Tips and recommendations.

We will share some tips and recommendations for going on a cruise with young kids. Stay tune as we work on a full article for this at a later date too!

  • Wait - wait for promotions that the cruise lines usually run. 1-for-1 or Kids travel free are usually the best deals for families.
  • Don't Wait - once you have booked your cruise, do check out for any pre-book activities or meals. Not only will you ensure the best experience (no need to fuss onboard), you may even save some money in doing so!
  • Check the Age Limit - there are several that you should check
  • To even board : some cruises have 6 months or 1 year age limitations, so check with the indivdual cruises.
  • Kids Club : If you are looking forward to leaving the kids at the cruise's Kids Club, most will require the kids to be at least 3 yrs old and potty trained
  • Pool : related to age, but many pools do not allow kids who are not yet potty trained
  • Book Early - this includes for meals, baby chairs (if provided) and for the kids club. Do this immediately (or at least once you have settled down) after you have boarded the ship. This will make the rest of cruise easier too.
  • Going Onshore - decide if you will be going onshore, and prepare a separate day bag so you don't have trouble bringing the necessary items (diapers, hot water flask, water bottle, wet wipes, x million other items).
  • Nursing Rooms - do check if there are any available, and if you are comfortable, definitely bring along a nursing cover to nurse on the go.
  • Strollers and Bag Carriers - we say bring them along, its worth the hassle when you need to bring the kids from one end to another end of the ship, or if they fall asleep at weird place!

And there you go, our tips and recommendations if you are going cruising with young kids. Agree or disagree with us? Or have something else to add on?

The ultimate 3-day SINGAPORE ITINERARY FOR FAMILIES

The perfect singapore itinerary for families with young children.

Are you heading to Singapore with the children? Then check out the below 3-day Singapore itinerary for families with toddlers. It is packed full of attractions and activities to choose from for all family members. Singapore is a fantastic destination for families and can be budget friendly too. So I included some incredible free activities and places in this Singapore itinerary for families with toddlers.

Singapore 3 days itinerary for families

GETTING TO SINGAPORE FROM CHANGI AIRPORT

First, if you are looking for transfers from Changi Airport to your hotel, you can book a cheap and reliable ride  HERE .

Alternatively, there is a Taxi stand. However, depending on your arrival time, it can get pretty crowded, and the wait can get long.

Travel tip:  The easiest way to get to the city from the airport with all that luggage after a long flight is by taxi. Unless you bring your own travel seat, book a  car service with a child’s car seat included.

GETTING AROUND SINGAPORE

Getting around Singapore is very easy and convenient. Here are the options

There are plenty of taxis in Singapore. They are all clean and air-conditioned, the drivers speak English and do not attempt to cheat on fares like in some other countries in South East Asia. One of the most popular Taxi companies is ComfortDelGro. You can download their app to make exploring Singapore a breeze. Taxi drivers will usually let you hold your baby in your lap. However, when I need a ride, I typically book Grab. Grab is just like Uber, just that Uber is not available in Singapore. The good thing about Grab is that you can select extra features, such as baby and toddler seats, upon booking your ride via the Grab app. Usually, they are slightly more expensive than the standard ride, but I always go for this option.

MRT (Mass Rapid Transport) subway lines conveniently stretch across the entire city, thus making MRT a preferred way of getting around Singapore.

Click here to see the map of the MRT in Singapore.

If you are looking to use the MRT just a couple of times, you can purchase tickets at ticketing machines at all MRT stations. At the time of writing, they cost as little as S$1.40 – S$2.50 per ride, depending on how far you want to go. However, if you plan to take MRT regularly, opting for a Singapore Tourist Pass (STP) is better. This pass will allow you unlimited MRT travel for one day for $10, 2 days for $16, or three days unlimited travel for $20.

MRT stations and trains are super clean. However, note that there are hefty fines for eating, drinking, spitting, smoking, and carrying durian fruits on the trains and platforms of MRT train stations.

Read More: For a reason, Singapore is known as a FINE city; check out this article about more  things you should absolutely NOT do in Singapore.

You are also expected to give your seat to the elderly, people with disabilities, and pregnant women. Singaporeans are really nice; each time I get on the train with my daughter, several people immediately offer their seats even though she is no longer a baby.

MRT also operates a huge network of buses that can literally take you anywhere on the island.

Like most cities worldwide, Singapore has hop-on, hop-off sightseeing bus tours. This is an excellent option for tourists as they take you to all the famous landmarks. Another popular attraction to discover Singapore is by joining a  Duck tour . It’s a bus that can sail, allowing visitors to explore famous sights on land and in the sea.

Another option can be renting a bike. There are plenty of shared bike operators, such as SG Bikes, Anywhere, and Mobike. All you need is to download an app, scan and you are good to go. However, if you feel uncomfortable riding alone, there are small group bike tours with local guides you can check out and book here.

And of course walking! Singapore is like a city in a garden, and especially its city center can be easily explored on foot.

There are plenty of unique tours in Singapore that you can join if you like everything to be organized for you or are short on time.  Get your guide  has a variety of tours that can be booked in advance.

Okay, so now that we’ve covered the options for getting around Singapore, let’s get to Day 1.

Singapore itinerary for families Day 1

Travel tip : A family vacation in Singapore deserves more than selfies! I recommend  a Flytographer photoshoot of the traveling family  to capture those precious memories. After all, aren’t the memories from the trip the best souvenir? (Use the code  LITTLETRAVELLER  for $25 off)

No trip to Singapore is complete without visiting the Marina Bay area and its iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel. Most of the must-see places in Singapore are located in and around this beautiful Bay. Moreover, everything is within walking distance!

Read our  Ultimate Marina Bay with Kids guide here

Here’s what you can do in Marina Bay Singapore with children:

Gardens by the Bay

The Gardens are just behind the  Marina Bay Sands Hotel,  and most activities here are free. You only have to pay for the Could Forest, Flower Dome, Floral Fantasy, and going up the OSBC Skyway.

