Visit the Blue Mountains By Train: 2 Easy Itineraries

Visiting the Blue Mountains by train on a day trip is a great way to save money and have more control over your itinerary. It’s easy and with our advice, you have everything you need for a fantastic day trip out of Sydney.

Update: This itinerary has been updated for the new July 2024 timetable.

How to Plan a One Day Blue Mountains trip by Train

How much does a train ticket to the blue mountains cost, what time should you take the train to the mountains, a day of short bushwalks and lots of photo opportunities, planning your stops on the blue mountains explorer bus, how long should you spend at scenic world, planning which bushwalks to take.

This page contains affiliate links. Our full disclosure policy is   here .

We have put together two one-day itineraries for visiting the stunning UNESCO listed Blue Mountains using a combination of the train from Sydney and Hop on hop off (HOHO) Bus .

  • Visiting Scenic Worldand using the HOHO bus to see the main sites.
  • Skipping Scenic World for more bushwalking time.

Let’s start with our tips for taking the train to the mountains.

Catching the train to the Blue Mountains from Sydney

Trains to the mountains leave from Central Station, usually from platforms 5-12 in the main hall.

Take a seat upstairs on the left for the best views once you reach the lower mountains.

The journey takes just under two hours, and most of it isn’t scenic, so bring a book or nap.

Sydney Central Station indicator board country trains the starting point for your Blue Mountains by train itinerary

The cost of tickets depends on the time of the day and the day of the week.

If you catch the train before 6:30am or after 10am, it’s $6.88 one way; during peak times, it’s $9.84. The return peak is between 3pm and 7pm.

On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the Opal weekend travel cap is $8.40 per day. The cheap fare means more people on the trains, which can lead to no empty seats on the way home!

If you’re unfamiliar with the Opal system, read our 101 Guide to using Opal in Sydney first .

The early bird catches the worm and avoids the tour buses, so set your alarm and get to bed before midnight!

Trains from Katoomba:

Catch one of the first two services. These trains will get you up to the mountains in time for a coffee before the first HOHO bus departs or Scenic World opens.

If you prefer to drive, check out our Blue Mountains self-drive itineraries .

If you are on a tight budget, you might like our guide to exploring the mountains using the public bus system, we think the HOHO bus is worth it!

Itinerary 1 – with Scenic World & HOHO Bus

This itinerary focuses on the best-known spots in the Blue Mountains: Echo Point, home of the Three Sisters, Scenic World, and Leura. It’s a great choice for anyone who prefers shorter bush walks or hasn’t had time to research.

Blue Mountains HOHO bus

Being able to hop on and off the bus is perfect for families with young kids who may struggle to keep up on a group tour.

I recommend buying a Lyrebird Pass online to save time on arrival. The pass includes the hop on hop off bus and entry to Scenic World so you won’t have to line up for a ticket in Katoomba.

If you plan to visit Scenic World, ticket lines can be long. Having a ticket means you can get to the rides before the crowds.

If you’re not visiting Scenic World, buy the standard HOHO pass .

Related: Check out our guide to Fifty+ Things to Do in the Blue Mountains

If you’re early, head to the Blue Mountains Explorer Bus office at Katoomba Station to pick up your guidebook. It will help you plan your stops over coffee. The office opens at 8:45am on weekdays and 8:15am on weekends. If you bought your ticket online, you can show your voucher to the driver and collect your booklet when you board.

9:15am – Join the bus on Katoomba Street, opposite the Carrington Hotel (Stop 1)

Carrington Hotel Katoomba

The first HOHO bus leaves Katoomba at 9.15am and arrives at Echo Point at 9:27am.

If you’re visiting Scenic World today, go there first. The first HOHO bus from Katoomba leaves at 9:45am and arrives at 10am. The big tour buses arrive around 10:30am, so arriving earlier will help you avoid queues. If you arrive later, visit Scenic World in the late afternoon. If you come later in the day, leave Scenic World until mid-afternoon.

If you arrive early, head to stop number two and check out the street art in Beverly Place before getting on the bus.

10am – Arrive at Scenic World East Station, show your pass and walk in. (Stop 7)

If you want to take all three rides at Scenic World , I suggest allowing about an hour for your visit. This is how I would plan my time:

Ride the Scenic Skyway first.

The bus stops at Eastern Station shortly after Three Sisters. Walk to the lookout before joining the skyway line. You should board quickly at this time.

Blue Mountains Scenic Skyway

The Skyway offers 360-degree views as it travels 270m across the valley, passing Katoomba Falls.

Get a spot by the window at the back or right-hand side for the best views of Katoomba Falls on the skyway to Scenic World.

You also get a fantastic view of the Three Sisters. The glass bottom floor lets you feel the vastness of the valley.

The light across the valley is best earlier in the day, and the Skyway is popular with tour groups, so I recommend taking this ride first.

Blue Mountains Scenic Skyway view

After crossing the valley, you can walk to the top of Katoomba Falls and return to the Skyway. Or, you can get off at stop 8 (the Eastern Skyway Station) and rejoin the Skyway after the walk.

Ride the Railway next

Return to the main Scenic World station and line up for the Scenic Railway.

Blue Mountains Scenic Railway

The railway ride to the valley floor is an attraction in itself. The bottom platform has fantastic views of the Three Sisters. The trip down is like a rollercoaster ride. If you’re scared of heights, you might prefer to ride up and take the cable car down and the railway up.

The Scenic Walkway

The Scenic Walkway is a 2.4km boardwalk between the railway and the cable car. It’s accessible for prams and wheelchairs with a natural incline and handrails.

Scenic Walkway Scenic World Katoomba

There is an extension that is not wheelchair accessible and adds 10 mins to the trail. There was nothing significantly different on this part of the walk, so it’s okay to skip it if you like. Follow the signs to the cableway.

The Scenic Cableway will take you back up to the base station from the valley floor.

Blue Mountains Cableway at Scenic World

11.00am – Get back on the HOHO bus; if you miss it, there’s one every hour.

The next stop is NarrowNeck Lookout. The bus usually stops here for a couple of minutes so you can take a quick photo. If you’re not doing a bushwalk, re-board the bus after taking your shot.

HOHO Bus at Narrowneck lookout

11:19am – Arrive at Katoomba Falls Tourist Park (Stop 14)

This is one of the prettiest mountain walks. Follow the signs to the main Katoomba Falls lookout, then backtrack to the Katoomba Cascades walk. There are picnic tables at the top of the cascades.

Katoomba Falls Blue Mountains

1:01pm – Rejoin the HOHO bus at Stop 8 (Katoomba Cascades) and stay on board to Leura Village.

1:27pm – Arrive at Leura Cascades (stop 18) for a picnic. If you haven’t brought lunch, stay on the bus to Leura Village.

Leura Blue Mountains

Explore Leura Mall and visit Josophan’s for their delicious chocolate. There are many shops with tempting items. I always end up spending too much time and money at Teddy Sinclair and Leura Whisk.

Bathrooms are off the main street near Woolworths supermarket.

Teapot Muesum Leura Blue Mountains

heck out Bygone Beauty’s Treasured Teapot Museum, which houses the world’s largest private collection of tableware, including over 5,500 teapots from around the world. They also offer a great afternoon tea.

If you’re not a big shopper, get off at stop 20 or 21 and check out Lyrebird Dell or Elysian & Olympian Lookouts.

3:35pm – Reboard the bus at Leura Station (stop 22) and travel to the Three Sisters (Echo Point)

3:57pm – Arrive at Echo Point (Stop 6)

Walk down to the Three Sisters viewing platform for fantastic views of the rock formation and the valley to Mount Solitary; if you’re up for it, head down to see the Three Sisters up close.

Mount Solitary Blue Mountains

Walk through the stone archway next to the visitors’ centre and follow the path to Honeymoon Bridge to walk out onto the first sister.

Honeymoon Bridge Blue Mountains

There’s a visitors centre, with a gift shop you might want to visit before you leave.

If your legs are up to it, walk to Katoomba town centre instead of taking the bus. If you don’t want to walk, go to the Lookout bar for a cold drink and views.

