Guide to PASMO Cards

How to get a PASMO Card and more

Serena Kim

What is a PASMO card?

PASMO is a rechargeable card that is primarily used for public transportation in Japan. It contains an integrated circuit (IC) chip inside the card that allows contactless payment . You can take trains, buses, and taxis with the pre-charged card. PASMO not only works as a transportation card, but also as a payment method in various places throughout Japan.

Where can I use my PASMO card?

You can use PASMO almost everywhere in Japan. Not only getting on a train, but you can also use it at convenience stores, restaurants/shops, vending machines, pretty much anywhere that accepts IC cards.

You can choose your payment method at the register. Select the button that says “IC”.

This is at the Seven Eleven Convenience Store. You will select the payment method. Tap “Transportation IC Card”.

Useful Phrase to know:

When you want to pay with your PASMO, say this!

“Pasumo de onegai shimasu” (パスモでお願いします).

What are the benefits of having a PASMO card?

1. simple and convenient.

Simply pay with PASMO at stores, take a train, and get some food. If you are not so familiar with Japanese coins and getting change every time after paying bothers you, PASMO can help. It works just like a debit card and can be charged up to ¥20,000 yen. Use it easily just by tapping it on the reader.

2. Travel Light

You don’t need to bring a wallet with you that is full of cash and coins. Just bring a PASMO or even just your phone when going out (if you are an iPhone user, you are eligible to use mobile PASMO on your phone!). You can simply pay for things in just a few seconds with your PASMO.

3. Time Saver

You don’t need to purchase tickets every time you get on a train, just tap your card and go! It saves you a lot of time.

Mobile PASMO for iPhone users and PASMO Passport

Due to the shortage of semiconductors, PASMO and Suica are now temporarily unavailable for purchase. But there are still two other ways to obtain PASMO for visitors to Japan.

1. Get a Mobile PASMO card with the PASMO App and connect to Apple Pay (iPhone Users Only)

A step-by-step guide to issuing the PASMO on App

1. Go to the App Store and Install “PASMO” app.

2. Open “PASMO App” on your phone and select “Begin”.

3. On the next page, tap “Make a new PASMO”.

4. You will make a PASMO with “no name”. This way it is easier to issue a card.

5. Select “Not Charging ”

6. The page will guide you to register your PASMO in Apple Pay. All you need to do is to tap the button on the top right, “to next”.

7. Tap the blue box, “Complete”.

8. Your PASMO is now ready! Read the Instructions on top-up in the below section.

Apple Watch Settings:

1. On your iPhone open the Watch App, select the tab that shows your watch, then tap "Wallet&Apple Pay."

2. You will see your mobile PASMO card, then tap "Add."

*Using Mobile PASMO is restricted to a single device, either your phone or watch. If you decide to add your card to your Apple Watch, it will automatically get removed from your iPhone. However, you can transfer the card back to your phone if you wish to do so.

**Mobile PASMO is only available for iPhone 8 and later running iOS14.0 or Apple Watch Series 3 and later (Face ID, Touch ID, or models that use a passcode) running watch OS7.0

2. Get a PASMO PASSPORT for short-term visitors (valid up to 28 days)

PASMO PASSPORT is a PASMO card made for travelers or short-term visitors to Japan that is valid for up to 28 days. The difference between the regular PASMO and the PASMO PASSPORT is that PASMO PASSPORT has some privileges offering some special discounts at designated stores/restaurants with a unique card design. When issuing the PASMO PASSPORT, you must have a foreign passport that ensures you are an overseas traveler.

Things to be aware:

  • PASMO PASSPORT is valid only up to 28 days.
  • You must carry the Reference Paper that was issued to you with your PASMO PASSPORT.
  • If you lose your PASMO PASSPORT, you can’t get it replaced.

For more information, check this page Things to Keep in Mind

Purchase your PASMO Passport upon your arrival at the airport

Depending on which airport you use, go find these locations on each terminal

In the case of Tokyo:

  • Narita Airport Terminal 1・2・3 at "SKYLINER & KEISEI INFORMATION CENTER"
  • Haneda Airport Terminal 3 at the entrance on the second floor OR at Keikyu Tourist Information Center (Haneda Airport Terminal 3)
  • Haneda Airport Terminal 1・2 at Information center

Getting your PASMO PASSPORT upon your arrival at the airport might be the best. But, there are some other locations available as well, so please refer to the How to Purchase for more information.

How to top up a mobile PASMO and PASMO Passport?

