Campus Tours

Campus Tour

One of the primary missions of the Office of Admissions and the University Ambassadors organization is to provide campus tours for prospective students and their parents.

Regular Tours

Campus tours leave from the Davis-Harrington Welcome Center at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays throughout the fall and spring semesters and noon over the summer. Tours usually last between one-and-a-half and two hours and are mainly walking tours. Campus tours include academic buildings, classrooms, residence halls, recreational facilities and other areas of special interest. For more information regarding campus tours and the campus visit program, visit the Campus Tour web page.

Groups visits

We are occasionally asked to provide Ambassadors for special tours for visiting groups such as students who are on campus for special programs or visiting high school groups. We welcome the opportunity to assist with such groups. The University Ambassadors have an elected Vice President of Group Visits who assists with the scheduling of these tours. For more information regarding special campus tours please visit the Group Visit web page.

Nothing can compare to an in-person visit of Southeast Missouri State University.

When we ask our students why they chose Southeast, they always say, "when I visited, I just fell in love." A campus tour is the perfect way to see the beauty of the campus that overlooks the Mississippi from atop the hill. With a mix of history and modern amenities, Southeast is the place to build a home. You have to see it.

MU marks return of the Museum of Art and Archaeology and the Museum of Anthropology

mo state campus visit

After spending time in exile, the Museum of Art and Archaeology and the Museum of Anthropology are home at the University of Missouri campus, in the lower level of Ellis Library.

The space was once occupied by the State Historical Society of Missouri , but it now has its own building on Elm Street.

They both had been at Mizzou North, on the Business Loop , but university officials decided to demolish the building. The Museum of Art and Archaeology closed in summer 2021, while the Museum of Anthropology closed in October 2021.

The museums open May 3, though the Museum of Art and Archaeology from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday will pair works of art with fresh flower displays by local florists with Art in Bloom.

The Museum of Anthropology opening celebration is 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. May 2.

Regular museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.

Museum officials on Monday took reporters and photographers on tours of the renovated space.

"We've moved twice in 10 years," said Candace Sall, director of the Museum of Anthropology.

It's the only anthropology museum in the state, she said.

"We have teamed up with the tribal nations," Sall said. "They are sovereign governments."

The museum worked closely with the Osage nation on an exhibit, Sall said. It will feature explanations in Osage and English.

"We're lucky to have such a good relationship with the Osage nation," Sall said.

There's a child's notebook in another display dating to 1933. The child is learning English by translating verses of the Bible from the child's language, Inupiaq, to English. It's an example of the colonialism of the time, said Jessica Boldt, curator of collections in the Museum of Anthropology.

The anthropology museum contains no human remains or burial items, Boldt said.

There is a collection of ancient shoes from a Missouri cave. The oldest shoe on display is 5,000 years old, but the oldest in its collection is 8,000 years old, Boldt said.

All sixth-graders from Columbia Public Schools are going on tours through the museums at the end of their school year.

In the art and archaeology museum, there's a collection of Rembrandt prints on display through July 28, said museum director Dan Eck.

'We made our journey back to campus," Eck said.

Chemistry classes are performing research on some of the European art, said Rima Girnius, curator of European and American art history. The equipment the students use doesn't touch or damage the artwork and they use the MU Research Reactor for their analysis.

Benton Kidd is curator of antiquities in the Museum of Art and Archaeology. Its highlights include the intact Egyptian mummy shroud of Taathyr, daughter of Thatres, dating to 150 C.E.

There's also a headless clay figurine, dating to 6,000 B.C.E.

The collections from the Museum of Art and Archaeology started in Jesse Hall but were moved to Pickard Hall in 1976. That building was vacated in 2013.

Before opening in Mizzou North in 2017 to join the Museum of Art and Archaeology for the first time, the Museum of Anthropology was in Swallow Hall.

There is a museum store, with proceeds benefiting the museums. Another feature is an Art O Mat, a refurbished cigarette vending machine. With the $5 cost of a token, individuals can purchase an original artwork. Those proceeds benefit the museum and the artists.

"We hope to have some works of local artists soon" in the Art O Mat, said Marie Nau Hunter, deputy director of the Museum of Art and Archaeology.