Take a walk along the main street and check out the street art in Beverly Place.

4:57pm – Catch the bus back to Leura station (stop 23) to connect with a train to Sydney or Katoomba.

Katoomba Street Art

Trains to Sydney leave Katoomba Station hourly at twenty minutes past the hour on weekdays and twice hourly on weekends at twenty-two and thirty-eight minutes past the hour.

If you’re not in a hurry to return to Sydney, the sunset over the valley at the Three Sisters is worth seeing. The last drop off at Echo Point is at 4:57pm. If you stay, you’ll need to take a local bus back to the station. You can use your Opal card or credit/debit card on these buses.

If you want to have dinner in the mountains before heading home, our two favourite options are The Bootlegger, opposite the station, or Mountain Culture a couple of blocks west. There’s a train at 8:20pm that gets back to Sydney at 10:21pm.

Itinerary 2- The HOHO bus and lots of bushwalking

This itinerary focuses on longer walks and less time in Katoomba and Leura, and excludes Scenic World. Pack water and snacks for exploring the trails.

Small waterfall in the Blue Mountains

Check for closures before starting this itinerary. The top-rated Prince Henry Cliff Walk at Leura and the Valley of the Waters in Wentworth Falls are partially closed due to landslides and may not reopen soon.

This itinerary includes three walks, but there are more options in the guidebook you get with your HOHO bus ticket.

9:15 am – Take the first bus from Stop 1 to Echo Point. If you need picnic items, walk to Hominy Bakery or Aldi supermarket on Katoomba Street. There’s a second stop at the end of the street to save you the walk back.

9:27 am – Alight at Echo Point (Stop 7) and walk to the Three Sisters lookout for your first view of the Jamison Valley.

Three Sisters viewing platform

Take a short walk onto the first sister and then retrace your steps to the carpark where you will find signs for the Prince Henry Cliff Walk.

Prince Henry Cliff Walk in the Blue Mountains

The Prince Henry Cliff walk to Katoomba Cascades is 2.3km long and graded as moderate. There are many steps, but it’s not too challenging for someone with average fitness.

Stairs along the Prince Henry Cliff Walk Blue Mountains

There are lookouts all along the way, and you should be able to cover it in an hour.

12:19pm – Join the HOHO at stop 14: Katoomba Falls Tourist Park and ride to stop 21 Lyrebird Dell.

1 2:33pm – Lyrebird Dell to Pool of Siloam. This walk is tougher than this morning’s but it’s one of my favourites in this section of the mountain.

The environment is wetter, and ferns flourish. There are waterfalls and a cave with Aboriginal engravings.

If you’re not up for a challenging walk, you can get off at stop 20 and walk to Elysian & Olympian Lookouts. Not as impressive as Lyrebird Dell but still lovely.

The Pool of Siloam

2:35pm – Return to Stop 23 for the bus to Leura Village, where your walking ends and the coffee and cake are calling. It’s easy to spend an hour here looking in the shop windows.

From here, you can shop before catching a bus to watch the sunset at Echo Point or take a train back to Sydney from Leura or Katoomba Stations. Check the sunset times here.

Cute shops in Leura Blue Mountains

Trains to Sydney leave Leura at 4:24pm and then hourly until just before 10:30pm. Trains leave Katoomba five minutes earlier.

If you need more suggestions, study the guidebook your driver will give you. It contains 16 more walks. If you are staying overnight, they will usually give you a free pass extension for the next day!

Excellent and comprehensive piece! Some of my fondest and early childhood memories are on the Skyway.

Helpful tips on the Blue Mountain and Scenic World. The waterfalls look beautiful.

Thank you for a very detailed guide for visiting the Blue Mountains. It brings me back memories of my visit there some time ago. I did most of what you have suggested but not all. As my daughter lives in Sidney maybe I will revisit someday. Thanks for sharing.

Very informative and love that it gives different detailed options. Thank you.

Thank you for this awesome info!

Glad it was helpful Dee 🙂

This is a great post and so helpful in planning my trip. Thank you! One quick question to clarify on the train tip. When you say take a seat on the left, do you mean the left when looking forward to the front of the train? Thanks!

Yes that is what we do Jess, the left when you board the train

Thanks for sharing.

Is there a way I can save this on my iphone?

You can usually save the webpage as a shortcut on your home screen? I am not an iPhone user so I am not sure of the exact instructions. You can also choose print and save as a PDF to your phone.

My husband and I will be in Sydney November 14-18, 2019 (soon!) We are from the States. We have never been to Sydney, so researching lots of stuff now. We will be on a cruise before our stay in Sydney. Anyway, if we choose option #1 or #2 should we reserve anything ahead of time via internet? Like bus tickets? Since we are doing a LOT of touring on foot for 3 weeks, do you think the first itinerary is best for us? We are in good shape, but in our 60s. Thanks for all this wonderful information!

Hi Linda Sorry for the delay, I have been away with little internet access. You don’t need to purchase anything in advance. You can use your credit cards (a different one per person) instead of buying Opal cards now. The first time itinerary would be good. I also suggest checking out Sydney Greeters and also our self-guided bus tours and our walking tours .

Hi, thank u for this informative article 🙂 could u plz tell me if I got this right: so if i want to do the wentworth falls walk, i take the train from sydney to Katoomba Station and if i want to stop at the 3 sisters lookout i take the bus number 686. and then to do the wentworth walk i need to take the same bus back to katoomba and take another bus 685 to North Wentworth Falls. right? 1. how do i know when i have buses? 2. how long does it take from one station to another? 3. is there a lookout u recommend? thanks!

I would probably suggest you take the train to Wentworth Falls and start the walk here. You can take the 685 bus from the station to near the start of the walk. You can check the timetable here https://transportnsw.info/

Once you are done jump on a bus to Katoomba. Before you head out check the NPWS website for any fire warnings. Parks and trails are closed this week due to fire risk and this will probably happen several times over the summer. https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/blue-mountains-national-park

Another shoutout from the U.S. We will be in Sydney in early September of 2020. What type of weather is typical of the Blue Mountains at that time?

Septemeber temperatures are usually lovely and cool about 15-18 degrees Celcius.

Is the train from Sydney to the Blue Mountains in operation due to the fires? If not what is the best way to get to the Blue Mountains?

The train is currently running at least as far as Katoomba and possibly to Mount Victoria unless any new fires pop up. Any changes will be listed under Alerts or Trackwork on this site https://transportnsw.info/alerts/details#/metro-train If trains are not running they are replaced by buses arranged by Transport NSW so you can still visit for the same price. It may just take a tiny bit longer.

Wonderful information and details! Thank you!! We are visiting Sydney from 10-28 to 11-3 this year. I cannot wait to see this area.

Thanks, Debi, I hope you have a wonderful time! The mountain towns will really appreciate your business as they get back on their feet.

Thanks for the detailed info on how to see the Blue Mountains. Can you use your Opal Card on the train from Sydney to Katoomba? What is the typical weather like in early April in the Blue Mountains?

Hi Lynda, you can use your Opal card. April can be cooler but it’s usually lovely walking. Average temperatures are between 17° / 9° Celcius.

Great itinerary! I am planning a trip June 2021. Hopefully this will entail the Winter Festival. How does that affect this itinerary? Should I come early, like Thursday/Friday or stay late, like Sunday? I will assume there will be a huge crowd. Do you have suggestions for lodging?

The Winter Festival is very popular – I would probably come a few days before if you want to do some bushwalking and sightseeing before the festival. What is your budget like? The YHA is great and so is the caravan park at Katoomba Cascades. Alternatively, check out this article https://sydneyexpert.com/where-to-stay-in-the-blue-mountains/

Dear Sir I plan to visit Blue mountain October 2022 with my family. I live near King Cross Station. So i plan to board King Cross Station interchange at Central and then travel to Katoomba Station. Then take a bus or cab to Scenic World and spend 3 hour. My question is how do i return to Central Station via train from Katoomba station. Should i follow the same route or different route Please mention the train route for the return journey

Yes I would suggest you return via the same route.

