Château Tour le Pin

Chateau Le Pin

Pomerol - the thienpont family.

Château Le Pin, or simply Le Pin, is a Bordeaux wine from the appellation Pomerol.

Madame Laubie, whose family had owned the plot since 1924 sold the one hectare vineyard in 1979 to the Belgian Jacques Thienpont for 1 million francs. The vineyards were developed by Jacques Thienpont whose family own the neighbouring Vieux Château Certan, and the wine was produced in tiny quantities from a farmhouse basement. The property was already called Le Pin from a solitary pine tree that grows near the winery.

At the time of the sale, the cellars Le Pin were in poor condition. The chai was nothing more than a shed that had been used to store gardening tools. The dilapidated house on the property needed work. Before Alexandre Thienpont took up residence at the estate after he was married, the small house at Le Pin was where he lived for a period of time.

Today the estate comprises 2,7 hectares in one contiguous vineyard surrounding the winery. In 2011 a new winery, designed by the Belgian architectural practice Robbrecht en Daem architecten, was inaugurated using small microcuves and gravity to move the wine. Château Le Pin is considered by some a predecessor of the "garage wines", although this idea is rejected by many, including by the proprietors, on the basis of the merits of the terroir, and the absence of extreme measures to compensate for mediocre grapes.

Occasionally the most expensive wine in the world, continually receiving high wine ratings from wine critics and produced in extremely small numbers, Le Pin bottles are a constant presence on the wine auction market. The winery is currently managed by Jacques Thienpont, and additional tiny plots of land have been acquired.

The vineyards extend over 2.0 ha of sandy gravel topsoil on a bedrock of limestone, with a grape variety of 100% Merlot the vines averaging 38 years of age.

Typically 600 to 700 cases are produced per year, although in 2003 no wine was produced because of the drought and heatwave that year.

Château Le Pin

Until the 1980s, the flag of the small region of Pomerol was held high by only a few châteaux, first and foremost Château Pétrus, but in the following years, several châteaux have aspired to challenge the uncrowned king of the Pétrus region. One of these crown princes is without question Château Le Pin. The story of Le Pin begins with a small vineyard in 1924, but the starting signal for its rapid rise to the top of Pomerol is linked to the name of the Thienpont family, which also owns the neighbouring and now hardly less famous Vieux Château Certan. With a small acquisition of just under another hectare of vineyards, Château Le Pin, with its total of two hectares of vines, may be considered the first "garage winery" or "boutique winery" in the region. These vines, however, stand on a gifted terroir, that legendary gravelly clay soil of Pomerol, which rests on a limestone base. The focus here is, of course, on Merlot, which usually makes up about 92 percent of the cuvée. At 30 hectoliters per hectare, yields are in the lowest range even for top wines. Malolactic fermentation takes place in the barriques. Alexandre Thienpont, cousin of the proud owner Jacques Thienpont, watches over the entire process from the grape to the precious bottle. Just 8,000 bottles are produced per vintage, which makes it, together with Château Pétrus, the most expensive Merlot in the world, but at the same time one of the most sought-after Bordeaux, for which lovers pay just about any price.

Château tour du pin, st emilion, 2010.

This property opposite Cheval Blanc on the border with Pomerol continues to impress. Touted by us as one of the outstanding values in 2009, the 2010 will at least match its predecessor and may even eclipse it given time. Under Pierre Lurton's guidance, quality has risen dramatically. Produced from 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, this is reserved and serious St Emilion. Slick black fruit attack with lovely purity. The tannins are super soft and refined with a gravelly tone to them. Refined and stylish.

Château Tour du Pin

Château Tour du Pin

In a region steeped in history and establishment, Tour du Pin is a mere flash in the pan. Its story is best described as short and sweet. The vineyards originally formed part of the great Figeac estate, but in 1879 the Corbière family purchased the land and formed Chateau La Tour Figeac. In 1881, the estate was split down the middle with half the estate renamed La Tour du Pin Figeac.

The estate was later bought by Antoine Moueix and remained in the Moueix family until 2006 when Pierre Lurton of Cheval Blanc saw the potential of the site. In 2008 the name was changed to Chateau Tour du Pin. With the technical know-how of Cheval Blanc behind them, the Chateau started to make huge leaps in quality. We fondly remember tasting the magnificent 2009 at Cheval Blanc and being instantly smitten, this was followed up by the even more impressive 2010 (93RP).

