Culture and customs.

In addition to its beautiful beaches and flavorful food, the people of Jamaica are an inherent part of the country’s appeal. Their friendly nature, sense of humor and colorful banter are hard to resist. Even Jamaican Patois, a mix of English and African languages, has a charming, almost musical air to it.

As the birthplace of reggae and dancehall, music plays an important role in Jamaican culture. Historically linked to Rastafarianism, reggae was used to express spirituality and bring awareness to social and political injustice. Look no further than Jamaican icon, Bob Marley, who sang of ‘One Love’, to see this relationship at play. Gospel sounds are an integral part of church, while West African folk songs pepper daily life. Hand in hand with music is dancing – energetic and mesmerizing, few can resist swaying to the beat when island ‘riddims’ (rhythm in Patois) are played.

Spirituality is also highly valued in Jamaica. Home to more churches per square mile than any other country, about 65% of the population is Christian, while the rest adhere to Hinduism, Islam, Judaism or various African religions. About one percent of the population follow the Rastafari philosophy, which seeks to recapture and celebrate African heritage. Despite being a small group, followers have left an indelible stamp on the country and their movement has spread to other parts of the world.

Eating and drinking

Many of the flavors and spices found in Jamaican food come from the Spanish, British, African, Indian and Chinese populations who inhabit the island. Taking advantage of the natural bounties at their disposal, Jamaican dishes feature plenty of fish, tropical fruits and produce. While the local cuisine has a reputation for being fiery, those with lower spice thresholds don’t need to worry as there are actually many dishes and snacks that don’t have chili peppers. Meat dishes feature heavily in the local diet – jerk chicken, curry goat and oxtail are some of the more popular dishes – yet many Rastas believe adhering to a vegetarian or vegan diet is an important part of their faith, so a wide array of options for vegetarians is usually available as well.

Nothing is more quintessentially Jamaican than a plate of jerk chicken with rice and peas. Be aware that most Jamaicans eat their meat well done, so proper jerk might be drier than what you’re used to. Side dishes are usually vegetarian and include plantain, a sweet tropical cooking banana that is sliced and deep fried, and callaloo, a staple Caribbean green. Slightly bitter and nutty-tasting, callaloo is often steamed and lightly seasoned with green onions, garlic, thyme and coconut oil.

For a cheap and satisfying snack, nothing beats a vegetarian or spicy beef Jamaican patty. Available everywhere, Jamaican patties are similar to an empanada and get their golden hue from turmeric. Roadside stands selling boiled corn, roasted yams, soups, fried fish, coconut water and various tropical fruits are also easy to find.

In addition to coconut water, skyjuice (shaved ice covered in fruit syrup) is a Jamaican favorite sold by many street vendors. This drink is best avoided, however, as the ice is not always sanitary. Luckily, Jamaica has plenty of other refreshing options to quench your thirst instead, like various types of rum punch or Red Stripe, a local Jamaican beer. If you’re after a java jolt, coffee harvested in Jamaica’s Blue Mountains is full-bodied, exceptionally smooth and among the rarest and most expensive coffee in the world.

Must-try foods in Jamaica

1. curry goat.

A staple across the Caribbean, this slow-cooked savory dish is packed with flavor. Chunks of goat and potato are simmered in curry powder and various other spices until it’s thick and tender.

2. Rice and peas

Rice and peas (which might be pigeon peas, kidney beans or black beans) are simmered in coconut milk, thyme and other spices to create a dish that is simultaneously sweet and savory.

3. Jerk chicken

This quintessential Jamaican dish gets it’s distinct flavor from jerk spice (a mixture of Scotch bonnet peppers, pimento, cinnamon and nutmeg), which is dry-rubbed into the meat. Jerk pork and jerk fish are other variations worth trying.

4. Saltfish and ackee

A popular breakfast choice, the mild and creamy flesh of Jamaica’s national fruit (ackee) is boiled with salt-cured cod (salt fish), tomatoes and various spices to create a dish that is both sweet and salty.

