Best Travel Changing Pads for On-The-Go Diaper Changes

Have you ever had to change your baby’s diaper on the go? If you’re on a trip, in a hotel, running an errand, or just out for the day, a non-toxic travel changing pad will come to your rescue when your little one is ready for a diaper change.

Travel changing pads are foldable, flat pads that provide surface protection from germs, and a softer space to lay your baby. They might not offer a ton of cushion for your baby, but they will help get the job done.

Here are our favorite non-toxic travel changing pads! Slip one into your diaper bag.

Natemia Organic Cotton Travel Changing Mat

boy travel changing pad

Buy on Amazon | Natemia

Made in Portugal. Stylish and convenient, Natemia’s organic cotton travel changing mats are perfect for on-the-go diaper changes with your baby. Featuring organic cotton and an Oeko-Tex certified polyfill, they provide a clean and safe surface for your baby, with just enough cushion for comfort.

This material is soft and safe for your baby but is not waterproof or wipeable. Keep this in mind while changing your baby.

Make Make Organics Portable Changing Pad

Make Make Organic Portable Changing Pad

Buy on MakeMake Organics

Made in India. Make Make Organics offers a rather innovative portable changing pad. It has elastic straps to store essentials in so when you unfold it, everything is ready to go. Alternatively, you can tuck items like soiled clothing inside these elastic compartments after the diaper change to store until you you have time to launder it.

This portable changing pad is 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton and coated in a water-resistant USDA-certified plant-based extract. This is an excellent option for on-the-go diaper changes especially if you want a blanket-like surface for your baby while being able to keep things organized and clean!

LilyMoon Portable Diaper Changing Pad

boy travel changing pad

Buy on Amazon

Made in China. The LilyMoon portable changing pad gives you everything you need in one little bundle! With a padded pillow, diaper and wipes pockets, and more, you can stash everything you need in this handy little pouch.

As far as materials go, this travel changing pad is made from PEVA material that is Oeko-Tex certified. While I wouldn’t say this is totally non-toxic, it is a cleaner option that offers a lot of functionality. If you do buy this item, I would probably recommend laying a swaddle blanket underneath your baby, just in case.

But otherwise, it does look like a good and cleaner option for on-the-go diaper changes! I would totally get this for the convenience factor alone + the fact that it’s Oeko-Tex certified doesn’t hurt.

If you're new to getting your period and don't feel certain about what you're doing, or are worried about getting blood all over your hands, don't worry - it's not a difficult process. While anything that's new can seem scary, changing a sanitary pad (often just referred to as "pads") is a quick, simple task that doesn't require stressing or worrying. You'll learn how to do it quickly enough.

Things You Should Know

  • Wash your hands so they're clean.
  • Grab a clean edge of the old pad and peel it off your underwear. Roll it up with the soiled part on the inside and toss it in the trash.
  • Remove the paper strip on the back of a new pad.
  • Press the new pad glue-side down into the middle of your underwear so it's centered.

Step 1 Bring a fresh pad to the bathroom.

  • Wash your hands before you change the pad. You want your hands to be clean when you handle the new pad.
  • You should change your pad every three to four hours unless your period is heavy. In that case, you should change your pad more frequently.
  • Your pad can begin to smell if you don't change it promptly. A heavily saturated pad that is worn too long can also cause chaffing or a rash, and the build up of bacteria can potentially cause an infection.

Step 2 Pull down your pants or skirt and your underwear and sit or squat over the toilet.

  • Make sure your underwear and pants aren't touching the outside of the toilet when you pull them down around your legs.

Step 3 Remove the pad by gripping a clean edge between your fingers and peeling it off your underwear.

  • If there is not a trash receptacle in the bathroom stall (there is usually a little bin on the floor or built into the side of the wall, just bring the pad out with you and throw it out as soon as possible. There's probably a trash can in the bathroom by the sink.
  • If you have pets at home, make sure you always throw out your pad in a garbage can with a lid. Animals can be attracted to the smell and might take your pad out of an open trash can. They may rip it up and cause a mess, or they may consume parts of the pad, which can endanger their lives.