Singapore itinerary for families

Cloud Forest

If short on time, I would skip the Flower Dome. However, you do not want to miss the  Cloud Forest . Words can’t describe how incredible this indoor waterfall is. The water falls from a 35 meters tall indoor mountain covered in lush exotic plants and flowers. Moreover, there are pathways for visitors at various levels of the mountain surrounded by mist. I guess that’s where the name comes from- when you walk on those paths up high in the air through a cool mist, it does feel like walking on clouds.

Singapore itinerary for families

Supertree Grove and OSBC Skyway

If you want to enjoy splendid views of the surrounding Marina Bay Area, make a trip to the top of the Skyway. This bridge links the supertrees 22 meters above the ground. There are a total of 18 supertrees in the Gardens by the Bay, and 12 of them are located in Supertree Grove. The tallest of them measures up to 16 stories in height!

Singapore itinerary for families

Some people recommend visiting Supertrees Grove and going up the Skyway in the early morning when it’s not too hot. However, I prefer late afternoons, right before it gets dark. The entire place changes into something magical. I like to time it well and get up the Skyway while it’s still kind of light and see the entire area come alive with amazing displays of lights and sounds of the night.

Singapore itinerary for families

Know before you go:

  • If you are unfamiliar with the place, it is easy just to show up and join a long queue to get on the Skyway, thinking you can purchase the ticket when you get to the front- you can’t. So if you haven’t already purchased a ticket in advance online or from a separate ticket booth nearby, you will be turned down and have to queue again after you actually get the ticket.
  • The Skyway bridge wobbles a bit, so if you don’t have a head for heights, maybe you should think twice before going up.
  • If you travel with a baby/toddler- strollers are allowed on the Skyway. The lift takes you up and down the Skyway.

FUTURE WORLD: WHERE ART MEETS SCIENCE AT ART SCIENCE MUSEUM

Future World: Where Art Meets Science  is a permanent exhibition in Singapore’s Art Science Museum.

Art Science Museum is in front of The Shoppes at Marina Bay. It looks like a giant lotus surrounded by a huge decorative pool where thousands and thousands of purple lilies bloom. Really an Instagrammable place if you’re looking for one!

Singapore itinerary for families

There are usually several exhibitions on display, some permanent and some temporary. However, if you travel with kids, do go to their permanent show called  ‘Future World: Where Art Meets Science.’  It is super- kids friendly and incorporates tons of interactive digital play. I’ve written a separate post on this digital playground/workshop/edutainment center, and you can  read more about it here .

SAMPAN BOAT RIDE

Now The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands is no ordinary shopping mall and deserves a visit. There is an actual water canal inside the mall on the B2 level! Moreover, you can hop on a red sampan boat. The Sampan man will paddle the boat along the canal, under arches, small bridges, restaurants, cafes, and fancy boutiques towards the Rain Oculus and back. The Rain Oculus is an eco-friendly installation, a giant water fountain located 2 stories above. This massive steel, glass, and acrylic inverted fountain structure is 22 meters in diameter and 5.2 meters deep.

Singapore itinerary for families

At certain intervals, the water cascades down into the canal below, where the sampan boat is paddled around. Over 22,000 liters of water are released per minute, so it’s a pretty impressive sight, to say the least.

Know before you go:

– The ride takes about 10 minutes and costs $15 per person.

– B2, Canal Level, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands

– Nearest car park: Central (Orange zone)

-Opening hours: 11am – 9pm; last ride at 8.30 pm

-Tickets are available for walk-in purchase at Sampan Ticket Counter or online through  the Marina Bay Sands platform

-Pregnant women and children under 85cm in height are prohibited on Sampan boat rides.

DIGITAL LIGHT CANVAS

Digital light canvas is a multi-sensory digital installation that is so amusing for children. It is located on the mall’s side, nearest the Helix Bridge. This installation combines an LED floor and a 4D vision light sculpture.

Singapore itinerary for families

Basically it’s an amazing giant circle digital screen on the floor over which kids and the kids-at-heart can walk and run on and observe various displays change right under their feet.

The displays on the ground change and vary, for example you can watch shoals of fish gathering right under your feet, see diverse calligraphic art or beautiful blooming flowers. Lots of digital fun guaranteed!

  • Admission is $5 per person, Free for children < 2 years old and ‘Future World: Where Art Meets Science’ ticket holders
  • Tickets can be purchased at the B2 Retail Concierge Counter near Rasapura Masters.
  • Location: B2-50, Canal Level, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands
  • Nearest Car Park: North (Green zone)
  • Opening hours: daily 11am – 9pm; Last entry into the Digital Light Canvas is at 8.50pm
  • Children 6 years of age & below must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • Peak periods: Friday evenings and Saturdays; We recommend visiting any time from Sunday to Thursday for the best experience.

SPECTRA- A LIGHT, WATER AND MUSIC SHOW

This outdoor show is an absolute must-see in Singapore. Once the night falls, magic unfolds in front of your eyes over the water at the Event Plaza. (just outside the Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands). I can’t recommend this 15-minute show enough. It’s one of our favorite things to experience in Singapore. Head to the Event Plaza at 8 or 9 pm daily and immerse yourself in the fascinating symphony of colorful laser projections, dancing fountains, mist effects, and orchestral soundtrack. (There are additional shows at 10 pm over the weekends). Spectra is a beautiful and free addition to your family itinerary with toddlers in Singapore!

FAR EAST ORGANISATION CHILDREN’S GARDEN

‘Far East Organisation Children’s Garden’ water playground is yet another reason why Singapore is so amazing for children! It is so well located in Gardens by the Bay behind Marina Bay Sands hotel and offers lots of wet fun despite its weird name! I can guarantee your kids (and you) will fall in love with this place!

Singapore itinerary for families

Do bring towels and swimwear because it is impossible to not get soaked! On hot and sunny days (which they all are in Singapore), cooling down in this mini waterpark is simply irresistible. In addition to the large water play area, there is a little place with mini fountains for the tiny tots (up to five years old) to splash in and an outdoor playground next to it (no water) with swings, slides, an obstacle course, and climbing structures.

