Hillsong United are a christian worship band from Sydney, Australia, beginning life as a youth vocal group as part of Hillsong Church.

Hillsong Church is a Pentecostal megachurch, originally formed in Sydney but has since grown to form other churches globally, in cities such as New York, US and Stockholm, Sweden. The band started of as the house band for youth ministry "Powerhouse Youth," led by youth pastors Phil and Lucinda Dooley as a separate group affiliated with Hillsong. Playing a mixture of original and popular songs, they became a regular fixture, also performing at Youth Alive Australia and Hillsong Church. The band grew in number and influence, regularly performing at camps and monthly meetings.

In 1998, the band began recording their songs, first as the EP "One" and then a full album "Everyday" in 1999. These releases were a great success, achieving Gold status for the number of sales in Australia. The group rebranded themselves as Hillsong United, releasing albums on an annual basis. As well as album releases, they also release live DVDs of their performances.

The band, whilst consistently doing well in Australia and New Zealand, they have also had significant chart success in America. in 2013, "Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) reached number one on the American Billboard Christian Songs Chart, as well as the Billboard Hot 100. Their albums have also reached the number one position on the US Billboard Christian Albums Chart.

Their music often incorporates an eclectic mix of influences, from electronica, rock and gospel. They are often praised for their lyrical content as being amongst the best in the worship music industry.

Live reviews

As the hall fills with people and their expectations, we are left with a cold drink in one hand and a burning question in the other: “Who will save us?” The leaflet pictures the cover of 'Zion,' the band’s latest album, and an empty stage awaiting to be filled by the 11 musicians strong ensemble. The striking resemblance to the real thing before our eyes is certainly not accidental, as almost exactly the same image appears when looking at the stage area. The increasingly vociferous crowd of teenagers and their excited mums drives our attention towards the main area. There is the kind of trepidation that is proper of a hormones-driven congregation, and we find our little niche at a safe distance. Just in time; because when Joel Houston and Jonathan "JD" Douglass take the stage, they do so almost pulled by the energy originated by the warmer and denser centre of the standing area. It is a matter of seconds and the rest of the band fills their positions: 3, 2, 1 and “Relentless” transforms the nervousness into pure excitement. “Salvation sounds a new beginning,” a radiant Houston mutters, almost overwhelmed by his audience’s response. The venue appears as small as ever, and the imposing amps on both sides of the stage can hardly keep up with the roaring reception. “You guys are fantastic! It almost feels like home. Just with more rain,” guitarist Dylan Thomas shouts at some point.

This is rock and pop and choruses. Whenever the music drifts too far from radio-friendliness, a refrain leads the song back to its pop roots. And the cycle repeats itself on the next song. “From the Inside Out,” “Scandal of Grace,” “Aftermath” and “Mighty To Save” flow without interruption, in a race towards the beautiful anthemic power ballad that is “The Stand” or the catchy sing-a-long that is “Nothing Like Your Love.” It’s no surprise that most of the songs performed are from 'Zion' – the band’s most successful album to date – but the crowd can’t get enough of the old material as well, therefore it is when “All I Need Is You” and “Freedom Is Here” emerge from the speakers, that the tension eases and we find ourselves in the midst of an eruption of tears and joy from parts of the audience. If the intent behind 'Hillsong United' is of a religious nature, the effect the band has on its crowd is such that one has to wonder whether the youngest exponents of their fanbase successfully receive the message. Their approach is simple, their taste in clothing is no different from the one of their average buff, and even the videos projected behind the band are uncomplicated and easily appreciated by the bystanders.

The show started with some delay due to an issue with the lighting system, so we approach the curfew with the type of relief the little army of fathers at the back expresses with smiles while quickly finishing their drinks. But there is still time for “Your Name High,” “Wake” and “Alive”. A series of thank yous and God bless yous is produced on the stage, but then the lights are turned on and we're back to reality.

A Hillsong concert is an incredible experience, whether you are religious or not. Hillsong United are possibly the world’s leading Christian worship band. Originally set up to lead worship in the dynamic Hillsong Church in Australia, the group now play huge arena and festival gigs across the world. The Church has also become a global phenomenon.

A Hillsong concert is a spiritual and musical event. Honestly, the only way to appreciate this band is to see them live. No group generate greater audience participation. Though perhaps ‘audience participation’ isn’t quite the right phrase. Many of the crowd will be worshipping. Since the band’s songs are used in churches, much of the audience is well-versed. Indeed, as a teenager I attended England’s Soul Survivor festival. The whole four days seemed to echo with that great ‘who-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh’ of ‘Living to Make Your Name High.’ And when Hillsong perform this track, thousands of voices yelling the name ‘Jesus’ is truly thrilling.

