Hailing from Albany, Western Australia, The Waifs are a folk rock act who found huge success in their native country, as well as co-founding the independent label, Jarrah Records, along with John Butler and manager Phil Stevens.

Initially beginning life as a duo, the Simpson sisters, Donna and Vikki, formed the act Colours, starting out playing Bob Dylan and Everly Brothers covers at their local pubs. The sisters toured constantly over several years in a small Kombi van, during which they met guitarist Josh Cunningham, who joined the duo after an impromptu jam session. Changing their name to The Waifs, the trio continued to tour the country from 1992-1996, gaining many fans along the way.

The group decided to head to Melbourne, Australia to record their self-titled debut, which was released in 1996. Two more albums followed shorty after, 1998's "Shelter Me" and 2000's " Sink or Swim, whilst continuing to tour relentlessly. The band also found a growing popularity in the US and Canada, finding legions of fans of their gentle harmonies and wholesome folk, with The Waifs making several festival appearances in that hemisphere.

Having hired Phil Stevens as their band manager, The Waifs were put in touch with John Butler, soon creating the independent label, Jarrah Records. Their fourth record, "Up All Night," arrived shortly after in 2003, bringing the band massive commercial success in Australia, becoming certified double-Platinum. The Waifs rounded out that year winning several awards at the ARIA Music Awards before then heading back out to tour.

"Sun Dirt Water" in 2007 was their next offering of new music, peaking at number two in the charts. "Temptation" followed suit in 2011, reaching the number three spot, continuing to find The Waifs critical and commercial success. With the band members separated due to living with their respective partners, making new music proved difficult, with Cunningham going solo in 2011, releasing his debut effort, "Into Tomorrow."

Live reviews

Australian folk rock band The Waifs have a sound as laidback as a late winter afternoon in front of a hearth, watching the last tongues of a once-roaring fire die down to gentle ashes. Their sound is rich and warm without being showy. It’s a sound that is genuine and also a delight to listen to for hours on end.

The group, formed of Josh Cunningham and sisters Vicki and Donna Simpson, put their soul into their melodies and lyrics so that their songs bleed emotion. Vicki’s voice in particular is lush and warm, reminiscent of Norah Jones in places. With their combined talent it’s no surprise that The Waifs were asked to support Bob Dylan during his 2003 Australian and North American tour.

The Waifs know that a live show has to be about the music first and foremost, and for that reason they keep their shows low-key and avoid the clutter and distraction of lighting sequences or big productions. What the band does add in when touring is musicians Ben Franz on the bass and David Ross Macdonald on drums, to round out their sound in the best possible way. The band’s hit “London Still” is always present on any set list, but also listen out for “Lighthouse” and “Fisherman’s Daughter” as they are real gems when showcased live.

This is the 3rd time I have seen the Waifs in Canberra as they are one of my favourite bands. The 2 gigs Ive been to previously were amazing!!!This was their 25th anniversary tour and I thought it would be full of their old stuff where the croud would stomp n sing all the way through. New songs I wasnt real interested in as I know I'd be going to their next tour for that. For a 25th tour song choices could of been better by leaving out some new stuff.Their cool and entertaining and have great songsand sound. To be honest didnt like the girl on before them it was long and depressing.

Vick sung Gillian to quick just probly wanted to go home.

I Love the Waifs and it was still a good show but rated it a 6 out of 10 when the other 2 I gave 10

FABULOUS AS ALWAYS!I think they improve with each show. The singing is so heartfelt and strong, and the genuine love they have for their fans, shows through. The highlight for me waswhen the show ended,Vicki cameback out and jumped from the stage and had her photo taken with a guy wearing a Waif's shirt.Adorable!!

Superb again. Whilst the Waifs are super relaxed and professional they still manage to be fresh and engaging. Top quality musicianship, particularly Josh, wonderful voices and mix of old and new songs - varied and beautiful.

Mia Dyson was the warm up and could have been a joint headline - fantastic.

‘We keep our money in a sock!’: the Waifs on 30 years of fights, fame and batting off record labels

B ack in the 1990s, Donna Simpson had a system for getting the Waifs’ albums in shops. She’d call up the record stores of every small town the band was set to play in and ask if they would stock their CDs on commission. Then, with just a little subterfuge, she’d even convince the big chains to buy their music.

“I was getting them into Kmart all on my own by pretending that I was calling from the Waifs’ office, which was actually my bedroom floor,” Simpson remembers. “I had thousands of CDs stacked up, I had my own shopping trolley, and I’d buy express post bags and bubble wrap in bulk. I’d be walking through the street in Bondi with my trolley full of post bags.”

As her sister and bandmate Vikki Thorn sees it, this is basically the entire story of the Waifs.

