Review: Beyoncé proved why she's 'one of one' at 'Renaissance World Tour' in Seattle

Beyoncé at Lumen Field in Seattle on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023. (Image:{ }Julian Dakdouk)

Lumen Field was a sea of silver and clacking fans Thursday night when Queen Bey brought her historic "Renaissance World Tour" to the Emerald City. Seahawks hats were replaced by mirror ball cowboy hats, and 12s jerseys were traded for denim and sequins. The energy was palpable in that stadium long before Beyoncé graced the stage. Seattle was ready.

I only had 24 hours to prepare for the show (you don't get much notice if you are approved to cover a concert or not), but when Beyoncé tells you to wear silver for Virgo season — you listen to her. I found all the silver I could, put on my tallest thigh-high boots and headed to SoDo. It was sunny and blue skies for Bey Day. Going into the night, I already knew I was going to be blown away. There was no doubt about that. It's Beyoncé — it's the "Renaissance World Tour." Excellence was expected. I've heard from countless friends how awe-inspiring this concert is, but hearing about it, reading a review or seeing a TikTok is one thing; witnessing her greatness with your own eyes, however, is another.

Beyoncé is a world-class performer. Every detail was perfection, and I'd expect nothing less from one of history's most famous Virgos. I also must point out that she performed in Seattle on the Virgo new moon of Virgo season — iconic for us, truly. From the choreography to her vocals and the ever-changing and massive stage set, my jaw found a permanent home on the floor. Seriously, I might have to start paying rent at Lumen Field, because it might still be there.

The setlist was a perfect balance of deep cuts, some of her most famous songs like "Crazy in Love" and "Naughty Girl," and, of course, countless hits from her most recent and GRAMMY Award-winning album, "Renaissance."

She did not have an opener, because why would she need one? Beyoncé wasted not one second — the moment she stepped on stage and opened her mouth, I was captivated. Is it possible for someone to sound more perfect live than recorded? Because I have never heard vocals like I heard in the first four songs — "Dangerously in Love 2," "Flaws and All," "1+1" and "I Care" — of this tour. They showcased her voice and range flawlessly and set the tone for the night. She was dressed in a beautiful silver and mesh gown. It was just her, us and her music. I am convinced Beyoncé is actually an angel on Earth, and it was hard to fathom that she was real and right there.

"I want to say thank you for being here," she said before signing "Flaws and All." "There is nothing more beautiful than seeing the joy on your faces, and I am so grateful to be on this stage. I have been performing professionally for 27 years [...] And it's because of all of you and your loyalty and your prayers and your love, and I'm so thankful. Thank y'all for riding with me."

After that, the real party began, and we got our first taste of "Renaissance" with the trifecta of "I'M THAT GIRL," COZY" and "ALIEN SUPERSTAR."

Now...I want to address the elephant in the room — the mute challenge. For those unfamiliar, during her song "ENERGY," when Beyoncé says, "Look around everybody on mute," the crowd is expected to go mute — complete silence — until she continues the song by singing, "Look around it's me and my crew." Aside from wearing silver during Virgo season, it's pretty much the only thing she asks of us during the show. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Seattle did...terrible. There was maybe one full second of complete silence. I know this is the home of the 12s, the loudest fanbase in the NFL, but I really had high hopes we'd pull through on this, and we sadly did not.

I just hope Beyoncé can forgive us because what we did succeed at was singing "Love On Top." During the chorus of the song where the octaves rise, the music stopped, and the crowd went full acapella and sang it to her, rather than her singing it to us. Beyoncé had the biggest smile on her face, and I think we made her proud at that moment. Also, can we just take a moment to appreciate the transition from "Love On Top" to "Crazy in Love"? The way I gasped.

Beyoncé's stage presence is absolutely insane, but to me, she seemed to have the most fun on stage during "BREAK MY SOUL," her debut single from "Renaissance." I could feel her energy the most during this song. It was just a blast to watch.

The song I was most looking forward to seeing her perform was "HEATED," and it was worth it. Beyoncé owned that stage in a sparkly, silver jumpsuit with accenting black hand detail. Fire blasted around her, fireworks shot to the sky and you couldn't look to your left or right without seeing someone clacking their fans in the air. In my notes during this top-tier performance, I wrote, "Can Jay-Z fight?" Beyoncé really is that girl.

