Bonjour and welcome to the Cyclingnews live coverage of the 21st and final stage of  the 2023 Tour de France.

After Saturday's stage in the east of France, the riders have travelled to Paris by team bus for today's final stage.

The start of the 115km final stage starts inside the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines velodrome that will host the track events of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The teams are currently signing on and ready to celebrate in Paris.

After a still emotional Thibaut Pinot, KOM winner Giulio Ciccone leads Lidl-Trek on stage. He is covered in polka-dot from head to toe.

We're 20 minutes from the start of stage 21. 

Jonas Vingegaard is on stage with his  Jumbo-Visma teammates.

We will surely soon see him toasting his victory in the early kilometres. 

Tadej Pogacar has also signed on. He is in the white jersey and won stage 20.

After heavy rain in Paris, the sun is coming out as the riders prepare to roll out.

The riders face a 3km neutralised sector. 

We're not expecting attacks from the very start today.

Campenaerts has eased to to wait for the peloton. 

There is an informal order of celebrations and photo opportunities to respect.

There was a relaxed atmosphere at the start, with Pinot ands his teammates enjoying the free goodes from the publicity caravan. 

There was a more personal Tour de France moment for Tadej Pogacar and  his partner Urška Žigart.

This was the moment Jonas Vingegaard entered the velodrome to sign-on.

Jonas Vingegaard congratulated Thibaut Pinot on his attack on stage 20 and his career.

The stage is a final day at the Tour de France for Pinot and for a few other riders, including Peter Sagan. He celebrates winning the green jersey seven times.

The four jersey wearers are now on the front of the peloton.

As you may have seen, the Tour de France Femmes began earlier today. 

We have a full stage report and photo gallery, with news and reaction coming soon from Women's Editor Kirsten Frattini and Lukas Knöfler, who are on the race for Cyclingnews.

 Tour de France Femmes: Lotte Kopecky goes solo to win stage 1

The riders are to east of Paris and will now gradually ride towards the centre of Paris.

Riders from different nations have been posing for photographs on the front of the peloton. The speed stays slow.

Of course it will speed up to 60km/h when the riders reach the famous Champs Elysees.

It's time for Alpecin-Deceuninck to take their bow, with Jasper Philipsen in the  middle of the shot  in the green jersey.   

The riders hit the Champs Elysees with 56km to race. 

They cover 8 full laps of the 6.8km circuit, riding up the Champs Elysees to the Arc du Triomphe and back down to the Louvre. 

The riders are about to pass Versailles but there is only one king of the Tour de France today.

The riders will see the new finish layout on the Champs Elysees. 

The finish line is now 700 metres from the last corner and the Place de la Concorde.

That could change the way the sprint unfolds and the lead outs in the final kilometres. 

In 2022, Jasper Philipsen won ahead of Dylan Groenewegen and Alexander Kristoff;

All three are in contention this year and we'll soon see if anyone can beat Philipsen in the biggest sprint of the Tour de France. 

Jonas Vingegaard and Jumbo-Visma also posed for photographs and celebrated with a glass of champagne.

Jumbo-Visma celebrate on the ride to Paris. Tghe only rider missing was Wout Van Aert, woh left during the third week to be with his wife as she gave birth to their second child.

The riders climb the Côte du Pavé des Gardes, the only categorised climb of the stage. 

Naturally Ciccone takes it, joking with teammate Mads Pedersen.

Here we go, the riders are along the Seine river and enters the city of Paris. 

They can see the Tour Eiffel now.   

The pace and urgency is rising  now. It's almost time to race.

The roads are dry but the skies are cloudy, there is a risk of rain. 

Jumbo-Visma are on the front now, ready to lead onto the Champs Elysees as per tradition. 

They're wearing a special kit today to celebrate overall victory and victory in the team classification. 

Early Vingegaard confirmed that he will also ride the Vuelta a Espana with Primoz Roglic, as Jumbo-Visma go for a first ever Grand Tour grand slam.

The riders have crossed Pont Neuf and now ride 'through' the Louvre museum in central France.

The riders pass the team buses and through the chicane of Place de la Concorde. 

The barriers are narrower this year.  

The rider face eight lap of the 6.8km circuit.

As the riders climb the Champs Elysees there are the first attacks. 

The speed is high and so the riders swoop around the Arc du Triomphe.

Pascal Eenkhoorn is the first to try a real attack. More try their hand too. 

The riders emerge from the tunnel near the Louvre and the attacks are caught.

Nathan Van Hooydonck of Jumbo sits on Pogacar, just as Jumbo-Visma have done all Tour.

Pogacar reaches the Arc du Triomphe with a 10-second lead.

Oops.. Matteo Trentin needs a bike change after losing his saddle.

