Star Trek: Discovery: Season 4 Reviews

star trek discovery 4 season

The problem with formulas though is that they tend to become stale, and Discovery’s fourth season is a case in point.

Full Review | Original Score: 2/5 | Jan 3, 2023

Discovery seems to be boldly going on an action-adventure path not unlike the original Star Trek, times many more millions spent each episode.

Full Review | Aug 30, 2022

It’s not perfect, but it constantly strives to be more than it is… and as always… the effort yields its rewards.

Full Review | May 4, 2022

After four seasons, Star Trek: Discovery is in uncharted territory but represents the very best ideals that the franchise can offer.

Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 29, 2022

In short, despite certain imbalances, season 4 of 'Star Trek: Discovery' is off to a pretty good start. [Full review in Spanish]

Full Review | Dec 2, 2021

"Discovery" has broached stories about division, war, and strife and now has finally come back to the original vision of the franchise by imbuing a sense of unity, hope, and camaraderie that helps elevate this to be the best season of the show yet.

Full Review | Original Score: 9/10 | Dec 1, 2021

An unstoppable force tearing its way across the galaxy is about to meet an immovable object in the form of Michael Burnham -- and the mess that's going to leave behind will no doubt make for some interesting fallout for this season to sift through.

Full Review | Dec 1, 2021

It's not easy to maintain the right balance between intimate character moments and events that span the galaxy. "Discovery," however, gets it right more often than not, though there are definitely moments that swing and miss.

Discovery has saved the universe multiple times. Can't they just, I dunno, fly around and hang out for a while?

Full Review | Original Score: B- | Dec 1, 2021

Discovery's action-packed season opener is unlikely to win over any new fans, but it's the ideal introduction to both this year's big threat and the challenges facing Burnham in the captain's chair.

Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | Dec 1, 2021

Fans might be forgiven for wondering just how many chances Discovery could possibly have to reinvent itself. But judging by Season 4's first episode, the fourth time just might be the charm.

Full Review | Original Score: 5/5 | Dec 1, 2021

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 introduces an existential new threat that tests both the mental state of its characters and the ideals they uphold.

Full Review | Original Score: 9.5 | Nov 19, 2021

From comedic buddy adventure to tragedy, the journey encompasses multiple highs and lows, new characters, new settings, and new relationships. It's a lot to take in and promises a season full of exploration, mystery, conflict, and healing.

Full Review | Original Score: 4.5/5 | Nov 18, 2021

Discovery offers up [a premiere] that meets the high visual bar the show has set in previous years, while also lining up some new character dynamics that should prove fruitful moving forward.

Full Review | Original Score: 8/10 | Nov 18, 2021

If depth of character -- other than Burnham -- is still sorely missing from Discovery, at least there's a lot of dazzle to feast on.

Full Review | Original Score: B | Nov 18, 2021

It feels like a rehash from the jump, but perhaps it will go somewhere different.

Full Review | Nov 18, 2021

In Season 4, the crew of Discovery is united, whole, and providing comfort and hope both to each other, and to a world that needs that right now. Maybe that's the most radical reinvention of all.

Star Trek Discovery Season 4 poster

Season 4 poster

This page contains information specifically pertaining to the fourth season of Star Trek: Discovery , whose episode premieres were consecutively streamed on Paramount+ in the USA and broadcast on CTV Sci-Fi Channel / Z in Canada from 18 November 2021 through 17 March 2022 , becoming permanently streamed in Canada on CraveTV the next day.

Earlier advertising indicated that this season would be made available worldwide via Netflix . Less than a week prior to the original release date, it was announced that this would not be the case and that the three previous seasons would be removed from the platform. This was due to the planned extended global rollout of Paramount+ sometime during 2022. [1] [2] As a consequence, season four was initially planned as a North American exclusive to begin.

On 24 November 2021, in response to widespread fan outrage, it was announced the series (including the fourth season) would be made available on Paramount+ in all foreign markets in which the service was already available on 26 November 2021 , which at that particular point in time were not that many (yet) outside the Americas. For the handful of other markets which did not have Paramount+ but did have the Paramount -owned online service Pluto TV , the episodes were made available on the same timetable. Despite this, Discovery 's fourth season remained unavailable for the vast majority of international markets, [3] [4] and essentially became a direct-to-DVD/Blu-ray release for those territories when the Blu-ray and DVD home video formats of season four were eventually released in December 2022.