Hi I will be here in February 2023 and plan on following this guide (assuming that the HOHO is back to 7 days a week). I have a query on one section of the guide which states “1.13 pm – Rejoin the HOHO bus here at Stop 9 and stay on board until you reach Echo Point The bus will pass by NarrowNeck and Cahill Lookout 1.45 pm – Arrive at Echo Point (Stop 7)” These instructions have you going backwards from stop 9 to stop 7 – how is this possible?

Hi Sir, i am planning to visit the blue mountain on 17 December. But since I am on work trip to sydney my chances to visit is but dicey. Does the lyrebird pass recommended by you has free cancellation? I am not able to see any cancellation policy on the link.

Book your pass the day before. They service is not likley to be booked out on Dec 17th.

Thanks for all of this. We have a trip to Dubai and Australia booked for October / November this year. We have already booked our Lyrebird HOHO bus and Scenic World ticket. We are seasoned walkers although in our 70th year, we were struggling to decide which walks to take on at The Blue Mountains. We will certainly take your advice and do Scenic World first and want to do the Cliff Top Walk from stop 6 to the 3 sisters. Another question you have answered is eating places. As we will be catching the 6.23 train from Sydney, we will want to eat something during the day and it will save preparing / buying and carrying food all day. Leura Village seems ideal as we want to do the Prince Henry Cliff Walk / Gordon falls to Olympian Rock as our last walk.

Thank you for this very informative post. I didn’t fancy the planned excursions from Sydney which all seem to include a visit to a place with animals and a river cruise. I’ve had to cancel that booking thankfully!

It’s great, it’s very helpful to me

what a great post! thank you your website is very helpful.

We are traveling from the States to Sydney this coming weekend. Should we purchase any tickets in advance for your Itinerary #1? And if we plan to leave anything out on that itinerary, what would you recommend? And what is the temperature there right now?

The temperature is set to be 27-35 degrees celcius this weekend. If I was going to leave anything out I would probably miss Scenic World – and do the Katoomba Falls hike instead. If you really want to go to scenic world just do the skyway and the railaway and dont worry about the rainforst walk there. Or spend less time in Leura shops.

A scenic day trip to the Blue Mountains from Sydney

The blue mountains has everything you need for a perfect day trip: fresh air, good food and spectacular scenery for the ultimate selfie..

Destination NSW

Destination NSW

A day in the Blue Mountains region, just a short drive from Sydney CBD, is one of the best antidotes to bustling city life, with forested valleys unfolding under the famed blue haze and storybook villages to explore. Climb mountain trails to spy cascading waterfalls and iconic sandstone formations. Fuel up in countryside bakeries or sit and dine with a backdrop of flourishing wilderness, eucalypt forests and rocky inclines. Take the time to browse quaint towns rich in heritage and stop in local galleries, chocolate shops and more. The World Heritage Blue Mountains National Park is also home to the much-photographed sandstone formation, The Three Sisters – so don’t drive home without taking the time to marvel at this fascinating work of nature.

  • Stop at an organic bakery for fresh pastries
  • Hike along a bushland trail at night to see The Three Sisters illuminated
  • Savour handmade chocolates in Leura
  • Admire local art and take a treasure home
  • Dine inside restored heritage eateries

Three Sisters - Sunrise over Jamison Valley in the Blue Mountains

As you drive out of Sydney towards the Blue Mountains, the Great Western Highway climbs beyond Penrith and into the mountains past charming towns including Springwood, Faulconbridge, Wentworth Falls and Leura. Make a stop at Lawson ’s  Black Cockatoo Bakery , which crafts artisan bread with organic stoneground flour, filtered water, sea salt and wild live cultures. Try the pastries with Pepe Saya butter and leave with extra treats for the road.

From Lawson, it's just a 10min drive past pristine bushland to  Wentworth Falls Picnic Area , where you can walk to  Wentworth Falls . Start at Jamison Lookout, which boasts a sweeping vista of Jamison Valley. Head along to the  Wentworth Falls Track  and down some log steps to Wentworth Lookout for waterfall glimpses, then seek out the sidetrack and descend the steps to Fletchers Lookout to get a view of the waterfall from up close.

The town of  Leura  is one of the prettiest in the area, with heritage homes and cool climate gardens. Pop into  Josophan’s Fine Chocolates  for pure Belgian drinking chocolate and handmade truffles, then visit Kate Soady Gallery in Leura Mall, a relaxing space where the Sydney-born artist shows her playful paintings and hand-crafted candles. Kate finds inspiration in the abundant bushland surrounding Leura and her paintings come to life with vibrant banksias, cockatoos and the natural spirit of the Blue Mountains.

Afternoon

From Leura, drive to Blackheath for a scrumptious lunch of Mediterranean share plates cooked on a 150-year-old ironbark-fuelled oven at Ates. Or, for something on the go, head to  The Litle Piggy Deli  for a great selection of pastries, salads and other homemade treats. After lunch, it’s time to take in the panoramic view from nearby  Evans Lookout . Breath in the refreshing mountain air as you peer out towards the sandstone cliff wall of Grose Valley with Govetts Creek winding across the forested floor. From Evans Lookout, it’s easy to set out on the  Grand Canyon Track , a magical trail past waterfalls, rock walls and pristine rainforest brimming with native plants.

If you have time, another top vantage point is  Govetts Leap Lookout  near Blackheath: one of the highest towns above sea level in the Blue Mountains. Govetts Leap is an impressive spot with breathtaking views of the blue gum forested valley, with bottlebrush, acacia and myrtle flowers dotted around. The Bridal Veil Falls is to the right and Pulpit Rock to the front.

One of the first breweries in the Blue Mountains — and now one of the top breweries in Australia —  Mountain Culture Beer Co.  in  Katoomba  is the perfect place to fuel up on gourmet burgers with award-winning small-batch beers for dinner. Chill out inside the restored heritage building, which has housed everything from a dance saloon to a local newspaper, and sip a flight of their much-loved beer with a classic beef burger or a tender buttermilk fried chicken burger.

Once the sun sets, explore the natural beauty of Katoomba with the new  Katoomba Falls Reserve Night-lit Walk . At dusk, follow the trail of LED lights along the 1.3km walk and see illuminated cascades, rock walls and natural formations such as Orphan Rock. At certain vantage points you can spy the  Three Sisters  lit up under the night sky.

It will allow you to see the key sites in this world heritage wilderness and sample a couple of short walks. I have been catching the train to visit the Blue Mountains several times a year for longer than I care to admit, so I have had plenty of time to get this itinerary polished 😉

  • Tick off all the key sites on this Blue Mountains Day Trip

With beautiful lookouts, natural wonders, and charming village town centres, visiting the Blue Mountains is the perfect tonic when the big city gets too loud and busy.

It’s a beautiful spot for a day trip from Sydney and only two hours from Sydney Central Station, making it a great day out on public transport.

Dharug and Gundungurra are the Traditional Owners of the land we are visiting today.

If you have more time, we suggest an overnight stay – or a repeat visit – there is so much to see and do in the Blue Mountains you will want to return.

Tips for planning the perfect Blue Mountains day trip

Getting to the blue mountains by train, how far is it from sydney to katoomba, other sites to consider when you explore the blue mountains, when is the best time to visit the blue mountains.

  • Visit on a weekday if you can – you will be rewarded with fewer people on the trails.
  • Depart Sydney as early as you can – 6am is great, but even the 7am train is a good bet.
  • If you are on a tight budget, then go on Friday, Saturday or Sunday when the ticket will cost you just $8.90 return!
  • Try not to plan too much. Two villages and a couple of short walks are enough for a one day visit.
  • Consider booking the Blue Mountains Explorer bus, it’s a hop on hop off service with 37 stops and helpful staff to answer all your questions.

This is a day trip that is relatively easy to do by train . The journey only takes about 20 minutes longer than driving, and you get to relax all the way.

However, if you prefer to drive, go right ahead. Just expect heavy peak hour traffic if you don’t get away early.

From Sydney to Katoomba is about 120km which takes about 90 minutes by car and two hours by train.

