It’s the proximity to the sea, the nature, beaches and the idyllic town that attracts both tourists and campers year after year. It’s something magical about this town that makes you want to go back and see more.

Hold up! Have you thought about the importance of travel insurance?

Remember this:  anything can happen. Travel is fun, but your health is more important; thus, I always, always, always recommend getting insured during the duration of your trip. I have benefitted from having one multiple times, and it has been covered for thousands of euros!

The latest one is not necessarily “health” related – it was during the peak of the unspeakable terrible C that consumed the world. I was living in Vietnam when I received an email from SafetyWing (my travel insurance) that if I want they’ll fly be back home to Finland as the world goes through a global emergency alert. I flew back fully covered, and dealing with  SafetyWing  was a breeze despite the roar of people in contact with them trying to get back home.

I can’t highly recommend them enough. Otherwise, I rarely get sick; hence I don’t always need to head to a hospital, but knowing that I have travel insurance makes me feel safe at the very least.

Read my post about  why you should get travel insurance  for more information. Otherwise, you can get a free quote from  SafetyWing  – they’re the best, in my opinion.

What are my favorite travel must-haves?

As a frequent traveler, I’ve learned a lot throughout my years of travel, and there are five items that I always carry with me regardless of where I go and how long the trip is. Here are my five travel must-haves!

  • Warm packable jacket  – I always carry a light jacket, even when heading to warm countries. There hasn’t been a time I never used it, especially in airports and planes.
  • Transparent toiletry bag  – I often bring a carry-on if I’m only traveling within Europe for a few days. Life is so much easier to go through security checks with a transparent toiletry bag.
  • Kindle Paperwhite  – I love a good read and always take my Kindle everywhere. It keeps me entertained during long flights and waiting times.
  • Powerbank  – I don’t know how I could travel without one! Having a power bank saved me a ton since I carry a lot of electronic devices with me.
  • Travel Adapter  – I never leave my luggage without a travel adapter! I carry one with me all the time. It is just one of that travel-must haves that doesn’t hurt to have in your bag at all times.

Known as the gateway to Österlen, Ystad has a charming cobble main street full of brightly coloured buildings. The town is famous for the Greyfriars Abbey, one of the most well preserved medieval monasteries in Sweden.

Ystad is a small town on the south coast of Sweden with a population of approximately 30,000. The settlement of Ystad was first mentioned in documents in 1244 as “Viistatha”. Sankta Maria kyrka was already constructed by this time. The Franciscan monastery of Gråbrödraklostret was founded in 1267. In 1285, the name “Ystath” was first recorded. In the 14th century, Ystad traded with the Hanseatic League. After World War II, ferry services began operating to Świnoujście in Poland and the Danish island of Bornholm. The oldest parts of the building date back to the 14th century. Over the centuries it was damaged, rebuilt, and renovated until it got its current neoclassical appearance. In 1921, Ystad’s town hall was transfered to another building. Today Gamla Rådhuset acts as council meeting rooms. The spire of Sankta Maria Kyrka is visible directly behind Gamla Rådhuset.

Things to Do in Ystad

55km (34 miles) E of Malmö, 46km (29 miles) W of Simrishamn

Time has passed Ystad by, and that's why we like it. Its Gamla Stan contains an astonishing 300 well-preserved half-timbered antique houses along cobbled streets. They're scattered about town, but we found the greatest concentration of them on Stora Östergatan.

Most of the houses date from the latter 1700s, although one we discovered, Ånglahuset, on Stora Norregatan, was from around 1630. You can also launch yourself into the past by exploring Stortorget , the impressive main square of Ystad, which was a big smuggling center during the Napoleonic wars. You'll want to check out another charming square, Tvättorget, Ystad's smallest, as well. Surrounded by half-timbered houses, it's hard to find, reached only by walking up a narrow lane called Bäckahästgränd.

At one time, Ystad was much more important than the provincial town you see today. Back in the 17th century, it was "Sweden's window to the world." Amazingly, the first automobile in Sweden was driven on the old streets of Ystad. The town also opened Sweden's first bank, and its first building that could be called a hotel. There is still some activity here, with ferries leaving for the Danish island of Bornholm -- even to Poland.

If you're a fan, like us, of the best-selling Inspector Karl Wallander crime thrillers -- all written by Henning Mankell -- you probably already know that Ystad is also a setting for his suspense tales. If you don't have time to wade through all of Mankell's books, opt for the fourth, The Man Who Smiled. It's the best and most evocative. Devotees of the series can tour the sights associated with the inspector with a volunteer fire brigade every Tuesday and Thursday from July to mid-August. Fans are taken around town on an antique fire engine. The tourist office will have details.

Devotees of the silent screen might know of Ystad as the birthplace of Valentino's "beautiful blond Viking" Anna Q. Nilsson, who was born here in 1890 and whose fame at one time was greater than that of Greta Garbo, a fellow Swede. Some of Nilsson's greatest films were In the Heart of a Fool (1921); Ponjola (1923), in which she played a boy; and Midnight Lovers, finished in 1925, the year of a horseback-riding accident that ended her career. Today she is remembered mainly for appearing in a cameo role as one of the "waxworks" in the 1950 Gloria Swanson classic Sunset Boulevard.

MATCH PREVIEW | Hereford Travel to Southport

23rd August 2024 by Hereford FC - Club News , Preview

The Bulls are on the road again this weekend as they travel up to Merseyside to take on Southport with both teams hoping to return to winning ways.

Hereford will be looking to bounce back from a frustrating 1-1 draw on Tuesday night at home to Peterborough Sports.

Paul Caddis’ side took the lead in the 23rd minute through Montel Gibson but failed to grab the second before Dion Sembie-Ferris equalised for the Turbines just past the hour mark.

