Tampa Cruise Terminals

Bustling with a dynamic cruising business, Port Tampa Bay is considered to have the most convenient cruise terminals in Florida. The port serves 3 terminals serviced with ample parking and valet services. These terminals include Terminal 2, Terminal 3, and Terminal 6.

You can choose to park at Carpark, Tampa Bay’s official parking spot, or use an off-site park that comes with a free shuttle service for your movement to the terminals.

Additionally, each cruise terminal serves specified cruise lines to enhance efficiency and convenience.

1. Terminal 2

Terminal 2 houses ships from the Carnival Cruise Line . It is distinctively situated adjacent to the port’s Carpark garage, making the terminal an easy drop-off option. The terminal sits at 651 Channelside Drive towards the southern end of the port’s complex.

2. Terminal 3

Like Terminal 2, Port Tampa Bay’s Terminal 3 is located directly opposite the car park. Cruising ships from the Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines dock at this terminal. Its long berths make Terminal 3 an ideal spot for larger ships. The terminal sits at 815 Channelside Drive .

3. Terminal 6

Terminal 6 sits at 1333 McKay Street , making it the fastest access point from downtown. The terminal was initially used to dock ships from Holland America Cruise Line . With this cruise line exiting its operations from Port Tampa Bay, Terminal 3 houses ships from multiple cruise lines as scheduled.

Getting to Tampa Cruise Port

There are different ways to access the Tampa Port Cruise Terminals, depending on your means of transport. Here is a quick guide.

If you drive along Interstate 75 from the South, use I-75 North and head to Crosstown Expressway through Exit 50. Take the Adamo Drive by turning right through Exit 9. The Channelside Drive is on the left, connecting you to Port Tampa Bay terminals.

If driving along Interstate 4, use I-4 West and head to 21st Street through Exit 1. Take the Adamo Drive by turning right. The Channelside Drive is on the left, connecting you to Port Tampa Bay terminals.

If you drive from the airport or anywhere along I-275, follow the road to where it connects with I-4 East. Take Exit 1 along I-4 East to join 21st Street. Take the Adamo Drive by the right, then take a left to link up with the Channelside Drive.

Tampa Port is approximately 10 miles from the International Airport of Tampa . If you have no arrangements to drive yourself from the airport, shuttles are booked to facilitate direct transfers for specified cruise lines. Note that transfer shuttles are only available on the day your cruising line is docking out.

Alternatively, you can take an airport rideshare service or taxi readily available to drop travelers to the Port Tampa Bay Terminals. Typically, taxi services operate with a predetermined flat rate of $30. Commuting from the airport through Interstate-275 takes about 20 minutes.

Another option is taking a private door to door transfer . A private airport transfer takes you comfortably from the airport to your hotel/cruise port or vica verca. No hassle of waiting in a long line of taxis or shared shuttles. Your driver will wait for you at the agreed time.

3. By Public Transport

If you are looking to get to Tampa Cruise Port by public means, the TECO Line Streetcar system makes a reliable transit option. This free electric trolley runs through Ybor City from Tampa’s downtown to Channelside Drive, where Tampa Port is situated.

TECO Streetcar systems make a good choice for individuals who are conversant with the area. This is because users get to board the trolley from specific stations located across the route.

4. By Train

Amtrak’s trains are a major means of transport across Florida. The Amtrak station is situated half a mile from Cruise Terminal 6 and 1 mile from Tampa Port. You might need to plan your itinerary earlier as there is only one train that drops travelers to Tampa – the Silver Star Train.

Amtrak’s Auto Train is also reliable for movements to and from Washington DC or Sanford to Tampa Port.

5. Digital Taxis

This is the official parking spot of Tampa Bay Cruise Port. The parking lot is adjacent to Terminal 6 and across Terminals 2 and 3. The Carpark is also serviced with valets that pick up and drop your car at your cruise line, relieving you of the unnecessary parking hassle.

