Every Type Of Magic In The MCU & Which Is Most Powerful

Infinity war's best fight scene still hasn't been beaten 5 years later, clea's existence means dormammu's sister can be doctor strange 3's villain.

  • Doctor Strange has played a pivotal role in the MCU's Multiverse Saga and is set for an exciting future.
  • Benedict Cumberbatch has appeared in various MCU projects, including a solo double-bill, two Avengers films, and the MCU's What If...? series.
  • Doctor Strange's backstory includes a tragic past, a stellar medical career, and his journey into the depths of the MCU's Mystic Arts.

Since 2016's Doctor Strange , Benedict Cumberbatch's Master of the Mystic Arts has embarked on some incredible adventures in the MCU . Adapted from Marvel Comics' Doctor Stephen Strange, who debuted in 1963's Strange Tales #110 , Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange has been a core character in the MCU since his debut in Phase 3. Despite being introduced later than many of the MCU's other cornerstone heroes, Doctor Strange played a pivotal role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame , and has become one of the most important figures in the MCU's Multiverse Saga, setting himself up for an even more exciting future.

As well as leading two solo projects in the MCU, 2016's Doctor Strange and 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness , Benedict Cumberbatch has also appeared in a number of other stories. Doctor Strange was crucial to Infinity War and Endgame , and has also made appearances in Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: No Way Home , and has been central to the multiverse-spanning stories of Marvel Studios' What If...? anthology series. Following the conclusion of the MCU's Infinity Saga, Doctor Strange has led the charge into the Multiverse Saga , and his backstory has given the MCU some of its most impressive moments.

All 7 Doctor Strange Costumes In The MCU, Ranked

Doctor Strange is recognized by his robe and the Cloak of Levitation, but he and his variants have donned some other unique costumes in the MCU.

18 A Tragic Accident Inspires Stephen Strange To Become A Doctor (1970s/1980s)

Doctor strange in the multiverse of madness (2022).

Not much is known about Stephen Strange's early life, though based on Benedict Cumberbatch's own age, it could be assumed that Strange was born in the 1970s. Despite nothing being known about his upbringing, a short exchange with his multiversal variant in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness revealed that Strange had a sister, Donna . In their childhood, Donna drowned after falling into a frozen lake, and it was Strange's inability to save his sister that inspired him to become a doctor .

17 Stephen Strange’s Photographic Memory Helps Him Excel At Medical School (1990s)

Doctor strange (2016).

Presumably in the 1990s, Stephen Strange attended medical school at Columbia University, a popular alma mater for Marvel's superheroes. Helped along by his photographic memory, Stephen Strange excelled in medical school, graduating with his MD and PhD simultaneously . He learned all the technical aspects of his prospective job incredibly quickly, but spent years repeating behaviors and learning new ones in order to become the best doctor he could possibly be, inspired all the way by his sister's tragic demise.

Doctor Strange

16 stephen strange & christine palmer meet & briefly date (2000s), doctor strange (2016) & doctor strange in the multiverse of madness (2022).

While working in the ER Department of Metro-General Hospital in New York City, Strange met fellow surgeon Christine Palmer. Since Strange had begun specializing in neurological surgery, focusing his research on the formation of new nerve cells, Strange and Palmer invented a new laminectomy procedure. The pair began dating, but Strange's arrogance and focus on his work drove them apart, though they remained close friends . In an alternate universe detailed in What If...? , Palmer's relationship with Strange ended in her tragic death, marking an Absolute Point that Strange tried vehemently to break.

Rachel McAdams played Christine Palmer in Doctor Strange and its sequel, and also appeared as Palmer's Earth-838 variant and a version of the character in What If...?.

15 Stephen Strange Works Behind The Scenes Of The MCU (2012-2016)

Captain america: the winter soldier (2014) & avengers: endgame (2019).

Although not seen on-screen prior to Doctor Strange , Stephen Strange worked as an expert in his field throughout the entire history of the MCU. 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier revealed that Strange was one of HYDRA's targets for Project Insight, suggesting his work in neurosurgery may have, somehow, posed a threat to HYDRA. During Avengers: Endgame's Time Heist, Bruce Banner's Smart Hulk met the Ancient One in 2012 during the Battle of New York, who revealed that Strange was performing surgery in the city while the Avengers were fighting Loki, reinforcing his dedication to his job.

14 Doctor Strange’s Accident Ends His Medical Career (2016)

In 2016, after successfully performing an operation and saving another patient who'd been shot, Strange prepared himself to speak at an American Neurological Association dinner. On the drive there, Strange canvassed three prospective new patients, but ended up crashing his car while distracted from the road. Although his life had been saved in surgery that lasted eleven hours, Strange's hands suffered permanent nerve damage, making it impossible for him to continue his surgical career . Strange searched for a cure, and began physical therapy, but was met with several dead ends.

13 Doctor Strange Travels To Kamar-Taj & Meets The Ancient One (2016)

Strange was recommended to travel to Kamar-Taj by paraplegic Jonathan Pangborn, who used magic to enable himself to walk. Journeying to Kathmandu, Strange eventually found Kamar-Taj and met Baron Mordo and the Ancient One , with the latter opening his eyes to the true magnitude of the universe and its energies. Strange began training in the Mystic Arts, not only regaining some use of his hands in the process, but also learning about the Time Stone and other dimensions . During this time, Strange built a close friendship with Wong, Kamar-Taj's librarian, who would later become Sorcerer Supreme.

Several different types of magic exist in the world of the MCU. Here's what they all are, and which one of them is considered the most powerful.

12 Doctor Strange Battles Kaecilius & Dormammu With The Time Stone (2017)

While still studying at Kamar-Taj, Strange found himself in New York's Sanctum Sanctorum, where he witnessed Kaecilius, an agent of the Dark Dimension's ruler, Dormammu , murdering the Sanctum's Master, Daniel Drumm. Strange fought Kaecilius and his zealots on several occasions, though managed to outsmart them with the help of the Cloak of Levitation and the Ancient One. Following the Ancient One's death, Strange used the Time Stone to reverse damage Kaecilius had done in Hong Kong , before meeting Dormammu and trapping the entity in a loop until Kaecilius was taken from the Earth.

11 Doctor Strange Helps Thor & Loki Find Odin (2017)

Thor: ragnarok (2017).

After saving the world from the dangers of the Dark Dimension, Doctor Strange began to keep a list of potential threats to reality, which included the Asgardian God of Mischief Loki. When Thor and Loki traveled to Earth to retrieve their father, Odin, Doctor Strange intercepted them. However, upon learning that Thor and Loki would promptly return to Asgard after finding Odin, Strange decided to help their quest, pointing them in the direction of Norway . During this time, Doctor Strange also emplored Wong to teach him about the Infinity Stones.

10 Doctor Strange & Wong Battle Kalkartho (2018)

Avengers: infinity war: the heroes' journey (2018).

As detailed in the Avengers: Infinity War: The Heroes' Journey book, which acted as a prologue to Avengers: Infinity War , Strange was plagued by visions of a tentacled creature named Kalkartho attacking Earth. In an effort to stop Kalkartho's attack, Strange and Wong opened a portal to the Magenta Dimension to use the Bonds of Baelzar, trapping the creature. They traveled to the moon in their astral forms to distract Kalkartho, but ended up fighting it back in the New York Sanctum, though Kalkartho was thankfully pulled into the Magenta Dimension, despite both Wong and Strange almost meeting their ends.

9 Doctor Strange Teams Up With Iron Man & Spider-Man To Fight Ebony Maw (2018)

Avengers: infinity war (2018).

In 2018, Bruce Banner crashed into the Sanctum Sanctorum with news of the Mad Titan Thanos' impending attack. Doctor Strange collected Tony Stark, who Strange and Wong informed of the Infinity Stones. The heroes were soon approached by Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian, two members of Thanos' Black Order , who attempted to steal the Time Stone. Strange was tortured aboard Ebony Maw's ship, but Maw was blasted out into space by the combined efforts of Iron Man and Peter Parker's Spider-Man . Together, the trio traveled to Titan, hoping to have the upper hand by bringing the fight to him.

8 Doctor Strange Battles Thanos On Titan, But Gives Up The Time Stone & Is Killed (2018)

After meeting the Guardians of the Galaxy on Titan, Strange looked into 14 million possible futures, but only witnessed one in which the Avengers defeated Thanos. When Thanos arrived, the heroes fought him valiantly while trying to relinquish the Infinity Gauntlet. Doctor Strange and Thanos' battle in Infinity War was beautiful, with Strange using the Mirror Dimension, butterflies, and multiplications of himself to try and defeat the villain . However, Strange eventually gave Thanos the Time Stone in exchange for Stark's life, which allowed Thanos to complete his quest and wipe out half the population of the universe, including Strange himself.

Avengers: Infinity War has one of the best fight scenes in the MCU thanks to Doctor Strange and Thanos, and it hasn't been beaten yet.

7 Doctor Strange Returns For The Battle Of Earth (2023)

Avengers: endgame (2019).

After the five-year-long Blip, the surviving Avengers embarked on the Time Heist to retrieve the Infinity Stones and bring back everyone Thanos had killed. They were successful, but 2014's Thanos attacked Avengers HQ only moments later. Facing the Mad Titan and his armies would have been an impossible task for the few Avengers present, but Doctor Strange opened portals across the cosmos to allow all the returned heroes to join the fight in Endgame's Battle of Earth . Strange revealed that Tony Stark would need to sacrifice himself, as he had foreseen, and he was later present at Stark's funeral.

