Montenegro - A perfect destination for your hiking and trekking adventure

Choose the perfect location to overcome natural as well as personal obstacles! There are hiking and trekking routes for everyone, from easy to extremely demanding, whether you want an easy one-hour walk or to head "off the beaten track" for days. Whatever your preferences and skill level may be, Montenegro is sure to have a thrilling hike for you!

Camp in Lukavica Atanackovic Montenegro

Montenegro's most famous hiking trails

Some prestigious hiking spots include the Kotor walls and the Sveti Ivan fortress, which offers a famous view of the Bay of Kotor, Ivan's river bed and Njegoš's mausoleum on Lovčen, Savin Kuk on Durmitor and Crno Jezero (Black Lake.) If you are looking for something a little more secluded, take a walk through the almost surreal valley of Lukavica to Kapetanov Lake, then pass the Mrtvica Canyon and the Gate of Wishes. You can also visit the heart-shaped Trnovačko Lake, and Orjen on a full moon night.

Hiking Orjen Montenegro

Mountaineering transversals are ideal for your hiking tour: PPT "Orjen - Lovćen - Rumija" and CT-1 "Planinama Crne Gore " are part of the national network of extensive groomed trails.

The Montenegrin Alps - the mountain massif of Prokletije, where the challenging trail "Peaks of the Balkans" awaits you, as well as the world-famous mountaineering and hiking route "Via Dinarica" - White Trail - will challenge you to conquer both heights and your own fears during your adventure.

Hiking is best from mid-April to the end of October along the coast, and from June to the end of October in the mountain massifs of Magli, Durmitor, Komovi, Visitor, Hajla, and Prokletije.

Hiking on snowshoes or touring skis (from December to March)

Hiking at night using flashlights near the ski centers on Bjelasica adds to the thrill. Renting equipment is possible at a local tourist organization or at ski resorts.

Which mountains are the most popular for trekking?

Bjelasica and Sinjajevina stand out among Montenegrin trekking destinations. They are suitable for all ages and should be visited between May and the end of October for traditional trekking. They are also ideal for snowshoeing and ski touring in the winter. If your Montenegro journey happens in the winter, these breathtaking mountains may be the perfect spots for you!

Durmitor Trekking Adventure

Durmitor National Park is best visited during the months of July, August, and September. Trekking takes place primarily in the vicinity of Žabljak and on the National Park's lakes.

We recommend the "Durmitor Ring" and the Ćurevac viewpoint for trekking and panoramic tours. These routes necessitate substantial physical fitness and stamina, as well as hiking in organized groups rather than solo.

Durmitor hiking Montenegro

Explore Prokletije

If you want to explore Prokletije, you can begin in the quiet town Plav, where most tours begin. Summer is the best time to go trekking, but even then, you might have a surprise run-in with some snow! Easy hiking trails can be found in Grebaja, near Gusinje, Plavsko Lake, and on the stretch from Babino Polje to Hridsko Lake.

The nature of Prokletije in the Plav and Gusinje municipalities will delight you with all of its options. Which of the 77 peaks with elevations greater than 2,000 meters above sea level will you choose? Or perhaps one of the three peaks that rise more than 2500 meters above sea level? It's up to you to choose.

Durmitor and Prokletije trekking tours are among the most demanding. The group tour organizers provide overnight stays, licensed guides, transportation during the arrangement, free parking, and a recording of the adventure. Fill your backpack with memories and enjoy a trekking adventure in Montenegro!

Treking avanture Prokletije Ropojana Montenegro

Going to the mountain in organized groups with a certified and licensed mountain guide is the safest option!

A list of certified and licensed mountain guides can be found on the Mountaineering Association of Montenegro's website. Hiking and trekking require adequate equipment, including proper footwear, layered clothing, quality mountaineering equipment, and personal documents. You can learn more information about guides and necessary equipment from mountaineering clubs, hike hosts and guides, national park information centers, and local tourist organizations.

Avoid going on tours by yourself. Remember, you use the trails at your own risk.

What the Trip is Like

This trip is rated Level 3, Moderate , according to our trip grading system. It is a hiking journey with day hikes of four to six hours on most days over moderate to steep mountain terrain. The hiking itinerary is planned as we have described it in the preceding pages. However, as in any mountain trip, we will remain flexible with regard to weather and other local conditions in choosing our routes. And do remember that apart from the coastal areas, the tourism infrastructure in Montenegro is still in development and the services, facilities, and quality of hiking trails can be basic.