  • Free admission
  • No shoes allowed, but the surface is soft and non-slippery.
  • There is a separate changing area as well as public toilets. A cafe nearby serves a variety of snacks and drinks.
  • Address: 18 Marina Gardens Drive Gardens By the Bay
  • Suggested duration: ~1-2 hours
  • Open to visitors, young and young at heart, Thursday to Sunday from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm.

KITE RUNNING @ MARINA BARRAGE

If you fancy a cozy picnic and some kite running, Marina Barrage is the place to go. It is built across the mouth of a 350-meter-wide Marina Channel and is a reservoir. If you feel like stretching your legs, cycling or walking across the Barrage is possible too.

Singapore itinerary for families

While a reservoir does not really pop up in your mind when thinking about places to go with children, Marina Barrage has a massive green rooftop perfect for picnics and one of the best places on the island to fly kites because of the gusty winds coming from the shoreline.

Singapore itinerary for families

Moreover it offers beautiful vistas of Singapore skyline and various vessels in the horizon.

– Free Admission

– Address: 8 Marina Gardens Drive

SINGAPORE FLYER

If you’ve ever been on an Observation Wheel anywhere else in the world, you know what to expect. But, like with most other things, Singapore takes this to the next level.

Singapore itinerary for families

Singapore Flyer is the largest giant observation wheel in Asia. The cabins are spacious, air conditioned, clean and offer amazing panoramic views of Singapore.

If you are up for fancy dinner, Singapore Flyer offers Sky dining. Thats a 4 course menu with an in-flight host and magnificent skyline views. The dinner lasts two rotations which is approximately 1 hour.

Singapore itinerary for families DAY2

Good news for kids who love animals! There are several amazing wildlife parks in Singapore. Here’s what you can expect:

SINGAPORE ZOO

Singapore Zoo is ranked as one of the Top 5 best zoos in the world for a reason. It’s like a massive animal paradise for children and though they nevertheless are in captivity, Singapore Zoo does take a good care of them all.

The Zoo offers complimentary tram ride, so it’s a comfortable way to explore the zoo. The rides are unlimited. Sort of hop on, hop off bus idea, just that you are boarding little tram and explore different animal themes throughout the park. Overall, animal enclosure areas are arranged by themes and are far apart of each other so on hot and sunny days this tram is a life saver.

Singapore itinerary for families

You will probably see all the animals you can think of and more. My daughter was expecting to see the dinosaurs, unfortunately that’s off the table even in Singapore.

Actually, I’ve written a detailed guide to visiting Singapore wildlife parks. It also includes a beautiful Jurong Bird Park and more information on each venue, what to bring and what to expect there. You can read this article about visiting Wildlife parks in Singapore here.

– Skip the queues and buy your tickets in advance here: Singapore Zoo. Entrance Ticket

– Address: 80 Mandai Lake Road Singapore

-Nearest MRT: Khatib on the red line. From here you’ll have to take the Zoo shuttle that will bring you directly to the Wildlife parks area.

RIVER WONDERS

Despite its misleading name, River Wonders is not just about fish and the rivers.

If you love pandas, this is a place to go! There is a large (and very cold) enclosure for two pandas who came to Singapore from China. The male panda is called Kai Kai (凯凯) meaning victorious and the female panda is called Jia Jia (嘉嘉) which means fine or beautiful. In August 2021 they became parents to a super cute panda cub called Le Le. You can meet him in River Wonders as well!

Singapore itinerary for families

Sometimes they hide away from visitors, but most of the times we see them chilling and snacking on bamboos.

There is this super cute red panda too! I’m not sure if it has a name though.

River Wonders is located next to Singapore Zoo. It’s a better choice on rainy days as most of the pathways are covered so you don’t really get exposed to the rain.

Amazon River Quest is probably one of the highlights of the park. For extra fee (Adult ticket – $5, Child ticket – $3) you can embark on a boat adventure journey which is designed to simulate a journey along the actual Amazon River. Please note there are height restrictions for children. Riders must be at least 1.06m to hop onboard. The last ride departs at 6 pm.

singapore itinerary for families

If your little travellers do not meet height requirements there is another boat ride where everyone is welcome. It is called a Reservoir Cruise and it will take you along Upper Seletar Reservoir.

NIGHT SAFARI

It is THE best nightspot for children and an excellent addition to your Singapore family itinerary with toddlers. As the name suggests, Night Safari happens when the night falls. It is a guided 40 mins long tram tour. The tram will take you through 7 different geographical zones of the world. During the ride your children will learn about the most fascinating nocturnal animals in their specially lit enclosures.

An important piece of advice- take and use a generous amount of insect repellent. Mosquitos love the Night Safari too. In addition to anti mosquito sprays I place natural anti mosquito stickers for kids on Thea’s clothing. Check the link below should you want to get them for your children.

singapore itinerary for families

River Wonders, Night Safari and Singapore Zoo are located next to each other and are relatively far from central Singapore. The easiest access is by taxi or Grab, however you can also take MRT (subway in Singapore). The nearest MRT stop is Khatib on the red line. It’s not within a walking distance so there is a special shuttle decorated with animal stickers and plush toys between the MRT stop and the Zoo/River Safari priced $1 per person.

A better option yet, would be a visit to Night Safari with return transfers from Central Singapore.

Wildlife parks visit tip: Skip the queues to save time, sanity and patience and get your tickets below:

Singapore itinerary for families DAY3

What trip to Singapore without a visit to the island of fun? Yes, Sentosa is called the island of fun for a reason. The island is a great place to go to with kids in Singapore, and you should definitely add it to your family itinerary with toddlers.

The ultimate guide to visiting Sentosa Island and its Universal Studios with toddlers is available to read here.

There are several beaches with outdoor playgrounds as well as many activities and attractions. Since moving to Singapore back Thea and I visited the vast majority of attractions on Sentosa. Some were somewhat okay, some really disappointing but there are some that we keep returning to.