6 Doctor Strange Tries To Help Spider-Man, But Makes Everyone Forget Him Instead (2024)

Spider-man: no way home (2021).

Doctor Strange returned after five years to find that Wong had become the Sorcerer Supreme in his absence. Strange's inferiority complex perhaps drove him to make rash decisions when Peter Parker arrived in the wake of his identity being revealed , as Parker hoped to make everyone forget him. Strange botched the initial spell, instead pulling multiversal villains who knew Peter Parker's identity into the MCU, and though Strange wanted to send them back to their deaths, Spider-Man refused. Later, Parker urged Strange to complete the spell, saving the multiverse, but making everyone forget Spider-Man's identity in the process.

5 Doctor Strange Meets America Chavez & Battles The Scarlet Witch (2025)

Shortly after his experiences with Spider-Man, Doctor Strange attended the wedding of Christine Palmer, though was interrupted during the reception by Gargantos' attack on America Chavez, a multiversal traveler . Strange and Wong defeated Gargantos, and after learning of America Chavez's ability, thought that she would be safe under Wanda Maximoff's protection. However, Maximoff's Scarlet Witch had actually been the one chasing Chavez across the multiverse, hoping to steal her power, so Strange reaching out for her help only brought the Scarlet Witch's wrath down on Kamar-Taj , where Chavez had been given refuge.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness continued on from the ending of WandaVision , which saw the Scarlet Witch using the Darkhold to try and find her sons, Billy and Tommy Maximoff, in another reality of the multiverse.

Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness

4 america chavez & doctor strange travel to alternate realities (2025).

During battle with the Scarlet Witch, America Chavez opened a portal through the multiverse that she and Doctor Strange jumped into. The pair blasted through several different realities in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness , including one inhabited by dinosaurs, one in which HYDRA won, an underwater universe, a reality made entirely of paint, and one which was animated, before finding themselves in Earth-838. There, Strange and Chavez were taken captive by the Illuminati, a team comprising the leaders of other superhero groups, but the Scarlet Witch found them , killed the Illuminati's members and took Chavez back to Earth-616.

Earth-838's Illuminati included Reed Richards' Mister Fantastic, Charles Xavier's Professor X, Maria Rambeau's Captain Marvel, Peggy Carter's Captain Carter, Black Bolt, and Baron Mordo, the Sorcerer Supreme.

3 Doctor Strange Experiments With The Darkhold (2025)

While the Scarlet Witch took America Chavez back home, she sent Doctor Strange and a variant of Christine Palmer to a reality ravaged by an incursion. Strange met his own variant, who had become corrupted by the Darkhold , similarly to the Scarlet Witch. After a brief skirmish, Sinister Strange was defeated, but the original Strange decided to use the Darkhold to dream-walk into the corpse of another of his variants, allowing him to help Chavez fight the Scarlet Witch in his original reality. This perversion of nature left Strange with a third eye, akin to his more evil variant.

2 Doctor Strange Causes An Incursion & Meets Clea (2025)

At some point during the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness , Doctor Strange caused an incursion, which, if left unchecked, has the potential to destroy the multiverse. Strange was given this warning, and called up to help, by Clea, a mysterious sorceress who appeared to him on the street. Clea sliced open a portal into the Dark Dimension, and the pair jumped through together, presumably to deal with Strange's incursion. Charlize Theron played Clea in Multiverse of Madness , adapted from Doctor Strange's love interest, and eventually wife, from Marvel Comics.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' post-credits scene debuted Clea in the MCU, who could open the door for an iconic Doctor Strange villain.

1 Doctor Strange Will Be Returning In Doctor Strange 3

Doctor strange 3 (tbd).

Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange 3 hasn't yet been officially confirmed, but since Doctor Strange is playing such a pivotal role in the expansion of the MCU's Multiverse Saga, it's likely the trilogy-capper will release prior to, or between, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars . Recent speculation has suggested that Doctor Strange 3 may adapt Marvel Comics' intense Time Runs Out storyline , which immediately preceded 2015's Secret Wars event. This would make the potential sequel one of the most important Multiverse Saga projects, and allow Doctor Strange to continue to change the landscape of the MCU.

Doctor Strange 3 doesn't yet have a scheduled release date.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has not shown much of the Sanctum Santorum or the secrets housed within. The strangest house in Marvel Comics holds endless magical artifacts and consists of a series of maze-like rooms – some of which exist in other dimensions.

So here is a guide to tell you all the things Marvel Studios has not told you and answer the question, What is the Sanctum Sanctorum?

The Sanctum Sanctorum first appeared in Doctor Strange (2016) and again briefly in Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). But fans saw it again in the recent trailer for  Spider-Man: No Way Home (December 17, 2021), looking like Elsa from Frozen (2013) had paid Marvel’s magician a visit .

The No Way Home trailer shows Wong (Benedict Wong) leaving the Sanctum for unknown reasons – perhaps heading off to his appearance in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021). This leaves Doctor Strange and Peter Parker AKA Spider-Man (Tom Holland) to get into trouble without his guidance.

What does Wong do in the Sanctum Sanctorum?

Wong is the only other resident of the Sanctum besides Doctor Strange that Marvel fans have seen in the MCU. In Marvel Comics, Wong originally served as Doctor Strange’s problematic manservant. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Wong first appeared in the comics in 1963’s Strange Tales #110 . In the comics, he’s a bit of a stereotype – so much so Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson briefly considered cutting him from the Marvel movie .

Luckily the version of Wong in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a powerful sorcerer in his own right. He is no longer a servant but Stephen Strange’s close ally and teacher. Wong and Strange first met in Kamar Taj where Wong worked as the librarian and Wong has gone on to help defend the Sanctum alongside Doctor Strange – including taking out Cull Obsidian (Terry Notary) of the Black Order in Infinity War . He will be a crucial force for good in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (March 25, 2022).

Location of the Sanctum Sanctorum

marvel doctor strange sanctum sanctorum protective shield

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the three Sanctum Sanctorum were built by the father of the mystic arts — Agamotto  — on magic strongholds, where great cities would eventually grow. They serve as magical focal points and in Marvel Comics the Sanctum was built on the nerve centers of dragon ley lines.

The Sanctum was built on the site where a Native American Shaman cursed the land to bind a chaos-entity known as Tyanon to prevent her access to Earth. The Sanctum was the seventh building built on the land to make use of its powerful magic.

Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum is located on 177A Bleecker St in Greenwich Village, New York. Like 221b Baker Street, where Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes lives, the address of 177a Bleecker Street is a fictional house number on a real street. The real 177 Bleecker Street is a grocery store, with no 177a to be seen. However, Marvel fans have found the Sanctum on Google Maps .

Kamar Taj is the House of Wisdom where Masters of the Mystic Arts are trained. It is not one of the Sanctum Sanctorum (a Latin phrase which means Holy of Holies) however it is an important setting in Doctor Strange’s story. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange travels to the temple at Kamar Taj after he loses the ability to use his hands in a car accident

In Marvel Comics, Kamar Taj is located in Tibet but in the MCU this was changed to Nepal so that the Chinese government would allow the Marvel movie to be released in Chinese theaters . The erasure of Tibet received backlash, especially since it was part of the reason the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) was whitewashed in Doctor Strange , which Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige regrets .

Defense of the Sanctum Sanctorum

marvel comics sanctum sanctorum layout

It is vitally important that the Sanctums and their protective shield around the world are always protected. So much so that when Stephen Strange was kidnapped by Ebony Maw (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) in Infinity War , Wong leaves the rescue to Tony Stark AKA Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) , and immediately returns to the Sanctum.

Should one or more of the Sanctums ever fall, it would allow threats from the Dark Dimension like Dormammu or Shuma Gorath to attack the Earth. The Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer showed that Doctor Strange’s spell could have caused damage to the New York Sanctum, which could lead directly to the events of Multiverse of Madness .

How does the Sanctum Sanctorum protect itself?

The Sanctums have powerful protected wards. However, that has not stopped it from being invaded or destroyed. In the Marvel Comics Midnight Sons , Doctor Strange casts a spell that backfired and the Sanctum Sanctorum exploded . And those protection spells did not stop the Hulk AKA Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) from crashing through the roof on the Bifrost.

There are other protections in place beyond the role of superheroes in protecting it. The design of the window is the Seal of the Vishanti, also known as the Window of the Worlds. The Vishanti are three magical, god-like beings (Omnipotent Oshtur, Hoary Hogarth, and Agamotto the All-Seeing) who act as the magical power source for the Sorcerer Supreme and defenders of the Earth.

The Sanctum is home to many mystic artifacts including the Talisman of Abraxas and Dragonfang. In the comics, it’s also the location of many dangerous texts like the Darkhold and the Book Of Cagliostro. It also serves as a prison for evil beings like Tyanon’s familiar or Mister Misery , who was the living embodiment of all the pain and suffering Doctor Strange has endured as Sorcerer Supreme, which is trapped in the basement.

The three-story Victorian-style brownstone townhouse contains doors to other dimensions. The Sanctum can rearrange itself into an M.C. Escher-ian labyrinth. And some rooms exist in other dimensions and it is notoriously hard to navigate. One Sanctum librarian named Zelma Stanton once got lost almost unleashed the Marvel Zombies into the universe.