Step 1 Make sure you're using the right pad.

  • Use an overnight pad if you are going to sleep. They have maximum absorbency and are often extra long to prevent leaking if you sleep on your back.
  • Pads with wings will give you more security--they will keep your pad in place and are especially great if you plan to do something active.
  • If you are near the end of your period, and you have a very light flow, consider pantyliners, which are very slim and protect your underwear from spotting.

Step 2 Remove the paper strip on the back of the pad.

  • If your pad has wings, remove the paper to expose the adhesive glue and wrap them around the fabric of your underwear.
  • If you are sitting or laying on your back, you may want to slide the pad backward slightly, toward your butt.
  • You may have a few leaks at first, but as you get more used to wearing pads and your period, you will have a better idea of the best placement.

Step 4 Stand up, pull up your pants, and check the fit.

  • Before you pull up your pants, you probably want to wipe with toilet paper or a baby wipe so feel fresh and clean.

Step 5 Wash your hands before leaving the bathroom.

About This Article

If you’ve recently gotten your period, you may feel a little nervous about how to change your sanitary pad. Luckily, it’s a quick and easy process that you’ll get the hang of in no time. Before changing your pad, wash your hands so they’re clean when you touch the new pad. Remove the old pad by grabbing a clean edge and peeling it off your underwear. Roll the pad so the adhesive side is on the outside and wrap it in toilet paper or the wrapper from the new pad before tossing it in the bathroom garbage. Then, pull off the paper strip on the back of the pad and press the sticky side onto the middle of your underwear. If your pad has wings, remove the paper over the adhesive strips on the sides of the pad and wrap them around the fabric of your underwear. Make sure the pad is centered and comfortable in your underwear before leaving the bathroom so you can make any small adjustments if needed. Trump Campaign Criticizes Walz for State Law Providing Tampons in Schools

The law, which was passed in Minnesota last year, includes language requiring menstrual products to be available in bathrooms of all schools for grades 4 to 12 as a way to accommodate transgender students.

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota has been out front on issues that protect the rights of the state’s L.G.B.T.Q. people.

By Chris Cameron

  • Published Aug. 6, 2024 Updated Aug. 9, 2024

As part of their effort to portray Tim Walz, the new Democratic vice-presidential candidate, as a far-left liberal, the Trump campaign attacked the Minnesota governor on Tuesday for signing a bill last year that provides access to menstrual products for transgender students.

At issue is broadly inclusive language in the law, which states that products like pads, tampons and other products used for menstruation “must be available to all menstruating students in restrooms regularly used by students in grades 4 to 12.” Republican state lawmakers in Minnesota had tried — and failed — to amend that bill so that it would apply only to “female restrooms,” though some Republicans went on to vote for the final version of the bill .

Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the Trump campaign, said in an interview on Tuesday on Fox News that the law, among other policies seen as supportive of transgender rights, was “a threat to women’s health.”

“As a woman, I think there is no greater threat to our health than leaders who support gender-transition surgeries for young minors , who support putting tampons in men’s bathrooms in public schools,” Ms. Leavitt said. “Those are radical policies that Tim Walz supports. He actually signed a bill to do that.”

State Representative Sandra Feist , a Democrat and the chief author of the bill, said in an interview that it was important for her and the student activists who pushed for the change that transgender students were able to access menstrual products without having to ask for them.

“I actually received emails,” Ms. Feist said. “From trans students, parents, teachers, librarians, custodians from across the country, talking about how they were — or that they knew — trans students who faced these barriers and needed these products, and how much it meant to them that they would have that access, and also that we were standing up for them.”

Mr. Walz made significant efforts to protect the rights of L.G.B.T.Q. people in Minnesota as governor, and was an early supporter of gay rights going as far back as his time as a high school teacher in the 1990s. Mr. Walz signed a bill last year designating Minnesota as a legal refuge for transgender people.
