2025 Mazda CX-90

2025 Mazda CX-90 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus 4dr SUV Exterior Shown

2025 Mazda CX-90 Review

mazda cx90 tour

  • Quick acceleration and sporty handling
  • Comfortable ride quality
  • Refined luxury-leaning interior
  • Above-average fuel economy for a three-row SUV
  • Below-average cargo capacity
  • Small third-row seat

What's new

  • No significant changes expected for 2025
  • Part of the first CX-90 generation introduced for 2024

The 2025 CX-90 is the largest SUV in Mazda's stable, with a bumper-to-bumper length 15 inches longer than the CX-50. The three-row CX-90 shares its size with the new CX-70, which is essentially a two-row variant. With plentiful power, sharper-than average handling and a luxurious interior, it fits well into the Mazda lineup. Like other Mazda SUVs, though, it's less practical overall than rivals, as pointed out in our Expert Rating below.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2025 Mazda CX-90 3.3 Turbo Select 4dr SUV AWD (3.3L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of N/A undefined in North Dakota.

Edmunds spotlight: big on performance, but not practicality.

With 340 horsepower available from the Turbo S models and the kind of sporty cornering abilities that Mazda is known for, the CX-90 is easily one of the more enjoyable three-row SUVs to drive. The problem is, most shoppers in this class prioritize practicality, and it comes up short in terms of both cargo capacity and third-row passenger space. As a result, we suggest paying close attention to both during a test drive to ensure it will meet your needs.

Competitors to consider

In the midsize three-row SUV class, the Kia Telluride has ruled supreme since its debut in 2020. It simply overdelivers for the price when it comes to features and space. Along the same lines, the related Hyundai Palisade is a very close second-place finisher. There's also the recent introduction of the Toyota Grand Highlander, which addresses some of the smaller Highlander's shortcomings and is available in an efficient hybrid model that would likely outperform the CX-90 PHEV in real-world efficiency.

What’s it like to live with?

Edmunds added a 2024 Mazda CX-90 plug-in hybrid to its long-term test fleet and we aim to log 20,000 miles over a year of ownership. We're documenting everything we like and what needs improvement, along with fuel economy and maintenance costs.

Edmunds Expert Rating

Performance, fuel economy, which cx-90 does edmunds recommend.

Mazda hasn't released official information on the 2025 CX-90 as of this writing. We'll update our recommendation if anything changes, but based on last year's CX-90, we steer shoppers toward the 3.3 Turbo S model . You get a bump in power output for a more Mazda-like experience, along with several convenience and technology features.

Mazda CX-90 models

The Mazda CX-90 is a three-row midsize SUV with seating for a maximum of eight passengers. The lineup can be a little confusing because there are three powertrain choices and five trim levels. Starting things out is what Mazda calls the 3.3 Turbo , which is a turbocharged 3.3-liter six-cylinder engine (280 horsepower, 332 lb-ft of torque). It's paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard. The 3.3 Turbo S increases output to 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Then there's the CX-90 PHEV that has a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Keep reading for more details and a rundown of the CX-90's most significant features.

Mazda pairs these powertrains with five trim levels: Select , Preferred , Preferred Plus , Premium and Premium Plus . There are some feature differences between some of the engine and trim levels.

3.3 Turbo Select This base model comes well equipped with a long list of standard features that include:

  • 19-inch alloy wheels
  • LED headlights
  • Power liftgate
  • Keyless entry and start
  • Tri-zone automatic climate control
  • Synthetic leather upholstery
  • Three third-row seats
  • 10.25-inch infotainment screen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
  • Eight-speaker audio system

Standard driver assist features include:

  • Frontal collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
  • Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between the vehicle and the car in front)
  • Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning (alerts you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while in reverse)
  • Lane keeping assistance (makes minor steering corrections to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane)
  • Driver attention monitor (issues an alert if sensors determine you are becoming fatigued)
  • Safe exit assist (can prevent a rear passenger from opening a door into traffic approaching from behind)
  • Rear seat reminder (alerts you to check the rear seat before exiting the vehicle)

3.3 Turbo Preferred Adds to the Select trim with:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats
  • Power-adjustable front passenger seat
  • Second-row sunshades
  • Additional USB charge ports

3.3 Turbo Preferred Plus This midrange trim adds a handful of convenience upgrades such as:

  • Increased towing capacity
  • Wireless charging pad
  • Wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Head-up display (displays important information in your sight line on the windshield)

3.3 Turbo Premium Dresses up the CX-90 with:

  • 21-inch wheels
  • Chrome exterior trim
  • Hands-free liftgate
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Second-row captain's chairs (reducing seating capacity to seven)
  • Integrated navigation system
  • Driver's seat memory functions
  • 12-speaker Bose audio system
  • Active blind-spot assistance (automatically steers the CX-90 back into its lane if you try to change lanes while a car is in the vehicle's blind spot)
  • Front and rear parking sensors

3.3 Turbo Premium Plus Tops off the base engine's feature list by way of:

  • Power-folding and auto-dimming exterior mirrors
  • Windshield wiper de-icer
  • Premium leather upholstery
  • Digital instrument panel
  • 12.3-inch infotainment screen
  • Heated second-row seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Ventilated front seats
  • Front cross-traffic warning with automatic braking
  • Surround-view camera system (gives you a top-down view of the vehicle and its surroundings for tight parking situations)
  • Automatic reverse braking (applies the brakes automatically to avoid an imminent collision with an object behind the vehicle)

3.3 Turbo S The first model with the more powerful engine goes without a trim level name but is similar in content to the 3.3 Turbo Premium trim. Note that it also has a two-person third-row seat, reducing capacity to seven passengers.