Geography and environment

Jamaica is a tropical island nation located south of Cuba and west of Haiti in the Caribbean Sea. More than 1,000 km (621 miles) of coastline stretch over numerous bays, keys, and islands to produce some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Calm waters give way to white-sand beaches along the northern coast, whereas black-sand beaches can be found in the west. Miles of the well-developed coral reef is located along the north and east coast.

More than just idyllic beaches, much of Jamaica is covered in rugged peaks, some of which are volcanic. The Blue Mountains and Dry Harbour Mountain occupy the eastern half of the country, descending westward into Cockpit Country, a hilly limestone landscape of ridges, caves, and sinkholes.

As an island nation, shopping options aren’t as extensive as you might find elsewhere. Malls are relatively modest in size and most items are imported, making them more expensive than what you might expect. Your best bet while shopping in Jamaica is to look for locally-made goods. Jamaican rum and coffee are both great choices that can be purchased relatively cheaply at any local grocery store. Though Blue Mountain Coffee may seem pricey, it is still a fraction of the price of what you would find outside of the country. Rum distilleries, like Appleton’s and Hampden Estate, are also a good place to both sample and purchase locally-made rums.

Head to craft markets to shop jewelry and handmade wood carvings, though be aware, many of the other goods commonly found in markets are neither handmade or locally-produced. Harbour Street Craft Market in Montego Bay and ‘Cooyah’ Market in Kingston are two of the biggest markets to practice your haggling skills. ‘Cooyah’ Market also stocks a wide array of Rastafarian clothing, which is typically red, green and gold (the colors of the Ethiopian flag). And of course, Bob Marley memorabilia can be found everywhere throughout the country.

Be aware that US dollars are widely accepted, although technically it is illegal for vendors to sell items in foreign currency. Most places give change in Jamaican dollars regardless of the currency you pay with.

Festivals and events in Jamaica

For many Jamaicans, music is an important part of daily life and inextricably intertwined with their culture and identity, so it makes sense that many of their festivals incorporate their musical heritage. Some of the best ones to keep an eye out for are:

Bob Marley Birthday Bash

Every year, the idyllic beach town of Negril celebrates the life of Bob Marley with a multi-day festival featuring authentic Jamaican music, food, and art. Festival dates vary slightly each year but always coincide with the beloved icon’s birthday on February 6th.

Saint Ann Kite Festival

Colorful and elaborate kites fill the sky over Saint Ann’s beach during the day, while concerts take over during the evening for this wholesome, yet entertaining annual March festival.

Reggae Sumfest

Jamaica’s largest music festival takes over Montego Bay every July. Attracting reggae icons, international artists, and energetic crowds for over 20 years, Sumfest just might be ‘greatest reggae show on earth’ like they profess to be.

Jamaica’s Carnival (Bacchanal)

In the months leading up to Easter, the infectious sounds of calypso and soca fill the air as Jamaica comes down with Carnival fever. Concerts, beach parties, street parades and weekly mas camps take place across the country, culminating in a grand parade in Kingston that rivals Rio’s in the spectacle. Featuring costumed revelers, high-energy dancing, pulsating music and a euphoric atmosphere – Carnival is a must for anyone wanting to experience the excitement and bacchanal of a proper Caribbean fete.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Jamaica Cruises Insider

The island has fairly good weather all year long, but it's good to know that the rainy season comes in May and then again from October to November. Jamaica also has a hurricane season that lasts from June 1 to November 30. November and December is a great time to visit: The likelihood of storms is low, and the weather is still warm while it's colder in more northerly climates.

Licensed local taxis are known as "contract carriages" and always display a red license plate. They operate under fixed rates and these can be seen inside the cabs. If you want to save money, opt for route taxis, a service that runs like buses and picks up others along the way. These also have red license plates.

LOCAL CUISINE Spice and Everything Nice

A blend of old and new influences, Jamaican cuisine incorporates the flavors of the indigenous peoples that once inhabited the island and the Europeans that once landed on its shores.

