  • Accommodation
  • Practical info
  • Arrival info

Your hotel is situated in a unique part of the Netherlands: the centre of The Veluwe. Today, you have plenty of time to take in the beautiful surroundings. The welcoming village of Garderen is certainly worth a visit.

We will provide you with a total of four bicycle routes to choose from, each with 3 options:

  • Tour North: direction Harderwijk (44 / 56 / 60 km)
  • Tour East, direction Apeldoorn (38 / 48 / 58 km)
  • Tour South, direction National Parc De Hoge Veluwe (Tickets included), (38 / 53 / 61 km).
  • Tour West, direction Putten (44 / 54 / 62 km).

Vast forests, purple-colored heather fields, picturesque towns and charming cities: with the North Veluwe route you can see it all. You cycle over the Ermelose Heide, a heathland of no less than 343 hectares. You pass the picturesque towns of Drie, Ermelo, Hierden and Leuvenum. You will also cycle along the beautiful old Hanseatic town of Harderwijk.

You can also opt for a shorter route that does not go through Ermelo, Harderwijk and Hierden (44 km) or a longer tour with a loop across the Beekhuizerzand (60 km).

Eastern Veluwe                                                                                                                                                                                           48 km

This tour goes largely through and along the royal estate Het Loo, the largest estate in the Netherlands, most owned by the royal family. You also come to their former palace, now a museum with beautiful gardens. Thanks to the many streams that flow from the Veluwe towards the IJssel, you will find yourself in a fresh green landscape.

Today you can also opt for a shorter route that does not go past Apeldoorn with the palace (38 km) or a longer route that goes past many burial mounds and the Celtic Fields, further you pass through the nice village of Vaassen and you cycle over the former 'de Baronnenlijn' railway line to the beautiful water mill of Wenum (58 km).

Finish your day in a relaxed manner in the sauna or solarium, or with a swim in the hotel's heated outdoor swimming pool.

This tour will take you to National Park De Hoge Veluwe (ticket included) and you will discover how beautiful unspoilt nature can be. In the middle of this beautiful nature area you will find the Kröller-Müller Museum with, among other things, an extensive collection of paintings by Vincent van Gogh and the beautiful sculpture garden. You cycle along the vast heaths and sand dunes and drifts at Kootwijk and Hoog Buurlo. You also pass Radio Kootwijk.

You can also opt for a shorter route and combine this with a walk on the Kootwijkerzand, you will miss De Hoge Veluwe National Park (38 km). The longer option includes a larger part of the De Hoge Veluwe National Park (61 km).

Western Veluwe                                                                                                                                                                                     54 km

This tour will take you past the prettiest spots in Western Veluwe. You will cycle through beautiful natural areas on Boeschoten Country Estate and around Voorthuizen and De Appelse Heide. The route will also guide you to recreational area Strand Nulde, great for swimming or lazing on the beach.

You can also opt for a shorter route, skipping Voorthuizen and De Appelse Heide (44 km). On the long route you follow the old coast further north after Nulde beach. Via the agricultural area around the old hamlets of Horst and Telgt and past the subtropical swimming pool “Bospad Putten” you will arrive in the Sprielder Bos (62 km).

You have cycled the Tour over the Veluwe. Today your bike holiday draws to a close, but not until you have indulged in a big hearty breakfast for the last time. After breakfast, it is time to go home. *) You can choose which of the 4 day tours you cycle.

Starting point: Garderen

The hotels and the B&B on this trip have been carefully selected for their location, atmosphere and/or unique services. All rooms are en-suite. A list of the accomodation we work with appears below. If a certain accomodation is unable to confirm due to lack of availability, we will try to request a comparable alternative if possible.

When selecting the accomodation, we try to take into account as much as possible a safe and closed bicycle shed. However, we cannot do this with all of them guarantee and this partly depends on the number of bicycles of other guests.

Hotel de Werelt Garderen

www.dewereltgarderen.nl

If you don’t bring your own bike, you can rent one from us. Our touring bikes are 24-speed gear. You can find all the information regarding our rental bikes below.

You will find your rental bike waiting for you at your first hotel. The hotel reception staff will give you the keys for your bikes and direct you to the bicycle shed. All bikes are provided with chain locks.

Why the Dutch don't wear helmets!

Instruction video hybrid bike and e-bike

Hybrid bike

Our hybrid bikes have 24-gears with hand brakes.  The hybrid bikes are circa 16,5 KG.

