The distance from the base village to the top of the fort is around 1.7 km & it will take anywhere between 2 – 2.5 hours for an average person to complete the trek. Because of the level of the trek, you do not require a local guide. The trail starts from a parking spot at the base village and is a gradual climb of 10-15 mins until the first plateau. The 2nd part of the trail is through a forest, and then you reach a point where you have to cross two tricky rock sections, which leads to the 3rd part & the final part of the trek. This 3rd part has two staircases along the route, after which you reach the top of the Sondai fort. There are shops opened by locals throughout the trek offering water, snacks, fruits & nimbu paani.

Sondai Fort Trek – Perfect Beginners Trek from Mumbai & Pune
Sondai Fort trek is a perfect trek for beginners or individuals who have not embarked on a trek in years. Easy to reach from Karjat, just about 9kms from the railway station, this is one of the ideal beginner-friendly treks to explore the breathtaking views of the Sahyadri mountain range. The best time to undertake Sondai Fort Trek is definitely in the monsoon season when you can catch the lush greens and the waterfalls, but this trek can be taken throughout the year.
The base village to start this trek is Sondewadi. It is easily accessible via road and takes approximately 30-40 minutes from Karjat railway station. This was my first trek after almost four years and the first ever planned trek from experts – T Trikon. Here is my unbiased review of trekking to Sondai Fort with T Trikon.
Table of Contents
Assembling at Karjat Railway Station by 8 Am
It is a day trek, and as per the planned itinerary shared by the experts at T Trikon, we reached the Karjat railway station by 8 am. The train timings for CST-bound fast trains to Karjat were shared by the team. From the railway station, we, comprising eight participants from mid-20s to late 40s, met our trek captain – Mr. Yash Kadam, a young man in his early 20s brimming with immense knowledge and stories of his career as a traveler. He kept us amused and entertained for most of the journey and the trek.
In a taxi arranged by T Trikon, we covered the half-hour journey to Sondewadi base village, where we took a halt at a peaceful village home for breakfast. We were served hot poha and chai, and the food was delicious. After our restroom break in hygienic washrooms, some of us changed into their trek shoes and were ready for the hike. By 10 am, we started our ascent in the hot, scorching sun. The temperature was high, but the coolness was balanced by our team of enthusiastic trekkers and the trek group leader.
The Sondai Fort Trek Ascend Begins
The fort is located at a height of 1200 ft above sea level. From the base village Sondewadi to the top, the distance is approximately 2 kms, and ideally, it takes just 2 to 2.5 hours to complete the trek to and fro. However, that’s for people who often trek. Although the level of the Sondai fort trek is not difficult, it took me some time getting used to the ascent.
There are stops in between as you reach the first plateau. Finally, some shade to fill your lungs and courage to begin again. The second part of the trek takes you through a forest. This bit had a few rocks that were still manageable to climb in the hot weather, but in the monsoon, it would definitely be a bit challenging. The final phase of the trail may appear the easiest from a distance, but you must climb two sets of staircases before reaching the top.
The view along the way is mesmerizing, despite it being the scorching summer season. As you carefully traverse the trail, remember to stop and breathe in the view. Having trekked Karnala and Shivneri forts in the past, I anticipated encountering a similar fort structure at the top. However, I found a small temple and a few flags, which still evoked a fort-like ambiance.
Despite the absence of a fort, the breathtaking view compensated for any disappointment. From atop, one can enjoy panoramic views of Morbe Dam and Prabalgad. However, beware of the monkeys that inhabit the area.
Sondai Fort trekking experience
The ascents might leave you breathless, but the descents demand total awareness, bringing you to a state of being present in the moment. That’s why it’s often said that while trekking, it’s not the mountain that you conquer, but your inner self. My experience of trekking to Sondai Fort was refreshing and memorable. From the outset to the numerous halts in between, and the refreshing lemon water during the descent, everything felt soul-soothing.
It was a welcome break from the daily grind. The itinerary planned by T Trikon was commendable as well. The sumptuous meal that awaited us post-trek added even more stars to our experience. The local village food was authentic and satisfying. I opted for the non-vegetarian meal, which included bhakri, dry chicken, rassa, and rice. However, the vegetarian meal was equally delicious.
After the meal, we rested at the village house for an hour and left for Karjat railway station at 4 pm. By 6 pm, we arrived back in Thane. The 12 hours in between were a revelation, inspiring me to embark on more treks and conquer greater heights, both externally and internally.