It will cost you $15 to have your car at Carpark for 24 hours, with an additional valet fee of $20. However, the park offers a free service to people with disabilities.

Payments for car parking and valet services can be made before or on your cruising day. Tampa Port features a payment function on its website (tampaport.com) to facilitate pre-payments. With an advance payment, your parking slot is booked, and a valet is allocated to your car.

2. Outdoor Parks

Outdoor parks are independent slots owned and run by private companies. The parking lots are located along Channelside Drive, within Tampa Bay’s terminals. Most travelers prefer outdoor parking slots for their low rates and proximity to the terminals. The cost of parking with these independent lots is approximately $7, which is half the price of Carpark.

They also offer shuttle services for clients who do not want to walk for those short distances.

Best Time to Visit and Cruise from the Port of Tampa?

Tampa experiences heavy rainfall over the summer, with the rains peaking from June through September . During this period, the region may suffer storms and humid atmospheres, making it a bit difficult to cruise. Temperatures also tend to run quite high, topping to ranges above 86°F (30°C).

Usually, the atmospheric conditions over summer cause a shift of cruise activities from Tampa Bay to other more conducive regions, such as Alaska and the Northeast cruising bays.

The winter season, running from November through March, makes the best cruising time . Over this season, the temperatures are relatively friendly for cruising, with a typical daily range of 70°F (21°C) and 79°F (26°C). Due to the season’s convenience, the November-March season has become Tampa’s peak cruise times.

This is a smaller Florida port, making parking , embarkation and debarkation relatively easy. There are also many local hotels which offer cruise packages or shuttles to the port.

The only potential negative about cruising from Tampa is the potential for fog which may delay ships leaving or returning to port. Tampa’s “fog season” runs from December to February.

Info About Cruise Terminals

Port Tampa Bay has three terminals for cruise ships. All three have ample parking nearby, complete with valet services available through the port’s official parking vendor, Carpark. Located nearby, and within walking distance from terminal #3 and #6 are the Sparkman Wharf and The Florida Aquarium.

The cruise terminal you sail from will depend on which cruise line you’re traveling with. You should always check with your cruise line to make sure which terminal they are using for your cruise.

• Terminal #3 : Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International
• Terminal #6: Various cruise lines

Port Tampa Bay is located at 1101 Channelside Drive, Tampa, FL 33602. However, each terminal has its own address, so if you are driving directly to the terminal it is important to know what address to use in your GPS or map program.

The Port Tampa Bay offers a 75-minute Educational Harbor Tours for passengers free of charge on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. You must make reservations for the tour in advance by calling 813-905-7678.

When it comes to official port parking , many ports will charge an outrageous amount ($20 per day and up), simply because of the convenience. This will often force people to look for parking elsewhere so they can save money.

Port Tampa Bay parking is one of the few exceptions to this. Their standard rate for parking is $15 per day, with a flat upgrade of $20 for valet parking. If you have an oversized vehicle, the port charges double the standard rate.

You can pre-pay for parking online as well. Simply visit the port’s webpage on Tampa cruise parking , select the cruise line you’re sailing on, select the date of your departure and you will have 3 options. You can choose self-parking, valet parking, or oversized vehicles parking. Since you selected your particular cruise the system knows how many days you need to pay for. As mentioned earlier it’s a flat rate of $15 per day but sometimes there are promotional rates.

Of course you don’t have to pre-pay for your parking. You can also just show up at the port and pay there, just in case you totally forgot that little detail in the cruise planning process.

Parking is free for the disabled (including disabled veterans) as the following conditions are met:

• Foot and hand control modifications
• Wheelchair lift and ramp
• Disabled Veterans license plate with vehicle registration

Other Off-site Parking Options

Although Port Tampa Bay has some of the best official parking rates, it can weigh a little heavy on some budgets. Therefore, here are a few other parking options near the cruise port that could possibly let your wallet breathe a little easier. Some of these parking lots are so close to the port you can practically walk to your cruise terminal.