One of Hillsong United’s largest concerts to date was their Miami 2012 gig. The outdoor venue was huge and the atmosphere was breathtaking. Simon Koblet’s drum intro to ‘You’ immediately jolted the audience into a frenzy. And Joel Houston’s vocals rang with feeling, leading the rest of the band and the crowd through the powerful song.

A Hillsong concert is not to be missed. Whether you’re a Christian, are intrigued by spiritual experiences, want to witness Christianity’s dynamic youth scene, or simply want to attend one of the most energetic and emotive gigs of all time, buy tickets. It’s an awesome experience.

Mack Brock, Amanda Lindsey Cook, and Hillsong were absolutely amazing. Everywhere I looked through everyone in attendance, I felt and saw the Lord in all his wonder. I've been to a handful of Christian concerts where the Lord was not the main act, however this one was anything but that. A truly blessed event. God willing, I am looking forward to seeing Mack Brock on his next tour where he is able to play more of his songs. I missed most of his set when he toured with Rend Collective because I was in a very long line at the concession and also this tour because I was in line looking at t-shirts when he started 10 minutes earlier than expected. I feel a great connection to God through his songs and grateful for the songs I was able to witness. Amanda was a wonderful surprise. I was only familiar with a couple of her songs but she had this quietness about her and a genuine and clear enthusiasm for Jesus Christ. A blessed performer and blessed to witness. Hillsong was just amazing and to share it with my daughter, sister-in-law and especially my wife was a blessing. There was so much love for the Lord in that coliseum I couldn't contain myself. Would go to see them a hundred billion times. God bless.

Hillsong Worship - No Other Name Tour, August 14th, 2014, Agganis Arena, Boston Ma. Wow! Tremendous show, musically and spiritually connecting the entire audience in peace and love with Jesus. Musicianship was excellent, but it was not about the music. It was about Jesus and his mercy and Grace abounds. Standing on the floor about 15 feet back from the stage with arms held wide open and the Band just responding to every hearts outpouring of love made this show the best musical event I have ever been to in 54 years of life in this world. Breathtaking Experience.

We attended the Oklahoma City concert on Friday, July 21. We had attended another of Hillsong United's concerts so were excited to see/hear this one. Lauren Daigle opened and she was great! Hillsong United was even better than the first time we attended! They played songs from the new album as well as old favorites. The video and lights were amazing! Their message is delivered well and support their Christian mission. Hope to see them again!

Euuu ameiii o show, ouço a Hillsong desde 2008, meu primeiro contato com a banda foi ouvindo Sing to the lord, pela televisão, conheço a trajetória da igreja, e mesmo não sabendo falar inglês eu sinto a presença de Deus nos louvores, eles são muitoo simpáticos e incríveis, que Deus possa abençoa-los cada vez mais para que eles tenham forças para levar o evangelho a todos que precisam, recomendo mil vezes.

The title would be Went to a concert but had Church instead!! It was awesome!! Three hours of praising our Lord and Savior...it does not get any better than that. I think it was a glimpse of what heaven will be like. I do not think their was a person there that was not touched by the concert. I will definitely go see them again when they come near my area. If you get the chance go you will be changed.

The show was great! As always, Hillsong delivered. Taylor's voice and energy cannot be matched. Rend Collective only played about 5 songs, but they were all hits and high-energy. Hillsong played a collection of new and old hits. The concert started promptly at 7:00pm with Rend Collective and ended around 10:45pm. There was a slight "break" between the artists performances. Great show! Worth it!!

WOW! Just....Wow. Hillsong United was incredible. From visuals to vocals to alter calls and communion. Nothing was left on the table at this show. These guys (and gyals shoutout to Taya) came out and led worship for 3.5 hours, non stop. I have a new appreciation for this band and the way God is using them to show the world what it means to look and sound like a Christian. Keep shining, Hillsong Team.

What a glorious night of worship!I cannot imagine how it must be to juggle all the concerts they do and their families and church but most of all, to stay focused on God day in and day out no matter what's happening around them. But praise God and his Holy Spirit they seem to be doing it. Thank you Hillsong and Amanda and Brock for you're faithfulness! It was awesome!

Tipping is an elusive custom all over the world, and Asia is no exception. A common mistake tourists make is tipping in the first place. It's not customary to tip in many Asian countries, and in some instances, it's even considered rude.

Don't stress – it's not as complex as it seems. Just follow this guide to tipping across Asia .