You can charge your PASMO cards at:

  • Machines at a train station
  • Special machine before you come out of the station
  • Stores with IC reader

1. Select “International” to change the language.

2. Select your preferred language.

3. Tap “Recharge IC card” to top up your PASMO.

4. Insert your PASMO card or Put your device onto the machine. Then, insert cash. (only cash accepted)

If you are low on balance and cannot get out of the station, go find one of these special machines. You can charge your PASMO here. The instructions are the same as above.

If you are getting on the bus and are low on balance, you can ask the driver to top up your card. (Top-up is available from a minimum of ¥1,000 yen)

All you have to say is “Chāji o onegai shimasu” (チャージをお願いします)”.

Photo: myboys.me / Shutterstock.com

Plus, you can top up your PASMO at any convenience store or store with IC readers.

Use the same phrase to charge your card.

“Chāji o onegai shimasu” (チャージをお願いします)”.

Returning your PASMO when leaving Japan

You can take the PASMO Passport home as a souvenir. Stored fare balances in the PASMO Passport are not refundable, so you don’t need to return it to the station anyway. For Mobile Pasmo, the remaining balance can only be refunded through Japanese banks. So, for foreign travelers, it is recommended to use up the remaining balance or save it for future trips.

How To Get an IC Card (Suica, PASMO, etc) in 2024

Here’s a full rundown of how to get an IC card like Suica or Pasmo to pay for almost everything in Japan in 2024.

Example of a Japanese Welcome Suica IC card

We always recommend that travellers buy an IC card like PASMO or Suica in Japan, as having one makes getting around in Japan a breeze. In addition to paying for local transport like subways and buses, you can pay for nearly everything with an IC card.

During 2023, there was a semiconductor shortage and Suica and Pasmo card sales were suspended.

In 2024, IC cards specifically intended for tourists were issued. These are the Welcome Suica and Pasmo Passport cards.

  • If you have an iPhone 8 and above, you can buy Welcome Suica or Pasmo Passport directly on your iPhone and add it to your Apple Wallet .
  • You can buy a Welcome Suica card online and have it sent to your home before you leave for Japan.
  • You can get a Welcome Suica on Pasmo Passport on arrival at Narita Airport or Haneda Airport - be prepared for queues. Full details below.

Example of a Japanese PASMO Passport IC card

What Are These Tourist-Only Travel Cards?

The special tourist-only IC cards are called PASMO Passport and the Welcome Suica , which are issued by different companies. Functionally, they are identical and fully interchangeable, but we’ve outlined the key differences below:

PASMO Passport

  • Valid for 28 days, after which it expires. No refunds available, so make sure you use all the cash balance before you depart.
  • You must show your passport to the sales staff to prove that you’re a non-resident visiting Japan.
  • It currently costs ¥1,500. This is the amount you’ll have loaded onto your card, as they’ve waived the ¥500 issuing fee. No word on how long that will last.
  • You can buy one on arrival at Haneda and Narita Airports. You can also buy them at a few train or subways stations in Tokyo itself (but check the following link below carefully for the present sales locations as these change all the time). This link takes you to a list of sales counters .

Advertisements in Japanese and English, displayed at train station counters, suggesting visitors purchase a PASMO Passport IC card

Welcome Suica

  • You can purchase one from the vending machine at Haneda Airport or the JR East Travel Service Centers at Narita Airport.
  • If you’re purchasing one on behalf of a child aged 6 to 11 years old, you’ll need to show their passport (at the JR ticket office at the airport).
  • You can load it with cash in thousand-yen increments to start with.
  • You can only buy it at Narita or Haneda Airport.

Which One Should I Get?

Functionally, it doesn’t matter which one you buy. For example, you might decide you want the cute Hello Kitty-themed PASMO card as a souvenir instead of the sakura-themed Welcome Suica card and base your decision on that. If you’re in a hurry to get out of the airport, you may also decide to just buy the PASMO Passport in the city.

For this reason, we’d recommend purchasing the Welcome Suica on arrival at Narita or Haneda Airport. It’s likely that you’ll have to wait in line, but it’s well worth the time spent here for hassle-free train travel afterwards. Plus, you don’t have to show your ID!

A long queue of people waiting to use the Welcome Suica IC card vending machines at Haneda Airport

Here’s how you get a Welcome Suica card

Where to buy it.

As of 10 August 2023, you can only purchase the Welcome Suica card at the following locations:

  • JR-EAST Travel Service Center at Narita Airport Terminal Stations 1 and 2/3
  • The Welcome Suica vending machine on the Arrivals floor at Haneda Airport Terminal 3 Station, Tokyo Monorail Haneda Airport Line

Don’t forget to buy it on arriving at the airport in Tokyo!