Although we are not at altitude, the trails can be rocky and narrow, and there is a lot of limestone, which can get slippery when wet. You will carry just a daypack on the hikes. Hiking boots that go above the ankle are recommended for the extra support, as well as hiking poles.

Rooms in the hotels and inns we stay in are not always of uniform or international size. However, our leaders try their best to assign rooms in a fair way so that all participants experience an equal advantage throughout the trip as a whole. Please note that single rooms in European hotels tend to be small by US standards. Please note that in Europe, the dinner hour is considerably later than what it is in the US. We do our best to secure early reservations for our groups, but most often the evening meal will be at 7:30 pm.

The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. Žabljak – Hike through the bear circle – Žabljak This morning after breakfast we take a path that leads past the Black Lake and then into the mountains and through a changing landscape of fir forests and low alpine vegetation to the snow-capped peaks. While bears and wolves are seldom seen in the park, there is a chance to spot chamois, foxes, weasels and badgers on the high mountain slopes. The area is also rich in birds. 130 different species are registered here, including gray mountain eagles, bald vultures and crossbills. From spring to midsummer, the landscape becomes a blaze of color. The alpine meadows are covered with a rainbow of gentians, anemones, violets, soldanelles and wild strawberries. 10 hiking tours (trails) in Montenegro

Montenegro in short is a Disneyland for hiking and nature lovers. A lot of popular hiking trails such as Via Dinarica, Peaks of Balkan, 5 National parks with a lot of hiking and goat paths, Circuit around Kucka Korita, Mountain lakes tours, Mrtvica canyon trail, abandoned villages .. We are organizing a once in a week hiking tour depending on weather conditions and time in a year. This is a really unique experience for everyone who would like to taste “Wild beauty of Montenegro”. Today we will write short about 10 hiking tours in Montenegro that we recommend.

Mrtvica Canyon trail (tour)

Starting of this trail is now from this point Starting point to Mrtvica canyon

https://maps.app.goo.gl/ueT4DsNuM4HE2XMdA . If you are checking on some older trail information , starting may lead you from Camp Vesko. But the 2020 bridge over the river was knocked down because of a strong winter that year. All trails are marked so there is no possibility of missing a road. Most beautiful place is the Gate of Wishes , where you should think of a wish from your heart. Fairy from the mountain will make sure your wish comes true. We usually finish our tour on one beach after 9 km walking. But you can stop any time and return back with the same road. This tour of hiking in Mrtvica Canyon we have on offer on Viator , but you can call us directly.

Hiking trail (tour) to Vasojevicki kom

If you go or stay in Kolasin, on a road to Matesvo after 1 hour driving you will see Vasojevicki kom. You have a road to the beginning of trail. Also from here you can go to Kucki kom as well, elevation is 500 m and you need around 2 hours and half hiking. We recommend this tour in dry weather, because if you go in the raining period it is very slippery. However it is an amazing view and on the button you can stay in some of ethno villages.

Kucki kom hiking in Montenegro

National Park Durmitor Hiking

Our most popular National park in the North of the country. We recommend Bobotov kuku , the highest peak in this park and Montenegro and Prutas “king of views”. But only If you are in good shape for both peaks, otherwise we recommend you walk to Jablan lake. Of course always in the summer or late September , but when there is no snow. So, Bobotov kuk is best to start from Sedlo. It is very easy to find it and during all trails you have markation . Last 200 m is a little bit dangerous, auxiliary ropes are in operation. View over the Skrcka lake is gorgeous but be careful please. Hiking in Durmitor National park is a little bit tricky since the terrain we walk on is a small stone, sipar, very slippery. So always check the weather forecast before going since elevation is 900m and around 7 hours walking duration.

Prutas peak you can reach from https://www.summitpost.org/pruta/154418 , amazing view on Bobotov kuk and places around Durmitor National park. This hiking is moderate around 600 m elevation with 5 hours duration hiking. Few places from starting a route . If you are starting a trail from Zabljak we recommend you to go by this road to Plužine. It is an amazing landscape.

Pluzine, Pivsko lake

Prokletije Hiking

This is our favorite park for hiking in Montenegro. But most people always ask for Durmitor National park, well it is better marketing for sure. After all, all our Natural parks are beautiful.

We will write three hiking trails : Talijanka, Popadija , Volusnica around 7 hours hiking Karaula hiking, around 6 hours and Hridsko lake around 4 hours hiking trail . First two hiking starting from valley Grebaje. This tour also can be done from Podgorica. Good thing is that we have a new border with Albania which make one of this tours possible in one day. All this trails are as well part of Peaks of Balkan.