Turbo S Premium Upgrading to this trim generally gets you the features from the 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus. It has the second-row captain's chairs for six-passenger capacity.

Turbo S Premium Plus This top trim is outfitted identically to the 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus trim but adds:

  • Quilted leather upholstery
  • Ventilated second-row seats

The CX-90 PHEV has a simplified lineup consisting of Preferred, Premium and Premium Plus trim levels. See our CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid page for further explanation.

2024 Mazda CX-90 Pros and Cons: Affordable Athletic Luxury for the Whole Family

By Chris Tsui

mazda cx90 tour

Like most others who have spent time behind their artfully crafted steering wheels, I like a good Mazda . The CX-5 is a marvelous everyday driver, the CX-50 is a similar albeit more butch-looking alternative, the 3 is great , and the MX-5 is arguably the most fun-per-dollar you can have on four new wheels. When the company announced the new CX-90 three-row SUV to effectively replace the CX-9, I was curious to see how Mazda’s luxurious and agile character would translate to a big family hauler like this. Aimed squarely at the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, and Toyota Grand Highlander, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 unsurprisingly has a lot to like but also isn’t without a couple bugs and compromises.

mazda cx90 tour

Per usual with Mazda, the CX-90 drives great for its size, class, and price point. Well-calibrated, well-weighted steering and a chassis that feels as light as that of a crossover one size bracket down. The all-wheel-drive system and off-road mode more than held their own in a week of mild to heavy snow out in the Canadian Rockies. Even on all-season tires, it was able to put down power, carve corners in the snow at a reasonable pace, and even pull little, predictable powerslides.

Mazda’s new straight-six is smooth, interesting, and, of course, quite powerful. It’s also paired with a mild hybrid system that lets you glide to a stop and sometimes even cruise at highway speeds sans internal combustion. No, the engine doesn’t sound as smooth or nice as, say, BMW’s B58 but that’s a pretty high bar to clear. In the spirit of knowing the audience, engine codes like the one just mentioned don’t usually show up in reviews of mainstream family three-row SUVs but I suspect more than a few CX-90 buyers will indeed get the reference. Hands down the most enthusiast-focused of all the mainstream three-row SUVs, it’s essentially a Toyota Grand Highlander for people who Like Cars.

I was iffy on the CX-90’s looks at first (I still don’t think its front end is as exciting-looking as other Mazda designs) but it’s grown on me and I especially like the cab-back proportions that not-so-subtly hint at its longitudinal straight-six powertrain. The interior is quite attractive as well. Mazda has been on a luxury kick recently and this being the biggest, burliest, most luxurious gun in its arsenal, it is the brand’s fanciest cabin yet. There’s a soft suede material on the dash, and the brushed chrome is tasteful as is the ambient lighting at night.

Apple CarPlay is wireless but, in this example at least, my phone did not automatically connect every time I started the car. In most instances, I had to go into a menu and manually instruct the system to connect, which was quite annoying.

In exchange for class-leading handling is a noticeably less cushy ride. The CX-90 isn’t uncomfortable per se, but you do notice bumps in the road more than one probably should in a vehicle like this.

The most apparent thing holding it back from true luxury car status, though, is road noise. It’s a very far cry from the tinny 323 you had back in high school, but you can’t exactly whisper to your passenger while driving over rough pavement at 70 mph either. Some of the plastics, too, are noticeably budget like the swoopy trim on the doors. In a proper luxury-badged SUV, these would be an alloy whereas here, it’s hard, somewhat cheap-feeling plastic.

Crimping its practicality creds are relatively limited storage cubbies in the front row. There are pockets in the doors, glasses storage up top, two cupholders, a wireless charging shelf for your phone, and a shallow armrest cubby, but that’s it. No big, purse-enveloping spaces or shelves in front of the passenger for additional devices like you get in, say, the competing Toyota.

Quick Verdict

Just like most of its stablemates, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 is arguably the best-driving vehicle in its class and among the most nice feeling inside. Hyundai and Kia have upped their games in that last area in recent years with the Palisade and Telluride, respectively, while having infotainment systems that are admittedly better than the one Mazda offers. But those vehicles still use old, naturally aspirated V6s whereas the CX-90 boasts that new and really quite good turbo straight-six.

A couple of aspects hold the CX-90 back from truly competing with actual honest-to-god luxury cars, namely road noise, a sport-leaning ride, and buggy CarPlay integration. But on aesthetics, drive, and overall feel, this comes really close to stuff from Lexus and Acura while basically being one less reason for the Infiniti QX60 to live.

To sum up, the CX-90 successfully brings Mazda’s accessible luxury, athleticism, and record of excellence to the world of three rows and is definitely worth a test drive.