Background information [ ].

  • On 9 January 2020 , Production Weekly included a fourth season in its listing of upcoming productions, although no official announcement had been made. [5] [6] [7] [8] One of the unofficial early reports had it that production was to start in early July 2020. [9]
  • On 2 March 2020 another early unofficial report had it that not only a fourth season was in the making, but also that it was to be produced back-to-back with a yet to be confirmed fifth season. [10] This turned out not to be the case, but the second season of franchise sibling Star Trek: Picard became produced back-to-back with its third season a year later.
  • Discovery 's fourth season became the second television production, alongside Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' s first season , to be wholly produced to 4K HD 2160p resolution standards by using the new 4K+ ultra high resolution ARRI Alexa cameras. [11] However, when the home video formats of the season were up for release, a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray one had, unlike Strange New World 's, never been under consideration, presumably for reasons that had either to do with the generic trend of fast dwindling physical home video format sales, the continued skepticism with which the series was viewed by classic fandom , or both.
  • On 12 August 2020 showrunner Alex Kurtzman had to concede that the COVID-19 pandemic crisis wrought havoc on the franchise production schedules, and that production for all shows were delayed, including that of Discovery 's fourth season. [12]
  • It was only on 16 October 2020 that the fourth season was officially announced; production began on November 2 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. [13] [14]
  • In a January 2021 interview with Michelle Paradise , she stated that Gray 's storyline will be followed up in season 4 and " That storyline is incredibly important to us. " [15] She expanded on that in a separate interview stating " Representation matters. It matters to see a version of yourself on screen. It matters there are non-binary and transgender characters. It matters that there is a Black woman in the captain's chair. It matters that there is a gay couple on our show. We will continue to do that for the show, and the world we live in, but also, to honor the Star Trek legacy. And to be super clear, we will pay that moment off in Season 4. Gray will be seen. That promise will be paid off. " [16]
  • The entire production crew numbered nearly 80 crew and cast. [17]
  • In the penultimate week of April 2021, production was suspended for two weeks due to suspected on-set COVID-19 exposure. The projected June production wrap was not expected to suffer adversely from the temporary shutdown. [18]
  • Filming wrapped on 23 August 2021 . [19]
  • The premiere date was announced as 18 November 2021 .
  • The escalating move in the ongoing " streaming war " by globally sidelining Netflix as the international disseminator of the series just days before the fourth season premiere, constituted a surprise for many fans outside North America. Much to their chagrin and anger [20] – which was shared by Discovery 's cast and crew [21] – the international Discovery fanbase was now forced to await the launch of Paramount+ in one format or another in their territories sometime in 2022. [22] This was not the case for viewers in Scandinavia, South America, and Australia, where Paramount+ had already been operational since mid-2021, and where the fourth season was expected to be sooner available for viewing after its debut in North America. [23] [24]
  • The gesture of making the season available on Pluto TV in those European territories without Paramount+ was only a partial fix as the service was not available in a large swath of smaller European countries including Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and the majority of the Eastern European countries.
  • It appears that the November 2021 one-sided termination of the Discovery streaming rights by ViacomCBS came with financial compensation for Netflix. [25]
  • Those countries without Paramount+ and/or Pluto TV were expected to be able to stream the season with the advent of a new, Paramount+ encompassing, streaming service in late 2022. However, when that service, SkyShowtime , was eventually launched in the Autumn of 2022, Discovery was not part of its inaugural library content, meaning that the elusive fourth season remained unavailable for official and legal watching in those countries where SkyShowtime was launched. This intentional omission appeared to have been a conscious decision by SkyShowtime itself, [26] arguably motivated to do so by the continued bad press (and resulting weak ratings) it received from classic fandom that kept hounding Discovery ever since it premiered in 2017. For those fans who liked the show however, the issue became moot very shortly thereafter when the fourth season Blu-ray and DVD home video formats were released in early December 2022.
  • The previous point did not apply for those European countries where Paramount+ had been launched a few months earlier that year (but months after the fourth season had already premiered in North America) under its own name, most conspicuously the UK, and where Discovery was a part of the library. [27] UK fans incidentally, were able to watch the fourth season from its very start through Pluto TV, [28] [29] as that service had already been available in the country since 1 October 2018. [30]
  • The premiere of season four came without an official series renewal announcement as had hitherto been customary for the Kurtzman-era Star Trek shows, [31] which included Discovery 's season four which had been officially announced the day after its third season debuted.
  • The renewal for a fifth season was eventually announced on 18 January 2022 . [32]