The sprint teams are having to work hard to chase Pogacar.

He and Van Hooydonck are still clear, the gap is 10 seconds.

More riders are trying to join Pogacar and Van Hooydonck.

Pogacar asks Van Hooydonck to do a turn but he refuses, so Pogacar shakes his head in disappointment.

Behind Alpecin are trying to organise the chase, they fear an organised, numerous attack. 

There now eight riders on the attack. 

Bettiol and Kwiatkowski are in the attack.

The speed is up to 60km/h and so the laps fly by.

Pogacar leads the attackers over the line again. Her is trying to split the group with Bettiol and Skelmose.

They climb again on the cobbles of the Champs Elysees.

But it's quickly Gruppo Compatto once again.

Several riders are struck by punctures and so face a chase to finish in the peloton.

More attacks!

Simon Clarke and Frederik Frison go now. 

On the downhill of the Champs Elysees, Nelson  Oliviera (Movistar) joins them.

The trio lead by 10 seconds and so Pogacar jumps after them. 

Four laps to race and the sprinters' teams seem to be letting the attackers blow off some steam.

So far Alpecin, Jayco have placed one rider on the front.

They can perhaps close down a three-rider attack easier than a bigger move.

Clarke, Frison and Oliveira lead by 10 seconds but Julian Alaphilippe leads the chase.

Jonas Vingegaard is tucked safely in the peloton to avoid any problems and crashes. 

He's 25km from celebrating overall victory.  

Three laps to race!

The trio lead by 20 seconds. Could they do it?

This is nice to see, Dries Devenyns of Soudal makes an attack. He just turned 40 and is riding his last Tour. 

Now Giulio Ciccone starts to work for Lidl-Trek and their sprinters Mads Pedersen.

Jai Hindley has a chain problem and needs a bike change.

The Australian is away but will have to chase to defend his seventh on GC. 

Clarke, Frison and Oliveira still lead by 15 seconds. 

So  Intermarche help with the chase.

Hindley has dived through the team cars and is back into the peloton.

Two laps to go! 

Clarke, Frison and Oliveira still lead by 20 seconds. 

Stefan Kung also needs a bike change. 

As the riders climb up the Champs Elysees, the peloton is losing in on the attack. 

It's starting to rain in Paris.

The trio are caught by a new attack. 

Even Julian Alaphilippe tries to go across and pass them.

Judges have decided to take the stage times with one lap to go. There will be no time bonuses or points awarded at the finish.

More attacks. 

Alpecin marks the move.

Ding, ding, ding. 

One lap to go! 

Omar Fraile launches an attack. 

Campenaerts is there too. 

Israel take over in the peloton.

Sagan moves up near  the front.

Riders are trying to smash open the peloton but it's a huge task.

At the Arc de Triomphe the pelton is all together. 

It's sprint time!

Bettiol goes again! 

They're racing at over 60km/h!

Vingegaard and his teammates have eased up. 

He has won the Tour de France. 

It's all about the sprint win now. 

It's sprint time.

Jayco and Alpecin lead the peloton but Pogacar is in the mix.

Here we go! 

Photo finish! 

Four riders were spread across the road! 

Philipsen could only come late and so he may have lost it. 

It looks like Jordi Meeus of Bora got it!

Meanwhile Jonas Vingegaard crosses the line with his teammates to win the 2023 Tour de France.

Jordi Meeus cannot believe he has won the sprint.

He was well placed and came off Pedersen's wheel in sight of the line. He rode it perfectly, with a bike throw, while Philipsen was forced to come late and from behind.

Meeus waves a hand as he rides to the podium area. 

That's a great way for Bora-Hansgrohe to finish the Tour.

Vingegaard is also ready to be crowned winner. He lifts his bike in the air after kissing his partner and celebrating with his teammates.

The replay shows how Pogacar leads the sprint onto the Champs Elysees. 

Mathieu van der Poel leads Philipsen as Kristoff gets baulked near the barriers. 

Groenewegen went early and hit the front, forcing Philipsen to go along the barriers. 

Pedersen went down the middle but Meeus was on his wheel and came late with a perfect bike throw to the line.

Meeus was overjoyed to win.  

"I knew in the previous sprints that there was more possible than the result I showed so far. Today everything went perfect and I'm super happy to finish it off," he said.

"I felt quite good all day. The beginning was easy obviously but from the moment we went full gas my legs felt incredibly good. Then Marco Haller did a perfect job with positioning and he was also there." 

"I had the wheel of Pedersen and I could come out of the slipstream and catch it on the line," Meeus added, realising a dream had come true.

"For sure - it's my first Tour and it was a super nice experience so far. To take the win today is just an indescribable feeling."

It was close.