Rental bike

The e-bikes have a small electric engine and battery, which can be charged at the hotels. You still have to pedal: it just makes pedaling much easier. Some experience with e-bikes is recommended, as the bikes accelerate faster and are heavier than regular bikes because of the electric engine. The weight of the e-bike is ca. 25 KG. We recommend a minimum height of 160 cm for the e-bike.

E-bike

Child bikes

For children who are at least 120 cm, we can also arrange bikes (these are 24”or 26” for children that are bigger than 140 cm).  The child bikes come with at least 7-gears and hand brakes.  The maximum body height for a child’s bike is 155 cm.

24" child bike:

e bike tour veluwe

Accessories

All our rental bikes come with a bell.

All our adult bikes come with hand brakes.

For children up to 30 months old (max. 15 KG) it is possible to rent a front child seat. This is not possible with e-bikes, due to the display.

For children older than 30 months (max. 22KG) it is possible to rent a rear child seat. This is also possible with e-bikes.

Both front- and rear child seats are €5,- per day.

Helmets are not mandatory in the Netherlands, but can be rented for €10,- per piece. Available sizes: Adult: 54-61 cm, Child: 50-55 cm (only available for children over 5 years).

All our bikes come with both front- and rear lights. You need to push the button on the lamp and it will flash three times. This means that the lights will automatically start working when it gets dark.

When you push again, the lamp will flash one time and the lights will be turned off.

Our bikes come with a defender lock with plug in chain (cable lock that is attached to the regular lock, see picture).

You need to turn the key a bit, take out the pin from the cable lock and attach it to a pole/other bike/fence etc.

When you push the pin back into the regular lock, you need to lock the regular lock as you always do, and both locks will be secured.

e bike tour veluwe

1 pannier is included at the 'standard' bikes and the e-bikes.

Height: 42 cm Depth front to the side: 17 cm Wide top: 32 cm Wide down: 23 cm Volume: 20 liters It has an easy click-on/click-off system. The panniers are water resistant, so everything will stay dry.

The rental bikes come with regular pedals, so no click-in/SPD pedals.

All our bikes come with a quick release system, which makes it very easy to adjust the height of the saddle and the handle bars.

There is one small puncture kit included, which can be found in the pannier. In case a rental bike has another problem, we always advise you to go to a bike repair shop or call the bike breakdown emergency number which is provided in the travel documents when you book this extra service.

Saddles can be adjusted in height without using any tools, see ‘Quick Release’. Our saddles don’t come with a gel cover.

Dutch Biketours does not provide water bottles. We can also not guarantee that there are bottle holders on the bikes. You will always receive 1x pannier, so you can always store your water bottle in your pannier.

Tandem bike

e bike tour veluwe

Adult-child tandem

We have limited family tandem bikes available on request. The family tandems have 7-gears and can be used for one adult and one child with a minimum body height of 125 cm.

e bike tour veluwe

Tag-along bike

A tag-along bike is a good option for children between approx. 100 cm and 125 cm, as they can pedal themselves and on their own pace but don’t have to worry about other traffic.

e bike tour veluwe

Child trailer

Child trailers can be rented for a maximum of two children who are up to 100 cm (max. 35 KG in total). We mostly use the XLC Duo 2 child trailer. Child trailers are not possible in combination with e-bikes.

Bike Breakdown Pass

Mile after wonderful mile of untroubled cycling is what we would wish our clients. However there is a minimal chance of breakdown along the way. If this thought is a nagging worry to you, a Bicycle Breakdown Assistance insurance policy may ease your mind. If you buy this insurance from our partner ANWB pechhulp in advance, their service is as follows. The costs are €4,- per bicycle per day. If your bike breaks down by the roadside an ANWB bicycle repair man will drive to you in his repair van and fix your bike so you can continue your tour. You won’t have to pay him repair costs. If you are cycling on your own bicycle you will be charged for any new spare parts your bike may require. If you are renting a bicycle through Dutch Bike Tours any new parts are at our expense. If it turns out the bicycle cannot be repaired on the spot, or if you can't continue cycling, the repairman can drop you off somewhere in his van. One companion plus bikes may join you in the van.

Bike Theft Insurance

Do you wish to insure your bike against theft? The cost is € 3,- per day per standard hybrid bicycle. For an electric bicycle, premium bike or racing bike: € 6,00 per day per bicycle. Please see the General Terms and Conditions for Bicycle Hire and Insurance.

If a rental bike gets stolen or damaged, we will hold the client responsible. If your insurance does not cover this event, you will have to pay the costs yourself.

