Cultural Discoveries

On your cycling holiday in Laos, you’ll have the chance to connect with locals and immerse yourself in the many facets of Lao culture. Cycle through villages around Muang Xai where the locals still use traditional methods of farming to feed their families. Explore the many nooks and crannies of the Pak Ou Caves that are covered with statues of the Buddha, then join the monks for their morning Alms in Luang Prabang. Check out village industries such as sa paper making, Lao Lao rice wine distilling, and traditional pottery at Ock Pop Tock for a better sense of life in Laos.

Taste amazing Lao cuisine in many traditional meals featured on your tour. The people of Laos value freshness in the ingredients they use, and combine a well-balanced mix of vegetables and spices in the dishes they are passionate about sharing with foreigners. Near Luang Prabang you are most likely to find fish as the star of many meals, whereas in the mountains, root vegetables and poultry are more common. Sample Lao noodles, steamed fish, minced meat salad, and plenty of sticky rice on your active adventure in Laos.

Our extremely knowledgeable local experts are along for the ride to ensure that you have a bike tour full of cultural experiences, great cycling, and connections with your surroundings. Grasshopper Tour Guides are often cited as being a highlight of our tours, which you’ll discover as you pedal through Laos together. As always, our guides are there to secure your comfort and safety throughout your cycling journey.

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT…

What a fantastic experience! I understand this trip is relatively new but was executed flawlessly by a professional guide who is able to connect on a personal level. The route was well thought out and ordered, the regions were diverse and special places to visit, and I have pretty much only good things to say about the trip at the end of it. Highly recommended.

Fantastic itinerary, lots packed in. Great scenery, cycling, historic sights, food and hotels. Very dedicated local team. I particularly enjoyed the optional mountain hike and hot air balloon ride. Team went out of their way to assist with my extension to Vietnam after the trip had ended. Some slightly long driving legs between the cycling on very poor roads.

A wholesome tour that connects the two most visited cities, Luang Prabang and Vientiene in Laos through an array of mountain landscapes. Northern Laos is home to mountains covered with lush tropical forests, river valleys, and hill-tribe cultures. The rolling terrain combined with gradual climbs from low-lying riverside valleys is just perfect – a cyclist’s delight. Here we get to ride along the three beautiful rivers viz. Mekong, Nam Ou, and Nam Pak. When you want to take a break, switch from your bike’s saddle to a seat on a slow boat. This is an excellent way to see and experience life along the rivers of Laos. The rivers are the lifelines here and you can soak up the beautiful vistas of this intriguing country, at a leisurely pace and meet its people too, only on the slow boats.

Brief Itinerary

Detailed itinerary.

Itinerary Image

Day 1 : Luang Prabang

Our guide meets you post-lunch at 13:00hrs at your hotel.

Begin the afternoon tour by cycling around the old quarter of Luang Prabang, starting at Heuan Chan Heritage House and after to Luang Prabang’s National Museum, formerly the Royal Palace that displays a collection of personal artifacts of the former Laotian Royal Family. Visit nearby Wat Mai – the five-tiered roof epitomizes the graceful Luang Prabang architectural style. Continue cycling along the Mekong River and stop at the hillside temple of Wat That Luang. Take a short walk and visit the ancient stupa called That Dam (the Black Stupa) before biking to Wat Visoun, the oldest living temple in Luang Prabang. Wat Visoun dates back to 1513 and contains a collection of antique wooden Buddha images. Continue along the Nam Khan River to Wat Xieng Thong – often considered to be Luang Prabang’s most elegant. The temple is characterized by tiered roofs sweeping low to the ground and the impressive “tree of life” mosaic. Before sunset, cycle back to your hotel on the town’s main street, stopping at Wat Sop and Wat Sen along the way.

Itinerary Image

Day 2 : Luang Prabang

Our main destination for the day is the hidden waterfall, Kung Si. Tucked away between thick foliage, the famous waterfall feels like a secret. The aquamarine waters are tempting, so do carry your swimwear along.

On our way to the waterfalls, we stop at the Great Project (called the Laos Buffalo Dairy), a project designed to educate the Rural communities on Animal Husbandry and animal health care. They rent the Cattle from the villagers to enable a secure income for the community and use the milk to create Cheese and Spectacular Ice Cream. Today's lunch is served picnic style with an opportunity to get an unforgettable ‘Buffalo Selfie’.

Dinner is at a Local NGO that trains marginalized youth for careers in the Hospitality industry. It is also one of the most exciting menus in town, with a balance between traditional and modern flavors.

Day2 Luang prabang.png

Day 3 : Boat to Pak Beng

We transfer to the pier and board a huge traditional Mekong riverboat for the upstream cruise to Pak Beng, departure at 08.00 hrs. This portion of the Mekong is very remote, which sometimes allows glimpses of wildlife in the extensive forests. There are occasional stops at local hill tribe villages to meet people and observe life on the riverside. Lunch will be served on a boat and you may have the opportunity to stop and visit local villages. Enjoy the lovely scenery along both sides of the Mekong cruising to today’s destination.

Itinerary Image

Day 4 : Oudomxay

Day4 Pak Beng-Oudomxay.png

Day 5 : Muang Khua

Day5 Oudomxay-Muang Khua.png

Day 6 : Boat to Nong Khiaw

We ditch the cycles for an amazing boat ride in the Nam Pak River to Nong Khiaw. This is one of the most stunning journeys by the river in this region. The edge of the river is dotted with small villages and this is a great way of getting acquainted with local life. There are also limestone formations that make for great photographic experiences. The jaw-dropping landscape keeps you hooked to this for a long.