The other beautiful hiking would be to Hridsko lake . Elevation only 500 m very easy. After few hours you will reach this beautiful lake where fairies used to swim by one local legend.

Prokletije, Pekas of Balkan, Hiking iin Montenegro

*It is very important for hiking tours to have experience tour guide, if you need help to find one don’t hesitate to ask.

Day 1 – Arrival

Day 2 – Hiking the Prokletije

This 3-peak trail starts from the achingly pretty valley of Grebaje in the Prokljetije National Park and forms part of the mega hiking trail ‘Via Dinarica’. After a steady two-hour ascent through shaded pine forests, our path leads us out into a rolling jumble of alpine meadows and streams that lead, gradually, up to a circular ridge of staggering beauty. The views here are extraordinary onto dramatic karst cliffs as we continue on a rambling loop around the Karanfil and Volušnica peaks, at one stage straddling the very border of Montenegro and Albania. We return to the forest path with which we began the hike. Overnight in Grebaje . Hiking distance: 10km. Grade: moderate.

hiking tour montenegro

The Komovi Mountains are three spectacular high, rough and rocky peaks (all above 2,400 metres of altitude) surrounded by green forests and valleys, perfect for all nature and outdoor lovers, and Montenegro’s sixth National Park!

Our path starts from Štavna Eco Village with a kilometre of mostly flat dirt road, and then the rocky trail climbs, revealing more and more stunning surroundings. There are several steep sections over rocky moraines (watch your step!), before the final approach to the peak of Vasojevički Kom looms into view. From the trail, this sheer wall of vertical rock looks utterly impregnable, but don’t worry!

On the other side of this cliff race is a sweeping, gentle meadow, which allows you to access the peak via a breathtaking ridge behind the mountain. Here, you’ll be treated to astonishing views of the surrounding area – Prokletije, Bjelasica, Sinjajevina, and Durmitor, as well as lots of far-off peaks in Albania and Kosovo. Overnight in Kolašin. Hiking distance: 9km. Grade: moderate/challenging.

Day 4 – Bjelasica Mountain

After two days in the rocky mountains, we’ll jump to a different landscape and national park called ‘Biogradska Gora’. Bjelasica Mountain, a more gentle challenge, will welcome us with its rolling hillsides, lush green pastures, beautiful valleys, stunning lakes, and fields of blueberry bushes and mountain flowers.

Our trail begins at Troglava restaurant, taking a macadam road through the forest and passing shepherd katun huts to reach Troglava peak (2,035m) and stunning views of Pešić Lake and Crna Glava peak. From here, we continue to Zekova Glava peak (2,089m), before descending to the shimmering lake waters to enjoy the maple trees, meadows and possibly a swim. Rested, we circle the lake on foot and return via Zekova Glava. Overnight in Kolašin. Hiking distance: 15km. Grade: easy/moderate.

Day 5 – Rest Day

After three consecutive days of hiking, today is a chance to relax and do your own thing. Waking up in charming Kolašin, the city’s sights are on your doorsteps, such as its cultural centre and St. Demetrius Church. Take a walk around town or grab a taxi to the Dulovina Botanical Garden or Lake Biograd.

If you’re feeling tired, then a lie-in, a good book and later, a short walk into town for a nice meal is a great option. Ask your tour leader for restaurant recommendations. Overnight in Kolašin.

Day 6 – Lola Mountain

Tucked away in the middle of the central Montenegrin highlands, far from main roads, is the hidden treasure of Lola Mountain. This is a place which provides absolute peace for the few who come to enjoy it. Not even many Montenegrins have been here! Lola is special; its broad plateau is covered by grass and decorated by gorgeous peaks rising above 2,000 metres. Abundant pastureland has always attracted people from the lowlands to spend their summers here, providing a perfect feast for their herds .

Our hike today is up Veliki Zebalac peak (2,129m), which we can extend to include the connected peaks of Mali Zebalac (2,073m) and Borova Brda (2,006m) for added challenge. There are no technical aspects to the trail, just peace, tranquillity, fairy-tale shepherd huts and wildflowers galore. Overnight at Ethno Village Nevidio or similar. Hiking distance: 14km. Grade: easy/moderate.

