourse and to slurp up oysters and a martini at the famous Oyster Bar.
Then roll through Manhattan and the Bronx and into the glorious green Hudson River Valley. Hugging the eastern banks of the river, New York’s Metro-North's Hudson line travels deep into American history. The names of the stops along the way speak to the area’s origins: Native American (Ossining, Poughkeepsie); Dutch (Spuyten Duyvil, Yonkers, Cortlandt, Peekskill); English (Hastings-on-Hudson, Scarborough). It’s a land so famously beautiful an entire art movement – the Hudson River School – was once dedicated to capturing its glory. For the cost of a burger and a beer, this view can be yours for almost two hours.
4. The California Zephyr
Route: Chicago – Omaha – Denver – Salt Lake City – San Francisco Distance and duration: 2438 miles (3924km), 51 hours 20 minutes
For soaking up the scenic grandeur of the North American continent, nothing compares with Amtrak’s California Zephyr train. This classic three-day journey travels nearly 2500 miles (4000km) across prairies, deserts, the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada on its way from Chicago to San Francisco. The scenery is magnificent throughout – especially when seen through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the lounge car – but if you can only do one section, opt for the riveting 185-mile (298km) stretch between Denver and Glenwood Springs, where the train travels through an often roadless wilderness of deep, narrow gorges near the Colorado River’s headwaters.
Near sunset, the train emerges into the majestic red rock desert of eastern Utah , then crosses overnight into the forbidding vastness of Nevada's sagebrush country, with salt flats and stark, arid mountains as far as the eye can see. Sunrise on day three reveals an entirely different desert: the blinding-white alkali flats and ghostly grey mountains near Winnemucca, Nevada. Just beyond the gambling-happy little city of Reno, the Zephyr climbs into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, then enters California’s imposing granite high country beyond the photogenic frontier town of Truckee.
5. Amtrak Downeaster
Route: Boston – Portland – Brunswick Distance and duration: 145 miles (233 km); 3 hours 25 minutes
As car-free city breaks go, this train escape is hard to beat, chugging from the downtown main streets of urban Boston to Maine ’s rural greens in under four hours. That’s from the seventh most densely populated city in the US to the state with the highest percentage of forest coverage, all in less time than it takes to cook an old-style Yankee plum pudding.
Even better, every stop on the Amtrak Downeaster features historic New England cities and towns, parks and seascapes, cottage arts and crafts, world-class shopping and stellar foods fashioned from farm-and-sea-fresh ingredients.
6. The New Mexico Rail Runner
Route: Albuquerque – Santa Fe Distance and duration: 97 miles (156 km); 90 minutes
One of America’s great unsung commuter railways, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express is a regional train that runs down the Rio Grande Valley , connecting the state’s largest city, Albuquerque, with its cultural and political capital, Santa Fe.
On the way it crosses the wide, high desert, giving views of arid mountains in all directions, and even passes through several of the state’s Native American tribal lands. A no-nonsense, clean and quick journey, its highlights are the sweeping views from the upper seats of the double-decker carriages. Taken as a day trip or a scenic but practical form of intra-state transport, the Rail Runner is a wonderful introduction to New Mexico ’s epic landscapes.
7. The Empire Builder
Route: Chicago – St Paul or Minneapolis – Spokane – Portland or Seattle Distance and duration: 2764 miles (4448 km); 46 hours
The Amtrak Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle glides through Wisconsin 's woodlands, Minnesota's lake country and the North Dakota prairies en route to a western horizon swarming with snow-capped Rocky Mountain peaks.
From Browning , Montana, an unforgettable 60-mile run along the southern edge of Glacier National Park leads to the park entrance at West Glacier, where nature lovers will want to break their journey before continuing to Seattle.
8. The Vermonter
Route: Washington, DC – New York City– Springfield – Essex Junction ( Burlington ) – St Albans Distance and duration: 611 miles (983 km); 13 hours 45 minutes
The Amtrak Vermonter runs once daily from Washington, DC to St Albans, VT. This is the most scenic route east of the Mississippi, especially in its northern reaches, where it snakes for four hours through the bucolic green hills and photogenic villages of rural Vermont.
Starting from the nation's capital, Washington, DC, the train runs north through one of the USA's greatest metropolises, New York City, before bowling out through Connecticut , Massachusetts and New Hampshire en route to the bucolic Vermont countryside and St Albans.

The Most Scenic Train Rides Across the US
This past June, I took a nine-hour train ride from Santa Barbara to San Francisco on board the Amtrak Coast Starlight, considered one of the country’s most scenic rail routes. The views proved so absorbing that I never actually made it to my assigned seat—sitting instead in the communal observation car for the entirety of the ride.
From the car’s glass-dome windows, California’s rugged coastline and golden hills revealed themselves to me. America’s West Coast fluctuated between the breathtaking and the dire—from endless ocean and cliff-top mansions to drought-ridden fields and cottages sinking between collapsed roofs. Peering out at the vast spectrum of life unfold before me, I enjoyed that slightly detached “from above” perspective rail travel affords you; through the journey, I observed both heartwarming humanity (lone fishermen and packs of surfers, a young girl wearing a pink tutu playing in a creek, an old man collecting driftwood at a campsite) as well as breathtaking nature (a flock of pelicans, meadows of yellow wildflowers, rolling sets of whitecap waves).
As the sun set on the second half of my journey, fellow passengers in the observation car formed an impromptu band complete with an acoustic guitar and mandolin. Word slowly spread and travelers trickled in from other parts of the train to take turns singing songs from cultures around the world.
While it would've been more efficient to fly between the two Californian cities, the meditative romance of slow-paced train travel lends truth to the cliché that the journey is just as important as the destination. And in a country as diverse as this one, there’s truly no better way to witness its beauty—and complexity—than by train.
With over a dozen long distance Amtrak routes and even more private rail operators in states like Alaska and Hawaii, the challenge then becomes picking which train trips to take. Here, we’ve selected 13 of the most scenic train rides in the US that are worth booking for the views alone.

Amtrak Adirondack
While the Northeast is more known for its commuter trains than sightseeing, Amtrak’s Adirondack route is a lovely exception. Relaunched in spring 2023 following its closure during the pandemic, the route runs from New York City to Montreal . Departing from the new Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station, the 10-hour train travels along the Hudson River up until Albany, then passes through Saratoga Springs and the dazzling Lake Champlain before arriving in Canada. Take this route in the fall during peak foliage season to watch New England’s changing autumnal colors glide by your window.

Monisha Rajesh, author of Around the World in 80 Trains and Condé Nast Traveler contributor , suggests taking this route during peak summer or deep mid-winter.
