In February, the superstar country music duo Dan + Shay will hit the road in support of their 2023 album Bigger Houses, an album that helped the pair rebuild and recenter after a long period of burnout. The tour will kick off in Greenville, South Carolina, and will include support from Ben Rector and Hailey Whitters. You can explore the set list exclusively here first.

Country music has never sounded so smooth or “dare say” metropolitan than with the charismatic duo Dan + Shay. If it weren’t for the singers occasional country twang vocalizations, one could almost believe they were listening to a top 10 pop song performed by Imagine Dragons or Maroon 5.

Though Dan Smyers (born 16 August 1987) and James Shay Mooney (born 27 December 1991) did not start performing together until 2012 both members had pursued other music related projects in the past. Smyers a native of Wexford, Pennsylvania, US and an alumni of Carnegie Mellon University initially acted as a solo artist on T-Pain’s label Nappy Boy Entertainment. He later went on to join Bonaventure as well as the pop punk group Transition.

Around this time Shay (four years younger than Dan) was still in high school. After graduation he briefly attended Valley Forge Christian College in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, but dropped out to follow his dream of being a musician. Some of Shay’s earliest works were his performances with fellow country artist, Veronica Ballestrini. The two picked up a strong youtube following and consistently posted videos online of cover songs and originals.

Dan and Shay met at the close of 2012 in Nashville, Tennessee, US and the very next day started writing songs together. The duo showed a strong sense of chemistry from the very get go. The 1st song they wrote was a contending track for the Rascal Flats to use. This undoubtedly set off a storm of hype and landed the group several offers for a record deal. They eventually signed on to Warner/Chappell Music and on 14 October 2013 issued their debut single “19 You + Me”. The track was positively received, praised for it’s warm sentimental tone. This song as well as their hit single “Show You Off” were featured on their 1st studio album “Where It All Began”. The album was released on April Fools 2014, but this release was no joke. It saw the band skyrocket to success, playing at the Grand Ole Opry, making highly publicized appearances such as on the Ellen Show and even scoring a nomination at the Academy of Country Music Awards for “Vocal Duo of the Year”.

Additionally the duo has made quite a stir on the road. Dan + Shay embarked on a tour in promotion for their debut album and opened for big name country acts such as Hunter Hayes and Blake Shelton. Later that year the duo gained enough prominence to head off on a 12 date headlining tour.

Live reviews

I purchased the VIP package and I was not disappointed. This was definitely one of the best shows, if not the best show, I've ever had the privilege to see and hear. First of all, the venue was perfect.

Haling from Gary, IN, it was definitely off the beaten path but it was still very easy to access. Additionally the parking was free, convenient and there were ample spaces. Once we got inside the venue, everything was very organized and efficient. The Meet and Greet, acoustic show, photos and autographs went off without a hitch and everyone was very pleasant. Additionally the venue itself was very comfortable because you had the option to sit or stand, every seat had a good view of the stage and while it had an intimate feel, it wasn't crowded, even in the standing room only area on front of the stage.

Once the show began, I enjoyed every artist, but especially Dan and Shay. I had an opportunity to see them last year when they performed at the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds with Hunter Hayes and I enjoyed them immensely then, which is why I decided to see them again this year. To do do, I had to drive over four hours and incur a one night stay at a local hotel in Clayton, in addition to the cost of the VIP tickets, but it was so worth it. I thought Dan and Shay were pretty good when I saw them last year but this year, they were even better. They have really grown as live performers and it was obvious, from the vocals to the instrumentation. My dad accompanied me to the show last year, so this year I brought my mom. Prior to the show, she wasn't familiar with any if the artists but after the show, she was a fan of all three.

Dan + Shay aren’t your regular crusty country old timers. This duo are hoping to bring a bit of youthful polish to the genre and having already scored a number one album on the country charts this year, it looks like the fans are ready for it. With a combined age of less than that of a lot of country singers, this pair have developed quite a song writing connection, and with that comes a palpable chemistry that is clear to see on stage.