Our starting point for today is Central Station. The biggest train stations in the country train to the mountains can leave from either the suburban or country terminal, so check the signboard or ask a staff member if you have any trouble locating your train.

You can pay for your ticket using your debit or credit card or even pay wave. It will cost you $9.84 in peak hour and $6.88 off-peak. If you travel on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, tickets are capped at $8.90 return.

Stop 1 – Katoomba Town Centre

Katoomba was initially a mining town, and it was not until the coal seam was stripped bare in the late 1800s that it switched gears and became a popular tourist village. By the 1920s, Sydneysiders were visiting in large numbers. There are many buildings from this time, including the historic Carrington Hotel. If time allows, pop in for a cocktail or beer later in the day before you return to Sydney.

Blue Mountains Carrington Hotel

There are also plenty of shops, cafes, and restaurants here. You could easily walk around the whole centre within half an hour. That is, if you can resist having a fossick in the antique stores and browsing the outdoor and hiking shops at the far end of the street.

For now, take a wander along Katoomba Street, buy a coffee and some snacks for your morning tea and perhaps lunch if you would like to picnic.

Then check out the street art on Beverley Place. It runs parallel to Katoomba Street. Make a left when you get to Aldi, and it’s just a few steps past the corner.

Scott Nagy Mural Katoomba

There are more than a dozen murals by local and visiting artists. There are two of our favourites.

Also, just off Katoomba Street, about midway along, is the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre . Follow the sign to Coles Supermarket, and you will find it. If you are not planning on doing much hiking today, you probably have time to make a brief visit here. It is open from 10am every day except for public holidays and, along with a gallery space, has the best gift shop in the mountains.

Antiques on Katoomba Street

Katoomba’s name comes from the Aboriginal word kedumba, meaning shiny, falling waters or water tumbling over hill.

Once you have seen enough of Katoomba town centre, it’s time to head to our next stop. Make your way to the bus at the top of Lurline Street outside the Clarendon Guest House.

Take the bus to Katoomba Falls Reserve , where you can join a lovely short walk to Katoomba Falls. Once you have seen the falls, continue to Katoomba Cascades, which I think is much prettier.

Tip : If you want to save time, you could jump in a taxi for this short drive to our first stop today.

This one day blue mountains itinerary uses local buses

Stop 2 – Katoomba Falls and Katoomba Cascades

This popular walk is quite easy and will reward you with spectacular valley views as the path traces the cliff’s edge for most of its 2km length.

Start your walk at the kiosk in the Prince Henry Reserve opposite the Katoomba Caravan park. The first part of the walk takes you on a lookout over Katoomba Falls. This section is now actually lit at night if you are planning to stay in the mountains for a couple of days.

Katoomba Falls

Continue and you will come to Katoomba Cascades. They do not mark these on Google maps but you can find the right on the track here ( map link )

The route is part of the Prince Henry Cliff Walk, which continues to Leura, however today we will only complete the section to Echo Point.

Map of Prince Henry Cliff Walk

You will probably need about an hour to cover the walk if you include all the photo stops you make at the five lookouts along the way.

Stairs along the Prince Henry Cliff Walk

There are some stairs, but most people with average fitness will find it a breeze. However, if you are not up to it, you can make your way back to the street from the Cascades and take the 686 bus to Echo Point.

Stop 3 – Echo Point Lookout and the Three Sisters

The Three Sisters rock formation at Echo Point is the site all the tour buses come to see. It’s pretty special too. Along with the lookout are a shop and information centre and public toilets.

Three Sisters in Katoomba

There are a couple of viewing platforms at Echo Point. The main one can get quite busy, so make your way to Spooners Lookout, just a few minutes down the path behind the Visitors Centre, and well worth the detour for a private view. The dramatic views over the valley to Mount Solitary are awe-inspiring.

Why are they called the Three Sisters?

Why are they called the Three Sisters? One legend suggests the rocks where three beautiful women were turned to stone by their father, Tyawan , who was protecting them from danger. He changed himself into a lyrebird but lost his power before he could return to human form, so he remained a lyrebird and they remained rock.  You can read about this and an alternate version here .

Several hiking trails depart from behind the visitors’ centre. Even if you do not plan on hiking, take some time to walk down to Honeymoon Bridge and onto the first of the Three Sisters.

Walk to Katoomba's three sisters

Making your way down the stairs and onto the bridge of the first of the Three Sisters Katoomba

Continue back to Echo Point Road, where you will find the 695 Bus stop that will take you to our next stop in Leura.

Detour : If you’re feeling energetic, you can also hike further down to the valley floor. You reach the valley at the bottom of the Three Sisters via the Giant Stairway . This involves walking through bushland and climbing down 998 steps carved into the rock face. You join the Federal Pass hiking trail from the base, which will take you to the Scenic railway, the steepest railway in the world, and back up to the top of the valley and the Scenic World attraction.

Blue Mountains Katoomba walks

On this walk, you would retrace your steps from this morning’s Prince Henry Cliff Walk; however, you are at the bottom of the valley this time. It would be best if you allowed yourself plenty of time to complete this detour. It will probably mean you have less or no time to explore the village of Leura later today.

Stop 4 – Leuralla Gardens and Olympian Rock Lookout

Jump off the bus at Leuralla on Olympian Parade. For a change of pace, particularly if the weather is not being kind, I suggest you stay on the bus until you get to Bygone Beauties.

Leuralla is also a fine Art déco home and one of the finest properties open to the public in the Blue Mountains. The Heritage-listed home was inspired by the designs of Frank Lloyd Wright and is shown its original state.

CherryDell Leura Garden

Surrounding the home are 12 hectares of garden, which offer something year-round but are stunning in spring.

If historic homes are not your cup of tea, head straight across the road and take in the views of the valley as you walk between Elysian Rock Lookout and Olympian Rock.

Lunch – move directly to Stop 6 if you fancy a sit-down lunch.

If you would like a nice cafe lunch and some browsing around the village shops, then head back to Leura Village. There are plenty of dining options to choose from, the Bunker is my favourite.

You can hop on the 696 bus towards Leura Mall or choose to walk, it’s a flat, simple walk to Leura village and will take you past some of the most lovely homes and gardens in the mountains.

Stop 5 – The Pool of Siloam and Lyrebird Dell

This is my favourite walk in Leura. The path is a bit overgrown in spots, and the walk is a little harder than this morning’s, but it has two rewards that make the effort worthwhile.

Map Lyrebird Dell and Pool of Siloam Walk Blue Mountains

You make your way south along Olympian Parade to Gordon Falls Reserve. The track starts from the reserve. Follow the signs to the Pool of Siloam. It’s a very short 450m to reach this peaceful spot.

The Pool of Siloam is a small but beautiful waterfall in the Blue Mountains

The Pool of Siloam in the Blue Mountains National Park is an oasis for wildlife lovers with many species to be spotted, including kookaburras, galahs, cockatoos, and occasionally echidnas.

It’s a further 500m to Lyrebird Dell. On the way to Lyrebird Dell you will pass a cave with some old picnic tables. The cave is a significant site for the traditional owners of this land.

Lyrebird Dell Blue Mountains

The dell is a small clearing surrounded by dense rainforest that is supposedly home to lyrebirds. These birds were named after their call because they sound like musical instruments. They are timid, so don’t expect any close encounters unless you get lucky. We have yet to spot one here but are assured there is usually a good number.

From Lyrebird Dell back to Leura Station is a 1.7km walk or a 4-minute taxi ride if you are too tired to continue.

All up, the walk from Leuralla via these two stops and back to Leura Mall is 2.8km, and I estimate it will take you about 1hr and 20 minutes to complete, about 40 minutes walking time and the rest taking it all in!

Stop 6 – Leura Mall

Leura Mall is the main street in Leura and the location of Leura Train Station, making it a great place to finish up our day in the mountains.

Leura Mall Blue Mountains

The street itself is gorgeous in spring when the middle strip is lined with trees in bloom. If you want to reward yourself with a drink and some delicious eats before the train ride home, stop at the Bunker, one of the most popular places to eat in Leura. Trains back to Sydney leave hourly at 19 minutes past the hour until at least 8.19 pm.

