Sight 6: Hunnerberg

Hunnerberg

The Hunnerberg is a district and Pleistocene moraine on the banks of the Waal river in Nijmegen. Its position along the Waal makes this low hill, just like the nearby Kops Plateau, a very strategic location. This is evident from the many archaeological finds, including two Roman castra with a Roman aqueduct, but also from many finds from the late Neolithic, Bronze Age and middle and late Iron Age. Excavations during construction work revealed that Fort Sterreschans was built on the remains of a camp of the Tenth Legion. In the Hunnerberg district, streets were named after Charles Estourgie, Eugène Lücker and Claas Noorduijn, among others.

free tour nijmegen

free tour nijmegen

De Walk of the Town is 7 kilometer lang.

How To Spend One Day In Nijmegen: Itinerary

This page may contain  affiliate links which earn us a commission at no extra cost to you to support the site. Thank you!

Looking for the best things to do in Nijmegen when visiting for the day? This one day Nijmegen itinerary shows you the best spots.

Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands, celebrating its 2000th birthday in 2005. And despite the young vibes the city has because of its many students, beautiful historic traces are found everywhere.

It’s definitely one of the hidden gems in the Netherlands, and very easy to get to from hot spots like Amsterdam and Utrecht. My sister studied her Master’s degree in the city, which is why I was able to spend a few days there, getting tips from her on the best places to visit in Nijmegen.

So, if you’re also planning a day trip to Nijmegen, here are some of the best spots you should include in your itinerary.

One Day In Nijmegen Itinerary

Nijmegen makes for the perfect day trip, as you can see most of its highlights in one day. If you’re spending one day in Nijmegen, make sure to check out the following:

Grote Markt

Like most European cities, Nijmegen has a large market square close to all the main sights. There are some restaurants and bars where you can sit in the evening and enjoy views of De Waagh, probably the most beautiful building in Nijmegen.

De Waagh dates back to the 1600s and is built in a stunning renaissance style. Nowadays, it houses a restaurant , but it has fulfilled many roles throughout the centuries. Nevertheless, it kept its beauty and remains the eye-catcher of the marketplace.

On the Grote Markt, you can also find the Stevenspoortje and see St. Stephen’s Church

grote markt nijmegen

Kronenburgerpark

Near Nijmegen central station, you can find Kronenburgpark. With some ponds, the ruins of a castle, and lovely green lawns, it’s the perfect green spot in the city to relax. Many students sit here when the sun’s out, but it’s also a great place for a little walk away from the shopping streets.

park in nijmegen

The Lange Hezelstraat

Just a few minutes from the Kronenburgpark, you can fid the Lange Hezelstreet. This is the oldest shopping street in the Netherlands and filled with unique, independent shops. While Nijmegen obviously has the regular stores like Zara and H&M, this street is much more fun to explore.

From a cowboy store, vintage shops, and independent lunchrooms, there is so much to see here. This is by far the best place to (window) shop in Nijmegen, and even if you’re not looking to buy anything, it’s still really fun to walk through it and browse.

hezelstraat nijmegen

Waal and the Waalbrug

Another place to tick off your Nijmegen list is the river Waal and the Wallbrug. While there’s not much to do near the riverside, it makes for a lovely little walk. And since Nijmegen has so many beautiful alleyways, you should definitely go for a wander around the city.

The bridge itself is 65 meters high and dates back to 1936. Queen Wilhelmenia opened it and it was the longest arch in Europe at the time it was built.

waal nijmegen

Dinner at Restaurant Wally

For dinner, we went to Restaurant Wally, the best burger place in Nijmegen. They serve 100% biological burgers, and they are absolutely delicious. My sister and I chose the Wally Burger, with cheese and their secret sauce.

There is some outside seating available, they have homemade lemonade, and there are also some veggie options. I’ll definitely be back!

wally burger nijmegen

And what’s a city break without tasting some of the local alcohol? Luckily, Nijmegen has its very own brewery serving some delicious craft beer in a beautiful setting.

De Hemel (translated to The Heaven) is located in a medieval monastery and on a warm afternoon or evening, you can sit underneath the lovely trees (I can imagine it is even prettier in spring or autumn!).

While there are tons of tasty drinks to choose from, you can also go for the beer tasting. There is the option to try six (€7,50) or ten tasters (€12,50), to try some of De Hemel’s best craft beer. We decided to go for the six tasters and it was such a nice experience to try lots of different beers for the price of two regular beers!

Where To Stay In Nijmegen

Even though you can see a lot when spending one day in Nijmegen, you may want to stay overnight. Especially if you’re going to see some other cities in the Netherlands! Here are my recommendations:

Blue Inspired by Manna

With a comfortable bed, stylish interior, inside a gorgeous building, the Blue Inspired by Manna hotel is one of the best hotels in Nijmegen. And since it’s near the station, it also has a perfect location for staying in Nijmegen for a couple of days.

where to stay in nijmegen

Guesthouse Vertoef offers large, modern rooms, and an on-site sauna. The hotel also offers bikes for rent, which is a perfect way to explore the city. It’s only 300 meters from the train station and only a 5-minute walk to the Grote Markt.

Is Nijmegen Worth Visiting?