Authentic Jerk Chicken from Jamaica

The Right Kind of Jerk

Jerk chicken is the fragrant, smoky and spicy dish that's arguably Jamaica's culinary claim to fame. This spicy barbecued chicken gets its red-hot flavors from a special rub, usually including Scotch bonnet peppers and sweeter spices like allspice and nutmeg.

Traditional Dish Ackee and Saltfish from Jamaica

AN UNLIKELY PEAR

You might not think of fruit and fish together, but Jamaican cooks have turned this unlikely pairing into a distinctive dish. Ackee and codfish incorporates the fleshy, yellow seeds of the tropical, pear-shaped ackee fruit with salted cod. The result is a light but filling protein-packed dish that's typically served over rice for dinner or with dumplings for breakfast.

Typical Breakfast Fried Bammy Plantains Ackee and Saltfish from Jamaica

Double Bammy

The history of bammy goes way, way back. Originally eaten by Jamaica's indigenous inhabitants, this flatbread is made from the starchy root vegetable cassava. It's then soaked in coconut milk and then fried to perfection. Enjoy them on their own in for breakfast or alongside fish or jerk chicken at lunch or dinner.

What Travelers Say About Their Chile Tours

Explora at Rapa Nui was perfect. Fabulous food. Great service. The hikes were gorgeous and led well. It is really the best way to do this trip as the hikes are not available to others.

I loved the EcoCamp in Patagonia--every evening, you can decide with the help of staff and fellow travelers what you'll be doing the following day, depending on how you're feeling. Every choice of activity level is top-quality. The EcoCamp represents a good balance between sustainable adventure travel and comfort, and the staff succeeds in quickly building a sense of community.

Smooth trip, great guides. Patagonia is obviously one of the most beautiful places on earth. Torres del Paine is almost terrifying in its beauty. The (reasonably) close contact with wildlife/birds is extraordinary.

Patagonia/Torres del Paine was incredible. I was able to enjoy the trip of a lifetime.

Everything was great. Hikes, food, staff, culture.

Accommodations Review

Meals Review

Transportation Review

Traveler Advice

Make sure you know about the form to enter Easter Island. And have it filled out with on phone or print before you depart. Also, if you can afford Explora, it is really the best way to do this trip as the hikes are not available to others. The town was fine but not that interesting, except for Sunday mass which was such a great thing to do.

I loved the EcoCamp in Patagonia--every evening, you can decide with the help of staff and fellow travelers what you'll be doing the following day, depending on how you're feeling.  Every choice of activity level is top-quality. The EcoCamp represents a good balance between sustainable adventure travel and comfort, and the staff succeeds in quickly building a sense of community among visitors and between visitors and its staff--even after just 3 days at camp, I was already saying goodbye to people who already felt like good friends (including, in particular, fabulous guides Franco, Sebastien and Pablo).

Unbelievably top-quality service and amazing food, both at the EcoCamp and on board Quark's Sea Adventurer. In fact, all of us guests spontaneously cheered the chef during one of our EcoCamp dinners, and the service on board the Sea Adventurer was on par with any Michelin-starred restaurant in New York City (where I live). Both venues did an excellent job managing my dietary restrictions (pescatarian).

Franco, Sebastien, and Pablo were simply extraordinary, with a passion for Patagonia and a genuine desire to make every guest's experience extra-special. Franco even dived after my backpack as it was rolling off a cliff; Sebastien made time to get to know each guest over dinner and drinks deep into the evenings; Pablo has an encyclopedic knowledge of local flora and fauna that turned every day trek into an unforgettable experience.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Andrew was great at providing advanced reading materials, packing lists, and answering all manner of pre-trip questions quickly and accurately. He had great advice and I consider Andrew to be primarily responsible for ensuring that this 2-in-1 trip combo worked so beautifully.

Bring twice as much camera film as you think you'll need. Prepare to be stunned by your fabulous surroundings.

Smooth trip, great guides. Patagonia is obviously one of the most beautiful places on earth. The boat trip to across the glacier lake and up to the glaciers (the second day of our safari) is exciting, reasonably safe, and breathtakingly beautiful. Torres del Paine is almost terrifying in its beauty. The (reasonably) close contact with wildlife/birds is extraordinary.