The fourth season scored two wins out of fifteen award nominations, thereby achieving a success rate of 13%, but which also constituted a 13% decrease over the preceding season. Furthermore, the season earned the dubious distinction of becoming the very first Star Trek live-action season not to receive even a single Emmy Award nomination, and up until that point in time a distinction only shared with the second season of the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks .

What the Star Trek Discovery Season 4 Finale Ending Means for Season 5

Here's how the crew made it through that Star Trek: Discovery season 4 finale, and a look at what it means for season 5.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 13 - Coming Home

This article contains Star Trek: Discovery spoilers.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 13

It’s been a long road. Because of a mid-season break, and a contemplative, slow-burn plot, Star Trek: Discovery season 4 probably seems a bit longer than it actually is. If any old school fans were worried Discovery couldn’t do a big-idea science fiction story without resorting to an action-adventure plot, the totality of season four proves those haters wrong. Fans will probably be split if this is the best season of Discovery , but, one thing’s for sure, from a tonal point of view, it was easily the most consistent. And, by the end of episode 13, “Coming Home,” the series seems to be confidently stepping into yet another new direction.

Here’s what happened at the end of the Star Trek: Discovery season 4 finale and what it might mean for season 5…

The DMA averted

After President T’Rina (Tara Rosling) does a big scary mind-meld with the alien species known as the Ten-C, it appears, at least, for a moment, that the united front of the Federation and their allies won’t be able to convince these aliens to stop the DMA from destroying Earth and Ni’Var. T’Rina’s mind meld attempt was noble however and totally references Spock doing similar large-scale mind-melds in the Star Trek: The Animated Series episode “One of Our Planets Is Missing,” and, of course, Star Trek: The Motion Picture . But, in the end, the crew has to communicate their intentions through the most classic model of Star Trek diplomacy; brutal honesty, and some actual apologies.

Ad – content continues below

In the end, the Ten-C narrowly shut off the massive Dark Matter Anamoly hurtling toward both Earth and Ni’Var, which saves everyone’s lives. On top of this Book also insists that the Ten-C not just scale back their massively destructive mining procedures, but also, shut it down entirely. This moment is a pretty clear statement about climate change and alternative energies, but in the Discovery version, the stakes are much broader. This season, we learned that the Ten-C were using the DMA to mine for boronite and were unaware this process caused destruction because they didn’t view any of the life in our galaxy as “higher lifeforms.” Burnham, Book, and the rest of the crew convince them otherwise, but shutting down the hugely destructive mining process was the bigger win.

Book’s punishment

Back in episode 7, “…But to Connect,” Book (David Ajala) disregarded the Federation’s vote to pursue diplomatic relations with the Ten-C, and instead, opted to join up with Tarka in trying to deliver an isolytic weapon to destroy the DMA and harness the power of the DMA controller. This put Book at odds with Burnham and the crew of the Discovery for pretty much the entire second half of the season. In the end, Book realizes Tarka has gone too far, and with a little help from Reno, prevents the rogue scientist from ruining any chance at diplomacy.

Book is also instrumental in getting the Ten-C to change their ways. However, when the smoke clears, he’s still broken a ton of Federation laws, regardless of how it shook out. At the very end, we learn what his punishment is: He’s tasked with helping refugees displaced by the DMA. This easily makes one wonder if David Ajala will still be a series regular in Discovery season 5. He’s no longer on the ship, so will he still be around?

The return of Tilly (But Where’s Gray?)