The pair are magnetic, bringing at bit of almost boy-bandish charm to their sets which definitely helps to get the crowd involved. They stride confidently from song to song, with Shay often displaying the full range of his vocal skills leaping from a rich mid-range to a heavenly falsetto without missing a beat. The songs are honest and pure and make for some real lighters-in-the-air sing-along moments. If you’re a young person who thinks that maybe country isn’t for them I would recommend seeing Dan + Shay who will make you realise how poignant and current the genre can be. And they ain’t too hard on the eyes either…

This was my first time going to see Dan+Shay. I have heard them on the radio, and I am a die-hard country fan. I was totally blown away by their vocals and harmoney. I think Shay has to be the best vocalist (technically) in all country music. His falsetto is to die for! They were at the Orpheum Theater in Omaha, NE. It was a smaller venue, but the house was rockin!I have never heard a crowd get that loud, and then take it up another level! And to donate the proceeds of merch sales to our flood relief efforts, was a classy move. They put on the best show, and if you haven't ever seen them live, you should!

It was a true privilege to to see this amazing duo in such an intimate venue. Dan +Shay are a real talent only now being appreciated by UK audiences. They sang their hits, album tracks and a couple of well chosen covers. Their voices blend beautifully, the sound they make is melodic and sounds bigger than just the 2 of them. They had a great rapport with the crowd, even agreeing to meet every single one of them at the end of the show for a quick chat, hug and a photo. It was a fantastic show, enjoyed by everyone and I can't wait to see them again!

Dan + Shay gave an amazing show. They were very interactive with the crowd, kept us guessing for the setlist, even let us believe they weren't going to play Tequila. It sucked that we had a big truck parked in the crowd with people sitting on recliners placed on a connected trailer. Other than that and waiting forever after the rodeo, this show is at the top of my list. Dan +Shay are down to earth, great performers, and even better looking in person. I plan to see them again!

I have never wanted to go to a concert in my life until I began listening to Dan+Shay. When I found out they were coming to Ohio, I had to be there. I am proud to say that my 1st concert experience was AMAZING!!!! The way you can see how humble they are and how appreciative of their fans they are, is just wonderful. They keep the crowd entertained throughout the concert and they were very interactive. Every time they come to Ohio or any surrounding area I will be there!!!

Dan + Shay put on an incredible show. These guys kept the crowd alive the whole time with little breaks. Just jamming out. Also did a few covers that were awesome.

Only disappointment would be that I bought my tickets once it SongKick and Ticketmaster showed that Jackie Lee was opening. Another artist I really like. Then to find out a few days before, I wasn't happy.

All in all a great show and would have been even better if Jackie Lee was there as advertised.

Matthew_Perkins’s profile image

Yet again Dan*Shay didn't disappoint! Every song they sang was a sing-a-long number and the atmosphere rocked. The pair are true entertainers and kept the crowd going with great song after great song. They seemed overwhelmed and humbled by their reception here in the U.K.

I can't wait til they are back in 2018 with more gigs and new material!

This was my 7th time seeing them, and it was amazing. Like always. These boys put on a show and KILL it every time. They are beyond incredible. If they are coming to a city near you, then you need to go ahead and get tickets. It will be a night you'll never forget. Who knows you just might run into them getting off the tour bus.

Amazing show, I was not familiar with the opening acts but they did not disappoint. New fans for both acts. You could see the emotional with Dan & Shay in their performance all through the night. Love how they included an intermission in the show. Overall, I would definitely go see them perform again!!

Dan + Shay Tease Tour Setlist & Reveal Why Recording Album In A Pandemic Was A ‘Blessing & Curse’

Ahead of the release of Dan + Shay's new album, 'Good Things,' the guys dished about what it was like to make a record during the pandemic. Plus, they hinted at what to expect from the setlist on their upcoming tour!

dan + shay

Dan Smyers and  Shay Mooney , who are better known as the country music duo  Dan + Shay , will release their fourth album,  Good Things , on Aug. 13, 2021. It will be their first full record since  Dan + Shay , which came out in 2018. Of course, right off the bat, making  Good Things was different than anything that the guys have done in the past — because they had to plan, write and record most of the album during the COVID-19 pandemic!

