En el Pacífico Norte, el Golfo de Papagayo, Tamarindo, Playa Hermosa, Playa Dominical, Sámara y Nosara son extensas playas con importantes desarrollos turísticos ideales para vacaciones familiares con muchos atractivos para los niños; Cerca del Pacífico Central descubrirás hermosas playas como Playa Blanca y Manuel Antonio donde las parejas encontrarás el escenario perfecto para tu luna de miel. Hacia el sur las playas de Dominical, Uvita y Ballena son importantes destinos ecoturísticos. En la costa caribeña se encuentran playas de arena blanca como Cahuita, Puerto Viejo y Gandoca donde el mar es cristalino.

Las áreas naturales protegidas representan el 31% del territorio nacional. Aquí, hay majestuosos bosques primarios y secundarios, bosques nubosos como la Reserva Monteverde, Santa Elena y San Gerardo de Dota, extensos bosques lluviosos como el Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo, Sarapiquí, Parque Nacional Corcovado, Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio , el único bosque lluvioso de transición. del Parque Nacional Carara, o el bosque tropical seco del Parque Nacional Santa Rosa en el Pacífico Norte.

Este verde infinito también recorre extensas llanuras como las de La Fortuna, donde se eleva el Volcán Arenal, o las del Caribe Norte donde los ríos fluyen en meandros arrolladores hasta llegar al mar . Biodiversidad

Todas estas áreas albergan una biodiversidad inagotable, una de las más abundantes que representa el 5% del planeta . Más de 900 especies de aves entre colibríes, lapas rojas y tucanes conviven con 208 especies de mamíferos como perezosos, monos o felinos como jaguares. Los insectos, reptiles, anfibios y mariposas también se encuentran por todo el territorio!

La naturaleza y la vida están por todas partes, desde las 1200 especies de orquídeas que adornan nuestros árboles hasta la vida que brota en las playas cada año cuando millones de tortugas verdes, tortugas laúd y carey llegan a la costa caribeña en el Parque Nacional Tortuguero para desovar, viajando desde cientas de millas de distancia. De manera similar, en Ostional, en el Pacífico, miles de tortugas Lora (Kemp’s Ridley) llegan a la playa cada año.

Hace unos días hemos regresado de nuestras vacaciones por Costa Rica. Realmente una experiencia inolvidable y todo gracias a CRS Tours. Pastos marinos de Costa Rica

Los pastos marinos son plantas angiospermas, que tienen flor, que evolucionaron para poder adaptarse a vivir en condiciones de inundación permanente en agua salada. La mayoría de estas plantas se pueden encontrar en sitios donde el sedimento es suave, constituido por el limo o la arena, en ambientes con poca profundidad, pueden estar asociadas a lagunas cercanas a arrecifes coralinos o a manglares (Cortés &Wehrtmann 2009; Martínez-Daranas, Cano, & Clero, 2009).

Estos ecosistemas, así como los manglares, arrecifes de coral y bosques costeros prestan servicios ambientales como lo es la fijación de carbono, fijan entre 500-4000 g C/m 2 /año superando a otras asociaciones vegetales, además, esta productividad suele ser mayor en los trópicos que en las zonas subtropicales (Cortés & Wehrtmann 2009). Otros servicios ambientales es que proporcionan hábitat a diferentes grupos taxonómicos como la epifauna, fitoplancton y zooplancton, necton, infauna, camarones, peces, moluscos, erizos, anémonas, algas, entre otros. Asimismo, son fuente alimenticia para muchos organismos y albergan especies de importancia comercial como peces, moluscos y crustáceos que sustentan las economías pesqueras locales (Herrera & Teutli, 2017; Lara-Domínguez, 2005). 

En el Pacífico Sur de Costa Rica se puede encontrar este ecosistema, en la parte interna del Golfo Dulce, en el lado suroeste en Playa Colibrí. En este sitio se puede encontrar dos especies de pastos marinos: Halodule beaudettei y Halophila baillonis conocido como pasto trébol. Este ecosistema tiene una extensión de 27.000 m 2 aproximadamente y se puede encontrar entre la Quebrada Grande y la Cerritos (Barquero, 2018).