If your flight lands at Narita Airport, head to the nearest JR-EAST Travel Service Center in Narita. There are two such centers in Narita: one in Airport Terminal 1 Station and one in Terminal 2/3 Station.

For the purposes of this article, we’ll show you how to do this at the vending machine on the Arrivals floor at Terminal 3 of Haneda Airport. This is where all international flights land at Haneda and it’s the most straightforward way to get one — just keep in mind that you’ll need to queue and the line can be long during busy seasons.

People using the Welcome Suica IC card vending machines at Haneda Airport

First, find the vending machine at Haneda Airport

After customs, you’ll be on the Arrivals floor. Follow the signs to the Tokyo Monorail. The vending machine is to the left of the ticket barriers. You can’t miss it. Have cash ready and get in line. Note: We’ve been hearing rumors that sales at the vending machine will be discontinued. If this is the case, PASMO Passport cards will be available from the Keikyu Line service counter, which is roughly opposite the Tokyo Monorail entrance.

1. Choose your language (we selected English).

2. Hit “Accept” for the Adult Card.

– If you are purchasing a Child Card, the attendant nearby will likely ask to see a passport.

3. Insert the amount of money you’d like to put on the card.

4. Voila! A card. Make sure you keep the slip of paper that comes with it. This reference paper contains information about the validity period of your Welcome Suica, but you’ll also need to show it if the staff ask to see it.

Other Options

The Kansai version of Suica/PASMO is called ICOCA and it’s available at large JR Stations in Kansai, as well as at Kansai International Airport. So, if you’re starting your trip in Kansai, pick one up and you can use it everywhere in Japan, just like Suica/PASMO.

Also, if you have a relatively new iPhone model and have Apple Pay, you can get a Suica or PASMO card on your phone . Just note that you can only top it up with a MasterCard or American Express card, or using cash at train and subway stations in Japan.

Finally, you can buy a Welcome Suica card online and have it sent to your home before you leave for Japan.

Pasmo Cards in Tokyo: The Lowdown

Pasmo cards are a type of prepaid train card in Japan. Just like Suica IC cards , they save you time, money, and the hassle of desparately searching for your ticket.

But how do you get one? What about charging them, or worse, what if you lose it? We answer all those questions and more in this comprehensive guide to Pasmo cards in Tokyo.

The latest news on Pasmo cards

  • Pasmo Passports can only be bought at ticket offices at Haneda Airport, not at ticket machines
  • The [price amount=500] issuing fee is currently being waived

What is a Pasmo card?

tourist pasmo card

Pasmo Passport: For short-term visitors to Japan

How do i buy a pasmo passport ic card, where can i get a pasmo passport card, how to use a pasmo card.

Pasmo cards are quite straightforward to use. Like train cards in many other parts of the world, you tap the card against an IC card reader at the train station ticket gate as you enter. And then, when you’ve reached your destination, tap the card again on your way out of the station.

For flat-fare buses (the most common type in Tokyo), you just need to tap your card once when you leave the bus.

Where can you use Pasmo cards?

You can use your shiny new Pasmo card anywhere in Tokyo, and anywhere where Suica cards are accepted. Pasmo train cards can also be used in popular destinations outside the Tokyo metro area, such as Osaka , Kyoto , and Fukuoka .

Can I use a Pasmo card on the Shinkansen?

Unfortunately, Pasmo cards aren’t easy to use on the Shinkansen . So if you’re a visitor to Japan, it may be easier to buy a JR Pass or individual Shinkansen tickets instead.

How to top up a Pasmo card

When your balance is getting low, it’s time to charge your Pasmo card. The easiest way to do this is at a ticket machine. You can find them both inside and outside of ticket gates, and you can easily change the machine’s language to English. From there just follow the prompts and you’re done.

Pasmo Recharge Instructions

Pasmo cards can also be charged at some shops and on some buses. You can also register for auto-charging with Pasmo; if you do, it will auto-charge as you pass through a gate when it runs out of cash. That’s not recommended for short-term visitors, though.

Can I charge a Pasmo card with a credit card?

No, unfortunately you can’t top up a Pasmo with a credit card.

Can I charge a Pasmo at a convenience store?

Yes, you can charged a Pasmo card at a convenience store. Either use the ATM in the store or top up at the cash register.

Where can I buy a Pasmo card?

You can buy a Pasmo card at almost every private railway station, subway station, or bus depot in Tokyo. You can also buy them at Narita Airport or Haneda Airport . Most short-term visitors to Japan can get by with a blank Pasmo card, but if you’re staying for longer consider regitsering your Pasmo card.