Jonas Vingegaard will soon climb on the podium and be crowned as the 2023 Tour winner. 

"It's a feeling of being proud and happy - we're winning it for the second time now. It's really amazing," he said. 

"Today with all the Danish people here was really amazing. I have to say thanks not only to my team and family but to the whole of Denmark. They support me and I'm really grateful for this.

"It's been a long journey but it also went by so fast. We race every day and one day takes the other. It's been a super hard race and a super good fight between me and Tadej. I enjoyed it all the way."

The racing is over but now it's time for the podium ceremony on the Champs Elysees.

The stage is set for the podium ceremony.

Victor Campenaerts is the first on the podium as the Super Combative of the 2023 Tour de France. 

He was a late selection for the Tour but deserved his award. 

Next up Jumbo-Visma are celebrated for winning the best team prize.

They beat UAE Team Emirates by 7:13, with Bahrain Victorious third at 22:01.

Jordi Meeus is also celebrated as the stage winner.

Next up is Tadej Pogacar. He wins the best young riders white jersey for a fourth year. He is also second overall at 7:29 down on Vingegaard. 

It's Ciccone's moment next. He wins the polka-dot mountains jersey after a strong ride in the final week.

He is the first Italian to win the special jersey since Claudio Chiappucci in 1992. He scored 106 points, beating Felix Gall, who scored 92, and Vingegaard on 89 points.  

The podium ceremony is moving fast and Jasper Philipsen is next as he takes the green points jersey. He is the 21st Belgian rider to win it.

Philipsen won four stages and was second twice, scoring a total of 377 points, far more than Mads Pedersen on 258.

Jonas Vingegaard is next up as he is crowned as the overall Tour winner in the yellow jersey.

This is second consecutive victory and he has confirmed he will also ride the Vuelta and return to target the Tour de France in 2024.

Meanwhile at the team bus area, the other teams are celebrating  reaching Paris. 

Next is the final overall  podium, with Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogacar and Adam Yates. 

UAE Team Emirates take second and third but Vingegaard wins again.

The Danish national anthem rings out over Paris.

Vingegaard sportingly thanks his rivals for a great race.

Pogacar was his huge rival this year and surely will be again in the future.

Who Won the 2023 Tour de France?

A stage-by-stage guide to the leader of the General Classification of the men’s Tour.

Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) won the yellow jersey as the overall winner of the 2023 Tour de France. The 26-year-old won the Tour for the second straight season, becoming the 21st rider in history to win the race multiple times. Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), another two-time TdF winner, finished second for the second straight season, 7 minutes, 29 seconds behind Vingegaard. Pogačar’s UAE Team Emirates teammate Adam Yates was third overall, 10 minutes, 56 seconds behind the winner, to round out the podium of the Tour de France.

Here’s a look at how the General Classification played out in every stage of the 2023 Tour de France.

2023 Tour de France Champion - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) officially won the 2023 Tour de France after safely finishing Stage 21 on Sunday, July 23. For the second straight year, Vingegaard was the top General Classification rider at the Tour. This time, he beat second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) by 7:29, the largest margin of victory in the GC since Vincenzo Nibali won by 7:37 in 2014.

Vingegaard first claimed the yellow jersey after Stage 6 and never relinquished it. He led by 25 seconds over Pogačar at that point, but Pogačar slowly but surely cut into that advantage. That is, until Stage 16, when Vingegaard rode a brilliant time trial to drive his lead over Pogačar to 1:48. The next day on Stage 17, Vingegaard further solidified his lead after Pogačar cracked in the high mountains, driving Vingegaard’s lead well past seven minutes. He held that lead through the finish in Paris on Sunday. Pogačar, meanwhile, won the white jersey as the best young rider (25 years or younger) in the Tour de France. He wins white for a record-breaking fourth time.

Pogačar wasn’t the only UAE Team Emirates rider on the podium. Adam Yates, who held the yellow jersey from Stage 2 through Stage 5, finished third overall, 10:56 behind the leader. His twin brother, Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla), finished fourth overall, 12:23 back. Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) was fifth, 13:17 back.

Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninick) won the green jersey as the winner of the points classification. Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) won the polka jersey, winning the King of the Mountains classification. Vingegaard’s Jumbo-Visma team won the team classification, with the best time of their team’s top three riders.

Stage 20 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) will wear the yellow jersey on the Champs-Élysées on Sunday as the leader of the 2023 Tour de France. Vingegaard is set to win his second straight Tour de France—barring diaster or as he said, “anything stupid—on the 21st and final stage.

Vingegaard finished second on Saturday’s Stage 20 with the same time as his top rival Tadej Pogačar. Pogačar claimed the stage win, but will have to settle for second to Vingegaard for a second straight year. This year, Vingegaard holds a 7 minute, 35 second advantage on Pogačar.

Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) remains in third overall, 10:56 back of the yellow jersey to get the final podium spot. His twin brother Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla) moved up a spot to fourth on Saturday. He’s 12:23 back of the lead. Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) rounds out the top five, losing a spot on Stage 20 after crashing early in the stage. He’s 12:57 behind the leader.

Stage 19 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) leads the 2023 Tour de France through 19 stages. Stage 19 was packed with a lot of exciting drama up front, but the General Classification contenders stayed well behind the action well over 13 minutes behind the stage winner.

Vingegaard continues to lead Tadej Pogačar (Team UAE Emirates) by 7:35. Adam Yates (also from UAE Team Emirates) is in third place overall, 10:45 back of the lead.

Stage 18 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) remains in the lead of the 2023 Tour de France after Stage 18. Thursday’s stage was a day for the sprinters (even though the breakaway managed to barely survive), so there were no changes as far as the GC situation. Stage 18 comes a day after Vingegaard solidified his spot atop the yellow jersey standings.

Vingegaard leads second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) by 7:35. Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) is in third, 10:45 behind the leader, and Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) is in fourth, 12:01 behind. With three stages to go, Vingegaard surely can taste his second straight Tour victory.

Stage 17 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) leads the 2023 Tour de France, furthering his advantage on Stage 17. Vingegaard now leads second place Tadej Pogačar by 7 minutes, 37 seconds after leading by just 10 seconds two stages prior. Pogačar cracked in a big way on Wednesday, losing major time, while Vingegaard excelled once again in the mountains to gain massive amounts of time on his closest rival and pre-Tour co-favorite.

Vingegaard made major gains during the Stage 16 individual time trial, and then on Wednesday he delivered a virtual punishing blow to Pogačar’s yellow jersey hopes. It seemed during the Tour’s second week that Pogačar had a slight upperhand on Vingegaard. But it wasn’t to be as the defending champion through down his time trial and then big mountain ride on consecutive days. That changed the Tour from one of the closest of all-time to the largest leading margin since 2014.

There are four stages still remaining, but barring something completely unexpected, Vingegaard will win the Tour de France once again by the end of the day on Sunday.

Stage 16 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) leads the General Classification of the 2023 Tour de France after Stage 16. Vingegaard extended his hold on the yellow jersey on Tuesday on an individual time trial. The maillot jaune crushed the ITT, winning the stage by 1:38 and extending his GC lead to 1:48 over second place Tadej Pogačar, his top rival.

Vingegaard was magnificent on the time trial, putting time into Pogačar from the start all the way to the finish. It’s the first time this Tour that one of the co-favorites put a major amount of time into the other, as Vingegaard has firmly asserted himself as the one to beat over the remaining five stages.

Elsewhere in the GC battle for the podium, Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) moved up from fourth to third place in the standings. Yates supplanted Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) after the time trial. Yates, Pogačar’s teammate, is 8:52 behind the yellow jersey Vingegaard. Rodriguez is now in fourth place, 8:57 behind Vingegaard. Just five seconds separates Yates and Rodriguez, so it should be an exciting matchup between those two for the third and final podium spot in the GC.

Stage 15 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) remains in the yellow jersey after Stage 15 of the 2023 Tour de France. Vingegaard holds a 10-second lead over Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) after another tough mountain stage. Ultimately, the gap between the two GC favorites remained unchanged, as the two riders finished the stage together. The Tour heads into a Monday rest day before the final week begins, and very little has separated Vingegaard and Pogačar.

Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) was able to extend his hold on the third place podium spot after Stage 15. Rodriguez finished the stage ahead of Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe), who he started the day just one second ahead of. Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) moved up ahead of Hindley for fourth place overall.

Stage 14 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) still leads the 2023 Tour de France after a wild Stage 14. Vingegaard now holds a 10-second advantage on Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates). Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) moves up to third place in the GC after winning Stage 14. He’s now 4:43 behind the yellow jersey. Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) moves to fourth place in the GC, 4:44 back of the lead. Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) is in fifth place, 5:20 behind.

Stage 14 only saw a change of one single second among the two leaders, Vingegaard and Pogačar, but that didn’t mean there weren’t plenty of fireworks. Jumbo-Visma pushed the pace to make it hard on Pogačar, but Pogačar looked to be relatively unfazed by it all. The stage proved that the battle for the yellow jersey will go down to the bitter end between Vingegaard and Pogačar.

Stage 13 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) held onto the yellow jersey as the leader of the 2023 Tour de France. But the gap between the defending champion and Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) has narrowed after the Slovenian, winner of the Tour in 2020 and 2021, attacked and then gapped the Dane about 400 meters from the top of the “Beyond Category” Col du Grand Colombier at the end of Stage 14.