Seagrass of Costa Rica

Sea grasses are angiosperm plants, which have flower, that evolved to be able to adapt to living in conditions of permanent flood in salt water. Most of these plants can be found in places where the sediment is soft, consisting of silt or sand, in shallow environments, they can be associated with lagoons near coral reefs or mangroves (Cortés & Wehrtmann 2009; Martínez-Daranas, Cano, & Clergy, 2009).

These ecosystems, as well as mangroves, coral reefs and coastal forests provide environmental services such as carbon fixation, they set between 500-4000 g C / m2 / year, surpassing other plant associations, in addition, this productivity is usually higher in the tropics than in the subtropics (Cortés & Wehrtmann 2009). Other environmental services is that they provide habitat to different taxonomic groups such as epifauna, phytoplankton and zooplankton, nekton, infauna, shrimp, fish, mollusks, urchins, anemones, algae, among others. Likewise, they are a food source for many organisms and host commercially important species such as fish, mollusks and crustaceans that support local fishing economies (Herrera & Teutli, 2017; Lara-Domínguez, 2005).

In the South Pacific of Costa Rica this ecosystem can be found, in the inner part of the Golfo Dulce, on the southwest side in Playa Colibrí. At this site you can find two species of seagrass: Halodule beaudettei and Halophila baillonis known as clover grass. This ecosystem has an area of ​​approximately 27,000 m2 and can be found between Quebrada Grande and Cerritos (Barquero, 2018).

Arrecifes de coral en Costa Rica

Los arrecifes de coral se pueden encontrar distribuidos alrededor del mundo entre las latitudes de 30º Norte y 30º Sur, el Pacífico Oriental debido a la importancia biogeoquímica, geología, distribución y diversidad el desarrollo de estos ecosistemas se ve favorecido por las bajas temperaturas, salinidades y la alta descargas de nutrientes que provienen del continente (Alvarado, Cortés, Fernández & Nivia, 2005; Astorga, 2019).

Los arrecifes tienen gran importancia por la presencia de varios grupos taxonómicos que se encuentran en este sitio debido a sirven como refugio, sitios de crianza para especies de importancia comercial o algunas especies que se alimentan de otras especies que ahí se desarrollan. Por una parte, estos ecosistemas se desarrollan mejor a lo largo de las costas que están protegidas por montañas elevadas que reducen el efecto del viento que a su vez causa el afloramiento de aguas frías siendo Panamá y Costa Rica los sitios con la mayor diversidad y desarrollo de corales del Pacífico de América (Glynn et al. 1983; Cortés, 1997, Guzmán & Cortés, 1993).

Por otra parte, en Costa Rica se pueden encontrar arrecifes de coral en ambas costas, la Pacífica y la Caribe, en el Caribe se pueden encontrar los arrecifes mas desarrollados en el Caribe Sur (Manzanillo, Cahuita, Punta Uva, Punta Mona, entre otros) y en el Pacífico se pueden encontrar a lo largo de toda la costa con excepción del Golfo de Nicoya, Sierpe, Rincón y Damas que tienen el manglar bien desarrollado. En el Pacífico Sur se puede encontrar en la Isla del Caño el arrecife más desarrollado con gran número de especies de coralinas, además en la Isla del Coco (que se encuentra a 500 km aproximadamente de la costa) también se puede encontrar este ecosistema (Cortés & Murillo, 1985).

Este ecosistema brinda protección y estabilidad a la costa mediante la disipación del oleaje reduciendo la erosión diaria en las playas, la cresta arrecifal disipa en promedio 86% de la energía del oleaje, mientras que en la planicie arrecifal se amortigua 65% de la energía restante. Cuando se dan eventos naturales que presentan una gran cantidad de energía por medio del oleaje como lo son las tormentas y huracanes el arrecife tiene la función de disipar esa energía para disminuir los efectos en las comunidades costeras (Ferrario, Beck, Storlazzi, Micheli, Shepard, Airoldi, 2014).

Coral reefs in Costa Rica

Coral reefs can be found distributed around the world between latitudes of 30º North and 30º South, the Eastern Pacific due to the biogeochemical importance, geology, distribution and diversity, the development of these ecosystems is favored by low temperatures, low salinities and the high discharge of nutrients that come from the continent (Alvarado, Cortés, Fernández & Nivia, 2005; Astorga, 2019).