Pasmo Purchase Instructions

When you buy a new blank Pasmo IC card in Japan, ¥ 500 will be taken off your first loaded balance as a deposit. For example, if you load ¥ 2,000 , you’ll only have ¥ 1,500 available for fares until you reload.

How to register a Pasmo card

If you are planning to stay in Tokyo long term, we recommend registering (or personalizing) your Pasmo card. This basically means that your card is registered to you personally — your name is even printed on the front of the card. This means if it gets lost there’s a higher chance of it finding its way back to you. Or the balance of the lost card can be transfered to a new one.

To register your Pasmo you need to find a ticket machine at a private railway station. Then insert your card and follow the onscreen prompts. Just keep in mind that not all ticket machines can do this, so make sure you find the right one.

How do I return my card?

tourist pasmo card

If, for whatever reason, you don’t want to take your Pasmo card home as a signifier of your globetrotter status, you can return your Pasmo card at a service desk. There’s no charge, and you’ll get your ¥ 500 deposit back. There are also special Pasmo return machines at Narita and Haneda airports.

Pasmo cards for children

If you have children, you can get a special children’s Pasmo. The fares for a children’s Pasmo are half of an adults, so it’s definitely worth doing, especially if you’re in Japan long term. To get a children’s Pasmo, you need to take proof of the child’s age to a Keisei Information Center. You can find these at major Keisei stations, and Narita Airport.

Pro tip: In Japan, children under 6 can generally travel on the trains for free, as long as there are only two of them — the third child under 6 will be charged a child’s fare. When passing through ticket gates, simply scan your own pass and walk through together. While the odds of being asked are low, it is worth carrying a proof of age document — like a passport — to avoid any awkward conversations with the train and metro staff.

Can I get a virtual Pasmo card?

Apple users can set up their iPhones for virtual Pasmo cards. The process is fairly easy to follow and here’s also a dedicated guide on their website if you get stuck.

You can also add a Pasmo card to your Google Wallet, but only if your phone is compatible with osaifu keitai . Basically, osaifu keitai is a mobile payment system that’s only available on phones issued in Japan.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreigners use pasmo ic cards.

Yes, foreigners can buy and use Pasmo cards.

Can you use Pasmo train cards outside of Tokyo?

Yes, you can use your Pasmo outside of Tokyo, like Osaka. But you still need to tap in and out within the same area. For example, if you’re traveling from Tokyo to Osaka on local lines with your Pasmo card, you’ll have to awkwardly tap out and in again at some stations.

Can I use my Pasmo cards on JR lines?

Yes, you can your Pasmo card on JR Lines all over Japan.

Is Pasmo better than Suica?

To be honest, both cards are pretty similar. If you live in Tokyo and have a commuter pass, then you’ll be forced to have one or the other depending on your travel route but otherwise there aren’t any major differences.

But if you want to see the nitty-gritty details on how Pasmo stacks up against Suica, see our handy comparison guide . You can also find more information on the official Pasmo site .

This post was written in November, 2018 and last updated in October 2024. Information was correct at the time; however, it is subject to change without notice. The article was a joint effort with Lily Crossley-Baxter .

A guide to using the foreigner-only PASMO PASSPORT in Japan

If you don’t want the hassle of trying to get a refund for your PASMO card at the end of your time in Japan, then the PASMO PASSPORT is the answer! This transportation IC card is specifically for foreign travelers but with the same function and use as the standard PASMO card. It can be used for electronic payments at supermarkets, vending machines, and cooperative stores, as well as offering a few features that set it apart.

Cute designs

One of the highlights of the PASMO PASSPORT is its cute design, with popular Sanrio characters depicted on the face. It’s a great souvenir to take home at the end of your Japanese vacation so you can remember all your travel adventures.

PASMO PASSPORT

PASMO PASSPORT

No deposit required

Unlike most other transport cards in Japan, you don’t pay a deposit when buying a PASMO PASSPORT. The 2,000 yen purchase price includes a 500 yen issuance fee and 1,500 yen of transport credit, meaning you don’t have to deal with the complicated procedure of returning the card to receive a deposit refund before heading home. But keep in mind that once your PASMO PASSPORT expires, the pre-stored money cannot be refunded. So it’s recommended that you only store a small amount on the card so it’s not wasted.

PASMO: How to Buy and Use for Transportation and Shopping

article thumbnail image

PASMO is an IC card (electronic payment method) that can be used to pay for transportation and shopping all around Japan. This article explains how to buy a PASMO card, how to charge it, and how to use it.

