The 6 Best Horse Farm Tours in Lexington, Kentucky
alexeys/Getty Images
Lexington, Kentucky, is known for two things: whiskey and horses. Often referred to as the Horse Capital of the World, the city is home to more than 400 horse farms and the famous Keeneland Race Course (featured in several movies). It has bred more Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown winners than anywhere else in the world. Race fans and equestrians alike flock to Lexington to see how these horses live and train. With so many venues to interact with these horses, it can be hard to
decide where to start. Here is your go-to roundup of the best horse farm tours in Lexington, Kentucky.
Jonabell Farm

Jonabell Farm, home to HH Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation, is one of the most successful breeding sites globally, producing more than 200 stakes-winning racehorses. This tour takes guests through the history and current-day practices of Jonabell, as well as an up-close viewing of their current stallions. A shuttle tour is also available, featuring a scenic drive over Jonabells’ 800 acres of paddocks to see the mares and foals on the farm.
Three Chimneys Farm
TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre
Three Chimneys is one of the most respected stud farms in the business. This tour takes guests through the palatial stables and allows for some facetime with their current horses. The tour continues on to walk visitors through the breeding process and all safety measures that Three Chimneys takes to ensure the health and safety of these prestigious horses. It concludes with a walk around the green paddocks where the horses enjoy acres of land. This scenic farm is an excellent stop for newbies or lifelong fans of the sport.
Claiborne Farm

This 109-year-old farm is often cited as the "Horse Capital of the World." Claiborne Farm boasts 3,000 acres for its prized stallions to run and has been home to 300 sires of champions, 10 Kentucky Derby, and six Triple Crown winners. This tour lets guests view the breeding shed and current horses that call Claiborne home and ends with viewing the famous Secretariat's gravesite. This is a can't-miss for any horse racing fan—in fact, the Queen of England has visited twice!
Denali Stud

Denali Stud is a world-renowned horse farm that has trained a litany of winning horses and has sold more than $500 million worth of horses since 1990. A Denali tour will take guests through their impressive history and current breeding and training practices. In the spring, guests can get up close and personal with the mares and foals, and on lucky days guests have been able to watch foals be born!
New Vocations
Courtesy of New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
Get a unique view of what happens after the racing stops. New Vocations is the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the United States. Focusing on rehabilitation, retraining, and rehoming, this organization saves retired racehorses from an otherwise uncertain future and promotes their use as riding horses, sport horses, or simply great companions. Working with more than 500 horses a year, New Vocations has managed to rehome more than 7,500 horses since its inception in 1992.
While not a farm tour, Keeneland is an absolute must for any equestrian fan visiting Lexington. The famous racetrack is also the largest thoroughbred sale site globally and offers several different tours that take guests behind the scenes of both the racing and sales sides. The horses' morning workouts are free and open to the public, and guests interested in betting during a race can talk to the newly instituted “bet-ologists” who walk newcomers through the wagering process.

A rare opportunity to own an iconic American equine property in the rolling hills of Kentucky.
An amazing stallion complex in the heart of thoroughbred country.
Stonewall Farm is located just outside of Lexington Kentucky and encompasses 262 acres of rich Kentucky bluegrass farmland. The property features a state of the art equine breeding and training facility. The complex was recently re-designed to incorporate new technologies for thoroughbred breeding and sales programs.
As you enter through the complex gates of the farm you are instantly drawn to the lake with jetted fountains and a view of the beautiful Stallion facilities. Traveling up the driveway you approach the main barn complex and vaulted breeding shed. The complex features 13 cedar-lined stalls, vaulted multitier roof system, 4 cupolas with chandeliers, a 33’ x 71’ indoor showing area and stained glass showcases this state-of-the-art facility.
Additional features include a wash bay, small office, and tack/feed room—the interior walls are custom dyed concrete block. There is also ample turn out space for all of our horses with shelters and automatic waterers for their comfort and the entire facility is under 24-hour surveillance.
This magnificent stallion barn, built for Champion sire Medaglia d’Oro, rivals or exceeds any high-end breeding operation in Central Kentucky. An elaborate well-landscaped crushed brick courtyard and rubber paver walkways connect the stallion barn to the office and breeding shed.

WinStar was founded on a dream in 2000 by friends and business partners, Kenny Troutt and Bill Casner. What started as a 400-acre property – the former Prestonwood Farm – has grown to over 2,500 acres and is home to nearly 700 horses. WinStar started with just 4 stallions, one of which happened to be a young, unproven Distorted Humor who went on to sire 4 champions. A lot like Distorted Humor, WinStar had a humble beginning, but now competes at the highest level of racing, is home to elite stallions such as Speightstown and Constitution, and brilliant broodmares, which helped earn the farm two Eclipse awards for Outstanding Breeder in 2016 and 2020. We attribute our success to our dedication to the horse, from birth through retirement. Our commitment to the horse and our wider community is at the core of our mission statement, “The WinStar family strives to glorify God by raising superior horses, using the most caring and innovative practices, while loving our neighbors as ourselves, whether employees, clients, or vendors.” WinStar aims to be a guiding light not only in the thoroughbred industry, but also to our community.