I want to express my gratitude to my yoga teacher, who inspired me to undertake this journey. Hopefully, I will go on more such treks this year.

Sondai is located between Karjat and Chowk highway and it offers a beautiful view of Morbe Dam, Prabalgad, Irshalgad, Rajmachi, Songiri forts and Matheran mountain range. This was used as a watch tower. The base village of Sondewadi stands on a considerable height. The route is easy and it takes approx 1.5 hrs to reach the top. In monsoon, a couple of rocks on the way become slippery. There are 2 water cisterns on machi (at the base of the pinnacle) and steps are carved out of rocks to go on the topmost point where an idol of Sondai Devi stands. Two more water cisterns are on the way and have potable water. Two missing steps in the rock makes one climb a small patch of 15 feet but proper hand holds and foot steps are available and that makes it easy even in monsoon. Wavarle is another village from where a bit of a difficult approach to the fort passes through the dense forest. Overall it’s an ideal one day hike in monsoon for new comers in the trekking field.

Karnala fort trek ❤️why we love this bird sanctuary.
Images may take 30s to load, else refresh
As a child my parents took me to Karnala fort trek as an introduction to Sahyadris. The Karnala Bird Sanctuary holds a special place in my childhood. Those golden memories of seeing peacock dancing , rabbits , mongoose & some colourful birds singing are still fresh in my mind. Over the years i have visited Karnala fort many times, but the views still fascinate me. People always ask me for a simple beginner sahyadri trek – answer to that has always been Karnala fort trek. It is easy for all members of the family and being just 10 kms from Panvel makes it the most sought after beginner trek. In this Karnala fort trek blog i will provide all the required information to plan this trek yourself & how the Karnala view changes from monsoon to summer. More adventures like Karnala fort at the end of this post.
Is Karnala trek difficult for beginners ?
Niraj what is the difficulty level of Karnala trek? Karnala trek is one of the easiest sahyadri trek perfect for beginners & families with normal stamina. Plus the bird sanctuary is a good way for kids to know more about nature. Being a very easy well marked trek guide is not needed for Karnala fort.
How long is the Karnala Trek ?
Karnala trek takes about 90 minutes to reach the top . The initial trek till the rest point 2 is the steepest and is the more time consuming. For all the family members Karnala fort will take 2 hour time in monsoon at max to reach the top.
What is the best time to visit Karnala bird sanctuary ?
Monsoon provides the best climate and the best views full of clouds , hence i prefer to do a monsoon trek. However winter has its own charm with beautiful sunsets. Winter is a good time for bird spotting as well. In this Karnala blog you will see photos of Karnala fort in monsoon , winter & summer. You can decide for yourself which weather do you like.
Khane me kya hai ?
There is a canteen inside the premises near the sanctuary where you will get good food. However if you are carrying any food with you make sure to eat properly with a lookout for monkeys who tend to like it too. Water is available in the rock cut cisterns / Tanks at the top . However with time the tanks usage as drinking water has reduced. Better to carry two water bottles with you.
Camping & stay at Karnala
Camping is not allowed on Karnala being a wild life reserved area. It is mostly done a one day trek & return.
How to reach Karnala Fort from Mumbai & panvel ?
Where is Karnala fort located? Karnala is located in Panvel taluka of Raigad district, Maharashtra. It is a famous landmark on left of Mumbai – Goa highway. On good days it can also be seen from the Old Mumbai-Pune highway as well as Mumbai-Pune expressway.
There are two routes for Karnala trek
Route 1 (Easy): NORMAL ROUTE ( From Mumbai-Goa Highway)
Mumbai – Goa highway passes through the Karnala bird sanctuary and is the easiest way to reach Karnala fort. Karnala lies some 10kms away from Panvel railway station ( which has got great connectivity with local trains as well as express trains). From Panvel railway station walking for 5 minutes to the ST stand( state transport buses ) you will get to see many bus options.
Take any local bus heading to Alibaug, Pen or Sai which will take some 15-20 Rs & 20-40 minutes depending on traffic. Before getting into any bus make sure to check with the conductor whether the bus will stop at Karnala. If there are no bus with a scheduled stop at Karnala request them to give them the ticket of next stop but drop you at Karnala. For a bigger group there are large number of EECO ( rickshaw taxis ) out side the railway station as well as the ST depo which can drop you for about 300 – 400 Rs depending on the bargain.