  • Sadly, Dr Stephen Strange, a brilliant but arrogant New York City neurosurgeon on top of his game, is more interested in fame and his perfect success rate than saving lives. However, war is brewing over as a corrupt, power-obsessed former disciple and his zealots are bent on unlocking an unfathomable parallel dimension to usher in a new dark era on Earth. With the world teetering on the brink of destruction, can Doctor Strange harness his extraordinary newfound abilities and accept his destiny? — Nick Riganas
  • In Kathmandu, Nepal, the sorcerer Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen) and his zealots enter the secret compound Kamar-Taj and behead its librarian. From the ancient and mystical texts, they steal a ritual from a book belonging to the Ancient One, a sorcerer who has lived for an unknown time and taught all at Kamar-Taj, including Kaecilius, in the ways of the mystic arts. The Ancient One pursues the traitors, and traps Kaecilius in a mirror dimension. But Kaecilius escapes with the pages and some of his followers by opening up a portal out of the mirror dimension. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), an acclaimed neurosurgeon, loses the use of his hands in a car accident. Strange was very proud of his skill, which he had gained after several years of studies and practice. Strange considered himself to be a student of science and had extremely steady hands which allowed him to conduct the most difficult cranial surgeries with utmost precision. After the accident, his surgery required 11 surgical pins to be inserted into his bones and massive nerve damage in both hands. His operation lasted for 11 hours. The recovery is slow and there is still massive tissue damage. Fellow surgeon and former lover Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) tries to help him move on, but Strange, firmly believing he can regain use of his hands, instead uses all his resources pursuing experimental surgeries. Strange submits himself to experimental procedures to help speed up the recovery process, but he cannot gain back any meaningful strength in his hands. World's leading experts give up on Strange. Strange learns from his physiotherapist that there was one case in his career, who was paralyzed from the waste down and after a few years he saw the man walking by him on the street. Strange challenges the physiotherapist to fetch the medical file on the person. After learning of Jonathan Pangborn (Benjamin Bratt), a paraplegic who mysteriously was able to walk again, Strange seeks him out. Pangborn came back from a place from where he was not supposed to. Pangborn says that he even came to meet Strange and Strange refused to see him, as the best doctors do not take on hopeless cases to protect their reputation. Strange begs Pangborn and is directed to Kamar-Taj. Jonathan tells strange that he had given up on his body, but in the presence of his guru, he trained his own mind, and thereby healed his body. In Kathmandu, Strange looks for Kamar-Taj for many weeks. Strange is taken in by another sorcerer under the Ancient One, Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor). The Ancient One says that the spirit of the body can program the cells to self-heal. Naturally, Strange is skeptical and even dismissive of The Ancient One. She compares him to a glass that is already full and hence cannot learn anymore. The Ancient One shows Strange her power, revealing the astral plane and other dimensions such as the Mirror Dimension. She says that the Universe is only one of an Infinite number, and at the root of reality, mind and matter meet. Some Universes are benign and give life, while others are full of hunger and contain evil forces which are older than time itself. Amazed, Strange begs her to teach him, and she eventually agrees despite his arrogance, which reminds her of Kaecilius. Mordo convinces The Ancient One that Kamar-Taj might need a person like Strange if Kaecilius manages to decode the stolen pages and summon the Dark forces. Strange begins his tutelage under the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) and Mordo, and learns from the ancient books in the library, now presided over by the master Wong (Benedict Wong). He learns to harness energy from the infinite multiverses to power spells that create shields and weapons. Strange learns that Earth is protected from other dimensions by a spell formed from three buildings called Sanctums, found in New York City, London, and Hong Kong. The task of the sorcerers is to protect the Sanctums, though Pangborn chose to forgo this responsibility in favor of channeling mystical energy into walking again. Wong tells Strange about Dormammu, the supreme being of the Dark Dimension, who invades Universes, and bring them into his Dark Dimension. Dormammu is a being of infinite power and endless hunger. He hungers for Earth most of all. The ritual that Kaecilius stole was to contact Dormammu and to summon him from the Dark Dimension. Strange advances quickly over several months, even secretly reading from the text Kaecilius stole from and learning to bend time with the mystical Eye of Agamotto. Mordo and Wong warn Strange against breaking the laws of nature, comparing his arrogant yearning for power to that of Kaecilius, who believes, after the deaths of his loved ones, that everyone should have eternal life. Kaecilius and his followers use the stolen pages to begin summoning the powerful Dormammu of the Dark Dimension, where time does not exist, and all can live forever. This destroys the London Sanctum and sends Strange from Kamar-Taj to the New York Sanctum. The zealots then attack there, where Strange holds them off with the mystical Cloak of Levitation until Mordo and the Ancient One arrive. Strange and Mordo become disillusioned with the Ancient One after Kaecilius reveals that her long life has come from her own use of Dormammu's power. Kaecilius mortally wounds the Ancient One, and escapes to Hong Kong. The Ancient One tells Strange that he, too, will have to break the rules, to balance Mordo's steadfast nature. She then dies, despite the best efforts of Strange and a bewildered Palmer. Strange and Mordo arrive in Hong Kong to find Wong dead and the Sanctum destroyed, with the Dark Dimension already engulfing Earth. Strange uses the Eye to turn back time and save Wong, before creating an infinite time loop inside the Dark Dimension that traps himself and Dormammu in the same moment forever. After killing Strange many times to no avail, Dormammu reluctantly agrees to leave Earth if Strange undoes the time loop, taking Kaecilius and the zealots with him. Disgusted by Strange and the Ancient One's disregard for the consequences of defying nature, Mordo departs. Strange returns the Eye, which Wong calls an Infinity Stone, to Kamar-Taj, and then takes up residence in the New York Sanctum to continue his studies. In a mid-credits scene, Strange decides to help Thor, who has brought his brother Loki to Earth to search for their father Odin. In a post-credits scene, Mordo confronts Pangborn and takes the energy he uses to walk, stating that Earth has "too many sorcerers".

History [ ]

Founding [ ].

The Masters of the Mystic Arts were founded by Agamotto thousands of years ago. Following his discovery of other dimensions , Agamotto found ways to draw power from these alternate universes to create magic spells. Realizing that these dimensions could also present existential threats to Earth , Agamotto established the Masters of the Mystic Arts: a league of sorcerers dedicated to safeguarding the world from extradimensional evil.

Threats the Masters were trained to combat included dark sorcerers, ghosts, demons, and dark gods that would enter their universe with malicious intent. The greatest multidimensional force to ever threaten Earth was Dormammu , ruler of the Dark Dimension , who sought to absorb Earth's plane into his own. To aid in their mission, the Masters created three sanctums in New York City , Hong Kong , and London respectively, generating a ward that kept Dormammu from passing through.

The Masters acquired the Time Stone and swore an oath to protect it with their lives, containing it within the Eye of Agamotto . [1]

Another threat that came through was the E'kolith , which started to rule Earth and make human sacrifices, although one of the Masters of the Mystic Arts managed to banish it. [2]

Retrieving the Dark Scepter [ ]

Wong had been tasked with locating and securing the Dark Scepter by the Ancient One . An object of immense power, the Scepter had been stolen by a woman who had grown scornful against the world. Wong tracked her down to London and attempted to take the Staff from her. However, the power of the Dark Scepter proved to be strong and the woman managed to escape. Back at Kamar-Taj , Kaecilius scorned Wong for losing the woman and the scepter, but Wong insisted that with the power that the woman possessed with the Scepter, the situation should be handled more reverently.

Kaecilius claimed Wong's concentration on his own failings was the reason the mission was not a success. Daniel Drumm and Tina Minoru then arrived and told Kaecilius that Wong's trepidation should be a sign to be careful and heed his instincts rather than just insult him. When Kaecilius asked why they were not doing their other duties, Drumm told him the situation proved serious enough that more than one member of the order was needed to subdue the thief. Kaecilius refused and claimed that he could handle the thief himself. Wong, Drumm, and Minoru later arrived to find an unconscious Kaecilius who had been beaten by the thief, having underestimated the power of the Staff.

Kaecilius realized the others were right and decided to team up to stop the thief. Later at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, the group confronted the thief. In a grueling battle, with their combined efforts they were able to overpower her and claim the Scepter. Wong put it with all the other mystical objects at the New York Sanctum . [3]

Retrieving the Arrow of Apollon [ ]

When the Bow and Arrow of Apollon were separated, the Masters of the Mystic Arts kept tabs on the relics. Jiāo'ào Zhànshì stole the bow, and terrorized a village named Guizhou in China to find the arrow. They found the arrow and destroyed several buildings within the village, prompting Karl Mordo and the Ancient One to go to Guizhou. They demanded that Zhànshì give them the bow and arrow, but Zhànshì refused and fired at them. The Ancient One deflected the arrow, surprising the Dragon Raiders and leading to a battle, which Mordo and the Ancient One easily won. The Ancient One convinced Zhànshì to hand the bow and arrow over, so it was placed safely in one of their sanctums. [3]

Disillusion with the Ancient One [ ]

Kaecilius began to grow discontent with the truths that he was being taught by the Ancient One . Failing to find peace or acceptance in the death of his wife , he grew angry that his attempts to delve into magic that would restore what he had lost were rebuffed by the Ancient One. This disillusion reached its zenith when he discovered that the Ancient One was sustaining her life force and extending her lifespan by drawing upon the energies of the Dark Dimension, the dominion of Dormammu , a clear violation of the tenet of preserving the natural law. Reaching out to other disaffected practitioners amongst the students of the Masters, he began to indoctrinate them on the ways that the Ancient One was holding them back. They formed a group known as the Zealots , with the mission of obtaining the most guarded secrets of the Ancient One. [1]

Angered by his proposition, Dormammu destroyed Strange by blasting him with energy. However, Strange reappeared and repeated his bargain. Confused by his reappearance, Dormammu killed the confident Strange over and over again to no avail. Strange explained that using the Eye of Agamotto , he created an infinite time loop which trapped Strange and Dormammu in the Dark Dimension forever, using a force that didn't exist in that dimension until now, which made the primordial being his prisoner. Dormammu then begged to release him from the time loop, where he agreed to spare Earth if he took Kaecilius and the Zealots to the Dark Dimension and never return.