Pogačar crossed the line 4 seconds ahead of Vingegaard and in doing so finished third on the stage to take a 4-second time bonus, which cut Vingegaard’s overall advantage to just 9 seconds. With two days in the Alps before Monday’s rest day, expect more fireworks as these two continue their intense fight to win the 2023 Tour de France.

A little less than a minute before the reignition of the Tour’s GC battle, Poland’s Michal Kwiatkowski (INEOS Grenadiers) won the stage after spending all day in the breakaway and attacking what was left of it on the lower slopes of the Grand Colombier. A super-domestique with an impressive resume of his own, the 33-year-old proved too strong for UAE Team Emirates to catch, holding-off Belgium’s Maxim Van Gils (Lotto-Soudal) and then Pogačar to take the second Tour de France stage victory of his career.

Stage 12 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) remained in the yellow jersey after a somewhat stressful Stage 12 of the Tour de France. Despite the stress, the GC picture remained mostly unchanged. Vingegaard remains 17 seconds ahead of second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates). Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) is third overall in the GC, 2:40 back.

Thibaut Pinot made a jump into the top ten of the GC, going from 15th to tenth after gaining time on the other GC contenders in the breakaway on Thursday.

Stage 11 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) continues to lead the 2023 Tour de France after 11 stages. Stage 11 saw no change to the General Classification on a sprint stage, despite a relatively tricky road into the finish.

Vingegaard remains 17 seconds ahead of Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) for the lead in the yellow jersey competition. Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) is in third, holding down the final podium spot, 2:40 behind Vingegaard. Tuesday’s flat stage is the last true sprinter’s stage until perhaps Stage 19—or even the final Stage 21 in Paris—so we can expect an eventful next week or so as far as the GC is concerned.

Stage 10 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) held onto the yellow leader’s jersey after Stage 10 of the 2023 Tour de France, leading Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) by 17 seconds. Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) remains in third place, 2:40 behind Vingegaard. These standings should stay the same after Stage 11, which will likely favor the sprinters.

Stage 10 didn’t see any major GC moves, but that didn’t mean it was an easy day in the saddle for the yellow jersey hopefuls.The peloton held the breakaway in check throughout the day, never giving them too much time. Ultimately, there weren’t any moves on the stage after the rest day from Vingegaard or Pogačar.

Stage 9 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) held onto his lead in the 2023 Tour de France, but lost time to Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) at the end of Sunday’s Stage 9. The stage finished atop the Hors Categorie (“Beyond Category”) Puy de Dôme, an extinct volcano rising above the Massif Central that the Tour hasn’t been climbed by the Tour since 1988.Canada’s Mike Woods (Israel-PremierTech) won the stage.

The former world class distance runner paced himself perfectly from the base of the climb, catching multiple riders left from the day’s big breakaway on the way to his first Tour de France stage victory. France’s Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies) finished second, and Slovenia’s Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious) finished third. But the battle to win the Tour’s General Classification took place over eight minutes later, as Vingegaard and Pogačar continued their duel on the climb’s upper slopes.

Jumbo-Visma did a terrific job of whittling down to the yellow jersey group, but it was Pogačar who took advantage pulling away from Vingegaard about 1,400meters from the summit finish. Vingegaard only lost 8 seconds to the Slovenian, but heading into the first rest day, he now leads the Tour by just 17 seconds. The race to win the 2023 Tour de France is far from over.

There was once again no change in the overall, as Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) continues to lead the 2023 Tour de France. The defending champion has a 25-second advantage on Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), as the peloton prepares to head into a big mountain stage on Sunday.

Simon Yates (Jayco–AlUla) was the lone GC contender to lose time on Stage 8, crashing with about 6K to go in the stage, outside of the 3K safe zone. Yates went from being 3:14 down from the leader Vingegaard to 4:01 after Saturday.

Stage 7 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) enjoyed his first day in the yellow leader’s jersey during Stage 7 at the 2023 Tour de France. It was a relatively easy day—despite some intense heat—for the GC contenders in the peloton on Friday’s stage designed for the sprinters.

Vingegaard continues to hold a 25-second GC lead over Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates). The two riders will likely see a major GC clash again on Sunday’s Stage 9 mountain stage. Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) is 1:34 behind the yellow jersey Vingegaard in third overall.

Stage 6 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) took over the lead of the 2023 Tour de France after an eventful Stage 6 that saw the GC contenders battle it out for the stage win and crucial seconds. Vingegaard will wear the yellow jersey on Friday’s Stage 7. He leads second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) by 25 seconds in the overall standings after Pogačar won Stage 6. Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe), who wore the yellow jersey on the day, lost time on Thursday and is now in third place in the GC, 1:34 back of the leader.

