AVONDALE, La. — With fried oysters and crawfish served on the driving range and gumbo simmering in hospitality areas, no stop on the PGA Tour packs more flavor than the Zurich Classic of New Orleans at TPC Louisiana.

The first shots of this year’s tournament will be hit on Thursday, the same day as the start of New Orleans Jazz Fest, and with the weather forecast calling for sunshine and warm temperatures to last through the week, the whole Bayou is primed for another party.

With its blend of Creole, Cajun, Spanish and West African influences, New Orleans is one of America’s unique cities, so it is fitting that this tournament has been unique on the PGA Tour schedule for the last seven years.

Starting in 2014, the Zurich has been the PGA Tour’s only two-man team event. Highlighting the field this year is an Irish duo, Ryder Cup stars Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, along with the defending champions, Davis Riley and Nick Hardy, and the 2022 winners, American Ryder Cup standouts Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay.

ZURICH : 10 teams to watch | Thursday tee times

“We started as a team at the Presidents Cup in Australia (in 2019),” Cantlay said after playing some practice holes with Schauffele on Tuesday afternoon. “Fred Couples and Tiger Woods put us together. They thought that with both of us being from California and being a similar age that we’d make a good pairing. We had a great time that week and won some pivotal matches.”

Instead of the typical 72-hole, stroke-play format used at nearly all PGA Tour events, the Zurich Classic features 18 holes of four-ball (commonly referred to as best ball) in the first and third rounds, with each golfer playing his ball and the lowest score counting for that hole. In the second and fourth rounds, the format changes to 18 holes of foursomes, which is often referred to as alternate shot. In those rounds, players will take turns hitting the same ball, which invariably ratchets up the pressure because no one wants to hit a bad shot and leave his partner in a tough spot.

Standing in the shade behind the 18th hole’s grandstands Tuesday, Schauffele could not remember an instance of Cantlay putting him in a bad spot during alternate shot. However, he remarked that Cantlay had bailed him out several times after Schauffele felt he hit a less-than-great shot.

“Patrick is such a good chipper and it’s so hard around here,” Schauffele said. “There’ve been several times when he’ll leave me in a green-light spot, when you’ll get up-and-down 80 percent of the time or more, and then I’ll hit it to like 7 feet. Deep down, I know that he’d hit it to 2 feet or a tap in. Even the year we won, there were three or four holes in a row when he hit me to tap-in range. We’ll smile and start laughing, then I’d hit it to like 8 feet and he’d make the 8-footer.”

New Orleans has hosted Super Bowls and Final Fours and annually is home to massive Mardi Gras parades. Bourbon Street is probably the most “well hydrated” 13 blocks in the United States. If you want a great meal and a good time, this is the place to be. But, with more than $1.2 million going to each member of the winning team, along with a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour, entry into the three remaining signature events and 400 FedEx Cup points, the party needs to be put on hold. And, in some ways, this week is a first audition for bigger things to come this fall.

“It’s a warm-up, of sorts,” Schauffele said. “Pat and I have been around each other for several years, competing on teams together, and it’s always a goal for both of us to qualify for Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups. This is a nice warm-up.”

Travelers Championship

Xander Schauffele (finally) ends his PGA Tour victory drought, but not without a little luck

1405297343

Tim Nwachukwu

Ask any golfer who has ever won a PGA Tour event and they’ll tell you that to ring that bell, you almost always need a little bit of luck. Sometimes you need a lot. What they don't tell you is that sometimes, you need bad luck to lose.

On a normal Sunday, Schauffele's first individual PGA Tour win in more than three years (in the interim, he won the Zurich Classic paired with Patrick Cantlay, and the Olympic gold medal) would be the story of the day. However, when the final putt fell at the Travelers Championship, there was no question that the most memorable moment belonged not to the winner, but to Sahith Theegala, who finished in a tie for second.

MORE: The clubs Xander Schauffele used to win the Travelers

After draining an impressive 10-foot birdie putt on 17 to take a one-shot lead on Schauffele, Theegala, a 24-year-old former college player of the year at Pepperdine turned tour rookie, hit a drive on 18 at TPC River Highlands that didn't cut the way he wanted, and got the worst possible break when the ball ran through a bunker to the very front edge. He had a decision to make; rather than play passively, risk bogey and watch his dream of a first tour win evaporate with a Schauffele birdie, he judged that he had enough room to clear the lip and keep the pressure on his opponent behind him.