Restaurants and bars

China , Myanmar , Singapore and Taiwan do not have a strong tipping culture, so leaving extra money at the end of the meal or in a bar is largely deemed unnecessary. However, influenced by the influx of overseas tourists into larger cities, some chic new restaurants in China are starting to accept small tips when offered. 

Hospitality workers in much of Southeast Asia, including Cambodia , Thailand , Vietnam , Indonesia and Malaysia , are becoming more and more accustomed to receiving tips, though tipping culture in non-touristy areas is not customary, other than perhaps rounding up the bill. For tourist spots, it's very much formed by international visitors. Because of Southeast Asia's proximity to Australia and China (non-tipping cultures), locals know not to expect tips from these groups of visitors, though Americans and Europeans tend to tip, so it's very hit or miss. 

In India , tipping is customary. Aim to tip 10-15% at bars, cafes and restaurants regardless of whether a service charge is included (since this doesn't always benefit servers ), especially in smaller establishments.

In the Maldives and Bhutan, tipping is not customary but appreciated. For both countries, aim for a 10-15% tip, but note that a 10% service charge applies in both regions when you dine out, and in that case, an additional tip is not expected.

In most of Central Asia, tipping is not expected unless you're staying or dining in ritzier places (where it is sometimes customary to add 5% to the 10% service charge). 

Other Asian countries, including Japan and Nepal , believe that tipping is only for exceptionally good service – being treated with hospitality and warmth is the norm and shouldn't be "rewarded." In Japan, some servers might even politely refuse a tip if you leave one.

Hotel staff

China's no-tipping culture prevails when it comes to hotels, but if you're living the high life in a particularly luxurious establishment, feel free to tip the porter around 5 yuan per bag. You may also find that in high-end hotels, a 10% service charge will be added to the overall bill. Japanese hotels also do not expect their staff to be tipped, particularly in a traditional ryokan (inn). If you feel particularly inclined, leave around 5000 yen (for a short stay) in an envelope, but it may be politely refused if you hand it over in person. 

India's hotel staff are notoriously poorly paid, so tipping the porter at least ₹100 per bag and the housekeeping staff ₹250-300 per night (₹500 in five-star hotels) are particularly welcome gestures.

Throughout most of Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines , Singapore , Vietnam and Malaysia, a service charge will almost always be included in your overall bill upon checkout, so tips are not expected. However, it isn't uncommon to tip porters the local currency equivalent of US$1-2 per bag. Tipping housekeeping staff in larger hotels is more common than in smaller establishments.

Tour guides

As you can probably guess by now, tour guides and drivers in China do not expect tips. South Korean and Taiwanese tour guides do expect to take home a little extra on organized excursions – around 10% of the tour cost is fine to split between the guide and driver. In Japan, tip tour guides around 2500 to 5000 yen for a full day, handed over in an envelope. If you're using a private driver, it's a nice gesture to offer to buy them lunch.

A general rule of thumb in India is to tip ₹500 per day for guides and ₹500-₹600 per day for drivers (up to ₹800- ₹1000 for more than two passengers).

In Singapore and the Philippines, tipping tour guides and drivers a combined 10% of the overall tour cost is fair – they should split it between themselves. In other Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia and Indonesia, tipping around US$10 to $20 (on the higher end for couples or families) for a tour guide per day, and half of that amount for the driver is appreciated. It's customary to give the total tipping amount to the guide, who will then siphon off some for the driver. If on a trek, tipping porters $10 to $20 per day is customary.

Taxi drivers

Taxi drivers in China or South Korea do not expect tips, but rounding up the fare is standard practice in Japan. Indian taxi and rickshaw drivers are not accustomed to tips (however much they will insist otherwise), but telling them to keep the change is a genial gesture. In Central Asia, visitors are encouraged to tip drivers US$10-15.

In Singapore, the local currency equivalent of US$1 is a good tip for taxi and tuk tuk drivers, while in Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia, a 10% tip for fixed-fare rides is standard. In Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia, tipping taxi drivers is not required. However, it's appreciated when passengers simply round up the fare or offer the driver to keep the change.

Mosques and temples

There isn't a hard-and-fast rule here, though there's usually a donation box available. Robes and scarves for women are usually free of charge, and no tip is expected for the person handing them out. 

Thai massages

If you grab a quick massage on the Khao San Road or similar, don't feel obliged to tip more than 30 baht. If you indulge in a more upmarket massage, your tip should be around the 150 to 300 baht mark. Resorts and retreats that include multiple treatments will usually state the tipping policy upfront.