Singapore itinerary for families

Universal Studios Singapore is Sentosa’s highlight and one of the most famous attractions. If you choose to go to USS you can easily spend the entire day there. Please note there are height requirements on many of the rides. I went solo with my daughter who was 95 cm tall (rather short in this case) and we were unable to enjoy more than half of the park.

However if you travel with taller children then definitely USS is a great place to go.

There are several great attractions that we love and that are suitable for families with young tots and here’s our favourite. Add Sentosa Singapore to your family itinerary, I promise that everyone, from toddlers to parents will have lots of fun!

SKYLINE LUGE

It’s true what they say- once is never enough! Basically, what you get here are two fun activities in one place- the Luge and the Skyride. The Skyline Luge was invented in New Zealand over 30 years ago. It is a fun, wheeled, gravity ride that gives its riders, the young and young at heart, complete control over their descent on specific tracks.

Helmets are available and of different sizes, including helmets for kids. Children under 6 yrs can ride in tandem with an adult with an extra 4 SGD fee per ride. Can you spot tiny Thea riding in tandem with me in the photo?

Singapore itinerary for families

To ride the Luge alone, children must be 6 years of age and 110cm or taller. There are four thrilling Luge tracks with added fun features such as hairpin corners, tunnels, and downhill slopes that gently twist and turn for more fun. Remember to smile, though; there are cameras along the tracks, and given you like the photos, you can purchase them. In addition to the Luge down the hill, a Skyride brings you back up to the top for another ride down. The minimum required height for the little ones is 85cm to ride with an adult or 135cm to ride alone. Skyride is a 4-seater chairlift, something like what you would use in a skiing resort. It may not be your favorite part if you are not a big fan of heights. However, it is safe and offers excellent views of the South China Sea and all the vessels and cruise ships, together with a bird’s eye view of the Singapore skyline and Sentosa attractions.

 Know before you go:

  • To ride the Luge alone, children must be 6 years of age and 110cm or taller.
  • Children under 6 yrs can ride in tandem with an adult for an extra 4 SGD fee per ride. The carts are spacious, so it’s not really a big issue.
  • For Skyride, the minimum required height for the little ones is 85cm to ride with an adult or 135cm to ride alone.
  • Unless you are short of time, purchase at least three rides because, truly, once is never enough.

ADVENTURE COVE WATERPARK

If you and your kids love waterparks, go to the  Adventure Cove Waterpark  on Sentosa Island. There is another waterpark in Singapore called Wild Wild Wet, but it’s located on mainland Singapore in Pasir Ris.

I’ve loved waterparks since I was a little girl. There is just some magic with loads of water and thrill rides. Adventure Cove Waterpark is great for all the family, and on those hot and sunny days (which most of them are in Singapore), it’s a great way to cool down in style.

I took the photo below from  a cable car when we were approaching Sentosa .

family vacation Singapore

I tried all the rides available; however, my all-time favorite is the Lazy River which I highly recommend. Just grab one of the floats available at the shore and let the current push you all around in warm water. Please note that minimum height restrictions apply to some rides, varying between 107-122 cm. However, even the tiniest tots have options to splash. There are some facilities on site where you can dine Asian and Western favorites and a shop that stocks waterpark essentials and branded souvenirs. Hope you have a fun splash!

So here’s the 3-day Singapore itinerary for families with children. Obviously, there is so much more to do here, so if you can prolong your stay, do so.

If you have any questions or need recommendations, do not hesitate to contact me, I will do my best to help you.

WHERE TO STAY?

Naturally, when traveling, we need a place to stay. Please note that Airbnb is forbidden in Singapore. There have been several cases where people were fined and jailed for letting their apartments for the short term. Unless you have friends or family who can host you, there are plenty of hotels island-wide to suit every need and budget.

So, where to stay in Singapore?

The most sought-after and one of the most expensive is, of course,   the Marina Bay Sands Hotel .  I only have to agree that it is an amazing hotel from the inside out. The best part? The infinity pool on the top with amazing views over Singapore and the Bay. And you couldn’t ask for a better location.

When we moved to Singapore from Beijing in 2017, we stayed at  SO Sofitel in the Tanjong Pagar   area for about 10 days. We were surrounded by attention and smiles during our stay, and our baby daughter was showered with gifts. The location is also perfect for exploring on foot and is within 10 minute walk to Marina Bay.

Back on Royal Caribbean Singapore! – My tips for families with young children

A few weeks ago, the family and I boarded Royal Caribbean Singapore’s Voyager of the Seas for a family vacay.

Not sure if you guys remember this, but last year we experienced Mariner of the Seas when Aidan was 1  and I was pregnant with Davina back then. This time, we went back to Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas for a 5d4n trip which had stops at Port Klang and Phuket but we only disembarked at Phuket.

Here’s my experience on bringing an infant and a toddler on a cruise! This time, I had more opportunities to try various activities and take more pictures as I wasn’t pregnant and suffering from super bad morning sickness. Here’s my tips on traveling with a newborn and a toddler on Royal Caribbean Cruise.

  • Bringing a stroller and a baby carrier (like a Tula) was the right idea.

Be kiasu. With a newborn, you’ll like have to babywear all the way. Having a stroller means the newborn (or even the toddler) can lie down and nap. But of course, if you do not bring a stroller, you can always avoid taking the lifts and get to places faster.

Untitled

But personally i feel that a cruise is one of the most relaxing holiday that you can take. Be kiasu, bring both carriers and strollers.

Plus a stroller is always a makeshift diaper changing table, especially if your room is far away.

  • Request for items earlier.

Once I boarded, I immediately requested for a playpen. I’m not sure how many they are, but I rather be kiasu and book asap. You can also make a request to book a playpen before your cruise!

Also, if you did not prebook your dining times earlier, (i.e. if you are on My Time Dining), you can either make a standing reservation (e.g. 5:30pm everyday) or you can book a day earlier. You can also make your reservation online via the Cruise Planner on Royal Caribbean’s website pre-cruise!

Untitled

Again, to avoid disappointments, we booked earlier and the same time each day.

  • Plan in advance for activities that you’ll like to do.