Leura Garage restaurant Blue Mountains

We have saved all these major sights on our Google maps so you can plan your day in the mountains.

We think a day in the Blue Mountains is the perfect city escape. If you don’t fancy doing it yourself, there are several Blue Mountains tours to choose from that depart both Sydney and Katoomba.

  • Scenic World with the Scenic Skyway is a popular attraction that offers breathtaking views as it glides over the Jamison Valley.
  • Wentworth Falls , which can be reached by bus or taxi from Wentworth Falls station, is also a brilliant choice if you fancy a full day of hiking.
  • Blackheath and Govett Leap Lookout offer panoramic views over the Grose Valley. Take the train from Sydney to Blackheath. You can walk from here or jump on a local bus to the National Park Visitors’ Centre. The sandstone cliffs and views toward Pulpit Rock are incredible.
  • Leura Cascades is a lovely picnic spot that has recently partially reopened after flood damage.

Scenic Skyway Blue Mountains

A visit to the Blue Mountains is a great choice year-round. From autumn to spring, the crisp mountain air is perfect for hiking and in summer, the temperatures on the valley floor provide respite.

Winter sees several festivals, including the popular Yuletide (Christmas in July) events. This is the perfect time to rug up and take in the crisp mountain air. In summer, the cooler mountain temperatures can provide a respite from the high temperatures in Sydney.

Weekends in spring and autumn get quite busy as Sydneysiders head up to enjoy the changing colours and stunning floral displays, so book early if you plan to stay overnight.

We’ll say goodbye to our new furry friends at the zoo and head for the Blue Mountains. Your 1 Day Blue Mountains Tour would not be complete without a visit to Echo Point to admire the iconic Three Sisters. Be sure to bring your camera to capture the beautiful scenery!

Next, we head towards Scenic World, where you can ride the world’s steepest Scenic Railway, the Scenic Skyway or the Cableway (rides at your own expense). Alternatively, you can enjoy a self-guided hike along the Prince Henry Cliff Walk! There are a number of lookouts to admire including the Orphan Rock Lookout, Katoomba Falls Lookout, and more. This beginner-friendly walk along the clifftops is the perfect opportunity to experience unparalleled views of the Grampians.

The tour will conclude at Homebush Bay, where you can purchase a ferry ticket (own cost) and enjoy a relaxing cruise back to Sydney Harbour!

Anderson’s gets an A+ for an absolutely spectacular day. The customer service was top-notch and Robert, out guide, was the best. Anderson’s was very accommodating and kept our very large group together even though we booked separately and were split into different groups. Quite an accomplishment at 7 am!

Robert was absolutely fantastic. Charming, engaging, and funny. Lots of history, stories, and jokes. Some would say that Robert is the 17th best tour guide in the world… but I say that he is #1.

Thanks, Robert. Your friends at Legion Rugby.

Anthony K. July 2024

Our tour guide was fantastic and chose the right time to visit views at the best time. Restroom stops were well timed and stops for a late breakfast were magnificent. Sydney Zoo was the best zoo that I have visited. The ferry trip back to Sydney was amazing and the rides at Scenic World were very different. My 5-year-old grandson loved the day.

Helen C July 2024

A great day of sight-seeing with a wonderful tour guide (Steve). The coach was also comfortable for our day’s adventure. We had a beautiful day visiting the Blue Mountains and visiting several lookouts. The Katoomba falls were spectacular, as well. We ran across a flock of cockatoos and enjoyed watching them. Steve was always pointing out things for us to check out and his commentary on the area was an added bonus. Loved hearing about the area from a true local. The day’s activities were well-planned and lunch was very enjoyable. We also enjoyed the mixed modes of transportation for the tour – bus rides to the landmarks and a ferry ride back on the river. It was a full day of fun!

Boardthepets June 2024

From the minute we got on board to the minute the trip finished we had a fantastic time. Rin was our guide and she made the day extra special with her exceptional knowledge, banter and kindness.

The views were absolutely spectacular and Rin planned the stops to make sure we got the most out of the day.

From booking the trip, to reminders and on the actual day, Andersons were great. I would definitely recommend to everyone. It was a stand out day in our family holiday.

Kirsty T June 2024

Kunal was one of the most invested and articulate guides I have ever had. He educated us on social, economic and political matters in Australia as well as the flora and fauna.

We enjoyed his insights into the country of Australia!

Wisewomyn June 2024

Amazing experience with our tour guide Adam! He was very entertaining and we got to see so many amazing views in the Blue mountains and went to Featherdale!

Madison M March 2024

My husband and I took all day tour to Blue Mountains with Anderson’s Tours. Our guide Mark was very informative and fun guy to tour with. He was very knowledgeable of the local history and places to go and see. The bus held 20 people and was very clean and comfortable. All ticket fees were included in the price of this tour so all you need to pay for is snacks/drinks at a couple of stops we went to. I have to extend a special thanks to Mark for going above and beyond in helping my husband who has mobility issues and was struggling keeping up with the group. Without his assistance, my husband would have not been able to safely enjoy everything this tour had to offer.

Snubes March 2024

We had a great time with our driver/guide, Gabe. The weather was not as cooperative, but he made some adjustments, and we were able to see some of the blue mountain sights. We even got to see a couple of lyrebirds in the rainforest. It was sad that our tram ride was completely in the clouds, so we couldn’t see the falls. He drove to another waterfall just so we could see one and get pictures. He also doubled back after lunch to try to get the Vista view of the blue mountains, and we were able to get a peek between the clouds. Gabe narrated our ride with interesting stories and aboriginal music. This trip was awesome, and definately worth the time.

denise March 2024

Rin was a fun, thoughtful and professional tour guide. She was THE BEST tour guide we have ever had in all these years actually. It was foggy at the Three Sisters and she went out of her way to return some time later to see if it would clear as she knew we all ( on the tour) came to see that! It finally cleared for about 10 minutes and you could hear our tour and all the other tourists cheering!

LovesNewHampshire March 2024

This was an amazing day trip we took with Anderson tours from Sydney. Our tour guide Adam was fantastic. He carefully thought through our schedule of things to see and had us there ahead of the crowds which made the experience even better for us. Adam was informative, funny, cared about his group getting the best experience possible and he played great music in the bus!! The cost of the tour was well worth it, we got to spend ample time seeing the Blue Mountains National Park, Three Sisters, taking the gondolas and cable car, had a great lunch at The Bunker Restaurant, to the Featherdale Wildlife Park and finally a ferry ride back to Sydney Harbour.

Janet C March 2024

My husband and I had the most amazing time! Our guide, Steve, was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful during the entire day. He went above and beyond and helped us have the best experience at every single stop. He even took us to some bonus spots! We can’t recommend this tour or thank him enough! It was a day full of beautiful views, great information, and incredible experiences such as riding the steepest railway in the world and feeding kangaroos. 10/10!

Katie B. August 2023

The guides were great. I had Bob for most of the trip and then KG for Featherdale who gave me a personal guided tour of the sanctuary after I was inadvertently transferred to the bus that was going to the zoo. I had no idea the Blue Mountains were as impressive as they are (much like the Grand Canyon but more green). And, Scenic World was neat with the world’s steepest railway. Featherdale has mostly indigenous animals, so much better than Taronga Zoo which I had visited the day before.

Bruce S. August 2023

Bob was so great, he drove us to alternate locations when the fog and mist obstructed views. Bob was friendly, and very informative – and it seemed like he had great relationships with the attraction operators. He made sure we all had a great experience

Mike W. August 2023

Our Guide K.G , really did make the tour worthwhile. Wealth of knowledge throughout the “entire” trip. Fully engaged from 1st greet to send off on the Ferry home. She was able to modify the schedule to ensure we were able to see all we wanted to while we negotiated the fog and rainy moments. Would highly recommend this tour group company, and will definitely consider it again on my next visit

J A August 2023

This tour was well organized, on time and stopped at amazing sights throughout the Blue Mountains. Our tour guide, Bob, was incredible. He read the weather patterns and made choices on the sequence of sights so that we had the best views. And we had a tricky day of weather so that was no small task. He also shared great local and Aboriginal knowledge.