Spider-Man Multiversal Crisis [ ]

Later on, Wong and Doctor Strange witnessed a blizzard in Siberia come through the Rotunda of Gateways into the New York Sanctum . As Sorcerer Supreme, Wong took frequent trips to Kamar-Taj . That November, Wong found that Peter Parker was inside the Sanctum. Strange met them and asked Parker what he owed the pleasure. Parker asked him to go back in time and reverse Mysterio 's actions in exposing his identity. Strange told him he no longer had the Time Stone and expressed concern about the space-time continuum regarding the recent Time Heist . However, he proposed the Runes of Kof-Kol , although Wong disagreed, telling him that the spell dealt with known and unknown realities. Strange pleaded with Wong, stating that he had used the spell in Kamar-Taj once during a party, and that Parker had been through a lot as it was. Wong reluctantly agreed, stating he wanted nothing to do with it, and departed via portal for Kamar-Taj again.

Strange took Parker below the Sanctum to an ancient room with walls that were thousands of years old and were the intersection of cosmic energy currents. Strange prepared the spell, stating that the world was about to forget Parker's existence. Alarmed, Parker asked Strange to make allowances for certain people. As a result, the spell became unstable and Parker continued, stating that everyone who knew of his identity before to remember. Due to the unstable spell, a fissure in the Multiverse formed, causing a massive tremor to shake the Sanctum. Strange managed to contain the spell and store it inside an ancient relic known as the Macchina di Kadavus . Angry that Parker had caused the spell to become unstable, Strange proceeded to remove Parker from the Sanctum.

Soon after, Strange detected a presence unknown to his universe and tracked it down to the sewers, finding the Lizard . Strange then used his magic to transport the Lizard into a holding cell underneath the Sanctum. After this, Strange used his Sling Ring to transport Parker and Doctor Octopus there, with Doctor Octopus put inside a holding cell also. Strange told Parker that due to the unstable spell, universe-displaced people had come through the fissure and entered their universe. He tasked Parker with finding the others and gave him a device to transport them to the cells. When Parker asked for help, Strange went off and found his friends, Ned Leeds and Michelle Jones , and brought them there. He told them to work in the undercroft and left them to investigate.

Later, Strange returned to the undercroft and holding cells to use the Macchina after seeing that they had been successful in finding Electro and Sandman . When he spotted Norman Osborn with Parker, Leeds, and Jones, he transported him into a cell. Strange then proceeded to start the ritual to send the universe-displaced to their universes. However, Parker interjected and grabbed the Macchina, before using the device to put Strange in a cell. Strange walked out of it and pursued Parker outside the Sanctum, using his Sling Ring to catch Parker in portals. When that failed, he pushed Parker into the Astral Dimension but due to Parker's Spider Sense, that attempt failed also. Strange then threw the Cloak of Levitation at Parker and opened up the Mirror Dimension , where he could have control. As Strange chased Parker throughout the Dimension, he used his Sling Ring to cast Parker into a series of portals, while the Cloak tried to get the Macchina. When Parker collided the portals together, it shattered the Dimension, transporting them to the Grand Canyon , and the Macchina was dropped. Strange grabbed the Macchina and prepared to leave through a portal, until Parker used his webbing to tie Strange up, grab the Macchina and Sling Ring, and leave Strange in the Dimension.

Twelve hours later, Strange was released through a portal cast by Leeds, who had used his Sling Ring, and arrived at the Statue of Liberty . Strange took possession of the Macchina and his Sling Ring again, before finding Parker and meeting his two variants , just as the Lizard had been cured and reverted to his human form. They were then attacked by the Green Goblin , who grabbed the Macchina and planted one of his Pumpkin Bombs inside of it. Strange used an Eldritch Whip to recover the Macchina, only for it to detonate, destroying the Macchina and unleashing the unstable spell, which created a dimensional rift opening the Multiverse, and causing the scaffolding of the Statue to fall. As Strange tried to seal the fissures, the Cloak left him to rescue Leeds, who had fallen. The Cloak then returned to Strange and Strange watched as infinite number of universe-displaced people started entering their universe. Parker told Strange to perform a second spell, one that would erase everyone in their universe memory's of him. Strange asked if he was sure, and Parker agreed, saying his last goodbyes as Strange performed the spell, sealing the fissure in the Multiverse, returning those universe-displaced back to their universes, and wiping everyone's memory of Parker. In late 2024 , Doctor Strange had, what he thought was a dream, a vision of his variant and a girl running from a being in an unknown location . Later that day, Strange tended to a disturbance within New York City and found himself dealing with Gargantos , a one eyed tentacled being from the Multiverse .

When Strange was knocked out, Wong arrived and fought Gargantos, only to be captured. Strange returned and freed Wong, and managed to find a way to defeat the being. Afterwards, Strange and Wong met the girl, who was named America Chavez and learned she could travel the Multiverse. [7]

Siege of Kamar-Taj [ ]

Wong transported himself and America Chavez to Kamar-Taj and waited for Doctor Strange ’s return. When Strange returned, he spoke to Wong, Chavez, and a group of Masters telling them that Wanda Maximoff had become corrupted by the Darkhold and that she had become the Scarlet Witch. Wong the. explained the Scarlet Witch’s history and commanded that Kamar-Taj become a fortress. He ordered that the students stop their training at the moment and prepare alongside their teachers to defend Kamar-Taj.

Rintrah then announced the arrival of the Hong Kong Master and London Master , who answered Wong’s call for backup. As the Masters got in position with their magic arrows, cannons, and mystical shields , a protective barrier was formed around the perimeter.

The Masters then watched as a large dark cloud appeared in the sky and descended above them, revealing Maximoff at the center. Strange flew up to speak with her, but failed to persuade her to stop her mission. She blasted the perimeter and continued to do so, until she used her telepathy and astral form to break a young Master’s focus, causing him to run and disrupt other Masters’, allowing for the protective shields to be let down.

Maximoff then began blasting Kamar-Taj, until she was blasted herself by a fire cannon. Maximoff angrily destroyed the cannon, knocking out Sara Wolfe in the process. She proceeded to throw the archers off their buildings and created fires in the courtyards. Strange and Wong told the Masters to fall back to safety as Maximoff descended upon Kamar-Taj, creating a huge blast that destroyed the foundations and killed several Masters.

Strange and Wong went to see Chavez, who had been hiding in a room with Hamir and another Master. Strange then set up a trap involving the Mirror Dimension in which Maximoff fell into. However, she managed to break free, taking Hamir and the other Master out of the room, before using a reflective gong to enter. She defeated Strange and Wong easily and began taking Chavez's power until Strange leaped in the way and fell into the star-shaped portal with Chavez. [7]

All Of Doctor Strange's Powers And Abilities Explained

Benedict Cumberbatch Doctor Strange casting spell

Doctor Stephen Strange is among the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As the Sorcerer Supreme, he's tasked with safeguarding Earth from magical threats and beings of immense power. Take Dormammu, the big bad from his 2016 eponymous film, "Doctor Strange." Inside his native Dark Dimension, he's a being of uncharted power, capable of absolute mastery of existence within. When Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen) summons the Destroyer of Worlds with the missing pages of the Book of Cagliostro, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is able to defeat him with a bit of trickery and a piece of costume jewelry.

Alright, in fairness, that was actually the Eye of Agamotto, which contains the Time Stone, but perhaps that is better way of making the point. Strange, a mere mortal with only months worth of magical training, is able to wield an Infinity Stone in order to defeat an extra-dimensional, god-tier being. Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), is part Celestial and couldn't wield the Power Stone unaided, relying on Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), and Rocket (Bradley Cooper) to help distribute the burden of its energy.

Like the late Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), aka Iron Man, we've wondered what is Doctor Strange's job exactly, besides making balloon animals? Strange says it's to protect reality, which got us wondering exactly how he's able to take on such a monumental task. After much pondering, we've come up with a list of everything we've seen him do in the MCU. These are all of Doctor Strange's powers and abilities, explained.

Astral projection

Doctor Strange Ancient One astral forms

One of the first acts of magic to which Stephen Strange bears witness is his astral form being pushed out of his physical body by the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) at Kamar-Taj . At first, he thinks he's been drugged and asks his host what was in the tea he'd just drank, assuming it was a hallucinogen like the mushroom psilocybin. She assures him it's just tea, with a bit of honey, before taking him on an incredible, mind-bending journey — and subsequently kicking him out on his butt.

During his training, Doctor Strange takes advantage of astral projection to increase his knowledge in a unique form of studying: he reads the ancient tomes at his disposal while his physical form sleeps. He advances so quickly that Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is surprised at the "litany of spells" he was able to master in order to use the Eye of Agamotto. Strange's explanation is his photographic memory, which enabled him to earn an MD and PhD simultaneously. We're guessing that his mind continuing to work while his body rests had a little bit to do with it as well. Of course, Stephen wasn't just hitting the books in his astral form. He fought one of Kaecilius' disciples in the astral plane at the hospital, popping in and out to give Dr. Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) instructions — and scaring the bejeezus out of her — as she worked to save his life.