Itinerary Image

Day 7 : Nong Khiaw

Today you can take it as a rest day and enjoy the tranquil setting of Nong Khiaw at leisure.

Those who are up for a hiking activity can start the day with a boat ride on the Nam Ou to a small village where you can learn about the way of life along this river. Then trek through small streams and rice paddies to reach the base of the 100 waterfalls. For the next few hours, you will see only water and jungle and hear the sound of clear waterfall cascades. The pools around you are very inviting for a refreshing splash.

Our guide leads us through the cascades and prepares a local-style lunch on the falls in the middle of it all. Then take a small villagers’ trail from the top of the falls back down into the valley; along the way, you’ll take in views of the landscapes of the Nam Ou Valley.

Hiking back to the village, we’ll have more time to observe the daily life here before heading back by a small boat to Nong Khiaw.

Itinerary Image

Day 8 : Luang Prabang

Hop on a bike and ride along the undulating countryside skirting the Nam Pak River to Luang Prabang. Cycle out of the Nong Khiaw towards Pakmong. From here we transfer 40km and then cycle to visit Pak Ou Buddha Caves before a van rides back to the city. These caves have been home to many thousands of Buddha images that were placed here by local people since the 16th century when King Setthathirat found the caves and declared them a holy spot. Today many people still pay respect to this tradition.

Day8 Nong Khiaw-Luang Prabang.png

Day 9 : Kasi

A transfer of about 2hrs brings us to Kiu Kacham, situated at an altitude of 1,350m. From here, the ride is largely undulating until Phou Khoun, followed by a long descent to the valley of Kasi. The magical landscape is dominated by some of the highest limestone mountains and Hmong villages.

The accommodation/guest house in Kasi is basic (though it's clean with a comfy bed, air conditioning and taken care by good hosts) and is the best available option in the vicinity. We include overnight stay in Kasi as it's well placed in our cycling route and offers good cycling with good scenery on the day we arrive and leave Kasi.

Day9 Luang Prabang-Kasi.png

Day 10 : Vang Vieng

Today enjoy gentle rolling hills to Vang Vieng past spectacular karst ranges, green fields, and lumbering water buffalos. Vang Vieng has a magical setting on the Nam Song river. It’s surrounded by dramatic karst cliffs, hundreds of caves. bucolic villages and blue lagoons.

Day10 Kasi-Vang Vieng.png

Day 11 : Vang Vieng

Today we cycle the dirt road to the peaceful and secluded Blue lagoon 3 for a refreshing dip, the rest of the day is free to enjoy the vibe of the town

Itinerary Image

Day 12 : Phou Khao Khouay

Departing from the town at 7:30 am, we transfer early to Boat actress, the lake leading to Thalat. In landlocked Laos, today's ride sparks excitement about coastal life as we make our way to the 'sea of Laos,' a 250 sq km artificial Lake Nam Ngum. A blissful 2-hour boat journey concludes in Thalat. Our cycling adventure then begins as we head southeast toward the national park.

As we mount our bikes, the landscape unfolds before us, revealing lush paddy fields that stretch out to the horizon. With each pedal stroke, we are treated to stunning vistas of the Phou Khao Khouay mountain range, creating a visual symphony of nature's beauty.

Following a short 20km transfer to Ban Khune for lunch, an afternoon ride of 50km brings us to a luxurious resort hidden within the national park.

dramatic-laos-day12.png

Day 13 : Vientiane

Enjoy an extended breakfast at the resort and take some time to explore the surroundings. Departure for the capital is scheduled for around 10:30 am, with a transfer back to route 10 and then riding south towards the capital.

Vientiane, nestled on the banks of the mighty Mekong River, beckons us as we approach it in the early afternoon, around 2 pm. With ample time on our hands before our farewell dinner, we seize the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the city's rich cultural tapestry.

Our sightseeing adventure commences with an exploration of iconic landmarks, starting with the Patuxay monument—a remarkable architectural homage to the Arc de Triomphe. If time allows, we'll also have the opportunity to visit one of the majestic temples, Pha That Luang, bathed in the gentle afternoon light.

In the evening, we delve into the local rhythm of life by strolling along the bustling walking street that lines the riverside. The vibrant atmosphere envelopes us as we take in the sights and sounds of the city. To cap off our unforgettable journey, we indulge in a delectable local-style BBQ, savoring the flavors of Laos as we come together for our final meal, creating cherished memories to carry with us as we bid adieu to this remarkable adventure.

The dry season runs from late October until May; June to October is characterized by heavy rainfall. The southwest monsoon generally arrives around May/July. Until July, rain comes mostly in the form of short downpours for an hour or so, clearing the way for clear skies. After July, rain reaches peak levels in August and September.

Though the weather can be sometimes quite unpleasant from June to September, there are benefits to this season. Nature comes to life, dry brown grasslands and forests become lush and green, the farmers welcome the season with full productivity, and lakes and rivers as well as waterfalls fill up and become stronger than ever.

Our cycling tours in Northern Laos majorly run from September to mid-April with Oct to Feb being the best months having low humidity and plenty of sunshine. Mar to May is characterized by high humidity and some smokey skies due to slash-and-burn agriculture.

Tourist visas on arrival are available at certain ports of entry, and generally permit a stay of 30 days. At certain ports of entry, you can use an eVisa. See laoevisa.gov.la for more information. We recommend applying for e-visa in advance as that expedites the immigration process on arrival at Laos airport.