After Vingegaard dealt a major blow to Pogačar on Stage 5, Pogačar roared back to capture the stage win and prove that the GC is not over yet. Despite Vingegaard moving into the yellow jersey, Stage 6 was much more defined by Pogačar gaining time on Vingegaard than the changing of the guard in the leader’s jersey. It seemed after Stage 5 that the defending champion Vingegaard was clearly the strongest rider in the peloton once again, but Pogačar, a two-time Tour champion in his own right, showed us that it’s a long way to Paris and it could be a fierce battle all the way to the end.

Stage 5 Leader - Jai Hindley

Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) took over the lead of the 2023 Tour de France after a brilliant win on Stage 5. Hindley leads the General Classification by 47 seconds (thanks in part to 18 seconds worth of bonuses picked up on Stage 5) over second place overall Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma). Giulio Ciccone (Lidl–Trek) is 1:03 back in third overall and Emanuel Buchmann (Bora–Hansgrohe) is in fourth overall, 1:11 back.

The yellow jersey holder for the first five stages, Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) lost the lead on Wednesday and is now in fifth overall, 1:34 back of the lead. Tadej Pogačar, the co-prerace favorite along with Vingegaard, lost time on Stage 5 and is now in sixth place overall, 1:40 behind the leader Hindley. Vingegaard is 53 seconds ahead of Pogačar.

Stage 5 saw some major GC shakeups. Hindley, the 2022 winner of the Giro d’Italia, sits in yellow with a solid 47-second advantage over Vingegaard. With a grand tour win already under his belt, Hindley has a chance to stay in yellow for a while. Of course, a lot of that depends on the race tactics of Vingegaard and Pogačar, who may likely spar again on a mountainous Stage 6.

There was no change in the General Classification standings of the Tour de France after Stage 4. Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) will stay in the yellow jersey another day, holding onto a six second advantage over teammate Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and his twin brother Simon Yates (Jayco–AlUla).

Stage 5 has a good chance to brings some GC fireworks. Pogačar—in second place overall—has an 11-second advantage over Tour de France co-favorite Jonas Vingegaard, who is in sixth place overall. That could change—one way or the other–on Wednesday.

Stage 3 Leader - Adam Yates

Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) continues to lead the 2023 Tour de France. After the first two stages of the Tour de France brought a ton of fireworks and battles between the General Classification contenders, Stage 3 was the first (mostly) flat day for the sprinters.

Yates remains in the lead of the GC still six seconds up over second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and third place Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla). There were no significant losses among the contenders on Stage 3.

Stage 2 Leader - Adam Yates

Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) maintained his lead of the 2023 Tour de France after Stage 2. Adam Yates finished 21st on the stage, but finished on the same time as the other top finishers of the day. He now holds the yellow jersey by six seconds over second place Tadej Pogačar, Yates’ UAE Team Emirates teammate. Adam Yates’ twin brother Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla) is third overall, also six seconds behind.

Pogačar, meanwhile, earned 12 bonus seconds during Stage 2 to widen his lead over GC co-favorite Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), Vingegaard earned five bonus seconds on the day, and currently sits in sixth place in the yellow jersey competition, 17 seconds behind Yates and 11 seconds back of Pogačar. Stage 2 winner Victory Lafay (Cofidis) is now fourth overall in the GC.

Another thrilling battle at the 2023 Tour de France is in sight as Tadej Pogacer will try to take back the Tour de France crown that he lost to Jonas Vingegaard last year. Here is all you need to about this year’s race which begins on 1 July in Bilbao, Spain.

The Tour de France 2023 has all the makings of another road cycling thriller.

Will the world’s most prestigious race be the third act in the epic battle between defending champion Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark and 2021 champion Tadej Pogacar ?

Soon we will have all the answers with the 110 th edition of the French Grand Tour starting on Saturday (1 July) in Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque Country, Spain.

Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) is hoping to be crowned champion again, after he won last year’s race as just the second Dane in history ahead of Slovenia’s two-time Tour de France winner, Tadej Pogacar

It is the 110 th edition of the French Grand Tour that will feature Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Richard Carapaz , silver medallist Wout van Aert and bronze medallist Pogacar.

La Grande Boucle will cover 3,404 km over the 21 stages, with the final stage taking place at the Champs-Élysées in Paris on 23 July. There are eight flat stages, four hilly stages, one time trial and eight mountain stages. Four of these have summit finishes, including the stage to the mythical Puy de Dôme.

176 riders will be on the start line at the Guggenheim Museum, one of Bilbao’s major tourist attractions, with eight riders for each of the 22 teams.

In 2022, we witnessed a breathtaking duel between Vingegaard and Pogacar , and they are coming into this year’s race as the two big favourites.