Some of the activities that we really wanted to do was the Flowrider and Rock-climbing. We managed to get these activities done within the first two days.

Untitled

Which was really lucky of us, because it rained the next two days. Phew! Skai really enjoyed the Flowrider so much that he queued over and over again for it.

Untitled

Also, for most of the performances, do queue earlier to get good seats especially for the ice-skating show. It was fully booked when we went and we had to catch the next show. Highly recommended to go for it!

Untitled

Back last year, Aidan enjoyed the shows. This time, he enjoyed it more! I felt that he understood it more and he really enjoyed the song and dances more this time.

Untitled

Go for a swim, I like that they had movie screenings outdoor where families can just laze in the jacuzzi and watch the movies. Super nua and comfy activity!

  • Stay safe. Stick to the Main Dining Room if you have young kids or a big family.

While I do enjoy the buffet selections, I feel that having a dedicated table is more important. With young kids, it’s tough to wait for tables especially when they get hungry and cranky. I prefer to eat at the Main Dining Room (ours was Sapphire Dining Room) and head to Windjammer for snacks if need be. Also with big families, it’s kinda impossible to get a table altogether especially if you go at the peak timings.

Untitled

Also, you get to enjoy dedicated service, quieter quality moments.

Untitled

There are kids menu available where you can order items without salt too. Also, it’s like an ala-carte buffet, you can order multiple servings.

  • Sleep in. Order breakfast in .

Untitled

We order breakfast everyday just in case the kids can’t wake up for breakfast.

  • Offshore excursions are fun!

Untitled

We chose to disembark at Phuket and go for the Panoramic Tour where we had a tour of Phuket in the comfort of an air-conditioned bus. Honestly, there were other excursions where you can go on foot to explore Phuket and were more fun but we had to think of how feasible it would be carrying a newborn and a toddler. Don’t bring the stroller along here! I made a huge mistake here…. I forgot to bring down any cash when we went to Phuket. Was too used to the just using our card on the cruise that I left my money in the safe. Oops. We missed out on all of the street food! SOBS.

  • Bring a nursing cover.

Untitled

There isn’t any nursing rooms if I remember correctly. A nursing cover means I could nurse anywhere anytime. Royal Caribbean is super family friendly, no one stared when I nursed in public.

  • If you can only choose one paid restaurant – choose Johnny Rockets!

Untitled

If you have a fries monster son like I do, do check out Johnny Rockets. Just for one flat fee, you can enjoy all the yummy burgers, hotdogs, floats and fries to your heart’s content. Till today, Aidan keeps asking for the fries place. Oops.

  • Most of all, just chill & have fun.

Untitled

Things will happen. There will be tantrums, wailing, poonamis etc. But the beauty of a cruise is that you can stop anytime.

Untitled

If the kids need a nap, dapao them back to the room.

Untitled

If they pooed and needed a diaper change, go back to the room. Enjoy most of the facilities anytime. There is no rush I feel unlike when traveling elsewhere. A cruise is definitely a good starting point for traveling with young kids for the first time.

Thank you Royal Caribbean Singapore for the opportunity. While this trip was partially sponsored, opinions are my own and not obligated.

7 Best Cruise Lines for Families (and Their 12 Most Kid-Friendly Ships)

By: Author Elizabeth Ciobanu

Posted on Published: 07/18/2023  - Last updated: 07/20/2023

Traveling to new places is always a thrill, but it can come with some challenges. For example, which side of the road are you supposed to drive on ?

toddler friendly cruise singapore

Cruises simplify the bulk of your vacation planning and transportation, as everything you need is in one convenient package.

A family cruise line will keep your children entertained day and night. I’ve rounded up seven of my favorites, which I’ll share in the first part of this guide.

Then I’ll recommend the most kid-friendly cruise ships for booking your next vacation.

The 7 Best Family-Friendly Cruise Lines

1. disney cruise line.

Discover how enchanting life at sea can be on a Disney Cruise Line.

Entertainment of all kinds awaits you. If you want to splash and play on your family vacation, you can ride the AquaDunk or AquaDuck water coasters, romp in Donald’s Pool or Goofy’s Pool, or enjoy the sparkling pool at Mickey’s AquaLab.

Pools are also divided for guests of varying ages, such as the Quiet Cove Pool for guests 18 and older, splash pads for kids three and under, and Satellite Falls for adults.

Live performances and musicals give each night a magical feel, while karaoke, trivia, and Disney character meet and greets ensure every minute aboard is exciting.

There are even kids’ clubs to give parents a break to enjoy nightclubs, fitness facilities, or the adults-only pool.

Your cruise will stop at Castaway Cay if visiting a Caribbean or Bahamian island. This island is exclusively for cruise line guests. Your day at Castaway Cay will include food and refreshments, beach access, pools and water slides, trails, and yoga classes.

Oh, and there’s all-you-can-eat ice cream, which will delight children of all ages.

The family-centric staterooms offer television with in-room movies, a fridge, plenty of storage, and split bathrooms so the family can maintain its privacy.

Disney Cruise Lines can take you across the Transatlantic, South Pacific, Panama Canal, Pacific Coast, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Hawaii, Europe, the Caribbean, Canada, Bermuda, Alaska, and the Bahamas.

2. Norwegian Cruise Line

Take the family vacation of a lifetime on the Norwegian Cruise Line.

Its Freestyle Cruising allows you to plan your vacation just the way you like it. Enjoy long-running, Tony Award-nominated musicals or top-notch concerts.

Family fun awaits at every turn, such as arcades, pinball, water slides and pools, rock-climbing walls, mini golf, and plenty of other organized sports like soccer, baseball, basketball, and bowling.

The ThrillPlex offers activities that will make your kids smile from ear to ear. How does a rousing game of family laser tag sound? Or maybe you want to climb a ropes course or race on a track to see who’s the fastest? The ThrillPlex has all that and more.

Eat well no matter the cuisine you and the family crave, from simple burgers to Brazilian steakhouses, Japanese food, seafood, or global cuisine. Some establishments offer buffet-style dining, and others are open 24 hours so you can always fill your belly.