The coral reefs are of great importance due to the presence of various taxonomic groups that are found in this site because they serve as refuge, breeding sites for species of commercial importance or some species that feed on other species that develop there. On one side, these ecosystems develop better along the coasts that are protected by high mountains that reduce the effect of the wind that in turn causes the upwelling of cold waters, with Panama and Costa Rica being the sites with the greatest diversity and development. of corals from the Pacific of America (Glynn et al. 1983; Cortés, 1997, Guzmán & Cortés, 1993).

On the other hand, in Costa Rica you can find coral reefs on both coasts, the Pacific and the Caribbean, in the Caribbean you can find the most developed coral reefs in the South Caribbean (Manzanillo, Cahuita, Punta Uva, Punta Mona, among others places) and the Pacific they can be found along the entire coast, with the exception of the Gulf of Nicoya, Sierpe, Rincón and Damas, which have well-developed mangroves. In the South Pacific, the most developed reef with a large number of coral species can be found on Caño Island, besides to Cocos Island (which is approximately 500 km from the coast) this ecosystem can also be found (Cortés & Murillo, 1985).

This ecosystem provides protection and stability to the coast by dissipating the waves reducing daily erosion on the beaches, the reef crest dissipates an average of 86% of the wave energy, while the reef plain absorbs 65% of the remaining energy. When there are natural events that present a large amount of energy through waves such as storms and hurricanes, the reef has the function of dissipating that energy to reduce the effects on coastal communities (Ferrario, Beck, Storlazzi, Micheli, Shepard, Airoldi, 2014).

Manglares / Mangroves

Son ecosistemas que se encuentran en latitudes tropicales y subtropicales alrededor del mundo, en América Latina se pueden encontrar bien desarrollados en el ecuador a lo largo de sus costas, además en países como Colombia, Panamá y en la zona sur de Costa Rica se encuentran en la costa Pacífica. En el caso de Costa Rica, se pueden encontrar tanto en la costa Caribe como en la costa Pacífica, siendo en esta última, donde se encuentran los bosques más desarrollados, con mayores alturas y más individuos de diferentes edades (Alongi, 2002). 

En el Pacífico se pueden encontrar siete especies diferentes de manglares como Rhizophora mangle (mangle rojo), R. racemosa , Conocarpus erectus (mangle botoncillo), Laguncularia racemosa (mangle blanco), Avicennia germinans (mangle prieto o mangle negro), A. bicolor y Pelliciera rhizhophorae (mangle piñuela) mientras que en el Caribe se puede encontrar R. mangle (mangle rojo), R. racemosa , C. erectus (mangle botoncillo), L. racemosa (mangle blanco) y A. germinans (mangle prieto o mangle negro), (Spalding, Blasco, & Field, 1997).

Este ecosistema es de gran importancia debido a los diversos servicios ambientales que prestan como lo son pesca, el turismo, son sitios de crianza y de refugio para animales acuáticos, proveen alimento a las etapas tempranas de vida de peces, crustáceos y moluscos, se da la extracción de taninos y carbón (Díaz et al., 2010). Además, del reciclaje de nutrientes, la captura de sedimentos por medio de las raíces, la filtración de las toxinas que se encuentran en al agua, es hábitat para gran diversidad de especies comerciales y no comerciales y da protección de la costa cuando se da el embate de las olas, de huracanes y/o las altas marejadas (BIOMARCC-SINAC-GIZ, 2012).  

Aparte de lo anterior, este ecosistema representa una fuente económica importante para las comunidades que se encuentran cerca, esto es debido a que dependen de la pesca artesanal, la extracción de madera y otros productos no maderables para su subsistencia (Bossi & Cintrón 1990).

This ecosystem is of great importance due to the various environmental services they provide such as fishing, tourism, they are breeding sites and refuge for aquatic animals, they provide food for the early life stages of fish, crustaceans and mollusks, it occurs the extraction of tannins and coal (Díaz, Castro & Manjarrez, 2010). Also, the recycling of nutrients, the capture of sediments by means of the roots, the filtration of toxins found in the water, is habitat for a great diversity of commercial and non-commercial species and provides protection of the coast when the onslaught of waves, hurricanes and/or high tides (BIOMARCC-SINAC-GIZ, 2012).

Apart from the above, this ecosystem represents an important economic source for the communities that are nearby, this is due to the fact that they depend on artisanal fishing, the extraction of wood and other non-timber products for their subsistence (Bossi & Cintrón 1990).