Park 4 Cruise

Park 4 Cruise offers parking that is very close to the port of Tampa. The Orange Lot, which is adjacent to all three cruise terminals, is as low as $10.50 per day (plus 7% sales tax and a $4 processing fee). This parking lot is practically on the premises of the port itself, being less than a quarter mile away. Their website says they are only 300 steps to the terminals from their parking lots, so that’s hard to beat. They will also shuttle you for free to and from the Tampa cruise terminal.

241 Car Services are located as close to the cruise terminals as the port’s official parking lots and at much cheaper rates. Depending on your ship and the length of your cruise, you’re looking at paying roughly $7 to $9 per day, including tax and a $5 service fee.

They will also provide you with free shuttle service and luggage assistance and will give you a free car wash while you’re gone.

Just .3 miles from the Channelside Bay cruise terminal in Tampa, Park Connect has no hidden-fees in their pricing. The cost is $10 per day plus tax and again, there are no service fees. Park Connect offers covered parking areas, free cancellation up to 24-hours before your cruise and an easy to user interface for pre-paying for parking.

Getting to Port Tampa Bay

No matter how you plan to arrive into Tampa, you need a way to get to the port. Driving yourself is easy enough, you just have to find a place to park.

However, if you’re not driving, there are other various ways to get to the port, especially if you’re flying into the Tampa airport.

Getting to the Tampa Bay Port from Tampa International Airport

The cruise port is only 10 miles from the airport and is one of the easiest and most accessible cruise ports in the US. The trip will take 17-20 minutes depending on traffic

While there are taxis available in Tampa, they often charge a flat $30 and up for the short ride from the airport to Port Tampa Bay. If pinching pennies is your preference, consider, instead, using a ridesharing service like Uber or Lyft.

Booking a ride is as simple as downloading the app and choosing a driver. The estimated cost for Uber or Lyft is about $17-$21. But keep in mind that is just an esimate based on the time of the writing of this article.

Cruise Line Transfers

For the sake of convenience, many cruise lines will offer transfers for their passengers from the Tampa airport. Although this is a great service, it can get expensive if you’re traveling with a lot of people. Also, your shuttle is only going to be available on cruise day, so if you fly in the day before you’ll have to seek alternate means of transportation.

Traveling from Orlando

If you live in Orlando, or you decide to fly into Orlando instead and go visit one of the various parks there before your cruise, getting to Tampa for your cruise can be tricky as the two cities are roughly 90 miles apart.

For this we recommend getting a one-way car rental. You should be able to find rates as low as $50-$60 for a car.

If cheaper airfare is the reason you’re considering flying into Orlando, factor in the extra transportation costs between Orlando and Tampa. $100 or more on rental cars (round trip) could end up costing you more than flying into Tampa.

Sparkman Wharf

Located within walking distance from the cruise terminals is Sparkman Wharf. Here you will find all you could ever want in dining and shopping, as well as an open-air biergarten that includes over 24 taps of Florida craft beer, all with a breathtaking waterfront view.

The Florida Aquarium

Also within walking distance of the port (on the other side) is the Florida Aquarium for anyone fascinated by underwater creatures. Visit a large variety of animal habitats from otters, sharks, and octopuses, to seahorses and turtles. They house many exhibits, a splash pad for the kids, and a 4-D theater.

Henry B. Plant Museum

Henry B. Plant was the mastermind behind building the Tampa railway system in the 1800s. This, along with the port, helped Tampa to grow into the bustling metropolis that it is today. He also built the Tampa Bay Hotel, which is now the University of Tampa’s Plant Hall, where the museum is located.

If you’re looking for another great place for the family that’s educational and filled with animals, come over to the ZooTampa at Lowry Park. If you come on the weekend, at 1pm you can stand eye-to-eye with a giraffe and feed them some lettuce. You can also visit a variety of other animals, all safely behind glass enclosures.