“The reason the band exists is because Donna is this kind of person,” Thorn says, speaking over Zoom alongside Simpson and Waifs guitarist Josh Cunningham. “When we were at school, Donna had the idea to go around Australia and play music. We’d been playing music in the local pub, [and] I don’t think we were particularly great at what we did. But she has this can-do attitude … and that attitude carried us through and really created that independent spirit.”

The Waifs have now been together for 30 years and are still every bit as independent as they were back in the beginning, when Simpson and Thorn met Cunningham at a pub in Broome and asked him to ditch his band to join theirs. (Thorn and Cunningham soon started dating and were together for 12 years before splitting up – but remaining bandmates.) In that time, they’ve never really stopped – just slowed. Simpson now describes them as “FIFO musicians” who come together from their disparate bases around Australia to perform every now and then, spending the bulk of their time raising their children, working on other projects, mentoring upcoming artists and, in Simpson’s case, doing “a lot of gardening”.

But later this year the band are reuniting for a comprehensive 40-date Australian tour to mark the 20th anniversary of their breakthrough album, the earthy and unfussed folk-rock classic Up All Night. As well as the big cities, they’re hitting everywhere from Ballarat to Broken Hill – the sort of small towns reminiscent of their early marathon tours.

And while those years of nonstop touring weren’t always easy – “there was a lot of fighting back in the day,” Simpson says, including the time she walked up and “walloped” Thorn with a tambourine on stage – Up All Night is a worthy reason to get back on the road. That LP achieved double platinum certification, won four Aria awards, and hit No 3 on the Triple J Hottest 100 with the single London Still, a quintessentially Australian ode to missing home from afar.

The trio often disagree about how certain moments in their three-decade career went down: “Can you imagine if the police ever tried to interrogate us about something that happened? They’d just give up,” Simpson laughs. But one thing they’re sure of is the absurdity of how the Waifs were branded an “overnight success” after Up All Night stormed the charts. The album introduced them to a wider audience, but they had already been playing together for 10 years at that point and had put out two previous albums.

“We’d been on tour for so long and so intensively,” says Thorn, “that we had this weariness about us. And I think that’s what made the album pop – because we stopped caring so much.”

The Waifs performing in 2005

The other big factor in that album’s success was that for the first time the Waifs had brought on a manager, Phil Stevens. Up until that point, the band had been suspicious of those who approached them about management. When the well-connected Stevens came on board, they made it clear certain things were not going to change.

“[We said], we’re not interested in a record deal,” Thorn remembers. “We’ve already established ourselves as recording artists in Australia –”

“We keep our money in a sock, not the bank,” Simpson interjects.

“Yeah, we paid for the recording [of Up All Night] in LA by sitting on the floor in the studio and pulling out the sock of money,” Thorn says.

The sock full of cash – or, in boom times, multiple socks – came with the band everywhere. Occasionally they were misplaced; left in the bathroom of a bar or lost somewhere in Sydney airport after a long-haul flight.

“We were driving to a gig one time and I stopped suddenly at a stoplight. This thing came sliding down the windscreen and landed on the bottom of the car. And it was the sock,” Cunningham remembers.

after newsletter promotion

The rest of their operation was equally as ad hoc. In their early years, Cunningham booked the gigs, Thorn handled press, and Simpson, of course, did distribution, stuffing the van full of CDs.

“One time we were driving through Albury-Wodonga – remember how the back of the tour van would never close?” Simpson says, addressing Thorn and Cunningham. “And thousands and thousands of CDs all fell out right in the middle of this intersection, smashed all over the road and held up traffic. We picked them up and tried to package them and sell them anyway.”

She even put their phone number on the back of CDs – which led to calls from both fans who couldn’t believe it was actually the band when they answered, plus the odd label which tried – and failed – to nab a slice of their success.

“I remember a record company called us up, and I said to them, what can you do for us that we can’t do for ourselves?” Simpson says. “He said, we can get you $2.30 per album profit. And I said, well, we’re actually making $20 per album profit. And we have a sock! So you can get fucked.”

Their independence meant they were somewhat unprepared for the tremendous success of Up All Night. The band had relocated overseas prior to its release and would check their email occasionally to see notes from friends saying they’d heard London Still on the radio.

Vikki Thorn, Josh Cunningham and Donna Simpson on St Kilda beach in 2002

“And I would think, ‘oh yeah, three in the morning on ABC’,” Simpson recalls. “I had no idea that it was getting played so much until we returned to Australia and then everything just went bang.”

Suddenly, everyone was watching. “Our publicist Stacey was horrified that I wanted to wear my op shop pants on the Arias red carpet,” Thorn adds. “They had a hole in the bum. She sewed up the hole before [we went].”