Somewhere along the way, Wanda Maximioff (Elizabeth Olsen), aka the Scarlet Witch, must have taken a cue from Doctor Strange, because we see her doing the exact same thing — studying in the astral plane — at the end of "WandaVision."

Traveling via portals

Christine Palmer closet Stephen Strange portal

One of Stephen Strange's first tasks at Kamar-Taj is to learn to open portals with the use of a Sling Ring. The Sling Ring, when used adeptly, allows one to travel across the world like they're walking through a doorway. But Doctor Strange just can't seem to get it right, insisting his unsteady hands are to blame. At that point, the Ancient One brings out Master Hamir (Topo Wresniwiro), who promptly dispels any notion of Strange's hands being the problem when he effortlessly opens a portal, despite missing his left hand from the wrist down. Strange eventually gets the whole portal thing down when the Ancient One leaves him to die of exposure atop Mount Everest if he's unable to conjure a portal to safety.

Just like astral projection, Strange uses portals to advance his studies of the mystic arts; when librarian Wong (Benedict Wong) refuses to allow him to check out certain books he feels are too advanced, Strange just conjures a portal into the library — which is forbidden — to take them surreptitiously. The crafty old librarian may have been confused for a bit but clearly figured it out eventually, evident in the Ancient One's knowledge of the transgression — seriously, Wong told on him?

These portals serve more purpose than just acting as an instant inter-dimensional Uber, of course. Strange used one to nab Loki (Tom Hiddleston) when he and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) were standing on the sidewalk in New York City in "Thor: Ragnarok."

Shield spells

Benedict Cumberbatch Doctor Strange shield spell

As seen throughout the MCU, pretty much whenever the masters of the mystic arts are around, adepts are able to use magic-based energy shields to ward off enemy attacks, defending against both mystical and physical assaults. According to the MCU Fandom site, they're referred to as "Tao Mandalas." Wait, what? Breaking that term down etymologically, it references two different concepts from Eastern religions and-or mysticism. In the context of Taoism, "tao" has several meanings, the most relevant is likely "the way"; these teachings come from Lao Tzu (also Laozi), the ancient Chinese philosopher to whom the Tao Te Ching is traditionally attributed (via the  Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy ). Though it's not particularly helpful for our task of analyzing the meaning of the shield's name, "tao" is impossible to conceptualize in abstract and is something that must be experienced as the flow of life.

As for "mandala," it's not just a beautiful geometric design from an adult coloring book; as the Merriam-Webster Dictionary tells us, it is "a Hindu or Buddhist graphic symbol of the universe." Combining those two elements suggests that, essentially, Doctor Strange and his fellow mystics are channeling magical energy flowing throughout the universe into shield forms.

As first seen in 2016's "Doctor Strange," Stephen Strange's shields are mostly reactionary; when fending off Kaecilius and his followers, his Tao Mandalas are practically instinctual. Director Scott Derrickson told Vulture they brought on a special choreographer to teach the actors the art of tutting. "I wanted it to be in the action, I wanted it to be more organic, and that seemed to lead me to this idea that magic is about movements and gestures."

Weapon spells

Kaecilius Doctor Strange eldritch whip

Obviously Stephen Strange is able to use magic for more than just defense. This isn't Daniel LaRusso's vision of Miyagi-do karate, after all; we're talking about dealing with cosmic threats to the balance of the universe, not butting heads with the rival Cobra Kai dojo. One of the earliest weapons we see the title character use in "Doctor Strange" is referred to as the Eldritch Whip, as "Doctor Strange" visual effects supervisor Stephane Ceretti told 3D-World in 2016. "It looks like a stream of energy with lots of sparks, and when it hits something it sears and burns," he said.

We're hoping the "whip" part of that term is pretty self-explanatory and anyone who's dipped even a fraction of a toe into the works of H.P. Lovecraft should recognize "eldritch" as a word meaning  strange, unnatural and otherworldly. Unlike the most rudimentary forms of the Tao Mandalas, the Eldritch Whip — which also requires the Sling Ring — looks like takes a bit more practice and concentration to pull off, which is probably a good thing; there's no sense knowing how to attack someone or something without knowing how to defend against a counterattack.

Remember the choreographer we mentioned when discussing shields? "We hired him to do all the choreography, so he taught Tilda and Benedict and Mads. It's very specific and very deliberate and super-cool," director Scott Derrickson told Vulture . "In fact, he's in the movie. He's the very first guy in the opening scene, who forms the magic whip ... It was all very detailed and designed and he was awesome. I'm really glad we used him."

Interdimensional travel

Mordo Doctor Strange mirror dimension

As he grew more adept in his magical abilities, Stephen Strange needed somewhere safe to practice his spell casting. As such, the Ancient One showed him how to enter the Mirror Dimension. It's a parallel plane of existence that looks much like our own but anything Doctor Strange does while there will not affect the physical world. "Harry Potter" fans can think of it as an infinite Room of Requirement for Dumbledore's Army to learn Defense Against the Dark Arts and "X-Men" fans might liken to the Danger Room, except it's not just limited to a broom closet in a mansion in Westchester, New York.

As the Ancient One explains, it's also a place where masters of the mystic arts can trap other beings, provided the don't have a Sling Ring, which is critical to entering the Mirror Dimension. In the first act of "Doctor Strange," it's where she sends Kaecilius and his fanatics when they steal the page from the Book of Cagliostro that explains how to summon Dormammu . It's also where Stephen Strange tries to send them when they attack the New York sanctum. The problem with that idea is he didn't realize that, in channeling energy from the Dark Dimension, they have grown more powerful in the Mirror Dimension and can fold and bend reality with ease, making it difficult for Strange and Mordo to escape.

The warping of the Mirror Dimension was specifically inspired by a renowned Dutch graphic artist. "The idea became, 'What would a chase scene be like inside an M.C. Escher world?' Not just to present it as an exterior canvas, but to actually be inside of it, in motion," director Scott Derrickson told the L.A. Times .

Stephen Strange levitation cloak

In addition to his ability to cast spells, born out of months of learning and effort, Doctor Strange also gets some additional benefits from his keen fashion choices. While that tuxedo he was planning to wear to the medical conference may have turned heads, he eventually acquired a cloak that could likely snap necks.

As Mordo tells him, eventually he will get to use relics that will grant him powers; they're able to do so because they were imbued with magic too powerful to sustain. Mordo himself is rocking the Vaulting Boots of Valtorr; when Strange asks when his turn will come, his mentor goes full-Ollivander and offers the MCU equivalent of "the wand chooses the wizard." "You're ready when the relic decides you're ready," Mordo says.

Well, the relic in question decided Stephen Strange was ready when Kaecilius was absolutely mopping the floor with him. When Dormammu's disciple was tossing the title character around the New York sanctum like a rag doll, he wasn't exactly concerned with keeping it tidy. One of the many things he smashes was the case containing a red cloak, which Mordo later tells Strange is the Cloak of Levitation. In addition to granting the wearer the namesake ability, the cloak also appears to have a will of its own, which is why it's able to save Strange when Kaecilius knocks him over the rail for what looks like a solid 15-foot drop. It's also how the cloak is able to steer the good doctor away from the battle ax he tries to grab in favor the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak relic which imprisons his enemy.

Time manipulation

Doctor Strange eye of agamotto

Courtesy of another relic, Stephen Strange is able to manipulate time, rewinding events so as to rearrange the timeline and affect the eventual outcome of a given situation. The relic in question is the powerful Eye of Agamotto, created by the first Sorcerer Supreme, Agamotto, who also first established the sanctums that the master of the mystic arts use to safeguard the earth. Whether or not its creator was aware of it, the Eye is powered by the Time Stone — as Wong tells us in "Doctor Strange" — which explains why it's so darn powerful.

After all, how else would Doctor Strange been able to pause and rewind the action on the streets of Hong Kong? It's not like reality is a DVR — though, if it was, the Eye of Agamotto would be one of the world's most amazing universal remotes. In addition to an impressive parlor trick of scrolling through the stages of an apple being eaten and its core decaying — which was simply meant to display what the Eye can do — Strange uses it to trap Dormammu in an infinite loop; though the Devourer of World's exists without the flow of time in the Dark Dimension, when on Earth, he must play by our rules. As such, Strange commits himself to dying infinite deaths in order to force Dormammu to abandon his quest to conquer the Earth.

When Strange surrendered the Time Stone in "Avengers: Infinity War," Thanos used it to wipe out half of all life in the universe before destroying all six Infinity Stones. If Captain America (Chris Evans) truly returned all the alternate Stones in "Avengers: Endgame," then Doctor Strange will seemingly no longer have this ability.

Casting protective spells over objects

Doctor Strange Ebony Maw brick wall

With an item as powerful as the Eye of Agamotto — and the Time Stone within it — within his possession, Stephen Strange would surely need to go to some length to make sure it's not taken from him. Although he's plenty powerful, he understands that it's likely someone more powerful will come along to try to take it off his hands. Enter Bruce Banner through the roof of the New York sanctum; he tells Doctor Strange and Wong that Thanos is coming. After explaining who the Mad Titan is — you would think Doctor Strange, who keeps a watchlist of potential threats, would have heard of him — they enlist Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.)

After Stark and Strange exchange barbs and debate the merits of destroying the Time Stone vs. protecting it, Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian render the argument meaningless by dropping in on Greenwich Village in search of it, in turn trashing part of the city. Although Ebony Maw gets the better of Strange and eventually abducts him from Earth aboard Thanos' Q Ship, it's pretty clear he can't access the Time Stone. In fact, when he tries, it burns him; as the good doctor explains, were Ebony Maw to kill him, he'd find removing the spell "troublesome." The simple but unbreakable warding spell Strange put on the Eye of Agamotto is likely the only reason he survives the first act of "Infinity War," as Ebony Maw changes tack and takes the Sorcerer Supreme along for the ride to torture him in the hopes of eventually taking possession of the Time Stone.