Stacey S. August 2023

Great experience! Highly recommend going on small group tour as it wasn’t crowded and was very well organised with itinerary of the day. Our tour guide Mark was fantastic! Very informative on history of Australia & sights on way up to Blue Mountains. Was able to answer any questions with ease and passion. Thank you Mark for showing us amazing views on a few mountain outlooks. The highlight for us was going out to the 3 Sisters as we were 3 sisters on our weekend away to Sydney!

Sabrina D. April 2023

The tour guide was very knowledgeable and made the trip interesting. The views were fantastic. The food that was provided was very nice. It was nice to reach the blue Mountains early before the rush time when other big coaches arrive. Also the smaller coach allowed us to go to other lookouts that the large buses could not access. First class service all the way. I would highly recommend Anderson’s tours.

Alan B. April 2023

Robert and the Anderson company was very accommodating. Our bus had a door issue and they immediately remedied the situation. Robert did everything he could to make our trip amazing even with the uncooperative weather. The look out point we finally found without clouds was great. Robert made sure we saw the mountains. Scenic world was fun. Lunch was great. Zoo was fun. Loved seeing the koalas and kangaroos. The ferry home was great. All steps of the way were taken care of and Robert made the day very enjoyable. You can tell he his loves his home of Australia and has an engaging way of sharing it with travelers. I highly recommend this tour. He went out of his way to make sure we had a great experience.

Allison C. April 2023

Mike was an awesome driver. Very knowledgeable and lotsa dad jokes to keep us amused. Beautiful trip through the Blue Mountain Park with lunch, Featherdale Wildlife Park & Ferry ride to end it all. Well worth the money. Leaving early beats the crowds, though you may want to buy some pastries the night before.

Alex Riette February 2023

We would like to start by saying Robert is by far one of the best tour guides we have ever had! He is very knowledgeable of all the areas we visited. Super nice guy! Even though the weather was bad, he made the day very enjoyable. We really enjoyed the world’s steepest train ride and the boardwalk through the rainforest. It is a very well organized tour. Highly recommended!

Dan Luci February 2023

Excellent day with Steve who was our guide and driver. Funny and interesting commentary and he went above and beyond to ensure we saw all the sites even with the varying and challenging weather. It was a very full and exhausting day, finishing off with the spectacular ferry ride to Darling Harbour. Thank you for a great day!

Blue Mountains Day Trip from Sydney | A guide to plan a perfect day tour

Estimated reading time: 7 minutes

For a number of decades, the Blue Mountains day trip is considered fundamental to Sydney tourism due to many reasons and the most popular day trip from Sydney . The Blue Mountains are surrounded by the most scenic alpine scenery in Australia. It is located only 100km towards the west of Sydney. The iconic wildlife is featured by invaluable fauna & flora species. The stunning rock formations like Three Sisters & Jenolan Caves are visible all around. Meanwhile, this region is full of numerous adrenaline-filling activities like Scenic World rides & bushwalks. All these events include a single-day trip. So, further pieces of evidence are not wanted to prove that the Blue Mountains day trip is the best choice for an effective holidaying plan.

Whenever you watch this picturesque mountainside from a distance, you can see a cyan-blue haze blanketing the whole region. That’s why it got the name “the Blue Mountains”.  Thousands of visitors are nostalgically waiting to have this unforgettable Blue Mountains day trip experience almost despite the season of the year. But the largest crowds can be seen in the summer from December to February.

Actually, you can reach there in several methods.

Table of Contents

How to Visit the Blue Mountains?

If you are planning a Blue Mountains day trip, it may be more effective & time-saving when you use a car or air flight.

Train Journey

It approximately takes about 1.5- 2 hours to Blackheath or Katoomba from Sydney Central Station, if you go by train. 6.23, 6.53, 7.23, 8.18, 8.50, & 9.18 am services are better for a weekday trip. However, the 7.23 am express train is the best choice as it reaches Katoomba around 10.32 am.

The 6.24, 7.24, 7.54, and 8.24 am services may be better options for weekend Blue Mountains day trips.  It is an added benefit that, the train services head up to the mountains on weekdays & public holidays.  But they may be crowded. Therefore, weekdays are better for a relaxed journey, getting close to the local life of Australia.

The cost of tickets differs according to the day of the week as well as the time of the day. They cost about $8.69 during peak times such as 7.00-9.00 am & 4-6.30 pm. The costs of off-peak times are usually around $6.08.

Self-Drive to the Blue Mountains

The easiest means of transport is by car. It takes only 50 minutes to Lapstone from Sydney. If you follow the signs from the city, you can simply reach Parramatta . However, the M4 motorway starts at Strathfield & will take you to Lapstone in the Blue Mountains.  Although the most-visited tourist destinations like Leura & Katoomba are nearer, it would take about 90 minutes to reach the Blue Mountains.

Another alternative path is available from Bell’s Line of Road, via Mount Tomah & Bell, towards Mount Victoria. You can witness the panoramic scene of Blue Mountains National Park while driving with your favourites.

You can decide on your self-drive itinerary according to your desire. If you are fond of less walking & many photographs, you can follow one path. If you like long walks, there is another path. The last option is for those who are taking elders & young kids with them.

It’s better if you can take warm, rain & wind jackets, extra clothes, enclosed walking shoes, sunscreen, hats & sunglasses & some snacks for trouble-less self-drive.

Blue Mountains Tours

If you want to get a better day trip experience, you must hire a reliable travel agent. “ Blue Mountains Tours ” is the pioneer travel assistant service that guides you to every nook & corner of this area. It is the best option to make your Blue Mountains day trip more effective.

The Blue Mountains Scenic Flight.

Now visitors from Sydney have another great opportunity to reach the Blue Mountains by helicopter. This lifetime helicopter experience costs just $850.00. You can get on board at Sydney Harbor. Then the flight will take you over all the panoramic views from Sydney to the Blue Mountains.

All the attractions such as Three Sisters, Katoomba, Megalong & Jamison Valley, & Warragamba Catchment area include in this simple 90 minutes flight. You would also be amazed by the sceneries of Sydney Harbor Bridge & Opera House during the return.

There are so many extra advantages of Blue Mountains Scenic flights. You can get the same great view no matter wherever your seat is. The refreshments are provided before & after the flight. Besides, the passengers are provided informative headsets all along the journey.

What to Do & Where to Visit?

These are the topmost attractions in your Blue Mountains day trip.

Visit Three Sisters Lookout.

Three Sisters may be the number one natural attraction of your Blue Mountains day trip. This marvellous rock formation consists of an iconic group of sandstone rocks, formed due to recurrent land erosion. Moreover, the Aboriginal legends such as these are 3 sisters, turned to stones by their father also intensify their historic significance.

Three Sisters Blue Mountains

There is only a short distance from Katoomba train station to get there. Normally, whenever you’ve got there by bus, you can see the whole region is very crowded with flocks of tourists. But, if you expect an uninterrupted view of Three Sisters & Katoomba falls, you can access Eagle Hawk Lookout by car. Cahills lookout provides a full view of Megalong Valley. No matter how foggy some days are, you can easily capture a great photo of its surroundings.

Rides in Scenic World.

This is an incomparably wonderful experience you can get at the summit of Blue Mountains . This is the most impressive adventure activity of your Blue Mountains day trip. Scenic world rides provide a boardwalk of 2.4km elevation through the ancient rainforest.

You can have a scenic world experience by railway, skyway, or cableway as you desire. The itinerary is fallen across the Jamison Valley, providing stunning views of the quaint hill towns of Leura & Katoomba.

Scenic World, Blue Mountains

If you wish for a relaxed ride you must avoid the heavy queues of mid-morning. So, it would be more effective if you can reach there earlier or later in the afternoon.

If you’ve been there in a peak season like summer, it’s wise to pre-purchase entry tickets for Scenic world.

Blue Mountains Hikes.

Here we discuss the most convenient hikes for a Blue Mountains day trip, which can be completed within a few hours.