Route 2( Longer & Confusing) : JUNGLE TRAIL
The Jungle Trail starts from Rasayani Railway station. I will describe this route in a different blog ( will update the blog link here)
Rajmachi , Manikgad & Songiri fort visible in the above map are also great day trek options
Forest Check Point at the start of Karnala Fort trek
Being a forest area there are certain rules which need to be followed.
- The timing for Karnala is from 7am to 1pm at the Entrance Check point & make sure to get down by 4pm.
- Entry fee is Rs 30 for adults .
- Parking fee is Rs 25 for bikes & Rs 100 for cars
- Camera charges are Rs 100 and Rs 250 for DSLRS / drones
- Bags will be checked for plastics & they will be charged at entrance for a refundable amount which you will get back on showing the proof while going out . This has been done to reduce loitering and is a good step towards keeping the area clean
Make most of your life
The most common question that i get asked is I want to travel a lot but I dont have leaves. Should I quit my job ? I have always suggested to not quitting unless you have another source of income. In search of this source of income I tried freelancing , trek leading, vlogging and I realised nothing works in the long term. After trying many different thinkgs finally I came across trading. This is perfect for someone who loves travelling & wants to earn from anywhere around the world
Learn trading for freedom. You can trade from anywhere around the world be it some off the grid village in Himachal or Meghalaya, be it some island in Andaman. All you need is an internet connection and a trading account. You can earn by trading for 1-2 hrs a day and would have freedom to do anything in the free time.Or you might have just earned enough in a day to take the month off travelling around the world. If you are able to learn this then it has potential to make all your dreams come true. I would suggest you take it up as a side project for 6 months to see if you have patience & intellect to master it.
Once you learn it, all you need is a trading account and a mobile to trade from anywhere in the world.
Karnala Trek Blog: TheFreeBird’s story
The entrance of Karnala makes me think that this is some kind of a Jurassic Park 🙂
This tar road will take you to the main Sanctuary where many birds have been kept in cages. Earlier there used to be different kinds of birds here but now only few are kept for public viewing. On enquiring with the officials they said that most of the birds have been released in the wild on government orders & only few injured ones are kept for rehabilitation. Lies i say 😉
Spotting a peacock dancing got me excited. There are few more houses here for officials & a canteen as well. From here onwards starts a trail to the Karnala fort trek. The start is a bit inclined and we need to walk the muddy stairs for abour 20 minutes to reach the Rest Point 2 ( Also called Nagesh Point) . In between there is also a rest point 1 build by the authorities as well. Lekin itne me thakk ke nahi chalega .
On weekends there is a mad rush at Karnala & you will only spot humans everywhere . I prefer weekdays to be one with nature. From the Rest point 2 , the trek becomes a normal walk till the base of the fort which is about 1 km away. I stayed silent and spotted many birds singing melodiously. Since it was a weekday the entire fort was empty. I spotted a peahen, parrots , monkeys ,mongoose, vanar ( big monkey) , many crabs and few birds with unusual colours & sounds which i could not identify.
I had now reached Roots point ( i named it so). This was once a normal route but lot of soil erosion over years has exposed all the roots. Here I spotted a mongoose looking at me. He might have been wondering how come this human is here on a weekday . Surprise. And it ran away into the bushes.
Monkeys at Karnala fort
I spotted few monkeys staring at me from far. The trick is not to look at the monkeys at all. Just look down and walk . If you try to show aggression , remember you are in their home and they will be aggressive as well. Just stay cool and walk. If you are having any girls / ladies in your group tell them not to shout out of fear, Also if they have any bags make sure to carry it off them.
Forts visible from Karnala fort
On some monsoon days when there are no clouds forts like Manikgad , Irshalgad , Kalavantin , Songiri , Matheran , Sondai , Prabalgad and sometimes even Rajmachi , Bhimashankar, Padargad & Kothaligad are visible . However today only clouds. Badal important hai boss . The entire region was under a cloud siege.
Walking further i saw the first glimpse of Karnala fort emerging majestically through the clouds.
As we near the actual fort we first reach a Bhawani Temple at its base which is almost half way to the top, i sat down and had some snacks. The actual Karnala fort begins from this area wherein you enter the fort through remains of fortifications
Moving ahead is a maze of stairs with pole railing fence to safeguard the slippery edges. I reached here just in time before the clouds wreathed the entire fort. Look at this beauty
The stairs to this main entrance are exposed and not in good shape. It would be nice to pass through these stairs as quickly as possile.