Benedict Cumberbatch Doctor Strange looking into future

Another trick Doctor Strange can do, courtesy of the Eye of Agamotto, is look into the future. He's not the first Sorcerer Supreme to do so, mind you. Though she doesn't reference the relic by name, the Ancient One tells the good doctor during their chat in the astral realm that she spent "years peering through time," looking at that exact moment outside the hospital but unable to see past it. She claims to have forestalled "countless terrible futures," one after another, and none of them went further than that exact moment in time. In addition to humanizing her, the scene sets up one of the other abilities granted by the Eye.

While on Titan, with Tony Stark and Peter Parker (Tom Holland), aka Spider-Man, having a confab with the remaining Guardians of the Galaxy, Strange is off in the corner doing his thing. He appears to be meditating, levitating in a yogic position with an aura of green energy surrounding him and the Eye of Agamotto glowing brightly. Mantis (Pom Klementieff) is the first to notice, asking Stark if Strange often does that — not that he'd know. When Strange emerges from his trance, he explains that he went forward in time in order to see every outcome of the upcoming battle — just over 14 million possible futures — of which they only win one.

Much like his ability to manipulate time, Doctor Strange appears to be unable to look forward in time in the MCU's current continuity, absent a relic that contains some version of the Time Stone. Time will tell if he somehow regains those abilities.

Benedict Cumberbatch Doctor Strange time stone

It's unclear if Doctor Strange's magical abilities have any respect for scientific principles like the law of conservation of mass or the first law of thermodynamics, because he seems to just pull things out of thin air sometimes. We see it happen in one of the "Doctor Strange" post-credits scenes — later adapted into a scene from "Ragnarok" — when he sits down with Thor to talk about his aforementioned watchlist and his adopted brother Loki's (Tom Hiddleston) place on it. When they sit down in those comfy-looking armchairs, Strange offers the God of Thunder tea; though Thor insists he doesn't drink tea, a cup appears in his hand anyway.

That, however, amounts to nothing more than an impressive parlor trick, akin to pulling rabbits out of hats. Doctor Strange's ability to conjure comes into play in much more dire circumstances during "Infinity War." After using the Eye of Agamotto to glimpse the future and the one possible way in which the forces of good are actually able to stop Thanos, Strange seems to have removed the Time Stone from the locket by the time the Mad Titan snatches it from around his neck, declaring it a fake. In truth, Strange has concealed the Time Stone using magic and only reveals it when Thanos is about to kill Tony Stark. The Bleecker Street Magician conjures the Time Stone after the Battle of Titan, bargaining with Thanos to spare Tony Stark's life, as it was part of the one-in-14 million chance they had to win in the end.

Transmutation

Chris Hemsworth Thor staring beer mug

On top of making things appear and disappear, Doctor Strange can change them into something else altogether. That cup of tea he summoned for Thor in the New York sanctum? When the self-proclaimed strongest Avenger informed the good doctor that he doesn't drink tea, the cup magically became a liter of beer, which is much more Thor's speed. He was further amazed — and no doubt pleased — to learn that the mug refilled itself as he emptied it. When Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) crashes through the roof of the sanctum during the first act of "Infinity War," Strange's mystical wardrobe, Cloak of Levitation and all, instantly takes on the form of normal street clothes. Once again, however, this is more along the lines of what we expect from professional illusionists, not the peak powers of the Sorcerer Supreme.

Want to get impressed? Once more in "Infinity War," during the Battle of Titan, Thanos forces Doctor Strange to pull out all of the stops. When the former uses the Infinity Gauntlet to send an actual black hole at the latter, Strange's spell transforms it into a swarm of delicate blue butterflies. We're unsure of the significance of the actual butterflies — though Strange did seemingly see a monarch butterfly in space , courtesy of the trip the Ancient One sent him on during his first solo movie — but we're guessing the act of transmuting a super-dense, all-consuming vortex from which not even light can escape into a bunch of pretty insects is pretty significant in and of itself.

An array of other tricks

Doctor Strange duplicates fighting Thanos

Doctor Strange has a few more tricks up his magic sleeves as well. Though each of these is only seen a single time, they're worth at least a passing mention. During the events of "Ragnarok," when Thor is looking for the Allfather, Odin (Anthony Hopkins), Strange plucks a single strand of hair from the God fo Thunder's mighty mane. This act — to which Thor does not take kindly — was for the sake of casting a locator spell that would transport Thor and the still-falling Loki through a portal directly to their father.

Strange also uses a couple of one-off tricks in "Infinity War" — during the Battle of Titan — one of which is a different form of the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, one more loyal to their use in Marvel comic books. Quite different than the usual mystic energy forms Strange uses as shields and weapons, the Crimson bands of Cyttorak are bright red, setting them apart from the bright yellow-orange color of the Tao Mandalas and Eldritch Whip, respectively. Strange pulled them out during the combined attack, seeking to bind Thanos' right hand to prevent his use of the Infinity Gauntlet. When Iron Man and Spider-Man attempt to get it off his hand, Strange restrains the Mad Titan's left hand.

Having failed to get the gauntlet off his hand, Strange later displays an ability to duplicate himself. Dozens of Doctors Strange attack Thanos with multiple Eldritch Whips. Their combined might was no match for the trademark purple blast of the Power Stone, however, as each of the duplicates was dispatched after Thanos attacked with the Infinity Gauntlet.

The Runes of Kof-Kol

Doctor Strange performing spell

When squeaky little Peter Parker is feeling down on himself for problems he kinda-sorta is responsible for, he seeks supernatural assistance to erase it all in "Spider-Man: No Way Home." Peter hopes Doctor Strange can make everyone on Earth forget he was ever Spider-Man so he can escape his newfound celebrity. For some reason, the former Sorcerer Supreme agrees. While this seems like something Steven normally wouldn't even entertain, he had to so we could get a cameo-packed film out of it.

Stephen and Peter head down to the Sanctum's expectedly drab basement, and orange sparks begin flowing. Doctor Strange performs The Runes of Kof-Kal — a spell that would fulfill Peter's exact aforementioned specifications. To put it simply, the Runes wipe the memory of those specified in the spell for a set period of time. According to Wong, the Runes of Kof-Kal travel "the dark borders between known and unknown realities." This initial warning should have made it a no-go, but arrogant Stephen gives it a whirl. The sorcerer didn't account for how annoying Mr. Parker could be, as the latter kept chiming in during the spell, changing his request. He doesn't want those closest to him — MJ, Ned, Happy, Aunt May — to forget his identity. Peter's interruption of the spell mid-progress allows people from other realities to crossover into ours. This only goes for people who know who Peter is, having the somewhat opposite intention of what the Runes of Kof-Kal are meant. Therefore, we get multiple villains from former Spidey flicks crossing over into the MCU, as well as two other Web-Slingers.

Since most of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" is a result of a botched initial Kof-Kal attempt, its finale sees Strange complete it correctly. The rules apply to everyone this time, including Ned, MJ, and Happy, and the film concludes with their memories Peter-wiped as well as everyone else on Earth. The Runes of Kof-Kal also send the reality trespassers back to their respective universes. The villains fade away reformed, while Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spideys head back to their realities.

The Master of the Mystic Arts Returns to Reshape Your Reality in New 'Doctor Strange' Series

Jed mackay and pasqual ferry launch a new 'doctor strange' ongoing series this march..

Jed MacKay ’s acclaimed work on the Doctor Strange mythos has captivated readers over the past year, and this March, a thrilling new chapter begins. Spinning out of the character’s terrifying demise in DEATH OF DOCTOR STRANGE and Clea ’s time as Sorcerer Supreme in STRANGE comes an all-new ongoing series for Stephen Strange where he’ll resume his duties as Marvel’s Master of the Mystic Arts!

This time around, MacKay will be joined by superstar artist Pasqual Ferry , known for his stylish work on recent titles like NAMOR: CONQUERED SHORES and SPIDER-MAN: SPIDER’S SHADOW . These two talents have devised a grand plan for Doctor Strange centered around a shocking mystery that strikes at the very heart of Strange’s legacy and purpose.

The journey that follows will harken back to the iconic hero’s psychedelic and otherworldly storytelling, taking readers to places only Strange would dare to go and introducing enemies only he could hope to defeat, including a brand-new threat that Strange shares a personal connection with. In honor of this new saga, Doctor Strange will be donning a revamped costume designed by the legendary Alex Ross , who will also be gracing the series with breathtaking covers!

Stephen Strange is back! Reunited with Clea and Wong , it’s back to business as usual for the Sorcerer Supreme. Have your children fallen into a deep nightmarish slumber? Are demonic refugees invading your home? Is your husband possessed by a satanic entity? Then call Doctor Strange! But when someone else begins to issue their own dark justice on Strange’s mightiest foes, Strange embarks on an interdimensional search for answers, only to discover the culprit may be closer to home than he thinks…

"After DEATH OF DOCTOR STRANGE, after STRANGE, we open the next act in our ongoing saga of the Sorcerer Supreme in DOCTOR STRANGE #1 !” MacKay proclaimed. “It's been really exciting to have the opportunity to not only continue exploring the magical side of the Marvel Universe with the inhabitants of 177A Bleecker Street, but to follow the lives of the Stranges as the last year and a half has put them through the wringer. Pasqual has been putting together a truly magical book, and I'm super psyched to show people what's in store for Stephen and Clea Strange—and of course, we won't be giving them any time off after recent events..."