“I think there was a blessing and a curse that we had making this record,” the guys told  HollywoodLife and other media outlets during an interview on Aug. 11. “It’s been a crazy year, but the one thing we did have was time. That’s something we haven’t had [recently]. You have your whole life to make your first record, then very little time in between tours to make something that you’re super proud of, with very limited time on the road. So, this time, one thing we did have was a lot of time. It’s amazing, but it’s also a different process when you’re putting it together. You’re starting to overthink things.”

Dan + Shay

Shay also praised Dan for how he used all that time to be even more “meticulous” than ever about the production on this album. “He spends a lot of time on the details, and that’s what’s so great about it,” Shay gushed. “It was amazing for me to sit back and watch the genius of the production of this record. I’m very proud of him and how much of a masterpiece his production is on this record. It was incredible to watch that.”

Overall, the guys said that making  Good Things was a “fun process,” and it led to them creating the project that they’re “super proud” of. “We think this is our best album, by far,” Shay admitted. “We had the time to think through things, but also keep ourselves at bay, not trying to overthink it. We’re super proud of this record and the whole process was really fun to be able to do this together.”

In addition to the album, Dan + Shay also have a massive arena tour coming up. The tour was originally scheduled for 2020, but got postponed amidst the coronavirus, and will now kick off in South Carolina on Sept. 9. Of course,  Good Things didn’t even exist when the tour was first supposed to happen, so the guys will have to do some tweaking to their setlist now that they have so many new songs to choose form.

Dan + Shay

“It definitely complicates it — in a good way!” Shay said. “Since we were playing our last arena tour, we hadn’t even really got to play “10,000 Hours” at that point, and then everything shut down. So it’s definitely an interesting process. It’s really cool to have a few more songs in our arsenal. It’s really cool to be able to do that, but it also made it more difficult trying to pick. What songs do we keep in there? There’s always going to be someone who’s like, ‘You didn’t play my favorite song!’ But unless we’re playing for three hours, it’d be really difficult to fit in every song that somebody loves and wants to hear.”

However, the guys promised to “keep a lot of the old stuff in there that people really reacted to live,” in addition to “some new stuff.” Luckily, fans will have some time with the new album before the tour begins, too. “I feel like this record, people are going to react to it, and hopefully they’ll want us to play the songs live,” Shay concluded. “We’re definitely going to be doing a lot of new songs. It’ll feel very fresh to us, as well, which is exciting!”

Kenny Chesney, Dan + Shay, Old Dominion bring stadium-size joy to Milwaukee at American Family Field

dan and shay tour setlist 2022

Kenny Chesney tried to process what it meant to finally be on stage in Milwaukee Saturday night. But it was clear no words would do justice.

“It’s impossible to explain all the energy you feel,” Chesney told 40,000 fans at American Family Field .

Honestly, he didn’t need to say a thing. Across a two-hour set, you could see the immeasurable gratitude on his face. And you could feel the deep appreciation from his screaming, singing fans.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

They were supposed to gather together here on April 25, 2020, back when the Brewers stadium was known as Miller Park. But then, of course, COVID.

Saturday was the first Milwaukee stadium concert since Billy Joel in April 2019. It was Chesney’s first concert in the city since April 2018.

So a couple of songs into Saturday’s show, Chesney vowed that “every soul on this stage” was going to give the fans and this show “every cell in their bodies.”

That was already apparent. The show kicked off with “Beer in Mexico,” the customary, feel-good, sun-and-booze-loving Chesney show-opener. I’d say it was just like fans remembered it — except it was better. Chesney's band, which this year welcomed strong new additions Danny Rader on guitar and Nick Buda on drums, traditionally flexes during the song, but they were clearly so thrilled to be back on stage that the big rock finish really ripped.

And Chesney, in constant movement from the start, seemed the most excited of all. By the fourth song "Here and Now" — the title track for Chesney's latest album, and the name of his tour — his arms were glistening in sweat, and his tank top was drenched. Even during the breezier bits of "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem," Chesney was so energized he was swiftly moving all over the end of the catwalk.