“Yeah not happy with the game at all. I thought first half we controlled the game but second half they got that one opportunity they were waiting for and they scored it, then from there we just lost control, we got nervous in possession,” said the Hereford manager.

Southport are also coming off the back of a disappointing result after they lost 2-0 away to Spennymoor Town on Tuesday night.

The loss stunted what had been a positive start to the season for Jim Bentley’s side with the first two games of the season heralding wins against Alfreton and Needham Market.

Last season was a tough one for the Port with a 17th-placed finish, just six points above the relegation zone.

The Bulls will be wishing for a repeat of last season’s game between these two sides at Haig Avenue where Caddis’ side ran out 2-1 winners with the goals coming from Kieran Phillips and an own goal.

Jason Cowley continues to be absent from the squad after picking up an injury in the pre-season friendly against Halesowen Town.

Aaron Skinner, who is recovering from a hamstring tear, was on the bench again against Peterborough Sports but did not feature as he continues to build his match sharpness.

Cosmos Matwasa returned to action on Tuesday night after missing out on the opening game against South Shields through injury and not featuring against Chorley, coming on for the final 20 minutes.

Matt Preston was taken off in the 68th minute against Peterborough Sports with a tight groin according to Caddis.

Goal scorer Gibson was also subbed off due to fatigue from a lack of pre-season action.

Caddis also added that a few other players had received “bumps and bruises” and would be monitored in training on Thursday ahead of Saturday.

3-0 (H) South Shields 10/08/24 (Gibson x1, Williams x1 and Ceesay x1) 1-1 (A) Chorley 17/08/24 (Rose x1) 1-1 (H) Peterborough Sports 20/08/24 (Gibson x1)

3-1 (H) Alfreton Town 10/08/24 (Daniel Philliskirk x2 and Tom Moore x1) 1-2 (A) Needham Market 17/08/24 (Danny Lloyd-McGoldrick x1, Jamie Proctor x1) 2-0 (A) Spennymoor Town 20/08/24

Ones to Watch

Alex Babos (HEREFORD):

The Welshman is a fan favourite at Edgar Street after scoring 10 goals and picking up four assists in the league last season. Babos has also started this campaign well with an assist in both home games so far. The Derby County academy graduate will be hoping to score his first of the season this Saturday.

Marcus Carver (SOUTHPORT):

Hereford fans will know all about Carver after he scored in both fixtures against the Bulls last season. The striker was on loan at Southport from Scunthorpe last campaign but signed permanently in the summer after his 12 league goals helped the Port stay up. Carver will be hoping to repeat his form against Hereford last season to get his first goal of the season.

Head-2-Head:

Echo Law lodges class action against Jetstar over Covid-19 travel credits

Jetstar customers impacted by Covid-19 restrictions might be able to claim back their lost dollars after a class action was launched against the airline.

Jetstar is facing a class action lodged on behalf of hundreds of thousands of customers whose flights were cancelled during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The claim, which was lodged in Federal Court by Echo Law, alleges Jetstar failed to refund customers’ payments for cancelled flights, despite being legally obliged to do so.

A class action against Jetstar could help Aussie reclaim lost money. Picture: NewsWire / Luis Enrique Ascui

Echo Law partner Andrew Paull said the airline carrier had put profits before customers by failing to provide refunds.

“Jetstar promotes itself as a values-driven, low fare airline committed to helping ‘more people fly, more often’, yet it’s a highly profitable part of the Qantas Group, and when Covid caused widespread flight cancellations it put those profits ahead of its customers’ interests,” Mr Paull said.

“Jetstar customers were pushed into holding hundreds of millions of dollars in restricted travel credits, even though this wasn’t what those customers had agreed to as part of the airline’s terms and conditions.

“The right thing for Jetstar to do when it cancelled all those flights was to return its customers’ money without delay.”

The claim, which was served on Jetstar on Wednesday, also alleges the customers were legally entitled to automatically recover money paid for their tickets because the Covid travel restrictions automatically terminated those “contracts”.

Echo Law alleges Jetstar’s failure to issue refunds was a breach of contract and attained unlawful financial benefit by offering travel credits instead of refunds.

A Jetstar spokeswoman said the airline would review the claim filed on Wednesday.

“Last year we removed expiry dates for Covid vouchers so they can be used indefinitely,” she said.

“These vouchers are also multi use, meaning they can be used across multiple bookings and for multiple people.”

While the credits were never redeemable for cash, the airline previously announced it had removed expiry dates from all Jetstar Airways Covid vouchers from August 2023.

However, Mr Paull said Jetstar engaged in misleading or deceptive conduct in contravention of Australian Consumer Law, by misleading customers as to their rights in the event of widespread Covid cancellations.

“Many Jetstar customers ended up paying the airline more than their original booking to use their credits on new fares, as they were led to believe they had little choice but to do that or else lose the value of the flights they paid for,” Mr Paull said.

Echo Law also separately commenced another class action against Qantas in 2023 over its Covid credits program, which is ongoing.

Mr Paull said both class actions seek refunds and compensation for customers.

“Like Qantas, we allege Jetstar breached the law by failing to be transparent and by failing to refund its customers,” he said.

“It held onto ordinary Australian’s money and expected customers to just be happy with credits, which we allege it was not entitled to do. It now needs to be held accountable and refund that money with interest.

“While customers sat at home not able to enjoy the benefits of flying, Jetstar enjoyed the significant financial benefits of holding hundreds of millions of dollars in customer payments including interest and reduced borrowing costs.

“It is unfair, and we allege unlawful, that Jetstar profited from holding onto its customers’ money for flights it had cancelled.”