Planning your next cruise doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Understanding the city you’ll be traveling to and the logistics involved will give you a great start to making trip planning as painless as possible.

Port to explore opening cruise ship terminal by Tampa’s Riverwalk to the public

TAMPA - For those hoping to get a piece of downtown waterfront property opened to the public when it’s not being used as a cruise ship terminal, the door may have opened just a bit.

At Tuesday’s Port Tampa Bay meeting, Hillsborough County Commissioner Harry Cohen, who sits on the Port Authority board, brought up the parcel of land behind cruise ship Terminal 2 that has long interested downtown boosters.

The property sits in a prime spot between the Sparkman Wharf food and entertainment area and the Florida Aquarium. It’s also close to where the popular 2.6-mile Riverwalk ends — giving it the potential to be a logical and walkable connection in a fast-developing corner of the city.

But the property remains heavily gated and closed on both ends because of security, safety and liability concerns, even though it’s the port’s least-utilized terminal, used for cruise ships about 30 days a year.

At the meeting, Cohen referenced a recent Tampa Bay Times story about ongoing interest in the property for “connectivity” purposes. He asked if the idea of opening it could be looked into and reported back.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, also on the board, agreed: “I’ve heard not just from Roger Germann (CEO) at the aquarium, but from a number of people about having that connection,” she said.

Paul Anderson, CEO of Port Tampa Bay, responded that he “would love nothing more than to get this connected.” But he also cited concerns about security and large pieces of Port equipment housed there. He said it would cost “hundreds of thousands of dollars” to meet what would be required to open it up.

Anderson also said there should “certainly” be a discussion. “I’ll be happy to put something together for you to see,” he said. No date for when that report would be made was discussed.

“We’ll take a look at it and get back to you,” he said.

Those who support the idea of opening the prime piece of waterfront to pedestrians have floated possible funding sources including city and county government, the local Community Redevelopment Area and private donors.

“I think that what we’re asking is for there to be a dialogue about this with all the players,” Cohen said after the meeting. “It’s certainly not the port’s responsibility to make something like this happen alone.”

The Florida Aquarium, Tampa Downtown Partnership and downtown residents and business owners have long eyed that property’s potential. Germann said the aquarium could put exhibits out for people passing by. Opening it up would also give better visibility and access to the historic American Victory Ship and Museum docked nearby.

“When the Florida Aquarium opened 27 years ago, it was built to be an economic and cultural anchor and a connector to nature and neighborhoods,” Germann said Tuesday. “We believe opening the Riverwalk to the residents, those who work downtown and tourists is achievable while still supporting cruise operations at Port Tampa Bay.”

Last year, the property opened as a venue for a national trade show event with music and performers. A spokesperson for the port said they would consider allowing individual events there “on a case-by-case basis.”

16 Tampa Hotels with Shuttles or Transportation to the Cruise Port

Need a Tampa hotel with transportation to the cruise port? That’s a smart way to start your vacation.

You likely know that Tampa is so much more than a cruise port. From amusement parks to casino gambling to aquariums, to beautiful beaches, there’s a wide variety of things to do in the area. It’s no wonder that many people choose to spend a day (or several) in the Tampa area before their cruise.

Of course, if you decide to stay at a Tampa hotel, then there is the question of actually getting to the port. The area has a number of options for getting around , including taxis and Uber/Lyft. However, these options can all cost you money. And depending on how far you are from the port, it can be a considerable amount to get to the cruise ship.

Instead, many people opt for cruise hotels that offer shuttles or other transportation (such as the free trolley) to the port , which is almost always cheaper and more convenient. That’s why we’ve rounded up a number of hotels in the area that offer these services.

While this isn’t meant to be an exhaustive list, it should give you a good start on those hotels that can offer transport to your cruise ship. Prices will vary depending on when you stay. Click each link to read reviews of each hotel on Kayak.