Banner Image

PASMO: An IC Card Usable for Transportation and Shopping

PASMO is an IC card (electronic transportation ticket) introduced by the PASMO Committee, which is made up of transportation operators in the Tokyo metropolitan area such as Tokyo Metro.

With a PASMO, you don't need to buy paper tickets for each train ride in urban areas. If your PASMO is charged, you'll pay for your train/bus ride by touching the IC card reader at the ticket gates .

PASMO has the exact same functions as the Suica IC card . The only difference between them is that Suica is issued by East Japan Railways (JR-East).

Since 2013, PASMO has been accepted nationwide in Japan, allowing interoperability with other electronic transportation tickets. If you plan to primarily use city trains and subways during your travel without purchasing a travel pass, buying a transportation card like PASMO is the most convenient option.

Where to Buy a PASMO Card

You can purchase PASMO at automatic ticket machines or service counters of various affiliated transportation operators (such as Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, Keisei Electric Railway, and 28 other operators).

Mobile PASMO

【東京交通】 PASMO怎麼買?

You just need to download the PASMO app on your smartphone and follow the setup instructions to use your phone as a PASMO card. It’s very convenient for both taking transportation and shopping!

Exclusive PASMO PASSPORT for Foreign Visitors

PASMO kitty sanrio

The purchasing method for the PASMO transportation card is similar to that of the Suica card, with the only difference being that the purchase locations are at subway automatic ticket machines rather than JR stations.

The PASMO PASSPORT is exclusive to foreigners and costs 2,000 yen, which includes a 500 yen buyout fee; thus, the actual usable amount is 1,500 yen.

If you need more, you can add value. Additionally, by presenting this card at participating stores, you can enjoy various discounts.

How to Reload Transportation IC Cards

There are two main methods to reload transportation IC cards: the first is at stations, and the second is at convenience stores.

1. At Convenience Stores

711

Most automatic ticket machines at railway companies that accept transportation IC cards have a reloading function, but the easiest and most widely accessible reloading machines are the ATMs at Japan's 7-11 convenience stores.

儲值畫面

Picture courtesy of JR東日本 The first step is to press "電子マネーチャージ" (Electronic Money Charge) on the screen at the top, then place your card in the reading area on the right. Next, a selection of amounts will appear; choose the amount you want, and the cover at the bottom will open.

After inserting the bills, just wait a moment, and the reloading will be completed—plus, there are no processing fees, making it very convenient.

You can also ask staff at convenience stores in Japan for help with reloading. When reloading, say "Charge" in English, followed by the amount, and pay in cash.

*Convenience stores that offer reloading: 7-11, FamilyMart, Lawson, Poplar, MINI STOP, Daily Yamazaki.

2. Reloading at Major Stations

初始畫面

On the initial screen, click on the "チャージ(入金)する" (Charge/Deposit) option on the right side. Then, various amounts will appear; after selecting an amount, proceed to insert bills or coins just like in the purchasing step. (Note that the steps may vary slightly depending on the railway company's machine.)

Scope of PASMO Usage

For the current areas where PASMO can be used, please check the official website .

Stores Where PASMO Can Be Used

東京美食_松屋

Just like the Suica or ICOCA cards, PASMO has a comprehensive electronic wallet function, and in addition to transportation and convenience stores, it can be used at many other retailers.

For example, well-known drugstores like Matsumoto Kiyoshi, Daikoku, and Tsuruha; fast-food chains like McDonald's, Matsuya, Coco Ichibanya, and MOS Burger are included, making it quite diverse.

For a detailed list of stores where PASMO can be used, please refer to the official PASMO website (in Japanese).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Can PASMO be used on buses? A: The PASMO card can be used on most city bus routes that accept transportation IC cards.

Q2. Can PASMO be used on limited express trains? A: PASMO and other IC cards can be used to pay for the fare, but if you are taking a train that requires an additional limited express fee, make sure to also purchase a limited express ticket with a seat reservation or buy one on board.

Q3. Can PASMO be used in Kyoto and Osaka? A: Generally, PASMO can also be used in the urban areas of Osaka and Kyoto. However, if you accidentally arrive at a destination outside the city where it cannot be used, please ask the station staff to clear your record and pay the fare in cash.

Q4. What should I do if my balance is insufficient when exiting? A: There are recalculation machines near the automatic ticket gates, so please reload there.

Q5. Can I return my card? A: If you have a standard PASMO card, you can go to the affiliated operator's counter to return it. A handling fee will be deducted, and you will receive your deposit of 500 yen along with any remaining balance.