In certain industries (like spas) in Southeast Asia, workers typically get a fraction of the cost of the treatment from the shop, so tips are appreciated. In Vietnam, returning patrons often tip 50-75% of the treatment, especially if requesting a specific therapist. In more touristed areas, there is sometimes signage that tipping is included. Otherwise, 10-20% is customary, especially in posh hotel spas.

When traveling in the Middle East and South Asia, you will often be asked for "baksheesh." The term usually applies to a simple gratuity or service charge but can refer to all kinds of financial tokens of appreciation. If someone asks you for baksheesh without providing a service, this is considered begging, so giving money is completely at your discretion, although not usually advisable. Baksheesh can be politely asked for by those who have provided a service, but it can be refused at any time, and – like almost all tipping customs – it is not mandatory, whatever you may be led to believe.

It's finally happening. 

After three shows as part of the Good Things festivals late in 2022, one Tasmanian date earlier this year, and a couple of super-secret warm-up shows around Melbourne, anonymous Australian agitators TISM are getting on the road for their first headline tour in 20 years. 

They're also bringing a seriously impressive line-up of local talent along for the ride. It's going to be huge. 

Seeing the legendary live band perform again was a prospect that seemed completely impossible for so many years, but fans along the east coast will get their chance before the year is through. 

If you're not familiar with the band's unique charms, it's honestly hard to know where to begin. Their 1994 album Machiavelli and the Four Seasons is probably their most popular and highly regarded release, and their appearances on shows like Recovery and Hey Hey It's Saturday are essential viewing.

TISM have been cooking up some more new music after releasing their first single in almost two decades earlier this year . They recently backed it up with 'Death To Art', the second taste of the new iteration of TISM. Have a listen below.

As if all this wasn't reason enough for celebration, the tour will also feature another unexpected reunion from a band who made a huge splash around the turn of the century. 

Machine Gun Fellatio were as revered for their wild live shows as they were their inescapable wonderfully warped-pop songs, which is really saying something given they made the Hottest 100 on ten occasions. 

Debauchery was the name of the game for the band back in the early 2000s, as their circus-like live shows injected a wild energy to festival main stages and theatres across the country. 

They weren't around for a long time, but they sure knew how to have a good time. This will no doubt be the case again when they regather for their first shows in almost 20 years in just a couple of months. 

And the fun doesn't stop there. 

Eskimo Joe have been a mainstay of the Australian alternative scene for over 25 years. While it's been a while since their last album, they continue to command big crowds thanks to their immense back catalogue, and they'll provide plenty of big singalong opportunities at these shows.

Then there's the great Ben Lee , a guy who penned some seriously big tunes in the 90s and 2000s, and who continues to make music his own way 30 years on from his excellent first releases. This guy's latest album was called I'm Fun! , so we reckon his spot on this line-up makes a whole lot of sense.

Getting the party started at all shows will be The Mavis's , the Melbourne band who also reunited relatively recently much to the delight of their impassioned fans.

PARIS (AP) — The Paris Olympics are coming to a close on Sunday.

U.S. gymnastics star Simone Biles made a triumphant return, taking her Olympic gold tally to seven. French swimmer Léon Marchand won five medals — four of them gold — fulfilling comparisons to Michael Phelps. Armand “Mondo” Duplantis won another gold medal, but the real show for the 80,000 at the Stade de France — which will be the site of Sunday’s closing ceremony — was when he broke the world record for the ninth time.

Sha’Carri Richardson rallied in the anchor leg to lead the U.S. to a win in the 4x100 meter relay and claim her first Olympic gold medal.

Boxer Imane Khelif of Algeria won a gold medal after being in the spotlight because of misconceptions about her gender , and breaking made its Olympic debut with Japan’s b-girl Ami taking the gold.

Organizers of the Paris Games have, for the most part, successfully showcased the beauty of the French capital. Beach volleyball has taken place next to the Eiffel Tower . Holding events in the polluted Seine River , however, has proven more difficult.

The women’s basketball gold medal game between the United States and France is the last event before the closing ceremony. It’s scheduled to tip off at 3:30 p.m. CEST (9:30 a.m. EDT) at Bercy Arena.

The closing ceremony is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. CEST (3 p.m. EDT) on Sunday at Stade de France just north of Paris. It’s expected to last until 11:15 p.m. CEST (5:15 p.m. EDT).

It will feature traditional highlights, including the athletes’ parade and the handover of the Olympic flag to the organizers of the 2028 Los Angeles Games . It’s a more traditional setting after the Seine River was used for the audacious opening ceremony , but don’t expect it to be dull. It features the same artistic director — Thomas Jolly. Organizers said in a recent statement that it will include “over a hundred performers, acrobats, dancers and circus artists.” There will be musical performances and “the participation of world-renowned singers will complete the picture. ... Part of the show will take place in the air, while the giant sets, costumes and spectacular lighting effects will take spectators on a journey through time, both past and future.”