When there is no crowd this is indeed a gateway to heaven, the view from this gate is very beautiful. Have a look at the video below. Make sure to follow me on Instagram for some offbeat nature trails
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Niraj Bhagat (@i_am_thefreebird)
As you see in the above pic the view from the entrance is beautiful throughout the year. As I continued ahead the main gate is near by. This gate has been newly installed by some fort lovers. Nice !!!
By now it was getting late for me as the clouds had decided to end the daylight. Hence i rushed through the remaining part of the fort as quickly as possible. However the clouds & wind at the top made for a superb combination. I wanted to stay there and take in as much of this fresh air & the scenic view had to offer. When i returned here in winter the picture was very clear & equally welcoming
In the above photo you will see the Pandu tower which is a huge basalt rock which was used for keeping an eye on the enemy movements in the areas near by the Bor Ghar which connect Deccan & konkan plateau. Its not possible to climb it in monsoon. However it can be climbed in summer with proper technical mountaineering skills. Besides the tower is a armoury room which is in dilapidated condition. 5 years back i had seen the walls of that armoury to be higher, but with time it has got smaller in height. If you go in you will see a lot of fallen stones from the walls. If proper care is not taken at proper time these historical monuments will be lost forever.
At the base of this grand tower are atleast 10 water tanks ( may be even more) . These have been the source of drinking water for centuries. Now most of them lie in disregards and as a canvas for some idiots to write their names on. I dont know why people deface such monuments. What they achieve by writing names is beyond my grasp. Be a hero & prevent someone from doing this idiocy
Sonki flowering in September- October makes the fort come alive. The mighty rock tower has been attacked by clouds & rain for thousands of years still holds strong after centuries . When i came back in winter this view presents itself in a different way as you will see below.
The lower part of Karnala was looking terrific with all the green and yellow decoration. Monsoon has its own flavour with the clouds & greenery and winter has its own branding with beautiful sunsets.

I will prepare a full length YouTube video for this trek. However for the time being here is short video of Karnala trek. Make sure to subscribe to my channel or I will hide your trek shoes 😁 Youtube Short: https://youtube.com/shorts/iaDV85TYlcY
I sat here at the top for some time enjoying the nature. It was time to leave. I was completely drenched and would have loved a chai or cup of hot coffee. Say no more.
In winter I had lots of time to enjoy the sunsets & the beautiful lights of dusk. Since I was not drenched as in monsoon I just sat here for an hour to enjoy the orange hues
In winter I had lots of time to enjoy the sunsets & the beautiful lights of dusk. Since I was not drenched as in monsoon I just sat here for an hour to enjoy the orange hues & finally unwillingly left after the cold became unbearable.
Reached my bike & rushed home.
Thats it for the Karnala fort trek blog.

Wow. Karnala pics looks really good. Those yellow flowers look lovely
Thanks a lot. Sonki bloom in monsoon adds to the beauty
Is the fort accessible now, since I saw a news that fort is closed due to some cracks
Yes Aditi, when I visited last Friday the route was closed after the temple. It might be fixed after monsoon i guess
Great article! Excellent insights! Thank you! Do you think trekking up to the fort in April is doable and worth it? Would love to hear your thoughts
Thanks man. The entrance of fort at first gate is blocked for rework. Not sure on when the work will be completed… If it does get completed…then u can see the entire fort…however in April it would be very hot & not necessarily a good trek time…if u still want to do it in April starting the trek very early is the only option

Nimgiri Fort Trek
Nimgiri fort trek lies in the Pune district at a height of 1054 ft ASL. It is adjacent to the Hanumantgad fort trek and are separated by a small cleft. It lies in the Balaghat mountain range of the Sahyadris.
Not much is documented about this fort in terms of history. There are a lot of relics and remains of the fort.
At the end of the steps, a path leads to the cave carved in the hills of Nimgiri on the right. The cave was dug for surveillance, has been partially abandoned. The views from the cave are spectacular especially during the monsoon. Rock cut steps take you straight to the gates of the Nimgiri fort. The Nimgiri fort trek is known for these rock cut steps.
The steps are detoriated at some places and there are three steps missing in one place. This along with the accumulation of soil makes these steps a risky affair. Caution must be taken if climbing via this route. However climbing these steps from the gorge to the top of the fort is absolutely beautiful and thrilling. There is a rock carved guard post (known as devdi) on the way.