This trip ends in a different place from where one begins. For that reason we offer a car transport service for those travelling to the Netherlands by car. Your own car will be driven by a driver from the start location to the end location of the trip. This way, at the end of the trip, you can immediately drive home without having to go back to the starting location by public transport to pick up the car.

We offer this car transport service in collaboration with our partner Easy Way. This service can be selected in the booking form.

The car will be delivered to the end location one day before you check out from the last hotel, between 08:00 and 16:00. If you prefer to receive the car on a different date, please mention this at the time of booking. The following conditions apply to this service: - You have to leave your car keys at the hotel reception where the journey begins. Any parking charges of the hotel must already be paid at the reception, so that the driver does not have to pay these costs. - The car must have a full tank. - The car must be at least third party insured. - Easy Way is not liable for damage, except for any clearly demonstrable direct damage, but with a maximum of € 10,000 per event. Easy Way is not liable for indirect damage. - Dutch Biketours and the relevant hotels are not responsible for damage. - We need to know the brand/model of car and the license plate. The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number, also known as chassis number) of the car and the country of issue of the license place are also required if the car does not have a Dutch license plate.

If you choose the car transport service, you automatically agree to the above conditions.

If you do not have the vehicle data at hand at the time of booking, you can also pass this on to us at a later date.

We had a lovely cycling holiday, thank you! All your arrangements were perfect. Our only suggestions would be:

  • an instruction leaflet be included with the mileage counter
  • an 'Allen' key be provided so that the handlebars can be repositioned.

The weather was glorious and the countryside beautiful.

...This was the third time we have used Dutch Bike Tours in a row and each time I have been well impressed by the whole package and that is why we come each year. I do hope to return again next year. The choice of Hotels are superb and the routes very good...

...We had a great trip thank you. The hotel was perfect - excellent room and lovely food - and the staff were helpful and friendly. The bikes were fine and the maps were easy to follow. We quickly realised we could extend our cycling journey if we wished too. It would have been better to have panniers on the bikes - this is the only negative. Certainly good value for money...

Follow the wildlife - Discover the real Veluwe

The free white bikes available in De Hoge Veluwe park are the ultimate demonstration of the fact that the Veluwe is great for cyclists. But a bike is also an ideal mode of transport for exploring other places in the Veluwe region such as the vast forests, sand drifts and heathlands or surrounding villages and compact towns. Anything goes: a rough and ready mountain bike, a trendy treadmill bike or a comfortable conventional ride. There is a choice of stopping places too: from fair-trade regional food from a farm shop to a Michelin-starred restaurant. Choose the Hanseatic route for old trading routes and towns, the ‘royal route’ past Paleis Het Loo or traverse the ancient landscape of the Renderklippen nature reserve. Or cycle along the banks of the IJssel River or the lakes bordering the Veluwe and enjoy the river landscape. That too is the Veluwe. But most of all – enjoy it!

From one intersection to the next

The network of cycle routes is a system of individual cycle routes that are interconnected by numbered intersections (usually at the crossroads of cycle paths). You can use a map of the cycle route network to plan your own route from one intersection to the next. The network of cycle routes in the Veluwe region was upgraded in early 2017. This has created lots of new routes and intersections, opening up even more opportunities for you to enjoy the Veluwe to the full! Double-check that you’re using the most recent map (from 2017) because, in addition to the creation of new routes, some of the existing routes and intersections have been changed. You can purchase maps of the network of intersections at Tourist Information offices (VVV) or from reception at your accommodation.

5,000 km of cycle paths

We absolutely love cycling in the Netherlands, and the country is renowned for its safe and well-maintained network of cycle paths. There are 35,000 km of cycle paths nationwide, 5,000 km of which are in the province of Gelderland. So you have plenty of choice! In fact, Gelderland has received a five-star rating in the Quality Monitor 2017, making it the Netherlands’ best province for cycling. The splendid countryside, the good network of intersections and the quality of the cycle paths were the deciding factors, so there’s no doubt that the cycling conditions are excellent here!

DE HOGE VELUWE NATIONAL PARK, NETHERLANDS

For most travellers visiting the Netherlands, Amsterdam steals the spotlight. But while the Dutch capital entices millions, the roads less travelled are often more rewarding. De Hoge Veluwe National Park , nestled in the province of Gelderland , offers a perfect diversion from a typical Amsterdam itinerary, allowing you to uncover the uncharted beauty of the Netherlands.

De Hoge Veluwe National Park

In this ultimate guide to De Hoge Veluwe National Park, I will share what to expect during your visit to one of the largest nature reserves in the country.

BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Organised tour, exploring the park, natural beauty, wildlife spotting          , the kröller-müller museum, saint hubertus hunting lodge, food and drink  , visitors’ centre, must-pack items, where to stay.

De Hoge Veluwe National Park

Have you ever yearned for moments of peace and serenity amid the bustling city life? I certainly have. So, when a friend from Amsterdam suggested a trip to De Hoge Veluwe National Park for an authentic Dutch experience, I jumped at the chance.

Exploring De Hoge Veluwe National Park is an opportunity not just to reconnect with nature, but also to delve into the cultural richness of the Netherlands which extends well beyond the iconic canals and coffee shops of Amsterdam (not that I’m dismissing Amsterdam’s undeniable charm, of course).

The park stands as a testament to the visionary ideals of its founders, Anton and Helene Kröller-Müller, who brilliantly united the allure of nature with the arts.

e bike tour veluwe

The Kröller-Müller Museum , nestled right at the heart of the park, houses the second-greatest collection of Van Gogh paintings , as well as a variety of outstanding artworks by diverse painters such as Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, and Pablo Picasso.

For years, art connoisseurs and nature lovers have been drawn to this intriguing blend of natural beauty and artistic expression.

GETTING TO DE HOGE VELUWE NATIONAL PARK FROM AMSTERDAM

National Park, Netherlands

Armed with raincoats and umbrellas (yikes, it rains a lot in the Netherlands), my friend and I decided to drive to Otterlo , a picture-perfect village that serves as the gateway to the park. The car ride took us about an hour.

While most tourists access the park from Otterlo, you can also reach it from Schaarsbergen or Hoenderloo .

Car parks are available at each park entrance for a nominal parking fee. For an additional fee, you can drive within the park.

e bike tour veluwe

The Park is easily accessible using public transport. You can take a train to Apeldoorn , Ede-Wageningen  or Arnhem .

There are buses that connect these stations directly to the park. The Dutch public transport website 9292.nl offers detailed itineraries and travel planning options.

The quickest route to reach the museum from any of these stations is by taxi . The journey should take you approximately 25 minutes.

For a structured experience, consider a guided group or private tour of the park . There are several tour options available, some of which include e-bike rentals . This is especially convenient if you plan to return to Amsterdam on the same day.

You must pay an entrance fee upon arrival. Choose between a park-only ticket or a combo ticket that grants access to the Kröller Müller Museum (I would highly recommended the combo ticket).

Additional information regarding costs and tickets can be found on hogeveluwe.nl .

Cycling is by far the most popular mode of transport in the Netherlands. No surprise that it’s also a popular way of touring the park.

To get into the local spirit, my friend and I decided to rent e-bikes from our hotel in Otterlo.

Despite a comical wobble or two while mastering the art of biking, I loved the thrill of pedalling through the park.

We were able to see a lot more of the surroundings than if we were on foot.

National Park, Netherlands

With around 40 kilometres of cycle paths , you can easily burn off all those extra calories from Poffertjes (Dutch pancakes), stroopwafels, or Tony’s Chocolonely (if you know of a better chocolate, do share!).

e bike tour veluwe

The park offers free White Bikes at various sites, including the Kröller Müller Museum, St. Hubertus Hunting Lodge (Jachthuis Sint Hubertus) and the park’s entrances.

Additionally, you can rent Blue Bikes , which include cargo bikes, rambling carts, and different modified bicycles. More details can be found on hogeveluwe.nl .

If cycling isn’t your preference, the park offers an extensive network of marked walking trails and footpaths.

Keep an eye out for wooden posts that will guide you along rambling routes each marked with a specific colour. Rest assured, these posts will always lead you back to your starting point.

e bike tour veluwe

De Hoge Veluwe National Park boasts unparalleled natural beauty. If you’re a nature lover, you’re in for a treat.

From lush woodlands and expansive heathlands , to shifting sand drifts and vast grasslands , the park features a remarkable variety of landscapes.

As you traverse the winding paths and tree-lined avenues by foot or bike, you never know what hidden gems you will come across next.

e bike tour veluwe

The park is home to a wide variety of flora, including nearly 500 plant species along with various trees such as birches, oaks , and pines .

e bike tour veluwe

A visit in the autumn will reward you with the fabulous sight of the majestic Red Oak trees covered with vibrant red foliage. However, the park is an enchanting destination in all seasons.

e bike tour veluwe

The park’s residents include red deer, roe deer, wild boar, mouflon, red fox, badger , and pine marten .