Nijmegen is one of the most beautiful cities in the Netherlands , and definitely worth a visit. There is a lot to do in Nijmegen, and you can easily spend a few days here without getting bored. There are tons of opportunities for walks through the city to see all the highlights, and I also recommend going for a beer tasting at the local brewery De Hemel.

one day in nijmegen

Conclusion: One Day in Nijmegen Itinerary

And that concludes my Nijmegen itinerary. I absolutely loved visiting the city, and I was actually quite surprised at how lovely and beautiful it is. Especially since I never took the time before to visit, since I didn’t know too much about it. But I think it’s the perfect addition to your Netherlands itinerary if you’re already in the country since it’s super easy to get to.

Have you visited Nijmegen yet? If so, what was your favourite spot?

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson live stream, watch online, TV schedule, channel, tee times, radio, golf coverage

Only a couple of tournaments remain on the pga tour calendar before the second major championship of the season.

THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson - Previews

The PGA Tour returns to its regularly scheduled programming with a standard format of 72 holes of stroke play this week at the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson. Welcoming the normal cast of characters to TPC Craig Ranch for the fourth straight season, the PGA Tour embarks on its final full-field event before the PGA Championship to be held in two weeks.

After two rounds, it's PGA Tour rookie Jake Knapp taking the lead into Moving Day. Looking to become the first Tour rookie to win twice in one season since Xander Schauffele in 2017, Knapp topis an intriguing leaderboard that features plenty of capable chasers on a course that's already produced plenty of low numbers.

Last year's winner, Jason Day, is set to defend his title while two-time champion K.H. Lee hopes to grab his third Byron Nelson title in the last four years. Adam Scott, Sungjae Im and Min Woo Lee are among the rest of the large international contingent to round out the action.

All times Eastern; streaming start times approximated

Madonna’s Copacabana Beach concert marks the last stop on her acclaimed “Celebration Tour,” and also marks the singer’s first show in Brazil since 2012. Crews have set up a stage in front of the Belmond Copacabana Palace Hotel, and local officials have said the show could bring out as many as two million fans.

While previous stops on the tour have brought out special guests like FKA Twigs, Ricky Martin and Salma Hayek, it’s not clear who — if anyone — will appear on stage with Madonna tonight. Still, expect an appearance from Bob the Drag Queen (a.k.a. Caldwell Tidicue), who has opened for Madonna on all dates of the global tour.

Madonna has brought her tour to a close with a free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro , in front of a reported 1.6million fans.

It was the final night of her retrospective tour, marking her four decades in pop, which she has been taking around the world since last October.

AP News reported that she began the show telling the crowd : “Here we are in the most beautiful place in the world. This place is magic.”

Rio’s tourism agency said that 1.6million people attended the concert on the famous city beach, where huge events have taken place in the past. The Rolling Stones performed there to 1.2 million fans in 2006, and Rod Stewart gave the biggest free rock concert in history there in 1994, drawing 4million people (although more than a few may have been there for the annual New Year’s Eve fireworks extravaganza). Madonna’s previous largest live concert crowd was 130,000 fans in Paris in 1987.

Madonna's Final Celebration Tour Stop in Rio de Janeiro Draws Record-Breaking Audience of 1.6 Million

The Queen of Pop held a free concert at the Copacabana Beach as a "thank you" to her fans "for celebrating more than four decades of music" during her global tour

Madonna promised her fans the biggest dance party in the world — and the Queen of Pop delivered on May 4 in Rio de Janeiro.

In March the singer, 65, announced she would be performing a historic free concert at Copacabana Beach for her final Celebration Tour show, and on the night a record-breaking 1.6 million fans watched the pop superstar perform her final Celebration Tour concert.

The show made history as, though the annual New Year's Eve concerts at Copacabana Beach have drawn larger crowds, Madonna's May 4 audience was her biggest ever, and the largest ever for a stand-alone concert by any artist, a record previously held by The Rolling Stones.

During the show, Madonna played a host of hits, including "Like A Virgin," "Like A Prayer," and "Into The Groove."

For her performance of "Vogue," the pop icon was joined on stage by Anitta, who shared her delight on her Instagram Stories .

"@madonna soooo happy for being part of this incredible moment with you," she wrote across a video of the two artists together on stage during the concert.

Sponsored by Itaú Apresenta, the concert — her first in Brazil since 2012 — "will be free of charge as a thank you to her fans for celebration more than four decades of her music over the course of the epic global run of the tour," stated a press release.

The show took place in front of the Belmond Copacabana Palance Hotel, and entry was available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Material Girl kicked off her  long-awaited Celebration Tour  at London's O2 Arena in October with an electrifying two-hour set during which she opened up about her  road back to the stage  after  her hospitalization last year  following a  serious bacterial infection .

"I didn't think I was gonna make it. Neither did my doctors. That's why I woke up with all of my children sitting around me," Madonna  said of her kids  Lourdes, 27, Rocco, 23, David, 18, Mercy, 18, and twins Stella and Estere, 11. "But the angels were protecting me, and my children were there. And my children always save me every time."

Last month the singer shared a carousel of behind-the-scenes snaps of herself with her kids ( David, Mercy, Stella and Estere all performed alongside mom during her run of shows) from their past few months on tour.

"On the day before our 80th show of the Celebration Tour I need to acknowledge my incredibly talented children who carried me through this Journey each of them bringing their own unique talent to the stage," she wrote in the caption.