Day 7 – Durmitor Mountain Our final hike is reserved for something really special – Durmitor National Park. UNESCO-protected for its exceptional landscapes, this national park boasts an impressive number of peaks above 2,000 metres – 48 to be exact, but it’s not all about the mountain tops. There are also 18 stunning glacial lakes, known as ‘mountain eyes’ – and today we’ll catch a birds-eye view of two of them as we climb to the peak of Prutaš (2, 394m). Made from colourful vertical layers of karst rock soaring from the ground, many local climbers regard this peak as the most special and beautiful of the whole Durmitor massif . T oday’s climb is challenging at times, with some steep sections, but the summit can be reached without any specialist equipment. Spellbinding panoramic views are the reward for aching thighs! We enjoy the last dinner together and celebratory drinks for a thrilling week. Overnight at Ethno Village Nevidio or similar. Hiking distance: 10km. Grade: moderate/challenging.

Day 8 – Return to Podgorica

Other destinations incur an extra transfer charge.

Please note that the exact hikes on this itinerary may change depending on weather conditions or the decision of the tour leader.

Prices include all accommodation in 3-star local apartments, transfers, meals and guided excursions. Airport transfers excluded unless from Podgorica.

This is a group holiday that can also be tailor-made on request. Maximum Group size of 8.

Our journey begins at the border with Albania, at the giant limestone cliffs of the Prokletije Mountains. This untouched and special place offers complete peace and quiet, and a chance to fully immerse yourself in nature and experience dizzying heights and scenery similar to the Dolomites. We’ll then ascend above the clouds in the Komovi Mountains, and move on to the central mountains, where we’ll enjoy the lush slopes, grassy pastures, and virgin forest at Mount Lola and Bjelasica, part of Biogradska Gora National Park.

As we hike to the top of each new peak, we’ll be rewarded with amazing views of Montenegro. These mountains are spread out, but you’ll still be able to see your next destination from each summit. It’s the perfect way to appreciate Montenegro from all angles. Along the way, we’ll also have the opportunity to learn about local traditions and the rich history and legends of Montenegro, enjoy fresh local cuisine, and visit churches and monasteries.

We’ll be staying in three different locations – Grebaje, Kolašin, and Pošćenje – in simple, comfortable family-run accommodations that offer warm hospitality and a chance to experience the rich rural culture. You’ll leave with a real sense of why this compact country is so special.”

Montenegro is bordered by Croatia to the north, Bosnia & Herzegovina to the northeast, Serbia to the east and Albania to the south. It was only in 2006 that this small country became independent again. The courage and indomitable spirit of the Montenegrins is only matched by their warmth, hospitality and infectious pride.

The tiny country of Montenegro is incredibly diverse for its size. Infact due to its concertina of mountains, some reaching as high as 2,522m, the surface area of the country is larger than you might expect! The climate varies from Mediterranean on the coast, to alpine conditions in the mountainous north. Our Montenegro walking holidays have been organised to depart during the the spring and autumn; these months are particularly good for walking in the National Parks, of which there are five, making up 10% of the country. According to conservation reports, it is possible to find bears, wolves, lynx and jackals in the wilder parts of the country.

Most tourists spend time in the Venetian-era coastal towns of Kotor and Budva, where there are attractive stone buildings, family-run restaurants, a wide choice of hotels and nightlife. Of the 277km Adriatic coastline, 73km are beach, and the mild Mediterranean climate means that bathing, diving, sailing and watersports are popular. Skadar Lake, 40km inland, is the largest lake in the Balkans, and is rich in flora and fauna, making it a paradise for ornithologists and fishermen.

We offer three superb walking and trekking holidays in Montenegro and neighbouring Albania and Kosovo. Our moderate graded walking holiday Montenegro Lakes & Mountains explores the spectacular coastline, primeval forests and plunging gorges of Montenegro. Whilst our Accursed Mountains Trek criss-crosses the mountain borders on foot, amidst the stunning alpine scenery and ancient trails of this beautiful and little-known corner of Europe.

When is the best time to travel to Montenegro?

hiking tour montenegro

Our climate charts will give you an idea of the weather conditions in Montenegro.

During the mid summer, accommodation can be booked up and more expensive. Thunderstorms are common in summer. The best time to visit Montenegro is in the spring and the autumn, particularly if you wish to walk or trek, as the temperatures will be slightly cooler, and it should be less busy. The coast is best visited in May, June and September. The mountainous interior region is generally cooler than on the coast. Temperatures fall in winter, with national parks transforming in to ski resorts.

If you can't make the dates of our group departures, then take a private departure on dates to suit you, or we can create a Tailor Made holiday to Montenegro, especially for you and your family or friends.