Q6. Can the PASMO be used outside the Kansai and Kanto regions? A: Yes! Anywhere that has the IC card interoperability symbol can accept it.

Calculation Method for Card Return Fees

Refund Amount = Card Balance - Handling Fee (220 yen) + Deposit (500 yen) *If the balance is zero, only the 500 yen deposit will be refunded.

How to Return the Card

Go to the station counter and inform the staff that you want to process a refund. You can hold the card and show this Japanese phrase to the staff: Harai modoshitai desu.

Summary of Various Tickets

Use the pasmo instead of buying train tickets.

Do i need a Pasmo Card for my trip?

With your JR Pass , you’ll be able to ride JR lines within Tokyo, such as the Yamanote Line and the Chuo line , to access many places. However, if, for example, your hotel is located on a subway line, you may be taking the subway a lot, and for that a Pasmo is really convenient. Pasmo cards are a really great way to save time so that you don’t get lost wandering through train stations looking to buy a ticket.

For example, if you use your JR Pass to take the bullet train from Tokyo to Osaka , once you arrive in Osaka, you can simply transfer right to the subway and continue on with the rest of your trip! Or if you’re making a stop to see the Peace Memorial in Hiroshima , hop right on the city street cars with a tap of the card. New, the Pasmo passport has a nice design but is not refundable after 28 days. Click here to learn more about this card .

What is a Pasmo Card? All Your Questions Answered!

If you will be using public transportation multiple times on your trip to Japan, it is best to get a prepaid IC card, such as the PASMO card. It saves you the hassle of having to wait in line at ticket machines or ticket offices, and calculating how much the fares are. With it, you can get on and off trains and buses easily and conveniently.

What is the PASMO card?

The PASMO card is a kind of smart prepaid card that you can use not only for trains, subways, and buses, but also for buying goods and paying for transactions across Japan. It can be recharged or loaded with credits to cover your public transportation expenses, and purchases from many convenience stores, restaurants, and vending machines. It is one of the two IC cards that can be purchased in the Tokyo region (the other one being the Suica card ), and is valid on various JR and non-JR train, metro, subway, and bus lines nationwide.

How do you buy a PASMO card?

You can buy your own PASMO card as soon as you land at Haneda Airport or Narita International Airport. Just look for a ticket vending machine that offers the option to buy a PASMO card. You can also purchase one at various JR and non-JR train stations in the Tokyo area.

To purchase a PASMO card using a ticket machine, follow the steps below:

  • Many ticket vending machines have different language options available for non-Japanese speakers. Select “English” on the screen to proceed.
  • Touch the button with the label “PASMO”.
  • On the next screen, you are given two choices: a “Personal user PASMO”, if you want to have your name printed on your PASMO card (be prepared to input a number of personal details necessary for the issuance of a replacement card if you lose your original one); or a “General user PASMO”, if you are fine with a regular, nameless PASMO card.
  • Select how much stored value you would like on your PASMO card. The options are 1,000 yen, 2,000 yen, 3,000 yen, 4,000 yen, 5,000 yen, and 10,000 yen. All include a 500 yen deposit.
  • Pay for your purchase by inserting bills or coins. Credit cards are not accepted.
  • The next screen shows a summary of your transaction. You can touch the “Back” button if you made a mistake, or the “Receipt” button to create your card.
  • Your PASMO card and your receipt should be ready in a few seconds.

How much does a PASMO card cost?

There are PASMO cards available for adults and children. They cost 1,000 yen, 2,000 yen, 3,000 yen, 4,000 yen, 5,000 yen, and 10,000 yen, and include a 500 yen deposit. At the end of your trip, you can get a refund of the deposit and the remaining balance in your card by returning it to a non-JR train or subway station within the Tokyo area.

Adult PASMO cards are charged with adult rates, while child PASMO cards get charged with child rates.  If you are travelling with a kid, you can purchase a child PASMO card for him or her by presenting the necessary documentation that proves his or her age.

How do you use the PASMO card to get around?

To get to the train platforms at train, subway, or metro stations, you just touch your PASMO card onto the sensors or readers at the ticket gates. And, once you arrive at your destination station, get off the train and head to the ticket gates where you touch your PASMO card once again onto the sensors or readers. The total fare for the journey is automatically deducted from your card.

To use your PASMO card on buses, touch it onto the sensor or card reader found next to doors or the bus driver once you board or alight. The exact bus fare should also be automatically deducted from your card.

How do you use the PASMO card for shopping?