The first time he was stationary behind a mic stand was for "Anything But Mine" — and that was 12 songs and a full 55 minutes into the set. Even during that brief respite, he made sure to keep the energy alive, bringing out Matthew Ramsey and Brad Tursi from opener Old Dominion for a subsequent performance of "Save It for a Rainy Day" — and then was back to running all over the stage for "When the Sun Goes Down."

There were a couple of songs from the latest album in Saturday's setlist. "Here and Now" opener "We Do" had a reception that rivaled the setlist standards, although Chesney seemed almost apologetic while performing the slower new single "Knowing You," thanking the crowd for indulging him, even though it is certified platinum.

He knows people wanted to hear the older hits, and fans and superstar both relished being able to hear them live again.

The crowd singalong for "I'll Go Back" was so bold that Chesney practically leaped 10 feet, and, by the end of the song, had dropped to his knees. After "American Kids" wrapped, Chesney was so moved by the crowd reception he was practically misty-eyed. And a couple of songs that seemed like simple, escapist fare before — "Get Along" and "Everything's Going to Be Alright" — felt more nourishing live in the wake of the collective trauma we've all experienced from COVID-19.

The show ended, as always, with "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" and Chesney doing a marathon autograph session for fans in the pit. One fan he brought onstage to give an autographed Brewers helmet seemed so elated it looked like she was about to explode. And then before leaving the stage, Chesney promised the Wisconsin branch of his No Shoes Nation fan base that he would see them soon.

Again, that could have gone unspoken. There's no way he's going to let another four years go by before playing a stadium show in Wisconsin again.

Dan + Shay bring the love songs and Bucks love

Country-pop duo Dan + Shay played a big Milwaukee show just eight months ago, selling out Fiserv Forum. Immediately preceding Chesney with a 70-minute set Saturday, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney got to play for an even larger crowd in Brew City.

Except it wasn’t completely their crowd. So the musically milquetoast, moon-eyed ballads met with big singalongs in town last September were greeted largely with disinterested chatter among Chesney fans across the stadium.

But Dan + Shay would not be deterred, buttering up the crowd with flattery and a “Bucks in seven” shoutout from Mooney. They also took a risk playing “Glad You Exist” with a lone acoustic guitar; it paid off. And their biggest hits — “10,000 Hours,” “Speechless,” “Tequila” — had the crowd’s undivided attention, with Mooney closing out the latter with a stirring vocal note as strong as a shot of Patrón.

Old Dominion honor Taylor Hawkins

Old Dominion was the only opener attached to the lineup when the Chesney show was first announced in 2019 to actually perform Saturday. They also must be Chesney’s favorites — this was their fourth opening gig for him in Wisconsin since 2015.

Don’t be surprised if they get the prime opening slot next time. Old Dominion scored the first stadium-wide singalongs during their hour set with “Break Up With Him” and cheeky new single “I Was on a Boat That Day,” with guitarist Trevor Rosen rocking an accordion at the end of the catwalk.

It was one of a handful of curveballs that distinguished the band from serviceable sets of the past. Brad Tursi busted out some smoking blues guitar licks leading into “Can’t Get You,” and relished frontman duties for a cover of Keith Urban’s “Wild Hearts,” a song he co-wrote.

And frontman Matthew Ramsey led the band through a soaring cover of Foo Fighters’ “Learn to Fly,” a tribute to recently passed drummer Taylor Hawkins, whose picture flashed on the big screen at the end.

Carly Pearce sets a high bar

Anyone who made it to their seats on time was rewarded with the best songwriter and singer of the night, Carly Pearce, the reigning ACM and CMA female vocalist of the Year.

Her voice sounded superb in that massive stadium, but it was the words she was singing that were so striking. The half-hour set primarily focused on her terrific 2021 album “29: Written in Stone,” which partially chronicles her divorce from fellow rising country star Michael Ray.

Under the warm sun from that huge stage, she turned emotionally naked gems like “What He Didn’t Do” and her Ashley McBryde-featuring “Never Wanted to Be That Girl” into cathartic, reassuring anthems. Her genuine excitement — she talked about achieving her lifelong dreams, and going from cleaning Airbnbs to being a Grand Ole Opry member — likely contributed to the emotional shift live.