Downtown/Ybor City Hotels Near Trolley Service to the Port

If you are staying in downtown or near the historic Ybor City area, then you can use Tampa’s TECO Streetcar service , which runs between Ybor City and downtown, and stops right by the cruise terminals. Fares are free , and routes run every 12-15 minutes seven days a week. You can view more about the service here .

All of the following hotels are near a streetcar stop, providing an easy ride to the port. 

Aloft Tampa Downtown Modern, hip, trendy, stylish…  they all describe the Aloft Tampa Downtown. But one more word is convenient. It’s just a mile from the port, and only two blocks from the Whiting Street Station where the streetcar picks up. So you can hop on and be at the port within minutes. With good reviews, it’s a solid choice before your cruise.

Hotel Tampa Riverwalk Located right on the Hillsborough River, the Sheraton is an upscale hotel with nice views of both downtown and the river. While it’s close to the port (about a mile), it’s a little far to walk with luggage. Instead, the trolley stop is just a five-minute walk from the hotel, which makes catching a ride a no-brainer.

Hilton Tampa Downtown Just a block from the streetcar station, you can stay here to enjoy your time in Tampa in a nice hotel downtown and get to the cruise port easily. The reviews are great, and not just because the Hilton offers a cool rooftop pool. The TECO Streetcar can get you to the port or other spots such as Ybor City or the Florida Aquarium without the need for an Uber or a taxi.

Embassy Suites Tampa Downtown Embassy Suites is known as a higher-end hotel, and this version doesn’t disappoint. It’s well-reviewed, and the location is hard to beat. It sits right next to the convention center and a 2-minute walk from the Amalie Arena (where the Tampa Bay Lightning play). A TECO stop is right next to the hotel to take you to the cruise port that’s only three stops away.

Tampa Marriott Water Street One of the closest hotels to the cruise port is obviously one of the most convenient for cruise passengers. It’s only a 10-15 minute walk to the port, but only a few minutes if you take the free streetcar that has a stop right outside the hotel (HSBC Station #9). Best of all, the hotel is rated 4.5 out of 5 on Google

Hampton Inn & Suites Ybor City Hampton Inn often ranks as one of the most popular hotels, combining a nice mix of comfort and affordability. Add to that list the fact that this particular hotel is right near Ybor City — the neat historic district of Tampa with lots of restaurants and shops that’s a hotspot at night. Also, this hotel is right near the streetcar stop (Cadrecha Plaza Station #4), so you can get to the port in just a few minutes.

Hilton Garden Inn Ybor City Right in the heart of Ybor City, it’s hard to go wrong with the Hilton Garden Inn. You can stay in a prime location (just a block off of the main street in Ybor), plus when it’s time to head to the port there is the streetcar stop just a short walk away (Centro Ybor Station #2). The ride should only take a few minutes and is free.

Hotel Haya Want a stay that’s a bit different than the chain options that are available anywhere? Situated in Ybor City, this boutique hotel is a cool mix of historic and modern. The courtyard pool is also dreamy. That makes it a great option if you want to start your vacation in Tampa the day before instead of waiting until you are on the cruise ship. It’s also right next to a streetcar stop (Streetcar Society Station #3) that will take you directly to the cruise terminals.

Hampton Inn Downtown Channel District The closest spot to stay to the cruise terminals? It’s this hotel (which is a joint building between Hampton Inn and Home2 Suites). From here you’re a five-minute walk to Terminal 6 or 12 minutes to Terminal 2. Don’t want to walk? It’s even shorter to the TECO Streetcar stop (York Street Station #6), which will take you to the terminal.

Home2 Suites Downtown Channel District As mentioned above, this hotel shares the same building with the Hampton Inn. But if you need more space, the suites available are ideal, and the hotel is highly rated. From here you are just a few minutes’ walk to the cruise ship at Terminal 6. As well, there is a trolley stop right nearby so you can get a ride to your ship if sailing one of the other terminals farther down.