So, with Schauffele looking on from the tee, Theegala took a crack at the most difficult option, and when the cloud of sand had cleared … the ball was almost right where he left it.

Theegala played it safer then, and hit a solid pitch to 12 feet to give himself a bogey look. Then, as if the sand fiasco wasn't enough heartbreak for one hole, this happened:

Schauffele had already striped his drive 338 yards down the right side of the fairway, and with that double bogey from Theegala, it was all over—he simply had to reach the green from 105 yards away and two-putt. He did better, making birdie to reach 19 under and win by the deceptive margin of two shots.

The pain is doubly acute for Theegala because of how well he played the rest of the round. Coming off a 64 on Saturday, he played bogey free through 17 holes, holing two long putts on the front nine to go out in 33, and dialing in his best play for the closing stretch by making a tap-in birdie on the par-5 13th, driving the green on the par-4 15th, and then burying the clutch 10-footer on 17 that seemed to give him the edge he'd need to win. Everything seemed to be building to a Sunday tour de force for a guy who had every right to feel nervous, and then it all blew up.

"Never in a million years did I think I would allow myself to blade it," Theegala said afterward. "All I had to do was chunk it. We even said, like, this is a 50/50 ball in terms of I got to try and just basically hit it just a hair behind it. Somehow my body just, I just straight bladed it. I had room there. I don't know how it looked, but I had room there. Just didn't think I would let myself blade it. But I guess the moment was...and then from there it's, like, got to try and make 5 now. Had a little more room. And I did the same thought process. I nearly bladed it again."

MORE: The prize money payouts from the Travelers

On social media, where Theegala had generated a good deal of buzz Sunday, there were rampant questions about the choice to use driver (same with the CBS broadcast booth), the aggression in the sand, and the general mindset on 18. Theegala, however, stood by his play when asked what he might do differently if given a second chance.

"Nothing," he said. "I did everything I thought I had to do, and it just happened to be everything bad culminated on one hole."

Michael Reaves

Schauffele, the 54-hole leader, was playing with Cantlay, his friend and partner from both the Ryder Cup and the Zurich Classic. Cantlay's day quickly developed into a nightmare, with three birdies in his first four holes, and it never got much better. After starting one off the lead, he finished with a 76, the second-worst score on the course Sunday, but it didn't seem to faze Schauffele. He was steady, if unspectacular, atoning for a bogey on 2 with a 15-foot birdie on 4 and a 10-footer on 6. It was mostly pars from there on out, and the final birdie on 18 gave him a two-under 68 on the day.

It's an important win for Schauffele, who has been a top-15 player in the world for years now (his highest ranking was fourth, though he has slipped over the past year), but who, despite winning that gold medal in Tokyo and his pairs successes, had begun to develop a reputation for coming up short on Sundays (he was 0-for-4 in his career previously when trying to convert a 54-hole lead into a W). When a moderator joked with him in the post-round interview about how long it had been since his last win, he responded, "don't remind me."

"It feels really good," he said of his long-awaited triumph. "Everyone talks about how hard it is, and I only had the Olympics to sort of fall back on having a [54-hole] lead and kind of closing it. I've never done it on the PGA Tour. ... I mean to do it in Japan and then sort of have that experience, I really tapped into that today."

He spoke about staying in the moment, and how that hasn't always been his best skill.

1405294348

Schauffele didn't need any reminding that he hadn't won an individual title on the PGA Tour since the 2019 Sentry Tournament of Champions.

"I think it's probably something that's been more developed," he said. "I haven't really had a hard time focusing growing up. My wife tells me I'm the worst multi-tasker on the planet, so that usually bodes well if you can only focus on one thing. I think in the past when I had 54-hole leads or close to the lead, my Sundays feel really fast. And I'd be kind of sitting back in the hotel or at a house on Sunday sort of thinking, 'what happened today?'"

Schuaffele adjusted this week by attempting what so many professional golfers strive for and fail to achieve, which is the simple task of staying present and bringing full attention to every shot. He told his caddie Austin Kaiser to hold him accountable, and together they dialed in early and did enough to win.