But if I had to choose my absolute favorite moment, it would be when Blue Ivy made her appearance on stage during "MY POWER." It's a moment I have seen hundreds of times on social media, but to see for myself just how absolutely proud Beyoncé is of her daughter was something special. That is proud mama right there and with good reason. Blue Ivy is only 11 years old, performing in front of tens of thousands of people on one of the biggest tours of all time. That takes guts. I remember watching Beyoncé perform "Love On Top" at the 2011 VMAs when she announced she was pregnant with Blue Ivy. It was surreal to see Beyoncé's firstborn live, more than a decade later, following in her mother's footsteps.

Last night was a blur of silver and emotions. The "Renaissance World Tour" hits every mark and lives up to the hype it so well deserves. She's one of one. She's the only one. She's Beyoncé, and she left her mark on Seattle.

Beyoncé coming to Seattle on Renaissance World Tour

Michael Rietmulder

Despite all those warm, joyful feelings building in the pit of your stomach right now, no, it is not Christmas in Seattle.

However, Seattleites woke up Wednesday morning to a string of good news: Soundgarden is nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Tom Brady will never play professional football again and Beyoncé is coming to Seattle.

In an Instagram post, the pop superstar announced her long-rumored Renaissance World Tour, which will include a Sept. 13 stop at Lumen Field. Now through Feb. 9, fans can register for three different presales through Ticketmaster/Live Nation’s Verified Fan . The first presale through the artist’s BeyHive fan club begins Feb. 6, ahead of the general Verified Fan onsale Feb. 18. Registering through Verified Fan enters fans in a “lottery-style process” for the chance to purchase tickets, but does not guarantee them.

Ticketmaster’s handling of Beyoncé’s tour will be closely watched, after the company’s botched rollout of Taylor Swift tickets led to a hearing in the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee last week.

News of the tour comes days before the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, where Beyoncé has a leading nine nominations, all stemming from last summer’s “Renaissance” album.

Beyoncé last performed at the stadium formerly known as CenturyLink in 2018, closing out her joint On the Run II Tour with Jay-Z. The set list played like the most epic Bey-and-Jay mixtape imaginable, with the couple taking turns rocking the stage solo and together, accentuating their disparate performance styles.

Lady Gaga Reveals LG7 Release Date, Describes Fiancé's Marching Orders: 'You Need to Make Pop Music'

See latest videos, charts and news

The announcement photo may look familiar to fans, as she donned the same glittery attire on the cover of her seventh studio album. Bey also added “Renaissance World Tour” on her Instagram bio, further accenting the news. Last week, Beyonce performed a full concert for the first time in four years at a luxury resort in Dubai in front of influencers and journalists. The 19-song set included a collaboration with her oldest daughter Blue Ivy as the two performed “Brown Skin Girl,” which earned them a Grammy two years ago for best music video.

Crowned a triumphant win by music lovers, Renaissance stormed to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 last year and rattled off two Hot 100 top 10 hits, including her chart-topper “Break My Soul.” The dance-centric album also notched nine Grammy nominations, the most for any nominee for this year’s ceremony. Bey is looking to rack up more trophy wins, as she currently sits at a staggering 28 wins. Nominated for album of the year, song, and record of the year, Bey is facing some stout competition , especially in the former. The R&B juggernaut will tango against Adele, Harry Styles, Kendrick Lamar, Bad Bunny, and more for album of the year. A win in this category would serve as Beyonce’s first. The 65th Grammy Awards will occur Sunday night in Los Angeles at 8 pm EST.

Where can you get tickets?

Tickets for the North American leg of the tour will be available through Ticketmaster's Verified Fan program. Tickets will go on sale Monday, Feb 6, with an exclusive presale to BeyHive members, according to a Live Nation press release.

Verified Fan registration is now open. Once you register, you'll be placed in a lottery system that determines which fans get invited to purchase tickets. Registration alone doesn't guarantee tickets. If you're selected, you'll get an access code the day before tickets go on sale. Everyone else will be placed on a waitlist. According to Live Nation, this process is intended to help Ticketmaster weed out the resellers and verify your account so that actual fans get priority to buy tickets.

Register for Tickets

Citi cardmembers will have a special Citi Presale after the Verified Fan process. Get more details here . Verizon will also offer an exclusive presale through their customer loyalty program Verizon Up .

Will Beyoncé be using Ticketmaster like Taylor Swift to sell tickets?