“When I started working for Marvel a long time ago, there were three comics I had always wanted to draw: FANTASTIC FOUR, SPIDER-MAN, and DOCTOR STRANGE,” Ferry said. “Why Doctor Strange? Because his stories include all the elements I love as an artist—the fantasy, science fiction, and imagination. Above all, the fact that I could look at Steve Ditko ’s work as a reference really motivates me! When he drew Doctor Strange, all the utopian and imaginary sceneries  were incredible. So this is a very special moment in my career, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the character is going to take us with this new narrative. I know a lot of artists, including myself, consider Doctor Strange a challenge, like there is a need to add something new to the character because it offers you that possibility. For me, Doctor Strange is a big challenge, but I embrace it.”

Disney Magic Explained

The ship has 20 bright yellow lifeboats which, along with the black, red, and white colors of the ship itself, match the colors of Mickey Mouse. This change from the standard safety orange took a waiver of international maritime rules. [2] As with other Disney cruise ships, the ship's horn blast plays a snippet of " When You Wish upon a Star ". [3] Disney Magic s "godmother" is Patricia Disney, former wife of Walt Disney 's nephew, Roy E. Disney .

Planning and construction

Disney had cruise ship designs drawn up by February 1994. [4] Disney Cruise Line in 1995 ordered Disney Magic and Disney Wonder from Fincantieri in Italy. The ship was built in two halves with the bow built at Fincatieri's Ancona shipyard and the stern at their Marghera shipyard.

The planned maiden voyage was for March 12, 1998. [5] In January 1997, the first ticket for Magic 's first trip was raffled off on Lifetime channel , while ticket sales would begin in September 1997. Delays on the construction of MS Rotterdam kept additional workers from the Magic . Thus, by November 1997, the cruise line initially rescheduled the ship's initial voyage to April 30, 1998. However, further delays from suppliers and poor weather conditions at Fincantieri pushed back the maiden voyage even further by a few months. The bow was towed to the Marghera shipyard where the halves were joined.

Itineraries

With livery and design evocative of the RMS Queen Mary , [6] Disney Magic set sail on her maiden voyage on July 30, 1998, out of her home port, Port Canaveral in Florida. The ship's initial cruises were to Nassau, Bahamas with a stop at Disney Cruise Line 's Castaway Cay over three to four nights.

Originally, from 2000, Disney Magic had been undertaking weekly cruises to Castaway Cay and the Caribbean islands out of Port Canaveral. [7] [8]

In May 2005, Disney Magic was dispatched to the West Coast as part of Disneyland 's 50th Anniversary celebrations and as a test for California expansion. The transfer cruise sold out quicker than expected. Bookings from first time Disney cruisers were up for these cruises by at least 60%. [9]

In May 2007, Disney Magic started her inaugural Mediterranean cruises out of Barcelona , Spain. At the end of the summer, she returned to her home port of Port Canaveral. [10] In the summer of 2008, Disney Magic was moved to Los Angeles once again. [11] The ship returned to Barcelona in 2010 for another summer of Mediterranean cruises, as well as several northern European cruises before again returning to Port Canaveral in September. [10]

In May 2012, Disney Magic was relocated to New York City, where she sailed 8-night cruises to the Bahamas, New England , and Canada . In September, she was relocated to Galveston, Texas for the remainder of the year and offered 4-night Caribbean cruises, 6, 7, and 8-night Western Caribbean cruises, and 8-night Bahamian cruises. [12] In June 2013, Disney Magic was re-positioned to Barcelona for the summer. [13]

Disney Magic was put in for an overhaul at Navantia shipyard, Cadiz, Spain . [14] In October 2013, Disney Cruise Line completed renovations to the ship, [15] including updates to the ship's cabins, lounges, restaurants and spa and introduced new features including; "Marvel's Avengers Academy", a play area based on Marvel 's Avengers characters , the AquaDunk and the AquaLab, consisting of a pool and waterslide. [16] The short-lived Carioca's restaurant replaced Parrot Cay, which would later be replaced with Rapunzel's Royal Table in 2018. Club Disney Junior replaced the Mickey Mouse Club and other changes were made. [17]

In 2010, Disney Magic sailed Disney Cruise Lines' inaugural Northern Europe itineraries, homeported in the port of Dover , 70 miles from London, England . She sailed to Norway, the British Isles , and the Baltic Sea during her brief three month season. With the October 6, 2017 cruise from New York to the Bahamas, Disney Cruise Line held its first Marvel Day at Sea. [18]

During the COVID-19 pandemic , Disney Magic was anchored in Dover , England on and off from May 2020 and was due to stay until at least August 2021. [19] At that time, she sailed a series of "staycation cruises" (no port visits or excursions, subject to restrictions) exclusively in the United Kingdom. [20] [21] UK cruises concluded on October 4, 2021 when Disney Magic repositioned to Miami, Florida and commenced cruises to the Bahamas. Then, in the summer of 2022, she returned to Europe for European cruises before returning to the US for the fall.

In May 2023, Disney Magic completed a three week dry dock maintenance period in the Bahamas, followed by trials and operations from San Juan, Puerto Rico , serving the Southern Caribbean and ABC iteneraries.

Entertainment

Entertainment on Disney Magic includes live Broadway-style shows with many Disney characters at the Walt Disney Theater, the Buena Vista movie theater, which features both Disney films and first-run movies, several night clubs and lounges, several pools, and many Disney-themed parties and celebrations, including a Sail-Away Celebration, Pirate Night, and sometimes a Marvel or Star Wars Day at Sea.

On the ship's forward funnel, there is a 24-by-14 foot LED screen known as the Funnel Vision , due to its location on the rear of one of the ship's funnels, where guests can watch various movies and shows either from the deck or from inside Goofy's Pool.

Shows from the Walt Disney Theatre may include: All Aboard , Let The Magic Begin , Twice Charmed: A Twist on the Cinderella Story , Tangled the Musical , Disney Dreams: An Enchanted Classic , [22] and A Final Farewell Show . Former shows included Villains Tonight! , which was replaced by Tangled . [22]

Disney Cruise line is known for pioneering the rotational dining setup, in which guests and their wait staff rotate through three differently themed restaurants throughout their cruise. The Disney Magic s restaurants include Lumiere's (serving primarily French Cuisine), Rapunzel's Royal Table (serving German-inspired food), and Animator's Palate (which is present on three of the other Disney cruise ships). Additionally, the upscale, adults-only restaurant Palo, situated at the rear of the ship, requires a separate reservation and serves high-end Italian cuisine.

Youth Clubs

The ship features a nursery, Oceaneer Club, Oceaneer Lab, Edge, and Vibe for kids entertainment. [23] In December 2023, Disney Cruise Line abrubtly changed the age ranges for Oceaneer Club and Lab from 3-12 to ages 3-10, with some guests receiving less than a week notice of the change without any option to cancel or re-book. [24]

The following contains major spoilers for Doctor Strange #9, on sale now from Marvel Comics

Doctor Strange's family just got bigger with the introduction of a new Master of the Mystic Arts.

Doctor Strange #9 (by Jed MacKay, Pasqual Ferry and Heather Moore) finds the titular hero in his darkest form yet, having taken on the evil energies of the Trinity of Ashes to go to war with a twisted version of his future self -- General Strange. Before the General can summon his ultimate weapon to destroy the heroes, Clea Strange takes it upon herself to free her newborn sister from the villain's machinations, letting loose a whole new Master of the Mystic Arts with her entire future ahead of her.

Doctor Strange's Long-Lost Brother is Back - And Deadlier Than Ever

The version of Doctor Strange known as General Strange was the culmination of the War of the Seven Spheres, a mystical war waged across thousands of years and dimensions primarily between the benevolent Vishanti and the Trinity of Ashes. Though Strange spent centuries fighting willingly for the Vishanti, the moment the war ended with a ceasefire General Strange turned on the Vishanti . This led him to be imprisoned within a crystal that was left in the care of the primary Doctor Strange, whose recent untimely demise unwittingly broke the crystal's hold over his villainous variant.

Since then, Doctor Strange and Clea have fought back against General Strange in whatever way they can. While Doctor Strange took it upon himself to barter with the Trinity of Ashes for the power to strike his variant down, Clea attempted to end the General's life in a far more direct fashion. When Clea's attempt at murdering General Strange didn't take, it opened the door for the primary Doctor Strange to show off his newfound abilities in explosive fashion.

Marvel’s Crypt of Shadows Adds a Horror Edge to Two Iconic Characters

Introduced alongside the titular villain of 1964's "The Domain of the Dread Dormammu!" (by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko) from the pages of Strange Tales #26, Clea hails from the Dark Dimension where she was born. In the years since her introduction, Clea has served as both a mentee and love interest. Though there is no official name for or guardian of the baby sister Clea has set free, it can be assumed that the child has inherited the same set of abilities that other Faltines command by their very nature.

Doctor Strange #9 written by Jed MacKay with art by Pasqual Ferry, colors by Heather Moore, and letters by VC's Cory Petit. Main cover art is by Alex Ross, with variant covers courtesy of Romy Jones and Pete Woods. Doctor Strange #9 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The 10 Most Badass MCU Heroes, Ranked

It can be both fun and frustrating to pick one's favorite heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are so many ways to rank them: who’s the strongest, who’s the most powerful, or even who’s the funniest. But if one had to decide which hero is the most badass, that could be another battle entirely. After all, "badass" isn't exactly the word that comes to mind when thinking of characters like Hawkeye in movies like The Avengers .