The sizable suites and staterooms are family-friendly and accommodate larger groups of up to eight. Your room includes concierge and butler service, large rooms for privacy, and a balcony you’ll love to look out from.

Norwegian Cruise Lines visit Asia, New England, Florida, Alaska, the Bahamas, Canada, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, Europe, and Hawaii. You can also take special cruise tours or music-themed cruises.

3. Royal Caribbean International

Experience the world’s wonders on a Royal Caribbean International cruise line.

You won’t want for much, as the various ships under the Royal Caribbean umbrella promise fun and excitement from the moment you step onto the ship until you disembark.

You can take dance classes, check out a virtual concert, strategize to get out of an escape room, and eat to your heart’s (and stomach’s) content.

The youth programs feature an Imagination Studio for kids to explore and express their creative sides. Older kids can become junior scientists at the Adventure Science Lab, while the Teen Lounge keeps similarly-aged kids entertained.

Activities like story time, theater, art, and science will enchant the young’uns, who you will definitely want to bring, as kids sail free.

Cruise the world on a Royal Caribbean ship, including the Bahamas, Alaska, New England, the Caribbean, New Zealand, Asia, Canada, Mexico, Latin America, the Panama Canal, Hawaii, the Transpacific, Transatlantic, South Pacific, or Pacific Northwest.

4. Carnival Cruise Line

It’s time to get away on a Carnival Cruise Line.

This vacation experience can be anything you want, from relaxing and rejuvenating (with adult-only retreats and spas) to exciting with breathtakingly tall water slides, Family Feud Live, and the SkyRide overlooking the ocean.

The kids can hop around and burn off energy at the bungee Sky Zone, make a new friend at the Build-A-Bear Workshop at Sea, play mini golf, spend the day at the arcade, or compete in a friendly game of basketball.

Camp Ocean keeps kids between 2 and 11 years old busy, and Circle “C” is for older kids between 12 and 14.

Of course, with a ropes course, IMAX theaters, and a space program for kids 2 to 11, there’s always something for families to do together.

A stateroom or suite can accommodate your entire brood, whether there are only a few of you or a larger group. The rooms have an extra bathroom, a TV, and climate control.

Some rooms even connect so your kids can feel independent while you keep a watchful eye over them.

A Carnival Cruise Line vacation can take you across Greenland, the Panama Canal, Asia, the South Pacific, the Transatlantic, New Guinea, the South Pacific, New Zealand, the Panama Canal, Hawaii, New England, the Bahamas, Canada, Alaska, Europe, the Transpacific, Bermuda, and the Bahamas.

5. Princess Cruises

Perhaps a vacation on a Princess Cruise Line is what your family needs.

Onboard activities for all tastes are available. Princess and Discovery have an immersive, unique Discovery at SEA Enrichment Program that lets you see this planet and its inhabitants in engaging ways.

The Festivals of the World Program will introduce your family (especially the kiddos) to new cultures as they celebrate Mexican fiestas, Carnaval de Panama, Celtic Festival, and more.

Take a dip in a pool, chill out in a hot tub, play every sport imaginable (from shuffleboard to mini golf), and catch a tan at the Reef Family Splash Zone, a mini water park with games, pools, and water features.

6. MSC Cruises

Immerse yourself in coastal wonder on an MSC Cruise.

You and your family will find it exceptionally easy to plan your itinerary both day and night. How does a family disco sound after dark, or a family game show that includes selfie, music, and dance challenges?

That’s only scratching the surface! The 4D cinema experience makes you feel like you’re racing on a freeway or experiencing other immersive scenes without leaving your seat. The Robotron is a thrilling amusement ride, and the Flight Simulator lets you take to the skies while still safely on the ship.

The kids can also play at the arcade, practice driving in the F1 simulator, or play some sports. Live entertainment abounds, with options for just the adults or the entire family.

The family-friendly staterooms include buffet access and a discounted drink package so you can feed the family for less.

An MSC Cruise will take you across New England, Asia, South Africa, South America, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Canada, Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean.

7. Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises are catered to families, with excursions, programs, and activities for kids and adults. They even offer autism-friendly activities, which are highly inclusive.

Imagine the look on your children’s faces when swimming with dolphins, exploring inactive volcanoes on foot, or seeing an exotic country from thousands of feet up in a plane! Celebrity Cruises makes it possible.

The kids and teen programs include Camp at Sea for kids between 3 and 12. Participants have themed parties, play sports, do arts and crafts, and engage in treasure hunts.

The Teen Club offers culinary classes, parties, and video game competitions.

The Retreat is the most family-friendly lodging option, as it includes more than 2,500 square feet of lounge space, an ample veranda, and a private sundeck.

Celebrity Cruises stop at more than 300 cruise ports, including Africa, New Zealand, Alaska, New England, Galapagos, the Caribbean, Europe, Bermuda, Asia, the Mediterranean, the Panama Canal, the Transatlantic, Mexico, the Pacific Coastal, South America, and the Transpacific.

The 12 Most Kid-Friendly Ships

You have some great ideas for where to book your next family cruise, but now the question is which ship specifically is right for your group?

I’m here to help you make this all-important choice by reviewing 12 of the best cruise ships for kids.

1. Disney Dream

Disney magic comes to life on the Disney Dream, an enchanting cruise experience.

The warm, opulent common areas add extravagance to your vacation, while kid-friendly activities and amenities will keep the young ones entertained.

Treat them to Vanellope’s Sweets, a candy shop with walls of candy as far as the eye can see. Disney entertainment comes to the big stages as only this brand can, with costumed characters singing, dancing, and entertaining guests all day or evening.

The staterooms have portholes that allow the kids to glance out at the ocean whenever they wish, and with family-centric amenities at every turn, you might not want to disembark!

2. Wonder of the Seas

The Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas embarks from Cape Canaveral and island hops the entire cruise, including a stop at Perfect Day at Coco Cay, the Royal Caribbean’s own private island only for cruise guests.