The PASMO card can work as a wallet that you can use to pay for goods and services while you are travelling in Japan. It is very useful for the following situations:

  • When purchasing foods and drinks from the train trolley services available on some long-distance railway journeys, you can pay using your PASMO instead of cash.
  • If you want to buy soft drinks, water, tea, coffee, juice, and various food items from many vending machines across the country, you can touch it onto the sensor or reader and the total amount of your purchase is automatically deducted.
  • When dining at some restaurants, you can pay for your meals with your PASMO card.
  • A lot of convenience stores across Japan also accept PASMO cards as a mode of payment for purchases.
  • If you need to store your luggage in one of those modern coin lockers at train or bus stations, you can use PASMO to pay for it.

Where can you use the PASMO card?

The PASMO card can be used on several JR train and non-JR/private train lines all over the country; many intercity express bus lines, overnight buses, airport shuttle buses, and city buses; and taxis around Japan. However, it does not work on Shinkansen lines and express train lines.

Some of the railway companies that utilize it are the Tokyo Railway, Toei Subway, Keisei Electric Railway, Keio Corporation, Keikyu, Enoshima Electric Railway, Hakone Tozan Railway, Seibu Railway, Tobu Railway, Izu Hakone Railway – Daiyuzan Line, Tokyu Corporation, Tsukuba Express, Odakyu Electric Railway, Yokohama Subway, and Saitama Railway.

It also valid on several bus lines, including the Fuji Kyuko, Keisei Bus, Hakone Tozan Bus, Odakyu City Bus, Kanto Bus, Tobu Bus, Kanagawa Chuo Kotsu, Seibu Bus, Keio Bus, Keihin Kyuko Bus, and Kawasaki City Bus; and a number of tram lines, such as the Toei Streetcar.

How do you recharge your PASMO card?

There are many railway stations from as far north as Hokkaido and as far south as Kyushu that have recharging machines for PASMO cards. You can top up or reload your PASMO at one found at a JR or non-JR station in denominations of 1,000 yen.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

  • Insert your PASMO card into the card slot.
  • Touch the “English” language option for ease and convenience.
  • Select the “Charge” button on the screen.
  • Choose the amount you would like to load into your card. Options are 1,000 yen, 2,000 yen, 3,000 yen, 4,000 yen, 5,000 yen, and 10,000 yen. Notice that the screen also shows how much money you still have in your card.
  • Insert bills or coins into the money slot to pay for the transaction.
  • Take your newly recharged PASMO card.

You can also recharge your PASMO card on buses by asking the bus driver, or at several shops and stores by asking a staff member.

What is the PASMO card’s validity period?

The PASMO card has a validity period of 10 years. You can keep your own card after your last trip to Japan, and still be able to use it on your future trips, with the deposit and remaining balance intact, within the next 10 years. Visit the official PASMO website for more information.

Traveling Between Narita Airport and Downtown Tokyo? Here’s all you need to know about the Tokyo Shuttle Service

tourist pasmo card

Suica, Pasmo, Icoca and seven more of Japan's most popular IC cards were made compatible with each other in 2013, making it possible to travel on almost all trains , subways and buses in most of Japan's largest cities with just a single of these cards.

What is an IC card?

IC cards are rechargeable cards that can be used to conveniently pay fares on public transportation and to make payments at many vending machines , shops and restaurants by simply touching the card on a reader for about one second. Dozens of train and bus operators across Japan have started issuing their own IC cards since 2001.

Instead of physical IC cards, it is possible to use digital versions of some of the cards on mobile phones ; however, at present, oversea tourists can do this only if they own an Iphone .

What are the ten major IC cards?

The following ten major IC cards are compatible with each other:

What is covered and what is not?

The ten cards are valid on virtually all trains, subways and buses in most of Japan's major cities, including Tokyo , Osaka , Kyoto , Nagoya and Fukuoka . But there are a few issues to keep in mind:

It is not possible to travel outside IC card areas. Both, the origin and destination stations have to be located inside the IC card's coverage area. Furthermore, it is not possible to use an IC card to travel between disjoined IC card areas (except when using shinkansen trains; see details below). For example, you cannot use it to travel between Tokyo and Sendai .