Prince Henry Cliff Walk, Leura.

Here we discuss only a 500m section of the entire hike trail between Elysian Rock & Olympian Rock. This hike provides astounding panoramas of Jamison Valley, letting you enjoy the solemnity of the environment. This section of the walk takes about 30 minutes. However, some bushwalking experience is necessary for this hike.

Nature Track Wentworth Falls.

A mild physical challenge for your kids. It is a 3.3km loop, which takes about 2 hours the walk. You can stride across the stunning views of mountain creeks, fern-filled gullies, ironstone cliffs & marvellous Empress Canyon. Therefore, it is a walk of everything.

Wentworth Falls in Blue Mountains Day Trips

Jenolan Caves

Jenolan Caves is the most popular hike on the Blue Mountains day trip. Besides, it is among the most visited cave systems in Australia. This incredible cave system consists of pure underground rivers & magnificent limestone structures. This complex contains over 11 limestone caves.

Where to Get Lunch in the Blue Mountains?

There are several restaurants all along your Blue Mountains day trip from Sydney routes to refresh you with yummy dishes, quelling the fatigue of travel.

Picnic Lunch at Leura Cascade Picnic Area.

You can easily strive for some shade to get your homemade lunch at Leura grounds. The mellow breezes & cascading waters would chill your hike exhaustion. If you expect some change in your typical lunch there are several cafes around Leura Village. There, you can experience a modern Australian menu with a French influence. Solitary Restaurants, Silk’s Brasserie & Leura Garage are the best choices.

Book a Table at Hydro Majestic Hotel.

Hydro Majestic Hotel is a refreshing interval for your adventurous combo rides. It is located just 5 miles ahead of Katoomba Scenic World. This deco-style hotel provides an unforgettable food experience with the most unique & gastronomic dishes in the region. So, don’t forget to reserve your table.

So, buckle up & get ready for a Blue Mountain day trip from Sydney in your next summer vacation. Welcome to the domain of adventure-seekers.

While visiting Sydney, Australia, taking a Blue Mountains day trip was at the top of our must-do list. The Blue Mountains National Park lies just west of the city and is easily accessible by train, car or tour. The spectacular nature retreat features scenic landscapes, picturesque waterfalls, sheer cliffs and a network of hiking trails.

Additionally, an aerial cable car and steep railway at Scenic World allow park guests to enjoy unique experiences. Because of the numerous Blue Mountains attractions, Sydney day tours are popular excursions from the city. With so much to see and do, how do you plan to visit the Blue Mountains in a day?

We carefully considered our options for a Blue Mountains trip from Sydney – from what to see in Blue Mountains to whether or not we should take a tour to the best way to get there from Sydney. We are sharing what we learned (and our detailed Blue Mountains Itinerary) to help other travelers plan their perfect One-Day Blue Mountains Australia Tour.

How to Plan a Blue Mountains Day Trip from Sydney

Blue Mountains valley view near Sydney, Australia

When creating a Blue Mountains trip plan, these are the most important factors to consider:

  • What to see in Blue Mountains NSW?
  • Self-Guided or Organized Tours to Blue Mountains from Sydney?
  • How to travel to Blue Mountains from Sydney?
  • Get organized for your Vacation to Australia by using our  Trip Planning Printables !

Deciding Which Places to Visit in Blue Mountains

With many Blue Mountains places to visit, you’ll need to decide what to include in a Sydney one-day trip. In addition, you also need to consider what kind of experiences you want and how much you want to spend. It is free to enter most of the park – including top Blue Mountain hiking trails and the best viewpoints – but there is a cost for tours and Scenic World attractions.

While a multitude of sights appealed to us (and I’m the kind of person who always wants to do everything!), it simply isn’t feasible to partake in all the park attractions on a Sydney one-day tour. The main reason we wanted to visit the Blue Mountains was to escape the city and immerse ourselves in nature. On our trip, we decided to limit our Blue Mountains sightseeing to the natural aspects of the park.

At the end of the article, we include detailed information on top attractions and tips on where to go in Blue Mountains and what to see.

Blue Mountains 1-Day Tour: Organized or DIY?

After determining which Blue Mountain sights to include in your one-day itinerary, you need to decide whether you want to take one of the organized Sydney day tours or plan your own Blue Mountains self-tour.

There are many benefits to joining an organized Blue Mountains tour bus excursion. The obvious advantage is that tours require little-to-no planning. Tour participants won’t need to sort the details of getting to Blue Mountains or wonder how much time to allot at each sight. And, without having to worry about the details of a Blue Mountains one-day trip, guests can simply sit back and enjoy the day.

On the other hand, there are a few reasons you might not want to join an organized tour from Sydney to Blue Mountains. It’s important to consider cost, limited time at sights and group dynamics before booking a tour.

We weighed the pros and cons of the organized Sydney, Australia day trips, focusing on our personal interests. Many of the Sydney day tours package together the best Blue Mountains tourist attractions with other nearby sights and activities, which means the experience will include much more than a visit to the park.

However, for us, hiking along the Blue Mountains walking tracks was one of the top reasons we wanted to visit Blue Mountains – so if we were going to take a tour, we needed to find one that allowed time for bush walks.

At the end of the post, we include detailed information on the best Blue Mountain tours from Sydney.

How To Get To Blue Mountains?

If foregoing the organized Blue Mountains Australia tour option, visitors need to figure out how to go to Blue Mountains from Sydney on their own. Self-driving allows for the most flexibility in planning a trip to the national park. However, for us, we prefer not to drive when abroad – especially in countries where they drive on the left side of the road. Fortunately, there is a viable Blue Mountains public transport option: the train to Blue Mountains from Sydney. To go to Blue Mountains by train takes about 2 hours and costs about $10 AUD each way. Note: There is no Sydney to Blue Mountains bus.

See specific details on how to get to Blue Mountains by train at the end of the article.

Our Perfect Blue Mountains Day Trip

Blue Mountains National Park viewpoint from Prince Henry Cliff Walk near Sydney, Australia

After thoroughly researching our options, we decided to dedicate our one-day Blue Mountains trip to nature and bush walking. We debated between booking an organized Blue Mountains day tour that focused on hiking or planning our own trip via train from Sydney to Blue Mountains. In our research, we discovered a hiking trail that we could easily complete on our own: the Prince Henry Cliff Walk.

Highlights of the trail are the stellar viewpoints and tumbling waterfalls – and although it is technically a one-way trail, we discovered a way to create a loop so that we didn’t have to backtrack. The Blue Mountains hike was the exact nature experience we wanted: incredible scenery, but not overly strenuous. Although the Sydney day tours to Blue Mountains offer a good value, we determined it was best for us to plan a DIY Blue Mountains day trip from Sydney by train.

Detailed Blue Mountains Day Trip Itinerary

Creating our own Blue Mountains one-day itinerary from Sydney, meant we had to sort all of the excursion details on our own. Our Blue Mountains in One Day Itinerary outlines everything you need to know – from how to get to Blue Mountains from Sydney to the must-see viewpoints to how to coordinate your timeline for the day. Follow in our footsteps or use the information as a guide to plan your own ideal trip from Sydney to Blue Mountains.

Getting to Blue Mountains via the Sydney to Katoomba Train

Planning a Blue Mountains day trip by train is actually quite simple! The Blue Mountains Train Line (from Central Station to Katoomba Station), which is part of the Intercity Trains Network, covers the distance from Sydney to Blue Mountains in about two hours. To make the most of your trip, hop on a Central Station to Blue Mountains Train that departs early in the morning.

We took the morning Blue Mountain Express Train, not because it’s a big time-saver (it’s only 15 minutes quicker), but because it got us to Katoomba by mid-morning. The day of our Blue Mountains day trip, we arrived at Sydney Central Station about 20 minutes before departure – and the train was already at the platform. Right on schedule, the train slowly chugged out of the city toward Parramatta and then on from Paramatta to the Blue Mountains.

Arrive in Katoomba

Katoomba, which has a population of about 8,000 residents, is the charming main town in Blue Mountains. Many of the top places to see in Blue Mountains NP are accessible from Katoomba, which makes it a great starting point for a day of exploration.