The Hotel Orly is excellent. EcoCamp is a bit rough (even in the "suites") but that is to be expected. This would not pull down our rating from excellent.

Plainly, the chef at EcoCamp takes great pride in his or her work.

Our guides in Santiago were extraordinary. The first day of our safari was beyond our physical abilities, but our guide had assured us that it would not be. Your materials had made the difficulty fairly clear, and we had decided to take the "easy" routes, but there was fairly strong pressure from our guides (and others in our group) to do this "hard" trek on our first day, when we really had no reference point to know how hard "hard" would be. We (now) understand that "trekking" is serious exercise, but that was not explained to us (I think everyone just assumed that we knew what "trekking" means; but for folks over 50, that is a relatively new concept of which many of us are not really aware). Otherwise, the rest of the safari was absolutely fabulous! (We went "easy" after that first day!) Claudio was an outstanding guide on our third day.

Clothing requirements for EcoCamp could have been clearer due to the stark changes from cold to hot (and vice versa), even within a few hours. Transportation was very smooth.

This was a trip of a lifetime (particularly because we tacked it onto the a cruise around Cape Horn, which is equally wonderful). But we are being candid about the problems mentioned above simply to offer what we hope is constructive criticism to help you improve a truly wonderful adventure even more for folks like us.

Itinerary Review

Amazing trip. I normally do a lot of research and planning but since Arielle helped to identify amazing options with a lot of structure baked into the itinerary, I was able to just tell my buddy we could show up and figure things out for the day. It reduced a lot of the typical planning burden.

Explora guides were knowledgeable and engaging. They did a better job to speak a combination of English and Spanish than guides on other parts of our trip.

I really appreciate AdventureSmith/Arielle with all the suggestions and support.

Jamaica Birding Tour: Island Endemics in the Heart of the Caribbean March 2025/2026

Birding Ecotours invites you to explore the island nation of Jamaica, an extraordinary country in the heart of the Caribbean Sea. Jamaica is famous for its beautiful tropical shores lined with coral reefs, beach resorts, Rastafarian culture, reggae music, Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, and early James Bond adventures. Importantly for us, this island is also home to 30 endemic bird species, along with a good number of Caribbean specials shared only with neighboring islands in the Greater Antilles .

Jamaica birding tour

Being the third-largest island in the Caribbean, Jamaica hosts a wide array of habitats. On this tour we will explore various forested mountain ranges, lush lowland coastal bush, coastal shores, and several wetlands, giving us what are sure to be some of the finest birding experiences in the Caribbean. Our week-long tour will give you a realistic chance of seeing all of Jamaica’s bird endemics. These include the gorgeous Red-billed Streamertail ( known locally as the doctor bird ), Jamaican Mango , Crested Quail-Dove , Jamaican Tody , Jamaican Owl and Jamaican Blackbird . We hope to find all these, along with many other regional specialties, in a comfortable time frame without rushing the trip. We will also make a special effort to look for the beautiful White-tailed Tropicbird while on the island.

Jamaica birding tour

This tour begins with some birding around the capital city, Kingston, before we head into the heights of the spectacular Blue Mountains National Park, then on to Portland Parish, our base to explore the John Crow Mountains National Park . We have chosen lodges giving the best access to the birding sites, when possible with good birds within their grounds. With ample time to explore the diverse Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park and Ecclesdown Road , this tour is perfect for a great week of birding, targeting all of Jamaica’s endemic bird species.

This trip can easily be combined with our Cuba: Endemics and Culture in Paradise tour and our Complete Dominican Republic tour for a comprehensive birding experience in the Caribbean.

Itinerary (7 days/6 nights)

Day 1. arrival in jamaica.

Today is a travel day and you can arrive at your leisure in Kingston, Jamaica (though, we suggest arriving before 2 pm to be able to join us for some local birding). After a short transfer from Norman Manley International Airport, we check in at our comfortable hotel in Kingston. If time permits, we will visit one of the city parks to start getting familiar with Caribbean birds. This will act as a great introduction to birding in Jamaica, and we hope to start seeing our first endemics of the tour, such as Yellow-billed Amazon , White-chinned Thrush , and Jamaican Woodpecker .