IC cards can be used on selected shinkansen lines, but need some set-up before use. There are currently three different systems:

  • On the Tokaido/Sanyo/Kyushu Shinkansen IC cards can be used on the Tokaido / Sanyo / Kyushu Shinkansen via the Tokaido Sanyo Kyushu Shinkansen Online Reservation Service . In order to do so, one or more IC cards and a credit card have to be registered on the website or app (note that the app is available only in a limited number of countries and known as smart EX). Afterwards, it is possible to purchase shinkansen tickets online and use the registered IC cards to pass through the shinkansen ticket gates. Fares are charged to the registered credit card rather than subtracted from the IC cards' balance.
  • On shinkansen in eastern and northern Japan It is possible to use regular IC cards on all shinkansen trains in eastern and northern Japan by purchasing e-tickets through JR East's reservation website . Fares are charged to the registered credit card rather than subtracted from the IC cards' balance.
  • On shinkansen operated by JR East Regular IC cards can be used on non-reserved seats along the Tohoku, Akita, Yamagata , Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen trains (Hokuriku Shinkansen only between Tokyo and Joetsu-Myoko stations). Before you can use an IC card for this service, which is known as "Touch de Go", a one-time set-up procedure is required at a ticket machine. Fares will be subtracted from the IC card's balance.

When riding other trains that require a supplement fee, e.g. limited express trains, travelers can use the IC card to pay the base fare when passing through the ticket gates, but the supplement ticket needs to be purchased separately at a ticket machine, office or online.

Many highway buses cannot be paid by IC card.

The table below shows in more detail the coverage of the IC cards:

How to use IC cards?

When passing automatic ticket gates, touch the card onto the card reader for about one second (rather than inserting it into the ticket slot). The applicable fare will be automatically deducted when you exit through the ticket gate at your destination station. When riding buses , card readers are placed at the entrance and/or exit of the bus. A card cannot be shared by multiple travelers for the same ride. Each traveler needs a separate card.

tourist pasmo card

Is there a discount over regular tickets?

IC cards generally do not provide any discounts over regular tickets. But in Greater Tokyo , Niigata and Sendai , train fares can differ by a few yen depending on whether an IC card or a paper ticket is used. This is because fares are rounded to the nearest ten yen in case of paper tickets, but not rounded in case of IC cards. Around central Tokyo, payment by IC card is always cheaper than payment by paper ticket (by up to nine yen), but outside of central Tokyo, either ticket type can be up to five yen cheaper than the other.

Where to get an IC card?

IC cards can be purchased at ticket machines and ticket counters of the issuing railway companies. The initial cost consists of a refundable deposit of 500 yen plus an initial amount (typically 1500 yen) to be charged onto the card. For a surcharge, Suica and Pasmo cards can also be purchased and sent to you before the start of your trip through Japan Experience . Last but not least, Iphone users can add Suica, Pasmo and Icoca cards to Apple Pay .

Are there digital versions of the IC cards?

Iphone 8 and later models can be set up to serve as Suica, Pasmo and Icoca cards by adding the cards to Apple Pay, but note that some credit cards issued outside of Japan cannot be used to charge your card.

Android phones can be used as IC cards through the "Mobile Suica", "Mobile Pasmo" and "Mobile Icoca" apps; however, the apps are targeted at residents of Japan and difficult or impossible to use for visitors to Japan. Specifically, they require Osaifu Keitai compatibility, which is not provided by most phones sold outside of Japan, come in Japanese only, and require an address in Japan and possibly a credit card that has been issued in Japan.

Which IC card shall I get?

The IC cards are virtually identical to each other in terms of coverage. The cards differ mainly on where they can be purchased and refunded. Therefore, most people will want to purchase the card available in the first city they visit, e.g. Suica or Pasmo in Tokyo or Icoca in Osaka . If you load a digital card onto your mobile phone , then you have the choice of Suica, Pasmo or Icoca regardless of your geographical location.

tourist pasmo card

How to recharge IC cards?

IC cards can be recharged at ticket machines and special re-charging machines found in strategically meaningful locations. They can also be recharged at stations of companies other than the issuing company, e.g. Suica can also be recharged in Osaka . Furthermore, many convenience stores allow IC cards to be recharged at the cashier. The maximum amount to be charged onto a card is 20,000 yen.

How to check the current balance?

The current credit balance is shown on a small display whenever you pass a ticket gate or make a payment at a store. Furthermore, the balance can be checked at ticket machines together with a usage history.

How to get back the 500 yen refundable deposit?

Bring your card to the ticket counter of the issuing operator in order to get back your 500 yen deposit. Unused credit can also be refunded; however, most companies will subtract a 220 yen handling fee from the remaining balance. Note that IC cards can be returned only to the issuing company, e.g. it is not possible to return a Suica card in Osaka or an Icoca card in Tokyo .

Is there an expiry date?

Cards become invalid if they are not used for ten years.

Besides regular cards, there are personalized cards which can be replaced if lost (handling fee applies), commuter cards which also serve as a commuter pass, and cards for children.
