Bare Island

Bare Island is located to the south-east of Sydney and is one of the most scenic destinations in the city .

The island is an iconic part of the country and is listed in the State Heritage Register due to its status in Australian history.

Bare Island Fort Tour, Snorkelling & Diving La Perouse, Sydney NSW

The islet connects to the beautiful suburb of La Perouse via a footbridge. Once here, visitors can marvel at the historic tunnels and military fort, which can be seen only on  a guided tour . The tour allows visitors to step back in time to this unique attraction .

The guided tour around Bare Island is easy, making it suitable for all ages. It is available every Sunday and lasts around 45 minutes. Note that bookings are required for the guided tours on Bare Island.

The waters around the island are perfect for scuba diving , one of the most popular locations for scuba diving in all of New South Wales. Those looking for an adrenaline fix will also enjoy snorkelling in the nearby Kamay Botany Bay National Park . Moreover, the reefs stretching around the island are home to some of the country’s vibrantly coloured marine animals. Look out for the sea dragons, red Indian fish and seals.

The park has no entry fee; however, you will need to pay for a guide if you want to tour Bear Island.

The external walls of the fortified island

Bare Island

In the 1860s Britain removed its garrison troops from its Australian colonies, which resulted in a rapid examination of the colonies’ defenses. Britain’s war with Russia escalated fears of an invasion (not sure how Russia was going to send an invasion force all the way to Australia). As a result two Imperial Engineers arrived (Scratchley who also designed Fort Scratchley in Newcastle and Jervois). Between them and with the assistance of colonial architects they devised a series of forts to defend the coastline and major centres. One of these was Bare Island.

With excellent views over the entrance to Botany Bay, Bare Island was perfectly placed to guard against an overland attack of Sydney. Manned by around 70 soldiers it served as a fort from it’s completion in 1886 until the early 1900s. With changing technology, the fort became a war veterans’ home until 1942 when the military again took up residence.

Bare Island Fort Today

Unfortunately during the 1930s all but the two largest guns were sold for scrap. The largest guns remain only because they were too heavy to move. In 1967, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service  (NPWS) were given control of the now gazetted historical site. In 1989, the fort opened to the public.

Getting There

We drove to La Perouse and parked in the foreshore parking area. From here we walked over the pedestrian bridge to Bare Island.

NPWS conduct guided tours of the island, which can be booked online. Joining a tour at the entrance gate is possible, but only if there is room. Book onlie to avoid disappointment.

Access to the island is via a pedestrian bridge. Your guide will meet you at the far end of the bridge and let you through the gates. From here, the tour takes you through the gun pits, tunnels and rooms of the fort. The guide provides a narration throughout the tour, so you receive the full history of the island.

From the top of the island, you get amazing views of Botany Bay, while being able to appreciate the importance of the fort as it overlooks the bay’s entrance.

What Did We Think of Bare Island?

This was a great tour, full of history and interesting things to see. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, providing us with lots of information on the Island’s history. Especially good was the group size, which was no so large that you missed out on seeing things.

Bare Island Fort

Things to do la perouse , randwick , new south wales.

Captain Cook first spotted the area now known as Bare Island in 1770, and referred to it in his journal as ‘a small bare island’. The fort was built in the early 1880s to protect Sydney’s back door. It was in operation until 1908, after which time it became Australia’s first war veterans’ home.

Bare Island Fort’s structure provides a picturesque backdrop for any event, with spectacular scenic views over La Perouse. You may also recognise the island as the location for some thrilling action sequences in the Hollywood film, Mission: Impossible 2.

The water surrounding Bare Island Fort is also one of the most popular scuba diving sites in NSW, as well as a very popular location for snorkelling in Kamay Botany Bay National Park.

Bare Island

Alice Ellis

Time Out says

The government of the day built an elaborate fort on this island 30 metres off the coast of La Perouse in the early 1880s, seeing the land Cook had described a century earlier as “a small bare island” as a good place to ward off invaders. But from the moment it opened in 1885, there were problems: an 1890 Royal Commission found that inferior concrete had been used and the crumbling fort was decommissioned by 1902. It was next used as a retirement home for war vets before coming under the jurisdiction of the NSW Parks and Wildlife Service. Later, it would cameo in Mission Impossible II . The island is also the usual location of the four-times-a-year  Blak Markets , an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led cultural and shopping event.

Island hop? You can tour the historical island on select days ( $15 per adult; $13 per concession; $10 per child; $45 for 2 adults and 2 kits).  The surrounding reefs are a hot spot for local divers.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.