Nearly lost in the late drama was the incredible performance of the 20-year-old amateur Michael Thorbjornsen, the 2019 U.S. Junior Amateur winner and rising junior at Stanford who made the field on a sponsor's exemption after playing in the U.S. Open last week . He was the 2021 Massachusetts Amateur champion and playing in front of a home New England crowd in Cromwell, Conn. Not only did he make the cut (after an MC at The Country Club), but came closer than most predicted from winning the whole thing. A front-nine 31 on Sunday had him crawling up the leaderboard, and he followed that with two straight birdies on 10 and 11 to move just one back of Schuaffele. He finally cooled off, making bogey on 12 and 13 before five straight pars to end his round, but the final result was 15 under and solo fourth. That's the highest finish for an amateur at the Travelers Championship.

"It was incredible," he said. "It was surreal. ... It's better than how I dreamt about it. It's so loud. It was very welcoming. I can't wait to come back next year and the following years."

Rory McIlroy, who co-led after a first-round 62, which ended up being tied with J.T. Poston for the best score of the week, followed two days of fading with a Sunday 67 to finish T-19. Poston fared better, closing with a 64 to tie Theegala for second. It's Poston's best finish on tour since a solo second at the 2021 Barbasol Championship.

The lingering image for this year's Travelers, though, will be Theegala's shot out of the sand on 18, and though he'll do his best to put it behind him—he seems to have very few regrets, which is a good start—he did let the armor down for a moment when a journalist asked if he was still in shock.

"I don't know what ... yeah," he said. "I don't know what you want. Do you want me to say no to that? Yes, I am. Thank you."

When the bad luck hits, and it's this expensive, it's hard to figure out how to be anything but dazed.

Xander Schauffele

world number

PGA golfer and California native Xander Schauffele joined the professional scene in 2015. After becoming the first rookie in history to win the PGA Tour Championship Xander was voted “rookie of the year 2017” by his peers on the PGA Tour.

xander schauffele pga tour stats

His father, a graduate of San Diego Golf Academy (now Golf Academy of America), encouraged his interest and to this day is his only swing coach. Schauffele played golf for Scripps Ranch High School, then Long Beach State University and San Diego State University.

Among other early accolades, he won the individual title of the 2011 California State High School Championship and is the 2014 California State Amateur champion.

He began his college career at Long Beach State University under then coach Ryan Ressa. There, Xander garnered Big West Conference Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Big West awards in 2012.

For his sophomore year Xander transferred to San Diego State University to play for the SDSU Aztecs, where he still holds several seasonal and career records. After graduating with a degree in Social Sciences in 2015, Xander played Web.com Q-School that same fall.  There he succeeded in securing playing privileges for the 2016 Web.com Tour season.

After a solid first season on the Web.com Tour, Xander finished in 26th position at the end of regular season play, a mere US$ 900.00 short of earning a PGA Tour card.

xander schauffele pga tour stats

Xander finished his first PGA Tour season with a solid run beginning with a T5 at the 2017 US Open and ending with being the first ever rookie to win the PGA Tour Championship.

His 2-win season (2017 Greenbrier Classic; 2017 Tour Championship) earned Xander the Rookie of the Year award for the 2016-2017 season.

On October 28, 2018, Schauffele won the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai, China at the Sheshan Golf Club. Schauffele won on the first playoff hole (number 18), defeating Tony Finau.

On January 6, 2019, Schauffele won the Sentry Tournament of Champions at The Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort in Maui, Hawaii. He shot 11-under-par 62 in the final round to pass Gary Woodland, who held a 5-shot lead on Schauffele entering the final round. Schauffele’s final round 62 tied the course record at The Plantation Course. He is tied with K. J. Choi (2003), Graeme McDowell (2011), Chris Kirk (2015) and Jason Day (2015).

In early August 2019, Schauffele placed 4th in the inaugural 2019 Wyndham Rewards Top 10, thus entering the 2019 Playoffs in 4th position in the FedEx Cup rankings. In accordance with the new 2019 playoff format, Schauffele found himself in 8th position after the first two of a total of three playoff events and arrived at East Lake Golf Club for the playing of the 2019 Tour Championship with a 6 shot deficit to initially #1 positioned Justin Thomas. Schauffele was able to erase the deficit after the very first round with a score of 6-under-par 64 and was tied for the lead going into Friday. On Sunday August 25, Schauffele finished out the season with a solo second place at the 2019 Tour Championship, which also placed him in a solo second position in the 2019 FedEx Cup – his highest finish to date.