Our day excursion will end up with a visit to Muang Kham where we immerse in the hot springs and retreat ourselves.

Day 10: Cycling Tour | Muang Kham – Xieng Khouang (53 km)

This morning spin over to the Plain of Jars , a world-famous archaeological site that has stumped curious scientists and historians for decades. Scattered across the plains lie giant stone vessels – some as high as three meters – that are thought to be thousands of years old. Some international scientists reckon that the vessels are linked to burial practices of ancient communities that once lived in such the area. However, none of them knows for sure who created the vessels, what their exact purpose was or how old they are. You’re in the middle of a mystery! Then cycle to Muang Khoun , the one-time capital of Xieng Khoang province that was destroyed by bombs during the Vietnam War. Although being damaged by the bombs, traces of its colonial grandeur are still visible.

Day 11: Cycling Tour | Xieng Khouang – Phou Khoun (50 km)

Today, we just get into a shorter ride from Phonsavan to Muang Soui with manifold Buddhist sites consisting of historical temples and caves. Then, we keep riding to the Phou Khoun for a night in a local guesthouse ahead.

Day 12: Cycling Tour | Phou Khoun – Luang Prabang (90 km)

Before cycling to Kioukacham , we have some time to discover the local market. In the afternoon, we begin our final descent to Luang Prabang . En route, observe a marvelous scenery as we zip past Khmu and Hmong villages . We then reach Luang Prabang in the late afternoon. Enjoy a celebratory dinner in Luang Prabang.

You’re welcome to bring your own saddle if you’re slightly nervous about getting a bit sore, or haven’t had the chance to get a lot of saddle time before the ride. Another good option is to bring along a gel seat (cushion).  The bikes are fitted with standard pedals. Again, you’re welcome to bring clip ins should you want them. All bikes are fitted with a water cage.

There’s a feast of exciting activities to sink your teeth into. Spend your day exploring  around the many markets, museums and temples. The day is yours to potter, caffeinate and watch the world go by. The  group will meet up for dinner at 6pm at the hotel, where we’ll head over to the banks of the Mekong for a drink, followed by a Lao style BBQ.

Inc. Meals: Dinner Cycling: NA Transit: Airport transfer Hotel:  Azalea Park View Hotel  (or equivalent)

Buddha Park, COPE and Friends

After breakfast, we’ll get fitted for the bikes and start the day with a gentle 22km ride to Wat Xieng Khouane Luang, otherwise known as the Buddha Statue Park. The van will follow and take us back to town to visit COPE Visitors Centre, where we will get an introduction to the effect the Second Indo-china war  had on locals and what COPE is doing to enhance mobility of land mine victims.  Mini Makphet restaurant is another local NGO by Friends International where we will have lunch and learn about the vocational training programs and the social work carried out by this amazing NGO. After lunch, we’ll transit 80km out of Vientiane to spend the evening in Nam Pien Yorla Pa, part of the Phou Khao Khouay National Bio-Diversity Conservation Area.

Lao Conservation Trust for Wildlife

Waking up surrounded by a tree top canopy, the Lao Conservation Trust for Wildlife is on our doorstop and our first stop after breakfast. LCTW works with authorities and individuals to rescue, rehabilitate and release as many animals as they can from the illegal wildlife trade. Cycling on from LCTW, we’ll find a local restaurant for some sustenance, then tackle the remaining 28km to Nam Ngum Lake, where we will catch a private boat across the lake, making our way to Vang Vieng for the late afternoon.

The overall distance, should you cycle the whole way, is just over 400km over the 8 cycling days. The biggest riding day is about 80km, but most of it is quite flat. We allow plenty of time for riding. Our average moving pace is only about 15km (over the day), whilst the total time and pace is 10km per hour (think 80km from 8am and arriving about 4pm, after breaks and lunch). The cycling is about travel, not about racing. We don’t count kilometers or watch the speedo too much. We encourage you to stop and take photos, grab a coffee along the way when we want and take in as much of the local culture as you can.

You need to be healthy more than fit for this ride. The ride is open to beginners, although it won’t be without it’s challenges. There is a support van available at all times. Exploring Wild

Laos Bicycle Touring: Route Notes and Travel Tips

Laos Buddhist temple

Quiet roads, friendly people, varied landscapes, a relaxed but convenient tourism industry, tasty food…  It’s no wonder Laos was my favorite country out of the four I traversed on a recent solo bike trip through Southeast Asia .

If you’re considering a bicycle tour in Laos, especially an independent one (Laos is definitely the kind of place you can navigate on your own), read on for an in-depth rundown of everything I learned during 34 days of bicycle touring in Laos.

This route shows where I spent each night during my entire trip through Southeast Asia, including Laos.

laos cycling tour

Here’s the route I took. I spent 34 days cycling through Laos, including some nice blocks of consecutive rest days.