They say that all good things must come to an end, but Chateau Tour du Pin’s demise was somewhat abrupt and ignominious. When the powers that be in St Emilion reclassified the vineyards in 2012, the best portion of Tour du Pin was upgraded to Premier Grand Cru Classé "A" status and incorporated into Cheval Blanc. Tour du Pin has subsequently disappeared. So there were only ever five vintages of Tour du Pin produced under Cheval Blanc ownership and there won’t be any more. As such, it is a rare but delicious beast, and one we recommend hunting down. Our view is echoed by Robert Parker. “Pierre Lurton, the director of Cheval Blanc, has completely resurrected this estate since it was acquired by the owners of Cheval Blanc... Well worth a search of the marketplace as purchasers will get all the savoir faire of the Cheval Blanc wine making team combined with a very good vineyard that has been admirably resurrected”.

Pomerol Wineries Open for Wine Tours and Tasting

Picture of Polina

Pomerol is home to 130 mostly small wineries including the famous Petrus and Chateau Le Pin.

Given the size of the wineries, there is not always a wine tourism operation.  However, there are select few excellent Pomerol wineries that gladly accept visitors.  Consider them when planning your Bordeaux wine tour.

1. Chateau Beauregard

chateau tour le pin

2. Chateau Petit Village

chateau tour le pin

Chateau Petit Village is right across the street from Chateau Beauregard .

The estate was founded in 1785.

The first wine of the estate, Chateau Petit Village is notable as it has the highest proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in Pomerol, where Merlot is the main grape variety.

In 2020, the chateau was purchased by the same families that own Chateau Beauregard.

Besides the traditional guided tour and tasting, the chateau offers you special experiences such as tasting of young wine from a barrel, vertical tasting of Chateau Petit Village, and tasting of old vintages.

If you want to learn more about this Pomerol chateau or include it into your Pomerol wine tour, click on this link .

3. Chateau Gazin

chateau tour le pin

A visit to Chateau Gazin is a real treat.

First, you will be given a very informative personal tour including a generous tasting by one of the  chateau owners.

Second, the wines are one of the best in Pomerol. The chateau is located in the most prestigious part of Pomerol near Petrus.  In 1969, the Bailliencourt family sold 5.5 hectares of vines to Petrus.

Finally, the scenery is just breathtaking.

You will remember the labels of Chateau Gazin by  the Tampliers cross.   Between the 12th century and the French Revolution t he chateau  belonged to the knights of Saint-Jean of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta (the Tampliers).

The Bailliencourt dit Courcol family owns the chateau from 1918, when it was acquired by the great-grandfather of the present owners.

Please note that there is no boutique on the premises, in case you plan to buy some bottles.

See more information and booking details for Chateau Gazin here .

4. Chateau Tailhas

chateau tour le pin

Chateau Tailhas is the first chateau you will see when entering Pomerol from Bordeaux.

Here, you will get to meet Luc, the owner who is very passionate about his wines and has a great sense of humor. Luc belongs to the 3rd generation of the Nebout family at Tailhas. They purchased the estate in 1932.

Today, Château du Tailhas vineyard covers 11 hectares on the southern slopes of the Pomerol plateau planted with Merlot (80%), Cabernet Franc (10%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%).

Visit this family winery if you are looking for genuine authentic experiences in Pomerol.

This is now opening up well. There is still some tannin, but the rich, dark plum fruit is dominant. The palate is full and savoury, and the finish is long. A fine example that should keep well and continue to improve.

A fine, elegant St Emilion, with good weight. Ripe plum/blackberry fruit, with some discreet tannin. Just about ready with a good decant (the hour or so I gave it was probably not enough), but perhaps try again in 2+ years.

Château La Tour du Pin 2009

The origins of Château La Tour du Pin are complicated to explain, although if we look at the name that was used up until 2006 it at least gives us a clue. Château La Tour du Pin Figeac , as it was known, was one of many estates dotted around the very western extreme of the St Emilion appellation, where limestone and sand give way to gravel and clay, to have been cleaved from the original Figeac estate. This once extensive property gave rise not only to the modern-day Château Figeac and Château Cheval Blanc , but to any number of other estates many of which wear their origins on their sleeves, including Château La Tour Figeac and Château Grand Barrail Lamarzelle Figeac .