Although Tilly (Mary Wiseman) left the ship to teach at Starfleet Academy in “All Is Possible,” (episode 4 this season) she returns triumphantly in the finale to assist Admiral Vance (Oded Fehr) with the excavation of Earth. To be clear, Tilly doesn’t rejoin the crew formally, either. Which, like Book, makes you wonder, is Mary Wiseman a regular in season 5, or a recurring guest star? Right now, Michelle Paradise, the showrunner for Discovery can’t reveal anything about the next season, but has gone on record saying that once characters enter the DISCO universe, “they’re always part of this world.”

This seems to indicate that the entire DISCO gang, no matter how spread out, can still reunite in some way shape or form. Obviously, this includes Gray (Ian Alexander) who left for Trill earlier in the season, but also means that  Lt. Bryce (Ronnie Rowe Jr.) and the mysterious Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg) could be back in the mix for Season 5, too.

Earth and the United Federation of Planets

The biggest news of the Discovery season 4 comes at the very, very end. Here we learn that United Earth — previously separated from the Federation after the Burn — is now a full-fledged UFP member again. The President of Earth (played by real life politician Stacey Abrams) doesn’t even hesitate in rejoining the Federation. And, because Vance and Tilly reallocated Fed HQ to Earth’s orbit, it seems to indicate that Discovery season 5 could, at least partially, take place on the Earth of the 32nd Century.

In theory, this has been coming for awhile, and in the season 3 episode, “People of Earth,” the crew even visited the location of where Starfleet Academy used to be. But now, we’re all one big happy fleet again. The return of the Federation to Earth also means the return of Starfleet, which suddenly could make Discovery season 5 a show about something we’ve never quite seen before: A Star Trek series that actually digs into what Earth of the far future could be like.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Gets Major Filming Update From Paul Wesley

C aptain Kirk actor Paul Wesley reveals when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 is expected to begin filming. Spinning out of Star Trek: Discovery , the sci-fi show follows the earlier voyages of the starship Enterprise before the events of the original series. In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Wesley follows in the footsteps of William Shatner and Chris Pine in taking on the role of James Tiberius Kirk before he took the Enterprise's command seat.

As Wesley opened up about his career to The Hollywood Reporter , the actor shed light on his upcoming commitments to the Star Trek franchise. Wesley founded a bourbon brewing company with his Vampire Diaries co-star Ian Somerhalder, and he revealed that he expects to hand over duties to Somerhalder and others when filming on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 commences next year. He said:

For example, Im going off to shoot season four of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in February, and they know that. So, Ive accounted for that time, and Im committed to that, and Ians gonna take over some of my duties, and I have other team members.

The actor also explained how maintaining his acting career remains an important part of his life, saying:

I need to be in front of the camera. I need to do things, as far as finding characters. That, for me, thats rewarding. Ive done it since I was a child. Ive literally been doing theater since I was in third grade, and so I have to continue doing it. And also it feeds the product. If Im doing well, then the companys thriving as well, because I have more eyeballs on me, I suppose.

What This Means For Star Trek's Future

Farewells and new beginnings are on the horizon.

Currently, the Star Trek franchise is undergoing great change, with many of its shows either wrapped or about to bring their runs to a close. Discovery 's 5-season voyage concluded in May, Picard took its bow in 2023, Prodigy essentially ended in July, and Lower Decks will conclude in the fall. As such, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the only ongoing series that will carry on beyond 2024, with season 3 expected to be released in 2025. Wesley's comments reiterate its longevity, as season 4 puts it on track to rival Discovery and Prodigy for the longest-running new Trek show.

However, the next chapter of Star Trek is already in progress. Also following on from the events of Star Trek: Discovery , the upcoming Starfleet Academy will depict a new generation of heroes at the titular institution learning the ropes as they prepare for their own adventures. Furthermore, Star Trek movies will return in the form of the Michelle Yeoh-led Section 31 movie for Paramount+. Section 31 is also building off a story established by Discovery, so between that, Starfleet Academy , and Strange New Worlds , it so far seems like Star Trek 's future is rooted in its first streaming series.

Our Take On Star Trek: Strange New World's Season 4 Update

There shouldn't be a break in star trek's yearly releases.

While the scope of Star Trek 's television output is largely slowing down, the franchise as it exists under Alex Kurtzman isn't at risk of breaking its streak of yearly releases since Discovery 's debut in 2017. Not only is Strange New Worlds season 3 confirmed to air in 2025, but Section 31 is currently expected to air later in the same year. As such, fans will not be left with gap years not featuring any new on-screen Star Trek releases.