Overnight: Terra Nova All Suite Hotel or similar

Day 2. Birding Kingston and the Hellshire Hills

We first travel to the arid Hellshire Hills to the south-west of Kingston, an area which is more reminiscent of an African savanna than of a Caribbean coastline. The coastal scrub-woodlands are productive for Jamaica’s dry-forest species. Our principal target will be Bahama Mockingbird , a very localized species in Jamaica, found only here and in adjacent Clarendon Parish. Our other major targets will be the endemic Jamaican Vireo and near-endemic Stolid Flycatcher , which, while present throughout the island, are more common in arid woodlands. Here we have a good chance of encountering the stunning endemic hummingbird, Jamaican Mango , alongside the tiny Vervain Hummingbird as it darts between flower patches – although only a mere inch larger than the world’s smallest bird (and close relative, the Bee Hummingbird) this species makes up for its size with a lot of character!

Leaving Hellshire Hills we visit wetlands along the western edge of Kingston where we should see a range of waterbirds such as Northern Jacana , Purple Gallinule , Least Grebe , and Black-necked Stilt , alongside waders and heron species, with Least Bittern , and Tricolored Heron perhaps the most notable. The grassland and scrub surrounding these wetlands are frequented by comical parties of Smooth-billed Ani , small groups of Saffron Finch , and wintering neotropical warblers, while groups of Cave Swallow swirl overhead.

We eventually depart for the Blue Mountains National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site , where we have a two-night stay nestled within montane forests of the Silver Hill Gap where we seek Jamaica’s rarest birds.

Overnight: Starlight Chalet.  This is basic accommodation but is in the best position for birding.

Day 3. Birding the Blue Mountains National Park

At almost 4,000 feet (1,220 meters) above sea level, the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park is classified as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International and host the rarest of Jamaica’s endemics. Today we’ll focus on birding the Hardwar Gap , Silver Hills Gap, and Cascade Falls, these sites all merge seamlessly into each other along a rugged mountain road on the cool western slopes of the Blue Mountains National Park.

Our lodge is well situated, nestled high in the Silver Hill Gap, and with an early departure we will be in prime position to find the secretive Crested Quail-dove , which is often seen waddling along the forested edges of the road in the early morning. We will visit the Hardwar gap area early as it is perfect for Rufous-throated Solitaire – a gorgeous bird we will try to find by following its haunting whistles. Out on the trails and along the mountain road, we will search for the unobtrusive Jamaican Elaenia and Greater Antillean Bullfinch , and the region’s namesake, the Blue Mountain Vireo . The vireo is very localized, being found only here and in Cockpit Country, and is a secretive species, often creeping quietly through dense vegetation, but it is common enough in the right habitat. One of the most exciting prospects of birding these high-elevation forests, however, is the chance of encountering a mixed species flock, with Jamaican Becard , Jamaican Spindalis , and Arrowhead Warbler sometimes present in these. The unusual Jamaican Blackbird may associate with these flocks too, and hopefully we will see them foraging in epiphytes and tree ferns. Another section is ideal for finding small parties of White-eyed Thrush and is, importantly, one of the best places for Greater Antillean Elaenia . At this time of year, the species will be returning to high-elevation forests in preparation to breed, but pairs will often join mixed species flocks.

Although we’ll be targeting the more localized species, 28 of the 30 Jamaican endemics have been recorded within the Blue Mountains National Park, and many migrants winter here so birding can be very productive. We will relax at the lodge when the birding quietens down but have the option to bird again in the afternoon once things start moving again, either visiting the lodge trails or picking another local site depending on our targets.

Overnight: Starlight Chalet. This is basic accommodation but is in the best position for birding.