Kids will fall in love with the Wonder Playscape, which offers puzzles, games, climbing walls, and slides. Pool decks throughout will let you take a much-needed load off.

Perhaps you and the family are brave enough to try the 10-story Ultimate Abyss water slide!

Some staterooms overlook the majesty of the sea, and others have a virtual balcony. All rooms include Wi-Fi, spa features, and room service.

3. Disney Magic

You have so many ways to experience the wonder of a Disney Cruise Line vacation, including the Disney Magic.

This inviting ship is the home of D Lounge, the family-friendly hangout zone with dance parties, games, and hours upon hours of fun.

The kids can manage the Avengers during the Avenger’s Academy ride, visit the Mickey Mouse Club, receive a makeover at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique (knights for boys and princesses for girls), or ride dizzying, spiraling water slides.

The nautical-themed staterooms are cozy and spacious for families, and split bathrooms, portholes, and private verandas also set the mood.

4. Symphony of the Seas

Calling itself “The Sound of Wonder,” the Symphony of the Seas through the Royal Caribbean is new and improved for families.

Hit up Sugar Beach and buy some candy, ride three water slides in one on The Perfect Storm, or learn to hang ten on the FlowRider. You’ll spend the days in the most fun ways possible.

Wonderland has whimsical food the kids will go gaga over. There are cocktails for the parents that are just as inspired.

Snuggle up to the Ultimate Family Suite, which boasts a private game room, a hot tub, table tennis facilities, and karaoke.

5. Mardi Gras

Carnival’s Mardi Gras is one of its latest and greatest creations, so you should expect the ultimate in entertainment.

Take a ride on the Bolt sea coaster for some exciting thrills. You can also spend a sunny day at the WaterWorks water park with a dumping bucket and countless water slides, then close out the day by seeing a show. It’s all waiting for you.

The Family Harbor Staterooms in the Family Harbor Lounge is where you need to be. Kids eat free at most restaurants in the lounge, and you can take advantage of entertainment like board games and movies. Babysitting is also available.

6. MSC Meraviglia

Departing from Florida, the Bahamas, and Bermuda, set sail for a world of adventure aboard the MSG Meraviglia. This ship sails to New England and Canada and delights the entire voyage.

Stroll through the 315-foot Galleria Meraviglia promenade, shopping, grabbing a bite to eat, or simply enjoying the beauty of it all.

Dive into the Horizon pool, which is open day and night (although there are dances and parties at night, so maybe visit sans kids).

Your kids will adore the F1 simulators, full-sized bowling alley, sportsplex, and Polar Aquapark with its sloping, looping enclosed slides.

Mini and Juniors Clubs give the kids a safe and fun place to play if you need to drop them off, as the rooms are bright, colorful, and full of toys.

7. Disney Wish

The Disney Cruise Line collection has recently expanded, adding Disney Wish to the ever-growing fleet. This ship has some claims to fame you’ll only find here, such as theatrical Frozen or Avengers -themed dining experiences.

Be one of the first to experience the Disney Unchartered Adventure, an immersive water experience with more than 700 feet of tubes and music, animations, special effects, and lighting. The experience ends by riding down a lazy river, so dress to get wet!

The Hero Zone is another standout the kids should love. They can compete with one another gameshow-style, play on the game floor or playground, and see who’s victorious on the sports court.

8. Carnival Panorama

Set sail to the Transpacific and Mexico on the Carnival Panorama through a Carnival Cruise Line. The 1,055-foot ship that weighs over 133,000 tons will put the whole family in a festive mood.

Laugh until you cry at The Punchliner Comedy Club, which also offers entertainment for adults.

The Carnival Panorama has plenty of Dr. Suess-themed entertainment the young ones will love, such as Dr. Suess Bookville, the Suess-a-palooza Parade, the Suess-a-palooza Story Time, and the Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast.

Zumbini is a Zumba class for kids two to five that will have their little bodies moving and grooving. There’s also a Night Owls overnight stay for the children, which is like one big sleepover!

9. Allure of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International invites families to sail away on the Allure of the Seas, an award-winning ship for family entertainment.

Included with your stay are kids and teen programs and access to the H2O Zone Water Park. The park boasts waterfalls, water cannons, pools, and sculptures the kids can climb. Geysers send water high into the sky, splashing down and refreshing your children all afternoon.

Dry off and play table tennis, ride a zipline, partake in an interactive game show, or watch an outdoor movie under the stars in the pool. The projector screen is 220 feet so there isn’t a bad seat in the house!

10. Norwegian Joy

The Norwegian Joy starts in the Mexican Riviera and wraps up its journey at the Panama Canal but alternately travels from Miami to the Caribbean. The ship is nearly 1,100 feet long and weighs more than 160,000 tons, so she’s quite heavy.

Fostering family togetherness on a ship like the Norwegian Joy is simple. You can take the twists and turns behind the wheel of the Joy Speedway, play a heart-thumping game of laser tag, or tee off at mini golf.

There’s so much more here. The Galaxy Pavilion offers a thrilling race-themed dark ride. Get your kicks at the Aqua Park, a water park for tweens and teens. The Norwegian Joy even has a Kids’ Aqua Park for the little ones.

11. Celebrity Equinox

Make your next family vacation something truly special on the Celebrity Equinox through the Celebrity Cruise Line. Deck 15 has all the amenities a family needs.

For instance, you and the kids can learn how to blow glass at the Hot Glass Studio, which is not something you see on every cruise ship.

How about some croquet or bocce on the Lawn Club? The kids’ club will watch your children between three and 12, offering lunch, dinner, and overnight stays if needed, and the ship even offers babysitting services in your cabin.

12. Norwegian Encore

Traverse the world on the Norwegian Encore, traveling from Alaska to Seattle or from the Caribbean to Miami. Adventure calls on the Encore, including many of the fun activities for families featured on other Norwegian cruise ships.

Genting Dream is The Family-Friendly Cruise that Your Kids Will Love!