Furthermore, no word has been given on whether season 4 will bring Pike's journey to a close, so it is fairly likely that Strange New Worlds will continue into a potential fifth season and beyond, even if the Enterprise's current captain has his fate sealed by the original series. With the show's typical turnaround times and Wesley's confirmation of season 4's early 2025 filming, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds should be able to maintain the franchise's television presence until the new projects can gain their footing.

I’m So Glad This Star Trek: Voyager Season 4 Episode Made A Risky Story Decision

Jeri ryan's seven of nine costumes in star trek: voyager made no sense, this star trek: voyager episode subtly confirmed captain kirk broke a tos promise.

Star Trek: Voyager delivered a disappointing season 4 ending in comparison to its other finale episodes. Before the finale, season 4 delivered a well-rounded episode set and some shake-ups that made Voyager 's cast of characters work better together. The season began with the departure of Kes (Jennifer Lein) and the introduction of Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), which helped cement the characters' dynamics more cohesively. Likewise, Voyager season 4 had some of the series' best episodes , including the two-part "Year of Hell" which is often considered the show's pinnacle.

After a season of highs, Voyager should have delivered an explosive season 4 finale to close things out. However, the actual finale, "Hope and Fear," ended up being a disappointment. The episode had a great guest start in the form of Ray Wise as Arturis, an alien with the power to seemingly get Voyager 's crew home using quantum slipstream technology. "Hope and Fear" also brought back several storylines that the season had success with, such as the Borg and season 4 villain Species 8472 . However, where season 4 had succeeded before, "Hope and Fear" ended up missing the mark .

Star Trek: Voyager’s “Hope And Fear” Fails As Season 4's Finale

The episode was lackluster at best.

If "Hope and Fear" had aired mid-season 4, it might have done better, but the episode completely failed as a finale. For one thing, "Hope and Fear" broke Voyager 's usual mold of ending the season with a two-parter . Voyager 's usual two-part finale/openers not only provided a cliffhanger for the next season to resolve but generally created a much more interesting and involved storyline. "Hope and Fear" itself wouldn't have worked as a two-parter, but if Voyager had done a different storyline with the last episode of season 4, they might have been able to create something more engaging.

One Star Trek: Voyager season 4 episode made a smart storytelling choice, jumping right into the action instead of wasting time on exposition.

Likewise, "Hope and Fear" reusing plotlines that Voyager had already done made the episode feel tired. Season 4 extensively explored the fallout from the two-parter, "Scorpion," which dealt with Voyager's participation in the Borg's conflict with Species 8472. The Borg and Species 8472 had already been explored extensively throughout the season, so returning to the storyline one more time almost made it seem like Voyager was out of ideas . The attempt to show some of the conflict's consequences in the form of Arturis didn't hit the mark, even if Ray Wise turned in a creditable performance.

The One Exciting Thing That Star Trek: Voyager’s Season 4 Finale Introduced

"hope and fear" did introduce one good thing to the franchise.

However, "Hope and Fear" did end up introducing one interesting concept to Star Trek: Voyager which was explored in later episodes. "Hope and Fear" was the first appearance of the quantum slipstream drive, a technology which, during the episode, propelled the USS Voyager 300 lightyears closer to its destination in a matter of minutes. Slipstream technology would go on to be a crucial part of Voyager's 100th episode "Timeless," an incredible episode with an engaging time-travel plot that showed the consequences of the technology beautifully.

While slipstream travel was only briefly referenced in Discovery 's third season, the slipstream drive made a bigger appearance in Prodigy season 1, with Admiral Janeway's USS Dauntless acting as another reference to "Hope and Fear."

Additionally, slipstream drives have become a small but important aspect of the modern Star Trek franchise , being referenced in shows like Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Prodigy . While slipstream travel was only briefly referenced in Discovery 's third season, the slipstream drive made a bigger appearance in Prodigy season 1, with Admiral Janeway's USS Dauntless acting as another reference to "Hope and Fear," taking its name from Arturis's original ship . Despite Star Trek: Voyager delivering a less-than-stellar installment with "Hope and Fear," the franchise has still found ways to make the episode important.