Missouri Governor Mike Parson and his wife, First Lady Teresa Parson , visited the University of Missouri–St. Louis campus on Tuesday afternoon and took a tour of the newly renovated Geospatial Advanced Technology Lab .

Spot, the robot dog, was waiting to greet them as they arrived around 4:30 p.m., and Chancellor Kristin Sobolik and Geospatial Collaborative Director Reda Amer showed them around the space on the fourth floor of Benton Hall .

First Lady Teresa Parson interacts with Spot, the robot dog, shortly after arriving to tour the newly renovated lab space on the fourth floor of Benton Hall.

The Parsons dropped in to observe a class of students working in the GIS lab – which is equipped with 24 workstations featuring the latest geographic information systems software – and also stepped next door into the virtual reality lab. There, Amer pointed out some of the technology tools on hand, including an interactive table, VR headsets and a drone that can be deployed to gather geospatial data.

“It’s great to be here, and it’s great to see all the new stuff and the renovations you’re doing,” Parson said as he spoke to a room filled with UMSL administrators and members of the Chancellor’s Council in the virtual reality lab. “It’s all been first-class.”

The state-of-the-art facility was built with the help of $1.1 million in funding from the MoExcels Workforce Initiative , one of Parson’s signature programs that he’s championed during his tenure as governor.

“UMSL is absolutely grateful to Governor Parson for his continued support of higher education at the University of Missouri–St. Louis and across the entire University of Missouri System and the state,” Sobolik said during her remarks.

The MoExcels initiative also helped provide funding for the renovation and expansion of UMSL’s Nursing Simulation Laboratories , which was completed in three phases and has helped increase the university’s capacity to train and graduate pre-licensure BSN students as it works to address the nursing shortage in the state.

UMSL also received $1.5 million in MoExcels funding to assist with renovation of existing classrooms and offices in the Kathy J. Weinman Child Advocacy Centre , which provides high-quality, trauma-focused services to youth and families in the St. Louis region.

Parson has also been instrumental in directing funding from the American Rescue Plan Act to UMSL to support the execution of UMSL’s Campus Master Plan . The Transform UMSL initiative includes more than $110 million in public and private investments to reimagine and redefine the campus footprint, preparing it to meet the needs and enhance the experience of future students.

The Geospatial Advanced Technology Lab fits with aims of that initiative and coincides with the growth of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s presence in St. Louis .

“This is all about building the important geospatial workforce in this ecosystem in St. Louis,” Sobolik said. “We have a $1.7 billion NGA expansion here in St. Louis, so we are making sure that we’re developing the workforce for the NGA, their expansion, the supporting businesses, and that growing geospatial ecosystem.”

In 2021, Sobolik joined then-NGA Director Vice Admiral Robert D. Sharp in signing an educational partnership agreement to build a geospatial talent pipeline that supports student learning from kindergarten through college and beyond. As part of the agreement, UMSL faculty and staff are working collaboratively with NGA professionals to develop academic courses and programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics that will provide students the knowledge and skills needed for careers in geospatial intelligence.

Sharp, who retired from his leadership position at NGA in 2022, has since assumed a role as a research fellow at UMSL’s Geospatial Collaborative and is helping lead the development of that talent pipeline.

Gov. Mike Parson (seated) signed copies of his new book and posed for pictures with (from left) Reggie Hill, Reda Amer, Robert Sharp, Chancellor Kristin Sobolik, Blake Sutter and Matt Prsha.

Parson stressed not to lose sight of the real purpose of the state’s investment: creating opportunities for students.

“When we brought NGA here, when we got that done, that’s a whole new ballgame for expansion and for education and for these kids to be able to learn,” Parson said. “Kids that work in places like that, those are good paying jobs.

“As I look at the students in there, I don’t know if they know how lucky they are or not, but they’re going to be pretty lucky when they get done and when they go in the workforce because I guarantee people are going to have a job for them. I’m just so thankful NGA is here and what it is going to mean for the future of our state.”

Parson concluded his visit to UMSL by talking about and signing copies of his recently released biography, “ No Turnin’ Back ,” written with author Jim Jones. Proceeds from the book are going to the Moving Missouri Forward Foundation , a nonprofit that supports Jobs for America’s Graduates–Missouri, children with special needs, and other programs focused on children across Missouri.