To add to the complexity Château La Tour du Pin Figeac was itself subdivided, which meant that when I first started learning about Bordeaux there were, confusingly (it doesn’t take much where I am concerned), two Figeac -derived estates that went by exactly the same name. They were distinguished purely by the name of the proprietors, giving us Château La Tour du Pin Figeac (Giraud-Bélivier) and Château La Tour du Pin Figeac (Moueix) . The former estate still exists today, while the latter, which was acquired by Antoine Moueix, that same branch of the family which today still owns Château Taillefer and Château Tauzinat L’Hermitage , disappeared after the 2011 vintage.

The estate had been acquired by LVMH, the owners of Château Cheval Blanc , back in 2006, and they immediately dropped not only the Moueix suffix, but Figeac too, and thus we ha d Château La Tour du Pin . I recall meeting the wine made by the new owners for the first time in the 2007 vintage, during a visit to Château Cheval Blanc ; I thought, for a difficult vintage, it was a promising start. Indeed, the 2008 was certainly a step up in quality, while the 2009 was delicious. With Pierre-Olivier Clouet and his team making the wine, I guess we should not have expected anything less. I was sufficiently convinced to buy some of the 2009 for my own cellar, just one of a number of good-value wines I stocked up on in that vintage.

Château La Tour du Pin 2009

My joy turned to confusion, however, when few years later the estate seemed to disappear. Having expected it to achieve a suitable ranking in the 2012 St Emilion classification , it was nowhere to be seen. “What’s happened to La Tour du Pin?” , I asked myself. Unsurprisingly, that didn’t yield any answers, so I asked Pierre-Olivier Clouet instead.

As it turned out, the team at Château Cheval Blanc weren’t quite as enamoured of the wines of Château La Tour du Pin as I was. In reviewing how they would respond to the 2012 St Emilion classification , they decided to focus on gaining a suitable ranking for their other estate, Château Quinault L’Enclos . They didn’t feel that the wines of Château La Tour du Pin would make the grade (both La Tour du Pin Figeac estates had been demoted in the subsequently annulled 2006 classification ), and so they took a different approach. The estate was split into two, with 1.4 hectares of Merlot planted on attractive gravelly soils at the eastern end of the estate absorbed into the vineyard of Château Cheval Blanc , the first such addition in more than 140 years. The rest, with soils of sand or fine gravel, was either top-grafted or replanted to Sauvignon Blanc and more lately Semillon . So if you have ever wondered where the vines for the recently created white wine of Château Cheval Blanc , Le Petit Cheval Blanc , are located, now you have your answer.

In the meantime I will continue to work my way through my case of 2009 Château La Tour du Pin , content that at least part of what I am drinking would these days be included in the blend of Château Cheval Blanc . Well, you have to get your kicks where you can. In the glass the wine shows a reassuring colour, a vibrant black cherry hue, with a raspberry claret rim. The nose starts off with toasty plum notes, then it focuses down into grilled black cherry, with twists of toasted black bean, black olive and ground coffee. There follows an elegant start to the palate, textured but not overly soft, succulent though, with considerable tannic structure; it feels broad and grippy, the tannins pervading the middle and endpalate. In the finish it feels long and charged with tannic energy, and it has a lovely confidence, with flourishes of blackcurrant, plum, coffee and toasted nut. Overall this is a nicely composed wine, youthful and structured, and certainly still on the way up. I think this will be fine for drinking any time over the next decade. 94/100 (18/2/19)

Le Pin's soil is a mixture of gravel and clay with a little sand and is exceptionally low yielding (between 30 to 35 hl/hc). The grapes are hand-harvested and are fermented in stainless steel before being matured in`200%` new oak barriques for between 14 and 18 months. Dany Rolland , wife of cult-oenologist Michel Rolland , is a consultant here.

Le Pin produces just 600 to 700 cases each year ( Lafite Rothschild produces approximately 29,000 cases of wine a year and and Pétrus about 4,000) and its rarity is one of the driving forces behind its high prices. Le Pin produces super-concentrated, decadent, lush and lavishly oaked wines - they can be drunk young but are best with 7-10 years of bottle ageing.