  • Crossed from Vietnam at Dien Bien Phu / Tay Trang border crossing
  • West on highway 2E to Muang Khua
  • Slow boat on Nam Ou river to Muang Ngoi and Nong Khiaw
  • Brief side trip on highway 1C toward Sam Nuea, backtracked on bus in order to reach Luang Prabang in time for the Festival of Lights. This section was difficult and the roads were pretty empty.
  • Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang on highway 13, with nice stop in Luang Prabang for the Festival of Lights
  • Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng and Vientiane on highway 13 (very scenic but big hill)
  • Vientiane to Vieng Kham on highway 13 and mix of small roads along the Mekong where shown on Maps.me
  • Vieng Kham to Thakhek on the “the loop”: highways 8, 1E and 12. Included out and back to Thong Lor Cave, recommended.
  • Thakhek to Savannakhet on small roads along Mekong (I recommend this route as an alternative to highway 13)
  • Savannakhet to Pakse on mix of highway 13 and small roads along Mekong (shown on Maps.me but not always Google Maps)
  • Pakse to Champasak with detour to Wat Phu. Then south to Si Phan Don (4000 Islands) on the WEST side of the Mekong on small and friendly dirt roads.
  • Island hopping (with help from a few rickety ferries) across Don Khong, Don Som, Don Det and Don Khon.
  • Boat to Nakasong, highway 13 south to border with Cambodia (watch out on the boats here, my brake lever was damaged when the boatman loaded my bike in a bad position).

I highly recommend the small roads along the Mekong in the southern part of Laos. They are flat and relatively populated, which makes them feel more accessible and less committing than the dirt roads in the mountains of the north. I felt safe on them because of all the riverside settlements, and knew that I could be back on highway 13 within less than a day if needed. Highway 13 is a bit monotonous and busy though, so I was glad to avoid it as much as possible.

If you need to research a border crossing to or from Laos, here’s a helpful map showing all the Laos border crossings . Note that some borders aren’t open if you have an e-visa to Vietnam.

Important Update : As of January 2020, many land borders are no longer issuing visas on arrival for Laos .

View from bicycle on small ferry in southern Laos

I enjoyed the entire month I spent in Laos, and it was my favorite country in Southeast Asia. Here are just a few of the highlights.

This popular backpacker destination is known for being a bit inauthentic, and it’s true, the entire village is filled with backpacker accommodation and restaurants. However, after a few weeks in the mountains of northern Vietnam I admit to thoroughly enjoying the ease of a couple days spent here. Maybe because it was low season, the vibe was still relaxed and the village didn’t feel overrun.

The setting is also simply gorgeous. There’s a fun hike up a steep jungle-covered hill to a lovely viewpoint.

Laos village by river in mountains

Luang Prabang

I had the good fortune to be in Luang Prabang during the annual Festival of Lights , and to befriend a few backpackers for company during the festivities. Seeing the lovely temples peacefully lit at night and watching the festive dragon boat parade were some of the best memories of the entire trip.

Beautifully lit temple during festival of lights in Luang Prabang

Thakhek Loop and Thong Lor Cave

A bit touristy but the loop is pleasant to ride with varied scenery. I enjoyed the out and back along quiet road to Thong Lor Cave, and the boat trip through the cave was more interesting than expected.

laos cycling tour

Savannakhet

Off the tourist trail and easy to navigate, this town was a pleasant place to relax and recharge. Among the low-key attractions in Savannakhet are the French colonial architecture and a number of picturesque temples. I’ve heard the Dinosaur Museum is worth a visit, but I was feeling lazy and didn’t go.

Tourism In Laos

Children run on small dirt road in Laos village

Tourism in Laos is developing rapidly, and I was surprised comfortable tourism infrastructure in so many towns. This may be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your preferences.

I did not appreciate Laos’ tourists enough until I later reached the cities of Cambodia and the beaches of Thailand. There I encountered, for lack of a better term, a sleaze factor (sketchy looking western men, serious drug addicts, sex tourism, etc) and also a mass tourism vibe (huge buses and organized tour groups) that I had not noticed in Laos.

Most tourists I met in Laos, especially in the north and central area, were young backpackers eager for adventure tourism. Yes, some of them wanted to party, but most still wanted to wake up in time for their kayak excursion or village trek the next morning. The infamous debauchery of major backpacker hot spots has been cleaned up; tubing in Vang Vieng is still a relaxing party but nowhere near the dangerous infamy of earlier days.

In southern Laos I noticed more small groups of older visitors on organized tours, again preferable (in my opinion) to the more developed mass tourism and expat scenes in parts of Cambodia and Thailand.

Because much of the tourism in Laos revolves around outdoor activities and scenic places, many of the popular things to do in Laos are of interest to bike travelers and regular travelers alike. As a bicycle traveler I found it pleasantly easy to mix with other types of travelers in Laos, including a few nice rest days spent hanging out with backpackers in Luang Prabang and Nong Khiaw.

Mountains in Central Laos

Laos has some really varied terrain. The mountains in the north rival those of northern Vietnam , while the flats of the Mekong River valley in central and southern Laos are perfect for long days of consistent spinning. If you head east from the Mekong in the southern half of the country, you’ll find hills and plateaus. Whatever terrain you’re looking for, you can find it in Laos.

Accommodation

Bicycle inside Laos guesthouse room

Accommodation in Laos is generally cheap, easy to find, and a good value. Most towns have a guesthouse or two at least, and along the main highways there are plenty of guesthouses at well-spaced intervals. In tourist towns you can often find bungalows, hotels, and hostel dorm beds all for reasonable rates. I usually paid somewhere between $7-$9 USD (equivalent in Lao kip) for a single fan room with en-suite bathroom that often included hot water.

You might have to end your day a few hours earlier or later than you’d prefer, but you can generally arrange to be at a guesthouse before dark if that’s your goal. I used Maps.me for identifying guesthouses and found it to be pretty accurate in Laos, especially on well traveled routes in the central and southern regions. In the mountains of the north I had to be a bit more careful about planning my stops, but once on the highways of the south it was pretty easy to ride until I got tired and then find a good stopping place.