To get from the Katoomba Station to Blue Mountains Park, it is an easy 2km (1.2 mile) downhill walk along Katoomba Street. The street, which is lined with tourist shops, cafes and eateries, provides a direct path south from the station to the national park.

Getting from Katoomba to Blue Mountains National Park

From Katoomba Station, walk south on Katoomba Street. Pass Echoes Boutique Hotel and Restaurant, then merge onto Panorama Drive, which curves to the east. At Echo Point Road, turn south and enter the park at Echo Point Lookout.

Top Tip: Make a stop at a grocery store on Katoomba Street to pick up hiking snacks and items for a picnic lunch. We like Woolworth’s, which is located on Waratah Street, just west of Katoomba Street. There’s also an ALDI in Katoomba, just across the street.

Katoomba to Blue Mountains Bus: The Blue Mountains Explorer Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus transports passengers from Katoomba to area attractions, including Echo Point, Scenic World and Leura Cascades. More info about this bus at the end of the post.

Take in the Views at Echo Point Lookout

Three Sisters rock formation from Echo Point at Blue Mountains National Park in Sydney, Australia

Offering panoramic views of the park’s most iconic landscape, Echo Point Lookout is a must for every visitor of Blue Mountains NP. Ranking as the “Best Lookouts Blue Mountains,” the spacious Echo Point platform provides stunning views of the famous Three Sisters rock formation and Jamison Valley.

One level lower than Echo Point is Queen Elizabeth Lookout, which allows for an accessible secondary vantage point. In addition to the informational plaques found at the railings, visitors can obtain Blue Mountains info at the on-site Echo Point Information Center.

Blue Mountains Hikes from Echo Point

On a Hike in the Blue Mountains, Sydney, Australia

Many Katoomba hikes commence at Echo Point Lookout. Hikers can hop on a trail that travels west to complete the Blue Mountains waterfall walk to Katoomba Falls (and on to Scenic World). Ambitious trekkers can take the Katoomba walking tracks that lead south to the Three Sisters and down to the valley floor. Viewpoint-seekers – like ourselves – will want to find the Katoomba walks trail to the east, Prince Henry Cliff Walk, that follows the mountain’s edge to Leura Cascades and beyond.

Top Tip : A Blue Mountains hiking map can be purchased from the Echo Point Information Center. We opted, however, to use the Blue Mountains tourist map included in the free magazine (available at the entrance of the info center). It was not the best Blue Mountains walking map and shouldn’t be used for more difficult Katoomba bush walks. However, it served its purpose for our day of hiking Blue Mountains Australia. Serious hikers should consider purchasing a trail book , which includes a complete map of Blue Mountains NSW.

Gaze at Three Sisters Blue Mountains

First of Three Sisters rock formations at Blue Mountains NP NSW in Sydney, Australia

The Three Sisters is the most recognizable rock formation in the national park – and a must-see when you visit Blue Mountains from Sydney. Thousands of years of erosion paired with aboriginal fables make Three Sisters a landmark destination in the national park.

According to the indigenous legend, three sisters were turned to stone when they wanted to marry men outside their tribe. Consequently, a battle occurred between the two tribes and the only elder who had the power to return the sisters to human form was killed in the fight. Thus, the sisters remain stone for eternity.

Blue Mountains Bush Walks: Three Sisters Walk and the Giant Stairs Blue Mountains

From Echo Point, there is a short .8km (1/2 mile) Three Sisters Walk that allows visitors to access the first ‘sister’ via the Honeymoon Bridge. Hikers can loop back to Echo Point or opt to continue to the valley floor via the Giant Stairway. Detailed information on both of these hikes is provided at the end of the post.

Three Sisters to Elysian Rock via Prince Henry Cliff Walk

Total Length: 4.5km (2.8 miles)   |  Difficulty: Easy to Moderate  |  Total Time: 3-4 hours

When we were planning our trip to Blue Mountains in a day, we were seeking out the best hikes in Blue Mountains – and we found it on the trek from Three Sisters to Elysian Rock via the Prince Henry Cliff Walk. Most of the natural path is enveloped in lush forest. Hugging the edge of the cliff, the easy-to-moderate trail offers more than 20 incredible lookout points. The entire length of the Prince Henry Cliff Walk is about 7km, of which we walked about 4.5km from Three Sisters to Elysian Rock, via Leura Cascades. Below, we break down the hike into sections.

Bush Walk from Three Sisters to Leura Cascades

Leura Cascades tumbling waterfall at Blue Mountains National Park in Sydney, Australia

Length: 3km (1.9 miles)  |  Difficulty: Easy to Moderate  |  Time: 1-2 hours

From Echo Point Lookout, the Prince Henry Cliff Walk to Leura Cascades begins behind the Echo Point Info Center. The trail joins the Three Sisters Walking Track, which leads to an up-close view of the first ‘sister’ and the top of the Giant Stairway. If time allows, make the out-and-back detour to the lookout point and take the stairs down to the bridge and cross over to the iconic rock formation.

Follow the signs for the Prince Henry Cliff Walk, which roughly follows the ridgeline road, Cliff Drive. The dirt trail is enveloped in a forest of eucalyptus and other natural vegetation. Listen for the shriek of the Wild Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos as they fly overhead and above the vast valley. From the trail, there are numerous lookout points, each offering breathtaking views of the valley. We recommend venturing out to each viewpoint, but be certain not to miss Burrabarroo Lookout (one of our favorites!) and Bridal Veil Lookout for an awesome vantage point of the waterfall.

Top Tip : Wooden benches are found sporadically along the path. Great for a rest, but if you packed a picnic lunch, we suggest waiting to eat until you get to Burrabarroo Lookout.

Blue Mountains Waterfalls: Leura Cascades and Bridal Veil Falls

View of Bridal Veil Falls at lookout point in Blue Mountains NP in Sydney, Australia

The gently flowing Leura Falls Creek tumbles down stairstep rocks before streaming over the cliff’s edge into the valley below, creating what is better known as Bridal Veil Falls. Follow the path along the stream and across bridges for the best views of the Leura Cascades.

Top Tip : At Leura Cascades, there is a picnic area, bathroom facilities, parking and an Explorer Bus Hop-On-Hop-Off bus stop.

Leura Cascades to Elysian Rock

Blue Mountains NP viewpoint in NSW

Length: 1.5km (.9 miles)  |  Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Just past the falls, hike along the Prince Henry Cliff Walk to the Bridal Veil View path. Take this detour for the absolute best viewpoint of the Bridal Veil Falls, then retrace your steps to reconnect with the main path. Shortly after the Tarpeian Rock lookout, the Olympian Rock Lookout is not too far – and the views are spectacular! Hiking on from Olympian Rock, you will arrive at Elysian Rock Lookout in less than 5 minutes.

Top Tip : We continued for another 10 minutes on the Blue Mountains hiking trail past Elysian Rock to Gordon Falls Lookout, but the view of the waterfall was a bit disappointing – especially after Leura Falls. On the other hand, this portion of the Prince Henry Trail was vacant of people, so if you are seeking a bit of solitude in the forest, you might want to continue on to Gordon Falls.

Conclude Your Blue Mountains Hike in Leura

From Elysian Rock Lookout (or Gordon Falls), make your way up to Olympian Parade; turn left (west) and walk to Leura Mall. Turn right (north) and follow the pleasant residential street for about 2km (1.2 miles) into the center of Leura, where there are a handful of shops, cafes and restaurants. At the top of the street is Leura Station.

Travel from Blue Mountains to Sydney

From the Leura Train Station, hop on the next Blue Mountains to Sydney train. We were aiming to be on the 3:54pm train – the last train before peak pricing begins – but arrived at the station earlier than we anticipated…and just in time for the 3:24pm train back to Sydney.

Blue Mountains to Sydney by Train (2023)

  • Train Departure Time from Leura Station to Sydney Central: 3:24pm
  • Arrival Time to Sydney Central Station : 5:21pm
  • Blue Mountains to Sydney Train Fare : $9.31 AUD