In the years that followed, the band kept going as they had before – just with a little more financial freedom – and released four more studio albums while endlessly touring. “We went out and played all over Australia,” Simpson says. “We never relied on – and you can’t rely on – just radio and word of mouth. You can’t. You’ve got to get out and do the hard yards and tour.”

It was an easy decision to get back on the road for Up All Night. But as significant as the release was on paper, it didn’t change the marrow of who the Waifs are.

“We didn’t ever really aspire to hit fame or the big time,” says Cunningham. “We were just travelling around, having an adventure and playing music … We got more accolades and more notoriety [after Up All Night]. But what got us there hadn’t changed.”

The Waifs are touring Australia with guests including Josh Pyke, Mick Thomas, Jeff Lang, and an appearance in Melbourne by Missy Higgins, 1 June – 24 September

The Waifs add more dates to their enormous Up All Night 20th anniversary tour

Five members of The Waifs arm in arm outside in front of a big white marquee

  • X (formerly Twitter)

Up All Night , the fourth album from Australian folk mainstays The Waifs , is indisputably one of the classic Australian albums of the 2000s.

The impact and influence of many of its songs continues to resonate to this day, with tracks like 'London Still', 'Lighthouse', 'Fisherman's Daughter' and 'Highway One' among the band's most celebrated work.

The 20th anniversary of that album's release was this past January, and the band are not letting this milestone go without a monumental celebration.

The Waifs will do what they do best in celebration of this anniversary: they're hitting the road.

They're not doing the typical dash through capital cities and major regional areas, though. They're doing it the way The Waifs have so commonly toured: hitting towns and cities of all sizes on a massive run around the country.

UPDATE: Hitting the halfway point of their nearly sold out tour, the band have added new dates for fans in Geelong - in November with Melbourne folk trio  The Maes  - and Fremantle, with special guest  Josh Pyke . Check them out below.

We can't even begin to go through all the dates – you'll find them all listed below – but we have to talk about the support acts that they've enlisted.

For their Melbourne show at the Palais Theatre in early June, The Waifs have dusted off their rolodex and called the young woman who supported them on the initial Up All Night tour 20 years ago.

Her name is Missy Higgins , and it will be nice to see what she's been up to after all these years.

Australian blues legend Jeff Lang joins them for some dates, indie-folk master Josh Pyke is there for others.

Close friend of the band and Weddings Parties Anything frontman Mick Thomas joins in for a few legs, while Americana prodigal son Jordie Lane pops back to Australia for a couple of others.

The Waifs' guitarist Josh Cunningham pulls double-duty at some shows, playing support alongside his partner Felicity Urquhart , and the always incredible Liz Stringer helps bring things home when she joins the band over in Western Australia.

Among the many tour dates are appearances at the Big Red Bash and the Mundi Mundi Bash in remote Australia, but the rest of the shows will feature The Waifs in full headline mode.

On the tour, you'll get to hear Up All Night in full, but you'll also get a handful of fan favourites to bolster the set. It's going to be very special.

Here's the full list of dates. There are a lot of them. Tickets are on sale now.

Riding the wave of her new album, Taylor Swift is set to resume her megapopular North American tour in October 2024 including stops around the Midwest.

Here’s how you can get hard-to-find tickets for 2024 shows in Miami, New Orleans, and Indianapolis at Stubhub and Vivid Seats.

Swifties who want to snag tickets to Taylor Swift’s colossal Eras Tour know the experience won’t come cheap.

This year, the billionaire will only visit three U.S. cities – Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis – and prices for the in-demand shows are astronomical . For the Oct. 18 show in Miami, for example, cost of a single ticket ranged between $1,615 and $8,524 on StubHub.com as of Wednesday afternoon.

So, how else can fans see one of the world’s biggest singers? Go abroad .

In the past 30 days, searches for ‘Taylor Swift Europe tour 2024 tickets’ have increased by 300% in the U.S., indicating that some people are ready to take a long-haul flight to see the wildly popular artist live, according to travel website Islands.com .

Concert-goers who head to Europe for their Swift experience may actually save more money in the long-run . Not only are ticket prices across the pond cheaper, but many European cities, like Warsaw and Lisbon, are also budget-friendly, offering inexpensive food and lodging.

To determine the most affordable Eras Tour stops, Islands.com researchers compared the cost of a two-night trip, including one cheap ticket on StubHub.com, two nights at a four-star hotel, six inexpensive meals, two five-mile taxi rides, and one domestic beer. However, researchers didn’t account for airline tickets or concert merchandise.

With safety at the top of travelers' minds, the researchers also factored in the city’s safety rating out of 100.