Jamaica birding tour

Day 4. Birding the Blue and John Crow Mountains and transfer to Port Antonio

As with all great birdwatching in the Caribbean, ours will be at a relaxed pace and today we plan to bird the grounds and nearby trails of Starlight Chalet. We will take time to enjoy good views of many of the Jamaican endemics which are in abundance here, including one of the world’s most iconic species, Red-billed Streamertail – as males jostle over flowers in the garden and chase one another, displaying their gorgeous tail streamers. The gardens and surrounding forests host colorful and exotic endemics such as Jamaican Oriole , Jamaican Woodpecker , Jamaican Euphonia , Orangequit , and the unobtrusive but incredibly beautiful Jamaican Tody . We hope to find the bird known locally as the ‘Old Man Bird’ – Chestnut-bellied Cuckoo , which is surprisingly nimble despite its size. We will have a good chance of finding many of Jamaica’s endemic tyrant flycatchers too, with Jamaican Pewee , Sad Flycatcher and Rufous-tailed Flycatcher all seen regularly.

After an exciting morning, we will descend from the mountains and transfer to Port Antonio in the north-east of the island, to relax at our hotel for the afternoon. Here, Black-billed Streamertail replace their red-billed counterparts and on arrival at the Hotel Mockingbird, we should be greeted by these gorgeous hummingbirds as they squabble over the feeders. Jamaican Mango is also usually in attendance, and while it’s likely we would have encountered this species previously, here we can enjoy prolonged views of these lovely and surprisingly timid birds. The hotel is situated near good quality lowland forest, which is especially productive for the globally threatened Ring-tailed Pigeon , which is satisfyingly abundant here, and busy flocks often pass overhead.

After eating some of the best Jamaican food, we will look for one of the less common endemics, the Jamaican Owl , which is resident within the grounds and often picked out by its hoarse, far-carrying calls. We will also look for the local subspecies of  American Barn Owl , and Northern Potoo , which can often be found right outside the hotel.

Overnight: Hotel Mockingbird Hill

Jamaica birding tour

Day 5. Birding the Ecclesdown Road

Today we will have an early departure from our eco-lodge as we head to the far east of the island, to explore Ecclesdown Road . This is one of the country’s best-known birding sites: an overgrown and seldom-used road that travels along the foothills of the John Crow Mountains for approximately eleven miles (18 kilometers). Ecclesdown Road winds through a mix of secondary closed and open forests as well as small patches of scrub, cultivation, and plantation, which together create a very productive area to bird. We will spend a long morning slowly birding along this flat road, making our way back to our lodge in the afternoon. This promises to be an exciting morning, as here we have chances at finding most of Jamaica’s endemics along with many other specials, and we will devote our time to the species we still need. Our main targets are likely to be Black-billed Amazon , which appear to be more numerous than Yellow-billed Amazon here, and Yellow-shouldered Grassquit , as small groups forage along the roadside and forest-scrub edge. Ecclesdown Road is also good for Jamaican Crow , which, despite uninspiring plumage, has remarkable vocalizations comprised of mechanical gurgles, clucks, pops, and jabbering. Other species of interest include the Jamaican subspecies of the raucous Olive-throated Parakeet , Ring-tailed Pigeon , Crested Quail-Dove , Jamaican Blackbird and Black-billed Streamertail .

Once we have had our fill of Eccelsdown, we will start heading back to our eco-lodge, but we’ll check for impressive White-tailed Tropicbird and Magnificent Frigatebird which can be seen just offshore. We can also check for wintering Belted Kingfisher , which fishes from the beaches and mangroves. Returning in good time, we will have the afternoon at leisure, to either enjoy birding the hotel veranda and gardens, or visit the beautiful Frenchman’s Creek.