If you can’t find a place to stay, ask the locals by making the universal gesture for “sleep” – put both hands palms-together, tilt your head to one side and rest your cheek on the back of one of your hands. Be prepared for vague pointing in various directions.  If you ask enough people you’ll eventually find something.

Unlike northern Vietnam , many guesthouses in Laos are single story with outside doors, making it very easy to bring a bicycle inside the room with you. Wherever that wasn’t the case I had no problem locking it up inside a downstairs lobby or garage.

Bargaining happens in Laos but not as intensely as in Vietnam, and I found that most guesthouse owners started with a pretty fair rate. You can negotiate down a little bit, but if the owner seems unwilling to negotiate further it’s likely because they quoted a fair rate to begin with.

Wild camping isn’t common in Laos, though I’m sure it’s possible if you know what you’re doing. Unexploded ordinance is a deterrent to scrambling around in the bushes looking for hidden campsites, and population density is reasonably high in many places. I would only recommend it if you plan on spending significant amounts of time on back roads.

I used my tent only one night, when I intentionally pushed past the last known guesthouse figuring I would find a place to camp in a village. This turned out to be harder than expected and I was turned away by many people before finally finding a lovely family that understood my plight and helped me out. Don’t underestimate the difficulty of communicating your needs to people who don’t speak a word of English.

I’ve heard that some cyclists ask to camp at temples and the monks are usually welcoming. I didn’t try this because I didn’t want to impose, but some people report success and leave a small donation to thank the monks.

Road Quality

Machinery clearing a landslide on Laos highway

Road quality in Laos is quite varied. Some new roads, like the one from the Dien Bien Phu border crossing, are nearly flawless (as of 2018). Others, like highway 1C toward Sam Nuea, are rough single lane country highways with frequent unpaved sections. The main highway 13 in central and southern Laos is currently paved but the surface is not the smoothest, making for a sometimes frustrating ride.

If it’s your thing, you can find plenty of bumpy but charming dirt roads all throughout the country. These can be intimidatingly remote and steep in the mountains of the north, but I followed some along the flat, populated banks of the Mekong further south and had a lovely experience.

Unpaved or work-in-progress roads with traffic are unpleasantly dusty in the dry season. In the wet season the dirt roads may turn to mud and make for seriously slow going.

Dirt road with puddles in Laos

Laos is definitely my favorite SE Asian country when it comes to traffic and drivers. Though I spent the most time in Laos, I had none of the close calls and minor accidents that I experienced in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand.

Traffic is often light, even on the main highways, though large trucks are always worth keeping an eye on. In the remote or mountainous areas, including the back way to Phonsavan on highways 1C and 7, the roads can feel downright lonely.

Lao drivers often seemed to know when I was approaching a tight spot and would do their best to not make the situation worse. They would yield when needed and pass respectfully.

Still, it’s a good idea to check out these Southeast Asia cycling safety tips just in case.

Food and Drink

laos cycling tour

In most parts of Laos you’ll have no problem finding snacks, cold drinks, and three meals a day. There’s no need to horde meal rations except maybe a packet of emergency instant noodles and some peanuts or biscuits in case you end up at a guesthouse with no restaurant nearby.

There are a few areas where the road passes through a protected wilderness area. Take note of these as that usually means there are fewer villages and less traffic, and therefore fewer opportunities to buy food.

The quality and price varies widely, but noodle soup, fried rice or fried noodles are often what you’ll get out in the countryside. In towns with a tourist presence (which is many these days) you can usually find an English menu with a few more options, including one of my simple favorites, omelette with sticky rice.

In the popular destinations you’ll find all kinds of food, including some surprisingly good Lao Indian options, though this kind of food costs a couple dollars more than the usual $2ish per meal. In backpacker hangouts like Vang Vieng and Muang Ngoi you’ll find more banana pancakes and fruit shakes than you know what to do with.

Backpacker food menu in Vang Vieng

In general I found the bargaining culture in Laos to be more relaxed than in Vietnam. Vendors usually started with a fair price. Food is legitimately a bit more expensive in Laos than in Vietnam.

In Laos I continued my strategy from Vietnam of buying breakfast the evening before from the small shops that seem to be everywhere. Often it involved soy milk, yogurt, cookies, pastries, and instant coffee.

One of my favorite things about central and southern Laos (not so much in the mountains of the north) was the ease of finding iced drinks along the main roads. For amazing iced coffee, look for the little stands with paper bags hanging from the roof and rows of condensed milk cans stacked up. These serve heavy bags of ice with sweet and strong coffee poured over the ice, good for a much-needed energy boost on a hot day. Pro tip: keep the ice after you finish the coffee, and you’ll be able to sip cold ice water for hours.

Bicycle handlebar bag holding iced coffee

For less money you can sometimes find stands with a blender and containers of powder. They mix up the powder with condensed milk and blend it with ice for a sweet and cool treat.

Beerlao is delicious and ubiquitous, usually cold, and in my opinion one of the better beers of Southeast Asia , perfect after a long and sweaty day of cycling.

Pro tip: both instant coffee and instant noodles can be made with cold water.  For the coffee, pour the powder into a small water bottle and shake until dissolved.  For noodles, just let sit for about ten minutes until soft.

Bicycle parking at restaurant in Laos

Most people advise against drinking the tap water in Laos so you’ll want to buy or ideally purify your water .