Notably, the reserve protects unique and endangered species like the moor frog , the great grey shrike , and the grass snake (no need to panic, this snake’s culinary preferences are limited to amphibians!).

e bike tour veluwe

If you’re up for an early morning or twilight adventure, you might just cross paths with the park’s celebrities: wild boars and red deer .

But with a touch of luck and patience, you can spot wildlife at any time while meandering through the park.

Game observation posts scattered across the park offer prime opportunities to watch the animals in their natural habitat.

e bike tour veluwe

Several observation posts within the park offer optimal vantage points for wildlife viewing:

Wildbaanweg and Bosje van Staf  are prime locations to catch a glimpse of the majestic red deer and the mouflon.

Koeverbos (Millelamel) provides an ideal viewpoint for observing a herd of female red deer with their young ones.

Zwarte Veld  is the perfect site for spotting wild boar, male red deer (stags), and roe deer.

Schuilkelder  is an excellent location for spotting wild boar and female red deer.

For a unique experience in September, catch the sight of deer rutting in the wild by booking a rutting tour. For more details, visit hogeveluwe.nl .

ART AND ARCHITECTURE

Throughout the park, you’ll come across many remarkable buildings and sculptures designed by renowned artists, including the sculpture of General De Wet by Joseph Mendes Da Costa and Henry Moore’s Three Upright Motives .

e bike tour veluwe

The Kröller-Müller Museum , located in the middle of nature and within the park’s boundaries, is a sensory feast. It is home to a world-class art exhibition, including the world’s second-largest Van Gogh collection .

As you walk through the museum’s hallways, you will be amazed by the curated selection of works by renowned artists such as Piet Mondrian, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir , and Pablo Picasso .

e bike tour veluwe

During my visit, I couldn’t help but pose next to Café Terrace at Night , one of my favourite Van Gogh paintings.

e bike tour veluwe

You can also explore temporary exhibitions showcasing works by contemporary artists or take a leisurely stroll through the outstanding Sculpture Garden .

Encompassing 25 hectares, the Sculpture Garden is one of the largest in Europe and features works by artists like Auguste Rodin and Henry Moore.

If you need a break, treat yourself to a drink or snack at the museum’s restaurant, Monsieur Jacques . Their mango smoothies are delicious!

The restaurant offers a splendid view of the garden, adding some extra charm to your dining experience.

e bike tour veluwe

Situated in the park’s northern part, the former mansion of the Kröller-Müllers, Saint Hubertus Hunting Lodge , is a masterpiece in its own right.

Designed by the esteemed Dutch architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage in the early 20th century, the mansion’s architecture is complemented by its bespoke interiors and furnishings.

To explore the mansion’s interior, you must book a guided tour – a worthwhile experience for those intrigued by the house’s architecture and fascinating anecdotes about the Kröller-Müllers.

e bike tour veluwe

The area around it is very peaceful and ideal for a relaxing walk.

You can buy tickets for the museum online, at the various entrances to the park, at the Park Paviljoen, at  the Museonder, or at the Theekoepel .

Museonder is a free-entry underground museum that offers an interactive journey through the natural history of the De Hoge Veluwe area.

You can learn here about the park’s diverse ecosystems, animal species, plants, and geological formations through interactive displays, dioramas, and informative panels .

De Hoge Veluwe National Park has several food and beverage options.

The Parkrestaurant , located at the heart of the park and adjacent to the Museum, offers a variety of delicious meals and treats. Weather permitting, you can savour your coffee on the charming patio.

Alternatively, you can dine at the Monsieur Jacque Café Restaurant , located inside the Kröller Müller Museum.

Theekoepel at St. Hubertus Hunting Lodge offers hot beverages, soft drinks, and ice cream.

If you are planning a picnic you can get some food and beverages in the Park Shop or in the Park Paviljoen .

e bike tour veluwe

The ideal starting point for your day in the park is at the Park Paviljoen, which houses an information desk, the restaurant, and the park shop where you can get gifts and souvenirs.

Here, you can also get a park map and themed bicycle itineraries that will help you explore the area.

e bike tour veluwe

The neighbouring Museonder is a great place to start themed hikes and bike trips . Consider taking the Landscape Path . It will take you through various landscapes and to the Kröller-Müller Museum.

Pack comfortable hiking shoes or sturdy walking boots . Given the unpredictable Dutch weather, bring weather-appropriate clothing (you can’t go wrong with layers ), and a raincoat .