In December 2019, Schauffele played on the U.S. team at the 2019 Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia. The U.S. team won 16–14. Schauffele went 3-2-0 and won his Sunday singles match against International team star and veteran Adam Scott. Some in golf media called Schauffele the “unsung hero” of the U.S. team.

On August 1-st 2022, Schauffele recorded a final-round of 67 to win the Olympic gold medal. He made an up-and-down for par on the last hole to beat Slovakian Rory Sabbatini by one shot. With the accomplishment, Schauffele became the first American since 1900 to win an Olympic gold medal in golf.

In September 2021, Schauffele played on the U.S. team in the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin. The U.S. team won 19–9.

In April, Schauffele won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a team event, with playing partner Patrick Cantlay. In June, he won the Travelers Championship for his sixth PGA Tour victory. In July, he won the J. P. McManus Pro-Am, an unofficial event on the European Tour held at Adare Manor, after shooting a course record 64 in the first round. The same week he won the co-sanctioned Genesis Scottish Open played at the Renaissance Club in East Lothian, Scotland. It was his third PGA Tour victory in the 2021–22 season, and his seventh overall.

Schauffele qualified for the U.S. team at the 2022 Presidents Cup; he won three and lost one of the four matches he played.

F-2: From the 2023 U.S. Open, the low 10 scorers and ties F-11: Those players who qualified and were eligible for the 2023 season-ending Tour Championship

Schauffele carded a final-round 67 to capture the gold medal in the rescheduled Olympic competition in the summer of 2021 in Tokyo. The 2020 Games were pushed back one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Schauffele has been a model of consistency in his seven U.S. Open starts that includes a share of third in 2019 at Pebble Beach and a tie for fifth in his debut at Erin Hills in 2017. That finish popelled the former San Diego State standout to rookie-of-the-year honors on the PGA Tour. Schauffele now owns seven PGA Tour victories, including the season-ending Tour Championship in 2017, the 2022 Travelers Championship and 2022 Genesis Scottish Open. He was the runner-up to Tiger Woods in the 2019 Masters, his best finish in a major. Schauffele enjoyed a distinguished amateur career that included winning the 2014 California State Amateur, and the 2010 California State High School titles. Started college career at Long Beach State and was the 2012 Big West Conference Freshman of the Year before transferring to San Diego State to play his final three seasons. Still holds a number of SDSU records, including all-time scoring average (71.50) and lowest tournament score in relation to par (-17). One of his teammates at SDSU was 2014 U.S. Amateur champion Gunn Yang. Born to German/French naturalized immigrant father and a Chinese Taipei/Japanese naturalized immigrant mother. His great-grandfathers were both talented athletes. Johann Hoffmann (soccer) won multiple Bohemian, Austrian and French titles, while Richard Schauffele excelled in soccer and track and field, garnering more than 40 titles in discus, javelin and the shot put. Member of the victorious 2019 and 2021 U.S. Presidents Cup and 2021 Ryder Cup teams. Also a member of the 2023 Ryder Cup Team.

Turned professional in 2015 after enjoying a successful amateur and collegiate career. He earned his place on the PGA TOUR for 2016-17 after finishing 15th on the now-Korn Ferry Tour Finals list.

Recorded his first PGA TOUR victory at the 2017 Greenbrier Classic, three weeks after finishing in a share of fifth place at the U.S. Open at Erin Hills. His second title quickly followed as he won that season’s Tour Championship at East Lake, becoming the first rookie to win the PGA TOUR’s end of season event. He was subsequently voted PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year for 2017.

Won his first DP World Tour title with victory at the WGC-HSBC Champions in October 2018, defeating Tony Finau on the first play-off hole. That victory, along with a share of second place at The 147th Open Championship and a top 20 finish at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, helped him seal fourth place in the 2018 Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex.

He won the 2019 Sentry Tournament of Champions and he also went on to win the Gold Medal at the rescheduled Tokyo Olympic Games, finishing one stroke ahead of Rory Sabbatini of Slovakia.

Won the 2022 Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside close friend Patrick Cantlay and then won three times in the space of three starts later that year at the Travelers Championship, JP McManus Invitational and Genesis Scottish Open, his first Rolex Series title.

Represented the United States at the 2019 Presidents Cup and was a Captain’s Pick for the rescheduled 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits where he won three points from four matches.