Taylor Swift shares big video hint the ‘Eras Tour' may be changing

“taylor swift, you have some explaining to do” wrote one fan., by amy eley | today • published april 25, 2024 • updated on april 25, 2024 at 9:10 pm.

Taylor Swift is taking fans behind the scenes of her “Eras Tour” with a series of clips, and Swifties now suspect there’s a hint as to changes coming to the world-renowned show.

Days after releasing her newest album,  “The Tortured Poets Department,”  Swift posted another YouTube Short video with her hit single “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone,” playing over videos of her and her dancers rehearsing for the tour. But there’s one moment in the montage that has fans doing what they do best: speculating.

Fans will recognize many of the scenes being practiced, such as Swift's iconic entrance from the ground, her performance of "Lavender Haze" in a coat surrounded by clouds, playing "Champagne Problems" seated at a moss-covered piano and more. But one clip, in which Swift stands in the middle of a stage with her dancers lined up behind her wearing top hats and holding canes, did not appear in the original "Eras Tour."

We're making it easier for you to find stories that matter with our new newsletter — The 4Front. Sign up here and get news that is important for you to your inbox.

“Since when do background dancers have a top hat and canes?!” one fan with the username armaisacat.1989  captioned a TikTok  of the scene, adding “Taylor Swift you have some explaining to do!!”

The “Eras Tour” is a three-hour, 15-minute concert in which Swift performs songs from all of her albums since her 2006 self-titled debut record. Many — including the TODAY.com staff — have speculated whether or not the pop star would integrate “Tortured Poets Department” as another era in the show.

All will be (hopefully) be revealed when the tour begins again in Paris on May 9.

By the numbers: Statistics confirm Scottie Scheffler's historical dominance

Change Text Size

Is impending fatherhood the only thing stopping Scottie Scheffler? Quite possibly.

His historic run continued Monday when he completed his victory at the RBC Heritage. It was his fourth win in his past five starts, a run that also included victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, THE PLAYERS Championship and the Masters. The only exception was a runner-up finish at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, where he missed a 6-footer to join Stephan Jaeger in a playoff.

Scottie Scheffler’s Round 4 highlights From RBC Heritage

Scheffler has seemed invincible lately, and the statistics confirm that. Here’s a closer look at some of the key stats that put Scheffler’s historic play into perspective:

  • By winning at Harbour Town Golf Links, Scheffler became the first player since Bernhard Langer in 1985 to win the RBC Heritage one week after winning the Masters .
  • Scheffler is the first player since Tiger Woods in 2006 to win the week after winning a major .
  • With four wins and a runner-up in his past five starts, Scheffler is the first player since Woods in 2007-08 to have five consecutive top-two finishes . Vijay Singh is the only other player to have such a run in the past 30 years (2004).
  • This was Scheffler’s 10th PGA TOUR victory, coming in just his 51st start since he earned his first win at the 2022 WM Phoenix Open. Only David Duval has needed fewer starts after his first win to reach victory No. 10. Duval did it in 33 starts. Tiger Woods is third on the list with 59 starts.
  • In his 51 starts since the 2022 WM Phoenix Open, Scheffler also has 23 top-three finishes (45%) and 35 top-10s (68.6%).
  • All 10 of Scheffler’s wins have come since the start of the 2021-22 season. He is the first player to win 10 (or more) times on the PGA TOUR in the span of three seasons since Dustin Johnson won 10 titles between 2015-16 and 2017-18.
  • This is Scheffler’s fourth win of the season, matching his career-high from 2022. He is the fourth player with multiple four-win seasons since the start of 2000 , joining Woods (10), Singh, (3) and Phil Mickelson (2).
  • Scheffler has now recorded 40 consecutive TOUR rounds at par or better , a streak that began in the final round of the 2023 TOUR Championship. He’s 12 back of Woods’ all-time TOUR mark of 52 straight rounds at par or better (set across 2000-01).
  • In each of Scheffler’s last seven victories, eight or more of the top 10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking have been in the field . His most recent run of four wins in five starts has included two Signature Events (Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, RBC Heritage), THE PLAYERS and the Masters.
  • Scheffler is averaging 5.38 birdies per round this season, on pace to set the all-time TOUR record for single-season birdie average (since the statistic was first tracked in 1980) . Woods set the current record (4.92) in 2020.
  • In his 39 rounds this season, he has outperformed the field average 35 times . He’s been at least a shot better than the field 30 times, at least two shots better 26 times and at least three shots better 19 times.
  • Scheffler leads the TOUR in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green by nearly a shot per round this season , after finishing atop the category by more than two-thirds of a stroke per round last season. No player had previously led the category by more than four-tenths of a stroke per round since Woods in 2009.