Chilled bottled water and other drinks are easy to find at shops along main roads.  I carried a 1.5 liter bottle in an oversize bottle cage and a smaller standard squeeze bottle, and this was almost always enough until I could refill.  Sometimes guesthouses or restaurants will have free purified drinking water available from a dispenser.

Unless you plan on carrying more water than you need (and you’ll need a lot on hot days), I recommend carrying some chlorine dioxide drops (I like Aquamira ) as a backup so you can safely drink any water you find from taps, natural sources or village wells.

Note: I brushed my teeth with tap water all throughout SE Asia, being careful not to swallow any, and was mostly fine.  Who knows if that contributed to the occasional digestive issues I experienced, but they were nothing a couple of Imodium couldn’t fix.

Gas Stations

Gas petrol station in Laos

Gas stations in Laos make great stops. They’re nearly everywhere, and often have clean toilets and a shop where you can buy snacks and drinks. They also make reasonable places to shelter from the rain if caught in a sudden downpour.

I used many gas station toilets in Laos, but usually tried to buy my snacks from the families selling out of smaller shops in order to support them financially, as the gas stations seem to make good money already.

I found Laos to be a very friendly country with a comfortable vibe for visitors. As a general rule, the further you are from the tourist trail the more smiles, waves and “sabaidee’s” will come your way. In most places the kids are delightful, friendly but polite, and always eager to say hello. Even within the most touristy destinations there seems to be a relaxed, if mostly transactional, vibe between locals and tourists.

Very rarely did any of the greetings turn into invitations for further interaction, which could be due to a substantial language barrier, reserved culture, my introversion, or all three. Don’t plan to rely on local hospitality for food or lodging. But you can absolutely rely on friendly and genuine greetings to power you through the end of a long day in the saddle.

Communication

Most people outside the tourism industry don’t speak English, and Lao is not an easy language for westerners to learn. Still, most tourists learn and use the key phrases like “sabaidee” (hello) and “korp chai” (thank you). If you can do better than this, the locals will be very impressed.

Despite the language barrier, basic transactions are managed easily enough through gestures and counting on fingers. Many shopkeepers know a few English numbers.

It was rare to meet a Lao person who spoke enough English for a real conversation, but when I did it was a special treat.

Truck and boy on bicycle on small road in Laos mountains

I cycled in Laos during October, the beginning of the dry season that lasts until about April. The weather was usually hot and sunny, with occasional torrential downpours lasting less than an hour, easy to wait out. Definitely plan on wearing lots of sunscreen and covering up when the sun gets to be too intense.

You can certainly still cycle in the wet season from May to October, but prepare to get wet and avoid the dirt roads which turn to mud.

I used Maps.me for navigation, elevation profiles, and help finding guesthouses and shops. It worked great! I even trusted it with navigating small roads along the Mekong that didn’t appear on Google Maps, and it never steered me wrong.

If you really want to explore the sights and side trips, Hobo Maps are supposed to be excellent.

I took a quick look at a GT Rider map in a Luang Prabang bike shop, but didn’t feel it provided very much new information for my relatively well-traveled route. Perhaps those who plan to explore more dirt backroads would find it useful.

Internet and Phone

Wifi is fairly common at many guesthouses and some restaurants in Laos, so I actually made do without a local sim card. This meant that I couldn’t make local phone calls, which worked fine for my on-the-fly strategy of not arranging anything ahead. I downloaded maps in Maps.me and did any necessary online research when I found wifi.

That said, it’s cheap and easy to get a sim card in Laos , and many travelers do.

Bicycle Care

Chongchareon Bicycle Shop in Vientiane

My bike had no major issues in Laos, but like elsewhere in Southeast Asia I’ve read the ubiquitous motorbike repair shops can help you out in a pinch.

In Vientiane I was able to buy a 10 speed chain (as a backup) from a bike shop on Dongpalan Road. I couldn’t find a sign but apparently it’s called Chongchareon Bicycle Shop, phone number 337 +85 621 285 187. The guy spoke some English and was very helpful.

Unlike in northern Vietnam, I had basically zero issues with dogs in Laos. Like the people, they seemed friendly and relaxed.

Safety and the Solo Female Factor

Solo female cyclist in Laos

As far as personal safety goes, Laos has to be near the top of the list, at least among the developing countries of the world. It’s about as hassle free for a solo female as it gets. Most men simply smiled politely and said “sabaidee.” I received zero unwanted male attention during my time in Laos.

I do want to note two things. First, I felt slightly on edge on the remote roads of the north. I’d heard/read a few stories of bandits attacking tourists in those areas and developed an irrational fear, even though I know events like that are very rare. Even the main “highways” in that area can be quite sparsely traveled, and I felt more at ease on the flatter and slightly busier (it’s all relative) roads of the central and southern regions.

Second, I had one slightly odd incident on an otherwise friendly and idyllic dirt road along the Mekong in southern Laos. A teenage school boy on a motorbike said something I couldn’t understand when passing me, accompanied by a very unfriendly look. Then he stopped a few times up ahead, “hiding” in very obvious places and peering back at me around bushes, apparently waiting for me to come closer. I stopped a safe distance behind him and pretended to have a snack each time. The area was not remote and I didn’t feel in danger, but I also didn’t want to cycle into whatever he was planning as he hid in the bushes. Eventually a passing man said something to him and he sped off, and that was the end of that. But it was a good reminder to always pay attention and follow my gut when noticing something a little off.

Not that any of this  should matter in my ideal world, but I’m a white woman in my mid-thirties and I cycled solo, usually wearing knee-length baggy mountain bike shorts and a t-shirt .