The 26-year-old Dane has participated in four stage races this season, having won three of them in dominant fashion - O Gran Camiño, Itzulia Basque Country, and most recently the Critérium du Dauphiné.

Pogacar and Vingegaard last faced each other at the Paris-Nice in March, where the 24-year-old Slovenian claimed victory ahead of David Gaudu and Vingegaard .

UAE Tean Emirates captain Pogacar has claimed no less than 14 victories this season including Paris-Nice, Tour of Flanders, Amstel Gold Race and La Flèche Wallonne, before he crashed and broke his wrist at the Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

The two-time Il Lombardia winner made his comeback last week, claiming both the Slovenian national time trial and road race championship.

2022 Giro d’Italia winner Jai Hindley is going to be the leader on a strong BORA - Hansgrohe team. At the Critérium du Dauphiné, 27-year-old Hindley finished fourth behind Adam Yates of the UAE Team Emirates and his compatriot Ben O'Connor of AG2R Citroën Team.

With his win at last year’s Giro, the Australian has shown that he has the endurance needed to compete in a three-week Grand Tour.

22-year-old Mattias Skjelmose (Denmark) stunned the world of cycling by winning the Tour de Suisse earlier this month ahead of the likes of Remco Evenepoel and Juan Ayuso .

He continued his impressive run and was crowned Danish road race champion on Sunday (25 June), after a spectacular solo effort in the final kilometres.

The Trek-Segafredo rider has participated in one Grand Tour previously as he rode the Giro d’Italia last year finishing just 40 th . This year’s Tour de France will be a test of his stamina.

And dont count out Enric Mas. The 28-year-old Spaniard has finished second in the general classification at the Vuelta a España three times and is hoping to make the podium at the Tour.

The Movistar rider came in top six overall in three stage races this season.

Other key riders at the Tour de France 2023

Green jersey.

Last year's points competition winner Wout van Aert has already announced that the green jersey will not be a target for him as he aims to win stages and prepare for the UCI Cycling World Championships that takes place just two weeks after the finish in Paris.

That leaves Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Deceuninck as the favourite to take the crown. The Belgian clinched two stages last season - including the most prestigious sprint finish on the Champs-Élysées - and he has already six race wins this season. His versatile teammate Mathieu van der Poel seems to be in the shape of his life, and if the Paris-Roubaix winner gets the freedom to chase the green jersey, watch out for the Dutchman.

The biggest threat might come from Soudal-Quick Step that always target stage wins with their sprinter. Fabio Jakobsen will be their trusted sprinter, like last year. The Dutchman is supported by a strong sprint cast with the most experienced lead-out man in the peloton, Michael Mørkøv, to set him up. 

Sprinter’s teams like Team Jayco Alula with Dylan Groenewegen and Lotto Dstny with Caleb Ewan will also chase stage wins and are contenders for the green jersey.

Denmark’s Mads Pedersen and Biniam Girmay of Eritrea are not only great sprinters but also good climbers. That ability can secure points for the green jersey classification on the more hilly stages. Pedersen took his first Tour de France stage win in last year’s edition and claimed the green jersey in the Vuelta a España, but like van Aert he has announced his focus is to arrive in top shape at the UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow.

Polka dot jersey

In the last three editions of the Tour de France, the winner of the king of the mountains classification has also been the overall winner of the Tour de France. Therefore, Pogacar and Vingegaard are the top contenders this year.

For the French riders it will be a special achievement to be on the podium in Paris wearing the polka dot jersey. Thibaut Pinot , who was king of the mountains classification at the Giro d’Italia in May is keen on challenging the two top guns as is 2019 polka dot jersey winner Romain Bardet .

Tour de France 2023 route and important stages

The 2023 Tour de France begins with a hilly stage containing some 3,400 metres of climbing. Contenders for the overall win will have to be ready from the start on the hills around Bilbao. The stage suits classics specialist like Mathieu van der Poel , Wout van Aert and Julian Alaphilippe who all want to be the first rider to wear the yellow jersey at this year’s Tour de France.

After another hilly stage in the Basque Country to San Sebastian on stage two, the peloton will cross the French border and resume the race with flat stages on day three and four. 

Stage five will take the peloton on the first mountain stage in the Pyrenees which includes Col du Soudet and Col de Marie Blanque. The following day, the riders will tackle the mythical mountain Col du Tourmalet before finishing the stage on the category 1 climb Cauterets-Cambasque. Week one concludes with an eagerly anticipated summit finish to the volcano Puy de Dôme that returns to the Tour after a 35-year absence.

On stage 13 in week two, the teams face a gruelling finish to Col du Grand Colombier in the Jura mountains. The two following days will also test the riders’ climbing skills with stage 15 featuring a summit finish to Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc in the Alps to end week two.