The set also recalled another promising female country artist who had that first Chesney opening slot in this same ballpark a decade ago. That was Kacey Musgraves, who's since become a culture-shifting, arena-headlining superstar. Saturday's performance suggested Pearce could end up in a similar place.

The takeaways

  • After waiting more than two years for this night to finally happen, it was only right that Chesney and his fans were blessed with impeccable weather Saturday for all the tailgating and the show itself, where the roof of American Family Field remained open the whole time.
  • That marathon autograph session that Chesney does at the end as the band rocks out lasts six full minutes, or at least it did Saturday. There was no way to keep count of the number of shirts, hats and flags he signed. Then after wearing out his wrist, he posed for a picture onstage with his band and crew and a dog who was way chiller about being on stage at a concert in a baseball stadium than my dog (and probably your dog) would have been.
  • Right after their opening song “Make It Sweet,” Old Dominion frontman Matthew Ramsey tossed his electric guitar 10 feet to a roadie — who dropped it. But Ramsey just laughed it off.
  • Favorite fan interaction: A guy in my row dropped his baseball cap over the railing on the club level. With help from his friends, he managed to get someone’s attention below, who tried tossing the back up. Gravity fought back but after several attempts the guy managed to grab his hat, and patted his hand on his chest in gratitude.
  • This was the first stadium concert in Milwaukee since Billy Joel in April 2019 — but the Brewers are making up for lost time this year. With Eric Church May 28, this is the first time Milwaukee has had two stadium concerts in a single month since June 1975. And Motley Crue and Def Leppard are coming up at American Family Field on July 17.

Concert review: Dan + Shay deliver high-energy cheer at Xcel Energy Center

C ountry duo Dan + Shay emerged from beneath the stage Friday night at St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center, dramatically lit from behind and strutting to the final notes of Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood,” a song about betrayal.

Yet the 100-minute show that followed offered nothing but merry, breezy and infectious country/pop songs that had the capacity crowd glowing. The vibe felt a lot like it did back during the pair’s first local headlining arena show when they filled Target Center in September 2021 and gave each other a number of seemingly spontaneous hugs. (It was one of the first major country tours to hit the road after COVID restrictions began to lift.)

Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney first met in 2012 as aspiring songwriters living in Nashville. They hit it off, began writing together the next day and within two months had multiple offers for publishing deals. A year later, they issued their debut single “19 You + Me” and watched it sail into the Top 10. Friday night they played it and nearly every one of their 15 hit singles that have since followed, along with a few tracks from last year’s “Bigger Houses” album.

While Dan + Shay do occasionally mention alcohol in their songs — their biggest hit and perennial show-closer is 2018’s “Tequila” — they have little in common with the bro country that has been clogging up the charts over the past decade. The duo come across more like a 21st century Hall and Oates with a slight twang than peers of Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton and Jason Aldean. (In October 2022, Mooney took to Instagram to announce he had lost 50 pounds in large part due to cutting booze and sugar out of his diet. Friday, Smyers cracked a gentle joke about Mooney showing off his abs to the crowd.)

These guys sing about falling in love, getting married and feeling gratitude. The selections they played Friday say it all: “Alone Together,” “All of Myself,” “Show You Off,” “Heaven + Back,” “Nothin’ Like You,” “Glad You Exist” and so on.

The most overtly country song of the night, “We Should Get Married,” would have been the highlight of a night of line dancing at a ’90s country bar. They followed it with “From the Ground Up” and Mooney almost teared up as he told the crowd the song was inspired by the love shared by the pair’s grandparents. As he did several times throughout the night, he showered the audience with praise: “Thank you for changing our lives every single day!”

Yes, Dan + Shay’s endless cheer and claims that Twin Cities crowds are the greatest ever can start to feel forced. It was also a bit over-the-top when Mooney almost broke into tears a second time. But they clearly know what they’re doing and what their followers want from them. If nothing else, it was a pleasure watching them barrel through a cover of the Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” with more energy and verve than I’ve ever seen from the band that wrote it.