Jamaica birding tour

Day 6.  Birding Portland Parish

Our sixth day in Jamaica will be flexible and we have a wide variety of options available to us. Should we have missed any notable birds on the Ecclesdown Road, or indeed within the Blue Mountains, we will undertake a trip into these areas to try once more. Alternatively, there are productive sites close to our eco-lodge which we may choose to explore instead, particularly if we have yet to encounter the cautious Jamaican Lizard Cuckoo , or ‘Old Lady Bird’ as it’s known locally, as the dense forests near Frenchman’s cove and San-San beach are a familiar haunt for this uncommon endemic. These coastal forests can be an exciting prospect to bird as they are a hotspot for neotropical migrants, so we’ll have a chance of seeing some less commonly encountered species in Jamaica, such as Worm-eating Warbler , and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker . However, given that most of Jamaica’s endemics have been recorded within the grounds of our eco-lodge, we may opt to bird from the comfort of the lodge. Time here will be put to good use with many excellent birds possible, and it will allow photographic opportunities for spectacular Black-billed Streamertail or Jamaican Mango . Should it be of interest, we can help arrange a trip to experience one of the natural beauty spots which Jamaica is renowned for (please note this may require additional costs).

Jamaica birding tour

Day 7. Departure from Kingston

Following a spectacular week, this tour will conclude after breakfast when we will transfer back to Kingston where the tour will end. If time allows, we may drop into one of the coastal wetlands for some final Jamaican birding before departing, particularly if West Indian Whistling Duck or American Flamingo have been reported in the area. Please note, we ask if you can try to book afternoon or evening flights out of Kingston to allow for necessary travel time (at least three hours to the airport) and flight check-in formalities.

Don’t forget to check out our Cuba: Great Caribbean Birding and Endemics tour and Complete Dominican Republic tour to extend your amazing Caribbean birding experience!

Please note that the itinerary cannot be guaranteed as it is only a rough guide and can be changed (usually slightly) due to factors such as availability of accommodation, updated information on the state of accommodation, roads, or birding sites, the discretion of the guides and other factors. In addition, we sometimes have to use a different international guide from the one advertised due to tour scheduling.

The 9 Best Chile Tours For Unforgettable Adventures That Are Achievable & Affordable!

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights. His full bio can be found here.

Wines come to mind when Chile comes up in travel conversations and for good reason. This South American country has been producing wines for almost 500 years, thanks to Spanish communion wines that first planted the idea.

Today, Chile is home to some of the best coastal mountain grapes, such as those grown in Maipo Valley, and cool climate varietals, such as those grown in Casablanca. Beyond the more familiar red wines, Chile is distinctively known for its Pinot Noir and Syrah – the former flourishing in Chile, the latter a rising star.

What a convenience these wine-growing regions are within easy reach of the well-worn Santiago de Chile-Valparaiso tourist circuit that takes visitors from the capital to coast in comfortable day trips, with enough time to do a vineyard tour and wine tasting in between. Fortunately, typical group tours in Chile that take this capital-to-coast route make it a point to stop somewhere along the way and indulge everyone’s taste buds.

For those keen on history, the central coast is a must-see. Before the construction of the Panama Canal that made navigating between the Atlantic and the Pacific much shorter, Valparaiso was an important resupply stop for ships coming up from the Straits of Magellan. All that history is contained in the old quarter that UNESCO deemed important to preserve.

Away from the central coast, there’s much to see in this long, thin strip of land sandwiched between the Andes and the Pacific. The barren and seemingly alien landscape of the arid Atacama Desert to the north, and the ice-sculpted landscape, horned peaks and blue-tinted glaciers of Patagonia to the south beckon.

Both have their intrepid-minded fan base, and both offer an opportunity to escape the crowd that often converges where crisp white wines are served.

The logistics of pulling off such an expedition through the icy Patagonian wilderness and the battered sand and rock of the Atacama would be mind-bending, though, to say nothing of prohibitive.

These days, however, organized group tours make even shorter treks into these desolate lands possible and light on the pocket. And if you want to add a jaunt into another country – and even in that tiny island floating in the vast South Pacific – group tours offering multi-country trips are easily arranged from within Chile.

Leave the travel planning to the experts, and before you know it, you’re face to face with a massive stone statue that defies notions of transport. If the ancient islanders knew how to get them from A to B, then modern tour operators shouldn’t have any problem getting you from the north of Chile to the south, notwithstanding the 2,700-mile distance.

Where to begin? Start with a bite-sized trip into the country, and add more tours as you go along.