Jolly added: “It’s a very visual, very choreographic, very acrobatic show with an operatic dimension to give a great visual fresco and say goodbye to athletes from all over the world.”

If you're curious about what you can find in these shops , or not sure you'd feel welcome on your own, this is your chance to peek inside. Erie Arts & Culture hosts walking tours through September of several of the shops on Parade Street selling goods that don't make the shelves of the typical American supermarket: Exotic produce, frozen staples, meats, baked goods, beverages, housewares, cookware, clothing and more.

"This is the American dream for them," said tour guide Wujan Ahmad about the store owners on the tour. "This is the epitome of the American dream. We wanted to focus on and feature refugee-owned businesses that are local."

That's what 16 people gathered to see on a tour July 20.

Tour the dream

"We like to do things like this to learn about the places we visit," said Nancy Cavanaugh, who took the tour with her husband, Terry Cavanaugh. "We've also done tours in Pensacola, Florida, and Mobile, Alabama."

Cindy Andrus said she signed up for the tour to learn about her own community.

"We drive by and get curious about these places, but until someone gets us motivated, we don't stop and go in," she said.

What do you see?

First, meet your guide, Wujdan Ahmad (also known as "Wuji"). She was born in Baghdad, Iraq, in 1993, and also lived in Jordan before moving with her family to the United States in 2001 when she was 8 years old.

She works for EAC and knows these businesses inside and out. She speaks loudly enough to be heard outside, and is enthusiastic about the tour's popularity.

The tour offers an introduction to each store by its owner, a sample of a treat you might find there, such as Turkish coffee (Almadina), spicy snacks (UK International), or Vim-to slushies (Moe's One Stop Shop), and more. Don't miss the ginger/coconut hard candy at UK.

Store owners, knowing the diversity of the neighborhood, stock items for cooking by Indians, Nepalis, Bhutanese, Africans, Eastern Europeans, Russia, southeast Asia and the Middle East.

The owners are all immigrants themselves, including Mohammad Alnasari at Almadina, 2325 Parade St., who passed out samples of Turkish coffee while describing the store. He's been in Erie for 25 years.

"Erie is my home. I don't want to go anywhere else," Alnasari said.

The first stop is UK International Supermarket, run by brothers, Pradit and Mohan Upreti, who came here in 2010 from Nepal. Their store isn't named for the British Isles, but is rather a combination of their last initial and another family name.

Moe's All-in-One, 2401 Parade St., owned by Amir Silmi, stocks not just ethnic groceries and snacks, but also hair and other beauty products, as well as telecommunication devices.

"We started as a pager store," said Silmi, adding that he's Palestinian and that his family came to America in 1971. He's been in business since 1997.

Moe's offers at least one thing everyone needs to try this summer: Vim-to slushies. Vim-to is a soft drink popular in the British Isles as well as in the Middle East, made with grapes, raspberries, black currants, herbs and spices blended with sweetener. It's sold in bottles and cans up and down Parade Street, but Moe's is the place to go for a dark purple slushie made with the soda.

Fadak International Foods, 2601 Parade St., is owned by an Iraqi family headed by Ruqaia Kadhim. The family also owns the Halal Eats restaurant, at 2825 Raspberry St. All the meat in both the market and restaurant are halal-certified, meaning it has been slaughtered and blessed by an Arab cleric. Fadak also offers fresh produce and dry goods.

"Everyone was so gracious," said Cindy Andrus, who took the tour with her friend, Aileen Baxter. "I was not expecting to find that the prices were better."

Indeed, many of the ethnic goods we pay for at traditional American supermarkets are sold more cheaply at the ethnic stores on Parade, such as spices, produce and other staples.

Lori Lidley, who is on the board of Erie Arts and Culture, is also dean of the College of Humanities at Gannon University, inspired two of her friends to join her on the tour.

"I thought it looked interesting," Lidley said. "I wanted to see some of these businesses and learn about different types of food."

Brittany Hayden brought her two nephews who were visiting from Texas.

"I wanted them to get a cultural snapshot of Erie," she said. "I wanted them to meet the refugees and new Americans and show them the food."

When can you take the tour?

Remaining tour dates include Aug. 3, 10 a.m. to noon; Aug. 17, 3 to 5 p.m.; Sept. 7, 10 a.m. to noon; and Sept. 21 from 3 to 5 p.m. The tours are $30 per person.