A route exists that bypasses the steps and passes through the col between the twin peaks of Nimgiri fort and Hanumantgad fort. It gives you an opportunity to watch the splendid views on the western side of the fort.
There is a gate that lies in ruins. There are signs of fortification around the gate. Once inside you can see 3 water cisterns on the trail. A small temple can be seen here with a domed roof, the water cistern in frnt of this temple is potable after filtration. The other two tanks are not recommended for drinking.
The temple has a door and a sculpture if Gajalaxmi with a Shivling in the front. There are 3 graves on the slope.
Further on the trail there are three caves. One of these caves is large enough to accommodate a group of 5 to 6 people. This cave also houses a water cistern. The second cave has a collapsed roof and the last one is used by the villagers to keep their cattles. There are architectural remains scattered across the fort.
The top of the fort offers views of the other fort treks in the vicinity like Chavand, Jeevdhan Harishchandragad, Hadsar and Sindola. Nimgiri fort is in the western valley of Junnar. One can see Manikdoh in front and Pimpalgaon dam reservoir on the back. There are architectural remains scattered across the fort.
The base village for the Nimgiri fort trek is Khandichiwadi. The trail starts from the primary school in the village and leads you with Nimgiri fort on the right side of the gorge and Hanumantgad on the left side.
One can see a high voltage pole on the way from the village. This is where the Kalubai temple is. Further to this you’ll see a shelter and a watchtower built by the Forest department, the trail goes between the two. The trail ascends steeply from here to the base of the fort. A small tree has the directions to both the forts nailed to it. At the end of the steps, a path leads to the cave carved in the hills of Nimgiri fort on the right. From here it takes about 20 minutes to reach the gorge between Nimgiri and Hanumantgad.
Once on the cleft, a steep ascent leads directly to the base of the fort. At the end of the steps, a path leads to the cave carved in the hills of Nimgiri on the right.
There are rock carved caves that take you to the top of the fort. Though they are the most thrilling part of the trek, they must be tread with a lot of care as there are steps missing in one place and the accumulation of soil makes it a risky affair. You reach a guards post on the way, from here the top of the fort can be reached in 10 minutes.
Another trail from the cleft takes bypasses the steps and joins it a point above the risky stretch of the steps. This trail also offers splendid views on the western side of the fort.
The trail continues to the top where you can visit the temples, the rock cut caves and the multiple water cisterns of the fort. Extra care must be taken while descending from the steps especially during monsoon.
How to reach
The base village for the Nimgiri for trek is Khandechiwadi. The easiest way to get here is to reach Junnar from Pune-Mumbai. A road from Manikdoh dam near Junnar takes you towards towards Ghatghar village towards Naneghat. This distance is about 25 km from Junnar and about 10 kms from Hadsar village.
If going from Mumbai, one can go via Kalyan-Murbad by catching any State transport (ST bus) to Alephata or Junnar. Those coming from Pune have no choice but to reach Junnar. At a distance of 2kms after passing Malshej Ghat there is a fork. One has to continue for about 4kms on it to reach a village called Pargaon. From here one can take a road to Khandepadyar via Borwadi-Madh. The same road goes further to Hadsar.
Khandepada or Khandechiwadi, the base village is 7 km from Pargaon. The village road near the base village is in a bad condition and there are no vehicles that reach here. There is only an ST bus that arrives at Borwadi at 2 PM, there are no buses after that.

Sondai Fort: An Ideal Beginner Trek. Sondai fort, located near Karjat, is one of the easiest treks in Maharashtra. Located at an altitude of 1200 ft, it was a watch tower, and it got its name after the Sondai goddess temple at the top. One can see many forts from the top part of the Matheran range. Altitude: 1,200 feet.
Sondai fort lies at the end of Matheran range, just beside the Morbe dam in Khalapur taluka Raigad, Maharashtra. There are two routes for Sondai Fort from Wavarle & Sondewadi. Since Sondai wadi is the most used route I will discuss that route in this Sondai blog. Nearest Railway Station is Karjat. Base village for Sondai fort trek is Sondewadi.
The Sondai fort trek has an easy trail and takes approximately an hour to reach the fort. The trail becomes a bit hard during monsoon as the rock steps become slippery. There are two routes to reach the fort. The one from Sondewadi is more preferable since the route from Wavarle has a little difficult approach as it passes through a dense forrest.