Binoculars are handy for wildlife spotting, and a camera for capturing the stunning scenery.

Oh, and don’t forget an insect repellent to keep the pesky bugs at bay.

There are numerous accommodation options if you are looking for an overnight stay in the vicinity of De Hoge Veluwe National Park.

My personal preference is the Hotel de Sterrenberg in Otterlo .

The hotel is situated within a convenient 10 minutes’ drive from De Hoge Veluwe National Park . It offers spacious and tastefully decorated rooms with private balconies.

The on-site restaurant serves gourmet cuisine crafted from locally sourced produce—undoubtedly the best I’ve ever tried in the Netherlands.

e bike tour veluwe

The hotel spoils guests with exceptional wellness facilities, including a spa, swimming pool , and fitness centre.

I hope your visit to De Hoge Veluwe National Park leaves you with unforgettable memories and a deep appreciation for art and nature’s beauty, just as mine did.

If you’ve already had a chance to visit it, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below. I’d love to hear about your own experiences.

6 days - 5 nights 7 days - 6 nights option Day 1 – From Amsterdam and eastbound 45km/28mi or 55km-34mi From Amsterdam you can easily reach the tour start in Abcoude by train or taxi in 20 minutes. Our representative will meet you 10:00 (10 AM) at the railway station for equipment and route instructions, or we can arrange a pick-up in Amsterdam. Day 2 – From the farmlands to the woodlands 40km/25mi or 55km/35mi On the second day of the tour, you cycle from Nijkerk towards the mid-size town of Apeldoorn. Your GPS device will guide you along agricultural farming areas and woods, right through the heart of the green Veluwe region. Apeldoorn is famous for the royal Het Loo Palace with its stunningly beautiful gardens and parklands. Your accommodation lies close to the royal palace. The Dutch often say that the altitude changes here when cycling over the low sand dunes of the Veluwe. But remember this is still Holland: these dunes are only ‘a bridge high’. >> When you want to take more time to explore Apeldoorn and its attractions you can opt for an extra night (view below). Day 3 – To the ‘De Hoge Veluwe’ national park' 25 km / 16 mi You reach Otterlo after a relatively short bike ride through the Royal Forests around Apeldoorn. This quaint little village is located on the border of ‘De Hoge Veluwe’ National Park. It’s very unique landscape was created during the last Ice Age and the park represents one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands. It covers approximately 55 square kilometers, and has a wide topographical range including heathlands, sand dunes and woodlands, supporting a great variety of wildlife and birds. Day 4 – Loop tour through the national park 10 km/6 mi or 35km/22mi Today you have ample time to explore all of the National Park. It has over 37 kilometers of bicycle paths, as well as the famous Kröller Müller Museum (closed on Mondays). The museum has the second largest Van Gogh collection in the world. Masterpieces from Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondriaan are also part of the permanent exhibition. The museum is located only 3 kilometers from your accommodation in Otterlo. You can also visit the St. Hubertus Hunting Lodge in the park for a guided tour. The lodge was designed for the Kröller Müller family by the famous Dutch architect Berlage in 1914. Day 5 – Enjoy cycling to Amersfoort 35km/21mi or 55km/35mi Ready to return westward? Get back on your bicycle and ride the paths, passing through small villages, greeting Dutch cyclists as you pass them by and enjoying the timeless farming landscapes and neat grasslands. The route eventually takes you to Amersfoort. When you arrive early you can explore the historic city center of Amersfoort on foot, to admire its charming little streets, old bridges, city canals and national monuments. The longer route option for today includes cycling over the Utrechtse Heuvelrug (hill ridge). This might sound challenging but in the slopes are not steep and the height of these hills is not more than 75 meters / 230 feet. Day 6 – Return to Abcoude 40 km / 25 mi The final day of this tour heads further west and first takes you over a wooded section, after you have left Amersfoort. During the last 20 km/12mi you enter the lowlands again, with interesting cycling stretches along the mid Holland lakes and the River Vecht. Our representative will meet you at the railway station in Abcoude late afternoon. Or we can arrange one or more nights in a quiet hotel in the historic village center of Abcoude, from where you can easily (20 minutes transfer) make your daily visits to the vibrant city center of Amsterdam. >> Optional extra day between day 2 and 3 To fully discover Apeldoorn and its attractions we can book you an extra night in this town. You may want to visit the royal Het Loo Palace and its beautiful gardens. If you are accompanied by children or when you you simply love watching monkeys at play, check out the Apenheul Primate Park.