The final week kicks off with stage 16, the only individual time trial in the race. It is just 22 kilometres long but contains a fair amount of climbing, especially in the second part of the route. After the time trial, the queen stage of the Tour de France with more than 5000 metres of climbing is sure to generate plenty of drama. Colo de la Loze, the highest point of the race at 2304m, is the biggest obstacle on this stage being 28 kilometres long, with an average gradient of six percent.

Two flatter stages follow ahead of a short but mountainous penultimate stage in the Vosges on stage 20. It will be the last chance for the general classification contenders to gain time before the celebrations in Paris.

TOUR DE FRANCE 2023: LOOKING BACK TO LOOK TO THE FUTURE

The Tour de France 2023 will hold its Grand Départ in the Basque Country, with a first stage in Bilbao on 1st July, and will finish in Paris on 23rd July, on completion of a 3,404-km route that will tackle the difficult slopes of the country’s five mountain ranges. The battle for the Yellow Jersey will witness a decisive and emotional episode on the Puy de Dôme, where a stage finish will be held 35 years after the victory of Denmark’s Johnny Weltz. The return to this legendary climb will be accompanied by the rise in importance of sites that will mark the Tours of the future, such as the Grand Colombier or the Col de la Loze. The sole time-trial on the Tour de France in 2023 will take place over 22 kilometres between Passy and the Combloux ski resort in Haute-Savoie. The sprinters will also have the opportunity to express themselves on finishes in Bordeaux, Limoges, Moulins, before the grand finale on the Champs-Elysées.

Bilbao on 1st July next year is where the Tour de France will celebrate its 120th anniversary. The Grand Départ in the Basque Country precisely offers the kind of scenery and roads that will pay tribute to the pioneers of 1903, because their successors, from the beginning of the race, will be plunged into a Pyrenean sequence with many twists in store, on both the Spanish and French sides of the border. The punchers will tuck into a menu of their favourite flavours on the roads of the Clasica San Sebastian (on stage 2), whilst the sprinters will have a free rein in Bayonne (on stage 3) as well as on the Nogaro circuit (on stage 4) and the climbers will already have to get to grips with the slopes on the stages finishing in Laruns (on stage 5) and on the Cambasque plateau near Cauterets (on stage 6). The rare starts of the Tour that take place in southern climes generally give rise to a dense programme, but this time the total of 30 climbs rated category 2 and above is chiefly due to the mountainous grand slam to be tackled this year, because each of France’s five mountain ranges will be visited by the pack.  

In this collection of more or less demanding climbs, the one attracting most attention is likely to be the ascension of Puy de Dôme (on stage 9) whose roads will once again be open to the riders on the Tour (but not to their fans), 35 years after the last ascent to overlook Clermont-Ferrand. This reunion with the past, which brings back memories of the duel between Anquetil and Poulidor in 1964 or recalls the victory by Fausto Coppi in 1952 on the edition of the first high-altitude finishes, especially promises an initial and extremely tense battle between the pretenders for the title. The last four kilometres of tarmac before the finishing line, with an average gradient of almost 12%, could be the fuse that awakens the dormant volcano.  

The leading lights of the pack will be following in mythical footsteps on the Puy de Dôme, but will also be testing each other’s mettle on peaks that are set to play host to the fiercest contests of the future. For example, an emerging legend will have pride of place on Bastille Day, with the battle taking place on the Grand Colombier (on stage 13), where the finishing line will be set up for the second time in the race’s history. Following the summit of the Jura, the big shots will fight for supremacy on the Col de la Loze, just before soaring down to the high-altitude airstrip in Courchevel (on stage 17), to conclude a sequence in the Alps where the strongest riders will simply become untouchable. The Col de Joux Plane pass and its subsequent descent before Morzine (on stage 14), the climb up to Le Bettex the following day (on stage 15), as well as the Côte de Domancy slope which is on the programme for the sole time-trial of this edition (on stage 16), will in effect make and break the hierarchy between the handful of riders concerned by the Yellow Jersey.The temperament observed among the expected favourites on all the roads of the cycling world suggests that they will not miss any opportunity to go head-to-head. The same will again be true on the penultimate day of the race, where the relief of the stage through the Vosges Mountains to the ski resort of Le Markstein will include 3,500 metres of climbing over a distance of only 133 km, taking in the Col de la Grosse Pierre and the ascensions of the Petit Ballon and the Platzerwasel (on stage 20). The leader designated in Alsace will be honoured the following day on the Champs-Elysées, where the race will close with a sprint festival that will have also visited Bordeaux, Limoges, Moulins and Poligny, allowing prestigious victories to be enjoyed in all the classifications!