Yes, but given what happened with Taylor Swift's Eras tour (and the fact it led to Congressional hearings about Ticketmaster ’s practices), it seems very likely both Beyoncé and Ticketmaster would want to avoid repeating that mess. That most likely explains the usage of the Verified Fan system.

Where will Beyoncé be playing?

The Renaissance World Tour will hit 40 cities in North America and across Europe. Stops include Paris, London, Amsterdam, Toronto, Chicago, East Rutherford, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Houston, and many more.

What has Beyoncé said about the Renaissance World Tour?

She just announced it was happening with a post on February 1. Her website didn't immediately contain any more details. But during the Wearable Art Gala in October 2022, she appeared to confirm it would start this summer, as a backstage tour with her mother Tina Lawson was up for auction at the event.

Will Beyoncé be performing at the Grammys (on February 5) and sharing more tour details there?

Not clear yet, but she is the most nominated artist at the ceremony . On January 21, Variety reported that “ talks with show producers are ongoing for a possible onstage appearance ” by Beyoncé.

What can we expect from the tour on stage?

Beyoncé hasn't shared that yet either, but given the artistry she put into her recent Dubai show , it's fair to say we can expect no less than excellence, elaborate costumes, and an incredible experience.

This post will be updated the moment more detail is released.

Beyoncé Announces Renaissance World Tour 2023 with Stops in 25 U.S. Cities

The "Crazy in Love" singer confirmed the hugely anticipated stadium tour on Instagram Wednesday morning

beyonce tour seattle 2023

Beyoncé is back, baby!

The singer, who is up for nine Grammys this Sunday , revealed her Renaissance World Tour 2023 on Wednesday morning in an Instagram post — coincidentally, (or perhaps, very strategically!) six years to the day she announced her surprise pregnancy with twins .

The highly anticipated tour — produced by Parkwood Entertainment and promoted by Live Nation — is set to kick off in Europe on May 10 at Friends Arena in Stockholm, Sweden before touring overseas in Cardiff, Edinburgh, Sunderland, Paris, London, Marseille, Amsterdam, Warsaw and more.

A North American leg of the tour begins on July 8 in Toronto, Canada before hitting 25 U.S. cities including Philadelphia, Nashville, Louisville, Minneapolis, Chicago, Detroit, East Rutherford, Boston, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., Charlotte, Atlanta, Tampa, Miami, St. Louis, Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Inglewood, Vancouver, Seattle, Kansas City, Dallas, and Houston.

The tour is currently scheduled to wrap on Sept. 27 in New Orleans.

For complete ticket information, visit tour.beyonce.com .

Beyonce's last tour was 2018's On the Run tour which hit 48 cities in North America and Europe. Beyoncé last performed a full concert back in 2018, when she and JAY-Z, 53, appeared at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 event .

The tour announcement comes just over one week after Queen Bey performed her first full concert in more than four years, when she performed an hour-long set at the new Atlantis The Royal Resort in Dubai.

For more on Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour announcement, listen below to our daily podcast PEOPLE Every Day.

Moving through a decade of iconic hits, Beyoncé, 41, performed staples such as "Crazy in Love," "Beautiful Liar" and "Naughty Girl," as well as more recent tunes including "Freedom," "Spirit" and "Be Alive."

The singer wore a set of dazzling looks during the performance, including a yellow custom-made Atelier Zuhra corseted dress, which was topped with a feathered skirt and matching backpiece, when she opened the show performing a cover of Etta James ' "At Last."

Then, the mother of three changed into another custom gown, an all-red Nicolas Jebran ensemble composed of a skin-tight bodysuit that was decorated with gold jewels across her torso and chest. She accessorized the look with a matching, billowing skirt and an intricate headpiece.

Notably missing from Beyoncé's set was any song from Renaissance .

Renaissance , which has been billed as the first of a three-part project , marks Beyoncé's first solo album in six years.

She previously released Dangerously in Love (2003), B'Day (2006), I Am... Sasha Fierce (2008), 4 (2011), Beyoncé (2013) and Lemonade (2016), following her tenure with Destiny's Child . Beyoncé also appeared on the 2018 collaborative album Everything Is Love with husband JAY-Z , as well as 2019's The Lion King: The Gift , a soundtrack for Disney's live-action adaptation that features original music by the artist.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Additionally, she released Homecoming: The Live Album in 2019, recorded from her iconic Coachella performance the year before.

A visual album for Renaissance has been previously teased , but no release date for it yet has been announced.