Tampa Hotels with Shuttles to the Cruise Port

While taking a trolley to your cruise is a memorable and unique experience, it’s often less expensive to stay in hotels that are a little farther from the port. The good news is that many hotels cater to cruise passengers and offer shuttle services as a perk.

Quality Inn Airport/Cruise Port This hotel is about a 15-minute drive to the cruise port and a 15-minute drive to the airport. The best news? It offers transportation to both with a “Stay & Cruise” package. The shuttle is included with your stay. In addition, if you are driving to the port, it also offers parking packages. The hotel also has breakfast, a business center (for printing last minute documents), and fitness center.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Tampa East – Ybor City Holiday Inn Express is a well-known brand name that you can assure will offer you a comfy place to stay. But this location goes above and beyond for cruise passengers. Specifically it offers a free shuttle that heads out to the cruise port every 45 minutes. You simply have to sign up for the time that you want when you arrive at check-in.

Quality Inn & Suites Near the Fairgrounds If affordable is what you’re looking for, then the Quality Inn may be right up your alley. Need a ride to the port? It’s likely if you stay here you are driving and parking a car. In that case, the hotel offers a parking package with a roundtrip a cruise shuttle to the port. 

Barrymore Hotel Tampa Riverwalk Sitting right on the river and just a short distance from the cruise port, this location is ideal for those wanting to stay in downtown Tampa before the cruise. The hotel features a “Ship and Shore” cruise package that includes parking (if needed) and shuttle service to and from the cruise port.

Comfort Suites At Fairgrounds-Casino Driving in for the cruise? If so, this hotel is near the Seminole Hard Rock Casino (giving you an entertainment option with the free shuttle to the casino.) It also offers a parking package with shuttle to the port. So you can stay, save on parking at the port, and get a ride to the ship. Best of all, it gets strong reviews without costing a fortune.

SpringHill Suites Tampa Westshore Airport SpringHill Suites is a good find for families since the suite rooms offer more space, often with a kitchenette. This hotel is just about six miles from the cruise port, and offers an “Escape! Park Here” deal that provides cruise parking after your stay for up to two weeks. There is also a shuttle available for $10 per person.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Tampa Airport Westshore While this hotel is by the airport, you are still only about six miles — or 15 minutes — from the cruise terminals. It’s also within walking distance of a number of restaurants. The Embassy Suites offers a “Park, Stay and Go” deal with parking for a week. The offer also includes a shuttle to and from the cruise port.

Carnival cruise ship returns to Florida after funnel fire

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Carnival cruise ship that caught fire over the weekend safely returned to Florida on Monday.

Video from WESH showed the Carnival Freedom bringing passengers back to Port Canaveral around 7:30 a.m.

The ship’s funnel caught fire off the coast of the Bahamas on Saturday.

“The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames. Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike and that is being investigated but cannot yet be confirmed,” Carnival told WFLA in a statement on Saturday.

A portion of the funnel fell onto Deck 10. The crew asked passengers to avoid balconies and open decks for safety.

Carnival said two crew members who extinguished the fire were treated for minor smoke inhalation. No guests were injured.

The cruise line had to cancel the Freedom’s next two voyages , departing on March 25 and March 29, out of Port Canaveral.

Guests scheduled for those cruises will be issued a full refund and a future cruise credit, Carnival said.

The ship will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday to undergo repairs.

A fire broke out in the exhaust funnel of the Carnival Freedom cruise ship near the Bahamas on Saturday, according to a news release.

Officials said the fire was quickly extinguished, but the damage is worse than originally anticipated. As a result, the cruise line announced the March 25 and 29 Freedom cruises from Port Canaveral have been canceled.

According to the release, witnesses reported seeing a lightning strike, but the the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

“The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs,” the release read in part. “We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation. We are providing all guests on both cancelled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us.”