As always, it never hurts to consider a basic framework for keeping yourself as safe as possible in unfamiliar environments.

Monk in red robe on ruined walkway of Wat Phu, Laos

Laos will always hold a special place in my heart as the country where I became a cyclist. After struggling through the mountains of northern Vietnam at the beginning of my trip, I finally found my strength and confidence in central and southern Laos. I made friends, I laid down miles (or should I say kilometers) like never before, I explored back roads, and I felt comfortable. What more could a traveler on a bicycle ask for? I highly recommend bicycle touring in Laos and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Hi, thanks for an informative article about SE Asia. Regarding accommodation in Laos, have u also tried homestays if u couldn’t fimd a guesthouse? I read that they are round 10USD incl dinner, maybe some simple breakfast also. This makes better value than guesthouses for as u mentioned price range 7 – 9 USD. Do u have any info regarding that? Thanks! (I’m gonna cross the Cambodian / Lao border in couple of days 🚴‍♂️

I think you can find official homestays in places that are used to tourists, especially in more rural areas. The value may or may not be a little better than a guesthouse, or just a different experience, more social. But in areas “off the beaten track” I doubt they will recognize the term “homestay.” In those cases if you “ask around” (using hand gestures) you might be directed to stay in someone’s home, in which case it would be nice to offer them some money. I’ve also heard of people staying in schools or temples. If you’re stuck and the sun is setting and you ask enough people, I’m sure someone will help out. Enjoy your ride!

Ok. Thanks for answer! 🙂

Thanks for this guide! So informative. My husband and I are riding from Dien Bien Phu to Laos tomorrow and we really needed that info on money exchange. Looking forward to chilling out in Laos!

Thank you for such an inspiring page! Always love seeing solo female travelers debunking the myth of “traveling is dangerous”. I’m heading to Laos in a couple months for work, and I want to bring a bicycle with me to do weekend trips. I was leaning towards a hybrid, but seeing your pictures I am more inclined to get a mountain bike. What are your thoughts? Will a hybrid suffice (I like the ability of getting a little bike for lifting purposes)?

Hi Maria, have fun in Laos! I rode on a rigid touring bike and got by, so I think a hybrid would be sufficient, especially with some wider tires. Most main roads are pavement or gravel. But if you want to explore WAY off the beaten track then perhaps a mountain bike would be helpful.

Bikes & Repairs

The bikes you will be riding are well-known makes of hybrid bikes or mountain bikes. The ones you receive depend on the type of tour.

During the tour, your guide will carry a reliable toolkit and help you in fixing any bike problems, so you only need to bring a daypack for your camera and other necessities. However, please note that we cannot guarantee being equipped for all types of repairs. If you are bringing your own bike, it is crucial to ensure that it is in good working condition before the tour. In case of any doubts, we recommend having it fully serviced by a bike shop before you embark on your journey.

Support Vehicle

Throughout the tour, you will have the security of a backup vehicle that will be with us at all times. The vehicle will transport your luggage, which we’ll move by support vehicle from each overnight stop to the next, and it can carry you if needed. The backup van will accompany us throughout the day, stopping roughly every 15 kilometers.

For your safety, wearing a helmet is mandatory during all of our biking adventures, and we strongly recommend it. If you refuse to wear a helmet, you will not be permitted to cycle. While your tour guide is well-trained in first aid and emergency rescue, it is important to note that you are largely responsible for your own safety while riding.

The terrain of the Laos cycling tour is diverse, hill, featuring mainly flat paths that follow a combination of tarmac and dirt roads through the countryside and rural villages. You will cycle on back roads that offer stunning, unobstructed views of the landscape, and we’ll make frequent stops every 15 kilometers to rest, snack, take pictures, and enjoy drinks.

Our guides are experienced in accommodating riders of all skill levels. In the event that you are unable to complete the distance, you can always hop into the support vehicle.

Our tour is designed to cater to cyclists of all levels of experience, fitness, ages, and backgrounds. We encourage all of our cyclists to embrace the challenges of the tour while respecting everyone’s individual limits.

Our tours are designed to accommodate each rider’s pace, and it’s important to note that this is not a race. We want everyone to enjoy the journey and take in the beautiful scenery at their own leisurely pace.

Health & Medical Conditions

As our tours are physically demanding, it’s essential that you are in good physical health and able to fully participate in the group tour. Before the start of your tour and at every stop during the trip, we require all travelers to provide details of any pre-existing medical conditions or to inform the tour guide if they feel unwell.

Disclosing this information is crucial to ensuring that we can respond effectively in case of an emergency. We take the safety and well-being of our travelers very seriously and appreciate your cooperation in providing us with the necessary information to keep everyone safe and healthy.

Extra Expenses

Our package tour includes most things, but we recommend budgeting for food and drinks if you choose to venture out at night or partake in additional activities. The cost of these activities will vary depending on what you choose to do.

We suggest bringing a small amount of cash, around US$30, for incidentals such as souvenirs or small purchases throughout the tour. Please note that this is only a recommendation, and you are free to bring more or less cash as you see fit.

The official national currency in Laos is the kip, however, Thai baht and US dollars are also used, especially in larger cities and towns. In smaller towns and villages, kip is usually preferred. There are now a few ATMs in Laos, but they are not widespread and are operational only sporadically. The best overall exchange rates are those offered at the BCEL (Banque pour le Commerce Extérieur Lao). Licensed moneychangers rates are similar to banks Spend all your kip before you leave as no one will exchange it for you once you leave the country!