By Uma Nathan

toddler friendly cruise singapore

Thinking of sailing somewhere with the kids aboard a swanky cruise ship this school holidays instead of the regular land tours? Genting Dream , one of the largest and most spacious cruise liners in Asia is the new kid on the block that promises fun at sea for the whole family. I was treated to a tour of the 18-deck ship which can accommodate up to 3,400 guests at the official launch ceremony at Marina Bay Cruise Centre yesterday.

Here’s what families with kids can look forward to when they get onboard the Genting Dream where the finest Asian hospitality awaits!

Will You Stay in a Stateroom, Suite or Penthouse?

140827_YS_Presentation.pdf

First things first, let’s talk about accommodation. Over 70 percent of the Staterooms (above) on Genting Dream feature private balconies, and there are also over 100 connecting rooms which I think will be perfect for extended families who are holidaying together. Accommodation choices start from the Inside Stateroom which is compactly sized at 14 sqm. and can be occupied by up to three people. What’s the cream of the crop, you ask? The Garden Penthouse! It’s sprawling at 224 sqm. and accommodates up to four people – perfect for two adults and two kids!

Dream Grand Villa Living Room

There are also suites which can hold up to four people to choose from. There’s the Dream Suite, Palace Suite, Dream Deluxe Suite and Dream Executive Suite. Stay in one of these lavish suites and be spoilt silly by the European style butler service (you’re on holiday afterall)! You will also get priority reservations for restaurants, spa treatments and entertainment (the kids won’t be disappointed), a dedicated private outdoor deck and pool, replenishable bottle of wine and gourmet tea and coffee when you book a suite on Genting Dream. Oh, and the kids will receive a welcome gift!

Dream Grand Villa Courtyard_Final

Amenities in all rooms include luxury bath products (Salvatore Ferragamo for staterooms and Etro for suites and above), Frette fine bedding, flat-panel television and complimentary tea & coffee. Have I mentioned that you get to choose from a pillow and duvet menu before checking in? Yes, Dream Cruises takes sleep very seriously. With a choice of cotton, satin, down or feathers, you will be sure to find that perfect pillow for a good night’s rest. Rest assured, the kiddos won’t be tossing and turning after a day of fun under the sun.

Have Some Family Fun with Genting Dream’s Outdoor Activities!

toddler friendly cruise singapore

It won’t be long before the kids complain of boredom no matter how spacious your penthouse is. So take them out for some sporty fun! As far as I’m concerned, the highlight on Genting Dream is the Waterslide Park (above) . If your kids are thrill-seekers, you have got to let them take the plunge and race through the water high above the ocean! There are six slides ranging from gentler ones for the faint-hearted and the wildest reserved for daredevil adults.

Unfortunately, only one water slide is child-friendly while the remaining five gravity defying ones are meant for the grownups. But hey, the kids can still have a splashing good time at the deck pool (below) !

Genting Dream Main Pool 2

On Deck 18, you’ll find several child-friendly outdoor activities which also serve as photo opportunities. Let junior test his agility on the Ropes Course or have a go at rock climbing! The rock climbing wall is about 24 feet high, just the right height for older kids with lots of energy to spare. When the kids are done with those, how about some mini golf (below) ? The nine-hole putting course promises fun for the whole family!

Genting Dream Mini Golf Course

Just a level above on Deck 19, is the Sportsplex. Kids who love ball sports are sure to have a ball of a time (pun intended) here. They can choose from basketball, volleyball or five-a-side football!

Go On a Journey of Underwater Discovery in a Submersible!

Finding Nemo

If your children are marine life enthusiasts, here’s your chance to give them an experience of a lifetime. Take them on a submersible! The pair of state-of-the-art submersibles on Genting Dream are designed to carry one pilot and four guests and cruise at three knots while underwater. Step into one of these and encounter a spectacular array of fish and other exotic marine critters! Boy, how I wish the media tour had included a ride in one of these!

Keep Your Little Ones Occupied at The Little Pandas Club!

LITTLE PANDAS CLUB

What a cute name, no? The Little Pandas Club (above) on Genting Dream is a venue for children aged from two to twelve. Little ones can try their hand at arts and crafts, play dress-up with themed costumes, watch a G-rated animated film, or just play with an assortment of toys! The Little Pandas Club is also available for hire should you want to throw a birthday party for junior while on vacation. A birthday party at sea – how cool is that?

If you’d like to enjoy some alone time with your spouse by having a romantic candlelight dinner at one of the 35 restaurants the Genting Dream offers, you can use the in-stateroom babysitting service. Rest assured, your child will be in good hands as all staff at the Little Pandas Club are certified childcare professionals.

BOWLING ALLEY

Since there are babysitting services onboard, how about letting your hair down at the first Zouk at sea, mum and dad? The high energy nightclub is a sports bar during the day with a glow-in-the-dark four-lane bowling alley and pool tables (above) .You definitely deserve some down time during your much anticipated year-end holiday!

edge pan pacific sunday brunch kids play area

For parents like me, with children under six, bringing them to a buffet often turns into a juggling act. The challenge of helping them get their food, keeping them entertained, and trying to enjoy my own meal usually means I’m eating on the run. But Edge has introduced a dedicated Kids Play Area that transforms the dining experience.

The play area is a brilliant addition, stocked with toys and games, and featuring a kid-sized buffet table filled with snacks, fruits, and easy-to-access drinks. My children delighted in the space, happily occupied with activities, while the rest of us savoured our meal. It’s a win-win. I appreciated that my husband and I could take turns checking on them every 15 minutes, knowing they were engaged and safe.

The brunch itself is a true gastronomic adventure. Executive Chef Andy Oh and his team have curated an impressive spread that takes you on a culinary journey across Singaporean, Chinese, Malay, Indian, Japanese, Thai, and Western cuisines. Highlights included the tender Australian Black Angus Beef Prime Ribs, the richly flavoured Signature Nonya Laksa, and the ever-popular Singapore Chili Crab with its perfectly paired mantou buns.

Seafood lovers will rejoice at the fresh, expansive spread that includes freshly shucked oysters, sustainable Boston lobster, snow crab legs, and much more.
