Where to go next after beating the Pastoria Gym in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Image of Bianca Versoza

After winning your battle against Crasher Wake in the Pastoria Gym, the game barely gives you a hint as to where you should be going next. Taking the right path to Route 213 will just lead you to Valor Lakefront then back to Veilstone City, and there’s nothing going on in the Safari Zone.

However, the game’s Town Map destination marker is still in Pastoria City. So, where do you go?

Where to go next after beating the Pastoria Gym

Your next step is to talk to the Team Galactic grunt beside the Safari Zone entrance. Yes, he ignores initially, but once you have the Fen Badge, he will notice you and try to run away.

You need to follow him to Route 213 and, eventually, to Valor Lakefront. You battle him there. Like most Grunts, it’s a fairly easy one.

Cynthia bumps into you after and asks for a favor that will take you to Celestic Town. There’s a small and secluded Underground beneath it. Celestic Town is also where you’ll get TM95 Surf automatically.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: How to Find Thunder Stones (& Every Pokemon They Evolve)

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl players hoping to get Raichu or Jolteon are going to need a Thunder Stone or two. Here's where to find them.

Having a strong electric-type Pokemon can be incredibly useful during Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl , particularly in Pastoria City, where players come up against the games' fourth gym leader, Crasher Wake . A Pikachu, for example, can make very light work of his three Pokemon, though, as is often the case, the Pokemon's evolved form, Raichu, could take care of things even faster due to its higher base stat totals and more powerful move set.

RELATED: Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: How to Find Fire Stones (& Every Pokemon They Evolve)

Sadly, however, obtaining a Raichu isn't quite as simple as just leveling up a Pikachu, as the iconic yellow rat is one of three electric-types that require a Thunder Stone to evolve in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl . This means that those hoping to get the very best out of their Pikachu are going to need to track down one of these elusive Evolution Stones, with a few different options available to them when it comes to where to look.

Where to Find a Thunder Stone in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl players looking to get their hands on a Thunder Stone can do so in a number of places. Perhaps the easiest is in Sunyshore City , where one can be found in the southeastern part of the city not far from the big lighthouse where players find Volkner . There's another one hidden in one of the rooms in the Solaceon Ruins to the east of Solaceon Town and one more on Route 229 near the southwest part of the big pond.

Alternatively, players can farm Thunder Stones by digging in the Grand Underground . It can be a rather time-consuming process, but as players will need to find as many as 42 Mysterious Shards to complete all of the activities at Ramanas Park, they'll probably pick up quite a few Thunder Stones anyway during the process. Should they end up with more than they need, they can always sell the stones at a Poke Mart for a little extra cash.

Pokemon That Evolve Using a Thunder Stone in Brilliant Diamond Diamond & Shining Pearl

  • Pikachu -> Raichu
  • Eevee -> Jolteon

Due to Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl only including Pokemon up to gen 4, the games feature just three Pokemon that evolve using a Thunder Stone. The first of these, Pikachu can be found in the Trophy Garden area, which is located behind the Pokemon Mansion on Route 212 . Eevee is the second of the games' Pokemon that evolves using a Thunder Stone, and will be given to players by Bebe in Hearthome City once they've seen every type of Pokemon in Sinnoh and had their Pokedex upgraded by Professor Oak. Last but not least is Magneton , whose unevolved form Magnemite can either be found in the Grand Underground or at the Fuego Ironworks factory.

Today's Wordle Hints & Answer - May 8, 2024 (Puzzle #1054)

Amazon prime celebrates its fallout series by handing out yet another free game, today's connections hints & answers for may 8, 2024 (puzzle #331).

Happiny is one of the most unique baby Pokémon available in  Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl , particularly for how trainers can evolve it. Happiny was first introduced in the world of Pokémon when the original  Pokémon Diamond  and  Pokémon Pearl  were released, and it was one of the few baby Pokémon that trainers could obtain easily in-game. By speaking with an NPC hiker in Hearthome City just before the exit to Solaceon Town, trainers could receive an egg that would hatch into Happiny.

Unlike Munchlax in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl , Happiny is still available for trainers to get via the same method that was featured in Diamond  and  Pearl.  Happiny is the baby Pokémon of the Chansey line, making it a Normal-type Pokémon with an affinity for caretaking . Happiny is called the "Playhouse Pokémon," which aligns with its caretaking instincts and the nature of both Chansey and Blissey.

Related:  Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: Great Marsh (Safari Zone) Guide

For the majority of baby Pokémon, players can typically expect them to evolve after they reach a certain level or friendship level. However, Happiny is the only baby Pokémon that trainers need to find an item for in order to evolve it. After hatching the Happiny egg, players will need to find an Oval Stone in Pokémon BDSP , give it to Happiny to hold, and level Happiny up during the daytime in order for it to evolve into Chansey.

How To Get The Oval Stone & Evolve Happiny In Pokémon BDSP

The easiest way to get an Oval Stone in Pokémon BDSP is by going into the Lost Tower and picking it up on the second floor. The Lost Tower is south of Solaceon Town on Route 209, which means players can grab the Oval Stone shortly after receiving the Happiny egg. Happiny's egg requires players to walk 10,000 steps before it can hatch, unfortunately. However, hatching the Happiny egg can be done more easily if players have a Pokémon with the Flame Body ability  in their party. Outside of battle, a Pokémon with Flame Body has the passive ability to hatch eggs faster for trainers, so long as that Pokémon and the egg are in the trainers' party.

After hatching and evolving Happiny, Chansey can evolve further into Blissey once Chansey's friendship level is high enough in  Pokémon Brilliant Diamond  and  Shining Pearl.  Blissey isn't particularly strong on offense, but it has more HP than any other Pokémon and great Special Defense stat to match it. Although it might not seem like much, a Blissey with the right moveset can be a highly valuable Pokémon to use in the competitive scene.