What makes a hero badass is having a certain attitude or stride to carry; it does not mean being ruthless or unhinged, but rather being confident in their abilities when overcoming anything; looking cool while doing it is a plus. A badass MCU hero can demonstrate strength, ferocity, wit, and courage . Several characters, like Captain America or Thor, have proven it, as have several other heroes, but who in the MCU is the most badass of them all?

10 Rocket Raccoon

Voiced by bradley cooper; portrayed on set by sean gunn.

The Guardians of the Galaxy made their onscreen debut ten years ago and have since become fan favorites. Among them is the wisecracking Rocket Raccoon, who stands not quite tall but still larger than life. There is also no denying that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is his movie, as it dove deeper into his backstory. Cynical and prideful yet heartfelt and intelligent, Rocket is easily the most badass member of the ragtag team of self-proclaimed “losers.”

Rocket’s high intellect and weapons proficiency unofficially made him the go-to guy whenever the Guardians need something done—like putting together a bomb in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 . He can also show prowess in battle, as proven throughout seven films, most notably Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame . But what makes Rocket the most badass is his newfound ability to empathize with his loved ones; whether it’s Groot, his fellow Guardians, or even Thor, Rocket is cool because he cares.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Played by ryan reynolds.

Wade Wilson, AKA Deadpool, has officially entered the MCU chat! Well, yes and no. As shown in the latest hit Deadpool & Wolverine , the Merc with a Mouth crossed over into other universes thanks to the Time Variance Authority. While he chose to remain in his timeline and has yet to meet any of the Avengers or Guardians , Deadpool is a fairly new but still badass entry into the MCU.

Deadpool has grown to become one of the most popular onscreen comic book characters thanks to the incredible performance of Ryan Reynolds and faithfulness to the source material. For all of his shenanigans, Deadpool has masterful skills as a fighter, leading to destructive and often hilarious results, like using Logan’s corpse to fight the TVA and catching bullets in his guns. The super-violent, foul-mouthed, pop culture-referencing, fourth-wall-breaking anti-hero has truly demonstrated how far he can go when it comes to kicking major butt .

Deadpool & Wolverine

8 daredevil, played by charlie cox.

Being a daredevil is badass. Being the Daredevil is even more badass. Despite being blind, Matt Murdock’s greatest strengths lie not necessarily with his skills as a “really good lawyer” but rather in his other heightened senses. As the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, he uses these abilities to fight crime in New York City, ensuring that justice is served. For nine years, Charlie Cox has proven he is not one to cross in a fight, whether dressed in all black or in the classic red/yellow uniform.

Daredevil has been on quite a journey throughout the MCU. From the well-choreographed fight scenes on both the former Netflix series and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law to something simple like catching a brick without flinching in Spider-Man: No Way Home , his share of cool moments have not gone unnoticed . With the rebooted series Daredevil: Born Again due to debut in Disney+ next year, there is so much more to look forward to. Until then, Daredevil remains a badass.

Not available

7 Black Panther

Played by chadwick boseman.

The late Chadwick Boseman gave the performance of a lifetime as T’Challa, King of Wakanda and the Black Panther, across four films. T’Challa had a lot to work with after the sudden death of his father, T’Chaka ( John Kani ), but he strived and succeeded with the support of his kingdom, a suit made of vibranium, and the power of the heart-shaped herb. Although fans will no longer see him in future MCU installments, the legacy of T’Challa’s Black Panther remains strong and filled with badass moments.

T'Challa’s development from a vengeful prince to a more progressive and diplomatic king struck an emotional cord with fans, particularly in Black Panther . His ability to be relatable came from his display of dignity and respect, as well as having a big heart. But his combat skills, memorable entrance when reclaiming the throne from Killmonger ( Michael B. Jordan ), and leadership of the Wakandan army against Thanos ( Josh Brolin ) are what made Black Panther both a badass ruler and badass hero .

Black Panther

6 doctor strange, played by benedict cumberbatch.

When the Doctor is in, expect some badassery in the form of magic. Doctor Stephen Strange was an exceptionally skilled surgeon until a car accident rendered him incapable. He then discovered the Mystic Arts, which led him to a new calling to use magic to protect the Earth and the multiverse. In each of his MCU appearances, Benedict Cumberbatch brings charisma and poise to his portrayal of the Sorcerer Supreme — even when he loses the title due to the Blip.

What makes Doctor Strange stand out is how strong of a learner he is; he became a doctor through studying and practice. In Doctor Strange , he used the same tactics when learning about the Mystic Arts at Kamar-Taj. He’s also a fast learner, best demonstrated when going up against Dormammu in the Dark Dimension, teaming up with the Avengers on Titan, and even facing a variant of himself on Earth-838. Strange has now become a key resource of knowledge and insight when facing greater threats in the MCU. Not only can you say badass, but also… bewitching.

Doctor Strange

5 captain america, played by chris evans.

Where to begin with everyone's favorite star-spangled hero? Steve Rogers starts as a scrawny kid from Brooklyn before becoming the famed super-soldier known as Captain America, who fought for truth, justice, and loyalty. Chris Evans played Captain America across a trilogy of movies and became an instant pop culture icon. From his enhanced strength to the iconic shield, Captain America has become not only a strong core member of the Avengers but also a key component to the success of the MCU.

Now, Cap may seem like an earnest boy scout at first, but what makes him a true badass lies in his courage, morality, and selflessness. When he says, “I can do this all day,” it means more than just trying to show off and sound tough. No matter how many times he gets knocked down, he will get back up. Rogers remains unafraid when standing up to bullies and fighting for the greater good. His muscles and shield might give him an extra boost, but Captain America’s humanity is why he won't back down from a fight.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

4 captain marvel, played by brie larson.

Speaking of captains, Carol Danvers swooped in to become one of the many unsung heroes of Avengers: Endgame . Played by Academy Award-winner Brie Larson , Danvers made her debut in 2019’s Captain Marvel and was established as one of the most powerful characters in the MCU. She already has a badass origin story, but mixing that with the incredible powers due to an accident made her the cosmic hero known today.

Danvers’s exposure to the Tesseract granted her super-strength, energy absorption, and flight. However, she only gets the true extent of her powers once removing an implant given by the mighty Kree empire , resulting in the incomparable Captain Marvel. From there, she helped other planets across the galaxy and aided the Avengers subdue and defeat Thanos. While staying level-headed, Danvers also keeps her charm. With her various abilities, Captain Marvel is usually in complete control and looks cool while doing it.

Captain Marvel

3 wolverine, played by hugh jackman.

Just like Deadpool, this one also counts! Hugh Jackman has appeared in ten movies as Wolverine since 2000. However, his return to the role in Deadpool & Wolverine marks a significant change; Wolverine has now been integrated into the MCU , and Jackman plays a different version from his Fox Studios counterpart. Despite this version being dubbed “The Worst Wolverine” by Mr. Paradox ( Matthew Macfadyen ), Jackman still kicks major ass as the clawed Canadian mutant.

For Marvel fans—and Deadpool himself—this team-up has been a long time coming. Jackman easily stepped back in like nothing had changed; Logan was still the brooding and reluctant mutant that fans are familiar with. But despite being haunted by tragic mistakes and filled with regret, he was granted a second chance thanks to the Merc with a Mouth and became the hero—nay, the X-Man—that he was supposed to be. Whether Jackman will play Wolverine again is up in the air, but fans can rest easy knowing he’s still a badass.

Played by Chris Hemsworth

The scene in Avengers: Infinity War where Thor arrives in Wakanda with Rocket, Groot, and a new weapon called Stormbreaker is one of the most thrilling moments in modern cinema . It’s just one of many badass Thor scenes in the MCU, but this is what cemented him as the MVP of the Infinity Saga. With the gravitas and pathos brought by Chris Hemsworth 's performance, the Asgardian God of Thunder is a mighty force to be reckoned with.

Thor has had quite a journey throughout his movie appearances; he’s lost his hammer (more than once), mother, father, friends, brother (also more than once), homeland, girlfriend, and—for a while after killing Thanos—his way of life. One would think he’d be nothing more than a broken man by now, but Thor always persists . Although he is a literal God, what makes him a badass is his will to fight for what he believes in and who he loves.

Avengers: Infinity War

Played by robert downey, jr..

It all started with Iron Man, and while the Infinity Saga ended with him, his legacy continues as the most badass hero of the MCU. Playing Tony Stark and donning the Iron Man suit was not only a monumental career shift for Academy Award-winner Robert Downey Jr. , but it ushered in a new era of superhero cinema. At the end of 2008’s Iron Man , Stark could’ve concealed his identity from the world, but his daring reveal set an incredible and badass precedent for things to come.

Despite being a self-described genius-billionaire-playboy-philanthropist, Tony Stark has dealt with a lot of hardship throughout his decades-long story arc. From his capture by the Ten Rings to the attack on his home, his failure with Ultron, the fallout of the Avengers breakup, almost losing Pepper Potts ( Gwyneth Paltrow ), and watching Peter Parker ( Tom Holland ) getting dusted away, there has been so much pressure on him to keep things together. It had to be him making the ultimate sacrifice to save the universe , proudly proclaiming that he is, in fact, “Iron Man” one last time. Downey Jr. will return to the MCU as Dr. Doom , which will surely stain his legacy as Iron Man, but for now, he is still the franchise's best and most badass hero.