Solo Traveller

We welcome a diverse range of cyclists on our tours, including couples, friends, and solo traveller. Our tour prices are based on twin shared accommodation, which means that if you sign up as a solo traveller, you will be paired with another person of the same gender in your group. However, if you prefer to have your own room, this is an option for most of our tours, but it will come with an additional charge.

Passport & Visa

All nationalities require a visa for Laos. You have two options to get a single-entry tourist visa (max 30 days): 1) E-Visa or 2) Visa on Arrival. Both are very straightforward processes, though we suggest procuring an E-Visa in advance as it will save you time on arrival in Laos.  Apply via  this website .  If you prefer to do a Visa On Arrival, make sure you have the required documents prepared (including 2 passport-sized photographs and the exact amount for the visa fee in USD). See  here  for more information.

Please Note : While E-Visa and Visa on Arrival are available for all international airports and major land borders, some border posts do not yet accept them. Therefore, if your tour crosses into Laos from Vietnam through a more remote border post, obtaining your visa through a Laotian Embassy or Consulate in advance may be required. If that is the case, we will let you know at the time of booking.

Yes, it is mandatory that all participants are well-insured for the full duration of the tour. This includes coverage for personal injury, medical expenses, death, repatriation, helicopter or aircraft rescue, loss of luggage or equipment, cancellation, or curtailments. It is important to ensure that your insurance policy does not have any exclusion clauses that limit protection for the type of activities included in your tour.

In the event of any claims related to matters for which you are insured, you should contact your insurers directly. We strongly recommend that you take out insurance at the time of booking your trip to ensure that you are covered in the event of cancellation.

The cooler season, is from November to February, with average temperatures between 20C and 30C (70- 86F). It can get a little cold at night at higher elevations year round so bring a light fleece for the evenings.

Best Time to  Laos Cycling Tours?

Laos is not so wide that you can stop looking at the beautiful sceneries. Just 6 weeks is the best time for you to enjoy all the majestic scenery at “the land of millions of elephants” in the cycling tour without using any means of transportation.

In cycling tours, you can bike Laos in any season of the year. The most common is during the cold months, from October to March. On April and May bring mild temperatures and it is the rainy season from June to September. On rainy days of the rainy season, you can make a bike trips quite pleasant and cool, as long as you do not mind the problem of getting wet. On the main roads, even if it’s the rainy season, it will certainly not make you hard. Even though it’s the muddy roads after the rain challenging your persistence, just by the determination of you, make sure that you can conquer it.

The Recommended Laos Cycling Routes

Actually, there are many destinations in Laos you can cycle bike and the time spend on the destination can be flexible to your request.

Short Route in Luang Prabang

You start the tour by going from the city center along the Mekong River and through the local village. Along the way, you will stop at two traditional villages. The first is Ban XiengLek – a village known for weaving and paper mulberry. After exploring this small village, we moved to the next village of Ban Xiang Hai, also known as Whiskey Village , because it is famous for producing Lao Laotian rice whiskey.

Laos cycling route in luang prabang

Continue, you will stop at Pak Ou, where the Nam Ou and the Mekong meet. Here, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the amazing limestone cliffs from the caves and rivers that form in the limestone landscape. Then, you will stop for a delicious lunch at the restaurant with great views of the river and Pak Ou caves.

After lunch and a short break, you will embark on a long tail boat for a boat ride across the Pak Ou Caves . You can see thousands of Buddha relics in both the lower and upper caves.

At the end of the day, you return to the boat to travel to Luang Prabang. It is time to relax and enjoy the magnificent views of the Mekong. Sailing takes about 1.5 hours to travel 25 km of the river. When you arrive in Luang Prabang, you return to the bike shop and return your bicycle.

Vientiane to Luang Prabang – A Laos Classic Cycling Route

This is a classic route which is the most tourists experience. You will have a relatively good start in Vientiane but when you approach Vang Vieng, the hills begin to roll and you will feel this stretch will be more dramatic. This can also be considered as one of the hardest routes when you have to conquer this road.

Laos cycling route

The distance from Vientiane to Luang Prabang is about 340km. And the duration is from 5-6 days riding and you are able to rest in Vang Vieng.

In this route, you will admire the overwhelmed landscape which is the majestic mountains, gentle hills, and fascinated people.  Cross to the quiet villages with all the colors of the ethnic, cultural, traditional. Moreover, you can stop to linger, interact with the people in the village with the warmest welcome, especially, the H’mong villages. The babies voice when saying “sabaydee” will definitely be a great motivator to help you on the next journey.

Don Det and the Bolaven Plateau – An Ideal Laos Cycling Route

If you are looking for a route that suits to your taste, sip some great coffee and swing on the hammock with palm trees swaying in the air, this is the best route for you. Although most of your journey is through rural villages, remember that you will never be alone because there are always plenty of kids willing to wave and give you a welcome hug when you pass. Most of these roads are on paved roads but there are some dusty roads that you can still pass through during the rainy season. The distance for this trip is about 585 km. About this distance, it will take about 8 days to complete this route.

Laos cycling route in Don Det

Some highlights in this route are that you can enjoy relaxing the moments on the hammock and swaying in the wind at Don Det, laid back Champasak , tasted coffee in Paksong and waterfalls in Tadlo after a long journey.

There are some tips for you during this long journey, as you should change money before your trip because, during this long journey, it’s too hard to find ATMs until you arrive in Savannakhet .