How to take down the electric-type gym leader

Volkner as he appears in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Volkner is the last gym leader in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl , and he’s a electric-type specialist in Sunyshore City. Our Sunyshore gym leader guide will assist you by listing out his party and recommending counters that you can find nearby.

Sunyshore City gym challenge

To get to Volkner, you’ll need to press buttons to turn gears and create a path. As usual, the puzzle is pretty straightforward, as there’s only one direction to go. You’ll need to battle several trainers to get to Volkner, and you’ll be able to tell if you’re on the right track if you’re continuously battling the trainers.

Volkner’s Pokémon

Volkner is an electric-type specialist, but only half of his Pokémon are actually electric-type. He uses the following:

  • Raichu , level 46, electric
  • Ambipom , level 47, normal
  • Octillery , level 47, water
  • Luxray , level 49, electric

Raichu knows Surf, and Luxray knows Ice Fang — both moves that are super effective against ground-type Pokémon. Octillery also knows the ice-type move Aurora Beam, meant to counter any grass-type Pokémon you may use against it.

Volkner counters

Since Volkner only uses two electric-types, countering him may be annoying. Both of his electric-types come ready to counter ground-type Pokémon, so you’ll need to be careful and take them out quickly before they hit you.

For Ambipom, you can use fighting-type moves and for Octillery, you can safely use electric-type moves.

Here are some counters you can use:

  • Hippopotas, ground Ruin Maniac Cave (Route 214)
  • Quagsire, water/ground Route 212, Safari Zone
  • Machoke, fighting Route 210, 211

Volkner gym rewards

Once you beat Volkner, you’ll be able to use the HM Waterfall outside of battle, so you can scale any waterfalls you find in the wilderness. He’ll also give you several copies of TM57 , so you can teach your Pokémon Charge Beam , an electric-type attack that may also raise the user’s special attack. You’ll also get some stickers to decorate your Poké Balls with.

Safari Zone Gate

Johto Safari Zone Map.png

The Safari Zone Gate (Japanese: サファリゾーンゲート Safari Zone Gate ) is a bazaar located to the north of Route 48 , which is accessed from Cianwood City via Route 47 . It was introduced in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver .

Pokémon Trainers often come here in order to catch Pokémon in the Safari Zone .

Places of interest

Johto safari zone.

The Safari Zone is a special Pokémon preserve where Trainers can catch certain types of Pokémon. It is owned by Baoba , the owner of the former Kanto Safari Zone , which was, by then, made into a Pal Park by his son. However, Baoba later passes ownership of the Safari Zone onto the player .

For $ 500, the player will receive 30 Safari Balls . Akin to previous Safari Zones, there is a large area to cover, but the six areas of the Zone can uniquely be rearranged to suit the player.

When a wild Pokémon appears, no Pokémon may be sent out to battle it; catching Pokémon here, as in all Safari Zones, requires sheer luck. There are four options in the battle screen: throw a Safari Ball, throw Bait, run away, and throw Mud. Throwing Bait makes a Pokémon less likely to run, but makes it harder to catch, while throwing Mud does the reverse, making it easier to catch but more likely to run.

Demographics

The Safari Zone Gate's population is 13.

In Weavile Wobbles But It Won't Fall Down , Silver arrived at the Safari Zone Gate in order to get clues from Lance 's whereabouts, having received a clue from Clair involving the Safari Zone, Plates , and Arceus . After a brief encounter with Eusine , Silver was dragged along with the crowd into the entrance building, where he figured that he could just as well try to find clues at the Safari Zone itself, and possibly also catch some rare Pokémon.

All HM locations in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl

Image of Ryan Galloway

One of the major changes between the original Pokémon Diamond and Pearl games and the remakes Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl is how HMs are handled.

Traditionally, Hidden Machines (known as HMs) are moves that players will find along their adventure and can teach Pokémon in their party to help them get through environmental obstacles or to travel long distances.

In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond , Shining Pearl , HMs are no longer given to the player as a reusable tool to teach the move to multiple Pokémon. Instead, the move is now given to players as a single-use TM and also loaded into their PokeGear where they can summon wild Pokémon to help them out with the ability at any time.

Players still need to venture through the campaign to unlock these abilities. Here is where you’ll get each of these important moves.

You don’t need to do anything special to gain access to these abilities as they are handed to players as they progress through the story of the game.

  • Cut – Players will be gifted Cut after entering Eterna City and conversing with Cynthia.
  • Fly – You can earn Fly after entering Team Galactic’s warehouse base in Veilstone City.
  • Surf – This move can be found in Celestic City after you’ve defeated Team Galactic in the Ruins. If you check out the paintings on the walls Cynthia’s grandmother will enter and grant you the move Surf.
  • Strength – Strength is found at the peak of The Lost Tower which can be located on Route 209.
  • Defog – Defog can be located at the Great Marsh Gate near Pastoria City by talking to the Green haired person on the right after entering the Great Marsh.
  • Rock Smash – This is the first HM you’ll get in the game and it can be earned simply by entering Oreburgh Gate. A Hiker will gift you the move at the entrance, but you won’t be able to use it until you defeat the first gym.
  • Waterfall – Players can earn Waterfall after they defeat Vokner, the eighth gym leader. Once this is done, head to the beach at Sunyshore City and speak to Jasmine.
  • Rock Climb – Head to route 217. Within the snowstorm area, you’ll find a cabin. Once inside, speak to the Hikers. Upon exiting, you’ll see items in the snow, which includes TM100 Rock Climb.
